Price of business the issue when China comes shopping

CHINA has a stupendous $US1800 billion ($1880 billion) in foreign reserves, a big chunk of it parked in US Treasury bonds that have lost their relative value dramatically because of the steady rise of the Chinese yuan against the US dollar.

Understandably, the Chinese have been looking at alternatives, one of which is investing in the producers of the raw materials their economy needs or in direct start-ups to open new supplies of these materials.

This is producing a rapid qualitative change in China's economic ties with Australia. As well as rapidly eclipsing Japan to become our biggest trading partner, China is now becoming a significant investor. Two years ago, cumulative Chinese investment in Australia totalled $3.5 million. Last year, investment applications from China hit $10 billion, and they may reach $30 billion this year. more

Nalco evaluating paper services business

"The paper services part of our business likely needs some consolidation," Bushman said. "It's really tied to what's going on in the paper industry in North America and Europe... the paper makers, which are our customers, have been swapping and consolidating their assets, and production levels have not been going in the right direction [in these regions]" for the paper chemicals and services suppliers.

Nalco's newly-appointed CEO, J Erik Fyrwald, has experience in restructuring initiatives and could make a decision to either sell, spin off, merge, or swap Nalco's paper services assets with those of another company by the end of 2008, Bushman said. "Within the year, we'd like to have an idea of what role, if any, Nalco will play" in the paper chemical supplier market's necessary consolidation, the VP said. more

Soggy summer has businesses rolling out the rain barrels

They're in the rain barrel business, and sales have been booming, in part because of the record rainfall in June.

Staufenbeil manages the barrel program for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, which has sold nearly 3,000 55-gallon drums this year, a record number that pushes the total to nearly 10,000 since 2002.

Wilson is the executive director of Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful Inc. Barely keeping pace with the demand, Wilson calculates sales will easily exceed the 1,100 sold in 2006 and 2007.

"As fast as we can turn them out, they're going out the door for us," Wilson said.

Both MMSD and the nonprofit organization based at 1313 W. Mount Vernon Ave. in the Menomonee Valley have been able to meet the rain barrel demand, unlike their neighbors to the south. more

As a result AWI has taken the business decision to transfer functions to India and Sydney resulting in a significant cost saving, and to transfer the Portugese operation to Spain.

According to the Chief Executive of AWI Craig Welsh the decision is good business and continues the evolution of AWI into a world class operation.

“Our decision to relocate the Interior Textiles operation to India will effectively bring this function closer to where the carpet is manufactured," he said.

“This is about working smarter to give wool growers maximum value for their investment by reducing overheads.

“Restructuring to date has eliminated Woolmark inefficiencies and saved woolgrowers in the order of $5 million per year.

Starting A Handyman Business Questions asked

Resolved Question: I want to be a house flipper... But how?

My dream in life is to be able to restore or 'flip' historic houses and re-sell them, doing as much of the work I possibly can, myself. I have spoken to a few different people, and they suggest to A) Get a Real Estate license, B) Get a Business License and C) Get a contractors license. For me, I'm not in it for the money... I want to do this because I really really love old houses and it breaks my heart to see one in shambles. I have wanted to do this for a while, but I really don't know where to start. I want to know why I should get a business license, and even a real estate license. Not that I don't think I should--But just to help me understand a bit better how they can help me. Also, I have been asking around and reading, and it seems to get a contractor's license you have to already be into construction. This is something I want to do also. I want to learn EVERYTHING I can about how to fix up an old house. From codes, to repairing a bad foundation, electrical, roofing, and everything in between! I come from a long line of electricians, and handymen, but most of these people are either dead, across the country, or very very busy. Is there a school or course I can take where I can get hands on experience and learn everything? Also, would this school/course help me get a contractors license? This may seem unimportant, but I also read that when you get a contractors license it's usually only for the state you are applying in. The thing is, my ultimate dream is to restore historic homes all over the Southern US. I know I should just cross this bridge when I get to it... But do you have to apply for a new License every time? I probably haven't even asked enough questions about this. But any advice or feedback is very appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this! I want to do this the right way. I want to be prepared, organized, and very knowledgeable about everything I want to do before I start. Also, please don't discourage me because I'm a girl... This is another reason I want to flip houses is also because I can work alone (How I work my best, anyway) and don't have to worry about being turned down by other employers because I AM a girl! :) Thanks... -VM-Thank you all for your answers so far! I am glad that everyone seems to be supportive so far. ... Everyone except my family! I haven't told my parents yet, but my boyfriend says that in order to really get hands-on experience I have to work for a contractor or construction company, and he said that I probably would never be hired because I am a girl, and I have little experience... I am not sure how to get experience if I have to have experience to get it! But I am going to talk to my dad (who does have a lot of experience) and see if I can get a second opinion. more

Voting Question: New construction handyman business, Need filing and organization help?

So I started a little handyman business. I got my general contractor's license, insurance and bond and am getting a fair amount of work. I like it but don't like having to sit down at the computer for too long of a time doing paperwork. I've got a makeshift filing system, all paper with folders, cabinet etc. I use MS Office Pro programs like Outlook for email/calendar etc and Word for all documents for bids, invoices, letterheads etc. I'm looking for the best and most efficient ways of dealing with all the administrative duties associated with running a small construction business. I wanna use technology as much as I can to help me keep track of receipts, invoices, job leads, etc. I know I need Quick Books or a program similar but not sure how much that program alone will help me when keeping track of everything. Should I keep a handwritten ledger of all transactions (fuel, materials, tools, withdrawals etc) or is there a program I can use to do that? Any help is much appreciated. I'd like to hear from people who have or currently is running a business but input from anyone is appreciated. Links to .doc templates, or reference sites welcomed. more

Hi, I worked as Handyman for 5 years. Now I am starting a new business that will edit and publish a monthly magazine. Resolved Question: Please give me your interpretation of my dream:?

I was in a place where I was with a younger female & she said look is that gasoline. I looked and saw a large roof of a house & it had gasoline pouring on the roof & the one next to it did too...so I panicked to get someone to do something but I noticed it was coming from another house roof behind those & that one was mine. (In real life my husband has a handyman business & I get very upset with him cause the van he carries things in is such a mess. He at times carries gasoline to start a peice of equipment & I have smelled gas & seen bottles of things spill) Then in the dream. I saw a chipmunk inside the place where I was & I knew I better catch it before it did damage. So I grabbed a large plastic clear box with a blue lid & worked at getting it in there so I could take it away from our house...so I was in a house yet I could see my house from a distant. (In real life I only have one house) I was terrified the chipmonk would bite me & have rabbies but he nipped at me & I knew I had to do what I had to do. So I proceeded. Meanwhile, the men which I guess consisted of my husband & son were in another room playing cards or doing something not caring about my problems. (In real life my son wouldn't sit around playing cards he is busy doing constructive things but my husband would) So I took the chipmonk across the street looking for a nice area to let him out of the box. Yet, I was afraid he was going to attack me once I let him out. I also made sure I didn't do it on my property cause I didn't want him coming back. (In real life I do live across the street from a school) so I thought it would be nice over there & let him out. When I woke up I felt a bit angry that I had all this threatening problems to handle alone. more

Resolved Question: Are there any good videos or books that teach people how to solve math problems?

I am a 50 year old who never paid attention in school & still has a hard time paying attention. I find that I avoid things in life when I can't figure out the answer.....I find when I can figure something out & explain it with math everyone feels more secure about why I am telling them what I am telling them....for example. I have people who complain about politics. The look at negative things such as their tax going up but don't see how because of changes they are actually able to make more money....My husband was supposed to do something & forgot so a friend we work with would have to work longer. It all worked out but my husband decided that if we had to work 1/2 longer he would deduct 1/2 hour from his pay & give it to the friend to compensate him for spending extra time there at no fault of his own...Ok, so I love math but I hate it. I think if I understand how to use it I would not hate it....I am not a natural with it though. I am a people person so if I can understand it with people involved I will be able to learn how to use it. I have a handyman business with my husband & we don't even quote jobs. I do want to start quoting deck painting prices. How can I learn how to use it in life situations yet I think I need to stay with basics for a while. I don't even know what question to ask cause I have such a hard time understanding this. Thank you! more

Voting Question: Is it unwise to become an engineer now-a-days because of outsourcing?

Instead here's an alternative scenario for the American worker. Start your own business. Then your job cannot be outsourced. Why leave your fate up to corporations who have no loyalty to workers but will seek the cheapest labor wherever they can find it in the world? Become a capitalist yourself! Train yourself for a line of work over which you have complete control, and a line of work that can't be outsourced. Examples: medicine, law, plumbing, electrician, handyman, barber and beauty shops, franchises such as Starbucks, real estate. Whatever you do, don't go into high tech, cutting edge fields. These are the primary candidates for outsourcing. Take the money you would have spent on college and instead invest it in real estate. Your goal should be not to just be a worker living from paycheck to paycheck with the American dream of a mortgage and a couple of cars. Your goal should be to increase your net assets, your net worth, to the point that you can live off of a return from capital and not just the sweat of your brow. This is what they don't teach you in school where they teach the new American Dream which Friedman totally endorses which is to get better educated, work harder and run faster in the rat race. A moderately successful business man (and I include handymen, gardeners and plumbers in this category) doesn't have to do this. More importantly, a moderately successful businessman does not have to beg a corporation for a job. http://willblogforfood.typepad.com/will_blog_for_food/education_careers_jobs_employment/ more

Resolved Question: At work I usually mind my own business and don't get involved in all the religious crap that goes on here?

but today our maintenance man said the wrong thing and I jumped in on it. We were discussing someones delinquent account and my boss asked the handyman if this guy still goes to his church. The handyman said yes and he even joined the church. The handyman was against it because he is living with a girl. I came unglued and asked when did his personal life become any business of the the church and if he is "living in sin" shouldn't church be exactly the place he needs to be? He said he doesn't go for that and it shouldn't be tolerated in the church. I said so he wants to go to church and you will deny him because he doesn't meet your hypocritical, bigoted standards. That's judgmental and not very christian. He said it was like yeast in leavened bread, once it gets started it spreads. I told him if he feels that way maybe he should minister to him instead of voting him out. That will run him off in a hurry. How bad would it be if the guy was gay and living with his boyfriend? <---QuestionFireball, It wasn't my bossit wasn't my boss, it was the handyman!!!!!!! more

Resolved Question: I'm 21 years old - please help?

I’m a 21 years old and I’m gay. A few months back I made a personal listing on Outpersonals.com to hook up with someone for a discreet relationship. Well, recently I’ve been hanging around this one other dude who is also 21 years old who’s basically looking for the same thing as me. I like him a lot and we been getting along just fine. Anyways, before I met him, I was communicating back and forth (via phone & email) with this man who’s 50 years old. He’s self employed and has been for 33 years. I am also self-employed. Thus, it has lead to some very lengthy and interesting phone conversations. We have found a lot of interesting business topics to discuss. Maybe a couple months in after all of our talking, he wanted to put up a website for both of his businesses. His first business is an appliances business (handyman service). As for his second business, he provides DJ services. He doesn’t have the experience to do both websites himself so I told him that I would design & develop him a small 5 to 10 page informational site for both of his businesses. I did not charge him anything for doing it. All he paid for were the hosting fees through the web hosting company. I did web design for him myself. Anyways, I completed his first website for his appliance business and he loved it. I am about to start the second website for his DJ service, but that has been sitting on the back burner for a few weeks now. The reason for this is because there is a list of about 13 thousand songs that he needs to extract from one of his computer programs. He wants to make a list of all the songs to put on his site. He does not know how to extract the names of the songs from his software, so he wants me to come over and try to do it for him. I told him I am not familiar with his DJ software. I told him I could probably figure it out if I sat in front of it long enough but I told him he should just call the manufacturer and have them walk him through it. He said they won’t help him do it. But then I checked the manufacturer’s website and they charge a support fee (I think it’s like $50) for them to walk him through what needs to be done. I told him he should pay the support fee and get assistance with it (because I really don’t want to play around with something that I don’t know how to use). Despite my knowledge with computers and web design, does not mean I know how to work every single piece of software out there. But I am quick learner so I could probably figure it out for him, but the liability still remains in my court should I mess something up for him. That’s why I am encouraging him to contact the manufacturer. I suggested that to him at least a few times now. When I initially suggested that to him, he told me he would just drive out to the seminar that the manufacturer is having and he will ask for help there and then once they show him how to extract the list of songs, he will email me the songs to list on his website. He did not attend the seminar because he got sick. Anyways!!!! Just a few days ago he has invited me once again to come over to his place to do it for him. I told him, it would be nice to meet up with you at some point, but I don’t know if I really am all that comfortable considering our age difference and that the fact that we are both gay and met through a gay dating site. I told him I would be happy to set up a remote session with him so I can access his computer from my computer without having to physically meet him in person to do this. He doesn’t want to go that route because it will cost him X amount of dollars to connect his wireless internet to that computer. I don’t think it would cost much, but he claims AT&T said it would cost so much a minute. Anyways… I have a feeling he wants me to come there so he can just check me out. I told him, I respect the fact that you been in business for 33 years… it seems like you have good stuff going for you. I explained to him I only been in business for 6 years (I’ve started when I was 14 years old.). I told him you seem like a nice enough person, thus I will be happy to help you, because it won’t take much of my time anyways. I told him give me the weekend to think about whether or not I feel comfortable coming out there and he said ok to that. Should I go out there and meet him? I have a feeling he just wants to check me out. I’m not sexually interested in him. I even told him that long ago. I told him we can be friends but that’s it, and he said that would be fine. I told him at some point I may not mind to meet you in person, but right now still seems kind of early (it’s been a few months). Plus, I recently met a guy (who’s 21 years old) and I been hanging with him a lot anyways. My profile specifically stated I’m not looking for any older guys. The reason why I kept communicating back and forth with him was because we seemed to make some interesting conversations and he seemed nice enoug more

Resolved Question: Can you please give your views on this logo design?

Hi all! I am re-branding my friends business and he wanted a new logo to start off with. His business is a builder/handyman company. What do you think of my attempt? Are there any aspects that need improving from design, structure, colour palette, etc? The logo itself will not be used on vans etc but business cards and their website. I'd love your view, whether you're a graphic designer or not! http://g.imagehost.org/0749/duobuilder2.jpg AND IN BLACK AND WHITE: http://g.imagehost.org/0491/b_w_duobuilders.jpg Thanks a lot in advance!I don't understand your point about animation, 'second one down poster' could you please explain? more

Resolved Question: My husband does handyman work & I do organizing, how can we structure our business to make enough money?

We are not very educated but good at what we do. We need a lot of money per month. We had hospital bills that put us in debt then we borrowed money to pay out bills. Our son passed away so we have had some hard years. Now we want to start fresh & pay things off. So we have to structure what we do. We both need to make $2000 a month each. We get so scattered so are there any simple clear ways to go about doing this....we can get enough customers word of mouth which is what we prefer. We like knowing who we work for b/c we have had some people not pay us....so we are not worried about getting customers....actually with my organizing business I do have to reach out to new customers but I am looking for people who have clutter & large houses would be nice but that doesn't matter. Where do I begin to get this mess organized? more

Voting Question: Starting a business in Florida ?

My husband is starting his own handyman business and ready to file for a business license. He is thinking about making it an LLC rather than a corporation. The question is... if he starts the business as a handyman service, (example: LENCO, LLC) can he decide to expand his horizons to other types of businesses under the same business license? Or will he be limited to one type of business only? more
