Senate OKs health-care bill for businesses

A bill aimed at saving a beleaguered state health-insurance program for small businesses passed the Senate on Tuesday. The bipartisan proposal would tighten financial controls over Healthcare Group, which insures nearly 23,000 self-employed Arizonans or small-business employees, while opening up the program to new members. Sole proprietors would no longer be eligible to join, but a controversial requirement that businesses be uninsured for six months before joining would be dropped. Enrollment growth of employer groups would be capped at 10 percent a year. Sen. Ken Cheuvront, a Phoenix Democrat who co-sponsored the proposal, said the changes can stop the losses the program has been grappling with while preserving it for small businesses struggling to afford health insurance for their employees. more

Asia Round Up - Japanese Large Business Confidence Dips To 6-year Low; Singapore's Annual Inflation Eases

(RTTNews) - The major news in Asia on Monday was the weakening large business confidence in the world's second largest economy, Japan. Among others, data showed that Singapore's annual inflation unexpectedly eased in February. Several economies in the region remained inactive on account of public holiday.

The latest Business Outlook Survey for the January-March period indicated that Japan's large companies showed increased pessimism over future business conditions. A report from the Ministry of Finance showed that the Business Sentiment Index fell to a six-year low of minus 9.3 in the first quarter of 2008 after a score of plus 0.5 in the final quarter of 2007.

The business sentiment index is determined by the difference between those companies that feel the economy will get worse in the coming months and those companies that feel it will get better. more

Kesa faces period of 'no growth'

Mr Labroue said sales in the past five to six weeks had been broadly flat across its businesses and had turned negative in the UK, where it operates the Comet chain, for the first time in two years. "I see this period, where we will have to face a no-growth environment, may last for some time."
