Business suffers as drivers keep going

The Christchurch City Council expects the frustration for businesses, commuters and residents to continue until mid-September.

Donna Dahren, owner of the Mudfish Cafe in Ferry Road, said she had enough work for only five staff. She employed eight before the work began.

"I have lost a lot of my passing morning trade because when you are in that kind of queue you just don't want to stop and get out of your car. I have had staff leave as I can't keep their hours up."

A delay in getting a fibreglass sewerage pipe from Saudi Arabia meant the original completion date of June 20 was put back to September 16.

"They should have had it New Zealand-made and then they wouldn't have had to wait," Dahren said.

The manager of Groundswell Sports, Allan Taylor, called the work "a pain". more

UDPATE 1-Lufthansa says fuel, strikes to hit passenger business

DE: Quote, Profile, Research) main passenger airline business lower this year, the German group said on Wednesday.

Bookings were stable overall, but Europe's second-biggest carrier said the financial crisis and spikes in raw material prices were weighing on the economy and could hit travel.

It also expected the group's fuel bill to reach 5.56 billion euros ($8.7 billion) this year versus 3.86 billion last year.

"It is not excluded that economic developments may dampen demand for flight travel in the second half of the year," Lufthansa said.

"If the oil price remains at these record levels it must be assumed that, despite revenue growth, (the passenger) segment will not be able to repeat last year's result." Lufthansa stuck to its goal to match last year's group operating result of 1.38 billion euros this year after reporting late on Wednesday that operating profit rose 45 percent to 705 million euros in the first six months of this year. more

Starting Photography Business Questions asked

Open Question: How do I start up an LLC in Michigan?

I'm thinking about trying to start up a small photography business for myself, and just wanted to know how I go about all that, and the pitfalls, pro's and con's, etc. Thanks in advance! more

Open Question: Amateur Photography hourly rate?

I'm an amateur photographer. I'm experienced but don't have the money to start a business yet.Anyways... I got contacted by a potential client who found me through my website. He owns a small modeling agency and wants to revamp his client's portfolios by getting new pictures done. He has ALL the equipment(lights, backdrops etc...minus the camera and photographer) and it's going to be done at HIS studio/business. He has 24models. He wants to know what I will charge for an hourly rate. Should I charge a higher hourly rate($40/hr?) and give him the CD-DVD digital prints with full rights?Should I charge a median hourly fee($20/hr) and then charge an amount for the amount of images on the CD?(20images=$25 for example?) Should I make a small watermark for my images on the CD? ANY ADVICE?! more

Open Question: Photography business , tips please ?

My dad can't get a job because of the recession and he is a photographer. He got £1000 from a business starting place so he can run his own business. Just a wee one, it will be in the forum in the next town where its little three walled bits and people rent and sell their stuff. What can he do to help business ? also do you get photography shops that sell art supplies ? I think it'd be pretty cool lol. Also what can I do there ? I'm 14 and he has never taught me about photography, he said I could maybe do the phones once it gets busy but what can I do until then ? I was looking for a part time job anyway lol. so any tips would be useful :) more

Open Question: Can I claim deductions on my photography equipment and what not without it being an official business?

This year I have started a photography business, however I do not have a business license yet for it. I made some rather high expense purchases for equipment and did in fact make a reasonable amount of money this year, which I plan to include on my taxes. My question is, can I claim this equipment as a business expense even though I do not have a business license or anything like that? more

Resolved Question: Ended a long friend ship, now being harassed.?

First of all, I am so sorry for how long this turned out to be. I really needed to get a lot off of my shoulders. I have been friends with a girl for about 11 years now. We met in elementary school and grew up together. Our whole friendship has been dreadful on me, and I will say the only reason I stayed friends with her so long is because when growing up, I was teased a lot and she was my only friend. Now I am married to a wonderful man and expecting our first baby. She got pregnant young, with a man 10 years older than her. I adore and love her daughter, but I just can not have this girl in my life any more. I am not sure if she has a jealousy issue, or what her problem has been, but all of these years she found ways to drag me down. When I was 12, my dad began a cocain addiction. It was very hard on me, and I became very suicidal. It was a stage I was able to pull out of, and move on, but in a fight we had last year, she brought up how she wishes I would go snort coke with my dad. Mind you, we are adults now, and my dad still has this addiction. I put up with her very rude remarks. Every time I would stand up for my self when she put me down, she would tell me that I should commit suicide. Now, over the years she has matured some, but not enough that I can be friends with her. I am a very nice natured girl, and I hate to say these things about her. Her and I live about twenty minutes apart. She refuses to get a job or drivers license, but her boyfriend has one. There really is no effort on her side to try and hang out, but I will always invite her to our game nights, or dinner. She never ends up being able to make it. I never had a problem with this, but the thing is, she will go on all of our networking sites saying that she can not stand when friends won't go and pick her up to hang out. She always tries to offend me through bulletins and posts. She won't make them directly at me, but it is in plain sight that they are. She asks me how I am doing, and how my photography business is doing, and how my husband and I are doing, and when I respond, she sends out a post saying how she doesn't care how great my life is, and all this stuff that I really can not bring my self to understand. She is very competitive as well. When she asks me what is new and I tell her, she has to top it off. Now I can deal with her being mean to me, saying harsh things about me, but now she is saying things about my husband. My husband recently lost his job, and although we are doing very fine with money right now, he feels very bad that he is not the one supporting his family. She recently sent out another post saying that her friends husband is a low life and needs to step up to the plate and that this mans wife needs to stop motivating him because he should be doing it himself. Like I said, it is never directed to me, but it is plain to see who she is talking about. My husband won't say, but I know this hurt him. This is where my line was crossed. I decided to just end our friendship. I confronted her about the last post she did about my husband, and of coarse to no avail, she denied it had anything to do with me. She can't tell me the problem she has with me first hand, she has to go post it around to every one. I am not trying to be rude or offensive, but her boyfriend works at pizza hut, and they live with her parents rent free. I can't even believe I am being rude about her now, my nature is always nice, but I can not handle her anymore. I finally brought my self to delete and block her off of all of my networking sites. I posted a blog which she reads saying that I am having a fresh start. I never said anything rude about her, or any one she cares about. It was basically my way of letting her know I am done. She texted me for three or four days before reading the blog asking me why I was so upset, and I decided it would be best for me not to text her back. I haven't spoken or wrote her in a week. After she read my blog, she started texting me non-stop. She texted me last night at 2 in the morning, til three in the morning. Text after text saying that I am a horrible person, I deserved to lose every one in my life (dad), and more and more. I continued to just delete and not send her anything back. She was really offending and hurting my feelings, but I know texting her back would make it worst. She than started texting me again today, even more rude things, and than had her adult boyfriend text me calling me and ugly cun*, and a stupid bitc*. Finally, I gave up and blocked her number. She is now logging on to other peoples net working sites (her family, with there permission) and writing me over and over. I can't seem to get away. What can I do to get her to stop? My husband is getting very angry about this and wants to say something, but I really just want to end all means of contact. What can I do? Sorry this is so long, I need to vent and give you the story. After ending our friendship, I feel the weight of the wor more

Resolved Question: Friend advice, friends for years and I want nothing to do with her.?

First of all, I know this is long, but I needed to get it out. Second, I asked this in M&D because you guys are adults and give awesome answers, and if this was asked in friends, I would get 12 year old girls answering. Thanks so much! She is constantly trying to put me down. My life has been so perfect, and when she asks me how I am doing, whats new, and such, and I tell her, she has to compete with me. I have dealt with her so much. In my teen years I went through a horrible suicidal stage, and when she would get mad at me she would tell me to shoot my brains out, and weird things as that. My dad chose to do cocaine after our great relationship, which ruined it all. It was something that truly hurt me, and when my friend and I would fight, she would say things like go snort coke with your dumb dad. I am an adult woman now, and she is to, although she is incredibly immature, but she said these things about my dad last year. I dealt with it so much, but it is to the point she is making snide remarks about my husband. My husband recently lost his job and has been searching every where for a new one. We are doing fine with money, but I know he feels sad about him not being able to support our family. She recently asked how I was and I told her how good my photography business was going, and how great my husband has been doing with my pregnancy and how loving he is. I never meant harm in telling her these things. Immediately after words, she sent out a bulletin sort of thing saying how she doesn't care about my life and how my husband is a low life piece of crap who can't step up to the plate. She never said my name, but the bulletin went along with every thing we talked about. I asked her about it, and she said it was about some one else. Problem is, she does this every time I talk to her. She can't tell me the problem she has with me first hand, she has to go post it around to every one. I know I can delete all contact with her, but when I do this she texts me constantly and is incredibly rude to me. Her other problem is that we live about 20 minutes from eachother, and she constantly complains that I will never drive down to her house to hang out with her. I really do not like wasting gas, and her 'boyfriend' is a rude person I want nothing to do with. I will invite her to dinner or our friend get togethers and she says no, so I feel it is okay to say no to going to her house. I know this post is long and may be immature sounding, but I just need some true help to get out of this mess. Thanks so much and God bless you. more

Resolved Question: Is HTML and Web Design hard to learn?

Is html hard to learn? I am a photography major, and work with photoshop a lot and I have seen how to design a web page and I'm positive I can design one the way I want it to look, but the html part and actually getting it on the web is a whole other process that I don't know. I have heard that you use dreamweaver? Is this right? I have the whole adobe creative suite, so I have dreamweaver. I have been trying to do some graphic design work in photoshop and starting to use illustrator so I can hopefully add it to the list of services that I can provide for people, when I get my business going. The graphic design is going good, I know it is different than web design, but just thought to throw that out there.I would love to be able to create my own web site rather than paying someone, since I will most likely be constantly making changes to the info on it. I know it is going to take awhile and quite a few classes I'm assuming, just curious to how hard the whole thing is to understand. Any advice would be great! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Taxes after starting Home Business?

This year my wife started her own Photography business. We had about five thousand dollars in start-up costs (Camera, Computer, Photoshop, website, etc). Can we write those expenses off? What do we need to do in order to do so? What about gas money and car related expenses if she uses it to go to shoots? She hasn't made a lot from the business yet so I don't think there will be an income tax on the business yet. Please help. more

Resolved Question: Looking for advice from women who had a baby at age 18-22...?

My husband and I have been married for about a year and a half. We are both 21. He has a pretty good job as a contracted graphic designer and owns a photography business and ad agency on the side with a really close friend of his. I help him out with business stuff when I can. We are going to begin looking for our first home closer to the summer, we are currently renting an apartment. I am a full time college student and taking online classes. I'm at a community college right now and only need about 9 more classes and then I can transfer over to the university here in town and finish off my bachelor degree (will take about 2 years and most classes should be able to be taken online). But my husband and I both want to have a baby and start our family so bad we can't stand it! :) I know a lot of people say you are to young or you should finish school first, but we still think we can do it. I'm not sure if maybe I'm just being naive and would like opinions of other people besides my parents haha. I have taken time off of school before, took the year off when we got married so that we could enjoy time together, so I know taking time off when the baby is born and then going back wouldn't be a problem. I want to finish school and it is a big enough priority that I feel I will get it done. I plan on taking online classes so that I can stay home with my child. And my husband is so helpful and always makes sure I'm getting my school work done so I know if I ever needed some quiet time he'd have no problem helping me out. We also have wonderfully supportive and helpful parents and grandparents who are there for us for everything and live very close to us. We want to be young parents, we don't want to wait till were thirty. But what do you think? more

Resolved Question: What to name my business?

I'm wanting to start a small "business" taking photos of military, private security, weapons, law enforcement, and the like. It's going to be more of a hobby but I'd like to market it around a little with business cards maybe just to see if anything can come of it. I was wanting a catchy name for it and the only thing I've come up with so far is "Tactical Ops Photography". Resolved Question: Wedding Photography...Less is more? Or do you want more?

We just started our Photography business in 2009, and are sort of re-vamping for 2010. We don't have a studio and usually meet clients where its convenient (house, coffee shop). Currently we bring 2 sample albums (exact replica of what the clients got), and 2 scrapbook albums with prints, and our laptop, which people can see full weddings if they really want too. We're in a the low bracket for weddings, so I think bringing all of this is sort of our way of proving our quality, since our main way of advertising is craigslist, and most people we meet are scared that we're scammers. But now that we have about 20 weddings under our belt, and most of them have left us reviews on weddingwire, onewed. We were thinking of cutting down. Would you want to see that much if you were meeting a photographer? Or would maybe one sample album and the laptop (which has multiple weddings) be enough? Not to mention most people have seen our work already via our website. Thanks for your input. :DThanks for the tip, but I'm asking more about what to bring to the first meeting. :) more

Voting Question: Copyright Question: Is this infringement?

A few months ago, in order to have a forum to sell some photographs, and offer my services as a photographer, I started a (let's say) "Beautiful Amazement Photography" website. The name came from some random words in a book. Recently, I got an email from a guy claiming he wrote a book a few years ago called "Beautiful Amazement," which is registered with the library of Congress, but otherwise, there are no references to it anywhere online. He said, since I am in publishing, I have infringed on his copyright. I do not believe I am "in publishing"; I have some informational websites and an intention to publish at some point, but the name is associated with photography. I am not interested in fighting it, and I have made no money from this part of my business, so I have decided to change the name, but is this actually infringement? more

Resolved Question: What do you think of my Personal Statement for Photography? (through UCAS)?

"It is estimated that there are over 7000 different languages spoken and written throughout this planet, resulting in extensive language barriers the world over, however, pictures and photography can be viewed, perceived and understood by everyone, everywhere, which is one of the main things that I love about photography. Photography is most definitely my passion and I have been drawn to it since I was very young when my father would take me to air shows throughout the UK to take pictures of aviation, although I had the camera more than he did - something I have done since I was about 5 years old. It amazes me that by clicking a single button, I am capturing a moment in time forever. I lost my grandfather when I was young, and I noticed that as the time passed, the memories faded as well, which furthered my interest in photography as I wanted to preserve as many memories of people and places as i could. As humans, we blink on average, 60 times a minute, so if only I could never close my eyes, I would have a lot more time to see the beauty around me. To me, my camera is just as vital to my being as food and water is, and taking pictures is my way of being able to continually gaze at a scene, situation, or even person that those blinks take away from me. I believe that artists perceive and study the world around them differently to others. What the majority of people may perceive as a derelict eyesore of a warehouse, I can see the beauty within it. The colours in the rusted pipes and doorknobs, the patterns of the peeling paint on the wood, the beauty of the smashed windows and crumbling walls. Besides photography, I am interested in music, film, nature, fashion, art, youth culture, gender, and human rights. I enjoy reading magazines such as i-D & Dazed and Confused and as most people do, I enjoy browsing the internet - the majority of my time is spent on Flickr, discovering new photographers. I also enjoy going to art galleries, as I love everything from contemporary art to photography, paintings to sculptures. I have always been interested in various types of art which helped me decide to take Art for Standard Grade (where I achieved an A) and again for my Highers, which I am taking this year. I have also had various pieces featured in local art galleries. I have recently signed up to Creative Photography evening classes at my local college, which is SQA certificated, in order to improve my photographic techniques, learn more about studio and lighting set-ups and to work with a diverse group of people, who are all as passionate about photography as myself. I also had my work experience at Ayr College in 2008, where I was working under the Digital Marketing Developer. I really enjoyed my work experience as I enjoyed furthering my Photoshop skills, learning about techniques and settings on my camera, and how to use them properly. I also gained more confidence as I took photographs of many students and staff of the college for local publications, and I learned that I had to be more confident and talkative to work with people who I had never met before - a trait which I have carried with me since my first day at college. Between 2006 and 2009, I worked in a local music venue, The Space Place, as their photographer, taking pictures of the live music nights, and from there, I got to know and work with a lot of different people and became a freelance photographer. I also learned how to cope under tight deadlines for photographs to be chosen, edited and delivered. Due to this regular work, I became quite familiar in the local music scene as 'Linzi Clark Photography'. Some of my favourite photographers include Nan Goldin, Daniele Buetti, and of course, Annie Leibovitz. After graduating from University, I hope to either start my own photography business or work for a magazine, similar to i-D or Dazed and Confused." do you think there is anything I should add, change, or remove? thanks :)thanks KK! :) more

Resolved Question: Boyfriend won't work, need advice!?

I have been pulling most of the weight around the house. I make about 3,200 a month after taxes and he makes about 300.00 a or so month doing photography gigs here and there. I pay the electricity, the cable and internet, my car, insurance, furniture bills, cell phones, etc ,etc. Sometimes we struggle mostly because he doesn't make enough money. I worked so hard in school to get my degree to be able to have a decent life. We moved into this huge apartment which he promised to help pay and still no luck. His business in photography due to the economy has been struggling but I told him to get a whatever job meanwhile to bring in consistent amounts of money. He refuses and say he makes more money this way and that he's not going to lower himself. We almost broke up over this but I decided to give it another chance. We even talked about marriage, but now we are hitting financial problems again and he will not get a job. I try to tell him to and he say I'm a gold digger and that I should have more faith. Also that it worries him how money directs my mood. I tell him we owe so much and he says don't worry. He tries to push the business instead of getting a real job. He's here all day doing god knows what while I get up everyday at 6 am to get to work!!!! Am I wrong for telling him to get a job? Also I started thinknig that I'm not gonig ot marry him since I would be paying for al lthe wedding. I do care about him, but it bothers me that he won't help out. I don't wanna be with somebody who would let me struggle when he can easily get a job. more

Resolved Question: Cameras? How Do I Tell The Difference?

I've recently took up photography as a hobby & it's become one of my passion. I'm so in to it that I'm thinking of starting a business (: but I've been looking for a good starter photography camera because right now all I have is a cheapo digital from walmart. but I only want a digital slr, how do I tell the difference between the digitals & film cameras? because some of them look exactly the same. like is the Canon EOS Rebel G 35mm a digital or a film camera? thanks for all your help (:Forgot & The Other Guy That Agreed With Him : I'm Not An Idiot. I was simply asking a question because I was looking at camera's on ebay & craigslist & didn't understand some of the listings. I also so I was thinking of starting a business, that doesn't mean right now, or that I'm some kinda idiot who is going to run her business into the ground. I didn't ask for your opinion on whether or not I should start a business, I asked you a question about a camera, so either answer the question or don't say anything at all. Voting Question: Advice on what subjects to take?

I am in my final year of GCSE and will start college next year. I have no idea what I want to take apart from I know I want to take Maths and Psychology. I was going to take art but do not think I could keep up with the workload and am already finding it hard just doing GCSE art. I might take photography instead though. Another subject I have thought about is english but I am not great at it and don't enjoy it much but apparently it is good if u do it. I am also thinking about business studies but people keep saying universities do not like it and that it is a 'soft' option. Does anyone have any advice o personal experience of these subjects? I have no idea what I want to do at university yet so am trying to keep my options open. For my GCSE's I took art, french, ICT, double science, maths, english, critical thinking AS level, history and geography. more

Voting Question: Starting a photo restoration/editing/etc. business help, ideas and advice?...?

I have always been interested in photography and have always enjoyed being creative with it. I recently took some old pics. of mine and fixed them up. Some had large dots all over from where the pic has been scratched off, faded, crease marks, etc. My dad was amazed at what I could do so easily and we've decided to try and start a small business doing this and hope that theres some earning potentioal especially since I am a young mother of two and am currently unemployed for the moment. I am looking for any helpful ideas, advice etc. on every aspect of accomplishing this. How to charge? How much? How to receive customers and how to make my services available? I am able to offer pick up and delivery but only within a reasonable distance from home obviously and how much to charge for that? My dad said I can accept photos through email, I can set up a website (approx $10/month) edit any photos sent that way, I can place sample water marks on completed photos and if the customer is happy they can pay through paypal and I then send their pic(s) without the water marks. Any ideas, tips would be helpful especially how to price my work and exchange pictures and payment with any customers? more

Resolved Question: How can you get a good job if you have a baby and only an associates degree?

My baby girl is coming in April. I'm working only .75 cents over minimum wage now at my regular job, and I'm trying to start my own photography business, but I have only lived here for 4 months and last month I had only 5 photo shoots and only 1 booked for this month. I was trying to save up for when she gets here. My husband works too, but only part time since he goes to school full time on his GI bill. Some weeks he has lots of work, others; hardly any. I'd like to find another way to work and contribute to the bills once she gets here, but aside from the photography thing, I'm stumped! That will take time to build a client base since I still don't know anyone here, and the only jobs I get are off of craigslist. Rome wasn't built in a day.. Is there anything else I can do, like working for someone that might give me a shot with a baby? Or something that would pay decent enough to hire a babysitter for a couple days a week? Can't really afford to pay a babysitter on minimum wage :-P I'd rather do something that I can bring my baby with me, like a job with childcare, but that is so rare to find, I don't even know how to look for that! How do unskilled single moms make it? I think I would be screwed entirely if I were single now. Sorry if this is rambling, I just found out that I might be getting laid off at my low-wage hourly job and I'm trying not to panic... I was really hoping to be able to save some more money before she gets here! It's not really feasable for me to go job hunting at 27 weeks pregnant when I'll just have to go on leave in a few months?! more

Resolved Question: I am starting my photography business, and have a few questions.?

Now, obviously I am going to do my own research and not rely on yahooanswers, but I would like opinions. I would like to know what kind of paper is the best, glossy, matte, etc... Also I will be using a Canon Rebel 12 MP and a Canon Pixma Printer. Does anyone have experience with these? What do you think of them? I am going to get them Friday and wanted some opinions before I make my final decision. I will be doing family photography, children, baby, engagement. Outdoor only. Also I was going to get Adobe Photoshop, but does anyone have any other suggestions of something better? I am about 6 months away from starting because I want to be fully prepared. Thanks for taking the time to read this. If I left anything out that you think would be helpful for you to know in order to give your opinion let me know. Thanks! Kind Regards, Melissa ; )Yes pets, a good idea! Sorry I had to add this to details because I do not know to reply otherwise. So Yes a canon Rebel I am very well aware of all of my camera options, but I am also aware that it's not just the camera that matters and this is a fine camera with the proper user. I am not trying to open a multi billion dollar company and have been researching for some time. I am not doing this for sole income. I have seen pics taken with this camera and can't tell the difference between it and a $3,000 camera. Although I appreciate your input I still must say, yes I will be using the canon rebel, I feel I can work best with it. I know I am not ready to start tomorrow but have been planning this for a while and like I said am about 6 months away. Thanks, why would I need more than one body? I have multiple lenses already. Well thanks for the opinions however I did not get on here to be dicouraged I am now more eager than ever to get this started and will update this when I am in business. Thanks Blessed. And Thanks taxreff, I have all my business side of this in order I have insurance set up to start when I do and have talked with a tax advisor , etc.. Thank you for that advice thoughThanks Shea, good to know ! ; )Thanks Mick, Well money really isn't an issue so getting a second body will be fine, the reason I was going with this camera is because it's lightweight, I work alot better with lightweight cameras. more

Resolved Question: Schedule C / 4562. Need assistance please.?

In 2009 I started a small photography business and have been open for business. Throughout the year my expenses involved equipment purchases as well as fees to set up a website, forms, props, computer, software and some educational expenses, all totaling about 15k. My income for the year was much less than my expenses. What forms do I need to fill out to deduct all of my equipment purchases? At first I thought I just had to do the Schedule C, but then as I started to go through the Sch C, I find out about the Form 4562. I don't see a spot on Sch C for Equipment purchases, where does this go? Thanks for your assistance.
