Sending out an SOS to the world

This week I received an email from a small business sending out an SOS. They are in a cash crunch - and they went straight to their customers to help them out. Offering an SOS sale, the business owners were frank and honest about the reasons why.

Their email stated:

"Dear Customer,

This is an SOS to ALL Customers ... and a very important email.

We haven't had to put in a CALL TO ACTION like this for over 3 years (the last time was in April 2005); but the fact of the matter is ... we're experiencing a bit of a mid-year cash crunch, and we need your HELP (again) in order keep the REMO machine moving forward ... surviving & thriving. The founder explains why in Q&A format below; but, in summary, what we're asking you to do is this: put in a BIG order (preferably a VERY BIG order) as soon as you can, even if you feel that you might be stockpiling merchandise and gifts for use later in the year; and include as many T Shirts as possible in that order (we're well stocked). more

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Trio of veterans lifts Skowhegan to top of KVAC

In last Friday's 4-0 loss at Messalonskee, which snapped Skowhegan's 11-game win streak, Calder made one of the best defensive plays of the season. Only it didn't count.

Calder sprinted to the wall to track down Matt Stuart's shot to dead center and laid himself out to make the catch. Calder's momentum carried him over the collapsible fence at Messalonskee, but umpires ruled he didn't have control of the ball in play, awarding Stuart the home run.

"I've caught a lot of good balls," Calder said.

Wheaton and Calder are the catalysts for the Indians. Wheaton hits leadoff, and he's scored 13 runs and stolen five bases while hitting .424. While Calder's average is just .244, the center fielder has helped keep Skowhegan's offense moving out of the two hole in the lineup. Last week, Calder had a sacrifice bunt at Messalonskee, and a two-run single against Lawrence started a four-run inning. more

Live from New York . . . It’s the World Science Festival!

I wrote the introductory essay and came up with about two dozen answers ranging alphabetically from advertising and art to restaurants and theater. It never occurred to me to put science on the list.

But now that I see the sterling roster of speakers and events at this week's festival, I'm reconsidering. There's plenty of science getting done here — it just gets overshadowed by everything else. We tend to think of Boston, or Washington, DC., or the Bay Area as science hubs because the researchers and their institutions make up a bigger part of the cities' economies and cultures. In New York scientists have to compete for attention — not to mention real estate, whose high cost has driven some researchers away. But if they can afford to live here, scientists benefit from being so close to so many other smart people, as you can see from the makeup of the festival. more

Quest to make it into Team GB: the girl gunning for gold

Five months after her jaunt in Athens, having decided to pursue her sport rather than follow up on the degree in physiotherapy she had earned that summer from Brunel University, Fell accepted the invitation to join Britain's modern pentathlon performance director, Jan Bartu, at Bath.

It was January 2005. Fell was set to rise and rise. It did not happen. "I had a slight problem with my shins before I went, more of a niggling pain, but once I started full-time training my legs just couldn't take it," she recalled. For the next 16 months her career stood still. "I wasn't competing, so I couldn't keep up my funding," she said. "The coaches said to me I would have to consider my options, and it felt to me like I was kicked out." It was May 2006. She was back home in Tavistock – and very upset. more

Resolved Question: Do I have to charge/pay sales tax for my service business?

The state I live in has state and county sales tax rates. My question is if I am going to start my own mobile spray tan business (just a sole proprietorship) do I have to charge sales tax for my services? I am not sure only because I know numerous people who offer mobile services (cleaning houses and dog grooming) who do not have a place of business and just pay self employment tax at the end of the year and they do not charge sales tax. thanksfor the guy who loves to quote "know numerous people" ...i know that...i never implied that if people do something then it must be legal...i was just wondering if people knew about tanning services specifically...I know that you ARE NOT REQUIRED to pay sales taxes on residential cleaning services...i did not assume that..i looked it up...but i couldnt find anythign about tanning services (because that is a rare business). more

Resolved Question: What career path should I take? I have a passion for golf, cell phones, and animals.?

I played college golf and have worked a couple golf jobs. The only problem is the pay is lousy. I would have to go back to school to be a club pro to make at max $50,000 yr. Also, I would like to work at a cell phone company and run my own store one day. I'm addicted to all the new gadgets out on the market. Last I love my two dogs and since money has been tight, I started grooming my own Shih Tzus. I really enjoy it and thought of going to grooming school and starting a mobile grooming business one day. So would you choose golf, phones, or dogs??? more

Resolved Question: Self-employed business of dog grooming. Rented space and business deal went sour. Now there is a lawsuit?

I started a dog grooming business and was renting space inside a already setup shop. I obtained my federal certificate, state sale tax certificate. I was told by an attorney, that since I did not have a store front, I did not need a business license. I am self-employed, not an actual business. I DID find a name for my "business", but it is not legal yet. I still need to register. DID I ACTUALLY NEED A LICENSE TO BE SELF-EMPLOYED?I'm sorry. My question is beside the fed, state certs, and my business insurance, I am self-employed, not a small business. Do I need a license to be self-employed? more

Resolved Question: Dog grooming certification?

I am going to start training with a friend who has a small grooming business that she runs out of her home. If and when I become confident enough, I am going to start up a similar business where I live, but going to client's homes to groom. I was wondering if after you are trained, if there is a way to actually get a certification? I know you can go to grooming schools, or get apprenticeships with certified groomers, but if you are trained otherwise, is there a test or something you can take to get your license so you can work in a real groomers? Or would you just apply at whatever groomers and they do their own evaluation to see if you're good enough? more

Resolved Question: Insurance for a business at home?

Hi, i am in UK and was going to start my Professional Pet Grooming business at home from my garage that i was going to convert. Now i am a bit stuck in my idea and would like to ask for a bit of help. If i were to run my grooming business from my garage, what companies do i search for for insurances and what types? Bearing in mind i would only have 1 dog at a time in my converted salon . Also, would i need a license or a permit or planning permission to do this at home? There would be no major changes to the outside of the garage apart from simple plumbing. its only the inside that needs changing. My property is privately rented and my landlady would consider this conversion but who would be responsible for the permit etc... more

Resolved Question: DOG: What to do in this situation?

I realize most of you are going to tell me to quit my job, but that is my LAST resort. I need my job. I have been working at a Dog Grooming shop since July. My breeding mentors are also the owners, and are teaching me everything they know. They are very kind, patient, wonderful women and know what they are doing. the problem is "Annie", the other hired groomer. I am currently listed as a "bather" and I work for $11 an hour, starting pay. I am learning under them to eventaully become another full-time groomer. Gale makes remarks to me about the owners, about what they do wrong, what doesnt work, etc, and Saturday she had the nerve to tell me that they "overpay me" because im learning and shouldn't be making any money for what Im doing! Whether or not that's true, it's not her place to tell me that! I am beginning to be left to work alone with Annie for a few weekdays a week- The head groomers are there in the morning and leave early afternoon, leaving me with her. They think she is "teaching me", which she is- But at the expense of listening her to her rant or complain. I can't handle it! I don't want to heaar about every little thing my bosses do that she doesn't like or "isn't like other grooming shops". they run a successful business and THEY are the owners, not her. Can i say anything to her, or them, without causing tension? Like i said, i can't just quit my job and go elsewhere- I need every penny I make out of that job.Annie* makes remarks. Whoops kay, guess giving her a fake name didn't work since i accidentally used her real name :DLOL well i've had things come up on here when i'm googled, and I'd hate to be googled again and this pop up :P more

Resolved Question: Opened my own business, renting space, legal question?

I opened a dog grooming business and I am renting the space from a woman who owns a pet shop in the front section of the building. She is charging me $375/mo. for rent. Now, she told me before I started, that I can set my own hours, prices, etc. She is now telling me that I can only be open the hours she is, which is 10-5 M-F, 10-1 on Sat. Saturdays I NEED to be open from 10-5, or 11-6. Can I do anything b/c she is denying me the hours I need to be productive? She is worried about someone being in the store when she is not there. She WILL NOT consider staying at the store for the hours I need to be there.I didn't get a lease, yet. I opened on the 28th of Sept. and I have only had 3 customers. I KNOW I need a lease and am going to talk with her about it this Sat. But, without a lease, under verbal agreement, do I have any recourse? Now this woman sent me an email tonight telling me to come get my stuff b/c I mentioned a lease with her and I was confused about her demands on my business hours. I am seeking legal advice, but not sure where I stand. Are emails admissable in court as proof of a contract? more

Resolved Question: What would you like from me?

I'm starting a dog grooming position, I book all of my appointments, charge what I want, etc., but I use my employers facilities. I'm going to start at 45% comission and the more clientelle I build I can earn up to 60%. Even if you don't have a dog, please answer. 1) What is a cheap unique way of advertising? (other than posting flyers) 2) If I were your dogs groomer, what would you want me to offer you (other than the given, like a well groomed dog or a competitive fee or great service fast) to keep your business? Frequent customer cards that allow you to earn discounted or free groomings? Customer with most monthly visits gets a doggie gift basket? A referral program? What is something (that isn't too expensive) I could give you that would keep you comming back? I'm looking for ideas that are unique and more than what one might expect! more

Voting Question: How to drum up business for myself?

I'm starting a dog grooming position at a pet shop. Its not in the town I live, I live about 15 mins from said grooming shop. The job is comission based, so the more pets I groom the more money I make. I will start at 45% and am able to work and earn up to 60%. How do I get people to bring their pet to me? What's a cheap, efficent way of advertising? Also, once I have business, what incentives can I offer to keep them comming? (the manager said no free grooming) I was thinking of a "frequent customer" card and after so many sessions offering the customer something for free (other than a grooming session) PS: no treats or hairbows or things like that.... Everyone does that, I'm looking for something unique! more

Resolved Question: Starting a dog grooming position...?

I got the job yesterday. I'm going to be the first groomer there and then once my book gets full he's going to hire another groomer. The job is based on comission, I get 45% of what each session is charged. The manager said that I can do anything within reason, except offer free grooming sessions, to get people to come for my business. I was thinking of offering frequent pet cards and getting a stamp each time and after so many stamps they could get something, but what? What kind of things, if you were my potential customer, would you want, other than a well groomed dog, me to offer you to keep you as a customer?Forgot to mention. I don't want to do treats as some dog owners, such as myself, are finnicky about what treats their dog gets. Also, how to tell people to bring their pet to me? Business cards? Flyers? What? more

Resolved Question: Dog won't leave mother cat alone?

My barn cat just had a litter of kittens. We also have a 150-160 pound Cane Corso mix that we utilize as a free roam guard dog. For the cats protection we built a nesting area out of a pen in the barn. The dog didn't 'appreciate' this and as soon as the cat went into labour he broke the gate off and moved her to the back of the barn. We resecured the cat and her now delivered litter back in the pen. But, now, whenever she leaves the pen to do her business he grabs her and starts cleaning her. Because of his duties we cannot keep the dog from the barn. Can he actually do any real harm with all this extra attention towards the cat? He used to just tolerate the cat and only started grooming her about two weeks before she delivered. The kittens cannot leave the pen but Momma cat can jump over the sides. more

Voting Question: stuck...should I find my dogs a new home or keep trying?

I have two adult dogs. My husband just deployed. I have 4 young kids under 4 and I didn't expect that things would be this hard. My youngest daughter just got diagnosed with possible cancer and I have to take her up to a university hospital next week to to further testing. I don't know whether it's from the stress of having my husband gone, my daughter being sick, and the everyday stress of having so many young kids or an actual ilness brought on by something else, but I was just admitted into the hospital twice for migraines, and I had that problem where you have swelling with fluid in your brain. My heart rate, oxygen level, and blood pressure all dropped dangerously low, but I ended up being ok a nd they sent me home. I am still having chronic migraines tho, and they don't know why. ANYWAy, here is my problem. My two dogs are wonderful dogs and I love them dearly. They have, however, started going to the bathroom horribly in the house, ecspecially in my kids' bedrooms. I'm talking, my whole house is literally covered in pee and poo and I can't get the smell and all the stains out no matter what I do. I am having to steam clean my carpet several times a week just to get it as clean as I can. They were completely potty trained at once with no accidents at all. Now it's like as soon as they get the chance, even if they don't "have" to go, they'll do it. I took them to the vet and they're both physically completely healthy. I let them go outside constantly since I'm a stay at home mom and praise them when they go outside. Most of the time I even leave my door to the back yard open so they can go in and out freely. They'll just go upstairs and do their business like they've been locked inside for weeks or something. I can't take it anymore. My house smells like I'm a filthy person and I'm so OCD it isn't even funny. It was bad enough with their fur, but I love them so much and it ws my decision to get them so I groomed them regularly and vaccumed and dealt with it, but now my daughter who's 7 months can't even learn to crawl without me worrying about her putting her face and little knees in dog poo and pee. I spend asmuch time as I can with the dogs. I have tried every sort of advice that people have given me to make them stop but they wont. Kenneling them works, obviously, they wont go when they're in it, and they'll go outside, but they'll come right back in and force pee or poo out on the carpet. I don't want to keep them kenneled up or cooped up ina small part of the house because of this. They have also started to get into my baby's diapers (usually I get them outside in the trash but sometimes when I'm really busy I'll leave one on the counter or in the trash inside) and they'll eat it and drag it all over the house so I literally have baby poop/pee and soggy diaper particles all over my floor which is SOOOOO hard to get up. It makes my house smell like a sewer. i try my best to not forget even one diaper but it's beginning to feel like I'm a prisoner in my own home and I have to walk on egg shells to be perfect so they dont' trash stuff. I can't take it anymore. I'm one person at my wits end. i'm so worried about daughter and husband and with my illness, I'm physically almost dead. I love my dogs more than anything and for the longest time Ihave been holding it out and keeping them and doing whatever I can to make it better (even bringing them to training but I can't afford $800 anymore) but I'm starting to think that I can't do it anymore. One minute I have decided that it's best to find them a good home and then the next I'm thinking that I'm just saying that because I'm just drained right now and it'll get better and they'll change or I'll figure something out later. I don't know what to do anymore. I know this was long sorry, but I don't know whether or not I should keep my dogs. I know if I did, there would be a part of me that would always regret it and I would always miss them, but I don't know if it would be better for them and my sanity, and my family. What should do? Please help, thanks. please no mean people I can't take much more drama without breaking. more

Resolved Question: Starting dog grooming business?

So since I cannot find a job anywhere (teenager) my mom suggested maybe doing a dog grooming business at home. I was considered getting tethers for our bathtub to hold them in place, buying some muzzles for grooming to prevent accidents, getting "vet" loop leashes to walk them, buying bows/ribbons/bandanas to make them look nice after wards, etc. I could clip nails, bathe, learn how to trim dogs and get a book about cuts and learn up on them, etc. Do you think this would work? I'm not so sure I would let my dog go to someone's house that isn't a professional to get this done but if it was cheaper and I could look around I would probably let her stay. What do you guys think? Yay or nay? more

Resolved Question: I need help on whether to stay where I am or switch venues for my dog grooming business?? please help!!?

I'm a pet groomer in a small town in Colorado. I just moved here not to long ago and right now I'm working out of a store, that before me was just a self service wash and pet supplies. I pay her 40%,of what whatever i make with my grooming, for using her tubs, shampoos, and dryers. I can groom before, after and during store hours. people call me for appointments and we both keep track of what i make and what I've payed her. She has changed all her adds to say that she now offers full-service grooming. But i have just got an offer to be the groomer in a new kennel and training place. the lady who is starting it is an amazing trainer who has some existing ideas. She loves me and the way i handle the animals and care for them and she told me that she would have a room in her building just for me. with all the tables and tubs and dryers that i want! and she will let me study under her as a trainer and that some day she will get me certified as a dog trainer. i love animals and this is a dream for me. but the lady I'm grooming for right now is nice and we've become friends and i feel bad that she is changing her adds. but her adds do not say my name on them. we do not have a contract or anything. and she has kinda been pushy when it comes to my scheduling and pricing. she wants me to charge more and over book myself. she doesn't come right out and say that but that's how it makes me feel. what should i do?? and if i do switch places how do i tell the lady I'm working with right now?? any advice would help thank you. more

She has changed all her adds to say that she now offers full-service grooming. But i have just got an offer to be the groomer in a new kennel and training place. the lady who is starting it is an amazing trainer who has some existing ideas. She loves me and the way i handle the animals and care for them and she told me that she would have a room in her building just for me. with all the tables and tubs and dryers that i want! and she will let me study under her as a trainer and that some day she will get me certified as a dog trainer. i love animals and this is a dream for me. but the lady I'm grooming for right now is nice and we've become friends and i feel bad that she is changing her adds. but her adds do not say my name on them. we do not have a contract or anything. and she has kinda been pushy when it comes to my scheduling and pricing. she wants me to charge more and over book myself. she doesn't come right out and say that but that's how it makes me feel. what should i do?? and if i do switch places how do i tell the lady I'm working with right now?? any advice would help thank you. more

Voting Question: Does anyone know anything about pet sitting/fostering, that kind of thing?

I've been thinking alot about what I want to do with my life, and that I've always wanted to work with animals but I never wanted to be a vet or anything like that, because I can't do blood and needles, and the years of education... So i thought about dog walking, and everyone told me "no, theres not enough demand and you'll barely be able to make anything" so I said fair enough. Then I thought, what about opening a pet sitting home? Everyone is always saying how they hate to leave their dogs at home and stuff, and there would be a much higher demand for that. Plus I could include dog walking and grooming as extras. I could buy a little plot of land and start my own business... but anyway I'm getting off into a dream land. My question is really, does anyone have any experience with this kind of business? Could I make a living doing this? Does it sound like a possible idea??Jessica - I have no idea what petco is? But I am a volunteer at Cats Protection agency, just helping to socialize with cats and get them used to people. Umm I didn't know that pet sitting involved sick and dying animals... thats the whole reason I wanted to do pet sitting. I thought it was just looking after peoples pets while their off doing whatever, at work or on holiday. but if thats the case, i guess theres just no job with animals I can do :( i should just give up. more

Resolved Question: I want to buy a house...a few questions?

My fiance and I want to get out of our small apartment and get a house. Right now combined we make about 50-60 thousand a year. However I have just started a pet services business and have a lot of clients that want me to board. So I projected a minimum of 50 for me so that'd be a combined salary of $70,000 I'm looking in the 225,000-250,000 range. Is this completely out of our reach. I will also be grooming dogs in this house as well, for some additional income. What sort of surprise fees should we expect monthly. I want a freehold house, so no maintenance fees. I know that there is the mortgage fees, and property taxes...but I have no idea about closing costs and anything else. Can someone just clear it up for me a little? REALLY appreciate.Sorry forgot to mention with a $15000 down payment. more

Voting Question: POLL: CHOOSING A NAME FOR MY PET SERVICES COMPANY...THANKS!?

I am about to get started with a pet services company. Dog walking will be the main business for now, but will also offer pet sitting, and pet visits...later I will add pet photography, day care and grooming. The name I'm leaning towards (and that is doing well amongst friends) is A Rebel With Paws....but I also have Muttley Crew, For Pet's Sake, and The Haute Dog in the running.... I am sick of all the mushy girly names out there, and while I'd like it to still be a little cute, I want it to be fun, and convey a little attitude! I myself and a little quirky, and want to stand out from all the other business names when people google! My main demographic will be young, trendy professionals in their 30's and 40's who are relatively wealthy, are style/image conscious, and want the highest level of service. The younger side of the demo will be mostly young urban professional couples without kids that live along a waterfront and very much like to enjoy a high quality of life. The older clients will come from a different neighborhood. Well off families with kids and a very busy lifestyle. Again, they are very aware of trends and like to be up to date on them. Of course, all of these people want the best care for their pets, and care enough to make sure they find the right person. I just want to stand out and prove to them that I'm it! Do you like the name? I was thinking the website could use warm colours that make you feel good - like mandarin orange and cherry blossom pink....and along the side the name could be written in a Miami Ink/Christian Audigier cool tattoo style and sparkle a little - I'd throw a paw in for the 'a' in paw to contrast the bad-*** with some cutesy. The links to the pages could be found in different parts of the tattoo or something. I don't know! Feedback would be great... Oh, and I just want to say I like the word 'rebel' because these are all urban dogs....and I'll be picking them up and taking them on walks on these beautiful ravine/forested trails, and sometimes to the beach. Basically I'm taking them out of the city (not really, but out of the city environment). They are 'rebelling' the urban lifestyle... I mean, basically the name is just supposed to be catchy, but there is SOME meaning behind it...I guess I thought it would be fun. And that even if you didn't get it at first, I'd like the name to at least drive traffic to the website when a potential client is surfing web looking for a dog walker. From there a great website would give you a taste of my personality and show the quality of service that I have to offer. So basically I'm just hoping the name will be catchy and fun enough for people to take notice... Additional Details When somebody googles pet sitting or dog walking and my business comes up listed under business on the google maps, I am making the assumption that they know what I do...and again am looking to drive traffic. When I meet people face to face they will also hear what I do directly from me...I suppose that's why I wanted to do something a little different. There will also be a tag line on business cards, and over-sized post cards that I'd print would also explain the services...does that info help show you where I'm coming from? The city is Toronto, Canada.... And I guess Rebel Paws could be an option for something short.... rebelpaws.com more

I am a student right now in dog obedience/instructor. I live in fort campbell, ky. I have so far begun training my neighbors and friends dogs. I asked my professor how to get more hands on and he said to try to start a beginners obedience class or to walk, sit, or even try grooming. I would really like to do this but am unsure how to start. I am wondering if others would trust me with their pets too since I do have a little but not alot of experience. Can someone please give me some advice? more
