Best advice from local business owners: Take care of customer
Laleman is among business people who said being friendly is the best advice they've received and the advice they'd pass along to others.“I operate by the Golden Rule. Treat everyone like you'd want to be treated," Laleman said.Laleman learned this from her parents and from Carol Struck, who employed Laleman for seven years before Laleman bought the used book store from her three years ago.Bob Groetken, owner of Schooners in Bloomington, also got valuable business advice from a parent. His father, Cecil, told him: “Never think you are any better than the person coming through the door."The concept of treating customers as individuals extends to the largest of businesses as well. For example, Ed Rust Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of State Farm Insurance Cos., said that a mentor, the late Tom Morrill, told him that although the insurer has many, many transactions daily, each involves “a human being who wants to be treated fairly and recognized as an individual."Rust said Morrill's best advice was that “permanent success comes only to those who concentrate on what's good for the customer."Meanwhile, Deanna Frautschi, executive vice president of human resources and communications at Country Financial, credits her parents with giving her the best advice for both work and life:“Never think you are better than anyone else because of position or title or less than anyone else because of the same."Frautschi said her parents also advised her to “give back to the community in which you live and work."Kelly Kinate, who operates an American Family Insurance agency in Pontiac, thinks that's sage advice and has been active in Elks and Rotary.Other good advice that Kinate has received is not to act like he knows it all. more
GE Money gets out of Canadian mortgage business
N: Quote, Profile, Research) plans to wind up its Canadian alternative mortgage business this week as part of a wider corporate shift away from consumer finance, according to a note sent to brokers.
GE Money said that as of the close of business Thursday, it will no longer accept new Canadian mortgage applications but will continue to fund existing commitments.
"This difficult decision to wind down our mortgage business in Canada comes as a result of a lengthy analysis of our global business, as GE and GE Money continue to apply investment capital in areas providing the best potential return for our shareholders," the company said in a note to brokers this week.
The value of GE Money's Canadian mortgage business was less than C$1 billion, and it entered the market in 2005. more

Voting Question: Dropship or Wholesale Suppliers?
I'm looking into starting up my own online ebay business. I know how to set up an online store. The only problem is that I don't have a product. I'm interested in either dropshipping or purchasing lots of items and am looking for suppliers. I'm really into fashion, clothing, make-up, etc, but will start up my store with anything. The items must be authentic. If anyone has any advice or tips, you can list them below. Thanks. :) moreVoting Question: starting a ebay site?

I just opened an online boutique and am planning to head out to the local flea markets and fairs when the nice weather comes along. I've done ok on ebay and am hoping my venture off the auction site goes well and my business continues to grow. However I would like to start buying wholesale crafting items instead of buying everything at my local AC moore. Everywhere I see really low prices wholesale asks for an ein or resell #. I'm looking to start a small operation in which i buy tennis racquets wholesale and sell them through Ebay. I figure i would also offer to string the racquets myself for an additional fee prior to shipping them. I'm not looking to get rich quick here, i simply want to make enough profit over the next few months so i can have some money to spend this summer when i'm out of school. For this reason i am not expecting to sell at high volumes (i would not be able to string the racquets fast enough anyways). Unfortunately, i have very little experience running a small business like this. If anyone has advice to offer regarding best wholesale options (I've been looking at Salehoo but have seen some bad reviews), alternatives to Ebay (if Ebay is not the best way to go), or how to run a business in general, i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. moreResolved Question: Are there any products out there that u can buy wholesale and be able make a good profit?
I really want to get an internet business started. I'm thinkin about starting up an ebay account and self educating myself about online business and how to really turn a profit. I want to know what actually sells and what products to go for and resell.I wonder if there are different products out there that u can buy for cheap in some countries and sell high in others. moreResolved Question: Paypal have limited my account, and it's caused so much trouble!?
Before I begin - apologies for rambling on, I'm angry! Ok so, In April I sold 2 pairs of Michael Jackson tickets. Obviously he passed away, so I had to give the 2 buyers their money back. My account was then limited for some reason, which meant I could not send any money, or receive, attach funds to the account or anything. There was no information on my account on how to give the buyers their refunds and I was so confused. Eventually a case was opened to allow me to confirm a refund to one of the buyers, so I gave the full refund back to this particular buyer. Nothing came through for the other buyer, so I had no idea how to send her the money. I gave her a message on ebay to tell her my account was limited and I would get the refund to her when possible. A few months down the line, my account was still limited so I rang customer services. They told me it was because I had not refunded someone, so I got them to do it for me over the phone. A few more months down the line, account still limited. My account is now -£144, and I can't add funds to cover it because my account is limited! Customer services are absolute rubbish, so has anyone got any experience with paypal, or any helpful advice? I wanted to start my jewellery business off, but pretty hard without paypal. moreResolved Question: What are some good tips for starting a babysitting business?
I am an American Girl doll fan, and I am trying to save up...well...$900 to buy American Girl Mia's Whole World on ebay. $900 is a lot of money, so of course I wouldn't ask a family member to buy it for me. I want to save up as much money as I can to add to my jar. My birthday is coming up here in May, and last birthday, all together I got $245 (some of it was gift cards though). So I thought if I were to just add all my extra change/dollar bills, change I find on the street or around the house, money for odd jobs (which doesn't happen very much), and birthday money then maybe I could get $300-$400. I want to have the $900 around September though, because it gets MORE AND MORE expensive as time goes on (Mia isn't sold anymore), so I was thinking about starting a babysitting business. I babysit for these two people like once ever 2 months. I usually get between $15 and $20. This will help once I babysit again, but it's just NOT ENOUGH. So I want to figure out how to run a babysitting business BEFORE I talk to my mom about it. I just need some tips! Some things I need to know: 1) What should my fliers look like? 2) What is a good price p/hour or p/kid for the job? 3) I don't want to babysit babies, because I'm really bad at managing them. I can babysit starting at maybe 4 and ending at maybe 9, how to I write that on a flier? 4) Where should I post my fliers? 5) How should I meet with the people possibly BEFORE the night/day of the job? 6) If I get it figured out, should I make an email address for my business? Because I don't want to put my phone number on a flier and have it public. 7) Should I make a free website or something for more information and when I am booked or whatever? THESE ARE THINGS I REALLY NEED TO KNOW! Please and thank you for the help. :D You rock! PS The reason I want to do this so bad is because this Mia Whole World thing is VERY important to me and I know I will ALWAYS treasure it. And yes, I NEED it. I know, I'm greedy sometimes. Everyone is. :) moreResolved Question: How can i sell off a huge lot of avon stuff?
My mom sales avon but she gets tempted easily by their sales and buys more than she can sell in the time she has. I want to help her sell off the rest of the items. I think its good experience as a business major and also with my interest in photography. I can take good pics and keep records like a real business. I dont know where to start. Craigslist is too crowded with other sellers, ebay too and you have to pay fees. So how can i sell these off even if it means selling off a few at a time? Are you even allowed to sell on ebay? Can i set up a facebook page and sell on there or thats not allowed? thanks! moreResolved Question: Did Ebay plan from the start to enslave us to our computers buying from huge company's selling on it?
What was once a place for small sellers to sell there nik naks and scrap, has now become a huge corporation for big business's to take up residence---how often do you get re--directed to another pay master when on ebay, half the time Ebay is the middleman sending you off on a mary go round-----was this a plan from the start that we were not told about, and what about the future of high street shopping when everything is being sold on ebay. by 2020 im sure our weekly shop will be available to buy on ebay along with escort agencys and call girls ads everywhere on buy it now, enslaved to our computers and stuck to our chairs and obese, great---------we are practically there already moreResolved Question: Is our miniature Barbie size doll food good enough to sell?
My family, and I have decided to create a business at ebay creating miniature doll food barbie size using Japanese clay. So far we're doing pretty well with the miniatures, but I can't say we're professionals at it yet. But still they are nicely detailed Barbie sized miniatures, and I was wondering if everyone could tell me if they would be willing to pay for them if they were avid doll collector's, and such, and maybe how much they would pay for each. What advice can you provide?
I have always seen those ads saying that you can make a fortune with an eBay business, however I truly believe that the only ones who are making a fortune are those who are selling information on making a fortune. However, I believe that I can make (after a while) a couple of hundred dollars per month. I intend to start small, selling a few items at a time, and eventually building up the business. I want to know, preferably from current eBay sellers, what it's like to sell on eBay as a business. 1.How do you get your merchandise? 2.How much do you profit? 3.What administrative issues do you have? 4.What are your additional operating costs do you have? 5.what additional advise can you give me? What Could I do become a millionaire by age 22 or 27 starting now at age 18? Please, I really need someones help or advice as I'm desperate. Thanks. moreVoting Question: Paypal froze my account, said will close it, hijacked $2500... anyone else?
This is me right now... January 29 to current: I sold a series of products on ebay during january. 150 to be exact All were paid for, and almost all left positive feedback. Almost all, meaning, some haven’t left feedback yet. But feedback is 100%, with perfect sales ratio’s, because “all” my customers are happy. After the sales cycle finished, Paypal froze my account and ALL monies in the account. They demanded copies of my invoices and inventories. I provided what they asked for. – After this, they then started asking for contracts and agreements between my vendor and their wholesaler. This is not legal to ask, and they are requiring the impossible, knowing full well I cannot provide that legally. It is a trap, so they don’t have to release my funds of $2,453.89. They are threatening to hold onto my money for 180 days (6 months), by requiring me to commit criminal activities, to receive the moneys that is already mine, not theirs. I sent them an official letter asking them to release my monies, or I would pursue legal actions, including complaints. They responded by saying “Go Ahead”, we’re still going to hold “your” money for 180 days (6 months). They (paypal staff) are fully aware they asked me to commit crimes, but do not care, since I am not legally able to record “their” phone conversation asking me to do so. Update for today: Many of my customers have contacted paypal and said everything is genuine, no problems, nothing. Paypal has told most of them it is none of their business or lied and said my account isn’t even frozen…. But, today, I also got a final DENIED, we’re going to hold you funds for 180 days, but you can provide refunds if you like…. And then, close it for security reason (mainly because i caught them in no so legal business practices). They seem to not care, or care about the fact that I have been a good ebayer and long time customer of Paypal with a 290 rating there. They just wanted my money and decided I am not a huge corporation, so it would be easy to take it. So, here is my question... How many of you have they done this to also? moreResolved Question: What is a good business to start?

Both the USPS website and PayPal seem to only give the options to ship Express International, Priority Internationally and other options that are just too expensive. Thanks in advance. moreVoting Question: DO you have to have a business license to sell on Ebay and how would I claim taxes at the end of the year.?

I'm looking for advice from anyone who does ebay as a business. I have been selling my clothes and bags on ebay to have some money while I'm in college and sometimes sell for friends and family. I have been thinking about doing it as a business as I have read some success stories of people buying and reselling full time. The questions that I have are about taxes, and running an ebay business. I am familiar with ebay and paypal and everything but what I don't understand is the "business" side. 1. I still have a lot of my personal items to sell that I won't be making a profit on.... how do I prove these items are mine and not purchased to re-sell? Should I sell the rest of them before I start doing it as a business? 2. I plan to get a lot of my inventory from garage sales and thrift stores, but I can't get a receipt from a garage sale, how do I prove how much I paid for something without a receipt?! And also, some stores don't even itemize things you buy (for example, at tj maxx if you buy 5 clothing items, it will say 'womens clothing' 'juniors clothing'/etc... and then a barcode, it doesn't say "Juicy couture size small peacoat")... so if I really had to prove how much I paid for something wouldn't it be rather difficult? If I keep a detailed list of how much I paid for things at yard sales, will that be sufficient enough? 3. Is it necessary to meet with an accountant and get a tax id number before I start this? Is it expensive? If for some reason, I don't make any money re-selling, it would have been a waste. Thanks in advance for any advice. I can be paranoid but I just want to be extra careful that I go about this the correct way. moreResolved Question: How can I get a credit card?

How to do that?
Hi everyone, Recently, I'v been finding myself a little broke. So, I decided to try and pursue an online business. I would like to do a Zippo Lighter sale site (I collect zippos), or maybe car audio sales. But, I'm not sure where to start. I know I need to find a website host, that I will need my own website, and I will need to get the product from the supplier. I heard about this thing called drop shipping, where I never actually see the product, but get orders from the customer and send those orders to the factory where they ship it to the customer, and I keep a small difference between my price and the factories price. Can anyone give me more details on that? And how can I be a part of that? I also need to know how I would get payment; what do I use to collect paypal, mastercard, etc? Thats about all I know about this, can someone point me in the right direction and give me an estimate on how much initial fee this is gonna cost? I have like 200 to put into it right now, maybe more soon. I have seen businesses like this already complete for sale on ebay, but never bothered to bid and to go ahead and try making it on my own. THanks a ton everyone! moreResolved Question: How would i get in contact with a polymer clay wholesaler? And what would i say?
I want to start my own business on eBay. I have an idea, but i don't have the stock... lol there is a lady on ebay and her store is called morezmore, i don't want to go out and say can i have the number to your supplier. so does anyone have an idea of how to contact a supplier, like what to say to them, and perhaps a program to teach you how to make a business from scratch in college or something. *scratches head* Additional Details i understand the basics of wholesaling i KNOW you buy a large quantity- that's exactly what i want. Yes i know that college would not be a super helpful source for info but it would help me with my bookkeeping, i am very unorganized. i was asking as far as a business class or something like what area to study in. Morezmore has made countless tutorials for dummies on how to sell package and ship your product, and i had majored in graphic design for 4 years before my father died i know how to market my product. I just don't have a WHOLESALE supplier! I looked on the web but when you type in "wholesale supplier" it's quite difficult to just FIND one especially when there dealing in polymer clay. moreResolved Question: how to make money for a 16 year old?

my husband and I are married for 7 years now. when we were newly wed he was still setting up his career and I encouraged him to try different paths. He tried several things and now finally he seems to be in a good path( he had a pay comparable to mine all along though- only did not like the field he was on). He however revolted me going to work when we were newly wed. I managed to get a job and have been working for 4 years now and have a steady profession. I was all along trying to get our family up, clear debt, buy home such. We have a joint account to which my pay and his pay were deposited. Now we are in a decent state, have a home, kid and trying to save some money. he has started a new career path and seems working good for now. he opened a separate account- like a new business account. He has another separate savings account(created 2 yrs back) to which i have been adding money from my pay check. So now i feel our joint account is being used for all house hold expenses and he has a separate savings, business checking account. His pay from this new business now goes to either of these separate accounts. I have access to view the accounts. However feel being used. I love him and think he loves me too. I'm not sure how to bring this up and worried if will cause issues in marriage. We already have usual fights over simple things and unsure how to start this finance discussion.i have never talked about our finances to him since marriage. He spends on stocks, ebay, saying he is trying to save for us and been managing the finance of the house. I hardly spend other than buying kids stuff. If i bring up the discussion I'm sure he would say he is doing for all of us. but then why does he make sure i put my paychecks to the joint account. And puts his income on his name now. Please help and no spam in answers plz. moreResolved Question: My stuff always gets deleted on ebay. What to do to stop this!?
I just closed my Personal accounts on eBay and opened up a brand new business one. So all I can sell are designer goods. 100% authentic designer and every time I list something it gets flagged for fraud. I am a good person who runs an honest business. I did start at the bottom, hell the first item I ever sold was a "iPod for parts or repair". So what I am asking is how can I get around these people and get them to stop taking my items off line. (one last rant) The one thing that really gets to me is that they say "We didn't target you...its how you listed it" I even provided photos of the authenticity card! What more do they want. PS: So if anyone can tell me how to get around the "man" that would be great! moreResolved Question: How would I go about starting a business? also I need advice. Thanks.?
Ok, I am 14. I understand I am quite young but, I really would like to start a business. Something where I could put my creative, and imaginative personality to good use. I was thinking of making holiday related decorations. Maybe for Christmas I could make gift baskets, Christmas tree decorations. And other related items. I also thought about making jars with dry ingredients for certain kinds of cookies. I am only 14 and I don't have a lot of money to start off with but how should I go about starting out? How should I sell the items and sort of advertise them. I was thinking over Ebay or Craigslist. Maybe sell them at a flea market or something. What would be some good ideas? and what other kinds of items would you be interested in buying? Also since I am only 14 how could I prove that I am responsible and that all of this is going to good use and is legit...I was thinking about having a percentage of my earnings go towards a charity or towards a local food pantry. Also any other information that may help me? Thanks. moreResolved Question: Should I invest my money and start a business?

Hi, I am starting my own jewellery website business from home, I started on Ebay but decided I would like to work more professionally. I have a domain and website, I have stock, I have receipts for my stock with VAT etc. I have registered as self employed (to which I haven't received anything to say I my registration was successful- I don't if I am to receive anything?). I haven't made anything via my website yet but I don't know what to do next? I have the forms to register the business but I don't know if this is the next step? I haven't the money for an adviser, I have bought books and have a friend who is a business teacher but no one can seem to tell me what next, in PLAIN ENGLISH! I will be extremely grateful if anyone could give me any idea so I have a sense of direction because I am getting extremely stressed and frustrated, I can work hard and looking forward to just getting on with it, but have no idea what to get on with, I want to start advertising and selling items but I am worried incase I am not prepared to start sales- I obviously know how to except sales pack and post etc as I have been doing it for ages via ebay as a top rated seller but I mean prepared from a professional business point of view. Please someone help me!!! moreVoting Question: How can I accomplish this?
Basically, I have a lot of debt to pay off to my parents for some things I have done. I went through my closet and found so many "gently used" clothes, that I thought I could maybe sell them online. Thing is, they are really nice clothes in really nice condition, and selling them to thrift stores unfortunately will not give me the proper amount of money I need. So, I thought I would advertise my stuff online. I have an account on a website where I present pictures of the clothes I have and how much they go for, and if anyone is interested in them, they can email my 'business' email account or order from my eBay account. Although this is a start, I have a feeling I won't get the money I need in time. I wanted to ask for your help, anyone, of what I can do to advertise and sell my clothes by Christmas time, so maybe my parents can get the money back that they deserve. What else can I do to make sure I at least get some profit? What are some pointers and advice you can give me to help me expand my business a bit? I would just like to sell them decently. (Also, if any of you are actually interested...they're girl clothes only, for the time being, and sizes Small-Large. These are coming from a teenager [with the help of mom]. If you actually are interested to at least look at what I have, you can ask me for the site address if you'd like...) moreVoting Question: Online business options with $500-$600 start-up?
I'm 20 years old still in college. I recently got laid off along with everyone else in our department. It's almost impossible to find a job that pays more than minimum wage. I have about $500 to start-up an online business. I have a little selling experience with eBay when I was 16 I bought vintage cameras from swap meets and sold them online. I've been looking into drop shipping but, from what I've heard it doesn't work. Is there any business I can start online and work from my laptop with little experience? I want to make $1,500-$2,000 a month and I think that's fair and realistically possible. What are my options? Detailed answers would help along with how long it would take to start actually making a profit. Right now the only things I've come across were drop shipping and I have a friend that can wholesale me jewelry but, it looks like eBay has gone way down hill. Any help is much appreciated. moreResolved Question: i cant start my ebay business?

Hi guys, please recommend me a list of good books for someone who has not start a business before and would like to start one soon. I will be in the service sector selling watches and clock mainly in my shop. I will also be selling on my website and on ebay. Please give me a list of good books that 1) teach me the basic of starting a business (the must-do and must not do) 2) how to promote/market and sell my business and service both in a physical shop and on website/ebay. 3) how to choose shop locations, how to advertise my service, how to get rapport with customers. I know one book will not summarize all this factors, so please give me a list of books. The more books the better, as long as the books teach the above questions. And lastly, does anyone recommend this book Start Your Own Business by Rieva Lesonsky ? Good reviews on amazon, but I would like to hear more about it. Thanks.
