Business tax break bill passes Senate

A Senate committee has passed a bill to gradually eliminate as much $120 million annually in taxes on business equipment.

The Senate State Affairs Committee voted 5 to 4 today to phase out the tax over five years as long as the state general fund grows by five percent each year. By 2015, the tax would be eliminated no matter what.

Supporters say the bill isn't perfect but can be adjusted in future years since the phase out is gradual.

Idaho companies have been calling for elimination of the tax for years, saying it's hard to calculate and unfair.

The proposal would require the state to reimburse local governments for the lost property tax revenue.

Counties and school districts oppose the bill because it would force them to rely on state payments that are capped and reduce bonding capacity. more

Montreal's Fashion Week open for business

When Montreal Fashion Week opens its doors for business this week, industry watchers and designers will likely see some new faces among the style watchers in attendance.

When the four-day event kicks off its 14th edition on Tuesday featuring fall collections by homegrown and international designers, members of the general public will have the opportunity to see the designs up close and personal themselves -- a first for the city's semi-annual industry showcase.

Armure Urbaine (Urban Armour), a fashion show featuring the latest works of notable Quebec design talents, will be held Thursday at the historic Bonsecours Market, the site of Fashion Week festivities.

Tickets for the event are selling for $30, with all proceeds being donated to the YMCA in support of The Residence and its social reintegration program for women in distress. more

Freebies and cost-cutting: slump survival tactics

Dear FSB: I run a lawn and landscape business in Texas. I was wondering if you believe there will be a change in our business due to the dipping economy. I have met plenty of people with profitable businesses like mine. Is there any way to grow my revenue even further?

- Mike Whittaker, Fort Worth, Texas

Dear Mike: Though there are business owners who are beating the slump (see our package on Defying the Downturn), "the situation is pretty universal," says Bill Zimmerman, a consultant at The Hartford Financial Services Group.

But don't despair yet. Zimmerman believes that small business owners can increase business if they become more aggressive about staying ahead of the competition.

"Consider these three points: value, cost and volume," he says. more

Penang nasi kandar business plummets after SMS called for boycott

A malicious SMS spreading around Penang, urging Penangites to boycott their favourite nasi kandar stalls and restaurants, have caused business in the state to plummet. The SMS had accused nasi kandar operators of backing Umnos illegal gathering to protest the Penang Governments move not to carry out the New Economic Policy.

Malaysia Muslim Restaurant Operators Association president Sihabutheen Sirudu Mohamad said today members' businesses had been badly affected by the SMS.

The public, he said, had the wrong information by claiming that nasi kandar restaurant workers were involved in the illegal gathering.

"We lost customers, most notably the Chinese, he said. "I hope the public will not believe in such rumours being spread by those who are irresponsible."

Meanwhile, the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) denied urging the boycott, condemning those responsible for trying to take advantage and accusing the organisation of spreading the boycott call. more
