Given the Mariners' state of affairs, it was no surprise that the one bad inning made the difference Monday night as the Boston Red Sox extended Seattle's losing streak to seven games with a 5-3 victory at Safeco Field.
Opening a nine-game homestand, the Mariners for the second game in a row played well only to see it slip away in the late innings. They got eight innings of good pitching. They played great defense, headlined by one of the best catches of Ichiro Suzuki's career. They looked like a different team than the one that kept embarrassing itself on the last road trip.
But at this point, playing mostly good baseball doesn't provide any solace. This team doesn't need positive signs or good showings. It needs wins, and it needs them now.
"There's some encouragement, but we're just looking for a win," dispirited Mariners manager John McLaren said. more
How to Tell a Great Vacation Story
It's a question you'll hear at business dinners, conferences, client meetings and friendly get-togethers. And you'll want to be prepared to tell a good story. The good news is, you don't have to relate a boring yarn. In fact, you really shouldn't be, because storytelling is also an essential business skill, says Chip Heath, co-author of Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die. "We often think of the stories [people] tell as a form of entertainment, but they are a way of letting people know what you're like, and what you're about. Your listener is evaluating you as someone they'll potentially do business with, and they're listening for how you respond to challenges," he says. They're also a great way of building rapport, says Lea Thau, executive director of The Moth, a New York-based organization that promotes and teaches the craft of storytelling. more

Open Question: How do I get my dog to pee/poop outside alone?
I have an 9 month old pug pup, who refuses to go outside by herself. I take her out regularly. The problem is if someone doesn't stay out with her, she will scratch at the door and whine/bark. This hasn't really been a problem for the summer, but with the colder weather starting soon, I don't really want to be standing out there with her in -30 weather. She is crate trained for night and when we are out. She is taken out as soon as I get up in the morning and right before I go to bed at night. She is also taken out quite frequently throughout the day. I'm not looking to leave her outside for long periods. I would just like for her to be able to go do her "business" without having to go with her. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get her to go by herself? Please help! moreOpen Question: employee sue mcdonalds for dog bite?
I work at Mcdonalds and today the power went out so they asked me to go put a sign on the speaker box that says "sorry no power, we're closed temporarily" So while i was out there doing this there was a man in the drive thru with his dog in the back seat (which i didn't see) so i told him "uh sorry sir we have no power we're closed" so he said "oh ok" and when he started to drive away his big dog stuck his head out of the back window and bit my arm and wouldn't let go and i started to drag with the car until I yelled and he stopped. All he said was "oh did he get ya?" i was like "DUH!" anyway. Anyway I know I can sue him and press charges, but he was pretty nice about it and stuck around and I don't want the dog put down. my question is can i sue mcdonalds and for how much? I am not a greedy person but they are very unprofessional and do a lot of things wrong other then this that they know is wrong and keep doing and everybody that works there knows and they could get into trouble and I've had enough this time. So anyway, my manager (who is the only responsible one there, the rest is run by kids, literally) told me to go to the hospital. My arm has a huge hole in it gushing blood and its so deep and infected and puffed up and bruised. They have a first aid kit which i attempted to use but there was no supplies they are supposed to have in it, only a couple things, which wouldn't be too bad if they ran out but they never had it and never intended to fix it. there was also no manager in charge or injury's on duty with first aid. They didn't call the cops or anything, they said that was up to me to do later when your not here. while i was at the hospital the manager in charge told everybody about my business and what happened in a bad way like it was my fault and that i'm not getting paid no matter what if they have anything to do with it in front of all the staff and customers. Also when contacted they kept telling me i probably won;t get paid for that day or the rest of my days off and neither would the worker they told to drive me or my bf who was a witness and had to come and give a statement. they told her to drive me because they wouldn't pay me for a cab and i thought a manager was supposed to accompany you anyway? Whenever i would ask about my pay and injury they would say i don't know, and i said "well aren't you supposed to be trained to know all this stuff" even the head person in charge of the store kept telling me the same thing until i called the person that owns the store who only acts like he cares when he can get in trouble, this guy never checks on his store and has been told that everybody there has problems and gets underpaid by the legal amounts by alot of money and chooses not to fix anything! Every time you try to contact him you have to ask to use the phone and ask for his number and they ask you things like "why are you calling him?!" "are you telling him something about me" and they say they have to be there when you call him or just stand by you so that you will be scared to say anything. anyway the women in charge of the store he pays to run it finally wrote an incident report when she got there 6 hours later she heard about the power being out and me getting bit, the manager on duty said she didn't want to bother her because she was up the night before late which doesn't matter when they have to bother ther rest of us staff. She kept saying it didn't matter if it happened while you were at work doing something for them, i'm still not getting covered probably. So she doesn't have to pay alot of money or her boss will get mad at HER. Also while i was at the hospital the manager on duty kept trying to ask me to hurry up and come back to work. So can i sue them for any of the following reasons? because I got bit by a dog while at work, on the clock doing something they asked me to do? are they supposed to wait until the drive thru is clear from cars to send me out? is there any law or animal by-law that says mcdonalds is supposed to have a sign up that say no dogs like that are allowed in drive thru or allowed to be axcess to hurt people? is your boss supposed to know about your pay and what your covered for? are they aloud to harass and fight with you and try and convince you your not covered when you are? or even if they don't know if workers comp doesn't pay will they have to because they don't have the right comp package? can you sue for them trying to make you come back to work or hurry up with an injured arm? or for talking about personal or business information to customers and employees when your not there and bad mouthing you? for not having a first aid worker on duty? or for nothavingg any first aid kit supplies? for not calling the cops? can u sue for the moreOpen Question: Can employee of Mcdonalds sue for getting bit in drive-tru?

I am 19 years old and in an undetermined amount of time- just some time in the future I will be getting an Aussie Shepherd. They are my favorite breed, I even love the mixes- they are just so adorable. I have worked with one before, when I was training my neighbor's dog. He was really fast at learning new tricks and seemed so happy and lively. Are they all like that? I just love how long of training sessions I could have with that dog and how long he would play frisbee with me. Biggest problem I have is that I have heard that they are bad with small children. I have a baby brother and he is 3 years old and I have a step brother and he is 8 years old. The 8 year old is always gentle with animals but the three year old is not so much. I live in an extended family situation. The other part that I feel makes it not a good choice for an aussie is that I live in a town home. On paper it looks really bad. But considering I have a 7 mile long trail I could walk him down everyday, does it make it better? Living with family has some great advantages. Number one is that there is ALWAYS someone home to watch my little brother and the puppy and 98% of that time, that person is me. Everyone is home at least 50% of the time. I love to walk down long trails, play frisbee, and train anyone else's dog that will let me. I have wanted a dog for a long time. I am outside and active at least 2 hours a day. I really want the intelligent aussie because I want to start my own dog training business and he could be just another part of my resume and my best friend. If I shouldn't pick an aussie shepherd considering the three year old and the town home, what breed should I pick? Are they as happy and willing to learn? moreVoting Question: How do I start my own Dog Training and Dog Walking Business?
I am 19 years old. I know what I am best at and that is dog training and walking. I already have 3 references for dog training. and 2 for dog walking. I have been trying to get hired by companies but nobody is hiring me. So I think I must start a business of my own. What steps should I take to do this? Do I need a business license for this? If so, how hard is it to get one? Does it cost money? (cause I don't have any money because I have never been hired.) I am just so sick of not being able to do anything about not being employed. I can't even get government aid of any kind to help me out till I can get a job. Like I don't even own a bra I am so poor. I have no presentable clothing...might be why I am not getting hired- but I don't have any money for anything. moreVoting Question: Need help but don't know how to begin?
I hate to be all doom and gloom but I have so many overwhelming responsibilities, I don't even know where to begin #1, #2 I don't know how to get help. I need an employee or a personal assistant that has knowledge of how to organize - basically I don't want to babysit someone but I know everyone needs training - i work from home, I have issues that involve only me to be able to handle, insurmountable loads of paperwork - tax issues, business issues, taking care of my ill mother in laws paperwork/dog/bird, my three kids now going back to school, but that just means my day will never be done with dinner and homework help - worried about my new kindergartner not knowing how to get lunch with an ID card - i have a meeting with an accountant tomorrow, plus trying to save 2 homes in foreclosure - I am a mess. I'm going up on Monday after I know my kids are safe and sound for 1st day of school and enrolling myself in our local community center because they have a gym and it's only $60.00 a year because I know I need to start taking better care of myself. i also know i can barely afford to pay our bills let alone hire an assistant. I just can't get my head unstuck living in limbo not knowing if I'm going to be booted out of my house day to day - Aaahh my husband clearly is trying to work as hard as he can to put food on the table so he doesn't have a lot of freed up time. How or where would I go to look for a personal assistant?Well 1st of all the gym is only $60.00 a year and I can't just keep myself dooped up in my house all day feeling lonely - I don't think that is healthy. Have you tried excersizing in AZ during the day outside? moreResolved Question: my 12 week old male puppy does small pees on the carpet after he has already peed outside. how can i stop him?
i have had my 12 week old male puppy for a few days, i expected him to need to be potty trained but he has never had any accidents over night, i take him out at 10pm and then he is clean until 6am when i take him out again, he has paper down but never uses it. i take him out every hour and he does his business on the grass no problems, i praise him and say 'good toilet' (same command i used for my old dog to go) and give a treat. today he has started going outside doing his business and then coming straight back in and doing a tiny patch of pee on the carpet, not raising his leg like he is scent marking but just a tiny pee on the floor. he has done this several times today, it happens to quick to move him to his paper as its such a small pee, i don't make a fuss, i just clean it without praising/punishing him. is his behaviour normal? how can i stop this? he is the first male puppy i have had so im not sure what to do. please help. moreVoting Question: How do you stop a dog from doing his business IN the house?
My dog is 8 years old. He has been "potty" trained since he was a puppy. We keep him caged when we go out because if we let him roam the house, we always come home to a nasty package waiting for us. Now, he is starting to pee in his cage when we go out for no reason. Then when it storms, he decides to pee while we are home! I really do not know what to do at this point....he is getting worse. HELP! moreResolved Question: dog walking problems...help?
**LONG QUESTION, DONT SAY I DIDNT WARN YOU** okay, so i have a dog walking sort of business, its just local and i have a few people whose dogs i walk. so anyway, sometimes some people ask me to help train their dog to stop pulling so much on the walks as well, which i do and usually has pretty good results. however, there is one lady with a tiny, adorable shitzu that moved in across the street. she heard about my dog walking, and she asked me to walk her dog occasionally. i agreed, but her dog was a MASSIVE puller, and just pulled everywehre, onto everyone and once even tied me up with his leash! i asked the lady for permission to help teach her dog to walk nicer, and she said it was fine. so i started teaching him nicely, i just stopped walking when he started pulling, called him back to my side, and continued. i still let him sniff around and go to the bathroom, but just so he would be at the persons side and not jumping around everywhere, and so he would hold up his paw to pee. then a month later, the woman came to me and said i had ABUSED her dog. she said that her dog was walking behind her all the time, and wasn't running around excitedly on the leash anymore, that i took away his 'spark'. i tried to explain, she wouldnt listen and is trying to find out what 'drug' i put her dog on. now, im losing customers because of what she has said to neighbors, but i never abused her dog in any way, i would NEVER hurt any dog, i just taught him to be a good leash walker humanely. how do i get myself out of this situation??? moreResolved Question: How to train a chihuahua to use a newspaper to pee?
Ok, so i got this chihuahua a couple of months ago from my mom's friend. When we got her she was trained to do her business on a newspaper. But then we kinda stopped putting newspaper around to do her business on (big mistake) and now she only poos and pees on our living room carpet and its really starting to stink. Can someone help me reteach my dog to pee and poo on a newspaper. Thanks! And its not that shes not allowed to pee outside but everytime we take her outside to pee she just ends up barking at the neighborhood dogs and go after people and start barking like crazy. And in my neighborhood most of our neighbors have at least 1 dog. And she get distracted really easy. And we tried taking her in our backyard but she just ends up barking at our neighbor's dogs as well. And we tried putting her on leash while she goes outside to pee but she just bites on it and pulls. moreResolved Question: What would attract you to use a dog walker?
I am looking into starting my own business as a dog walker/sitter. I am thinking about charging £6 for 30mins or £10 for a hour (there is a well known dog walker in my area that charges £8 for 30mins and £12 for an hour). I could offer socialization with other dogs/pets. Walking in countryside to inner city. Basic training for puppies to adult dogs. Maybe a day care service too. I am a bit worried about how much money I would make as I need to make about £55 a day (before worrying about running a car). I am thinking most people would want you to come round at lunchtime for 30mins so I would need at least 9 people a day and to fit them all in at lunch would be a rush! As dog owners what kind of services would you find helpful? I am pretty much up for anything, from training puppies to doing shopping for say an old person who cant get about much. Any tips would be helpful. Many thanks xx moreResolved Question: Dog barking/whining at night?
I have two dogs, one is 8 months old and is crate and potty trained (though on occasion has accidents) At night, they are in their crates in the spare bedroom, but he will very faintly (but loud enough to wake me up and prevent me from getting back to sleep) bark at different times in the night, even if I take him out a little while later he will do it again, a few months ago it got to the point that I had to put his crate in our bedroom every night, but I finally broke him of that and he was doing great, on occasion he would bark once in the middle of the night, other times he slept through the whole night. But now it's back to how it was before I started putting him in our bedroom. He's very good about going outside and doing his business and coming back in, but it's very frustrating since he is waking me up about 4-5 times a night! When I know he can easily hold it through the night. Is there anything I can do? He doesn't get water for a few hours before bed, and I don't think the problem is him needing to go out, I think it's more of him wanting attention or wanting to be close to us. Any advice?!?! (He's a lab/Husky mix) moreResolved Question: How to stop my puppy from agressively biting? and also does he have anger issues?
I have a japanese spitz puppy who is nearly a adult, 8 months old. Ever since i first bought him at 8 weeks old we have been dealing with his biting. He has been to puppy school and obedience school. The instructors at the obedience school told me that he was a very dominat puppy, and so people had to be careful when patting him on the head and stuff. They were also pretty shocked by his biting and said that he has a trigger point where he kind of just snaps. I dont think his biting is for play, but maybe its for attention im not sure. He bites playfully when new people come to pat at him. But he can start biting agressively if people are patting or touching him around his body or like sometimes my dad holds him on his lap and he will start getting really angry and biting at him. he also bites when i am training him to do things like stay down between my legs etc. Also sometimes i am just lying on the floor minding my own business and he will come attack me and my hands! He will start agressively barking at me, running in to nip and pull at me, pull my hair, although he does control his biting on my skin at this time. He just kind of puts his mouth over my skin and then backs off and comes back. If i ignore him, he just keeps doing it, and if i retaliate he gets even more angry and crazy. Any ideas on why he does this? or what i should do in these situations? (sometimes i redirect him to get a toy) I have tried time outs Ignoring Confronting him by shaking him by the scruff of the neck smacking him on the nose (lightly. i was told to do so by many many people, including the obedience ppl, but this just makes it worse i think) putting him on his back the loud "ouch!" i would just really like to know what other people would do. its really distressing when ur dog bites and has anger problems. ;( i really would like to be able to pat him without him getting angry and biting me!no the breeder is very very veeeery reputable . The jap spitzs that she had at her house were all sooooooo lovely and calm and most of the pups she sells end up as show dogs. My puppy was trouble from birth. He dominated over all his littermates and his mother. >.< i picked the bad seed. lol. moreResolved Question: Do you think I had a right to do what I did?
My sister knows this girl who runs around in kumar/niqab, went to hajj and brings up deen whenever possible. However, this girl talks about people, belittles people or uses others misfortunes to talk about how great she is. From the moment I met her she began talking about my sister, saying things like "she never stops talking.......I never really liked her that much............I don't even know why I'm her friend." I kept quiet for the sake of my sister because she has been friends with my sister for over 5 years and my sister never has anything mean to say about this girl. On my second meeting with this girl she began to not only bad mouth my sister, but my sisters young children, calling my sister's 3 yr old son a "kalb" (which means dog in arabic) and told another visitor who stopped by with her to smack my nephew for being "bad." My newphews offense was bringing out his train tracks and asking her to play with him. My sister was in the kitchen and so I went over to her and told her I was beginning to feel very uncomfortable and told her what her friend was saying and how she was acting. My sister told me to let it go and that she didn't care because her friend loved her even though she sometimes was a bit irrational. So I let it go and didn't say anything. On another occassion, at my sister's dinner party, this girl made a scene during dinner by saying that looking at food made her sick (this girl is easily 250 lbs) and that she couldn't even be in the same room as food. Before any of the guests could even finish dinner she started clearing the table and would no longer talk to anyone. However, the final straw came when my sister was making arrangments for a babysitter and this girl started butting into my sisters business. She kept on saying things such as "you better let this girl babysit for you, she is a muslimah and you better not pick a kaffir over a muslimah" she also started telling my sister she was stupid with money and that she spends it frivilously and that she is a cheapass. For over a week this girl called her daily to tell her that she was "effed up" if she was even thinking about not hiring this girl. My sister is such a timid person she let all of this go. However, this girl posted a fb status message about my sister and when my sister saw it she started crying and called me into the room. At this point I made up my mind, my sister didn't need to have crappy people in her life so I called this girl a betch. This girl completely hit crazy town after that............but she cussed out my sister (who did nothing to her). The friendship has since been destroyed, however, I feel I did my sister a favor. Yet, I still can't help but feel a bit guilty, and although the girl was not a good friend at all, my sister valued what little she gave her. I will not mend their friendship although I do have the power to do that. It kills me that all of this rotten behavior is from a hajja and someone who goes around promoting religion. moreVoting Question: My dog is 20months old and is fully house trained but the last 3 days he has started weeing at the front door?

our dog -- a Carin terrier just turned 1 today. we are having some behavioral issues with him -- an i'm growing very frustrated. problem 1 - he will "steal" something and then take off and not listen to any commands - sit, come, stay, etc. and the "chase is on" until we corner him. i know you shouldn't chase him -- but there are some things that he grabs that if he swallowed them would cause damage. the other day -- he took off with a business card -- so i didn't chase him -- and he ate it. couldn't get him to drop it. but a few weeks ago he took off with a large college class ring - my husbands. that is not the type of thing you'd want him to swallow. any ideas? problem 2 -- he will play bite. mainly with me. it's random. he will just come up to me on the couch and start nipping and lunging at me. the more you tell him to stop the more he does it. the only way to get him to stop is to get up and move. but it doesn't solve the problem - only temporarily. any ideas? of course we've tried many things -- he isn't responding to much. he seems to be responding to clicker training some, but not sure how to use clicker training with the stealing/chasing thing. thanks for any help -- even if there is a helpful website -- whatever.so far (first 2 answers) -- been there done that - -all of it! moreResolved Question: Is Karen Pryor dog training program worth it?
My wife is thinking about enrolling for Karen Pryor dog trainer program (http://www.karenpryoracademy.com/). It takes four months and costs around $5500. I was wondering if anyone has any idea about how much this program is worth doing for starting a new business. We have recently moved to central NJ and don't know about the kind of demand for a dog trainer from this academy. Do people seek out Karen Pryor certified trainers? How does one go about starting a home business with this certificate? Any ideas/suggestions welcome.I want to emphasis that we are trying to understand the prospectus of acquiring this certification. In other words, will it pay off in the end? Is it hard to start your own dog training business? Does this certificate help in that? moreResolved Question: Should I report this dog abuse or should i just stay out of it?
Ok so my dad was walking the dog this morning (who is a westie called Oscar) as he does every morning and he took them to the park. so there's this other westie called Jock and no one likes this dog because he is so vicious, he attacked a Spaniel and nearly ripped its ear off literally, but i don't think its the dogs fault, his owner hits him, but i don't mean just a little slap on his backside i mean batters him. so today my dad met the man who owns the dog (i don't know his name) and Jock was there, Jock and Oscar had a sniff at each other then Jock started growling and baring his teeth like the mad dogs you see on the tv and his owner held his tail and head and flipped him over on his side and flung him on the ground and held his mouth and face and punched him on the shoulder full force and the dog bit him dog he punched it on the face and warned the dog to stop. the man let the dog back up and the dog started growling and so the man grabbed his tail and head and flipped him over again and flung him to the ground and kneeled on Jock's face with all his weight on his knee and holding his face once again and the dog bit him again so the man started punching his face again. then he started shouting at the dog saying "you just wont learn will you?" at the dog, my dad just told the man to keep his dog away from ours and the man said ok and apologized and my dad just walked away because my dog was getting scared. look im not one to interfere in other peoples business and im not going to tell anyone how to train their dogs, but i think this is really really wrong. i told my dad to report it but he said its the mans dog and he can do whatever he wants with it and the dog cant be changed because he is a couple of years old and told me to stay out the mans business, according to other people in theneighbour hoodd who have dogs its not just a one off thing, he does it quite often and i think one of these days he is going to kill his dog if he hits it hard enough. however viscous the dog is i don't think he deserves to be treated like that, westies are supposed to be cute cuddly and fun to play with but that man has made him into a monster and i don't think he deserves to be treated like this. so should i report this or just stay out of the mans business and not do anything about it? but i think this is really really wrong moreResolved Question: Dogs save poo for in the house?
I have two dogs, one big one and one small one. Both of them have been trained, however the bigger one was adopted from the Humane society. They are both males, however the larger one has been neutered. we walk them for an ample amount of time each day before we start our day, and they will mark their territory and take care of their business outside, but I have noticed that both of them save both their poo and urine for indoors too. They wait until we leave, and then when we come back, they've done something. They are jealous of each other when it comes to our attention, so I think it's a way they're marking territory indoors, but how can I break them of this habit? It's making our house smell really bad. Before we got the bigger one, I would actually watch my smaller dog hold in some and I would wait outside with him for 30 minutes to an hour extra to see if he would do anything else. He never did, until we got back in the house. He's lived around other dogs before, but it doesn't matter the gender, he still would do this. moreVoting Question: Question to Vet Techs-Honest Answers Wanted!!!?
I am thinking about going back to school to be a Vet Tech and looking for some honest advice: 1. Where did you go to school/cost? 2. How much did you make starting out-do you get raises? 3. Was it hard finding a job? 4. How many times have you been hurt by an animal-bites, strached, etc? 5. Where you able to live on your own with your salary? 6. What's your schedule like-do you work every Saturday? 7. Are you glad you become a Vet Tech? 8. Do your coworkers really get on you if you cry when an animals is put down-I heard a lot of people get made fun for this? I was working at a pet boutique and I cleaned up many messes in my time there-doesn't really phase me, not my fav part of my job but didn't bother me. I have been biten a few times by dogs while working there-again not pleasant but it comes with the job. I think the part I'm most concerned about going back to school is people saying I have to put animals to sleep and that I will be covered in barf, pee, and poop-I don't really want that to become a daily thing would like that to be a once in a blue moon kind of thing. I love animals and would like to get into working as a humane officer and/or starting my own pet business that focuses on holistic/natural/made in the usa aspect of the business-but cater to all animals not just dogs. If I start my business I want to do something to give back to my community and help out animals. I figured being a vet tech would be helpful when and if I do open my own store (I'd like to start on online and then grow to a storefront location). I also love helping to train animals-I always stop and pick up strays and help them with training and other issues. I heard you can specialize in different areas I would be interested in holistic methods and surgery ( I LOVE that kind of stuff!) but it seems alot of people like the surgery aspect of this field so seems like competition would be tough-even like emergency medicine seems like it would be interesting.I should add the reason I'm worried about working Monday's so much is because I do flyball and tournaments/practices are usually on the weekends moreVoting Question: How do you housebreak an older rescue dog & re-housebreak the other dogs in our home?
We found an adult (1 or 2 years old, vet isn't sure) dachshund six weeks ago. No one has claimed her (placed ads online & in paper, etc.), and since the shelter is full & she loves our kids & dogs we are keeping her. Our 2 other indoor dogs (female English Spring Spaniel, age 8 years & male Shizu/Pom mix, age 2 years) WERE housetrained prior to our rescuing the other dog. The newbie isn't trained, and now the other 2 dogs seem to have forgotten their training as well. They pee & poop on rugs, carpet, the floor, you name it. The older dogs did not start this until two weeks after the rescue dog appeared. The older dogs will still do business outside (we praise & treat) but also add to the inside. The dogs get along & play together/sleep together/etc. and all are fixed, so the only thing spoiling our happily ever after is the housebreaking issue. What do I do to get the crew on track? moreResolved Question: How to deal with a noise sensitive dog?
We have a 10 month old golden and we're dealing with a noise sensitivity issue and wondering if anyone can help. (not to be ungrateful to those wishing to provide input, but please only people who've experienced this problem or people with extensive dog knowledge respond) For the vast majority of noises she's perfectly fine - there's nothing in our house or yard that can scare her - even dropping a pan will startle her, but not send her running. She'll just come and investigate. However on several occasions, she's gone into flight reponse, caused by really loud noises outdoors: Some examples: 1. a really loud car break screech. 2. nailguns on construction sites. (there are a bunch of new homes or additions being in our neighbourhood) One nail doesn't appear to be an issue, but repeated nailing has been on a couple of occasions. 3. fireworks at a block party on our street a few weeks ago. 4. a very loud alarm at a local business that went off early one morning as we were walking nearby We let our dog run off-leash in the park and occasionally on walking trails. She's a purebred and her retrieving instincts are solid so she'd be miserable if we didn't do off-leash stuff with her. Her recalls are very good - we work on them constantly - but my concern is that her recalls will not work one of these times where a noise frightens her into flight response. Here's how we've trained her: we live in big city, but with lots of green space nearby. We've frequently walked her on busy roads with lots of pedestrians. She has no problems with this. We subjected her to pretty much every household object, from vacuum cleaners to lawnmowers. No problem. We've taken her near heavy equipment and garbage trucks in operation. No problem. Loud music, fire engines, etc - no problem. She's been subjected to all of it, and no problems. Also, when she does show some sensitivity, we don't coddle. Rather we distract her and try and get her mind focused on something she likes, e.g obedience for treats, or greeting other people or dogs. Usually this works, but not when the flight response is more intense - she shuts down to food and many obedience commands (though you can see her mind processing them). The episodes I described above were the more intense variety. However, we clearly didn't do as much as we should have with really loud dramatic sounds. Anyway, we've downloaded a bunch of sounds from the 'net e.g. loud thunder, gunshots, fireworks, etc and have started playing them over the stereo in an effort to desensitize. I've read it's good to do it when they're eating and then gradually increase the sound. I should note that while she's generally submissive in nature, she's really good with car travel, water, busy streets, meeting people, and new experiences in general - other than the noise issue, nothing really makes her cower, and no real separation anxiety. So... has anyone else gone through this and how did you deal? Did your dog get better as it got older? (our is still just 10 months, but I know thats old enough for the problem to be potentially be permanent) Thanks in advance for your help!!Sorry, should mention the whole idea here is to add some safety for off-leash situations while in the park or on nature paths. She's on- leash all other times, but this is not a dog to keep on-leash in all situations - she needs to run. moreResolved Question: border collie home alone, again?
the last time i've ask this a few people said "maybe" because i left out the rest of the day. here it is, restated, with the full day schedule: i was planning on getting an 8-10 week old border collie pup (due to some people's response, i think 5-6 month pup would be better) at the last week of june. using the two months of summer break, i would crate train it to be comfortable being confined in a crate for 6 hrs so that when school would restart, it would be easier for the dog to be left alone. when school would start, i would get up 30min before school (also due to some peoples response, i'm going to change it to an hour) and take a jog around town (since the time length had change, i would probably fit in a visit to the park also). the dog will stay home from 7am to 2pm. my mother doesnt leave for work till 8am, so she would feed the dog, allow it to do its business outside, then put it in its crate at 8am. i'll be back home by 2:30pm, take the dog outside to the park/hang out with friends (allow me to elaborate here; my friends are a lot more active than the average group of teenagers. we can entertain a dog for an hour+). on some days i might be with the dog alone, on others i might be with friends (thats what i meant by the slash). the time at the park or hanging out with friends would range from the minimum of 1hr to the maximum of 3hrs. all of this time would be spent entirely outside, no friend's house and slouching indoors. when i get home, i would eat, do my homework, etc. after dinner, a 30min session of mental stimulation will be applied. then a quick 30min jog outside before going to bed at around 11pm. some people in my previous questions wondered how loyal i would be with this schedule of waking up so early and sleeping so late. on a daily basis, i go to bed at around 11:30pm-12am and wake up at 6am. the amount of free time i have is unlimited (or so it would feel like), and i would often spend that time procrastinating on the web or outside with my friends. accommodating to a border collie's need after and before school hours is not a problem for me. on some occasions i would have to wake up at 3am to finish a paper or stay up till 1am because of a project. i am VERY flexible with my sleeping schedule. the only worry i have with the border collie is when i'm at school. i cannot come home in the middle of the day to let the dog out or something like that, but i CAN provide it with as much exercise as it wants. the maximum potential time of exercising in a day would be around 4-5 hours, i believe thats enough to tire out any dog. and remember, on weekends it would be even more intense. one of the main reasons why i wanted a border collie was because of its ability to learn quickly. i have an interest in training dogs and desire to own one because of this (the other reason i'd like one is because i have quite a bit of free time and i'd like a jogging partner). do you still think that a border collie will be absolutely unsatisfied with me? moreVoting Question: My 7 month chihuahua refuses to pee/poo in respectable areas.?
My puppy is really having a hard time with the concept of potty training. When we first brought him home we were told he was trained on newspapers and he did continue using those (with praise and reward afterward), but after two weeks he suddenly stopped and started going all over the house. I have had dogs before so I knew how to access the situation, telling him "no" if I caught him in the act which is 95% of the time. Even during times I don't catch him, I would bring him to his accident, point at it, and say "no." I couldn't take him outside initially, because it was early January and practically snowing everyday and he was abnormally tiny, anxious, and to be frank, quite sickly looking. (All the other puppies were excited and wanted to play while he shied away and shook. I suppose the runt of the litter, but even his breeder cautioned me that he would be a challenge as he was not even that warm to him. By the way, this is totally not the case now as he is constantly by my side, very rambunctious, and filled out.) I was recommended not to take him outside, because he couldn't handle the cold even with a sweater on. So basically from January to now cleaning up accidents has been an everyday task, thank god I have hard wood floors. Although, when it started getting warm out I tried to teach him to use the potty in the courtyard of the apartment complex I live in where the other tenants take their dogs. I'd sit outside with him for close to an hour ten minutes after he ate waiting for him to do his business. Most of the time, it was unsuccessful, but when he did go I praised him and what not. But shortly after, there has been construction done to the building and there is constantly workers outside whom leave their equipment out on the floor so it's not the ideal environment I want him to roam around in. I can't take him for walks because he doesn't have a leash. I know, I know. I should get on that, but I currently don't have the funds to get one even if they are 10-20 dollars. So my next course of action was to just house-train with a potty patch. I really don't mind if he goes to the bathroom in the house if it's on the patch, I'm already used to seeing crap in the house anyway and because of his size there isn't an odor. However, he hasn't even used it once. I tried putting it in various spots he goes to the bathroom the most yet it seems like he's going everywhere but the patch. He knows immediately after he goes that it's wrong, because he runs away and hides since he's afraid of being scolded. I feel like don't even have to say "no" anymore, because he knows it's coming. I really don't know what to do. All the other dogs I have owned seemed to latch onto the idea of potty training fine except for him so I don't feel like I'm doing anything wrong. I already tried taking one of his stools and putting it on the patch/placing him on the patch after his accidents, but he still doesn't get it. Is there any way I get him to use the potty patch? Is this a lost case? Is the dog whisperer really my only option? I really don't want to be confined to hard wood floors for the duration of my life or constantly cleaning up after him every few hours. Please someone, HELP ME.I am not destitute. My car is broken, I can't get to a store that sells affordable leashes. The only store I can walk to is the Three Dogs Bakery and they only carry expensive leashes. I have a crate. He wears a collar. I buy him expensive organic food/treats. He drinks filtered water. I don't shove his nose in his droppings. He is my life, seriously. Please don't criticize me that I can't take care of him, it is very rude and very arrogant to say just because I'm behind on my rent and electricity bill this month that I can't buy him a leash right away. He is fine in all other areas. Sit, come, stay, tricks. He knows what "no" means. (If he starts barking and I say "no", he stops.) moreResolved Question: What am I doing wrong with potty training my dog?
NOTE: I have potty trained 3 dogs in the past. This is the first time this dog is on her own (no brothers or sisters to learn from) and it's proving quite difficult to train her... She is about a year old now, and still doesn't have it down. When I take her outside to do her business, she either does it right away (within 10 seconds or so) or not at all. When she does do it, I give her a treat and lots of praise, and when she does it in the house, I do not punish here, I merely clean up the mess and put the rags outside for her to smell. I've been trying to crate train her lately. How long should I keep my dog in a crate before starting to trust her a little more to come out. I'm taking her out every two hours or so, and if I am even 10 minutes late, she pees inside! Do NOT say I am not trying, or am lazy, because I am trying my best. moreResolved Question: How do I make my boyfriend get rid of his dog?
My fiance has a basset hound that has gotten out of control. It bites me, destroys my things, and drools and sheds all over everything. On occasions I have to take the dog outside, it nips at me sometimes biting me when I try to put the leash on it. I have had to buy 5 pairs of the same shoe because the dog has eaten and destroyed them. It drools all over everything and sheds everywhere-which is affecting my allergies. The problem is,my fiance doesn't do anything about any of it. He knows that I hate his dog and why I hate his dog. Despite this, he doesn't seem to care that I am having problem with his dog. He won't take the time to train it not to do these things, because as he says "basset hounds are stubborn and hard to train". He doesn't punish the dog when it bites me or eats my shoes, and he doesn't even offer to pay to replace or fix my damaged property. I started locking everything of value in the closet so the dog can't get to it-yet my fiance forgets to shut the door quite often resulting in my things being destroyed by his dog. I end up having to clean the apartment because my fiance makes no attempt to do it. (he claims he doesn't have time because he works 50 hours a week) Yet I work 50 hours a week AND I go to school. I have to vacuum the rugs 2 or more times to get all the dog hair off of them. The dog sheds so much I try to keep it off the furniture and rugs to try to keep it from shedding all over everything and dirtying what I just cleaned. My fiance complains about me doing this because he says I am "being mean to the dog" by not letting it get onto the furniture and roll all over the rugs. Not only is this becoming a problem, but my fiance has also humanized this dog to an extent that is absolutely disgusting. He wipes the dogs rear end after it does it's business, he puts baby powder under its armpits so it "dosn't get dry skin", he went out and bought a cd of lullabies for dogs so that the dog doesn't get lonely during the day when we are at work. And to top it all off, we are never able to go anywhere for longer than half a day because he can't leave the dog home alone, with family, or at a kennel because the dog will get "depressed". I believe in loving your pets, but this has gotten absolutely ridiculous. I have tried training the dog myself, which didnt' work-when I wasn't around my fiance let the dog do all the the things that I was trying to train it not to do. After 3 months of trying to train it I gave up. I have suggested that my fiance take it to a trainer, to which he gets offended and claims that he will not waste his money on. I am at wits end-the only thing left to do in my eyes is to get rid of the stupid dog. I have grown to hate this dog, just seeing it in the apartment makes me angry-I don't want to throw away out relationship because of a dog, but I can't live like this anymore. How do I make him get rid of this disgusting dog?! HELP... moreResolved Question: Dog walking for a teenager?
So I'm fourteen, and I already walk my neighbor's two crazy dogs, and I want to start a small dog walking business. I absolutely love animals, and I think that when I get older I want to be in a job involving dogs (I've had training classes in obedience, leash training, and a tiny bit of animal emergency care). I work at the SPCA once a week, where I do volunteering w/ small animals, cats, and dogs. I'm responsible with animals, and I know a lot about dog behavior... (body language, how to keep them distracted when they have barrier frustration, etc.) I think I can keep up a schedule where I can walk dogs from my neighborhood... After school and on weekends (maybe even before school in the morning... but that's just a possibility, I have to consider that one a bit more... haha). I can also do some beginning training (sitting, name recognition [for young puppies, but i don't think i could do that much of that], leash-behavior, barrior frustration, training for the prevention of mild aggresion towards other dogs, some other beginning training. I'm not very good with potty training, or human aggresion prevention, but the others I'm pretty confident about.) I can provide treats for training (and training would probably only take place ton weekends when i have time). I can get reccomendations from the people I work for at the SPCA, and some others (probably the neighbor whose dogs I walk). Is there anyone else I should get recs from? I am a very confident dog walker, but accidents happen, so should I get insured or something? Also... What precautions would I need to take, what would I need to think of before I start this, should I get bonded (I'm fourteen, so I don't know if thats possible), should I make a safety contract, what questions should I ask potential clients, should I put up flyers with my email (should imake a seperate email for clients) and phone number, and is there anything that I'm missing? moreVoting Question: Why does my dog keep peeing in the house?
I have a two year old shih tzu, who was fully potty trained when I got him. I've had him for about 6 months now, and after moving into our new house, he's started going to the bathroom in the house. He's neutered, and we originally use to live in an apartment where we would have to take him for walks so he could go to the bathroom. Now that we live in a house with a yard, we would leave the sliding glass door open for him to go in and out as he pleases. Then we got a doggy door. He knows how to use the doggy door (and that the door would stay open for him to go in and out as hr please all day), he knows he's not suppose to go potty inside, yet he still does. He didn't start this until we moved into our new home, which we've been living in for almost three months now. I feel like he's doing it for attention, or basically doesn't want to go to the bathroom without me present (so he goes inside where I am, rather than stepping outside, doing his business, then coming back in). How do I break him of this habit? I can't just go outside with him every few hours whenever he needs to go. I have a job, and sometimes he is at home with my roommates who aren't going to take him outside when there's a doggy door he can easily use to get in and out. How am I suppose to teach him to go outside to go potty whenever he needs to WITHOUT me taking him? Do I need to go back to basics and crate him, let him out, send him outside, and bring him back, etc, etc? Even then, that means I'm taking him out, when he should be going out on his own. What do I do?He doesn't show any signs of having Cushings or any sort of infection of the kind, he acts perfectly normal. Wants to be with me all the time, loving, healthy appetite, etc..He also gets praised whenever he does go to the bathroom outside, and what not. moreResolved Question: How to start a pet sitting business? (any one with experience??)?
I really need to get some extra cash and I've been wanting to start my own pet sitting business. I'm 19 years old and have a lot of experience with animals. I volunteered for 2 1/2 years at my local humane society (I kept the animals cages and areas clean, I washed dogs, I clipped cats nails, walked dogs, crate trained etc)....I worked for 7 months at a PetSupermarket....and I work at an animal rescue dealing with many different animls incuding exotics and have worked there over a year (I maintain the cleanliness of my building and the cages and animals inside...I feed...wash dishes..and have assisted in handling and medicating animals.) I don't have the house to care for anyones pets at home (I already have 2 birds a dog and a degu and I wouldnt want my animals to harm someone elses) but I know people allow pet sitters to enter their homes and feed and walk (whatever the animals needs are) a couple times a day. How would I go about starting this business...what supplies should I get...what type of advertisement should I do...and what do I need to get to make my business like..legit. lol. Any information would be appreciated...especially if any of you have experience! thanks in advance! moreResolved Question: I need help potty training my dog...shes confused!?
first of all, i'm sorry if i give you too much information...haha.. okay, so i got a ShihPoo in december for my birthday, and regrettably she never got potty trained. yeah, i have excuses, but thats not the point, so dont lecture me on how i should have potty trained her earlier; i know. anyway, she is now six months old and i think she is confused about where to go potty. i take her outside and put her on her chain(we dont have a fenced in yard, its like one of those 15 food chains) and tell her to go potty. but she ALWAYS holds it until i bring her inside, and then she does her business. she doesnt understand that she is suppose to potty OUTSIDE. here is my schedual: 6:30am--wake up/get ready/go to school 3:30pm--get home 10:00pm--bed so as you can see, i'm not home a good portion of the day, thanks to school, though my dad is home in the mornings and my sister is usually home, but shes a lazy bumm and is no help. so my ultimate question is: how do i potty train my (confused) dog around this schedual? and please dont tell me to use puppy pads. she needs to potty outside. she will start sleeping in her crate, so she will potty first thing in the morning. and directly after i get home from school. and a couple of times an hour so that she can learn. but HOW do i get her to understand? moreResolved Question: How can I stop my puppy from being obsessed with me?
We've had him since October and he is now about 8 months. I'm currently not working so I'm home most of the day. We've crate trained him and he was doing exceptionally good (no peeing AT ALL) until about a month ago. I went out to run errands for about an hour and put him in the crate before leaving. I returned an hour later to find out he peed in his crate. He peed in his crate 4 days in a row every-time I left the house. Then he would stop for a few days and do it again. He follows me everywhere in the house. I move from one room to another say to open the curtains in the living room, he follows me. He follows me to the bathroom and I make him sit outside the bathroom door because allowing him will probably make him think it's okay for him to go after me all the time. Sometimes I bring him along with me when I go out. For example I stop by to get some gas and when I get out of the car, he freaks out. He jumps from the front seat to the back like a psycho dog. Sometimes we go out, me, my husband and our puppy and on the way back my husband tries to take him to the grass area so he can do his business and when my husband says "come on Muffin" he just sits on the ground and looks at me because he sees that I am not going with them, he starts pulling on the leash etc. Lately when I am leaving the house and putting him in his crate, I blast the music all the way up so he can't hear me opening/closing the door. It seemed to work for several times but yesterday he peed in his crate again. I really don't want to lock him up in his crate anymore. I want to leave him out of his crate when I leave the house but he leaves me no other option. I am afraid he will pee/poop/destroy things in the house if I leave him out of his crate. FYI, he doesn't pee/poop in his crate overnight. Do you think this may be separation anxiety? Is there anything we can do about this? Thank you so much!Hi actually kind of grew out of his crate. I'm thinking about getting the next size up. I do have a scheduled feeding time for him. I feed him twice a day, morning and evening. He doesn't have his water/food bowls in his crate. I always take him out before I leave the house. So I give him the chance to go to the bathroom. Regardless, I find his crate wet when I return. I don't always leave the house on schedule. Sometimes I just need to run to the market, post office, bank etc. So how can I take him out an hour before leaving the house if I don't know when :( We also go on a 20 minute walk everyday, so he gets his exercise. moreResolved Question: Should I consider opening a pet shop? I want it to be a great one...please read details-its long though-sorry!?
I know that 99.999% of petshops out there are horrible to their animals and only care about money! I've only been to 1 petshop in my life where the owners actually cared about their animals, but it has a new owner now and the place is no longer great like the old one was! The owner used to handpick her dogs from breeders and actually take care of all her animals properly! She cared about educating people too before selling them an animal, instead of just making an easy profit and not caring how the animal would be cared for once it left her store. I miss that petshop and I was thinking that maybe I could open one myself! Instead of selling dogs and cats, I would pick them from rescues-doing that all legally. I would sell the necassary items for them though and have training classes to teach people how to potty train them and care for them correctly, not being outrageous with costs for training classes-the info for taking care of them would be totally free though and I'd abide by the laws and rescue rules, doing the proper checks on the possible owners, etc. I may even sell some dogs I hand pick from responsible, legal, local breeders (not byb), because I have to make some profit obviously to keep the place open, but not many and I'd be super picky about the breeders and dogs, checking bloodlines, etc! Same with cats! I would not buy rodents or other animals from the animal places petshops do where the animals are treated like dirt and live horrible lives!!! I would either find VERY GOOD breeders to get them from or I would breed them myself, never imbreeding or breeding unhealthy animals. It would be like hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, rats, gerbils, etc, and they would be from very trustworthy people or myself and they would be treated with great respect, as I treat my own pets. I know this would take a few liscenses and time and energy and money, etc, but I could never run an inhumane petshop that doesn't live up to my standards, which is basically every petshop I've ever been in. I also would not sell "petstore cages" for my animals. I would find a good supplier with the proper cages for the animal &/or I would make them myself, making them the right size and out of the right materials. I would also give away free info and advice for small animal buyers and offer cheap classes for new owners and kids on how to properly care for a specific animal, such as a 7 year old getting her first hamster. I would take any classes I'd have to, as would anyone working for me, and get any licenses necassary and permits! I would also sell safe items only, like good, safe wheels, no cedar, only kiln-dried pine shavings, etc. And I would not sell animals like chinchillas or sugar gliders because I don't believe they should be anywhere near petshops of any kind, but I would sell items and cages for them. Am I just dreaming? Would I go broke in a month? Would this ever work? I wouldn't be selling things for outrageous prices and I know many businesses are not doing well now so I'd wait until the ecomomy is doing better-a few years I'd be starting if I do! I would make sure I'd only sell healthy animals and I would never run a place that is less than my personal standards, which are quite high! I would also be a picky seller, asking many questions before I'd sell to anyone and I'd offer free support for anyone who has bought an animal or supplies from me. I love this idea, but how realistic is my petshop in the real world? Any advice would be great-no smart asses though please:) Thank you!!! moreVoting Question: How should I go about training my new puppy?
He's small and adorable and I just got him today, but I've been thinking. How do I go about training him? I am on my spring break right now so I have about a week to start really getting down to business. The biggest thing I am worried about is him going to go "take care of some business". He's a really small dog (won't grew much bigger), and he's young (most likely only 2 to 3 months old) so i am worried if he can hold his water and food and how I should get him to tell me if he has to go. moreResolved Question: Obedience Training! Corrections > 100% Positive Reinforcement?
Hey everyone, I had to share how excited I am to have started this training!! Just a run down for people that don't know about my dog.... My dog Quattro was becoming quite the handful. He was fine at home, he knows basic commands but once he was out on a walk he started displaying aggression - first at kids, than adults he didn't know and finally unaltered males. I didn't like it one bit. I have always been absolutely in love with Schutzhund dogs - I think they are the end all of any trained dog lol...almost like the Rock Stars of dog training! (I will have to send out a shut out to Greek on this) So I contacted my local Schutzhund club and told the guy what my issues with Quattro were. Since he was kind of far from me and was busy getting ready for the upcoming season, he referred me to another trainer in my area who has trained in Schutzhund, trains police dogs, assistance dogs and does obedience. My first session with him was last night. He showed me how to give a proper correction with my prong collar - I was doing more of a tug of war kind of thing when it should have been shorter and sharper. I thought my corrections were sharp, I was wrong! He taught me where my dog should be in relation to me when in the "heel" position. So we walked around and he showed me when I should ask him to heel on a walk - Quattro picked up fast. Then he brought out the "distraction" - his 10 year old retired Schutzhund Doberman. Amazing dog! They came out playing and as soon as he gave his heel command the dog was at his left side paying full attention to him and it was down to business! So he started playing with the dog in front of Quattro, had his dog bark, etc. - in the end, Quattro stayed at my side and never tried to go over to the other dog (he loves playing with other dogs if he doesn't feel threatened by them lol). Even with the trainer started making kissing noises at Quattro to have him come over to him, after the first correction he never tried it again. If you knew my dog - you would have found it as amazing as I did! If anyone starts asking him to come over he will usually go. He taught me that it was important to make sure the dog was getting as much "quiet praise" (as in not getting over excited when giving praise) as he was getting in corrections so that Quattro wouldn't become stressed with his new form of training. I guess it's hard for a dog who thought he was running to the show to finally be put in his place! We were then talking about the 100% positive reinforcement debate - he said that yeah it may work for some dogs but dogs that tend to be more dominant like GSDs and Dobes etc. he doesn't find it works for them. He was then telling me (actually this is the second time I have heard someone talk about it this week) that some positive reinforcement trainers are now saying that when your dog is displaying aggression - the best thing to do is to ignore it or let the dogs figure it out themselves....sorry, what? lol That seems a little risky/dangerous to me. He is currently training a GSD that came from a trainer with those kinds of views - apparently it is hard work untraining him lol. So here's my questions: 1. Anyone else use this form of Obedience training? 2. Can anyone that is training in 100% positive reinforcement tell me if this is how their trainers train? Also, can you explain how not giving the dog a correction to show the dog boundaries or what is not a desired behaviour - how do you 100% proof your dog? (I'm not trying to ruffle feathers - I'm REALLY interested in knowing how people training in this method can guarantee that their training is proofed)Hopefully one day I will be able to join a Schutzhund club! Yesterday was our first session with our trainer and so only time will tell if he thinks Quattro would be able to do it! As for clicker training - I wasn't really talking about clicker training. I don't really talk about it because, simply, I'm not that interested in it. I'm sure it might work later down the road if I ever decided to use it but right now I don't think it will work for my dog. Every dog is different, right? I have looked into a few different types of training and I just don't think clicker training is for me or my dog.@Bindi - thanks for that. I hope you understand what I'm saying about clicker training. I don't think that is something for my dog at this point. I think if your dog is proven in basic obedience and then clicker training is something you are interested in - then yeah, you could do it at that point. Will I do it? Maybe. Probably not. Maybe you can't 100% proof a dog - but I do know Quattro will be scored at the end of his training and his training has to be at least 96% proven before he can move on to any other levels.@Bindi or rather "-" now. Why would you change your name and then your answer? It's not like you got a wack load of TDs lol. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and if it's the opinion of someone not to use a certain method of training, that is theirs to have. moreResolved Question: 7 year old male neutered Papillon dog marking indoors. How can I get him to stop?
I have a papillon dog that I received from a friend who could no longer take care of him when he was about two years old. He has always had a terrible marking habit. I got him neutered and it did stop the behavior for awhile but now he has gone back to his old ways. I have tried many things and have been consistent with his training, but I just can't seem to get him to stop. I have another female papillon and I never had potty issues with her and she is spayed (she is the dominate dog). I used a belly-band before his surgery but now I don't since my dogs use a dog door to do their business outside when I have long work shifts (only 3 days a week, otherwise I am home). You turn your back on him for a second and he will mark. My Kitchen and living area is starting to get an off smell and I don't always see his markings. He acts like I am the alpha in the household. What should I do? I have tried: crating, treats and praise for going outside, put nose in marked area and scold, time out (best discipline for my girl dog), belly bands (he just soils them and stinks something fierce), morning and evening walks. Any advice???He uses the dog door to go outside during the time I am gone. When I did not work at all (home almost everyday) his behavior was still the same, I only used the belly bands when I was home. He doesn't wear them at all now since he uses the dog door. He doesn't have a urinary tract problem. I already had him checked for that a few times. To my dogs I am seen as the most dominant in the house, and the female has dominance over him as well. So I don't think it is an "alpha dog" thing. He uses the dog door to go outside during the time I am gone. we just got a black lab puppy a week and a half a go...he is 9 weeks old. he's pretty lazy...but has energy and is playful but then sleeps alot too. we've been trying to house train him, mainly just train him to do his business outside. the first few days were hell...i let him out at least every 15 min to 30 min. i had to go out there with him or else he would just stay by the door. first he'd pee and then he'd want to go back in. i learned that i had to keep him out cuz even if he had to do something else, he wanted to go back in the house. i can't count how many times i let him out and he just peed or did nothing and then 2 min later he'd go in the house. but he started to figure it out. he started to go to the door and whine or bark so we'd let him out. so i thought he was getting it. but it's weird now...sometimes he'll whine to go out....and sometimes he won't even bother and he'll just do it right in front of u in the house. of course we reprimand him when we see him do it and put him outside but it still continues. it seems that even when we first brought him home, he knew that he's suposed to do it outside...it was just a matter of teaching him that he can only do it outside. and maybe i'm just paranoid but it seems that when i scold him for something...like chewing on furniture or getting to rough with my 2 yr old....he gets mad at me and barks and then leaves me a present somewhere in the house instead of going outside. could it be that he's jealous? it seems that he understands to go to the door and bark...and sometimes he just comes and finds us a whines alot til i let him out. he sleeps in bed with us all night and he doesn't have any accidents. usually i'll get up once or twice to let him out...he's actually woken me up with his whining cuz he had to take a dump. so i know that he can hold it if he wants. we had a friends dog over the other day and our puppy learned from him how to walk and pee at the same time so now istead of puddles, i have long lines of pee to clean up. we always praise him when he goes outside and scold him when he goes in the house...so why does he still do it? it's been a long time since i've had a puppy...not since i was a kid and my parents trained it....so i'm just not sure if this stuff is normal. i know he's just a baby...but once he starts to get it shouldn't he just get it?i just want to add that i am not abusing or mistreating my puppy. i absolutely love animals and do not agree with cruelty to them. i am being patient and letting my puppy train at his own pace. the only thing i do i take him out, frequently and praise him when he goes outside and when i catch him inside doing it, i pick him up, say potty outside, and take him outside. i was just not sure if his behavior was normal since it seemed like he was doing good at first...and that is why i posted the question. moreResolved Question: Ethics question -- Please help?
My God's Balls Dogfood -- IAMSTHATIAMS is not selling quite so well as my projections showed. Would it be unethical to get some guys from corporate out there, and make them put on strap on rubber snouts, and wear furry outfits, and get down on all fours, and pretend to be eating and loving my dogfood? Most of these guys are Hedge Fund managers, or toxic mortgage repackagers, or my credit default swaps trading floor guys. They get decent salaries followed by totally obscene bonuses. I ask, they do. It's simple. I don't want to lose my dogfood line. It has great prospects in Scotland due to the able efforts of my marketing team, there. Scottish dogs, most of which look like Scotties, say Mcwoof Mcwoof when they hear a can of God's Balls being opened. I have a Minoan with a Dulcimer who plays old riffs from Lassie and Rin Tin TIn movies for them while they eat. She's a cadenza writer par excellance. If the Donald had a piece of my dogfood business, he would be in better shape. The Chinese want in too. So, these guys are already on the payroll. They are a sunk cost. There are no dignity issues here. I say, they do. Anyhow their faces wouldn't be shown -- their wives are not going to see who is behind the strap on snout, going arf arf yum yum, woof woof, yummy for my tummy. Would it be considered harassment? I get that a lot. I've had to go to 'sensitiviy training" since they started it, every year since 1975, so I'm a pretty "aware" guy, and I don't want to deal with a bunch of guys from legal about how I've harassed executives AGAIN, after last time when I made them sing in the Feline Tabernacle Choir dressed up as cats singing America the Meowable, and I'm a Yankee Doodle Meower, and Amazing Meows. Anyhow, just help me stay out of trouble here, am I Ok to call these guys, and fit them up with snouts? When my fiance and I graduate from dog training college we were going to start out working for someone else instead of having our own business, but I really would like to start our business right away. My problem is that I don't know if the area we live in would be great for a dog training business. It doesn't seem like many people professionally train their dogs, but maybe I'm wrong. So my question is: Have you ever had your dog professionally trained and how much would you pay to do so... I know when my mother got her chi trained it was a lot but I wouldn't want to charge an arm and a leg. moreResolved Question: Why do housetrained dogs still have accidents, even if you're few feet away?
ok so i have a nine months old GSD who's been crate trained but still has accidents from time to time. The last one just happened 30 mins ago! he was playing next to me in the bedroom while i am on my laptop studying then he goes into the bathroom and suddenly runs and curls up underneath the desk by my feet looking scared. I was a little puzzuled at first and thought something was bothering him so I start reassuring him and stuff (dumb me) and when i go into the bath room..Surpirse! thankfully it was #1 I start yelling at him and clearlly he knew that he did something wrong because he kept hiding in corners. Then i took him outside and he finished his business. When i went back inside he still looked stressed and scared. I guess I have more than one question, why do dogs still have accidents when you're only few feet away from them, are they trying to tease or make their owners angry on purpose? (the last accident happened also but my husband was the present one he was literally infront of him on the couch watching tv and he pees right infront of him while playing on the rug) how far back do dogs memory go? Is my dog out of the ordinary? (I am asking this because he clearly remember what he did wrong after i took him out and went back into the house where he sat on his bed and didn't follow me around like he does usually ) moreVoting Question: How can I train a dog to poop outside?
I adopted a 5 years old puggle about 3 weeks ago. I was told she might be trainned but unfortunatelly she wasn't. I started to take her out ever since I got her and I was able to make her poop outside twice. The problem was that, as a part of the contract, I had to get her spayed. After surgery, I believe, her metabolism changed and she is not pooping in the mornings anymore, as a matter of fact, I don't know when she poops, all I know is that when I get home she has already poop on the carpet. I had to buy her a trainning mats because I didn't wanted to her business on the carpet, and all she does is pee on there but refuses to poop. She is not pooping and peeing all over the house, she has chosen one corner of the livingroom and it's there where I placed the mat. I believe I may be able to train her if I only knew when she wants to poop/pee. Any idea? moreResolved Question: How to house/pad training older dog?
I got a Papillon two days ago. The breeder said she was 8 months old, but when i took her to the vet for a physical/tests yesterday, the vet estimated her to be much older, at least 2 years. He estimated this by looking at her teeth. All of her adult teeth are in, and extremely covered in plaque. She's getting them cleaned up when i get her spayed next month. Anyways, she is not house broken at all. I crate her at night, and i take her out when i hear her start to get up. But last night she wet herself in the crate. I do not think she has any idea where she is supposed to do her business. She will randomly squat and pee. I have put down pads, and i reward her when she uses them, but i have basically had to cover the whole floor in pads so she wont pee elsewhere. I figure for the most part, it would be smart to get her pad trained first. So the bottom line is: What is the best way to reinforce her using the pads (and to make a distinction between the pads and the carpet)? And how do i keep her from wetting herself in the crate at night? moreResolved Question: my 7.5 month old labrador started to eat poop. how do i make him stop?
few weeks back, he was nice. no eating poop, only small stones and grass, sometimes. but lately, he has started to eat poop. i let him out in the backyard to do his business so he does it and then explores. finds his poop, breaks it with his leg and then picks up a piece and walks away sometime eats it too. today i saw him do that, i rushed into the backyard and yelled at him and pushed him around, and everything till he was shaking every muscle. now he looks at me with sorrow and makes cute sad face but m ignoring him. i really hate to do this coz i love him and doing what i did to him breaks my heart. but i have to teach him not to eat poop coz he lives in the house and its not sanitary. also, when i take him to a park and let him go off-leash, he eats other dogs poop (what if he gets worms from it). how long will i have to do that till he learns that eating poop makes me angry? he's a quick learner, he was potty trained in less than 3 days.i do pick up the poop but its winter and theres snow all over the back yard so i miss a couple since they are deep inside (not visible) and the puppy sniffs it and digs it out. how come other dogs dont eat poop. my friends with german shephard, husky, great dane, etc. they dont eat poop. and they didn't even train them. its just that they are not interested in it. sure they sniff it, but thats it. moreResolved Question: Help with my very timid and jumpy dog?
To begin with, I'm an experienced animal trainer. I spent 10+ years training horses. I have two dogs. One of them is a very well trained 3 year old bitch who I raised from 8 weeks old. She has no problems of any kind and is very good with other dogs and people. Our other dog is a 5 year old rescue corgi. From what we can tell, he was purchased as a puppy from a mill, with the intent of being a stud for a backyard breeder. For some reason, she put him in her fenced back yard, and literally never touched him (the female was spoiled rotten and lived inside). After being surrendered, he and the female went to live with a local corgi breeder, who placed them free to good homes. My brother got the dog, and he was taken to live at his house which he shares with another owner and dog. The other dog is extremely hyper and has absolutely no manners. The corgi spent most of his time hiding under the bathroom sink. If you approached him, he would run away and shake-except for our daughter who he really liked (the fact that she was his size and constantly dropping bits of food probably didn't hurt). We visited and brought our dog. The corgi and she got along very well. After he had been at my brothers house for about a year, the dog was getting more social though he was still very fearful. At that point, a neighbor of mine was forced into taking a very large staffordshire terrier. She had a tiny apartment, and was moving in a few months into a retirement home. So I ended up with the staffordshire terrier. Right after I got him, my brother came to visit and really liked the dog, he was looking for a pet he could take camping and go out on the river with him, and the big dog was already trained to pack. He offered to trade the corgi for the staffordshire terrier. The staffordshire terrier is incredibly chill, and being much larger than the other dog in the house has put some manners on her. So the corgi came to live with us. Since he came here, he has undergone an incredible change. He no longer runs away from people, in fact if you sit down you're likely to end up with him on your lap (if you don't pet he shoves his head under your hand). He doesn't hide during thunderstorms. He's even started to bark and grumble like a normal corgi. He came with no training at all, since he got here he's learned to toilet properly and to come and sit. He still takes off if he sees someone move abruptly toward him, and doesn't like to go through doors if you have your hand on the doorknob (we figure the breeder slammed him a few times). Now he's started chewing up books and destroying any sort of food packaging that is left within his reach. He's very sneaky about it, but I know it's him. He also has decided he's going to lay in doorways and not move. If you shoo him away from one, he goes to another doorway in the house. Unfortunately, any hint of aggression, the slightest raised voice, or a commanding stature appears to freak him out. He starts to shake wildly. Eg if you tell him to sit, he sits-and shakes while looking up at you with dewy eyes. I know it's not all (or perhaps even mostly) actual fear. He did the same thing with storms when he first came here. The normal response of the other people who've been nice to him was to pick him up and cuddle him. I ignored the shaking, and two storms later he was on the couch totally chilled out. I need some ideas on how to deal with this shaking business, and how to get rid of it. At times it can be ignored, but at other times (like when I'm giving the dogs treats) it's really an issue- he needs to be rewarded for doing what I ask but not for the shaking bit. Currently, I'm asking him for something then sitting there and waiting for him to stop shaking, then giving him a reward. But half the time when he sees me move to give him something or pet him he starts to shake again. I try to only work with him when I know he's calm, and I have enough patience to sit around until he settles down. Is there anything else I can do to help him learn to stop getting so worked up? Any ideas on some way to reprimand him that isn't as likely to set him off?ah, filters. I am working with Excel 2000 to try to make a database for a business. It is for dog training, so on the left of my sheet, I have clients names. Then in the following columns, I have spaces for dog breed, dob, start date, training program, vaccine records, ect... I would like to make a drop down list that would allow me to click on it and sort my data by the info in the columns. Such as, I would like to be able to click on vaccine records from the drop down (or however) and for it to automatically organize my records in order of the date of the vaccine record. Or click on breed, and it to group all the labs together, all the poodles together and so on. HELP!!!?
She's constantly going in circles while she poops which of course makes poop fly everywhere. I think she's trying to see it. Now she has also began to start leaving the pad before she has finished doing her business which leaves poop chunks in a trail behind her. I should also mention that she sometimes pees beside the pad not on it. I love my dog, but if she doesn't stop this she will be put out by my husband. What do I do? She was trained at some point and I don't know what happened. Oh yeah, we do have another dog now. A Yorkie that's 10 weeks younger than her. They love each other, but my Yorkie (Layla) acts better trained than my Maltese (Sasha). What have I done wrong? I'm not really sure about blaming Sasha's accidents on Layla's presence because Sasha had started doing this before Layla came home. Because of these problems she is still having to be crated more than I wanted her to be. She whines because Layla is out of the crate. Sasha is 7 months and Layla is 5 months. I hope this is enough info to get decent answers. Why do people answer questions so hatefully on here? Apparently I am trying to housetrain her, duh! Give me advice on how to do these things for a dog I have tried to train. I put her in the crate when I can't watch her. I don't want to ever "crate" her but I have no choice with her because nothing seems to work. My Yorkie is trained so apparently I'm doing something right. She's only crated when we leave home. I'm sure that the dogs that are put to sleep would love a pet owner like me who doesn't know everything, but takes excellent care of them. Sheez! No, I bet you guys are confused. I used the pads that are intended for this purpose. Even one of the cites that one of you guys sent me to has a paper training method. There is nothing wrong with using this method. I will start training my dog to go outside, but I will not ask for anymore advice from you buttholes. How hard would it have been to say its just easier for them if you don't use the papers. I do not get mad at my dog. Stop trying to find reasons to tell people off and find something better to do than sitting on here answering questions all day. Buttholes!@ La Vita ... It probabably wasn't very mature for me to point out to you how insensitvely you answered my question. When I am reported I will sit in a dark room and cry...NOT. Hi guys, I was just wondering what if a seeing eye dog was out with its owner lets say walking to the grocery store, and a dog out of no where luges onto the seeing eye dog. I know the dog is trained to work for its owner and help them, but do you think they would fight back? How would they protect their owner? I just ask that out of couriosity, after watching seeing eye dogs protect their owners from speeding cars into an intersections and other things, but how would they protect their owner from an agressive dog? Also my other question is, my dog is no seeing eye dog at all. Today I was walking her, and this loose, Labrador came charging towards us, not thinking of much I tried to get my dog to carry on our walk. Well this Labrador was also a female and she jumped on top of my dog and growled at her. She didn't bite her because I got in frot of her. Yesterday I got a 6 week old (2 pound) dachshund puppy that has been rescued from a neglectful home. From what I understand, the puppy was living in VERY unsafe conditions with it's poorly cared for mother and possibly siblings. I'm unsure why it's been separated from it's mother, but I guess that's the state's business. We did take him to the vet for his first round of shots, and the vet said he was a lucky dog, as he was clearly not cared for much and has a pretty bad worm problem, but luckily he will be fine with the proper shots and de-worming meds. I've raised dogs in the past, but never any younger than a year as the only dogs I've housed were older rescued animals, so I really have some questions that I need answered. I want to raise him properly and give him everything that he needs, so thorough answers would be nice! First - how much do you feed the puppy? I bought some vet recommended Blue Buffalo brand food, and it says to feed him 1/4 cup a day. This seems like too little to me. I fed him 1/4 cup (crushed and watered down so that it could eat it, the food plain was too hard for him) a few hours before bed time last night and it seemed to still want more. I fed him only 1/8 cup this morning and was planning on 1/8 this evening, but really want to be sure. We are also trying to crate train him as the vet said to start instantly. He did pretty well last night, cried maybe 6-7 times for ten minutes each time, I took him outside every 3-4 hours from the last time he went throughout the night, and he went all but once. The other times he cried we ignored him per instructions from the vet and he eventually went to sleep. Is this the best way to do this? And if he wants to sleep during the day, do we let him sleep wherever he passes out, or should we show him his crate? Or should we leave his crate open in the bedroom, and let him go there only if he wants to (other than at night when we take him there). He also seems to sleep often during the day, how much should he sleep during the day, and he it sleeps all day, how do we insure that he will be sleeping all night? I don't want him to be a ball of energy when it comes around to bed time. It seems that he isn't active at all and only wants to sleep, is this normal too? And how do we potty train him at this age? I'm trying to take him out every few hours, but he still seems to want to only pee inside. I know he is young, but I don't want to completely ignore his accidents. And - what is the best way to clean up his messes? I'm using Resolve Pet Stain on the carpet, but is this really the best? And finally - how do I get rid of his smell? He smells like he has spent his entire life in a cage with poop, pee, and cigarette smoke. We gave him a nice bath yesterday, but he still smells awful! Sorry that this is so long, but he really needs a good home after what he has been through, and I really want to give him the best! moreResolved Question: If I am a new dog trainer how and how much should I charge?
I just moved to San Jose, CA for my 9-5 job, but I wanted to do some dog training on the weekends. I don't have any official qualifications, but I'm quite good: I trained my friends dog to open the refrigerator, grab a beer and bring it to me. Simple tricks I can teach dogs in a few minutes. I was going to advertise home training visits on craigslist, but I'm not associated with any business so I don't know where to start. I'm not looking to make a killing, but I would like some reasonable compensation for my time. So how much should I charge? And then how should I charge? (By the trick? Per hour of my time? Any other ideas?) If I had my preference, I would like to teach exotic tricks instead of the basics. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks moreVoting Question: How do I convince my friend that breeding dogs is a bad idea for him?
He wants to breed Huskies for a living when he moves out of the city. It's a goal for him, he hasn't started and doesn't own a dog yet. He has no training in dog care, no experience in breeding or training, no concept of business practices (i.e. insurance, licensing, inspection etc) and is more stubborn than a mule. After explaining all the reasons I can think of from cost of breeding and doing business to the quality of life for the animals, after his wife has tried to explain that their kids would get attached to the dogs, and the amount of care they would require he still has it in his head that this is a good idea. Any ideas? I've tried all I can think of. moreTop How To Start A Dog Training Business Links
