Bornstein's list of identified qualities, however, misses out another essential trait that comes out so very strongly in most social entrepreneurs: building local capacities for sustainable social change. This feature calls for working with the poor and marginalised to identify their individual and collective capacities and helping them to develop those capacities. In some cases it may mean helping individuals or small groups to participate more effectively in the economy and gain easier access to the market. In other instances, it may require organising grassroots groups with a view to influence governments and policymakers. more

Inmarsat, United Utilities, Britvic: Business round-up July 25

United Utilities, Britain's largest publicly traded water company, said that current business is in line with its expectations as the utility continues to benefit from higher prices allowed by the industry regulator.

United Utilities is "confident of meeting its regulatory efficiency targets" over the next two years as laid down by the regulator Ofwat, even as energy and property rates increase, the company told shareholders today.

Britivic sees sales jump

Britvic, the company that bottles Pepsi in the UK, said sales have jumped 30pc so far this year after it bought a division of C&C and milder weather followed last summer's rainfall.

Shares in Britvic fell as much as 4.9pc after warning that its cost base is rising. Sales climbed to £690m through July 6, the company said today. more

Moog earnings up 22% Business First of Buffalo

Moog Inc. said earnings and sales each increased over 20 percent in the third quarter as the manufacturer reported growth in all of its units.

The East Aurora company said (NYSE: MOG.A and MOG.B) said Friday third-quarter earnings of $31.1 million, or 72 cents per share, up 22 percent from $25.6 million, or 59 cents per share, a year ago.

Sales climbed to $497 million, up 23 percent from $404 million in the 2007 comparable period.

Moog, in a break down of its manufacturing sectors, reported aircraft sales of $175 million were up 17 percent; commercial aircraft sales in the quarter were almost the same as a year ago. Space and defense revenues were up 33 percent to of $63 million. Industrial segment sales were very strong at $143 million, an increase of 28 percent from a year ago. more
