Cabinet to discuss criminals in mortgage business

The state's failure to keep criminals from working in the mortgage business is up for discussion by Gov. Charlie Crist and the Florida Cabinet.

The panel, which oversees the Office of Financial Regulation, meets Tuesday.

The office allowed more than 10,000 people with criminal records to work in Florida's mortgage industry between 2000 and 2007, according to a Miami Herald investigation.

One Cabinet member, Alex Sink, the state's chief financial officer, wants the panel to pass an emergency rule to stop the practice. Sink also has called for agency head Don Saxon to resign.

Productive meeting between Parry, business community

In his opening remarks, Premier Parry noted how pleased he was to see so many business owners responding to the call to put an end to the spate of criminal activity in Nevis.

During the meeting, Parry articulated several ways in which he thought the business community could assist in stemming the crime wave on the island. Among these was the idea of having members adopt a school, a community or a child and create avenues whereby our young people could engage themselves positively and productively. He reminded the audience that while the government is committed to doing its part, the rest of the society must also play an active role if we are to realise a significant reduction and possible eradication of serious criminal activity on the island. more

Blackwater May Have Fudged Numbers to Get $100M in Contracts

"Blackwater or its affiliates obtained…a total of 39 contracts that were set aside for small businesses even though the bidder may not have met SBA's criteria to be considered a small business," the report said.

Congressman Henry Waxman (D-California), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, requested an investigation in March into the possibility that Blackwater "improperly exploited this "independent contractor" designation." According to Waxman's request, "Blackwater obtained small business contracts without competing with other qualified bidders that properly designated their guards as employees."
