. moreAfter 200 years, Adam Smith is honoured in Edinburgh
The invisible hand of a Calgary entrepreneur helped build a monument to a neglected free market economist. Matthew Johnston - July 18, 2008
On July 4th, a ceremony was held in Edinburgh, Scotland to unveil a statue of economist Adam Smith, 200 years after his death.
While the monument, paid for entirely with private money, was erected by the London-based Adam Smith Institute, a Calgary entrepreneur played an early and important role in honouring this neglected free market economist and Edinburgh's most illustrious son.
. moreNo Free Trade for Obama
You see, while all us American workers are “buying American," the American entrepreneur, to avoid the expense of our environmental laws and high labor costs, is taking his other capital overseas. So, the “Buy Only American" campaign must be matched by its equivalent the “Hire Only American" campaign. Haven't heard of it yet? No you haven't, and you won't. The American worker has been betrayed by the American capitalist. That is why free trade is not free and that is why trade agreements must require that foreign manufacturers comply with our labor and environmental laws before they should be allowed to compete in our great country against those who are willing to keep their capital at home and hire Americans. And who wants to do this? Sen. Barack Obama. You want the best for everyone not just the foreign oligarch and American capitalist? Vote for Obama. more

My english teacher wants me to write about the difficulties i have faced learning english and has my attitude towards English changed? my english is not that grate even though i have written a paragraph about the difficulties i have faced learning English. i don't know the proper way of writhing in essay format. i would really appreciate your help. My name is *********. I was born in a middle class family in India. My father is a respectable person in the community and my mother is a teacher. Since I was a child, my parents always wanted me to become an engineer by enrolling me in English high school. However, I India where I lived there were no English schools. When I was four years old I was enrolled in Gujarati School which was a local language school. After two years, my parents moved to Bombay because of lack of business and for my education. I was enrolled in English school from grade second in Bombay. As I was a small kid, I started learning new things and liked doing different things like painting, craft, sports but I disliked English language even though fellow students giggled at me. I always had problems understanding grammar and never got good marks in English. My teacher always called my parents complaining about my poor grades and bad performance in school. My father never shouted at me even though I was bad in studies but he always used to tell me that one day I will realized how important English language is. As time went by, I finished my grade tenth but didn't’t get good marks so I dropped from my school without finishing grade 12th. My father was angry but didn't’t say anything. I started helping my father in his business since I was out of school. For almost eight years I helped my father in his business but for some reason my father had to close down the business. After the closing down the business I didn't’t had anything to do so i started looking for job but never got one. Everywhere I went the employer wanted a college graduate which I was not. As I was 24 year old I started realizing how big mistake I did by not studying English and not finishing my studies but it was too late. In India once you are twenty you cannot finish your high school. I had to compromise with my life and I started working in a small company and the salary was not so grate. Nothing looked grate in my life and was loosing my confidence. Luckily, I was hired by a travel agency as a tour guide, taking the travellers to Dubai for their vacation trip but even there English was required which I was not proficient. While on my trip I met a girl who was from London. We became friends and got married. She sponsored me and I went to London. The reason behind going to a new country was because for my studies hoping one day I will finish my qualification and live a good life. But it was not an easy task. Even after four years studying was not an easy task especial English. Learning English language was a tough job for me. Teachers were excellent and new their stuff but I did not know any of the words or their meanings. I left the class with a miserable feeling that I had never felt before. But I had to move on and had to finish my courses. i had to changed my self in order to learn English even though I hated moreResolved Question: Do I even need to file schedule C?
I don't have any license yet, but will get one next week. I'm unemployed so I started selling things around my apartment since a few months ago. And I have also pick up a hobby of crafting, and sell sell the things I made. I was told that I have to file schedule C on internet incomes. I sell my things on ebay and etsy and have all my transaction on paypal. I buy everything and sell everything mainly online. And I also print shipping postage on paypal so I have no paper receipts to keep at all. I upload all my transaction from paypal to outright (Bookkeeping Program) and trying to sort out my expense. I put Shipping fee, paypal, ebay, etsy fees under "Cost of Goods Sold and I also put things that I buy then resell on ebay under "Cost of Goods Sold." After all the sorting, it shows I have $2000 income on the first line. But after all the fees and deductions, I have -$400 loss on "Net profit or (loss)" What's the point of me filing it when I'm not even making money? Is it really necessary for me file this income? The schedule C s very complicated, but plan to file it with my husband's tax return. Turbo tax fee version don't have Schedule C, so I plan to get the home and business edition. It cost $74,95, do you think it's worth it? moreResolved Question: do you think my pet buissness might work?
i love animals and pets and stuff, I also have always wanted to own a pet store. My mom brought this idea up. I have a cat grass / cat nip plants. And I know how to care and dry the crop. I recently dried some. Anyway, getting to the point my mom said I could make little cat toys. Her brothers own a family Business. Its textiles and I think they make stuff like pillows and all. So then my mom said she could ask them to make little toys, which then I could fill with stuff like the cat nip and cat grass. I would buy the toys from them and stuff. Then once I made the complete toy, I could sell them online or sell them in a pet shop. I would also do other stuff, not just cat toys. Do you think it might work out? Also at a craft fair or something, I have seen stuff like that but instead its the things you put in drawers, they kinda started like How I might. moreVoting Question: parents of little girls - request for honest critique?
Hello all! I am a mother to a little girl (she just turned 6!) and currently cooking our #2 (gender TBD). I am also a struggling artist who is trying to build a business of artwork and handmade items. I've begun creating girl's accessories to sell at craft fairs and via etsy. I opened my etsy shop in October and I've not been able to sell anything, yet, despite my greatest efforts. My goal is for this venture to start making money so that my family doesn't suffer financially during my maternity leave this summer, and maybe I could even stay home for a bit with my baby and work from my studio. So, back to the question. Below is a link to my etsy shop, as well as a link to my facebook fan page. I welcome any critique of my stuff, as well as suggestions or ideas. I want to start my own small business to sell my ceramics. I want to start small in craft shows and such. I looked up the Virginia Bazaar, which is relatively close to my home in Richmond. To sell there you must have a business license, but I don't because I don't even have a business yet. What do I do start my business and get a license? moreVoting Question: Would you feel worried and disturbed if you read a story a 14-year-old wrote about incest & physical abuse?
Earlier tonight I read a question a 14-year-old girl had asked in Books & Authors about a disturbing story she wrote about severe physical abuse and domestic violence, and then read another question she'd asked in Adolescent and here about how to cover up welts left from a "spanking" (beating) she'd gotten from her parents for misbehaving at school so kids in her gym class wouldn't see them. I then realized that the same user had asked a question I read a couple of days ago about a story she wrote about a father raping his four-year-old daughter and then beating her, and it was really graphic and sickening. One answerer wrote that there was no way she was 14-year-old as she claimed to be because the grammar was so perfect, and even a very intelligent and precocious teen wouldn't be capable of writing a story so well crafted. The thing is, I am a seventeen-year-old who is very articulate and knowledgeable, and people on here have commented before that they're surprised about my age, and may have even doubted my genuineness. Anyway, my point is that I think a 14-year-old really could have the ability to write that well, but how would you know such details about rape and abuse if you had zero experience with it? I mean, yes, I started reading books in middle school that covered really mature subjects, including incest and rape, but I still couldn't have written a story with so much graphic detail about bleeding after sex and how welts raise on your legs after being beaten with a belt when I was 14. I am worried that maybe this girl is really being horribly abused and mistreated. I usually have a strong troll meter, but I don't know this time. Would you report something like this to Y!A? Supposedly they cooperate with authorities and can turn things over to local police officers for them to investigate by looking up the user's IP address. I mean, even if the stories are just totally fictional, she's still asking about a "spanking" so severe welts will cover her bum to her knees the next day. She also asked questions about teachers being obligated to report abuse. I'm not like a stalker trying to invade her privacy by reading her Q&A, but it had been public earlier tonight and I looked over the questions out of concern. Or do you think she's just a weird adult making all this up, and I'm just being naive and paranoid to even worry about a stranger? I mean, I would just mind my business but she's posted this on the internet for the world at large to see, so I don't know if I'm like morally compelled to do something and at least report it. Maybe I'm just being ridiculous and overreacting. I don't know.http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvNF.XCqXU9yeY65C5ehYSoAAAAA;_ylv=3?qid=20100104123338AAArKTs http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AuX7hLkzrWx638YHE2JYyYQAAAAA;_ylv=3?qid=20100105142529AALHDf6 http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ArSaQLfO7YOJFYcQMpRMejPsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100105135612AAclCDm&show=7#profile-info-f1hjLLX4aa moreResolved Question: Idea to start a business with?
I need to think of an idea to create a business for school. My teacher said to choice something that has to do with something we like to do, but I can't think of anything. I also hear the Roland Cutter is a better machine (but a little more money than I care to spend right now). We are starting up a business and need to cut many small, fairly simple wood shapes for crafts that we can't find already pre-cut. But tracing and cutting the same pattern over and over with a scroll saw can be very tedious. We've considered outsourcing the cutting, but think it may be more cost effective just to buy our own machine. We're sure there's a machine where you can enter a pattern and it can cut it over and over for you, but we have no idea what it's called or where to find one. We're willing to invest the money for the machine, but we don't know where to start. Any ideas? moreResolved Question: What is a good business name for my company?

Can I make something and sell it to people for cash and not need any kind of permit or license to do so? I know when some people do a service like mowing lawns or babysitting - they do the job and get paid cash and it's a done deal - so if I make something like cookies/cupcakes and sell them to people will I need the proper documents allowing me to do it? Or if I make some kind of craft and sell it to people will I need something to do that? I'm not trying to start a business, just want to make some extra cash.I live in an apartment community, and they don't allow soliciting - so could I post a flyer or card about my service on the bulletin board beside the mail boxes - or is that considered soliciting? moreVoting Question: Confused Film/Video college graduate with no career...what to do?
OK..so in a few months I'll have my Bachelor's of Science from a decently respected four-year college here in Maryland. I enjoy making films/videos with a passion...and I consider myself very good at editing, possibly writing a short film/video/commercial. I have received many accolades for my work at school and I even submitted one to the Maryland Film Festival as I think it stands a shot to be viewed; it's a documentary about homelessness in Baltimore city, very powerful stuff...That being said, I'm 23 and the parents are getting pretty antsy that I get a job now, so I can only imagine how they'll be after I graduate. I definitely don't want to do the whole Best Buy associate thing, been there done that. No retail or anything like that as I'd go crazy. My, technically "double major" is Computer Information Systems with a Networking focus and I worked at Social Security headquarters for a year as an IT Specialist and was also very good at my job...but I realized sitting at a desk working on PC's wasn't for me, it was just mind-numbing bureaucratic work. So I gave up a lifetime of job security and a great pension to preserve my sanity. My question is...what can I do now? Are there any careers in film/video (freelancing, working for production company, shooting weddings?) where I can save up for a little bit and then be self-sufficient to get my parents off my back, perhaps move out on my own? A lot of the guys I go to school with are already doing stuff like they were electricians on the set of 'The Wire' here in Baltimore. They're starting their careers by being gaffers, grips, best boys..film stock loaders. All those technical positions. I really don't know how to do any of that...all I know is how to write films/videos and shoot them and edit them, that's all I know. Are there jobs for me or do I have to look in another direction when I graduate with my 3.2 GPA in film/video? So many people are going to community colleges to learn a new craft after graduation. Other people are going to like law school...or to get their MFA in film (which really doesn't help you get hired, I've been told). Everyone's giving me so much advice about going to grad school or forgetting about this film business and going to work as an IT guy at some office, just doing films/videos in my spare time. But it's my passion...I want to tell stories, move people, I can't do that fixing some PC at some office. So what do I do? Does the world need anymore lawyers, I'm tired of studying and I know that it's a very demanding 3 years of law school...Should I go to the community college and get a certificate in something like criminal justice so that I can be a legal assistant or something, at least that's more fun than computers. Maybe I could be like a multimedia teacher at high school if I get certified...? Honestly guys, I really don't care what I do. Whether it's being a Forest Park Administrator, being one of those Special-ed teachers at my old high school, whatever!! I'm just trying to get my parents off my back and earn some money, somehow, be it through film or some other career. Do you guys have any advice on something like that? Where I can be around people, social, not behind a desk...Be creative and express myself both verbally and through written word. Maybe I could start my own business and show old ladies how to set up their computer...people like me and I'm a nice guy. Would that work? I'm just trying to get my parents off my back...cuz they've been supporting me, paying thousands of dollars for college these last 5 years, and I just have to move out and get on with my life!!! I beg you guys, please help!!! moreVoting Question: How can I start selling homemade baby items?
I just had a baby 2 months ago, and really picked up sewing. I made my son custom boppy pillow cases, burp cloths, bibs, blankets, slings, and wipe cases. I want to invest in a embroidery machine, and really start a business. I live in Texas how can I go about doing this. I really would like to try maybe a home-based business first like selling my stuff online or at my local craft store, but would eventually love to turn it into a real business how can I get started? Do I need any license to do this at home? Can I get in trouble for selling items like slings that weren't my idea? Will I have to file my taxes as self-employed. I'm so confused, and defiantly don't want to get in any trouble. Thanks in advance. moreResolved Question: How many sewing patterns are sold each year in the US and Europe?
Ideally, I'd like to also understand the number of patterns sold for: (1) clothes (2) costumes and crafts Rough estimates or ballpark figures/ideas are fine. Or barring that, pointing me in the right direction where I might be able to find this info would be great. This info will help for some research I'm conducting for a small start-up that is looking to expand in a new direction. I haven't had any luck trying to find this info online nor in apparel industry reports available at the nearby business school library. Thanks! moreVoting Question: Business Ideas for a partnership?

I know someone who wants to sell their crafts and start a business but isn't sure what percentage discount is right to offer friends, family and colleagues. To give the items away fro free would scupper the business before it starts! But to charge full price seems wrong. Is there a standard percentage discount that is generally considered reasonable? Are the percentages for friends, family and colleagues different? moreResolved Question: Questions About Starting An Online Business?

FCC Votes to Begin Crafting `Net Neutrality' Rules Oct 22 12:42 PM US/Eastern By JOELLE TESSLER AP Technology Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal regulators took an important step Thursday toward prohibiting broadband providers from favoring or discriminating against certain kinds of Internet traffic. Despite the concerns of telecommunications companies and the agency's two Republicans, the Federal Communications Commission voted to begin writing so-called "network neutrality" regulations. Proponents say the rules would prevent phone and cable companies from abusing their control over the market for broadband access. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said regulations are needed to ensure that broadband subscribers can access all legal Web sites and services, including Internet calling applications and video sites that compete with the broadband companies' core businesses. "Internet users should always have the final say about their online service, whether it's the software, applications or services they choose, or the networks and hardware they use to the connect to the Internet," Genachowski said. The FCC's two other Democrats voted to support his plan. The agency's two Republican commissioners voted merely to start the formal rule-making process, but said they are opposed to the substance of Genachowski's proposal. Republican Commissioner Robert McDowell said he remains unconvinced that broadband providers are engaging in widespread anticompetitive behavior that requires government intervention. "I do not share the majority's view that the Internet is showing breaks and cracks, nor do I believe that the government is the best tool to fix it," he said. Next up for the FCC is to actually craft the rules, with a vote on whether to adopt them expected to come by next summer. That would culminate a five-year debate in Washington that has pitted Internet companies such as Google Inc. against some of the biggest phone and cable companies—including AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and Comcast Corp. The broadband providers insist they need flexibility, free from government intervention, to keep their networks running smoothly. They want to ensure that high-bandwidth applications such as YouTube videos don't hog too much capacity and impede other traffic, like e-mail and online searches. They also say that net neutrality regulations would discourage them from expanding and upgrading their networks. "We continue to hope that any rules adopted by the commission will not harm the investment and innovation that has made the Internet what it is today and that will make it even greater tomorrow," Comcast Executive Vice President David L. Cohen said in a statement. But companies such as Google, Amazon.com Inc., eBay Inc.'s Skype and Facebook Inc. argue that without such rules, the broadband companies will become online gatekeepers that can prioritize their own online services or those of their business partners—and potentially put others at a disadvantage. Markham Erickson, executive director of the Open Internet Coalition, called Thursday's vote "the first step toward ... creating a framework that promotes innovation and consumer choice on the Internet." The Open Internet Coalition represents public interest groups and big Internet companies, including Google, Amazon and eBay. Genachowski's plan calls for the agency to formally adopt four broadband principles that have guided the FCC's enforcement of communications laws on a case-by-case basis. Those principles state that network operators must allow subscribers to access all online content, applications, services and devices as long as they are legal. The FCC relied on those guidelines last year when it ordered Comcast to stop blocking subscribers from using an online file-sharing service called BitTorrent, which is used to transfer big files such as online video. Comcast is challenging the FCC ruling in court. Genachowski also wants the FCC to adopt two additional principles that would bar broadband providers from discriminating against particular content or applications and require them to disclose network management practices. And he is seeking to apply all six rules across all types of broadband networks, including wireless systems, which have been largely unregulated. "The time is now to move forward with consideration of fair and reasonable rules of the road," Genachowski said Thursday. "It would be a serious failure of responsibility not to consider such rules, for that would be gambling with the most important technological innovation of our time." I'm helping my mom with a craft show taht she is doing in November. She has been making jewelry for about a year now and she's really starting to get further out there than just family and friends. I'd like to make some business cards for her and have a business name. She has just been saying "Diana's Beadwork" but that doesn't seem like a very memorable business name to me. It's a small business, run from in home. I just want some suggestions for a creative name. Her name is Diana and I think she'd like her name in it, but if not, all is well. thanks! moreResolved Question: Selling crafts online, 14 years old?
I would like to start a buisness... uhm, this will be kinda long. Finding a job has been really difficult and I can't find a single business in my area[walking distance, willing to walk up to 3 miles.. maybe more :/] that will hire a 14 year old. The youngest I've seen is 15. I want to get some experience, and well, make some money. Obviously I can't get any experience so I'm turning to my creative side. I have sold art online before, I'm not looking to do that. Occasional I'll draw something up and sell it to virtual pet site owners but I've been making small charms, cell phone charms and keychains and selling them to family and friends. They've been a hit and I'm wondering, is it legal for me, at 14, to sell them online on etsy or ebay, and if so, which is better? Concerning paypal, I use my mother's. It's under her name and all but I use it to receive the money and such. Thanks (: moreResolved Question: Cute Business name for girls...?

I am starting a beading party business for birthdays, craft nights, etc. and I am wondering what is the best way to select beads? Anyone who offers these types of parties would be a great help. How do you select what types of beads to use for each party? Do you wait until you talk to the mom/host to get an idea of favorite colors etc? What is a good basic, starter collection? As an adult beader, I have a very stylistic selection for my own pieces, but I'm overwhelmed by all of the options for kids! Thank you for any help! moreResolved Question: any advice welcome, should i resign or stick it out?
i have enjoyed my job for the last 3 years, i've worked hard and get on well with the other staff. but over the last few months things have happened, the atmosphere has changed, as has the management. it seems to be spiralling into the depths. despite doing my absolute best, which has been good enough for them in the past, i've had verbal warnings about my performance and now i'm beginning to detest my job. it's causing me endless stress, anxiety and depression. i'm actively looking for other work, but with the recession i am finding it difficult - competition for jobs is much greater as is the availability of jobs. i have a variety of skills that could apply to various trades, but most of them are unproven - i.e. un-certified. i was going to start part-time studying with the open university, to get some of these skills proven. But when all this stress started, i put it on hold. At the moment i'm trying to decide whether to resign, i know that it can be a bad idea to to do this without having another job to go to, but i don't know what other options i have. it's not like i'll financially benefit from resigning as i am unable to claim things such as Income based Job-seekers Allowance due to my partners earnings being over the threshold. i am also unable to claim any contribution based benefits as my National Insurance credits maybe to low or only offer enough to claim for a limited time. and then there's the expense of X-mas to consider, despite having no children. it's also not viable for me to become a full time student as i do not really like the idea of burdening myself with student debt when i'm almost 30. i've thought about starting my own business, using my art, craft and design skills (which i don't currently use in my job) but i am limited by space to do so and not sure this is a good idea with the recession and the possibility of not making any profit from such a business until after the 1st year. i'm feeling rather frazzled by all of this and am unsure of the best option for me. all advice will be appreciated.GEORGE, I'M NOT A STUDENT!! moreResolved Question: what kind of license do i need to start my own jewelry making business on ebay and etsy?

I am 19 years old and I have always loved working with children. I love reading, the outdoors, crafts, and many other "kid friendly" things. Everyone in my family always comments on how good I am with kids, and that I should look into being a teacher. At the moment I am in a difficult financial situation, and I do not want want to have to pay off a ton of student loans and put myself farther in debt. However recently I found an accredited program with transferable credits that would allow me to get my associates degree in Early Childhood Education, at a very affordable cost. I would also be able to get my CDA certificate. My long term goal would be to start my own small home run day care and include tutoring, and in the summer do a "summer school" program. My aunt had an in home daycare for 30+ years so I feel I already know a lot about the business. I would also take CPR and a health and safety course. Is this a good career move?I just want to clarify that I am not willing to put myself much farther into debt, and I have no one to co-sign on anything. moreResolved Question: What is the best way to present your product to a business for resale?
