"I don't have a Web site or a fax machine. I want people to call me on the telephone with their bread orders. You have to talk to your baker. I need to know my customers," Conroy said.
Conroy runs a genuine, European-style bakery called The Daily Bread Bakeshop on Route 390 in Mountainhome. "I've never been to France," he said. "But this business is what I imagine a French bakery would be like. We don't sell bagels, doughnuts or cannolis. Sometimes, people have an idea of what a bakery is supposed to be, and that's not what we are." Conroy opened the bakeshop in 2003, but he had his eye on the building for decades. "My parents moved our family to Mountainhome from Long Island in the 1970s.
