Hanover's woes worsen as watchdog growls

The pair featured in today's National Business Review annual rich list. Mr Watson was joint-16th with $450 million, and at $200 million, Mr Hotchin was joint-40th.

A source told BusinessDay that management would work "round the clock" to ensure mum-and-dad investors recouped some or all of their investment. Also, the company had anticipated a downgrade but was "perplexed" by the Commerce Commission's intervention.

Hanover joins a wave of failed finance firms seeking moratorium agreements or restructuring plans to keep the business afloat.

St Laurence Group managing director Kevin Podmore, in Dunedin as part of a roadshow to brief investors, said the company was moving from a moratorium plan to one of recapitalisation.

St Laurence, which last month shut its lending business with $240 million owing to 9000 investors, is considering letting existing shareholders, not debenture holders, front more capital. more

Paternity leave for millions of fathers under union plans

Business leaders have already raised concerns that the plans for "flexible" parental leave, which could come in when the amount of maternity leave a woman can take rises from 39 weeks to 52 weeks in 2010, could be harmful for small businesses.

The unions will also push for mothers and fathers to be allowed paid time off for short periods if their children are ill or have stressful exams coming up.

If there proposals are accepted by Labour then they are likely to be brought in under new legislation.

While Gordon Brown is said to be determined not to give in to the entire union "shopping list," ministers are said to be prepared to agree a set of measures designed to help the work-life balance of millions of employees, and in particular the 4.5 million working parents. more

Well one day she said "I'm just going to come out and and ask you" Would you get mad if I started making candles? By the way I make soy candles, she said she was going to make Gel candles. Anyway I told her no, then she would call me and try to get information out of me about making candles, she lives not 5 minutes from me, we live in a rural area, very small town by the way. anyway I would give her some information but I was not going to just give out all the information that took me two months to research, of course she did not know that.
