The Small Business Zone: Uniquely Serving Entrepreneurs' Business

All the information that an entrepreneur needs to launch a new business or grow their existing small business is neatly, and intuitively organized. They see exactly what they are looking for, nothing more, and nothing less. Its as if someone had done their homework for them. Imagine that.

"The web is a great source for information if you are planning to start a new business or already have a small business" said, Fetie Kaynata (CEO of ISYL). "However, consider the amount of time you have to dedicate to pull together the pieces of information you need in order to move forward on the next step. If you are not well adept at conducting searches on the web by looking for the same piece of information in a variety of ways, you will not come up with the right pool of information in the subject area. more

Starting Business Questions asked

Open Question: Is it normal for your father to threaten to poop in a plastic bag?

Hi! recently i was in the bathroom having a Leisurely shit and all of a sudden my father starts banging on the door threatening to poop in a bag if i don't finish my Business and leave immediately so i ignored it not taking him seriously but that is when i heard the shaking of a plastic bag and my bedroom door shut. At that point i was worried but not enough to stop what i was doing so after about 15 minutes i leave the bathroom to find out that the bathroom in my house downstairs was being occupied by my younger brother and that my father also had to take a dump. I just don't understand why he would threaten to humiliate him self by pooping in a plastic shopping bag and then claiming as his defence that i take to much time as a person to take a shit while on more then one occasions he him self has spent an hour on the toilet playing some game called bejeweled and then stateing that playing this game is a better option then reading while on the toilet. All feedback appreciated. more

Open Question: How do you pick a major when you have two diverse passions?

I'm a second semester freshman and I'm really starting to question my choice of major. I'm currently majoring in Wildlife and Fisheries, and I'm doing so because I've always loved animals and nature in general. In high school I took an AP Environmental Science course and enjoyed it (and made a 5 on the test). I enjoy attending "talks" given by scientists describing their work and findings in my areas of interest and I made an A in introductory Biology and Ecology. On the other hand ever since 4th grade I've loved acting. All throughout high school I was involved in theatre and took part in around 13 productions ranging from full size musicals to children's shows. I love acting and seriously considered majoring in it once, but decided against it because I didn't want to get stuck doing a "liberal arts major type of job" (i.e. Business and/or anything involving an office), teaching (although it wouldn't be terrible), or starving. Additionally I have no desire to live in California or New York (but there could be worse things). So here's the deal. I haven't been in a production since high school and I miss it. Additionally I'm finding several subtle (and not so subtle) things about science that I dislike (I'm not enthralled in any of my classes and I fear there may be a number of courses that I have to take that will be that way), I'm not a big math person, and I'm not big on manual labor or living outdoors for extended periods of time. I know that I haven't been doing science for very long, but I'm beginning to fear that I'm interested in the subjects that science deals with, and not science itself...although of course I'm not sure. Any advice for what I should do? more

Open Question: Jewelry making as a business? how?

Hello I would like to have some information and how I could start my beads jewelry making business. I have been doing this as a hobby for almost three years. My friends and ex-coworkers have all loved the pieces I've made. They've bought some but I don't think all that's enough, I really like what I do and I guess it's only natural for me to want to make it into something greater. My only real challenge is not knowing HOW or where to begin.. my daughter also suggests that I need to network better, because its not what you do it's who you know that helps right? Open Question: What to do about a relative cheating on their taxes for disability? WIll I get in trouble if they 10-99 me?

Okay, so A relative of mine (who owns his own business) is 10-99ing everyone who's worked for him last year, no matter how long they worked, just enough money for them to not have to pay taxes for what they've been supposedly "paid". He also writes off a lot of things (like expensive lunches/dinners) as business expenses, even when it's not even during his work hours. (I don't know if this is legal or not, so if not, disregard this) I am one of these people, and even if I tell him no, he'll do it behind my back. Can I get in trouble for this for being an "accomplice"? How could he be punished if someone found out? I'm mainly concerned for my well-being, because I start college soon and don't want to deal with this crap on FAFSA, but I'm most likely going to have to file for independent anyway. If it's important, I've only worked a few hours, so I've made nowhere near $550 or whatever.I can't really report him, because most of the people who know are the people he's 10-99ing (and I'm not too fond of him so I would definitely be a suspect), and I don't want the whole family throwing a fit and treating me like crap just because i DON'T WANT TO GET IN LEGAL TROUBLE just because he wants to steal more money from Obama than he would get by being honest. more

Open Question: Is it just me, or do people need to start getting over this jay leno/conan o'brien thing?

I guess people have gotten over it a little, But i went on google today, and jay lenos name was at the top of the news list again. Apparently he was on oprah or something. And all the comments were really horrible. I mean, i like both conan and leno. But why does everyone hate jay so much. Its not like he said, you give me my job back or else. They asked him he wanted to come back, yeah, he could have said no, but it's business, everyone is saying that he ripped the job out of conan's hands. His ratings weren't good, so obviously, people didn't care enough to watch his show. Does anyone agree with me.plus, wasn't conan offered the midnight slot or something? more

Open Question: advice on rehabilitation of offenders act when working with children.?

Hi all before we start yes this has happened to me. i have worked with children for 18 years and i am not banned from working with them or deemed unsuitable in any way - i ran my own childcare business for 9 years and have taught for 6 years. recently i changed jobs and have had a little trouble regarding a conviction and a caution that i recieved about 7 years ago. long story short, and not trying to make excuses, a terminal illness in the family resulted in my taking prescription medicine prescribed by my doctor. this reacted badly with alcohol and resulted in two violent offences, one of which i recieved a 12 month conditional discharge and compensation, the other was a caution. i stopped taking the medicine once i realised the connection and hey ho, not a glimmer of trouble before or since. this was what like to define as a 'glip' which was ugly, but happened. anyway, i had understanding employers,i never lost my job, and have been very fortunate with all work since then. i have glowing references off all my previous employers and i have been very lucky. with my new job i have to work in schools - not as an employee of the school. i investigated the proceedure for organisations sharing information on staff CRB's in my local authority and discovered there was no proceedure for it - it was up to each organisation (this includes schools). i decided that i had nothing to hide so volunteered to carry out another disclosure to one of the schools who requested it - thinking that i had nothing to worry about. this has seriously backfired on me. the school has decided that i am a 'potential danger' and had decided not to work with my organisation. the head of that school then rang all the other schools and told them of his decision. now no school will work with me, meaning i cannot carry out my new role effectively. my boss is backing me up as she is satisfied that she carried out background checks with my employers dating back 8 years - 1 year prior to the conviction, but this puts me in a difficult situation. Is the school within its rights to discriminate against me based on this spent conviction? was the head master within his rights to discuss confidential information with other schools? i feel i may have a legal case, because he has defamed me, and it may result in a loss of income/job as a worse case scenario. any employment lawyers out there who can advise me on this further - no win no fee :)! more

Open Question: How do I tell my husband he is being an idiot in a nice way?

Ok, my husband announces today that he would like to go back to school to be a radio or tv personality! Currently, he is a cable man. He started to get a business degree over 8 years ago and is half-way finished that. I told him if he wants to go back to school to finish his business degree. He said he has no interest in that. Also, not to sound harsh, but I really don't think he would ever have shot at being a radio or tv personality. He is 40 years old and he has a very thick Jersey/Philly accent. Two months ago he was talking about getting a pilot's license. He is all over the place. I guess I'm trying to be his voice of reason, but how do I tell him he is being an idiot? I welcome all advice, but would like to see what a man thinks in particular. Is this a man thing? I just don't understand him! more

Resolved Question: How come those on the left think they economy is doing so great yet there is no credit and high unemployment?

Markets Brief Don't Rejoice Over Higher GDP Yet Steve Schaefer, 01.29.10, 11:55 AM ET The U.S. economy crushed expectations by growing at a 5.7% clip in the fourth quarter of 2009, but even as Wall Street rallied on the news there are plenty of warning signs of a slower pace ahead. A restocking of inventories by American businesses drove a large portion of the fourth-quarter increase, contributing 3.4% compared with just 0.7% in the third quarter when growth was a far calmer 2.2%. Excluding the inventory factor, real final sales of domestic product were up just 2.2% in the October-December period, after rising 1.5% from July to September. The big impact of inventories is something of a red flag, particularly since the consumer input to GDP was weaker in the fourth quarter than in the prior period, and Dan Egan, president of the Massachusetts Credit Union League, expects the Feb. 26 updated look from the Commerce Department to rein in the estimate. "[The 5.7% figure] was a surprise," Egan said. "It's an encouraging recovery sign, but there's a difference between Wall Street encouraging and Main Street encouraging." While the data supports arguments that a recovery is building momentum, high unemployment, little job security and limited access to credit are making that story a tough sell to many Americans. The consumer is essentially frozen, Egan added, and even those with jobs are looking over their shoulder and holding back spending. One of the results is that credit unions are seeing an increase in savings, which inched up a tenth of a point to 4.6% in the fourth quarter, as households look to strengthen their defenses against future crises. After starting the day with solid gains, Wall Street pulled back toward even by noon. One factor may be recognition that the 5.7% GDP figure might be revised downward in a month. Even if it's not, Egan warns that the economy can not sustain that pace as the inventory cycle normalizes without a stronger consumer component. Near midday the Dow Jones industrial average was up 24 points at 10,145, the S&P 500 gained just a single point to 1,085 and the Nasdaq slipped into negative territory, losing 5 points to 2,174. In the morning's most high-profile earnings release, Chevron came up short of estimates with fourth-quarter profits of $1.53 a share. It came as little surprise that the integrated oil giant missed the Street's consensus call of $1.70 – Chevron warned last month that pressure on refining margins would put a dent in its results – and in a choppy session investors sent the company's shares up 0.1%. http://www.forbes.com/2010/01/29/briefing-americas-midday-markets-economy-gdp.html?boxes=Homepagechannels more

Open Question: After 15 years at my job, i realized its sucking the life out of me and i hate it. Should i leave?

Ive been in the same job for 15 years (im 45 now), i started at the bottom and worked my way up to the General Manager, i took the business' numbers from $64k a month (average) to over $105k a month (average). The ideas i implemented turned the whole business around and made it the highest grossing business of its kind in the area. My work ethics are great, im never late, i take one vacation a year (they only give me 1 weeks vacation after 15 years of full time work). Im leary to say too much about what i do for a living because i know some of my co-workers read the "Yahoo Answers" section. I can tell you this, its in the bar & grill industry. I don't smoke or drink or do drugs of any kind. The problem is that im miserable, there's no place to go from here and im not appreciated for my efforts. I deal with all the liquor and beer reps, i do most of the repairs to save the company money, i put on, set up and do all the promotions so there's no outsourcing of costs in that area, i design the online ads myself including writing the codes. There's more to what i do, but that gives you an idea. I have been thinking about leaving for over a year, i've paid down my debt to nothing more than a $550 mortgage payment (plus your normal phone, tv, gas, etc..), no car payments, no credit card debt at all. I've saved just over $50k, i have no children but i do have a wife who supports my leaving if i decide too. Im just worried that with this economy, i could be out of work for a long time and the $50k would go fast. What do you do when your miserable, you hate your job, you do not get the respect you deserve and you just want to go? Please reply and give me some insight, include some information about yourself such as your age and other info that will help me understand that you really understand my situation. Thanks so very much. more

What other degrees can you obtain that will make you stand out? Does this mean you shouldn't get an MBA or you should obtain an MBA among other graduate degrees? more

Open Question: How do you feel about the Global warming "scientists" who defrauded the entire world NOT being prosecuted?

Merely due to a six months statute of limitations? I mean these so called "scientists" caused Lord knows how much money to be lost in extra expenses for new start-up businesses and ALMOST initiated a GLOBAL tax to pay for things that are outright lies! Shouldn't these people be in Prison? Aren't they just like Madoff? A elaborate ponzi scheme that they built mostly from nothing and now they get off free? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1246661/New-scandal-Climate-Gate-scientists-accused-hiding-data-global-warming-sceptics.html more

Open Question: How can you find out if a company is blacklisting you after a layoff?

Despite the fact that I've started my own business I need to know something. I am a former human services employee and I moved to another town recently, I was unable to gain employment in my field and despite the economy I had many contacts to get me back to work. But something didn't compute in my search, I am very realistic about my prospects but I would get two great interviews under my belt, only to find out that I was out for the count. I didn't always agree with the management staff of my last employer and I'm skeptical about their feedback to prospective employers. more

Open Question: My ex- mother in law. I say my ex due to my husband died years ago. Anyway,?

she always made it a point to disagree with others. She CAUSED trouble with all of us. Finally, I said something like, "I feel everyone has to do what they FEEL is best for theirself, regardless of what you think." YOu have to allow that."She went on with.."well, they SHOULD DO blah, blah blah. Basically, it was none of her business what they did. It was not anything wrong. How do you convince her that "no one calls her because they know she will disagree with them hostilly and start yelling?' more

Open Question: HELP! Am I over reacting?

I have Mother in Law issues with my husband. I have summarized all she has done, please let me know if I am over reacting. I know it is long but please read it will make sense in the end. 1. She never took time off to spend with me and our 1st son when we came down to fl on our own when he was 6 months old, my spouse had no vacation time and could not join. 2. Always gave me dirty looks when my spouse is not around, Proof our 1st son took a picture of me and you can see her dirty look at me in the picture. This was mine and our 1st son’s second trip to see her alone. 3. She did not come to see our 2nd son when he was born, even after I asked her to 4. She did not send our 2nd son a present for his first Christmas. 5. She did not send our 2nd son a 1st B- day present. 6. She did not send anything or call our 2nd son for his 3rd birthday. 7. I thought I would give her another chance to be a good grandmother so, we flew her up to watch the boys when we went to Vegas. She did not take the time (2 days) we gave her to spend with the boys, she wanted her sister and they schemed a plan to go on a road trip to visit their sister in another state and did not tell us anything until they got to our house. 8. During this babysitting visit, she did not watch our 2nd son and he got hurt so bad it took almost a year for the goose egg to completely disappear form his forehead. 9. She lives in another state and when we visit her she always sides with her other grandson over our 2nd son, no matter what. 10. I used to confide with a few issues I was having with my husband, hoping she would be a parent and express the importance of taking care of his family and stuff. She ended up telling me “you can divorce __my spouses name__ and I will still be o.k. with you.” That was the last time I confided in her or even talked to her really. That was approximately 4 years ago. We have been married for 15 years. 11. Her other grandson lured our two sons into my MIL’s bedroom to look at her and her husbands rifles. She caught them and told our kids not to tell us. 12. When we were at the Nick hotel, she went and bought her grandson a pop and popsicle and did not get anything for our kids. 13. I invited her to stay with us for 1 night at the Nick hotel and she invited her grandson and then left him with us and did not stay even though she would have had her own room. 14. When my husband told her I was pregnant with our 3rd child her first words were “oh __my husbands name__ , are you o.k. with that?” 15. I wanted to have a girl and did not want to feel jinxed so I told my husband to tell her not to tell me we were having a girl, and as soon as she spoke to me, she said what he told her not to say to me. 16. Even after she said that, I kept on trying and asked her to come when the baby comes. She has 4 wks vacation and she said she had no money. She had 8 months to save for the trip. 17. She had money for a tummy tuck, and a boob lift, and a bunch of other non-important things, but no money to visit her grandkids…… or send them a gift…. 18. She did not send our 3rd son a present for his first Christmas. 19. She did not send our 3rd son a 1st B- day present. 20. When she did visit in April 2009 she planed her trip around her grandson’s spring break (not our kids spring break when we were all available to visit with her), she visited us for 1 day, and the first thing she cared about doing was driving our sports car. Her and her husband were both rude and disrespectful to me when I tried to get a picture of them for my husband. I took the day off of work and took the kids out of school so that we can spend with them. My husband could not take the day off of work. The following is what caused me to be here writing this today. 21. July 2009, my MIL and her daughter turned their backs to my face again (they have been doing this for 15 years). My husband’s aunt started with me, I told her to mind her own business (I wasn’t even talking to her, I was talking to my sister-in-law’s boyfriend) then she got so mad she left crying. My MIL went out side and complained to my husband about me, my husband got mad at me for not letting the boys sleep over his sister’s house, and he blamed me for everything. He told me he was not taking my shit anymore and told me to get my shit we were leaving back home. Now we just arrived in FL for our 2 ½ weeks vacation and was only planning on spending 4 days with his family and meet up with my family for 2 weeks of fun. Just so you know, I was going to let the boys sleep over, I was saying no because the boys were fighting in the hotel, but I was going to let them go. He does not believe me. 22. Approximately 5 years ago, my MIL said there are 7 signs of a cereal killer and her grandson (my sister-in-laws son) exhibits’ 3 of those signs, but he is on meds so there is nothing to worry about. Well when my SIL and her boyfriend had thher boyfriend had their daughter last year, she told me she was afraid that her son, who was 8 at the time, would hurt her new baby, but he is actually very protective of her. I am happy for that, and because of that I was going to still let my boys sleep over my SIL’s house. 23. That night my husband called his mother and she said to tell me: a. I was no longer welcome in her house, b. our marriage was not supposed to last this long, c. our 2nd and 3rd sons were never supposed to be born d. The whole family feels this way, e. No one in the family likes your wife My husband said these words to me in the hotel room in front of our children. He did not say he was hurt, he did not tell me how he felt, he just kept quiet. I cant get past this. Am I over reacting? more

Open Question: Are you proud to be a American.?

I got this e-mail and I loved it- I want to pass it to as many people as possible. Please read below: Red Shirt If the red shirt thing is new to you, read below how it went for a man... Last week, while traveling to Chicago on business, I noticed a Marine sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together.. After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who'd been invited to sit in First Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home. No, he responded. Heading out I asked? No. I'm escorting a soldier home.. Going to pick him up? No. He is with me right now. He was killed in Iraq , I'm taking him home to his family. The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honor for him. He told me that, although he didn't know the soldier, he had delivered the news of his passing to the soldier's family and felt as if he knew them after many conversations in so few days. I turned back to him, extended my hand, and said, Thank you Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do. Upon landing in Chicago the pilot stopped short of the gate and made the following announcement over the intercom. "Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to note that we have had the honor of having Sergeant Steely of the United States Marine Corps join us on this flight He is escorting a fallen comrade back home to his family. I ask that you please remain in your seats when we open the forward door to allow Sergeant Steely to deplane and receive his fellow soldier. We will then turn off the seat belt sign." Without a sound, all went as requested. I noticed the sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane, and his action made me realize that I am proud to be an American. So here's a public Thank You to our military Men and Women for what you do so we can live the way we do. Red Fridays. Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority." We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing. Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday -- and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that ... Every red-blooded American who supports our men and women afar, will wear something red. By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, coworkers, friends, and family, it will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on. The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is. "We need your support and your prayers." Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example, and wear something red every Friday. more
