Business Casual Rule No. 1: No Sweats

Everyone thinks they know what the term "business casual" means (Button-downs and khakis? Check.), but some of us clearly could use a refresher course. Consider this reader question:"I work in the administrative offices of an industrial company. The dress code is 'business casual,' but that turns into jeans and product-sponsored polo shirts or even product-sponsored T-shirts and sweat shirts. (Our chief executive officer, vice president and heads of human resources and accounting all dress in that manner.)"When I showed up in slacks, heels and a sweater my first day, I got looked at as though I were from Mars. I would like to dress up a little more for work, but anything too far from the jeans-and-polo look would make me stick out like a sore thumb. Any suggestions?"My immediate suggestions center on the other members of your office. more

Harrisburg begins moving forward

SALINE COUNTY - Flood water is receding in most of Harrisburg, but quite a bit of water remains on the ground and many businesses and residences have suffered flood damage. The city's three largest grocery stores remain closed, creating an inconvenience for area residents.Mayor Valerie Rose Mitchell decided to try a plan devised by city officials -- build a small road from Small Street to the tire and auto section of Wal-Mart to allow partial access to the Arrowhead Point Shopping Center. At press time, the road was built but it was not definite the city would allow the businesses to open. The road will not open unless city officials decide enough water has receded from the parking lots at Arrowhead Point. Employees of the shops in the shopping center will be asked to park at the far side of the lots, near the floodwater, so a barrier is created and motorists don't drive into flooded areas. more

304 Project a Pain for Businesses, But a Gain for Bremerton

The final phase of the Gateway project is in full swing, as those who drive Navy Yard Highway can attest.

The Highway 304 improvement and beautification began more than 10 years ago at the ferry dock and has been working its way out of town ever since.

This phase includes cutting off access from the highway to businesses and providing it from a rebuilt Charleston Beach Road. To get to Westbay Auto Parts, Cliff's Cycle Center, Miller Sheetmetal and Affordable Ignition Interlock, customers will need to turn on to Charleston Beach Road at its intersection with Highway 304, across from shipyard's Missouri gate entrance. Four-foot-high black fencing along the highway will deter drivers from trying to take a shortcut.

"It's definitely going to impede business," Westbay Auto Parts district manager Louis Kimmel said of losing its driveway and parking along the highway. more

Open Question: How do I go about getting a retail tax license for an online retail business?

My husband is looking to start an online retail business selling ammo and shooting/hunting supplies (but not the firearms themselves). What kind of licenses do we need and how do we go about getting them? Thanks more

Open Question: what is the best way to handles this situation on my resume?

I live in an area that is extremely economically depressed. About 10 years ago, I left my traditional career track to start a business. The business was not related to my career track. The business worked fairly well and is now mature enough for me to turn it over to my spouse to run (I'm not interested in running it). I would now like to return to my own career. I have worked contract on and off (as the business permitted) over the last 10 years. My assignments have ranged from very short term to almost 2 years in length. The type of jobs are also all over the map, from simple retail to complex engineering positions. I have an advanced degree, but as I said, I have done rather menial work. I enjoy working, and do not feel too good for any job. I also understand that I may have to take a lesser job than what I previously had (due to economy and absence from the work force). In other words, I've rather fallen between the cracks. Does anyone have any professional advice on how to jump start my career? more

Open Question: I need a DVD supplier. HELP PLEASE!!?

I am trying to start an at home DVD sales business and I have yet to find a supplier. I ordered from wholesaledisc.com and had to return everything because it was all crap from the 30s and 40s even though it was advertised as retailing for 9.99-24.99. I am down $258 and still don't have any inventory. Can anyone help me find a good DVD wholesale supplier. Not just google search results. more

Open Question: World Wide Brands and starting my business?

Hi everyone, Does anybody in Canada have any experience with World Wide Brands...I know they're a very reputable company and the wholesalers they provide are all good and trustworthy. However I am concerned about being nailed with customs charges which would eliminate most of my profit margins if I had to pay that. Also, if I am registering as a sole proprietor what category would I be registering under "41" for Wholesale Trade or "44-45" for Retail trade? Any help would be greatly appreciated. more

Open Question: College graduate who has been living with parents since October-Should I just pack my bags and move to a city?

I graduated college almost a year ago now (Spring 2009), and I haven't had any luck landing jobs in my field. I moved back home with my parents in October and have been holding 2 jobs in retail ever since. My hometown is extremely rural and doesn't have a lot of international business opportunities (which is what I studied). I'm going crazy.. there is nothing to do here, and I feel like I'm just wasting time that I should be networking. My parents won't let me move out until I have a full-time job offer, but I am considering up and moving somewhere. I feel like if I was in a city it would help my job prospects instead of applying in a small town hundreds of miles away. If I moved somewhere, I could at least work in customer service until that full-time job opportunity comes up. I feel like it's just a waste being here at 22, when I should be out starting a life of my own. I know I am not going to get a job just sitting here. I have been accepted into a few graduate programs out of state beginning in the fall, which my parents see as a waste of time, but I know it will open a lot of doors. What should I do? Should I just pick a place and move there?? Still apply for jobs through my computer in a hick town while working in retail? Go to grad school and take out loans? Ugh it is so frustrating, and I am getting tired of living with my parents and being in the middle of nowhere. more

Open Question: What should i do !?!?

Ok, first off I’ve just turned 17 and currently study NDI Media at college. My GCSE results were not that fantastic e.g. (C & B in English, B in Business Studies, B in Re, E in Maths, E in Science, C in Geog and C in ICT I started 6th Form in September, but after 3 months, i left, this was partly to do with the attitude the teachers had and i felt i could not focus and did not want to waste two years of my life and get rubbish A level results. I then started College to study NDI media, but, yet again i am regretting that decision, as i am sitting in front of a computer screen all day and finding it hard to focus on the same thing day in day out...i like to keep busy and do a variety of things, and i am not doing that on this course (i'd like to point out at this point, i have done very well on this course so far, distinctions for every assignment :) ) However, i have a part time job in the retail industry and feel i would benefit more from going full time instead of staying on this course. I want to be a police officer and feel the extra experience with the public would look good when i apply and give me more experience. What should I do, as I can’t even apply for the police until I’m 18. Would the extra experience look good or would distinctions in something nothing to do with police help?? :( more

Resolved Question: Another business using the business name I chose. Please help?

A year ago I'd thought of a business name and googled it, it was not in use, it was only the name of a song by some band I never heard of. Unfotunately, just a few days ago when I'd decided to purchase the business name and become licensed I did not google the name again. I bought the name and I'm waiting for my license to arrive in the mail. I googled the name AFTER I purchsed license and see that the name is in use by a new company!! This new company is an internet consultant company based in Australia. My company will be for retail of doll related items through a website. Can I start a website and use this business name if I am not in competition with this other company by the same name or can they sue me the moment I start publicly using the same name? Resolved Question: Corporation Tax question - What are profits?

I'm considering starting an antiques retail business, under a ltd company, and am working out a long-term business plan and monthly cash-flow forecast. I intend to withdraw as little money as possible from the company so I can re-invest it in more, and better, stock. So, if it makes say, £50,000 profit after all costs in a year but I re-invest all of that money back into more stock, will I have to pay Corporation Tax on all of that profit? Or, do I only have to pay Corporation Tax on any money left over or withdrawn after I've bought the new stock? In other words, how are Profits defined when it comes to Corp. Tax? Resolved Question: How can I support myself?

Alright I live in Colorado. I have lived with my mom for the past year but she is moving to Israel and I need to stay finish college here. We own a house and a car. Our house costs $1500 dollars a month will bills. The car costs another $300 with gas and insurance each month. So in order to continue living in it I need $1800 a month indefinitely. Here is the problem. I just turned 19, and am a sophomore in college. I currently have $8000 dollars in student debt that is building interest because im not making payments on it. The job market here is scarce. For someone my of my age the best I can hope for is a minimum wage job working in like Radio Shack or Best Buy or some other retail store. Although I have applied several times I have had no luck getting a job. On campus jobs only provide an average of 15 hours a week at minimum wage ($7.25 hourly) I would have the ability to share my house with 1 roommate. I want to start cultivating medical marijuana legally to sell to dispensaries to supplement my income. I have had older friends that have done this and made a substantial amount of money. I also have some experience cultivating. The problem is my mom wont let me start until she moves out, which will be in June. So, I would have to figure out a way to support myself from June until about January. By this time I should be making enough from the marijuana that I would not have to work anymore. But... Until then, what do I do? Me and a friend had an idea to start a business repairing computers since we are both very knowledgeable in the subject. The customers would call us, make an appointment, and we come fix their problem. We have built a working website and marketing material all we need to do is hammer out the kinks and publish the website. Hopefully this will bring in some revenue, but most likely I will not get much of a return for awhile until it takes off. Ok guys so... How do I make $1800 bucks a month? I am pretty intelligent. The only skills I really have are with computers and electronics, and I play guitar im pretty good but not good enough to make money yet. more

Voting Question: Why can't I find an entry-level job in my field?

I need help. I graduated from college last year, first I completed a Bachelor's Degree in Music Business/Management in 2007, and then I completed a Graduate Certificate in Public Relations/Communications, from which I graduated last year. I'm not sure if its the economy/recession or not, but I can't seem to find a job somewhat related to my field. All of the jobs that ARE in my field require at least 2-3 years of experience in the field. I've done a few internships for free in the past to gain experience, but I can't afford to work for free anymore. I'm currently working 2 part-time jobs in retail, and the only jobs that I seem to get interviews for are customer service and retail jobs. How am I ever supposed to get a job in Marketing/Communications/PR if I can't gain that entry-level experience? I wonder if I should try an employment agency? I'm even open to Administrative Office Work, anything to get my foot in the door. I'm almost 26 years old and I just want a chance to start my career. Help! more

I'm starting a small business in Portland, Oregon and I need to find out some market research information about my proposed location. I've had very little luck on the internet and I have found limited resources. We own a small business and sell clothes, shoes, blankets, perfumes, so on and since we started everything has just kind of been kept in boxes and stacked and not really organized recently we finished construction of a room addition to our home so we can sell out of there instead of the livingroom. we also feel we should organize more. so where do you get those shoe racks that stores like payless and wal mart have? not small 4 platform ones for closets, but the big ones in retail. Where do you get retail shelves for clothing and racks for hanging clothes? I don't care about the price, company that sells it, wether we have to assemble it or it's sent like that, or shipping costs. New is preferred but used is fine All help is much appreciated more

Voting Question: Would you call it "Artisan Handbag" if an artisan handworks embelishments on the surface of factory-made bags?

I am starting handbag manufacturing and retail business in the future. I am debating whether I should handle entire manufacturing process in-house or I should outsource manufacturing of plain handbags to be embelished by hand in-house. I got this idea after seeing some artisans who hand paint on finished silk skarves, or canvas tote bags, glue gun rime stomes on finished T-shirts, etc. I am talking about the similar concept. In your opinion, would you call it artisan handbag? (the bag appears unique, and finishing touch was done by hand.) more

Resolved Question: If you are about to buy a handbag made with Pre-WWII vintage Japanese kimono fabric, does it have to be silk?

I am starting handbag manufacturing & retailing business in the future. I am currently working on a handbag collection that is made with pre-WWII vintage Japanese kimono obi sash fabric from 1910's thru 1930's. I have found many beautiful vintage kimono fabrics, but they tend to be rayon and silk & synthetic blend. Silk ones are sort of dull unless they are very expensive. This is because Japan was #1 producer of rayon during that time in history. It does accurately portray historical aspect of the textile. However, I can already anticipate some sort of hang-ups by American customers because the bags are not made with vintage silk material. To what degree does it matter whether your handbag is made of silk or rayon/synthetic. Does the Pre-WWII vintage outweigh rayon textile, or silk is a must? Also if you can tell me your gender & age, that will help. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Has anyone heard or gone to one of Rick Brown's and Steve Clements seminar called Bank Foreclosure Direct?

They sell a course on accessing Wholesale Foreclosures, claiming to provide legitimate investors name addresses and phones, who have allot of money, that course takers will have access to contact, in addition to websites they have and would provide to sort, and determine which properties would be worthy, put together proposals, never use your own money, present them to the investors, they provide all the legal forms, tell you what to say, teach you how to talk to banks and who to get to in order to find these "wholesale foreclosures as opposed to "retail foreclosures" .. wholesale meaning properties even realtors don't and won't see ever.. wholesale meaning properties banks sell in bundles to investors..and "for sale" signs that never even go up on these homes/commercial, properties, that they want $1500 to teach you how to do and of course unlimited staff/mentors to help you. Rick Brown even shows a video of Donald Trump commending him, claims to know him and says he's the "real deal". He also says there in a tremendous wave of foreclosures being released a little at a time to the public but they are retail.. and forget going to courthouse step public auctions because you would be outbid by the pro's and outcast by paying to much because they want you out of their way. It is an insider tight knit group at the auction, which actually I have heard before and believe is true. These are middle men going with hard money cash for investors. I am considering paying and attending this course for 3 days and using my savings.. He also offers a full course on tax lien sales and how to make money paying someone elses delinquent taxes and you make money on the interest, how to pick the properties with a special website, and if the owners defualt and never pay you own the home. I have also heard of this and bought John Becks course years ago but he shows you nothing start to finish which Steve Clements course claims to give you everthing step by step. Who are these people? There were a total of 30 people maybe that came to the seminar - 15 signed up and paid for the upcoming course(s). It was not one of those huge 200 people seminars. I want to make sure they will give you all we need to really succeed, and I know there is no real way to know for sure - but does anyone out there know anything about people now talking about accessing wholesale forclosures as opposed to the MLS retail foreclosures? In addition their website is bankforeclosuredirect.com & dogreat.com. They did offer a discount for the course "who doesn't" but you know when you have been burned.. and some of these people want mroe and more money after to continue to learn, yet you never get help and see the money they claim and that you will receive EVERYTHING you need to know, have, and they claim to show you and walk you through everything. It is very tempting, and I don't want to regret not learning what may be a worthy host and teachers. I detected some arrogance and urgency.. as usual from the host and teacher Rick Brown. I don't like it when they have folks come up to ask them questions on a very short intermission, becauser maybe the questions others have everyone has and we need to hear the question and answer. They also talk about the other 50% of foreclosures that are "hidden" by the banks because they don't want the public to know, and realtors don't even have access. Are these gentlement for real? My husband happened to also see an info-merical from a different person offering a webinar on this very sale wholesale forclosures. Please can anyone shed some light on these teachers or their known reputation. I found absolutely nothing cross referencing them and their business on the net, much less anything at all on wholesale foreclosures. I am almost inclined to believe they are on the up and up and would hate to miss out on their course. We need the money. Jobs are not secure at all, and most are luccky to even have one. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: For a business administration major, would you recommend a retail, tech, or health care internship?

I am planning to go back to school and major in business administration. I want to start looking out for internship opportunities to boost my resume. I know health care was a safe choice, but now we may change the way we do insurance as a country. I am interested in retail and technology, but want something stable after I graduate. I would like to stay away from the entertainment business, if at all possible. Thank you guys! more

Voting Question: My chance to turn small Business into Big!?

ok, I'll try to explain in short words: My family comes from Brazil My dad has a small business for over25 years. Business: Rent and sell snooker tables, ping pongs and football(soccer) tables My dad got started really young, in 1983. By that time, his business was much better, he used to have lots of revenues sources. The main revenue source came from Bars! if you had over 50 snooker tables, it was already something. Now the business is about to fail. The bars are doind badly. But theres a new hope: Retail and personal clients. We dont have many competitors, Only average ones. Nothing special. My dad has no skills to deal with the business anymore. I'm 22, studying business and administration. I work as a broker. I thought about taking the business from my dad for 70k, and he would have the right for future cash incoming. I thought about a business plan, investing 50k in an office rent, sellers, software and a small inventory. I thought about getting a partnership to help. we would add more to our services and products. Events, eletronic games, 1 day rent tables, poker boards, cigars, everything related to playing! Question: am I dreaming too high??? more

Voting Question: How much time notice to give employer when offered a new job?

I currently have a part-time job for a local retail business. After the Christmas/New Year rush, sales have slowed down and with me being the part-time worker and low on the totem pole, my hours are usually cut first. I graduated from college with a BS degree last May, but have had HORRIBLE luck in finding full time employment....until now! I had an interview today for an Assistant Office Manager position in a growing physicians office and things went very well. Ended with a tour of the facility, discussed salary/benefits and was introduced to the physicians of the practice. My interviewer (the manager) was asking about when I would be able to start too. I am supposed to get final word by Friday! *fingers crossed* So my question is: If I am offered the position, how much notice is fair for the part-time job? I am planning letting them know ASAP when I am notified. I thought two weeks, but I have also been told that one week is sufficient since it is part-time and the hours are so iffy (and stinky). What do you think I should do if I am offered the position? TIA!I understand two weeks is best. My question is: since I am not full time with extensive cut hours, is two weeks still the way to go? I only work 4 days in the next two weeks. (they may be cut too)The employee manual says two weeks, but that employer may make the last day the day of resigning. humph... more

Resolved Question: Opinions needed for family and new location. Colorado or Washington?

My family and I have gone through alot. Losing everything from our buiz to a haste decision and moved everyone to Arizona. And the small town we live in has been going down itself. I cant afford to do this to my kids. We need to make sure this next move is the one that we can relax and let my kids finish growing. At this time, in the research and questions I have asked others. Im thinking about Spokane Washington, or Colorado Springs Colorado. I made my mind on WA just for the piece of mind of wages starting at $8.55 and then CO was mainley because it would be like $700 cheaper on the move. And I think I passed by a newspaper somewhere online that said they had the 4th best econimey. But dont quote me on that. Any Ideas would be a life time HELP. We have 4 girls. 19 months, 10, 11, and 16 year old. Over my growing years I have never forgotten the kindness of the people in Kansas, but I dont recall there being alot of jobs in Waterville KS. What im looking for is somewhere I may grow my mobile service business again, my wife can find a decent retail or CNA hospital job or pharmacy. And my children can have a chance to grow in a town they can have a chance to grow with. Like work, people, and just the basics that everyone should strive for and that the bible teaches people. No matter what. I am going to make sure my children can grow and plant there roots. Any ideas or info one either one or evin other places would be a lot of help. My wife and I are both x business owners, before that she had always done retail work. And I have dont grunt work. From greenhorn AC installing (HVAC), laying carpet, and being a father of 4 honorole students, there is not a job on this planet that I cant do. When we first moved to Bullhead City AZ, I evin sold myself to a Chef and gave a shot as a line cook in Laughlin NV. A New Respect for cooks since that time. hehehe more

Resolved Question: College graduate looking for a part-time job?

Please help! I graduated a few years ago with a degree in communications and started by own business. It has done okay, but especially with this economy, it is not turning out to be profitable enough. I would love a part-time job (about 15 hrs. a week) to supplement my income, but have no idea where to go. I have gone the childcare route, and really want a job that actually requires a degree if possible...something I am proud to be doing. No retail, no office work, no childcare. My experience is in sales and customer service for the most part. If anyone has any ideas about where to look besides the usual sites or what steps to take, I would be extremely appreciative. And I do not want to do full commission sales, because that's what's gotten me to this point. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Should I take an entry level job at an advertising firm or pursue a master's in college student affairs?

I graduated from college in May 2009 with a bachelor's degree in business marketing with a minor in international relations. While in college I was in a sorority and had the opportunity to work in the admissions office. I was involved in a lot of student activities, studied abroad, and did a few internships. I haven't had any luck landing jobs in my field. I moved back in with my parents and have been working in retail until something comes up. I was recently accepted into graduate school for a master's degree in college student affairs, but I also interviewed for a full-time entry level job at a global advertising firm. I am very unsure of what direction to take, and just wanted to get some input about each direction. I definately enjoyed the college experience, and I think it would be neat to work at a college, but it is all I've known. I like learning, and the college environment. Part of me thinks that I might just be attracted to it because it's all I've known. However advertising/marketing is what I went to school for, but since I haven't worked in it, I'm not sure direction I can take with it. There's a lot that I want to do in my life, but I'm not sure what my end goal is. I feel like I'll figure out what my "dream" is as I go, but I need to start somewhere. I'm also unsure if it would be unwise to turn down a full-time to pursue grad school. I know I'd like to get a master's degree someday for sure and work on the international level but just not sure what direction. Suggestions? more
