Political Skills for Business Leaders

The role of business leaders is to influence others and give direction. To do this, their actions must be grounded in self awareness, confidence and creativity, and their engagement with others must empower and motivate. Such leaders enable growth and value creation.

It is important to recognise, however, that not everyone acts with integrity or is motivated by the greater interests of the members and stakeholders of the organisation. There are always those who believe that if they are to win, others must lose and who, consciously or unconsciously, seek to dominate and / or manipulate others. Equally, there are many in organisations who, thorough lack of interpersonal awareness, astuteness or assertiveness, serve as easy prey to their more politically cunning and manipulative colleagues. more

Starting A Business Canada Questions asked

Open Question: how do i pay myself from my corporation?

I own a cleaning business in Canada with a friend and it is incorporated. We each own 50%. It is only the 2 of us that work for ourselves. When we first started out, we just collected the money and split it. I know this isn't right. We are strapped for cash and don't want to hire an accountant until we have more cashflow so I am bookkeeping with help from some books. The only thing I can't figure out is how to pay ourselves the right way. Do we hire ourselves as employees and make all the deductions or is there a way to avoid all the payroll stuff and just put money aside for income taxes? I was reading on the CRA website and it's looking like we need a payroll number and we need to pay ourselves as employees and do the mandatory deductions. more

Resolved Question: What career path do you think will earn me the most money???

I'm a Canadian residing in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada. After high school, I'm enrolling in a B.com (bachelor of commerce) program at the University of Alberta. My major will be accounting and my minor will be finance. After University, I will be pursuing a CA (Chartered Accountant) designation. I will spend a couple years working as an tax accountant/auditor. After experience as an accountant, I will be pursuing a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst). When I obtain this designation, I may either i) Start an accounting practice, ii) Work as a CFA for a few years then start an investment firm or iii) Start working in the public sector. I plan on becoming a careerist and making a truck load of money. Either way, by the time I feel like I'm ready, with my wealth and business connections, I plan on starting a venture capital firm. FYI these are the only areas of business that I'm savvy in. It's to late for me to become a software tycoon or whatever. In addition, I am not naive. I have a very good idea of what I want to do and I would like to hear some intelligent input on this issue Danke more

Open Question: Can revenue Canada seize my bank account for my husbands debt?

I moved to Canad from the states back in October 2009. I opened a bank account completely separate from my husband. He owes about $25,000 in taxes to Revenue Canada. He was making payments until last summer when he lost his job. Since he couldn't find work, he was living off his credit cards. Revenue Canada contacted him when he stopped making payments and he let them know about the situation. They sent him some paperwork he filled out and out of good faith he made a $100 payment and told them he would pay more when he could. When I moved here we didn't think I would have any problems finding work, but even after almost 6 months I was only able to get a month seasonal job during Christmas, otherwise no one will even give me an interview. In the meantime my husband has started a small business that just barely covers our monthly living expenses (this was back in December). At the same time he received a letter from Revenue Canada stating if he didn't fill out this form that authorized them to pry into every nook and cranny of our lives for the past 10 years, they would proceed with legal action. Since it was Christmas we couldn't get an appointment to see an attorney to find out what our options were so he sent a letter to Revenue Canada asking them for an additional 30 days to consult a lawyer and he would get back to them. After talking to the lawyer, my husband make several attempts to contact Revenue Canada. never hearing back or being able to get a hold of the person he was dealing with. Before we knew it, they seized his bank account and took what little money that was in it. Miraculously when he called Revenue Canada to find out what happened he got a hold of the guy and he told him basically any money that goes in Revenue Canada will take and they were proceeding with legal actions. When he told him he kept trying to get in contact with him, the guy played dumb like he never got any of his messages. So my questions are 1) what are our options? We can negotiate a payment plan but there is no way we can pay off all the debt in 2 years like they want especially since I can't get anyone to hire me. and 2) can revenue Canada seize my bank accounts as well even though it is solely my account and not a joint account? Thanks ahead of time! more

Open Question: Divorced business owner issues T4 to Ex for division of maritial assest in which the business was included-?

confusion caused the first time this was asked : Mr + Mrs T own a business, home, cars ect. They divorce and the husband signs buy out agreement so that Mrs. T can retain the business, home and other shared assets. Mrs. T cannot afford to pay out Mr. T all at once so an agreement is drawn up that she is to make monthy payments of a set amount on the 15 day of each month for one year on the condition that Mr. T leaves town before the payments start. He agrees and signs. The payout ends in July 2009 and Mr T then recieves in the mail the following Feb a T4 for the exact amount of the buyout. After aquiring the financial statements from the accountant Mrs. T has recorded these payments to Mr. T as "bonus" and then in another area as 'wages". Only the most minimal amounts in the required boxes are filled out leaving Mr. T a HUGE potential bill with Revenue Canada as the T4 was for over $60,000.00. It is understood that it was done to lower the business taxable profits. The Complaint has been filed with copies of all of the evidence. Would RCA charge Mrs. T for fraud? Jail? Fine? What is the procedure now that RCA does and do you think Mr T needs a lawyer to sue as well? more

Resolved Question: I'm stuck in a rut and I don't know what to do?

I'm 25 years old and I graduated from university 2 years ago. I work in insurance sales at the moment but it's not where I want to be. I find the job boring, tedious and unrewarding. Since university, I have applied to many graduate work schemes but I simply have no desire for them. I have a good degree in International Business and German. Also, I have worked since I was 16 in sales and I've just about had enough of it. I simply feel I'm not progressing in life. I want to make a go out of a singing career. I have a good voice and I was in a band a few years ago at university but it didn't work out. I put that plan on hold for a couple of years and want to reignite the dream! I also want to leave my country (UK) and go somewhere like Canada to make a fresh start. However, I have no idea where to start. It just feels like whenever I get a new job, I'm always right back to where I started in life with my last job. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. . more

Resolved Question: Is this a fake landlord? Am I being scammed?

Okay, so I saw a craigslist ad for a townhome for rent. I told my hubby about it and it was all good. Then we visited and still thought nothing of it. Then we noticed how much he expressed that he needed to do a credit check but needed US to get the credit report for him because according to him, they made a privacy act where he wouldn't be able to view it. Strange... because in our previous apartments, we didn't have to get anything. We found that quite strange. Then we looked at the application he gave us and it asked for not only our bank account number, but our CREDIT CARD NUMBER and the expiration date! What in the world is going on here? I don't feel comfortable anymore. He did show us the interior and exterior of the place so I don't know how in the world he got the keys. Also, at first, he had a local number, but the second time he called, he called me from a different area code and I looked up the area code and it was from CANADA. :O My gosh, I mean, maybe he's just helping someone out. Maybe he just doesn't now what he's doing. Maybe he's being extra careful but there is no way in the world I'm giving that man my credit card # and the expiration date. He also cannot be found anywhere online when I googled both his phone numbers and his name. On the application it doesn't list a company, it merely lists his name and a fax number on the application. He didn't even seem to have a business card and didn't even express what he did for a living, or if he's rented out before, etc. There was a brochure in the townhome he let us have that had a real estate lady's name and number on it. (I saw another townhome in the same area but that one was better. The man actually had a business card, the company name was on the application, he knew real estate agents in the area, it was more of a better feeling for myself.) This guy is from Canada apparently, I do not feel comfortable with him at all. So I would probably be setting myself up for a scam if i pursue, correct? "Duh"s are welcome lol. I do plan on renting a townhome, but I'm not about to risk getting scammed. All I can do now is just keep trying to contact a real estate agent and see if this guy is legit. Even if she says he is, I don't think it's worth dealing with him anymore. Especially since I or my spouse, don't feel comfortable. I did contact the real estate lady and she said that he was the owner of the home and said I was smart to call her. She also said to check tax records if I want to verify and said that people have called her before and asked her if it was a scam. But it was strange that I called her more than once and she only returned my call when I left a message, claiming she just got out of church even though its like 9:20am and a lot of churches around here don't even start till around this time even 10 or 11 am. I just don't feel comfortble anymore. If he is legit, then why does he need my credit card number? Why isn't his phone number on the application? and why can't he access my credit records on his own? Ugh. :P more

Voting Question: Cardiology / Cardiologists?

I'm a sophomore high school student in Toronto, Canada and I've started thinking about where I want to head in terms of a career/job. I'm interested in internal medicine, specifically non-invasive cardiology and have a few questions: - What courses should I be taking in grade 11 and 12? - In university, what courses should I look out for if I'm looking to study non-invasive cardiology later on? - How many years of study does it take to become a non-invasive cardiologist in Canada? I know there is 4 years of pre-med school (that's university right?) but what after that? - How much is the total costs of studies around? If I'm not planning on moving to another city? - Do non-invasive cardiologists work in hospitals/ clinics or do they usually open their own clinic/ business? more

Resolved Question: Now what do I do in this situation?

I hate my life. My "Mom" ignores my phone calls and she doesn't want to talk to me. When I was 15 I moved from Mississauga Ontario to Algeria. I was born in October 6,1992 in Toronto Ontario Canada. I am a Canadian citizen. Now I still don't understand, I haven't seen my family for nearly 3 years and I have this rage inside me where I am about to explode. I feel like no one loves me, ever since I moved here, I lived 2 years with my grandma and until up to 4 months ago where I moved to the capital of Algeria and my Dad and I now live alone. I hate my family, they are all nothing but liars. My DAD lies in my face, same with my MOM and they force my siblings to lie to me. So no one will be honest with me, my DAD leaves Algeria and goes to Canada every Friday and usually comes back Monday or Tuesday. So I seriously don't get it, he said the only reason he is living here is for me. He thinks Canada is not good for me in some way which I don't even understand. When I ask him he always uses the excuse that I was not listening to him in Canada, and wanted to join a gang, get my ears pierced and so on. My MOM starts yelling at me when I tell her I know my DAD is in Canada. I rarely get to go outside, my DAD doesn't trust me to let me out for more than 5 minutes. I am 17 and he treats me like a kid. I don't know where to turn. He keeps telling me I am worried about you and if you leave I will cry a river of tears. I really don't like it when people lie to me and when I told my MOM she was like "We are not people" thank who the f are they if they are not people? She was like "We are your parents". Now I have this rage inside me, I don't know what to do. My Dad says when I am ready I can go back to Canada. Ready for what? Should I just apply for my birth certificate and Canadian passport? And than go to America when I am 18? I have started a business a week ago and have reached $300 USD profit. Should I keep on saving up? My parents wont buy me anything. And I mean no clothes, no electronics or anything. My Dad yells at me, same with my MOM, My brother who is 21 I hate him so much. He gets everything, he has a car, lives a great life with my 10 other siblings. And I am the 3rd oldest in the family so NO I am not the youngest. I have a brother who is 3 years and a half, a sister who is 1 year old and the list goes on.What I do not understand is why they think Algeria will be better for me. It's worse, when I cam here is when I started to drink, date, have sex and the list goes on. Any Ideas? Please be honest and not mean. more

I am so confused. Someone please help me here. Thanks in advance! Resolved Question: What do I do in this situation?

Voting Question: What should I do after high school?

I'm currently in my GR11 year and starting to think about what I want to do as a career. I love cars have an absolute passion for them expecially Mercedes Benz. I've grown up with them and currently own 2 of there vehicles also I work for the Mercedes dealership as a detailer. Then again I find history and law very interesting which made me lead onto being a lawyer. Only thing is schooling is 7 years here in Canada. Which brought me to my next thought of going into business. I have cousins managing resturants, he said I could shadow him for a day just I'm not sure if I necessarily want to manage food. A little input would be great guys. more

Resolved Question: How does my composting business look? Is it possible?

Heres the price: One time start up fee: 50 Canadain (Cause I live in Canada)/ First month is included in price, You get a Green bin (size of recycle bin) for the outside, a green pale (size of a bathroom garbage can) for the inside of your home, compostable bags will be provided each month for the bins. 15 dollar per month: To cover labour (pickup), bags for the bins, etc. So at the end of the day you throw your compost pal into your bigger bin outside and every 2 weeks an employee will come pick it up. Smell would not be a problem, neither would animals as we got it covered as the bins we use are good. Many people are telling me they won't pay 15 per month, but thats the cheapest i can go, as it takes 12.83 dollars in expenses for each customer, and of course thats not including the land i have to provide, which would prob eat up my profit. Maybe i could charge 20 dollars? would that be to much though? how can i fine tune this? I've been wrapping my mind on this thing along time more

Voting Question: I'm being held here in the states by my husband and I want to go home to Canada.?

Now before you all start jumping up and down, yelling, 'You've got to be kidding!' or 'Must be your own fault!' let me explain how I got here. I'm a fifty-five year old Canadian woman. I've been married for the last 30 years or so to my second husband, have three daughters and 2 grandsons. Two of the girls live near me in the United States. My eldest is in Canada, with her husband and their boys. I have been here for twenty years, moving where my husband's job moved. We had 2 farms in Canada. We went into business with my son-in-law and eventually lost everything. The business went under last year; mad cow, recession etc. My husband had my son-in-law using tax right offs up there, while he opened a Business account and wrote off the farms. He's a Marine Manager and makes a hell of a good salary. He blamed the son-in-law, the governments, me, everyone but hime. I understood what was happening and felt I owed everything to him, for he had put up with me all those years. After seven years of marriage, and thanks to my husband (he saw a story about it on tv and said 'hey that's you and your crazy father) I went to my doctor, who diagnosed me and a sent me to a psychiatrist. I am bi-polar. I accepted this and wanted more than anything for the meds and therapy to work. After years of therapy, I became well, balanced and on my meds. That hasn't changed. My husband calls me crazy everytime I stand up to him. What I didn't know at the time was that my husband is a controller. He does the shopping, decides where we are to spend every week end, tells me when to go to bed and when to get up. He is a born, British subject, a nationalized Canadian citazen and now, an American citazen. He has me down here, no green card, no citizenship, and a Canadian passport due to run out in August. I don't know where to begin searching for help. I left him once before and spent a year living on my own, filing for divorce, in Canada. Then I found out I have no rights, at least with me up there and him living down here in Texas. I did not know he was going to leave me with no way to get home. I told him I wasn't coming down to be his housekeeper. I was wrong on both counts. I have no rights to file for divorce down here. I'm down here illegally. He has told the government nothing about my being here. He has, in fact, scolded me many times that it was my fault I had no green card as I believed a border guard who told me I had to spend six months and one day down in the states, less than six months in Canada. We had two farms in Canada and I had my own home and yet I gave up my card. Of course, to my husband, I'd been foolish and should have just lied. Though a florist, I have no job because I have no green card. I have no money except for the credit card he allows me to use, always near the limit, which he can access and watch every transaction I make. Yes, I do have family in Canada. Do you know how difficult it is to ask them to help when I know they don't have any money? I know I should find a way, but I don't know how. I'm beginning to believe him when he says 'i'm the crazy one.' Yes, I have a pschyitrist down here (Texas) and a family doctor, but he is so good at making himself the victem and I'm so tired of being called crazy. When I was in Canada last, two of my daughters told doctors how my husband had scary anger issues. They were wasting their breath. Now that you've read this far, I don't need to know how I've made the wrong choices. I just want to know how to go home. Any kind of info would help. more

Resolved Question: is it worth living in the philippines?

I have been in Canada for 16 yrs. now. I have gone back to the philippines twice in the last 2 years. I went back Dec. 2009 to marry my fiance. I was thinking to just leave Canada and live in the philippines for good. Life there is so laid back and simple. Not too much pressure like here. All we do is work and then go home. Will it be hard for me to find a job or start a business there? Should I wait til my husband becomes a citizen and try to live there and if we don't like it come back to Canada?i'm still young so it is still a long way til i retire. the one reason i want to go back is the lifestyle especially in the province. it is very laid back and i love the people there. we can afford to live there because my husband is a seaman but that means he will be gone all the time and but i don't want that. more

Resolved Question: [ONTARIO, CANADA] BUSINESS EXPERTS and/or LAWYERS: Is there a way to start a company that offers...?

...shares to private investors so that they can earn a percentage or dividend (paid periodically) from the company's profits? So investors that "I" choose can buy stocks in my company and make some money when the company makes a profit. So it would be SIMILAR to a publicly traded stock on a LOCAL and/or PRIVATE stock exchange (if one should exist). Where potential investors are chosen so that no one can manipulate the price of the stock or the value of the company by making "put" and/or "call" options or selling "derivatives" or anything like that. more

Resolved Question: Any thoughts or comments about this dream...?

I don't know why, but I was in one of those prefab office park buildings. It was something like my wife was in front taking care of some sort of business and I wanted a cigarette. A guy offered to take me into his office and I could smoke in there because of its construction. The ceiling was high and vaulted with bare steel rafters overhead (where the smoke was to go apparently). There were all these machines around, something that looked like a radar and another that looked a seismograph or something steady making squiggly lines on a paper graph as it rolled by. On the wall was a large map of the United States. SO, I had to ask about the kind of work that they do. One of the guys stepped up to the map and began to explain the unusual weather patterns we have seen this year. The cold blasts down from the North West (Canada) and then warm air moves in from the South East out of Mexico. "So it's creating this pattern of weather disturbances like this," and he took out a black marker and slashed lines like a diconnected zig-zag down the middle of the States map. "We don't know how to explain this," he said. I crossed my arms and studied the map. Then I started saying how the earth revolves around the sun and then the earth also turns on its axis. Also -- as most of us know -- there is a slight wobble in the earth's rotation, which influences or in effect causes our seasons. Now it gets kind of weird or funny. I told them that for about the last 500 years now we have been taking billions of tons of coal and oil out of the earth and turning them into weightless gases by burning them. I said I believed we are throwing the weight differntial of the earth off because of this and it is effecting the wobble and that a dramatic shift looked highly probable. At that point they looked at me and began going through papers and graphs. I woke up when my wife turned on the T.V. I might not have remembered the dream except when I looked there was a map on the screen and they were talking about the weather. I'm known to be eccentic at best, weird to the most and when I dream the dreams are usually vivid and strange. Still, this one is out there even for me. What do you think about it all? more

Resolved Question: Whats the deal with real estate?

Is the real estate business the same as it used to be (1980-90)? I'm 18 and am wondering about future career aspects. Ive considered Database Administration, commerce, or getting a bba, or marketing. I like the idea of you are as successful as you want to be type attitude. I live in Vancouver (Canada) which is like miami, where people come to that have made money to spend money. What is the life style like and how does one succeed in this area. If I started right after highschool, would I be taken seriously, or would someone pass me off as a kid. What is the typical salary, as I understand that it really does depend on how many deals you close but if your successful, the sky must be the limit correct? In the first 6 months, how do you spend your time, meet and greet, office runs? Is there one field in real estate that pays more? Can an Agent become a broker or vica versa. How many agents a year lose their jobs due to saturation. Is there any reading material that can help me? Many thanks. more

Resolved Question: Should I break ties with my family?

I am really sick of how much my parents are trying to control the direction of my life. I recently broke up with my ex-girlfriend which I had almost nothing in common with and have started a relationship with my roommate who I get along with much better. Here are just some reasons why. Me: Buddhist, computer engineering student, watches anime, vegetarian, open minded Ex: Christian, pre medicine student, watches soap operas, omnivore, close minded, arrogant Roommate: Buddhist, computer science grad student, watches anime, vegetarian, open minded, humble My parents were really pissed but for stupid reasons. Firstly parents have strong business ties with my ex girlfriend's parents and thats why I was put into this relationship in the first place. Secondly my ex is Chinese like me and my rommate is Japanese which my parents really dislike. A relationship with anyone non-Chinese is already unacceptable for them but Japanese would be considered the worst. Also my roommate is two years older than me which is somehow way older than me and my parents think that is embarassing. My parents have cut off financial support which is the only reason why I still tolerated them. My father is getting too old to run the family business and they want me to now. They want me to drop of university, come home, return to the relationship which I all find laughable. I do not want to run the family business. The pay is better than becoming a computer engineer but I would be much happier being a computer engineer. My parents call me selfish which I find ironic. My roommate owns the expensive apartment which we live in and her parents in Japan have no problems with her dating me. However my roommate tells me that her parents have the view that women should be homemakers which is why she is in Canada. She is giving me free rent under the conditions that I clean, cook and do laundry. I am thinking of just breaking ties with my family because of all the trouble they are giving me and have been in the past. As a child, I was overprotected and not allowed visit friends or go anywhere without their supervision other than school. I was not allowed to watch many shows or listen to a lot of music. In high school I was not allowed to work. I had to persuade my parents to let me study computer engineering which they are still opposed to me doing because they wanted me to go to business school and run their company. My father also hit me a lot when I came into opposition against him. My parents said if I were to ever get married with someone they disapprove of, that the entire family would boycott the wedding. Although, that is thinking a bit far ahead, just saying really angers me. I am really angry at them now and in the past and I think I should just shut them out of my life altogether. more

Resolved Question: why do i never get what i want from daddy but my sister does?

my sister and i are 20 and 21 resepectively. We are said to be spoiled. We are good looking, blond, tall and model part time, but its no big whoop to us. Our mum did it too. we are in uni. daddy has a huge firm in town. Hes good to us, i mean we each got our own little apartment and car when we started uni. but sometimes, i feel sad. I think daddy cares for my older sister more. example, he was on business to new york. I asked him for this seasons prada and i got a last season one. daddy took us to harrods recently and he ended up spending much more on my sister. well, i suppose thats coz i couldnt see anythign i really liked. But i ended up just getting sale stuff. she got loads of current season, same as my friend. ontop of that he paid for my sister and her two friends to go skying to canada for 2 weeks after xmas. however, he said if i needed a holiday my boyfriend and i would have to go with him and mum to gstaad for 10 days. thats kind of totally uncool....holidays with your parents...hellloooo. Plus we would have to live in their holiday home in gstaad, which is like totally not that big, only 3 rooms (small). So that would mean no s.x. Whys life so unfair more

Voting Question: I was served with a summons and need some help/information.Thank you for your time.?

I bought a incorporated company in aprx 2004 for the total of $1.00. I had plans to start my own business but due to life events and a lack of spare time I never bothered. I recently was served with a summons to go to court because I apparently violated the corporation tax act of Ontario Canada. When I reviewed my summons and looked up the act and the areas they said I have violated I learned that although I was not operating the company and was not making any money I am apparently still required to file a tax return because of it being incorporated. I know ignorance is not an excuse when it comes to the law but in all honesty I had totally forgotten about that business as it has been years since I had bought it and since I was not doing anything with it I simply forgot it even existed until I got this summons. About 8 months ago I received a phone call from somebody about that company and they had sent a form for me to fill out which I did and mailed it back to them. Other than that I had not heard anything from them during these periods of 2003-2004 to the tail end of 2009. I am wondering if anyone can tell me what to expect when I go to court tomorrow and if there is anything I can do to show them that yes I did make a mistake and yes I was unaware of the requirement of filing a tax return even though I was not operating the company or even using it for that matter. Is there something I can do when I go to court tomorrow that will help resolve this matter without being bombarded with penalties etc. Thanks to all of you who can help me out in this matter. This matter pertains to Ontario, Canada. Thanks again. more

Resolved Question: IS THIS WHAT WE HAVE TO LOOK FORWARD TO?

As we begin 2010, the daily news reports tell us that the economy is on the mend and indicators are suggesting that the recession is ending. In many ways, things just seem better than at the beginning of 2009. The stock market has stabilized and rebounded. Reports tell us fewer people are losing their jobs. Other reports tell us that the economy is in the early stages of a recovery. U.S. manufacturing posts modest gains. By now, we have adjusted our expectations for the future downward and reduced our spending. And the shock of the economic meltdown which we felt so keenly in January 2009 has diminished. But it is really smooth sailing ahead? Or time to batten down the hatches? Fundamental trends are under way that could create the perfect storm for further economic disaster starting as early as 2011. Just like the weather cataclysm in the book and movie "The Perfect Storm" that wrecked the fishing boat and killed all on board, these trends threaten an economic downturn much worse than we have already suffered. Four major trends crest in 2011 which threaten to drown chances of a real recovery. First, taxes. Additional tax increases are expected to go into effect in 2011 to support health care overhaul. And the Bush tax cuts will end at the start of 2011 under budget policies already adopted by the Obama administration. After these changes, the top income tax rate including state taxes would average 52% across America. That top U.S. income tax rate would be higher than in France, Germany, Canada, and 23 other countries in the OECD. In 5 states dominated by Democrats--California, New York, New Jersey, Hawaii, and Oregon--the total top tax rate will be higher than in socialist Sweden. Moreover, the top capital gains tax rate would soar by 66%, from 15% today to over 25%. The individual income tax on corporate dividends would also increase substantially. These increases will stifle investment, entrepreneurship, small business start-ups, business expansion, new jobs, wage and income growth, and overall economic recovery. The second factor affecting the economy in 2011 is rebound unemployment as stimulus spending declines. Whether or not the stimulus has been effective in preserving and creating jobs, even the Obama administration says that the effects of the stimulus spending will have peaked by mid-2010. Indeed, stimulus spending will likely produce a negative feedback effect on the economy by 2011. This is because every dollar in Keynesian stimulus spending takes an estimated $1.23 out of future GDP, according to many economists. Additional stimulus spending by Congress—like “Cash-for-Clunkers” may extend phantom job creation a bit longer, but would still produce negative effects as soon as it is spent out. Once the stimulus money is used up, state and local governments that used the funds to plug holes in their general operating budgets will have to cut back jobs or raise taxes substantially. And since most jurisdictions used the money to support levels of spending that were too high to begin with--rather than to build additional infrastructure, all that spending will not have increased American productivity much. Yet, we will still be paying the bill for today’s stimulus spending in the future, with higher interest costs and a larger tax burden. A similar effect will result from the Census Bureau hiring up to one million workers for the 2010 Census. Expect the unemployment rate to go up another 3 or 4 tenths of a percent when those same workers are laid off in 2011. The third trend that will crest in 2011 is inflation—from a combination of our weak dollar policy and our huge deficits. The dollar’s decline reflects incredibly loose Fed monetary policy, as the Fed expanded the money supply while maintaining record low interest rates near zero. In addition, federal debt will exceed 100% of GDP by 2011, leaving us with the 7th highest government debt-to-GDP ratio in the world, in company with countries such as Zimbabwe, Jamaica, and Lebanon. That will produce further dollar declines, and further increasing inflation. Lastly, if Congress passes any of the expensive legislation that it is contemplating, the resulting costs will be the fourth and final cause of the perfect storm. Cap-and-trade, health care, and pro-union legislation like “card check” would all result in huge expenditures and inefficiencies that the American people will be forced to bear--starting mostly in 2011. And in the case of cap-and-trade, energy production will be sharply constricted, and energy costs will rise--further contributing to inflation, while killing still more jobs and creating still more misery. The perfect storm in 2011 may bring us double digit inflation, soaring interest rates, record unemployment and a worsening recession. Prepare yourselves. more

Resolved Question: What to do with my money?

Hi, I have a tough situation on my hands. First, I will give a brief description of me: I moved to Canada when I was 16 For my first 2 years in Canada I had a study permit and finished my High School. In my 3rd year now as a temp citizen with my parents waiting for our permanent residence. I was planning on going to College but our papers didn't arrive on time. Now I have been sitting at home since June'08 waiting for our papers so I can actually have a life. I am not allowed to be employed or study on my visitors Visa. (We have been waiting since Aug'06) So out of boredom/frustration I recently started my online business and I do affiliate marketing. These companies I am getting paid from are mostly in the US. I have a Canadian bank account and I am using that to deposit the checks I receive. Now, I am getting worried about some legal issues. How will taxes work for me? Am I even allowed to do this? I cant see why not since I could be making this money from anywhere in the world and I'm not employed in Canada. I have been saving all of my money and I'm too scared to buy big things such as a Car due to taxes and maybe I will be asked where I got my money from? Another thing is if I had to go back to my Home Country, how will I take all of my money with me? I know there's limits for the amount of money you are allowed to carry with you when you go through customs. Will appreciate any help. more

Voting Question: Looking to make my hobby a career, and I am not sure how to get started!?

I currently work as an statistical analyst for the government. I graduated with 2 honours degrees in Business, Marketing being one of them. I have been doing Martial Arts as a competitive hobby now, for about 18 years. I have competed for the Canadian National Team for many years, and actually won 5 gold medals for Canada at the World Championships. My problem is this, I love my hobby, it's in my blood, and I am very good at it, but, I don't want to just teach for the school I train with. I want to be able to make my hobby my career. I don't know how to do this, without jumping into opening my own school. I don't even know if that is the path I really want to take. I want to take my hobby, and make it into something enjoyable! Any ideas? more
