Central Business District expansion recommended

An effort to promote business and to expand the city's downtown moved a step closer to reality Monday. The city Planning Commission recommended the proposed expansion of the Central Business District eastward from Mulberry Street to Penn Street. “The purpose is to try to promote business there, and the ability to develop and extend the downtown look," John Grado, community development director and city engineer, said. City Council will hold a public hearing April 24, on the planning commission's recommendation, he said. City Zoning Officer David Hines said he sent notices to 108 property owners in the proposed expansion area, some of whom own multiple properties. One major change will be no off-street parking requirements for developments in that area, Grado said. As development hopefully occurs, the city Parking Authority may be looking at parking decks to be constructed in the area, he explained. more

Resolved Question: So.. My dad is a drunk... What do I do?

A little background. My dad was an alcoholic around the time I was born. My mother had to leave him, he was thrown in jail and separated from us. He get into AA and became sober for a long time. He then built up a business which ~ 4 years ago was really successful. My dad was sober for >15 years. I have been in college for the last 5 years straight. At some point, while I was there, he started drinking again. He also started doing drugs (I think just smoking pot). I noticed he started drinking again over the very short periods of time I came to visit, but quite frankly i didn't care. I am 23 years old now. I graduated from college in May, and I start graduate school in August. So I am staying with my father for ~ 3 months (2 more to go)... He, now, has become a terrible person. He constantly goes out drinking, till literally 5-6 in the morning. He comes home so drunk he is puking every other (or so) days. He drinks so much, I don't think he can get to the point where he is an angry drunk. His business is failing. Those days he comes home early in the morning drunk... he will sleep for >24 hours. Literally, going to bed at ~ 6am then waking up at 7-8am the next day. He has also become like a childish drunk. He will come home and start crying for me to do things for him, like "get me a glass of milk". Clearly he is messed up, but quite frankly I don't care. My brother has lost all respect for him, and has essentially cut him out of his life because of this. I have lost all respect for him too. He started off acting like he was really messed up and really needed help, so I tried to help him. Sadly, he was just crying "i need help" to just take advantage of my good nature. He would try and act like it was something out of his control. I now (after being back here for ~ 4 weeks) know he is just being weak. For one, I am afraid. He might come home "angry drunk" one day while I am asleep.... I can deal with that. On the other hand (as I have said), I have lost all respect for him, and if this crap continues for the next 2 months that I am here, I will not talk to this man again. Any advice? I have tried to get him to not go to the bars at night. It doesn't work, he doesn't care. I am done catering to his pathetic ass (even if he starts to throw a drunk fit because I won't help him). Also before I realized he was doing this, I was planing on loaning him ~ 20,000$. I figured out pretty quickly, I wouldn't be a loan, it would be a, save my fathers business and house check, but I am about to pull that from him too. Chances are, he is going to lose his house and business. He has no retirement, but I am not going to put up with this. I have tried to help him, and have ran out of ideas short of telling him he is a pathetic loser. He keeps saying (in the day time HA) that he doesn't want to drink like that. Later that night "i am going for a drive", a couple hours later "i am at the bar talking to a friend and will be leaving in about 30 minutes", then he comes home sick drunk >6 hours later. Like I said, I am 23 years old, and if I wasn't actually living here, I wouldn't care. BTW, he is also driving around town very drunk. Literally pulling into the driveway, stepping out of his car, falling over and puking, walking inside and passing out on the floor. He then wakes up >24 hours later, realizing he didn't open his business, and he has to pay his employees for a full day, that none of them worked, because they couldn't get in. I know where he is going to drink. Should I just call the cops when he leaves and let them catch him with a DWI? more

Flair says he's overwhelmed at all this talent. They've had time to think about last week with Hulk Hogan. They want Hogan out so they can give him a present and give back to TNA. Hogan and Abyss come out. Flair asks if he can assume that this will be peaceful. Hogan says he's got nothing to worry about because this is not the time for it. She calls Velvet Sky a bitch and says she's not leaving until she gets out here. Velvet comes out wielding a pink belt. Angelina goes after her and beats her all over the place. Angelina brings her in the ring and delivers a scissor kick. She takes the belt and is going to use it until the rest of the Beautiful People run out. They hold Angelina down so Velvet can whip her with the belt. They beat on her and then pose to their music and leave. * Mr. Anderson is out dressed as Angle with a bald cap, mouth guard, fake tan and a tag that says loser. He says he's the best wrestler as well as the most injury prone wrestler in the world today. He said he broke his neck tying his shoe and from walking his dog. He said he did it while taking a dump and drinking a Yoohoo and however else. He said he had serious business to discuss. Mr. Anderson cut his head but in reality he just wants sympathy. Angle comes out and attacks Anderson. Anderson bails to the outside and thrAnderson bails to the outside and throws a beer in Angle's face. Jarrett got busted open hardway at some point during the match. * Four Corners Match for the TNA Championship, Desmond Wolfe w/Chelsea vs. "The Pope" D'Angelo Diners vs. Abyss vs. AJ Styles w/Ric Flair. Pope's ankle is still injured. Flair uses a chair on it white the referee is distracted during the match. Winner via Figure Four leg lock on The Pope, AJ Styles. After the match, AJ, Flair and Wolfe take turns working over Pope's ankle. Abyss makes the save until Flair uses the barbwire bat on Abyss. They then take turns beating him up. Hogan comes out for the save and uses the bat on Flair and busts him open. Security and agents Dave Taylor and Pat Kenney come out to stop Hogan but he'sbeating up everybody. They finally get control. Hogan gets a mic and says in four days it's on. Pope, Hogan and Abyss are in the ring being held back. Pope breaks free and goes after AJ but gets stopped. It’s a stale September day and my left calf is sticking to the satin sheets of my beige pull out couch bed. My body feels sticky and disgusting and I decide to take a shower in a few minutes, as soon as I can conjure up the energy. My oversized green radio is sitting on my desk and I can hear the soft drift of music. I think a Mariah Carey song is playing, but I’m not sure. I look from the radio, to my chipping pink toenails, to the worn out and cracked soles of my feet. Attractive. When I look away from my feet, I see the wobbling fan that whirls overhead. I imagine how it rouses the hot and heavy air to circle the confines of my room and then exit through the two small windows that accommodate my walls. The windows don’t let in much air, but plenty of sun, and I come to mind how spectacular a mirror can look when hit with just the right light. The colors reflected sort of remind me of a cool spring day somewhere from my past, and I start to name every shade and hue noticeable to my eye. Red, blue, yellow, green, pink, purple…but there are so many colors in between, and although I’m sure they have names, I can’t remember any of them so I just give them new ones. They’re new and exotic and I’m embarrassed to admit that I’m disappointed they would only again come in handy if I decided to take an internship at Crayola design board, if such a thing actually exists. By the time I’m finished with creating my own miniature rainbow, I’ve become almost certain that the temperature has risen and the air has become twice as dense. I play with a loose thread stringing off of my comfy cotton shorts and drift back to 9th grade when I learned about weather and it’s high and low air masses. If I remember correctly, a cold front follows a warm front, and if that’s true, then surely a cold front should be coming through? Doesn’t that bring rain or something, though? I‘m really not sure, I could be completely wrong. I don’t remember much of my past years classes, except for Earth Science being my least favorite 45 minutes of the day for that entire year because all I could think about was how maybe none of anything I learned applied at all to the earths events, but that it could possibly all just be her way of telling us how hot and neglected she’s become. I roll over so my face is against my pillow. These are the things I notice when the house is empty and the street is quiet. When there’s nothing to do but note the little details of your area and analyze them, because your brain is too empty and simple to contemplate anything meaningful. This is one of those times where ideas come slow, so you go into deep thought over the most useless of things and end up contemplating the origin of mint flavored dental floss or something. I hear the front door creak open and heavy footsteps plod across the oak floors. The quiet’s gone and I’m thankful. “Ava, you home?! I got pizza!” I feel myself grin up at the wobbling ceiling fan. The prospect of food and company slightly re-energizes me and I stand up, my toes curling into the plush throw rug. My clothes are damp and uncomfortable from lying down in the heat for that long, so I strip them off and grab my bathrobe from the hook fixed to the door. The warm New York weather had been starting to bring me down, but a cool shower was sure to make me feel a bit better. I step outside my room and onto the landing. “Ok, Dave ! I’m just gonna take a quick shower!” I yell from the top of the stairs. Dave’s my older brother. He lives with my in our generic NYC apartment, keeping me company, paying most of the rent (even though I try to help out, but my minimum wage sales assistant job doesn’t exactly allow it). My Mom isn’t home much since she’s an editor to some big company that I never remember the name to. It caters to business news and stock market information, and other boring aspects of the world. Her boss throws her from one country to another, meeting with one person of high importance after another, telling them what’s “key” in their writing and what isn’t. I can tell it hurts her to be away from Dave and I for such long periods of time, but since our Father passed away from pancreatic Cancer, she really has no choice. I really don’t mind, I like Dave, and she calls often enough anyway. “C’mon Ava! Hurry your ass up, it‘s getting cold!” I quickly make my way down the hall. Even though the hallway is narrow and I have to be careful not to bump my side into the bathroom counter while starting up the shower, I have to admit I live in a fairly sized apartment. Two bedroom, single bath and an adjoining kitchen/living room area. It’s in a good area, and I enjoy the pretty view we get of the city. My Mom always says when she visits that it holds the perfect balance of comfort, not too small to be claustrophobic, yet not too big to feel empty, and it makes me smile when she’s that. I don’t know why, but I like having Mom’s approval. I step into more

If you do agree why? please explain. My perspective is this, Our Bill of Rights states that we have feedoms, with those freedoms comes responability. So I understand the argument that people do not want to breathe in others smoke. But should all public places be band for something that is legal to purchase. Should a person have the right to have a business that either caters to smokers or not? why should the goverment ban something when it is legal. And as a none smoker dont you have the right to choose wether or not you want to go into the business that allows smoking. So why are your rights worth more than the rights of a smoker? why is it that you can drive you SUV in someones face that doesnt own a car and make them breathe in your exaust. Why is it that a smoker is the highest taxed person in the USA? Is that right? if you believe it is, let me ask you this, would it be right to start putting high taxes on things like red meat, Junk food, vegatibles, etc. just because our goverment doesnt like them for one reason or another. As you see this question is less about a smoker than it is about the opening of the pandoras box of spot taxing. I feel this is just the first in many steps that our goverment and lobysts have taken to break our laws. And put such Illegal taxes on certain groups. Lets face it we in this country have a right to be stupid and to kill ourselves if we wish. So for one I do not support smoking but on the other hand, I strongly disagree with the way smokers have been mistreated by our goverment and society as a whole when it comes to personal rights and taxes. All I can say is remember when the goverment starts taxing something you enjoy and you think its unfair just remember this is where it all started, but because you either dont care or hate smoking you enabled our goverment to eventually take your rights away down the line. more

The move concerns airport police who worry about Middle Eastern men loitering inside the building. After 9/11, the airport beefed up its police force to help prevent terrorist attacks. "Why are we constructing places of worship for them inside our airports?" said an airport official who requested anonymity. "Why are we catering to their rituals? We don't do it for any other religion." Other major airports also are dealing with increased demands from Muslim cabdrivers. (Story continues below) For instance, cabbies at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport recently caused a stir when they refused to carry passengers possessing alcoholic beverages or accompanied by seeing-eye dogs. Alcohol is forbidden in Islam, and dogs are considered unclean. There are approximately 250 taxicab drivers operating at KCI Airport in Missouri, one of the largest airports in the U.S., linking some 10 million passengers between mid-America and other U.S. cities. Approximately 70 percent of the drivers are of Middle Eastern heritage and practice the Islamic faith, sources say. KCI Airport Police are responsible for the cab drivers, including the holding areas of the building. The KCI Aviation Department, which oversees the police, recently expanded the taxicab facility restroom area to include the construction of four individual foot-washing benches. The cost of the project is not immediately known. A spokeswoman for the engineering department said she could not break out the figures. KCI Airport Police Capt. Jim Harmon declined comment, explaining, "This is a touchy subject." He referred questions to the KCI Aviation Department. In a cleansing ritual known as ablution, Muslims are required to wash their feet before praying to Allah five times a day. They often complain that public restroom sinks do not accommodate their needs. Floor-level basins make it easier for them to perform their foot-washing ritual. The Council on American-Islamic Relations has pressed government agencies and businesses to install the foot basins in restrooms. The controversial Muslim lobby group advises employers to allow Muslim workers time to perform both the washing ritual and prayer, which "is usually about 15 minutes," according to a pamphlet CAIR publishes called, "An Employer's Guide to Islamic Religious Practices." The Islamic purification ritual, known in Arabic as "wudu," involves a 10-step process, which includes: 1. Praising Allah while washing both hands up to the wrist three times, making sure that the water reaches between fingers and under rings. 2. Rinsing out the mouth thoroughly three times, using the right hand (the one not used for cleaning private parts) to bring the water to the mouth. 3. Snorting water into the nostrils from the right hand, three times, to cleanse them of demons that Muslims believe reside there, clearing the passages of any mucous using the left hand. 4. Washing off the tip of the nose with the left hand. 5. Washing the entire face three times from right ear to left ear. 6. Continuing to wash from forehead to throat. 7. Washing the right arm and then the left arm, three times, from the wrist up to the elbow, removing watches. 8. Moving wetted palms over the head from the top of the forehead to the back of the head. 9. Passing the wetted tips of the fingers into the grooves and holes of both ears, and also passing the wetted thumbs behind the ears and ear lobes. 10. Finally, washing both feet to the ankles starting with the right foot, including between the toes, then reciting: "Ash-hadu an la ilaha illal lahu wa ashhadu anna Muammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh" – meaning there is no god but Allah and he has no partners, and Muhammad is his servant and messenger. more
