Motorola to reorganize home and networks unit
N: Quote, Profile, Research) will create three businesses within its home and networks mobility business to focus on the sectors' growth potential, the cell phone maker said.
The home and networks mobility business, led by Dan Moloney, will now comprise three businesses: broadband home solutions, broadband access solutions and cellular networks, the company said.
The unit, which had revenue of $2.4 billion in the first quarter, supplies equipment to telephone companies and cable television companies for voice, data and video services.
The unit previously had been organized as a mixture of businesses, making cable set-top boxes, modems, cable infrastructure and network gear to carry voice and data signals, the Wall Street Journal newspaper said.
"This organizational change will ensure that home and networks mobility remains agile, focused and ideally aligned to realize its growth potential," Motorola said in a statement obtained by Reuters. more

SAP said on April 30 it saw full-year 2008 software and software-related service revenue increasing in a range of 24-27 percent at constant currencies. It now expects to reach the upper end of that range.
The outlook excludes a revenue write-down from last year's acquisition of Business Objects -- its biggest ever -- of around 180 million euros.

Enrolled Agent with very few clients, BS in Acctg, 53 with 30 plus years of accounting however since 4/01 worked for 1 major client who in 10/07 I terminated due to them hiring inside accountant. Worked for 1 Tax Season in 2008 and since then have not had any luck. My Dilemma: 1. Go back and take CPA even though this doesn't really excite me...all those studying hours again! Course Robert Half consultant told me come back when you have your MBA and CPA...my other issue are my grades in college were below 3.0 so how could I even qualify for Grad School? 2. Try to find temp work since full time is not available since recently was told I do not have quantifiable previous employment history from a Business Careers Consultant. 3. I am currently a sophomore going for a Bachelors degree in Accounting. I want to be a CPA and serve individuals and small businesses in the future. I am highly interested in Taxation. I currently reside in a state where I am able to take the CPA exam but need 1 more year of accounting grad school to get a CPA license. I have done much research and I have noticed that salary does not have much significance in regards to Grad school vs just a bachelors degree when you are a CPA. I am planning on passing the CPA exam as soon as i graduate with a bachelors, move to a non-150 hour state such California, Colorado, etc and just meet the public accounting experience. I currently have an undergraduate degree in Business Management, but decided only after I was close to graduation that I wanted to become a CPA. I did take some courses in accounting at the undergraduate level. I have already enrolled in an MBA program with a concentration in Accounting. I just started so I can easily change schools (all 9 of my grad units will transfer to most schools). I have had a couple of people tell me to go with the MBA in Accounting and study/sit for the CPA since I'll have the units (<150/24/24). Others have told me to take an MS in Accounting then sit for the CPA because I'll be specialized in it. I have a bachelor's degree in political science/pre-law and a master's degree in public services management with public policy concentration. The graduate program is like an MBA program for the public sector. I most recently completed a post-MBA certificate program in auditing because I am interested in it as a career. However, I've taken various accounting and business classes at the local community college since I finished my graduate degree program. I am taking a tax course now. I need 4 more semester hours in business to sit for the CPA exam in Illinois. I started the process to sit for the Certified Internal Auditor exam, and I'd like to get the Cert. Government Auditing Professional designation, too. The CPA designation will be more universal, though. I really want to get out of my current career in social services and get into doing some auditing work. I liked social services but am getting tired of making no money and getting yelled at by people who make more and get welfare. Is not having an accounting degree hurting my chances? I have no audit experience. Would having a credential be best? I can't spend any more money on school...and don't want to. Does anyone think I could get an entry level job now in auditing (maybe with a small CPA firm that does municipal audits, nonprofit audits, etc.). originally i came to my college because of the economics major (am an econ major w/ accounting emphasis). i found that the only relevant firms that come to recruit at my campus are all accounting firms. i'd like to take the opportunity to use the campus recruitment to maybe get some experience in the accounting field. problem is, the Big 4 companies keep mentioning the CPA exams in the internship descriptions (e.g. "meet the minimum requirements to sit the CPA exam before starting full time," "explain how you're planning to pass the exam" etc.). i want to intern with the big 4 since i believe i'll be able to explore different things that may interest me. but it just makes me feel obligated to plan on taking the CPA exam already, even though i still don't know for sure if i absolutely wanna go into accounting. so, should i still apply for internship with the big 4? or will they laugh at me or something if i tell them that i'm not sure yet about the CPA exam? i just can't make that kind of decision yet. i'm also thinking about going for a master's degree (most likely in econ or business)... or should i focus on applying for internship with other accounting firms that don't seem to "pressure" me as much? thanks moreResolved Question: What taxes do I need to file for my small business?
I am helping a friend with a small business he recently started Nov. 2009. He has no overhead, no employees, & he has charged each customer sales tax. New quikbooks & new business owner recently set up chart of accounts, vendors, bank accounts etc with the assistance of a CPA. I just found a bunch of receipts from a lot of things I have recently purchased for my business start up stuff, office supplies etc. I am wondering how I can record these things into my quikbooks account without effecting my bank account balance; as these things were paid for in cash prior to my business bank account being setup. In 2009 I started a small photography business and have been open for business. Throughout the year my expenses involved equipment purchases as well as fees to set up a website, forms, props, computer, software and some educational expenses, all totaling about 15k. My income for the year was much less than my expenses. What forms do I need to fill out to deduct all of my equipment purchases? At first I thought I just had to do the Schedule C, but then as I started to go through the Sch C, I find out about the Form 4562. I don't see a spot on Sch C for Equipment purchases, where does this go? Thanks for your assistance. Hi, Our tax advisor is out of country. We are seeking your help and advise. IRS is examining our 2007 personal return. They asked us to send supporting documentation for Schedule C expenses we claimed: 1) Other Expenses 2) Vehicle Expenses To give you background, we were in Cleveland, Ohio and exploring for business opportunities in 2007. Initially, from Jan through May, we traveled to Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Columbus during weekends through some leads. Also we were looking for business through online websites and newspapers. In May, we had found a gas station for sale in about 20 miles from our place. We talked to the seller. Based on what he said, the business seemed promising so we wanted to purchase. He asked us to put a 10k deposit and so he can start training as we had no idea on gas station business. Also he indicated that it may take about 4 - 6 months to transfer ownership as its a name brand gas franchise. We believed his words and put a $10K deposit with a bill of sale agreement and started training and paperwork with the franchise to transfer ownership. We had gone to the franchise corporate office for interview and exams as well. The seller promised that we can get our deposit back if we back out or transfer process doesn't go through. From May through September we had training almost everyday. It seemed like business wasn't doing very well due to competition on the other corner. Before proceeding further (its already too late :-), we decided to go to a CPA and get his previous tax returns verified. We went to a local CPA, showed his tax papers, paid $75 towards consultation fee, she suggested not to buy the gas station as it had liabilities. Next day, we went to the seller and told him that we wanted to backout. He agreed to give our money back after few days. So went to him a few times. He said he can give in multiple payments, so he gave a check for $2,500. We deposited the check in a local bank but it was bounced. We tried sending emails, calling, and went in person. But he said he cannot give our money. We wanted to give him some time and try again. But he never gave our money back. When we were doing taxes for 2007, we explained all this to our tax advisor, he suggested to claim all this a pre business expenditure (loss) on a schedule C as follows: Other expenses: $10K (deposit lost) + $75 (CPA consultation fee) Vehicle expenses: all miles travelled However we do have check images to support other expenses. Also we do have vehicle service records avaialble to support the vehicle miles log (Dec 2006, Apr 2007, Dec 2007). IRS asked us to send completed business questionnaire plus vehicle information as well. We've all the information but not sure how to put all this together. Kindly suggest the approach. I'm 24, male, and I live in California the last year (I moved here in January). About the same time in january I got a crappy job, and then starting making money as an online advertiser from home (buying ad-space on google and whatnot). Now, almost 1 year later I have made probably 30k revenue (although for the first 6 months I wasn't making real money at all, I had that crappy job then I quit when I started making several thousand a month). The problem is I haven't kept up with my finances and now I need to go through and find how much I owe in taxes. I do NOT have a business entity set up (yet). I don't have an llc, s-corp, etc.. I'm just a sole individual. During this period I also had 2 incidents where I went to the ER twice which cost about $7 or 8k (I don't have insurance), a business trip to vegas Which cost 1-2k and some other things. My question is, being male, 24, single, no business entity, living in california... 1. Can I write off my large medical bills as an expense so that I don't have to count it towards the profit/income that I need to pay taxes on? 2. Can I write off all the other things that have to do with business.. such as the vegas business trip, a portion of my rent, a portion of my cellphone bill, a portion of my food, etc? Someone told me unless I have a business entity (not a sole proprietor) I can't write anything off.. it's all counting as income, whether its a medical bill or biz expense or whatever. Another person told me though that I can in fact do that. Anyone have any tips? I plan to get a CPA so I don't need to ask on yahoo answers (lol), but a 100% positive answer by someone would really help ease my tension in case I end up having to pay taxes on all those medical bills. For those of us in the lower marginal brackets, who should we let do our taxes? Up to this point, the overriding response (which I greatly appreciate, naysayers included) has been that CD-ROMS are still as innacurrate as the person deciding where the input goes, tax preparers in most states still not need licensing, therefore they are totally unreliable and unverifiable, and even large firms like H&R Block are still abound with errors. If all the aforementioned is correct, then who do I go to if I cannot afford a CPA? Apparently, any alternative to a CPA is no good. While this may be true, the majority of people will never use a CPA unless they absolutely have to, and can afford to do so. So, what if I want to do taxes and I have an accounting degree and one year tax experience, plus 5+ years of online preparation for myself and my family, plus drive and ability? Should I schlep around H&R Block when they are comfortable selling software to the unknowing and uneducated taxpayer? Should I try to work for some tax office whose manager has a GED and a gold tooth? What if these are my only alternatives to starting my own tax business? What if I have a family to feed? What if no CPA firm is currently hiring college graduates? What if I have IRS training, familiarity with a reputable software, produced by company who has a customer-service hotline, and I turn down taxpayers who require a very complex return. What if I could access a large, large base of potential clients with a couple of newspaper advertisements? Could I pull it off? Would I be probably end up being sued? What if I was the most ethical person you ever met? What if I was vehimately opposed to corrupt or questionable tax schemes? And, I made a consicous effort to not prepare returns that were too complex. (Remember, I am an accountant, I have had several tax and business classes, I have been exposed and tested on many tax issues, albeit some more difficult than others.) But, can it work if I work my ass off, I research whenever I get confused, I take proactive steps to limit any errors (such as I'm doing now), and I make sure to remain as professional to my clients as one would expect? Then what? Could it work? Remember, I'm planning on targeting a very large potential customer pool, in several cities. What are my odds? If so many others are doing it (GED and Gold Tooth), why cant I? Please, all opinions are sincerely appreciated. Even if you think I'm still a total idiot, I still really appreciate your opinion, so long as you rationalize. Anyways, thanks again for all your great answers. First of all, I guess I'll explain some things. I am 18 years old (I'll be 19 in January), I go to a local community college (transferring to a university an hour and a half away in 2 years to study pharmacy). I work as a pharmacy technician and I make pretty good money. Currently I live with my parents. My boyfriend is 22, goes to a university here for business and will be done with his degree in a year. He'll be a CPA. We work together. We've been together for 6 months now, but I've known him for almost 3 years. For some crazy reason, I feel like I want to get married. I'm not sure if it's because I'm in college now or what. I am truly in love with him...he makes me want to be better person, he makes me feel great about myself, he's understanding, and he says he's never loved anyone the way he loves me. We started saying I love you after 3 months, if that matters at all. I've never felt this way before EVER. I'm talking about the way I feel about my boyfriend and my urge to get married. I've been feeling about this for 3 weeks. He says these things to me that make me think he might feel the same way, like "I'll never leave you," "You're the best thing that's ever happened to me," and "I can't imagine my life without you." I am so in love with him. I can imagine myself spending the rest of my life together with him. Currently we don't live together and I would definitely want to move in with before anything like that would happen. Also, I'm not exactly saying that I want to get engaged tomorrow and marry him next week. I guess I sorta mean, if we got engaged, it would probably be a year or two before we actually got married. I run a very small business from home that is prob going to make no more than 8,000 my first year. I just started it early this year and will be having a CPA handle everything for me (even if I can do it myself I'd rather have it done right for sure) but I'm a little freaked out about getting audited bcause a friend told me people filing Schedule C forms tend to get audited alot. I'm enrolling back in college and making a fresh start. I have narrowed my focus to be in the financial world. I'm curious about a few things. I have a friend who is attending the University of Arkansas and she's going to be a Certified Public Accountant; she said to be a CPA in Arkansas, you need a bachelors in Accounting and Business Administration or a Masters in Accounting; though the two bachelors would take less time. I am thinking about doing that for now, but not sure what I want to do with them. I was thinking of possibly getting an MBA in Business Administration or in Accounting or Finance. On the other hand, I was thinking of attending Rogers State University and getting a BS in Business Administration and the options would be in Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Forensic Accounting, Human Resources Management, Management, Manufacturing Management, and Marketing. Is there a more clear choice to go with on these? I'm confused. What types of jobs can be opened with these plans? I'm not committed to just any particular job, I was just wanting something in the financial industry because I think it's exciting. Any idea of salary types these degrees bring? P.S. Would a clear degree in Finance be a better choice than either? I've heard that Finance only is a bit more narrower than the above. Any help is appreciated. Hi all, Here's the thing. When it comes to education and what to study, I am in a bit of a pickle. I am 23 years old, and I still haven't found out what I want to study yet. I only have some light ideas about what I maybe would like to do. I have this strange way of looking at it, some might call it very "black and white", which I agree with. Cause basically, in my mind you can go and study a somewhat more profession-targeted degree which makes you end up with a specific profession, such as accountant, lawyer, attorney, doctor for instance. These sort of educations require, in my world, that you go and do a degree in accountancy, law or medicine, and you will then end up with a profession which you can go out and use, straight after university, and actually work. In other words, you study to actually become an accountant, or studying to become a lawyer, or a doctor etc. On the other hand, you have the more "liberal" sorts of degrees. I am tempted to call them "floater" degrees, because in my world they don't really necessary prepare you for a certain profession. For instance, business administration, art, social studies, finance, marketing, economics etc. When you finish a degree within these areas, you don't really come out with a direct profession. You graduate with a specific knowledge within a certain area, which you may or may not like to work within - and then what? You will not be able to call yourself a lawyer, CPA, doctor etc, so I am a bit confused with exactly what I, as an individual, need to choose since I do not have a specific long term ambition of what I want to become. The problem here also is, I do not wish to become either an accountant, lawyer or a doctor, since none of these professions really cover my field of interest. I am a creative mind, I am very interested in film, media, photography, art, fashion and design in general, and I also have a somewhat entrepreneurial drive. However, I am also very interested in money and business, and I like to work within a field that has a certain amount of seriousness to it, otherwise I am not able to take it serious myself, and I quickly lose interest. And, I also want to do something that allows me to live and work within a big international metropolis (such as New York, LA, London etc.), I love to be out in the big world, and I love to be in a place with a certain pulse to it. (I am from Denmark, and we don't really get that much of that kind of stuff around here, which is why I have been traveling for the last two years). So, as you might have discovered already, I am quite confused, and also quite stressed since I really want to get started soon, but don't want to make the wrong decision either. Hey guys, I am entering my senior year in high school and I have my eyes set on going to the University of Washington next year. I don't know if any of you guys have heard of the running start program in the state of Washington but it basically allows high school students to attend classes at local community colleges and gain college and high school credits at the same time. I will have my associates degree from college a few months before I graduate from high school. Afterwards I will go into UW as a mid-year junior. I looked at the degree programs at the University of Washington and I've decided that I will pursue an undergraduate business degree in both finance and accounting. Before I enter the workforce I might also earn a masters degree in accounting and get CPA certified as well. From the looks of things, I should complete those three degrees and get cpa certified by the time I am 21 years old or 22 at the oldest. This leads me to a few questions: 1) After I earn those degrees, will my young age hinder my ability to be competitive with older applicants who are searching for the same jobs as me? I was speaking with my father a while ago and he said that I might have a harder time being competitive due to the lack of maturity and world experience I may have compared to older job seekers. 2) Once I get my degrees from UW, I plan to work a few years and come back and earn an MBA; hopefully from a top 10 or even a top 5 program such as Stanford, MIT, Michigan, etc. Do these high end programs place a large emphasis on where I earned my previous degrees? UW has a good undergraduate business program. It is ranked 21st overall in the nation by U.S. News and its accounting program ranks 14th in the nation. However the entire business school is only ranked 33rd overall by BusinessWeek. If I finish at UW with a decent GPA (3.5 or higher) would I stand a good chance at being able to earn an MBA from one of the top programs later on? Or would MBA programs prefer that I have my undergraduate studies completed at a stronger program? 3) Any opinions on fraternities? Although I have heard mixed opinions about them I am definitely leaning towards joining a fraternity while I am a student there. From what I understand, most people that have been in fraternities don't regret it. It looks good on a resume, you get to meet more people than most other students would be able to, you get to do community services and activities, and I've heard the parties are awesome. My only major concern is the hazing. All of your answers would be greatly appreciated. I've tried finding the answers to my first two questions and I just don't know where to begin looking for them. Hi, I have a BA in Economics with a 3.4 GPA from a top three liberal arts college in the US. Originally, I wanted to go into i-bank for two years, and then studied for a CFA. Due to the recession, I didn't make the cut for an entry level analyst job. Therefore, I decided to start my own investment business for the past two years, and had done extremely well. Here is my delima. I spent 9 years in the banking industry. I started as a telephone sales rep out of college. I worked as Private Banker for sever years, then moved on to become a commercial lender for a few years. I was laid off when the economy started going south, in April of 2008. I am having trouble deciding what would be the best major. I know what it is that I want/would like to do but am not sure of the best path to get there. I am 3rd year senior and married. Currently I am a hospitality management major at Northern Michigan University. The program here is awful in my opinion. I am married and although we are not looking to start a family just yet, whatever degree I do get would have to be compatible with a stay at home mom in the future. I have dabbled with the idea of accounting to be a CPA or getting a degree in management or business. I am interested in catering. Hi. I have a bachelor's degree (not accounting or business-related major). Although I don't have accounting major degree I took lots of accounting and business-related classes at Junior College and University after transfer. I did look at my college transcripts and found out that I only have 3 units left to meet educational requirements (accounting 24 units, business-related 24 units). And I'm thinking about to take "Advanced accounting" or "Auditing (Financial)" class at an accredited education institute. I have a BBA in General Business and have just started a career as a loan officer with a finance company. I am clearly not a salesperson and would like to pursue a career in a more number "crunching" area. I have 7 years of international trade experience, including 5 in management that I do not include on my resume because it is old. I am 40 and looking for work in banking or finance. Current resume information: 1.Director of Operations / General Manager -- I managed a division of a co. for 1.5 years. Started as a temporary clerical position. I salvaged a major account by negotiating a compromise with an irate salesperson and the client. I began doing accounting and found systematic cheating by a large client. The financial materials I prepared to address this resulted in prompt payment of $200,000+. I then took over a failing division of the company and within 7 months the division was profitable. It was sold to someone with an MBA and extensive industry experience and within 6 months the company was bankrupt. The parent company was part of the dot com crash of 2000 and I was again looking for work. 2.Accounting (interim position for an insurance company). Spent a year there before, an urgent personal matter forced me to move on short notice (family related). The president of the insurance division gave me a glowing review and dozens of contacts where I would be moving including members of her family. 3.Wine Distributor, 14 months. Interim position taken immediately after arriving in my hometown. I worked independently for a company several hundred miles away, and reintroduced the company and its brands to this smaller local market with great success. 4.Finance / Credit Analysis / VP I was invivted to join a finance company (commercial leasing / lending). I became an officer of the company and built a significant clientele from scratch and generated the majority of the company's revenue. I was there 6 years before market conditions soured and all staff other than the president and a part-time CPA were cut. Please help me with this question: How should I advise my boss? For sure he will also ask his lawyer/CPA, but I would like to have an idea of what the best course would be so I look smarter than I actually am. He owns two companies: Company A and Company B.
