Seeking financing for your business

Finding adequate business start up money is especially critical because there's no guarantee that your business is going to make money right away, and certainly no guarantee that your new business will bring in enough money for you and your family to live on. You can't start a business without start-up capital, the total amount of money you need to open your doors for business, and to keep them open until sufficient revenue can be depended on.

Many Small Business Entrepreneurs believe that they should get one hundred percent financing from their business. Before you start your business it is imperative that you count the cost.
Successful entrepreneurs are people who are fully committed to their business ventures.

You have to be prepared to put your heart and soul into what you're doing. more

Enterprise 2.0 apps seen as useful but confusing to business

The responses reflect the fact that businesses are getting involved in using these applications in an ad hoc manner, says Carl Frappaolo , AIIM's VP of Market Intelligence. As an example, Frappaolo says that line of business departments will often adopt a blog or a wiki separately from the rest of the organization without much thought to the tools going enterprise-wide and integrating with existing platforms.

Of organization who have implemented Enterprise 2.0 technologies, nearly 45 percent said they have done so in this ad-hoc manner. A mere 26 percent of organizations have taken a strategic approach to implementing Enterprise 2.0 technologies.

The reason for this willy-nilly adoption could be that businesses have had difficulty proving the business case for the technologies. more

Start An Online Learning Business Questions asked

Open Question: Can someone recommend courses in web design?

I am 19 years of age and am looking to start a small business in retail, however, although no novice, I haven't good too much experience in web design. I wish to be able to build fully functional websites using CSS and XHTML, or whatever it is that can build Visually Pleasing websites. I also wish to create eBay shop layouts, of the same professional standard as the sites i wish to build. I live in England, UK. Any ideas what I could do? Are there online courses? Home learning? Thanks in advance! more

Open Question: I want to get an A+ certificate online, where is the best place to get certified fast?

I want to be a IT Tech, I got the basics written down here in the comfort of my own home. I got the logical knowledge from installments, virus detection and, You can just say I got the basic knowledge. It took me 3 1/2 years to get where I am. I read Pc magazines and online forums. I want to excel my knowledge because I feel this is my calling. Perhaps I can start a business or network of gaming consoles for the public. I just want to know how I can take it to another level without leaving to go to school. I am married and work a full time job as a QA Manager, how can I flex my busy schedule and learn online the fastest way to get my IT license. Can someone help please. more

Resolved Question: Is it possible for an internship to be a SCAM? I think this might be one...Please answer!?

Hi, I just turned 20 and am a sophomore in college. I was unable to find a job this semester, but this odd guy who just graduated from my college and is soon moving for grad. school told me about a paid internship. He helps out, but will be leaving shortly. There is one other intern who is around 50 yrs old and worked in broadcasting, but wants to get into Business. This sounds nice, right? BUT the internship and the lady looking for interns is what concerns me. She hardly looked at my resume and "hired" me on the spot. She is starting an online website where she sells articles to CEO's and whatnot. The thing is, training was yesterday...and it left a funny taste. Here is what concerns me: 1. The lady's idea seems like a waste because the information in the articles *me and the interns* are writing for her aren't worth paying for. 2. We get paid by each article that we write which gets sold *$25 per purchase* 3. For my training, the lady sent me an email telling me to meet her at 1:00 in which she also told me that SHE would let me know where to meet her. I had to leave class early to meet her and at 1:00 I called to ask where to meet her, since she never called. She did not pick up, so I left a message. At 1:45 I went and checked my email and found out she sent a recent message to me and the other interns *those two guys* stating we should meet at 2:00. I waited, and when she arrived I tried jokingly telling her, "You told me to meet you at 1:00." She was using her phone *obv. she got my message/call, but obv. never responded* and she just laughed and said, "Oh yea. I told you 1:00, didn't I?" 4. During the training, she unintentionally demonstrated her lack of computer knowledge by continually closing out windows, then spending 5 minutes pecking out a URL...finding she misspelled something, and trying again. 5. She emailed me and the rest of the group that night stating: _____owes us the notes she took. OWES? -_- She also said, "Let's meet Wed. (tomorrow) at ____(she misspelled this random bar) at 6:00." First off, she misspelled the place so I had to search online trying to figure out what she was talking about. Secondly, I responded with the notes attached, but also told her that I was unfamiliar with the place, but I just turned 20, so I am not sure if I can go to this place. She sent 3 email responses to my 1 email -- none which addressed the bar place and the meeting is tomorrow. Also, she never even asked us if we were free -- she just assumed. 6. I always considered an internship to be working for an already established COMPANY...not just some random lady making a website. 7. The lady is confusing: She is very disorganized, sets no deadlines, sends out emails asking us to do stuff, but none are clear -- very illogical and scattered. 8. This is a pyramid scheme 9. One thing that sticks out is that the lady hired me on the spot -- she hardly even looked at my resume. I did not say much, and was rather out-of-it, but the lady kept asking me, "How are you so smart? Is it genetics?" after the "interview." I felt this was very strange behavior -- esp. since I hardly spoke and I know I did NOT come off as intelligent *due to lack of sleep/nervousness*. 10. She mentioned that everyone she hired before quit. 11. She spells my name wrong 1/2 the time...it is LISTED in the email headers o__0 Please help! I am not sure if I should trust this internship as I have never done one before. I have a lot of free time*although I would like to learn Japanese since I am going abroad there next yr and hardly know any yet!*, but after yesterday and the emails today, I am a bit...paranoid. I live in one of the wealthiest/most innovative/advanced cities in the country/world...so I am sure I could find actual Marketing companies to apply for internships at once I actually start my Business classes... I always heard how beneficial internships are, but this seems very odd to me...the internship is for one lady lol. Anyway, Thanks in advance for your answers, and sorry this is so long >o< more

Resolved Question: Manager has suspended me for her mistakes; owner of business won't return my phone calls.... HELP!!!?

I started a job at a chiropractic center in January, the 14th, to be exact. I "trained" for 2 days before I began closing on my own. I made a few mistakes, but quickly corrected them and continued learning the their way of doing things. Within a week, my manager began asking me about appointments that were booked wrong- and basically telling me that I ruined her morning/or afternoon because clients were upset that their appointments were either at the wrong time or not on the schedule at all! I thought it sounded funny, because I'm very experienced with the software they work on- I've worked with it before at a previous job. I began keeping track of all the appointments I made and making sure everything was perfect. This week I was accused of shorting the drawer 2 days in a row; come to find out she miscounted a roll of dimes as "40" rather than 50 on 1 day (yes, a huge deal was made about it) The second day she missed several rolls of coins and I had to point it out to her that day as well! This past weekend 3 people were booked for 1 appointment; when I asked who they spoke with- they all replied with her name. She blames me even as I type this, saying I should have made sure that everything was in the system correctly. She asked if she could put me on probation yesterday, and told me not to clock in and took my key. I told her "No, because the mistakes happening around here aren't from me. " I was told that "probation period" is admitting fault. Is it? She told me that this is a "work at will" state, and that she owes no explanation for letting me go. She has several clients who have written horrible reviews about the business online and her name comes up in quite a few of them! 2 of the reviews should have proved to her that she messed up the booking or what-not. Even then, she tried to connect it back to me. This business is a franchise; I was told to call "Franchise Corporate"... I have to find out about it. What would you do??? HELP! ***I know I have options; I'd just like to know the opinions of you kind people out there.***I have called the owner several times and left a voicemail. She said she was on her way today w/the checks only for her husband to show up. At this point I'm at home and not being paid. Thanks for the answers so far.... not looking too good, but I do appreciate the response. more

Resolved Question: Proper etiquette on charging? NOT a business?

I'm practicing my photography and charging $40 for time and materials. I would like to EVENTUALLY have an actual business but for now it's just my name and a small website and fan page. I want to go to college and get my degree, but for now the most I can do is join online groups, learn on my own and practice with a few extra classes. Is this wrong? I notice how so many of you get worked up when someone gets on here, says they're just starting out and would like to build a business. I think it's hilarious myself, but am I doing wrong too?I second guess myself on everything. I like my pictures, but will anyone else? I had the issues in school years ago, where I would underestimate my ability and give up early after seeing others' work. No, I am 23.I will probably only make $80 a month LOL, this is purely practice. more

Voting Question: What should I do, I'm no longer interested in my college studies?

I am in a two year business school, going for computer science and programming. I'm in my third term, but I no longer want to be a programmer. I am more into having my own business creating crafts, writing a book, and do some art work. I wouldn't mind just learning computer science and programming, but it just seems like a waste of money now. Should I quit now while its not as costly, or just finish it up and suck it up get a job in programming pay it off then go and do something else. The stress of the school is unbearable though and I am being very controlled by my parents who give me the rights to use their vehicular. I also have to put up with my selfish cousin giving me rides every other day, and give her a ride one day of the week. I would much rather do an online college, but if I were to transfer I'd want to do something with art, but I don't see me making a lot of money doing art. If I do an online school though I can move out with my boyfriend and not get as stressed out being at home all the time. I was stuck home for about 16 years (homeschooling) and now it feels like a jail. Also I am paying for my education whether I transfer or stay. Currently have no money but my boyfriend and I are about to open an e-commerce store for my handmade crocheting and other crafts. Advice? Should I stay In school? Should I transfer to an online school for programming? Should I transfer to an online school for art? Should I just drop out and start my own business?I really don't even want to study no more.. I have a 4.0 gpa. I may still be interested in programming but I maybe convincing myself other wise cause of my parent/cousin situation. It is really very stressful, I don't mind the school. I mind being controlled having no freedom to choose what I want to do. I just jumped into college without even thinking twice. I am only 17, I'll graduate at 19. more

Resolved Question: Who will hire me?, Looking for any position, task, or challenge to be employed?!?

Hello, My name's Stephen Miller. I've started this question "Who will hire me?" to participate and simply ask the question of WHO WILL HIRE ME? I'm a fairly knowledgeable individual with alot to offer. Spending 6 years in the United States Air Force, being certified and techinal learnings of many things and alot of equipment. I find myself very skilled and able, wanting to learn new things. It is much to people's advantage knowing others already in the position to gain access to new and exciting adventures in ones life. Having the "hook ups" within different companies, corporations, and businesses is great, but for a person like me, not knowing anyone is to my disadvantage. Thinking, right at the moment, this seems like a desperate cry for help. It may seem that way, though I am an online student at Penn State University currenty. Whether or not I find success in anyways, I intend to further my knowledge. If anyone is interested please feel free to contact me via email. I believe I can handle any position thrown at me, with limited stress and anxiety due to extreem tasks. Being up to any challenge, I look forward to any advantage put forward in my path. Voting Question: Is she standing too close to the tv?

As a stay at home mom, ive recently started up my own online business (selling bows and baby items- wipe cases, diaper bags, ect) and found it unnervingly comfortable to let the tv entertain my 10 month old while i get things done. But recently she stands at the tv stand (we have a 40 something inch plasma) and ive heard that newer models of tvs are made to be ok to stand the 1 ft away from it as she watches... granted shes not there ALL day, but about 5- 10 minutes at a time, every 20 or 30 minutes... in between playing. Has anyone else heard its not bad for their eyes... and if it is, how do i break her from it? i do play with her alot during the day, but she also just seems enthralled with her PBS, and i want her to be able to learn what they do too- more

Resolved Question: Is getting a Masters Degree in Management a good idea?

I have a BS in Biology degree that is collecting dust in my front hall closet. I got that degree to please other people in my family. Now at 28 I've decide to follow my real dreams and start my own business in the catering/restaurant business. I want to go to Culinary School but I'm a Army wife and will be living in Korea for at least three years. I'm thinking about taking class online at Argosy University for a MS in Management. The idea is to get the degree, get a job in the food industry, learn the business on their time, and pay off student loan debt until I'm ready to start my business. Argosy is an accredited school but I keep reading reviews saying it's not worth it to get an online degree. That employer don't like to hire people with online degree. And Argosy is just want your money. Plus it doesn't help that I feel really pressured by the admissions rep. at Argosy. I guess my questions are: Is it really a good idea to get an online education? Is Argosy a good school? Is getting a MS in Management to vague like my degree in Biology was? more

Resolved Question: How do you translate this into spanish?

Spanish, A language that has been used even before the start of our young nation. It is used everyday in restaurants, stores and businesses. It is a friendly language and even in our social life it is used to romance our lover. Spanish is just like any language and is just as important as any other language. Especially in The United States where Spanish immigrants make up the majority of the population and you find Spanish speaking citizens everywhere you go, it could have a serious impact on your education, social life and most notably your career if you prevent yourself from learning this beautiful language. *sigh* thank you for anyone who takes their time to translate this. I'd rather not use the online translator because it is inaccurate but I am very grateful if you take your time with this. :) more

Resolved Question: Need a solution for online payment processing?

We are a new merchant planning on launching an online auction website. Our business falls into higher risk category because it is an online auction plus it involves reserve deposit, capture deposit, and then transfer of deposit. My boss wants me to come up with a solution for the payment process by the end of the week. Our business model violates the rules of various third party processors such as Amazon FPS, Braintree, etc. Authorize.net has APIs to support our business model but I am yet to receive a reply from them. Paypal and GoogleCheckout are off the list because of bad reviews. The problem is I am not 100% clear on issues such as PCI compliance, how to store the credit card information, etc (I just recently learned about merchant accounts and gateways). What would be a good place to start? How should I go about with my research? Any suggestion would be very helpful(By the way, although my boss is from US I am from Asia so it is not possible for me to make phone calls to various providers. I am trying to communicate with them through emails) more

Voting Question: Is this a good health insurance strategy?

I don't have real good health good health insurance as of now. However I am able to access medical care because of a county subsidized health program. But, the benefits are extremely limited. I have used the county health program to see a doctor about problems with my right eye. several times over the last 2 years. I was told that the problems with my eye are cause by me being overweight. My last appoint to see a ophthalmologist was mid October of 2009; which was inconclusive. I have a follow up examine; on the morning of January 10th 2010. Now I want to get real health insurance and spent the last week researching the various options. Right now my only option is to get an individuals health insurance policy for a single, non smoking, 35 year old male. Based on my research, my eye problems will be excluded on any individual insurance plan as a "pre-existing condition". However, the rules for a group health plan are different and more favorable. In my state:, """A group health plan can apply a pre-existing condition exclusion period only those conditions for which you actually received (or were recommended to receive) a diagnosis, treatment or medical advice within the 6 months immediately before you joined that plan. This period is also called the look back period. … Group health plans can exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions only for a limited time. The maximum period is 12 months.""" I interpret that to mean that if I sign up for a group health plan and had sought medical advice, treatment, or diagnosis, for anything, with six months of joining the group health policy; then the insurer can apply a "pre-existing condition exclusion" for 12 months. Also, I learned through research, that it is a lot less difficult to quality for group health insurance than you might think, in my state. In fact, it seems that if you form a business entity, like a S corporation, C corporation, or limited liability company, and have at least one employee; than you legally qualify for "group health insurance plan". Now the problem I mentioned earlier I am having with my eyes may be attributable to me being overweight like that doctor said. Or you could from some unknown more serious problem. If it is more serious, then I am screwed, since there is no way I could get this covered on a individual health insurance policy without a exclusion for a pre-existing conditions. However, here is my strategy to use the state laws to my advantage to get group health insurance with this so called "pre-existing condition". He is my plan: 1) Get good health insurance now to protect myself for unforeseen health issues with the understanding that my eye problems will bee excluded as a pre-existing condition. 2) Start a home based business in the name of a legal entity like a corporation or llc. I was going to start a online business any ways. Now, I have an greater incentive. Also, hire someone as an "employee". One of my relatives will do quite nicely. This, would qualifies me for group health insurance 3) Mean while, cancel my upcoming eye examination scheduled for the 10th of January. Why? If my understanding is correct, then by law no "pre-existing exclusion" can be applied to a member on a group health plan if they have not seeked medical attention 6 months prior to joining the group health policy. As previously stated, I last went to the ophthalmologist in mid October 2009. It is now, the second week of January 2010. I calculate that by canceling my appointed to the ophthalmologist, 6 months would have passed by the end of April 2010. This will beyond the 6 months "look back period" allowed by law for pre-existing conditions to be excluded under a group health plan. Then, I can buy a group health insurance without fear of any exclusions for pre-existing conditions. Doing this is a definite gamble. This symptoms I having with my eyes get intermittedly worst on a daily basis. However, it is something I could live with for 4 mores months to get group health insurance. In addition, if I eat better, and loose weight then the problem with my eyes may take care of itself. 4) Buy, group health insurance through my home based business at the end of April or the beginning of May in 2010. I would received the substantially lower premiums offered by group health insurance. Assuming, I don't go to the doctor during the next 4 months and or the problems with my eyes does not get better; then I could join a group health, through my company, legally without a "pre-existing exclusion." What do you think of this strategy?. Any improvements or pit falls? more

Resolved Question: Should I continue to do everything myself?

My husband and I haven't even been married for a year, but we have been together for 6. We have a 2 year old daughter together and I have an 11 year old from a previous relationship. The problem I am having is, my husband can't seem to do anything without me. Before he married me, his mother read and handled all of his mail. When bills were due, he would give her the money and she would pay them. He never even knew how to write a check. He doesn't know how to fix things. He doesn't know how to handle business calls. I handle all the Dr. appointments and discuss all of our family's medical concerns should there be any. We are now in the process of buying our first home. I have researched our loan options. I have driven around to look at potential homes. I have spoken with and deal directly with the lender. I deal with and speak with our agent. When reviewing the inspection report, he was like "I don't like looking at all that stuff, you do it." I am the one researching loan terms and just trying to understand our purchase agrement. This evening, he wanted to look online at various home improvement sites so that we could prioritize the things we know we are going to need to work on. He lost interest about 10 minutes in. When our 2 year old started whining that she was sleepy, he told me that what I was doing was not a priority and that I needed to go put her to bed. I asked why he couldn't do it since he saw I was doing something and he said that I was a mother and he needed to get in the shower to get ready for bed. I am really tired of him not making anything but himself a priority. He doesn't give our daughter a bath. He can't handle anything that relates to our home, medical or educational responsibilities. He takes no interest in learning what the hell he is even signing as it relates to home ownership. He just wants me to do it all. I work from 8 am to 5 pm everyday, and when I get home, my focus is on the kids and our home. He comes home and watches TV. I am at my wits end, but if I stop, he does not know how to pick up the ball and run with it so I have to, or risk us losing everything we have worked for. What do I do?More Info: For the response about the wedding....no, he didn't go pick out his tux himself. He wouldn't go without me. I planned the entire wedding myself. I feel like if something happened to me, he could not take care of me because he wouldn't begin to know where to start in terms of insurance, Dr.s, etc. This fool just got in the bed and is arguing with me still about putting my daughter to sleep. Unbelievable!I swear I could write a book about my life. It is so unattractive to be married to someone that does nothing but watch The Real World Road Rules and The Bad Girls Club. Yes, I am very serious. We don't go to movies. We don't go out for nice dinners. We are in the middle of trying to buy a house, which means no spending, and he goes to a sports bar to have drinks with his friends and watch the fight. It's like his only concern is having the latest clothes and fashion and not being left out of parties with his friends. I get the girls ready every morning, drop them off at their prospective destinations. Then I go to work. On top of doing my job, I am usually handling housing stuff, medical appointments, insurance forms, etc. just life stuff. Then I have to leave to go see houses if our agent calls. And then go back to work. Pick the kids up and then go home. Deal with them in terms of baths and dinner, homework, etc. More housing stuff. And then find time to get myself ready. On top of dealing with the kds, dinner, etc. I find time to watch home improvement shows or property shows that walk you through the home buying process so I can learn more about what we are going through, and also, if we don't have the money to fix something, I have certainly learned enough to either save us lots of money and fix it ourselves, or at least what the costs involved would be. I htink that is real handy. But he just brushes it off by saying "we don't even have the house yet." But I want to be prepared. more

Resolved Question: Where would I go to learn about starting an online business?

I've been hopping around websites for two months trying to find out if I'm doing things right in starting my online store. I haven't yet launched the website but there's still planning to be done, such as determining what to sell, getting a budget together, etc. I just think that there's more to be done than what I am doing. Can anyone give me a website that explains what needs to be done to start a business online simply? :)...I'm going to assume that I shouldn't listen to that first answer. o.oWould business training courses be available to high school students?Maybe it would be better if I were clearer. I am building an E-commerce website on Weebly.com and am planning on selling great quality crafts and hand-made appearel. I don't know if it's not the best way to start but if you never try, you'll never succeed, right? >.>I'm not going to take that big of a risk on the word of one person. Maverick Money Makers Club may be a good way to make money, but I'm not willing to risk it..nor am I old enough to. :P more

Resolved Question: What order is calculus learned in?

I'm taking Calculus for Business and Social Science next semester and I'm trying to get a head start. I've been reviewing polynomials and how to factor them, since that seems very important in finding limits. After limits, what should I start studying? I looked at learning objectives for some courses that post syllabus information online, and it looks like derivatives and integrals would come next. Am I right? And are there any other aspects of algebra that I should polish up on? more

Resolved Question: When to come up with a business name and other small business tips, please?

My ultimate goal is to open a successful jewelry/jewelry repair shop. I don't have money or the 'know how' to get started but I've educated myself quite a bit. I have a plan to reach my ending goal. It will take time but I'm positive I can do it. 1) First I want to get started finding merchandise at thrift stores or flea markets and selling them online. This will teach me how to keep track of income, build my skill in financing, and I can start a website. With the extra money I gain will start step two, jewelry making. 2) Making beaded jewelry or wire jewelry I can build my creativity for different styles. This will also help me determine if my ending goal is only a phase or hobby to look forward to rather than an actual goal that will end up as my career. After some time doing this I would have also build up an inventory for my next step, setting up shop. 3) Now I can really get to practice! I plan on setting up a stand or small table at the local flea market. If I decide to reach this step it will be the most helpful to my ending goal. I will learn the basics of running an actual business, keeping up with inventory, calculating profit from income vs expenses and loss, and organization. This extra money will help me buy the tools I'll need for making and buying fine jewelry such as gold, silver, and gemstones. 4) Actually going through the process of opening and running an actual business. With the previous steps I would be saving as much money as I can to buy or start renting a shop for my store. My question is when would be a good time to start advertising the name of my shop? I already have a name in mind, but it still needs work. And does anybody out there have any positive criticism for my plan so I can do this as flawless as possible? (There will be many flaws along the way, I know) There's also a step missing somewhere. I need practice repairing jewelry before I actually start the repair. Does anybody have any tips to help me with this? I'm already collecting broken gold and such from family and friends so I can practice repairs once I get the tools, is there anything else I could do to practice with? Last question is what's the best way to look for classes to take in this particular field of career? I'm in Houston, Texas and would like to find hands on training for jewelry making/repairs. more

Resolved Question: PLEASE HELP! Answer this question.... somebody...?

My mom and dad got divorced when i was 10. My dad was a partner at a consulting firm and my mother was full time stay at home mom, Cleaning, watching me, A 100% stereotype soccer mom. Now my dad works at a local college 10 minutes from home making an "average" wage. And my mom works as a kinder-garden teacher. Teaching kids how to speak english... she was a manager of a bank before she married by dad living a very "succsefull life" Both have stopped growing as a human being, stopped learning, stop educating them selves's. My mom put herself in a "safe" environment and surrounded by children, a thing that teaches her nothing. She no longer has tv or watches it, does'nt surf the web anymore "she has a new laptop", does'nt read psychology books or nutrition books anymore. Now she put togeather 2000 peace puzzles. She dosen't know anything about the current economic crisis, bills being passed, nothing. She barley understands how to use internet explorer 9. Along with other updates that have ben made to BASIC web technology. My dad now works at a safe little college, where he no longer has pressure of fly all over the world doing cooperates deals. Its pathetic, the bother of them have stoped growing as human beings. He dosent know how to do anything with technology. He used to read newsweek, aviation, among other news magazines dosent know how to use an ipod, dosent know how to use pandora, itunes, limewire, Nothing. He listens to the same damn jazz every day. EVERY DAY, 5 ARTISTS! THATS IT!! Both of them, have put giant bubbles around them selves and they dont grow, or learn, or understand anything in the world I live in today. Its so hard, I want to learn, and gain wisdom from both of them. But there is little to none that I can suck up. Its so frustrating, I hate this life, both of them seem retarded in comparison the parents you see picking up star bucks in the morning. Talking about movies, the news, business, there children, psychologists, medication, etc etc. Stuff stereotypical white parents do and say. "like mine used to be" Will this ever change, will they ever come out of this bubble and start living life like its supposed to be live in the 21Century?? Will they go ever go back to being normal?? Dose this normally happen when parents get devorced? Please help! What should I do?? I have tried to teach them things, but they both "act" Like grand parrents, that ideal, there too old to learn or understand. THERE ONLY IN THERE 50s! they have 30 more years until they can say that crap! And even then, my grandpa checks his stock online, dose all of his banking online. Awhile my dad still uses budget books.... Seriously, wtf... just wtf... I have reached my braking point. Watching this stupid black and white movie just was to much. Please... advice, ADVICE! more

Resolved Question: buying/selling domain names for a high school business?

Hi, I am a senior in high school, and I would like to teach myself how to run an online business. I hear buying/selling domain names is a viable business. I don't really care about making tons of money -- this is more of a learning experience than an income. however, I don't want to lose money, and it would be nice to make a little profit. can anyone tell me about this business, and what I would do to get started. I am kind of clueless. and also, I am not 18 yet. Is this a problem? more

Hi guys, i am trying to start a photography business. I just want my photos out there in the world and for my name to be recognized by at least someone. Now i am not saying i am the most talented photographer. No, i still have much to learn and understand...i am still o the bottom end of what is considered "Professional". So here's my question. I want to know if Flikr or any other public network site can help me with this. I want to be judged as well as my photos, and i want to hear what others have to say. Is there also some way to protect my photos online so that no one can say they are theirs and copy them onto their computers. Thanks much!by buissness i mean having my photos be in a calander or something(if they are good enough), not actually working for someone taking pictures...which im sure i would love to do...but im only 15. more

Resolved Question: How can I motivate myself to do more with my life?

Im currently working part time as a lifeguard and I love it. I earn enough money to pay all my bills and I have enough to take my girlfriend out to dinner, cinema etc. Life actually feels really good for once and I feel happy!! Only problem is that I know it cant last forever because at the moment I live with my parents and rent is cheap. I know in the future when I need to move out, I'm gonna have more bills and part time is not going to be enough. Im 19 so I still have more then enough time to do something with my life I just dont know what :(. College feels like a waste of time for me, I studied IT for 2 years and I hated every minute of it. I still got my A-Levels at the end of it which felt kinda good but all I learnt is that I dont want to do IT as a job. How do I make a change if my life already feels really good? I would like to have a part time online business along with my part time lifeguard job. I just need the motivation to actually get started on something and think of an idea. more

Voting Question: Calling all PC Maint/Repair Business Owners/Techies/Geeks/Etc.?

I'm enrolled in a Computer Engineering program at my local community college, and am interested in starting a PC Maintanence and Repair business. Any thoughts, lessons learned, etc? What is, in your opinion, the best guaranteed software that we can buy to diagnose and repair problems/viruses/system crashes/etc. on pc's/windows systems? We looked at a few online, but some had reviews about causing registry errors that wound up costing $350 or more to fix. Definately not a good thing! Any constructive help would be appreciated. Resolved Question: Should I tell my brother that I think his son is truenting (Skipping school) or should I mind my own business?

I have always been close to my brothers children ( my nieces and nephew) On the day the youngest of his children was born he walked out on his wife. He had been having an affair. She was devastated of cause and went to pieces. I was only 17 at the time, but could not believe what my brother had done. I packed my stuff and moved in to his wife's house and helped with the children. I was the one who got up in the night to feed the baby, I fed and changed the baby and looked after my other niece and nephew. I was the one who made there breakfast and tea and get them ready for school and I cleaned the house. She was too depressed to even get out of bed. My parents helped as much as they could but they both had full time jobs. On top of this I was still going to college each day. Over time I built up a very close relation ship with my 2 nieces and nephew. They see me more as a big sister than a aunty. After a few years she finally started to sort her self out and, her and my brother divorced. I had to move on and have my own life I got married and now have 3 children of my own. I speak to my 2 nieces and nephew regularly and they come and stay with me at least once a year. Last year they came and stayed for the summer holidays. They are all still living with there mum and my brother has them every other weekend. About a year 1/2 ago my nephews mum made the mistake of buying my nephews a xbox 360 and now he is addicted. He plays all day and all night and barely sleeps. His mum does nothing about it though. He continually has head aches from playing it so much and so his mum lets him stay off school then he just plays even more. His attendance at school has been so bad that both my brother and his ex wife have been called up to the school on many occasions. He also never does his home work. He switches his xbox on as soon as he gets home and him mum says nothing. I spoke to my brother about a week ago and he said things were improving.. My husband has a xbox 360 and he decided to play abit on thursday morning before work. We noticed that my nephew was online playing on the xbox which we thought was strange as he should be at school. I kept checking for the rest of the day and he was continually playing all day, he continued to play all evening. and all night and did not seem to go to bed. The next day we switched our xbox on again as my husband wanted to play for 1 hour before going to work. and we noticed that again he was online and still playing on his xbox and yet again was not at school. (My nephew is just 14 and the games he is playing are not even appropriate for his age. At the moment he is playing call of duty modern warfare 2 which is a 18 and grand theft auto which is a 18) I am really concerned as if this continues he will never do well at school, he won't learn and will end up failing his exams. He this continues he will probably be expelled ( which would not bother him he would just think good I can play on my xbox even more). Should I try talking to him mum again or should I tell my brother that he seems to be skipping school again or is it none of my business and I should mind my own business. Is there any thing I can do. Any advice would be much appreciated Thanks in advanceThere really isn't much point in talking to my nephew I have talked to him in the past and when I have asked him why he skips school he says he would much rather play his xbox than sit at school in boring lessons. His xbxo 360 means more to him than any thing so what ever you say he wont listen more

Resolved Question: Would this be a really stupid idea, or could it work, I need serious advice?

My boyfriend and I looking to start a small business; a coffee shop. Since we don't own a house and he has bad credit, we can't qualify for a loan, but his buddy from school happens to have a family member that can look into getting a us a business grant to get it launched. We also want to "go green" with it, that is energy efficient. When I told my mom about this, she kept questioning me and didn't understand why we wanted to do a coffee shop, since I'm going back to school to learn web programming and development and also have a seasonal part time job--it's almost like our business idea was shot down! It's because my boyfriend and I are both struggling in this sh*tty economy, so we thought it would work out better in the long run if we are self employed. Now I'm not stupid, I know that this is a lot of work and it will take time. Will it be hard for us to get a business grant? I heard that the process can be frustrating? Any advice? Please don't spam with online money making ideas or I will report you, thanks. more

Resolved Question: I Honestley Dont mean To offend Anyone Who is Muslim ((MJ FANS)) JUST TO CLEAR UP RUMORS.?

ok, i am christian... i try my best not to judge people themselves. but the choices they make, how they make mistakes, learn from it, and better themselves. truly- its none of my business uneles they are "in my life" well i didn't believe the stuff about Michael converting to islam but i was on michael jackson.com and i saw some fan stuff about Muslim things and Allah... so i was trying to make sure what i knew was true. so i looked online for articles about it. and i have come to the conclusion that NO, Michael did not. the site i looked at said they got there sources and the sources also started from THE SUN, and of course us Michael Jackson fans know how much of liars they are, example.... remember when they came out with that FAKE AUTOPSY report? talkin about Michaels head was STILL severely burned and he had BROKEN RIBS??? WTF? BROKEN RIBS?? mannnn, when i first saw that I CRIED. i knew it was fake as hell, but i still cried cus well, it was pretty close to june 25th when that info was "fakely released" so i just cried because of the word "autopsy" and "Michael" in the same sentence. but yeah back to the whole point of posting this. the sun's "PROOF" of Michael converting to islam was the fact that Jermaine said in a press confrence "May Allah be with you, Michael, always" well, HELLO??? HE IS JERMAINE!!!!!!! he is gonna say "Allah" because that is Jermains "God" because Muslim is the religion he practices now. just because Jermaine said that doesn't mean thats what Michael believed. I believe Michael was a type of Christian called "Jehovah's Witness" Jermaine NEVER SAID Michael was gonna change is name Jermaine NEVER SAID Michael converted to islam. Michael NEVER SAID any of that either. lies lies lies lies. this is the part where i don't mean to offend anyone. we all have our religions, we all need to respect one anothers beliefs. but i was kinda in relive that he didn't because of religionsons beliefs.. i also wanted to just clear this up.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxBCzPgodVc&feature=player_embedded#F.Y.I if you reallu wanna go THERE? i think michael was an "above average" male. http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s287/MJJ-jacqueline/The%20Gold%20Pants/1thewayyoumakemjtpiclg7jw8.jpgi was talkin to the person that said michael had a small "pen-is"SONIA?? Resolved Question: Should I Become A Cop?

Facts (Pro): -I'm 23 years old -I have a college degree in business administration. -I love going to the gun range (even learning to cast and reload my own ammo--Taurus PT92 9mm, accuracy radius of 2.5" @ 5 yds) -I love reading detective novels (John Sandford and Michael Connolly are my favorite), and my favorite shows are Cops, Manhunt, The First 48, Real Vice Cops, and Cold Case Files -I'm love listening to police scanners (listen online and with my Radio Shack Pro164) -I don't drink heavily, smoke, do drugs, and have no criminal record Facts (Con): -I am 25 lbs overweight (for their regulations) -My wife doesn't want me to be a cop, and neither do my parents or her parents. -Police pay starts at ~40K and is capped in my city at around 72K for the most experienced cops. That isn't enough to support the lifestyle we'd both dreamed of. We'd hoped that I would earn around 150K. -Cops work weird hours, long hours, and the mother is often left alone to raise the kids. -My GPA in college was only a 2.9, which may preclude more esoteric opportunities later on like FBI or CIA. -I have had 7 minor driving infractions (speeding, seat belt, red light) in the past 5 years -I have read that much police work involves teams, and while I don't particularly mind teams, I always find myself working alone, so I guess I prefer independence. I fear the bureaucracy of the department might be too much. So, cops out there. Should I become a police officer? My vision or dream is to work as a homicide detective. What are your thoughts or guidance? Thank you so much for your comments. This is a big decision for me. I have filled out the application and gotten together all my special documents but I'm just not sure about whether its the right move. Thank you, Mike P.S. For biographical purposes, I have never served in the military. I'm not sure if that will have any bearing on your decision, but it may. more

Resolved Question: Need help with Chemical Engineering Major.........Please?

need advice please....... Ever since childhood I have enjoyed being a keen observer and an early learner. My interest to know more has always led me towards exploring new avenues of learning. Throughout those years, I have been intrigued by a lot of sciences. As far as I remember, my special interest in Engineering came to light when I first thought of product productions at the age of 11. During my high school years, chemistry and math were my favorite subjects. I graduates high school at the age of sixteen and I attended online school program from London, UK. I was in double major with computer science and electronic commerce. During my first year of study in computer and business, I play professional computer games to pay my tuition. Finally, I realized that being a programmer was not my dream job. So I decided to go to United States and study to become a Chemical Engineer but my parents were very disappointment with my decision and they did not want me to go to foreign country because I am their only son. During my first year of study in Community College, I took general elective courses, math and basic engineering courses. Btw I had to start school from the beginning because of the credits from FC are not transferred. Two years later, I transferred to a very competitive engineering school with 3.3 GPA. I am majoring in chemical engineering. I chose chemical engineering program because it has a good knowledge combination of math, chemistry and mechanical engineering course load. I also like the idea of production of useful products for industry and people. I am really good at math and science (I had grade A in Cal1, 2, 3, Diff Equ and general chemistry and physics classes but C in English composition and literature classes) but right now I am having trouble with following my chemical engineering analysis class and organic class. ( the homework load of material balance and manometer problems are killing me). I am not a student like who like to party and always enjoying fun stuff. I am taking 16 credits and study at least 30 hrs a week just my own in library like individually not with the group. Is there anyone who did really well in sophomore year of ChemE and would like to advice me? Any chemical engineer (p.s I really like ChemE and enjoying learning it and I dont have second choice. some of my classmates has changed major to mechanical but I dont really want to change my major) more

Resolved Question: Oops! Did I choose the wrong major?

This might be more of a rant or vent than a question, but I'm posting to see the responses. I'm currently a senior accounting major hellbent on graduating with a 3.4 overall GPA. I'm enrolled in tax, intermediate accounting II, and a few business core classes. So far, the accounting program hasn't really taught me much. My tax professor is earning his doctorate from an online university, one of those unaccredited programs such as Phoenix. I start an internship with the City's Financial department tomorrow, which I'm a little anxious about. I feel that my interest and my credentials don't allow me to be anything more than a bookkeeper, mainly because of my mediocre GPA (Mother had cancer, took difficult classes). Is the real world accounting much different than the bond valuation drills we learn in some accounting courses? Should I have gone the IT route or maybe became a nurse? Would love to hear any opinions. more

Resolved Question: A good idea or am i just dreaming?

Hi I am a former teacher(bachelor's in history, minor spanish and associates degree in business) that has taught spanish, history and esl in the united states. Last year i moved to mexico and fell in love with the country and i've heard about other people going over there to teach english. I recently met this guy online about a few months back. he wants to start a language school in the queretaro/celaya area. I was intrigued by the idea and i was really interested. While i do want to do it i am a bit hesitant since i have never done this before. He said that he would help me get my fm3(not pay for it but help me through the process) and he already has a room rented out for the beginning and he is even getting computers for the students to learn on. He says that celaya is a hotbed for learning english since all the college graduates have to do it before they graduate. I just don't want to go there blindingly accepting something that may or not be legit. I have always dreamed of living in southern mexico as the northern border is not that great. The pay is 8000 pesos and if that's not enough he talked to his buddy at a cyber cafe that will hire me for another 3000 pesos..so 11000 total. My questions are 1. Does anyone know anything about the celaya/queretaro area? 2. How hard is it to get students to teach? 3. Is it hard to get a fm3 visa with independiente status so i can freelance? That way im not tired to a school? 4. Is this even realistic? I will have anywhere from 2000-3000 dollares with me. He told me that that is more than enough since the cost of living is low. He also wants to teach with NO book...im not too keen on that idea ...any suggestions would be great! Thanks!no currently i am living back in the united states..i am not "going in business with him" he is going to open the school and hire me as a director/teacher..for all sakes and purposes my name will be no where on the paperwork..and he has asked me for NO money at all, not even mentioned it..so that's taken care of :) more

Voting Question: I want to get these degrees..is it too much? (MBA,CCNA,BTech-Telecom)?

Hi , I have a Diploma in high frequency electronics and also a Diploma in Sound Engineering(theory only, did it through distance learning). I am thinking of completing my Telecommunication B-Tech degree through a University in South Africa(where im originally from), that offers distance learning, it consists of 8 subjects and an industrial project. It would take about three years. I recently decided that my career choice is to do something in IT, Networking Proffesional, as i see my telecommunication degree would supplement my IT career in Networking and both would intertwine. I did the A+ and N+ courses online that I downloaded one day(didnt get the actual certifications.) and this is what I want to do. Now, I also love reading and lately ive been reading ebooks like "MBA in a Day", "MBA in finance" etc that I downloaded from the net. Im very interested in finance and business too so Im thinking of taking an online MBA course while working on my Telecommunications Degree. Also, in the networking field, ive read extensively on the CCNA, CCNP and CCIE courses. So...i want to start on my CC** courses too with Cisco. I read that industry ranks these individuals with these qualifications very high and are in demand. So in order to get good at my IT career in Networking, I want to start with the CCNA. Now by doing this, obviously I will have alot of studying to do over a course of a couple of years, but obviously with the Bachelors degree and the CC** courses PLUS with the MBA, my knowledge in Networking would be sky high and I will also posess the Business know-how of the industry, finances etc. Do you think this will be enough for my career and that I would be knowledgeable enough to do anything? I passed my Diploma subjects with very good grades and studying hard is something I love. I love to learn. Studying until 4 in the morning doesnt scare me, i love it. ***Please give me your opinions if you have knowledge of the MBA or CCNA courses or if you are in the industry.*** more

Resolved Question: How do I get my Mother's attention?

Well my first problem with my mom is that she expects me to be a genius. When I was in 3rd - 6th grade I got straight A's. But at the end of 6th I started falling off. I realized that...She never says good job or is even phased that I get A's. All she says is "Well you supposed to get straight A's so Im not surprised." But when my cousin goes up from a F to a D its like its party time. So about 2-3 weeks ago was the first week of school. That friday we had a Science pretest. I never really learned science so the test was challenging for me. And the CPS system has this new thing called parent portal so the parents can go online and see the grades. Well my mom went on and saw my grade was 67%. So she said " How are you failing the first week of school? That means you weren't trying hard enough." And she turned my phone off. So since she wanted to be like that, I asked her if I could be in Science Club after school so that I can learn more Science. She told me no. So when I do bad I get in trouble but when I try to do good, I cant do it. I have given up on school because nothing i try to do pleases her. So I wanna know, how can I approach her and tell her how I feel. Question 2.. She has a new live in boyfriend. He is nice and stuff but my mom puts him before me. Background Info: . I would be at my grandma's house all weekend and when I leave my house the dishes are all clean. When I come back sunday, Its a sink full of dishes and they want ME to wash them. So most times I just go in my room and dont do them. Its like it's no point in even arguing with her. At the end of the day, she could careless about whats fair! So I want to know how do I let her know that I am feeling neglected? (BTW she is slightly racist. So if I tell her I feel neglected she will tell me that I am acting like a white child) Question 3..... My mom is always tellin my business to everyone she knows. Then wants to get mad when I dont talk to her anymore. And she likes to snoop n read my diary. Background Info: : I expressed me feelings to her and then I heard she told my aunt and she told my cousins. So I decided I will not tell her my personal problem. I'll write it down. So after I wrote almost a whole book of my feelings, I find out that she found my diary and read it. Not only that but she ripped out all the bad stuff. So I just said forget it. So I started going on websites like Tagged and MySpace so that I can write what I want. But she found my Tagged and deleted it. My cousin told my mom I had a Myspace but I lied and said I deleted. So after that... I started talking on the phone. But she gets mad at me for that because she isnt very fond of the way me n my friends act. Like we get loud and stuff. We talk about boys and other stuff girls do. So now she always asks me questions about my life. I try to tell her but some of the stuff, She gets mad over and she just wants to shut me out. So Yahoo....please help me. I just want for my mother to stop treating me like a problem child. She has me feeling depressed. I cant talk to her without bein Criticized on what I do. I feel like Im all alone. The ultimate question is How can I get her to listen to me, and stop putting off my problems and issues as stupid stuff? Thank you alot. Best Answer gets 10 points more

Resolved Question: How to I build a website for an online private school?

I'd like to build a website that will involve an online school course. This will require the ability have people become members and give access to them only. Also business transactions through credit cards or paypal etc. How and where do I start when it comes to building my first business website with these sort of features? I'm completely new to this so I'm not sure where to start. I realize it takes html, css etc. and hosting but if it will take a long while for an inexperienced user to learn about more advanced code would I be better off paying someone else to do it for me? Or are their pre-build sites online with these sort of features that I could use for making it? more

Resolved Question: What do I do about my sister-in-law?

I am really struggling with my relationship with my brothers wife. I am to the point where I want to confront her, but am not sure if that would really help. It could make things a million times worse. The main problem is that in my gut I have never trusted her. See she met my brother online and within 2 months of meeting they became pregnant. That was my first intoduction to her. Sadly she miscarried that pregnancy. All of us (my family) were slightly relieved. But then within another 2 months she was pregnant again, and had another miscarriage. And another. She became pregnant once more and now I have a niece who I love dearly. No one in our family would ever talk about why she kept getting pregnant when they barely knew each other. (I know my brother was not innocent in all that, but what we know of her now, suggests that he might have been a little bit manipulated.) About her past we came to learn that she had an ex husband and a 7 year old son who she is not allowed to have custody of. She can't even visit him. No real answers as to why. She said it was because he had a better lawyer which doesn't make a lot of sense to me. So besides her bit of a mysterious past, once she knew that she was going to be able to carry the last pregnancy to term, all of a sudden she started acting like we should all be one happy family and that everything they were doing was as normal as could be. I understand that they have to be responsible for the baby, but it was a kind of fantasy that was hard for me to swallow. They rented a house, decorated, all that jazz. But a real problem was that they have very little money and were way above their means. My brother has a struggling business and has very unreliable income she had a job as a nanny which she intended to quit once the baby was born to be a SAHM. My mother was giving them lots of money, taking her to the doctor because they only had one car, buying them things for the baby. Her family threw her a huge baby shower and again everyone was acting out this happy family fantasy. They got married (justice of the peace, I was not invited) in the 8th month of the pregnancy, mostly because of my brother wanting to do the right thing for the baby. That helped me accept her a bit more, but I could not get over the fact of how she kept acting like this was her first and only child. I can never put it out of my mind that she has a son somewhere in another state she can't see and never talks about. When the baby was 5 months they got evicted from their house. They had NO money because she refused to work anymore and my brother was struggling and making dumb moves with his business. They had tons of debt. They had this grand plan to move to another part of the state and live with her mom because the grass might be greener there. She refused my families offers of places to stay for a while to get back on their feet. The day care would be free with myselft and my mom so she could get a job. It became clear that she was again in this fantasy that she needed to be a pampered STAHM and deliberatly put them in situations where she had to be because they moved where they had no afforable day care. She began to blame my brother for their lack of money but would do nothing to help. They have now been bouncing around from house to house of her family members since February. My brother's health is seriously declining (ulcers, colitious, chronic back pain) from the stress of trying to support them and her life style. She always has to have new clothes, buys tons of unnecessary stuff, completly acts like they have all the money in the world. The baby just turned 1 and they had a party at a RESORT hotel and went ALL out. crazy! She has now completly shut us out, won't come to visit or when they do it is for only a few hours. I cannot believe the stunts she pull or the things she says. My brother is a wimp and can't stand up to her controlling ways that are getting worse and worse. All of a sundden, my mom who has been nothing but supportive and loving to her, (and a peacemaker when I could not be), ignoring everything, is some sort of bad MIL. My brother told me that she would never ever let my mom take care of the baby because my mom once innocently suggested a way of doing somthing different when it came to changing diapers. I know I have gone on and on, I hope you got the main idea here. As for me, I am so tired of the BS. I can't stand how fake she is and how she has created this fantasy world. I can barely talk to her because I am so mad. I hate that she refuses to take resonsibility for her choices to get pregnant with a guy she barely knew, knowing they had no money. I seriously understand about wanting to stay home with your children but if you are HOMELESS a job seems like a priority. I said this (in so many words) to her once and she has been like ice to me ever since. My brother wanted to leave her, but hasn't because he wants to stay as close to his daughter as pos more

Resolved Question: Starting My Own Interior Decorating Business in Ontario?

I have recently moved to a small-ish with my husband, to be closer to family. I already resent my administrative job at a local company and am looking to branch out. My sister-in-law and I are both very apt when it comes to interior decorating and we’d like to capitalize on that. There is one other prominent interior decorater in town who’s work is terrible, in our opinion, so we confident heading into the market. I’m starting an online study course for ‘Managing Your Own Business’ where I’ll learn what steps to take to create my business as well as how to market etc., through ICS Canada. If anyone has any tips/tricks on creating an interior decorating company, please share! All information is welcome and appreciated. more

Voting Question: Beginning an online enterprise, which degree is apt for becoming a skilled technician?

I'm not seeking to begin an online small business which may replace my current job, but certainly a viable way to produce a 2ndary income online. I'm still trying to read up on various types of premises that will lead to viability, and I believe I will be more sucessful if I can contribute from my own skills that I'll develop and make that the focus of my online enterprise which may grow into a small business. My biggest question is, where can I begin to learn about finding a type of degree that relates to my interest and which can be applied in growing my enterprise? I'm focusing on keeping it online because of the low startup costs in contrast to buying and storing physical property. Are there software products which I focus on this and could be used as a platform to jump start making money after the initial investment of buying them? I haven't found anything legitimate, only online scams. Also, even though I'm willing to invest time, which I hear is required, I currently hold a job and until I'm viable enough to quit I'm willing to obtain software relating to this if it'll prevent me from be more
