British energy company BG Group yesterday sought to promote its A$13.7 billion bid for Origin Energy (ORG.AX: Quote, Profile, Research) while releasing its bidder's statement. BG chief executive Frank Chapman dismissed suggestions that the proposed export-focused merger would cause a surge in domestic gas prices, terming the claims "economically not rational.' The bidder's statement ruled out significant staff redundancies, and confirmed plans to retain Origin's Sydney headquarters and sell Origin's majority stake in New Zealand's Contact Energy (CEN.NZ: Quote, Profile, Research). Analysts have welcomed the refined growth strategy of general insurer IAG (IAG.AX: Quote, Profile, Research), unveiled on Wednesday by chief executive Michael Wilkins, but questioned the lack of accountability of the IAG board for the company's problems. more

WS Starbucks among 600 stores to be closed The Business Journal of

Starbucks has released a complete list of the 600 stores it intends to close and it includes just one in the Triad -- 4912 Country Club Road, in the Harper Hill Commons shopping center.

The exact timing of the Winston-Salem closure was not announced, but Starbucks has said that the store closings would begin this month and continue through the first half of fiscal 2009.

On July 1, the Seattle coffee giant (Nasdaq: SBUX) said it would close 600 "underperforming" stores in the U.S. Approximately 70 percent of them opened since the beginning of fiscal 2006, Starbucks said.

California will have most closings, with 88. Florida will have 59 stores closing and Texas will have 57.
