'Mom-Preneur' Finds Big Success With Little Sweets

She is an entrepreneur, wife and mother of three.

"Every day after school, when I would come home and bake brownies and I lived in a high-rise apartment at the time and I'd pass them out to my neighbors because I had so many I couldn't eat them all myself," she said.

King made a lot of friends and now makes money at it.

She has been featured in Entrepreneur Magazine and when her company was called Creative Brownie, she had Matt Lauer chatting up her brownies.

She's also been on the Food Network twice. But it wasn't always easy.

At one point, King had to sell her business.

"I went through a divorce and the first thing that went through my mind was, 'I've got to take care of my kids and I will not miss anything for them,'" she said. more

Authorities bust man for growing pot

Authorities charged Jeremy Richard Barnes, 27, of the 9500 block of Stoney Hill Church Road with possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, felony possession of cocaine, maintaining a dwelling for the keeping and storage of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to Nash deputies, Barnes is on probation for a prior offense.

A search of his home revealed a "sophisticated indoor marijuana grow which was active and in the process of producing marijuana plants," officials from the Nash County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

During the search, 110 grams of marijuana, one gram of cocaine, $729 in cash and various paraphernalia used to grow marijuana also was found and confiscated by authorities. more

Interview: Driving towards the 100-mpg car

John Shore, the Auto X Prize competition's senior director and previously a US Navy research physicist and software entrepreneur told Max Glaskin about his hopes for the new contest and how the winners will be decided.

How will you judge the success of the Auto X Prize?

The criteria for our success will be how much investment is put into alternative, super-efficient vehicles and innovative drive trains and the like, and to what extent the market is changed in the next five to 10 years.

Did some of these X Prize vehicles reach the market, did some of the technology get acquired and get fielded in other people's vehicles, did some of the companies get acquired?

You cite the Orteig Prize awarded for the first non-stop transatlantic flight in 1927 as an influence, saying it stimulated the aviation industry. more

Online entrepreneur cashes in on rising fuel prices

The eco-entrepreneurs are also jovial. Lord Jamie Borwick runs Modec, the £9m-turnover zero-emission light commercial vehicle manufacturer. With van drivers now paying out an average £1,250 extra a year on diesel compared to 2007, Borwick’s £30,000-a-pop vehicles suddenly look like an attractive investment. Sales this year are set to jump to a stonking £50m.

"We’re one of the few companies that are immune to fuel prices," he says.

That doesn’t mean he’s impressed with Brown’s proposed 2p rise in fuel duty.

"The last thing a government should do is increase taxes when there’s a recession. That’s effectively what it’s doing.

"Brown is urging the British public to cut spend. more

Voting Question: Guys what would you prefer?? Quick question, 10 pnts for best!?

Tonight I am planning a special surprise for my fiancee. He just started his own business and is getting back from a hard day of buggering labour. I am making him a fancy dinner with white wine and am planning on surprising him. I brought out the footon matress to the living room floor and am laying a soft tiger blanket over it and gonna light candles and all that stuff and have dinner on there, do you think that is too overboard? So my question is...... I am planning on wearing lingerie for him. Would you like it better if you found your girl waiting for you in it when you got off work, or would you prefer to eat dinner first then have her surprise it with you for dessert?? And would you prefer to eat dinner at the table or on the living room floor at the coffee table? more

Resolved Question: Husband lost a good chuck of money on a business, I am very upset?

I don't know if he got careless or what. But this is how we handle our finances. I have my own savings account, he has his and we have a joint savings/checking account. I don't really know the amount he has or he knows what I have. But he lost his job last February he worked his way all the way up to VP of operations, this was a small company that made candles there was 40 employees. My husband did not see the owners selling the company and closing the company. Everyone lost there jobs, my husband worked there for 10 years first job out of college. It was real hard on him, he started to look for jobs hard core but got very discouraged until May. In May thanks to face book a old college buddy "The Chad" looked him up. Last time he talked to "The Chad" was our wedding that he was a groomsmen 6 years ago. My husband was in "the Chads" wedding 6 months before ours. My husband tried to stay in contact but he never would return calls. My husband was so excited to hear from "The Chad" right away Chad asked my husband to meet him at a certain location. My husband thought it was to meet at a bar or something but it was a office complex. Well my husband meet Chad but got pitched for a going into a business with Chad as he is unemployed too. The business was for selling Travel packages. After that meeting my husband and "The Chad" where working out of Chads home with this business. I did not ask many questions but was kind of fishy. I know my husband and "The Chad" where best buddies in college but Chad never finished college I guess he just partied all the time. Last month my husband was pale and sitting around. He told me that there business failed and he lost 30k out of his savings, he thinks The Chad wife fixed the books and took most of the money from the business. He feels really betrayed that his buddy screwed him. I feel it is his money in his savings account but upset that he feel for this as he is too smart. Apparently he tries to call "the Chad" he changed his cell #. I do know that this Chad worked for one of those sub prime leding banks that got introuble and made 6 figure salaries 3-6 years ago where he has a huge house "lost in foreclousure" nice cars. I dont know what to do with my husband support him or show that I am upset.. more

Voting Question: continued My wife filed a false PPO then Assault charges to keep me from my son when I told her I divorcin her?

I had to put a second post up just to thank everyone for the help and advice. My love for Gavin is D only reason I've stayed strong and not be totally destroyed over all she is putting me through to get leverage for custody because I was the primary care giver and a law abiding man with no record either to make me not divorce her or release her vengence for me daring to want to divorce her. I started an ad business right away for quick money & a regular job 2 weeks later so rent due 3 days after she left was paid and food was in the fridge and gas was in the tank. She had it all in her name so my bank card was canncelled, car ins. health ins. through her work, my cell phone, and anything else she paid for was cut off but she was controlling and abusive with money since I started being the "house husband" (not when I made all the money or supported her while she did her unpaid internship for a year and up to when we had our son) so I don't want anything from her ever again & will prove I can support my son very well and notonly give him what money can buy but all that is priceless and worth more than any money. I actually never saw this coming though even though she said I would never see him again if I divorced her because I didn't know you could just make up anything and could actually get someone thrown in jail with no proof because all she said was passive stuff other that saying I threw a candle at her how she gota PPO keepingme from him too) while holding our son (like she would ever hold him) and "sheltering him" taking the blow on the shoulder (but mysteriously...no marks) but with the father I am to Gavin, I never would have imagined she would really keep a child from a father as attentive and loving as I am. There is a huge shortage of that in this country and she is hurting him doing this because I raised him and spent every second with him the 7 months of his life because the hour or two she would spend with him, I was always there and still the one holding him, changing diapers, feeding him, etc. and there is no way she doesn't consciously realize she is hurting our son at the expense of hurting me. I am going to post a question regarding legal advice on stealing everything of mine the day she had me arrested because she took alot from my car that was locked in my garage so that must protect me somehow but the cop thats buddies w her dad said we are married so I cant get anything back till the divorce procedure. They setup to arrest me when her dad came over to get her stuff a couple weeks after she left with my son that night I told her I was divorcing her( when he came, I said of course and started bring her stuff to the front of the garage like an idiot) & I know she arrived later because she went through my DVD's taking EVERY SINGLE backup copy of video and pictures of our son when I made 8 or so copies so I would never lose them and along with that, she took my laptop that had it all on the hard drive and my hard-drive camera that had it all on there including his birth and proof that I am the one in every video playing with our son or holding him and sadlythe only footage of the second born grandson in the family's birth, my younger brother's sons video footage got in her hands (my neighbor saw her take all my stuff out along with my parents and friends property) She even took pics of Gavin I printed and hung up on my wall after she left cuz I missed him & wanted to see him in someway. Its just more of her control or vengence but I never thought I would spend the night in jail especially for domestic violence. I had daily migraines but stayed up w him ALL NIGHT when he was colic the first few months but would put on a smile cuz children react to your mood & he deserves to be happy not miserable just because daddy was in pain & he was so happy too so nothing would ever make me do what she said if the horrible pain of my migraines wouldn't even let me show pain let alone frustration toward my son for my problems (like my abusive wife) I wouldn't even let us argue around him but vent and let out agression in text msg cuz he was always around but she said I yelled, kicked stuff & "Gavin was cryin the whole time I did all that. BTW If anyone knows anyone that could help me further somehow, I don't mind a million people forwarding it to a million more. She told the public that I am some piece of crap child abuser so I will not protect what she does from even the public let alone my famaily anymore. I want to write a movie about all this anyway so more people are aware of some women abusing the system like this so not one other dedicated and loving husband and father never goes through what I am, so it wouldn't hurt to ask and whoever helps would get recognition for not letting her get away with this because to tell you the truth, I am scared to death she gets away with it and does exactly what she threatened and keeps him from me especially at such a crutial age and stages of his life because m more

Resolved Question: Was this a big deal (not really cheating)?

My girlfriend went out of town on a business trip and I had one of our common friends over (a woman) to review content for a website. My girlfriend knew this was going to happen because I OK'd it with her. She said everything was cool. The problem was that the friend had to postpone the meeting and came over at dinner time instead of 14:00. I was starving and I had been craving a good home-cooked meal(Duck in a truffle sauce with Spätzle and rocket salad, to be exact) so I started cooking then I was running late, so when she arrived I just had her help me finish making and share the meal. We didn't flirt or anything. She was outta there before it got late and everything. Why was it such a big deal? It's not as if it was a candle-lit dinner or anything.Very important: I didn't invite anyone over "for diner". The guest showed up at dinner time. I wasn't going to not offer to share. And my stomach waits for no one. Hence we ate together. Dessert was Tim-Tams out of the packet. more

Resolved Question: heres a little something to lighten the mood!?

my husband and i bought 'the clapper' a couple weeks ago. it kinda sucks because you have to clap four - seven times to get the darn thing to turn on. ironically, our 5 1/2 month old makes it turn on by crying or jumping in his jumper. its so cute! anyway...so we are trying to conceive. well a couple days ago, we lit the fire place, lit some candles, and were getting down to business. it started to get a little rough and all of a sudden the clapper turned on the light! lol. whats something funny that happened with your husband or wife lately? more

Resolved Question: Need a name for a home made candle business, any suggestions?

I'm thinking of starting a candle shop, either in person or online, and am trying to think of some cutesy, simple ideas, instead of just adding my name to the word "candles." Anyone have any ideas that can set me off on the right foot? more

Voting Question: Starting a Home Based business?

I am starting my own home based business. I will have crochet item such as blankets, scarves, belts, pillows. I sew blankets and pillows. I also make candles, bath and body care products. Any suggestions on what I should call it? more

Voting Question: A special place to go to when you write?

This is my first question on YA, so be kind, please! I've talked to a few writer friends and read a few books, and most if not all agree that there is one place that, more often than not, they retreat to when they write: powerful ley lines intersect there, there's special about the coffee there, or maybe the couch that's there is really comfortable. Whatever the reason, there is always that one spot where the writing gets done. Alternatively or perhaps in conjunction, other people have made known to me that they have a certain ritual that must be performed before they can start: lining up the pencils just right, lighting a candle or two, listening to "Lowrider" to set the mood...whatever :) So I'm opening this up to writers on YA: do you have a certain place you go to when you write, and/or do you engage in certain rituals/habits/practices before getting down to business? To get the action going, I'll put down a blind: I usually work from my laptop, and coffee certainly greases my wheels. If there is an empty table at the coffee shop, I often take it, but if not I head home and work from the collapsible card table with all my school stuff on it piled up or pushed aside. The action now passes to you! It would be greatly appreciated if you would exercise some care with grammar, punctuation, and at least *try* to rein in the profanity or vulgarity. Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: Would you call this a true friend?

There is this girl that I became friends with, she would call me just about everyday. Well I started a candle business, I put alot of time, money and 2 months of research finding the best wholesale prices. Well one day she said "I'm just going to come out and and ask you" Would you get mad if I started making candles? By the way I make soy candles, she said she was going to make Gel candles. Anyway I told her no, then she would call me and try to get information out of me about making candles, she lives not 5 minutes from me, we live in a rural area, very small town by the way. anyway I would give her some information but I was not going to just give out all the information that took me two months to research, of course she did not know that. Then all of the sudden she up and quit calling me, then I saw her at a store and she acted funny towards me, like she did not have much to say, so I thought oh well screw you then. Well sure enough she started making the soy candles. What do you think about this? To me a true friend would have supported me in my business not try and be my compitition in this small town. Oh well, we went 10 months without talking to each other, then last saturday I had a inside yard sale in an old store building that we own, and my first customer was her! I told her I was selling my candle equipment and she ended up buying it all, which was fine with me, I could not make them anymore because I had feet problems and could not stand for that long. Well now she is trying to be friends with me again, but I cannot get rid of these feelings towards her and what she did to me. Just wandering if you think I should trust her agian? Should I tell her what I really think? more

I am starting a business selling handmade clothing, clothing accessories and other things (such as candles, hand made home goods etc.). I need to come up with a clever name for it. Me and the co-owners of the business were thinking about incorperating 3 Js into the name because all of our first names start with J- Jet(Jannelle), Jamie, and Jen. We don't have to use this idea, we just want something fun and creative. Any suggestions are appreciated! 10pts goes to the best answer, and we might even use the idea for the name! thanks a lot! more

Resolved Question: What do you think of this story?

the story starts at this addresshttp://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?... Harry and Ron had volunteered to walk her down, both praising her brave attempt at saving Harry and commiserating with her about the unfairness of their Head of House in sending one of her poor lambs to slaughter in the dungeons. But Hermione wanted to do this alone. She didn’t want either of her new friends to see her fear, or to be lurking near the office to overhear her getting yelled at. She knew Professor Snape would yell. She could handle shouting, even though her parents were quiet people and never raised their voice to their only child. In fact, they hardly ever had any need to punish her in any way. If they did, a few words of reprimand were enough to reduce her to tears and promises to do better. Taking a deep breath and summoning all her courage, Hermione purposely strode past the classroom door and paused at the next door down the dim corridor. The large door was made of dark wood and had an ornate brass handle in the form of a snake. A yellowed parchment stuck to the door just above her head, announcing Snape’s office hours in his cramped, distinctive scrawl. Timidly, Hermione raised her hand and knocked softly on the door. Perhaps he won’t hear me...perhaps he’s not here...perhaps he’s been sucked away by aliens... “Enter.” came the deep voice of her professor. Gingerly, the girl pushed the door open and stepped inside. The professor was sitting at his desk, the office surprisingly brightly lit with several candles placed around the room. His quill poised above parchment, he raised a brow and what looked like surprise flitted across his face. “Miss Granger. To what do I owe this...intrusion?” O Mary, Mother of God, help me now in this my hour of need ...Her childhood catechism echoed in her brain...”Ummm” “Eloquent as ever, Miss Granger. State your business or leave, I am a busy man” He tipped his head and stared at her appraisingly. “I...um...I...I have something to confess” There, she’d said it and she definitely had his attention now. Snape sat further upright in his chair. “ What could an innocent young Gryffindor, like yourself, possibly have to confess to the Head of Slytherin House..?” I really hate the way he over-enunciates when he’s being sarcastic...”Well, you see, Sir, this afternoon..you know, when something happened to Harry’s broom...” “Go on.” The words seemed to hang ominously in the thick dungeon air. Hermione was finding it hard to breathe. “Well, I know it was wrong of me, and I’m really sorry, but you see, I was desperate, and it looked, well it looked to me like, like youwerehexingHarry’sbroom andsoIsnuckaroundand setfiretoyourrobes” The words tumbled out on top of one another and Hermione felt she would collapse with the effort. Silence. Hermione kept her eyes resolutely glued to the floor, her heart beating a rapid staccato in her chest. More silence. Hermione dared to take a quick peek up at her professor. He was sitting very still at his desk, except for the tiny muscle twitching at the corner of his eye. Abruptly he cleared his throat. Hermione jumped. “Let me attempt to clarify this...confession” His voice was quiet, but hard. “ You, in all your Gryffindor wisdom, rapidly assessed the situation when Mr Potter’s broom began cavorting in an erratic manner, decided that the perpetrator was me, and set fire to my robes in an attempt to rectify the situation.” Hermione swallowed, and nodded, her face flushing under his intense scrutiny. “I think Professor McGonagall should be involved in this scintillating discussion” Snape rose from his desk in one fluid movement, causing his student to step back quickly and stammer, “She-she already knows! S-Sir.” Quailing inside but pushing herself, Hermione went on, breathing quickly. “She saw me. Professor McGonagall, I mean. When I lit your robes on fire. Sir.” Her cheeks burned. “She took m-me to her office and said that I was to come down here and explain to you. And to-“ Hermione’s stomach threatened to hurl, “to ask for your forgiveness, and-“ At this point she was certain she was going to sick up. She could feel it, climbing up her esophagus with acidic fingers. A glance at his stony face was like a splash of cold water and she was able to whisper, “And to submit to whatever punishment you wish to give me.” Silence. Hermione looked everywhere but at her professor, waiting for the bomb to blow. “Professor McGonagall said this?” His deep voice sounded mocking, disbelieving. “She gave me this note for you.” Hermione fumbled in her pocket and drew out the wrinkled note. Snape reached out his hand but made no move toward her. Slowly, she inched forward and placed it in his open palm, the note a small splash of white on the calloused skin. Scampering back to her place closer to the door, Hermione heard the parchment crinkle. Silence. Sweathttp://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090518222905AA0NZST&r=w story countinues more
