Ah, sun, sand, and arguing over the damn PDA
As McLean Mashingaidze-Greaves, a Toronto based new-media entrepreneur and long-term heavy PDA user admitted to me (via his BlackBerry): "While it's great to have the Internet in your pocket, it's socially regressive in some ways. Like a lot of people, I sometimes use the device to avoid talking to people and to manage boredom."
There's no consensus among experts about whether being continuously, though partly, engaged is a good or a bad thing.
Ray Kurzweil, an American futurist and inventor - who created a popular music synthesizer in the eighties, the first "reading machines" to translate text into speech, and the first flat-bed scanners - reminded me of the importance of choice when it comes to our communication devices.
"I don't believe that being online all the time increases stress. more
Green lawns have to come with common sense
The advertising industry is powerful and persuasive. People want to do their part in making their neighborhood look good. We are convinced that a uniform, green lawn must sit in front of our houses.
Keep in mind that you are exposed to this advertising because someone wants to sell you something. Corporations want to sell chemicals, or a service that will apply chemicals. To do this, they must convince you that maintaining a uniform, green lawn is practically a civic duty.
Let's consider what's being sprayed on your lawn. "Cosmetic pesticides are chemical or biological substances used to destroy living things such as insects, plants and fungi for the purpose of enhancing the appearance of a lawn or garden."

Councilors eye Bremenfest
The village will soon begin to advertise for the festival, which will take place Aug. 15-17, New Bremen Mayor Jeff Pape said. The councilors also approved the liquor license permit for the festival.Pape also brought up the idea of having fireworks the Sunday of Bremenfest as a way to celebrate the village’s 175th anniversary. The mayor said a third of the cost would come from the parks division and the rest from the Bremenfest Committee and a party that Pape wouldn’t name until they were fully committed. Pape said he met with the groups Monday night to decide where the fireworks would launch and the division of the cost — $3,000 each, totaling $9,000."I promised the chief (Fire Chief Bob Kuck) it wouldn’t be an annual thing," Pape said, adding that Kuck had been against the fireworks in the beginning. The parks division spending had to be approved by councilors because it would be spending money it didn’t budget for, said Village Solicitor Steve Smith. more
Avon firefighters to raffle scooters
Il Bello is Italian for beautiful, fine, handsome, lovely persons or things, according to the Chinese manufacturer's Web site, www.flyscooters.com.
Anyone with a driver's license can drive the 49cc scooters, which require a $40 RMV sticker that is good for two years, said Diane Park, who with Dan Kourafas last month opened Danny's Scooter Shop at 105 Memorial Drive (Route28) in Avon.
“The bike is just gorgeous," said Park.
Hardiman said raffle tickets cost $50 and there are 199 tickets. Proceeds will benefit the Avon Firefighters Relief Fund and the Jimmy Fund, he said.
Tickets are available from Avon Firefighters Relief Association members and at Danny's Scooter Shop, or by calling Hardiman at 774-292-9737.

Voting Question: How do you go about getting retail shoe racks?
We own a small business and sell clothes, shoes, blankets, perfumes, so on and since we started everything has just kind of been kept in boxes and stacked and not really organized recently we finished construction of a room addition to our home so we can sell out of there instead of the livingroom. we also feel we should organize more. so where do you get those shoe racks that stores like payless and wal mart have? not small 4 platform ones for closets, but the big ones in retail. Where do you get retail shelves for clothing and racks for hanging clothes? I don't care about the price, company that sells it, wether we have to assemble it or it's sent like that, or shipping costs. New is preferred but used is fine All help is much appreciated moreVoting Question: I think I may be able to get a job here. I certainly want to... How do I start?
There is a small, but successful restaurant near my house. (It's a little gourmet pizza place.) I have been looking to gain some experience in waitressing (I would really prefer to help work my way through college doing that rather than retail, but I know most places prefer that you have experience, so I figure I should start building that now, while I'm 16 rather than 18.) , and the owner is usually serving the food and complaining about being understaffed. However, he never has any kind of "Help Wanted" sign/posting, so I don't know how exactly to ask if he's hiring. It just seems strangely presumptuous, as if you already know the answer will be "Yes," or it would be hugely disappointing if it were a "No," to just walk in and ask, and yet it seems rude/awkward to wait until my next trip, trying to become an employee while in a customer's shoes. I'm mostly confused because it's a small business and probably doesn't bring in employees on a conveyor belt like my corporate retail job does. (I have several reasons that I am hoping to trade that one, partially because "It's just not for me," and "I've been there too long," but I also because the schedule is becoming difficult to deal with--I'm either getting five hours on Sunday and then a dead week, or I'm legally maxed out for every day, and as result, the money is becoming unreliable. This is primarily due to overstaffing. I know this restaurant treats its employees very well. Plus, the customers are generous tippers! I also just feel I'm more likely to thrive in that kind of work environment.) I'm just not familiar with the hiring process in any place that doesn't have online applications and a phone with 10 extensions. moreResolved Question: I think I may be able to get a job here. I have loads and loads of brand name clothes shoes jewellery school uniforms etc.that I would like to start selling from my home. Can anyone please give me advice on how to start up? I am prepared to leave my job to start this up at home as a full time committment. Thanks moreVoting Question: Finding Suppliers for eBay Items: Shoes, Clothing, Socks, Pants - [I am a PowerSeller/Top Rated Seller]?
Hello, I was wondering what are some things I could do to gt a hold of some clothing suppliers. I am currently an eBay PowerSeller and Top Rated Seller and do many sales already. So I have the funds for more inventory. However, I am looking for starting up a long-term sustainable business model with returning customers; such as an eBay Store. I am looking for items such as Mall Outlets and Department Store Overstock or items that did not sell. I am also interested in shoes: Puma, Addias, Nike, etc, from Retail Shoe stores. Some kind of wholesale retail excess I can get, and relist. As shoes are easy for my system to list. We just need to write a litle, size, and take several high quality pictures, as we have a custom made template. I trid to contact a shoe seller at my local mall by phone, but I really didn't know how to phase or inquire about getting their stock. They said "Our company takes care of that." And the conversation ended. It was an employee; so he was referring for the store he worked for. I don't know if I should contact the manager, or if it is right for me to request information or the warehouse they send their stock to. I have been browsing sites such as: http://www.liquidation.com/ I figured, the stores send the items back to the distributor, and since they cant resell the shoes as new, it's not like the make it back to the retail stores for resale.. so I am just wondering where they go... http://www.liquidation.com/ seems to be a selling platform for department store returns, shelf pulls, and overstock items.. However, I figured I could contact local stores and get inventory before it is returned to the distributor or some central warehouse, etc. This way I could inspect the goods, make connects and find other goods as well. Since on sites such as http://www.liquidation.com/, there is no contact between the seller and buyer, so there is no way to arrange off-site trading... which is kind of what I want at this point. Regards, Christopher moreResolved Question: What do you business-type people think about this location?
I own a store in a small plaza. Medium-high income area. Highly populated city. The size of the store is about the size of a small liquor store. Next to the store (which is empty now), is a nail/hair salon, a small shoe store, a Japanese food restaraunt, a coffee shop, a bank, and a cell phone store, and also a dermatology business. What would be a profitable business to start at this loaction. Preferably retail of an item that cannot really be purchased online efficiently. moreResolved Question: wholesale suppliers...........shoes clothes accessories bags?
hi my cousin is considering starting a retail business selling clothes and shoes can anyone suggest any sites or stores that she can order from which are quite reasonable moreResolved Question: I need to pick between two part-time retail jobs...?
I'm 18 and have recently started a Fashion Business course at university. For a year before starting, I worked pretty much full-time for a shoe concession within a department store. In August, the company went bust and we were made redundant. My manager from that job was then employed as the manager of a new shoe concession within the same store. After being made redundant. I went to work part-time for an older women's fashion chain. I don't dislike my current job, I just much prefered my old one. My old boss has offered me a job within her new shoe concession and I don't know which job to take. Job 1 (Clothes shop) - Pro's Reasonably well paid for a retail job. Time-and-a-third on a Sunday. Although I rarely work Sundays. Maybe 1 Sunday in 6. Easy. Get on reasonably well with the staff. 33.3% discount. Good uniform allowance. Bonus if the store makes monthly targets. Evening shifts are worked in two's. Con's Although I get on with staff, I don't really have anything in common with them. I don't care for the products. Evening shifts are only 3 hours. (I have to work evenings, I'm a student) I don't feel I'm particularly good at it. I'm okay but not great. I've been told I don't have the "look" of the company. I don't like what I have to wear as uniform. Job 2 (Shoe concession) - Pro's Boss I get on great with and have so much in common with. Evening shifts are 4 hours instead of 3. I must be good at selling shoes or my old boss wouldn't have offered me this job. Comission. Free uniform. I like what they sell. Great company image - good on CV and good experience. (I'm studying fashion) Con's I currently don't know their rate of pay. I currently don't know their discount rate. Ugly uniform. Have to wear heels to work. If the old concession was unsuccessful, who's to say this one will still be there in a year? My old boss is really stressed out and I don't know if she's going to stay at this job, so one of the reasons for going for this job might not last. Evening shifts are worked alone. Tell me what you think! GO!CFPwunaB - I can't do both, they over-lap in terms of hours and I need time to study and sleep. scarlett - I don't plan on taking the job without knowing the pay or discount. I'm meeting with my old boss tomorrow to talk about some of the things I'm unsure of. Thanks, both you guys! moreResolved Question: Help with accounting assignment!?

What are the best mix of sizes and quantities for opening stock?
To give you a bit of a feel for what my business will be - I will be selling surf/skate clothing, footwear and accessories. My shop is in a prime position (1 of 2 retail centres in town), has 140 sqm of floorspace with a 6m window frontage and 14 sqm storage upstairs. I personally have never worked in a clothing or shoe shop before (but I am passionate and determined, so please don't attempt to talk me out of it), but I have been involved with stock ordering in my experience in retail. The only thing I'm concerned about is the starting stock. I have a figure of $130,000 of stock to buy, but are there certain sizes (mens & womens) that are more popular than others that I should buy more of, and how many of each item (eg. blue shirt) do I buy? A friend of mine who I don't see very often calls me up at least twice a month telling me how much money she has. Last night she called to tell me how much money she made last year, how much she will get on her tax return and what she spent at the retail store, including new televisions, furniture and home accessories. I am so tired of hearing this. The only reason why she gets a huge tax check is because she has two kids and can get the EIC. I don't have any children so I don't get thousands like her. When we hung up the phone, I started crying. I felt like crap. I can barely afford a new pair a shoes and she is bragging to me about her new 32 inch tv. It is already well known that she has a pocketfull of money, why must she rub it in my face? I live beneath the poverty line and I am doing the best I can to lift myself out. She knows my situation and knows I don't have much money and it makes me feel like I am dirt poor. Why would she even tell me how much her salary is? It isn't my business. What hurts the most is she acts like she is poor, but surely isn't. She doesn't know what it is like to be without. Why do friends do this? My fiance's Mom and Grandma babysit my son when I work and go to school which is a few days a week (3-5 half days usually).Well I worked today for the first time in over a week and my college is still out on break so they have only been watching him 1-2 days in a week or two time period since his dad is also off. Some weeks not at all. Well tonight I was supposed to work 5:30-9:30. I work retail and the mall closes at 9. Well we had a last min customer with a return so we didn't get to close the doors or count the registers until after 9 instead of before like usual. Well I get off and my fiance is calling me asking where I'm at I got off at 10:20 instead of 9:30. He tells me his Mom had called him and asked if I really was at work because I was wearing white shoes and we are supposed to wear black and that I wasn't there yet. For one my black shoes were in my car I didn't think I had to tell them that as it's none of their business what color shoes I have on or have to wear. Two it's retail not some 9-5 job so if someone comes in at the last minute all we can do is wait for them to finish and leave. It wouldn't bother me so bad expect that they babysit his brother's kid and his wife doesn't even work. She just drops her off and comes back whenever the hell she wants and they don't say a thing. She left the kid for 15 hours one day when she told them all she had to do was go to a doctor's appointment and the store. When I got there they didn't say anything. I picked him up and got his coat on and then his grandma starts to tell me that I need to take with me all the toys he got for Christmas. They are in a huge box and are heavy. I'm PREGNANT! His Mom says she can't lift that and I say the same thing and his grandma starts arguing and saying yes she can. I said no I can't his Mom says she can wait until he comes over to get them that I can't do it. Then she says well if you don't take it I'm going to put it in the garage. I don't say anything and get my son and walk out the door. I'm so sick of their crap they pull stuff like this all the time. I told my fiance that they aren't going to watch him anymore. I'm sick of dealing with it all the time. He thinks I'm over reacting and that it isn't right to keep them from him. I don't think it's right that I have to explain myself to them all the time. Especially since I've told them before we were planning to put him in daycare and the boo who around and talk about how bad daycares treat babies and that my son couldn't say if someone was being mean to him since he doesn't talk yet. Do you think I'm overreacting or what? My fiance went over there to tell them off I guess but I really doubt he said anything too harsh.I know it's long bare with me I'm pregnant and crabby.I wouldn't keep them from him I'm just tired of them being the primary care provider. I get no break from them and they general end up making me in a bad mood. moreResolved Question: how do i go about opening a dollar store or shoe store or any retail store?

Advice appreciated... long story?
I really need some advice from parents who've been in my shoes or who can offer helpful advice... My husband and I have been married almost 2 years. I'm 21. He's 25. He got his bachelors degree in aviation 2 years ago, but has not been able to find a job in that field. He doesn't want to fly for a living-- a decision he made his senior year of college. Since he was about to graduate, he just stayed with his aeronautics major. Ideally, he'd like to work for an aeronautics company like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, or an airline or airport-- something that makes his aeronautics degree not completely wasted. Anyway, he's still working at the same place he worked in college-- a podonk cell phone store. He's applied for management jobs, but even though he has a BS and has been with the company 2.5 years, they always promote someone else (usually people who only have a high school diploma and no college, but years of management experience). Like I said, he'd like to do management or work corporately in the aviation field. Until this month, he'd never even considered going back to school. I'm getting ready to graduate with my BS in interior design and business. All I've ever wanted is to have the bills paid and have a family. I don't care about having brand new cars, gigantic 6 bedroom houses on the beach... none of that frivolous crap. I'm a family person. Last January, we had decided to start "trying" for a baby this month. We tossed the condoms a few months early & haven't been using protection since August. Not pregnant yet. But now, even though I've wanted this for so long and prayed about it almost every day and felt completely peaceful with our decision, now I feel confused. My husband is pretty much going to have to get his MBA to get a decent job. A few years ago, having a bachelors degree made you cutting edge. Now, it just makes you another number. Any advice with that would help. But my main question is, should we wait? We're "financially stable" now. If he goes to grad school, his school loans will be deferred again and we'll be even better off. He'd, of course, be working full time still. We both want to have a family more than anything else, and we feel really... cheated... that he's spent so much time and money in college and can't find a job other than retail. Thanks for taking time to read my question. Please, no rude answers.I'd like to add, I don't work. In about 2 weeks, I start a volunteer job at the hospital. Then I need to do more volunteer work over Christmas break. The university I go to requires sophomores, juniors, and seniors to do 20 hours of community service per semester. I'm a senior and haven't done ANY b/c up till this semester, I worked 30 hours a week and took 15 credit hours. Now, we're "financially stable" enough for me not to work. moreResolved Question: help with a shoe store?

My wife is starting a business (Jazzercise center), and we need help navigating through the plethora of options available for both table top credit card terminals and merchants. Does anyone have any recomendations for solid performers in both categories? Is it better to buy or "lease" a terminal directly from a merchant? Do you recommend something like Quickbooks processing instead? As far as use, she will be using the terminal to charge "partial months" dues for new students, until their info is set up via an automatic recurring EFT with corporate. She'll also be collecting joining fees with it, and from time to time use it for processing the sale of some actual retail items (apparel, shoes, nutritional supplements, etc.) So the long and short is we need a solid solution that will have a long shelf life, but not something we'll be running hundreds of transactions on every day. Thanks in advance! moreResolved Question: Help. Cheap Clothing Expert!?
