Innovation is the key theme, as Computing Business investigates

Welcome to the twenty-second issue of Computing Business, the monthly magazine for IT leaders.

Computing Business is designed for senior executives at the forefront of technology-enabled change in UK companies and the public sector.

Chief information officers are increasingly expected to develop the business, technology, leadership and personal skills needed to make an effective contribution to decision-making in the boardroom. Computing Business aims to help its readers take that step.

Diesel price forces bus operator to cut business

A Scottish bus company is giving up more than £1m worth of contracts on rural routes because of the soaring cost of diesel.

Munro's of Jedburgh says it is no longer viable to operate the services because of the inflated fuel prices. It has given three months' notice to Scottish Borders Council that it no longer wants to fulfil the contracts.

The company intends to re-tender for the journeys between Edinburgh and Kelso and Jedburgh and also the Galashiels to Berwick route, taking into account fuel costs.

It's as if Nelson could just walk on in at any minute.

But the hard truth is always with Angela. more

Continue to market business in downturn

When the economy starts to falter, businesses naturally rush to cut expenses, and the marketing budget often winds up on the chopping block. But experts say a downturn is the time to re- evaluate, shift and even beef up your marketing efforts.

"The smart business owner continues to market in good times and bad. It's easier in good times but more important in bad times," said Bill Andres, founder of Andres Associates Public Relations and Media in Phoenix. "Companies that keep their names in the public eye during a downturn are more likely to be perceived as successful, enduring and solid."

A strong marketing strategy will pay off in the future, said Steve Roberts, co-founder of New Angle Media in Phoenix. "It should be considered part of the basics of running a business," he said. more
