'Crime is choking small businesses'
Crime has a devastating effect on the profitability and viability of many small enterprises, according to the findings of a Small Business Project survey released on Wednesday. The survey found that small business owners were very worried about crime affecting their business and their own safety. "They feel unsafe and are pessimistic about any prospect of relief." According to the survey, two thirds of business owners interviewed did not see any decrease in crime levels over the next year and over a third expected crime levels to rise. The survey covered 446 small and emerging businesses, almost all owned by previously disadvantaged groups in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. . more
Britannia may shut more facilities
The company suspended its Chennai factory operations, which has a capacity of 1,000 tonnes per month, on April 7, 2008 and diverted the production to other locations or outsourced. The company is now offering severance packages to 200 of its employees of this factory.
Britannia has been producing 48,000 tonnes every month, out of which 40,000 tonnes of production is outsourced.
The Bangalore-based company, which reported sales growth of 20.2 per cent for the quarter ended June 30, 2008, said it aims to cut operating costs by at least 2 per cent this year. And this, the company said, will be brought about by suspending work at a few factories, reducing logistic costs, boosting energy efficiency and improving on technologies.
The biscuit major, which commands a 34 per cent market share, is contemplating hiking prices across its brands to deal with rising input cost pressure. more
Zuma in court, businesses fear loss
ANC President Jacob Zuma's court appearance and Cosatu's mass action are likely to bring businesses in Pietermaritzburg to a halt in the first week of August. Chief executive for the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business Andrew Layman said it "may be a very bad week for business, particularly in Pietermaritzburg. "Taxi associations have apparently indicated that they will not be operating on August 4 in solidarity with Zuma. If in fact they do cease operations from that Monday then business will be disrupted. "The fact that taxis don't operate would be more disruptive to business than the strike itself as workers would have no transport to work." . more
