Attorney questions ordinance governing sexually oriented businesses
A Memphis attorney raised questions Wednesday about a new ordinance governing sexually oriented businesses in Shelby County.
Attorney Edward Bearman, who represents three strip clubs inside the Memphis City limits, said the new ordinance in Shelby County might not be what people think.
"It's very possible that hotels, mainstream movie theaters, and country clubs would have to register as sexually oriented businesses because of the way those businesses are defined under this act," he said.
According to Bearman, that's because hotel customers can order adult movies, mainstream theaters have nudity, and country clubs have massage therapists.
Bearman also had concerns about selective enforcement.
"If these mainstream-type businesses are not required to register, then you're selecting certain types of businesses over others to enforce this act against," he said. more

Open Question: How do I convince my friend that breeding dogs is a bad idea for him?
He wants to breed Huskies for a living when he moves out of the city. It's a goal for him, he hasn't started and doesn't own a dog yet. He has no training in dog care, no experience in breeding or training, no concept of business practices (i.e. insurance, licensing, inspection etc) and is more stubborn than a mule. After explaining all the reasons I can think of from cost of breeding and doing business to the quality of life for the animals, after his wife has tried to explain that their kids would get attached to the dogs, and the amount of care they would require he still has it in his head that this is a good idea. Any ideas? I've tried all I can think of. moreOpen Question: Are Chihuahuas (mixed with another breed) UNTRAINABLE to be potty trained?
I got a 2 year old Chihuahua Mini pincher mix a couple months ago. She was a rescue dog I feel in love with despite I was looking for something much more manly. Her back story is that her first owner kept her in a crate for 16 hours a day in a restroom. Never potty trained. Only puppy pads for two years. NO human or dog socialization. Add to that her hind leg was set on fire from the first owner, and this dog has had 4 owners in 4 months. I really don't want to give up this dog and be the 5th owner to bail on her. So anyways, I have started over with as if she was a puppy and use crate training. I take her out for a walk every 3 hours (since I work from home and the crate is literally 3 feet away from my desk). I have driven home the point not to pee in the house. The problem is she doesn't let me know when she wants to go outside. I've tried bells. Teaching her to sit by the door. Touch the door. Whine. ANYTHING..but she does nothing. She does pee and poop outside just fine. She is a smart dog. When she does pee or poop indoors. She knows I'll be ticked and she runs into her crate and literarlly locks the cage door closed on her own. I never yell at her unless I catch her in the act. I basically yell for her to stop. She freezes. I pick her up and point at the pee or poop. Then I march her outside the Apartment and point to the large grassy area where she is supposed to go. Put her down on the grass, let her sniff around and finish her business outside. She was doing good for a couple of weeks. She likes to cuddle with me an my wife on our lap. She was doing great until she was sitting om y wife's lap and peed. I watched it happen. Its like she briefly forgets the house rules. I know she knows the rules becuase she bolted for her crate right after she realized what she did. I suspected a medical issue so I took her to the vet for the first time to rule out a medical condition. The vet said she was fine and healthy (he just did a visual examine). We asked the front desk vet assistant about her peeing problem becuase she said she had the same breed of dog. I explained the situation like I told you and she said, " Chihuahuas are not able to be potty trained. I suggest you do what I do, and use puppy pads." I told her that I don't want this dog to poop or pee inside becuase she has peed and pooped in 4 out of the 4 homes we visited with her in tow. Basically if my dog could let me know when she needs to go, that's all I need. Her response was: "I don't think you get it. Chihuahuas are just untrainable to do what you are asking." My question is what she is telling me true? Am I stuck with a dog I can't potty train? moreVoting Question: I wanna start a service dog training business?
After I finish Burgin University of Canine studies I want to start a service dog training business (a small one) Does anyone have any advice, instructions, coments etc. Especially about licencing, I dont know what I'll need to licence get inspected or anything else. Oh yeah n I live in Alaska so if u know anything about licencing in Alaska tell me. Cause ofcoarse ill have to breed my own dogs. And i think that needs a licence, but i dont know how to get any licences. AHHHHHHH!!! So confusing. So, if anyone knows the tiniest smidge about service dog stuff id love to know. THANKZZZZ! moreResolved Question: How do I train this puppy?
Hi everyone! I need help! Ok, I have 2 male Chihuahua pups, Paco and Muppet. I have had them since birth, they are brothers, and are now 5 months old. I started out "paper training" the whole litter of puppies, but as they found new homes, I started taking my boys outside to do their business, and weaning them off of the paper. Low and behold, they one day started using my cat's litter box! We were doing fine for a while, but Muppet still was having occasional accidents outside of the litter box. Now, he won't use it at all! Still using the floor. It is always the same spot every time. I have bleached the floor, used ammonia, bought oder remover from the pet store, everything I can think of to make him choose somewhere else to go, or to go in the litter box, as the spot he has picked is right in front of the last step on our stairs! I take him out as much as I can off and on throughout the day, but he still manages to hit the floor at least once a day. I even had to take my Christmas tree skirt and presents up out from under the tree because they have picked the tree skirt as the pee spot! Can someone help me out with some suggestions here? Paco is doing just fine with the litter box, and he goes outside with Muppet everyday. What else can I do? How do I get sweet little Muppet back on track? Thank you in advance! PS> Have you ever heard of 2 brother dogs being sexually attracted to each other? Muppet was "all out" the other day! It was after him and Paco were humping each other. Kinda freaked me and him out! lol Poor little thing looked at me like "What did I do wrong?"The detailed answer may be the most informative, but K, yeah, Ammonia. Although I have already tried bleach and a diluted bleach solution. This morning when he got up (he is my son's puppy and sleeps upstairs with him) and came downstairs, we cuddled as usual, and I kinda just mumbled to myself "please don't pee in the floor today buddy, just go use the box or tell me you need to go out ok?", and then we went to go out. We passed the litterbox on the way and I thought "hey, why not try one more time?" So I asked Muppet if he needed to go Pee and told him to go get in the box and pee. He looked back and me and low and behold the little devil went and climbed in the box and Did his business, both!!! Oh my word, I was so happy I started clapping and praising as much as I could and grabbed the nearest thing I could to give him for a treat (it just happened to be a few pieces of dry cat food. At the moment, anything would have worked for me.) No accidents for the rest of the day. Who knows? moreResolved Question: How to get my cat and dogs to get a long?
My baby Jindo chases after my cat all day long. It causes my Shiba to join in on the chase. So my cat gets really defensive and starts clawing at the two. This excites my two dogs and causes hysteria in the house. I want them to settle down and quit this business. My cat is really aggressive so it's hard for my dogs to get along even if I train them to. He'll club the shiba on the head even when my shiba is just casually walking by thecat. This pissess of my shiba and causes more chasing and vicious cycle. What can I do? They both fuel each other. The cat stays up stairs all day and the dogs wait downstairs like sharks. moreResolved Question: My dog is really GASSY. She keeps farting!?
My mutt is definitely a Heinz57, but everyone generally agrees that she has a greyhound body. She's over a year old and weighs 52 lbs. She's on Canidae All Life Stages dry dog food. She's trained, but she's not a fan of strangers in our home. Yesterday we had a contractor (who's business acquaintances with my husband) come give us an estimate for some work we're doing on our house. She normally would bark & show her teeth if someone just walked into our house like that. But she didn't with him. She let out two muffled barks, but she kept wagging her tail and then she walked up to him and started licking his hands (which he was fine with & he played with her for a minute). And she was super-well-behaved the rest of the day, too! She was very quick to obey and behaved better than she ever has. As a reward, I got her a can of Purina One wet food (lamb & rice formula) for dinner. I mixed some in with her Canidae dry food. She scarfed it right up. This morning, I was walking her & she squatted to do her business and what came out was just... disgusting. It was normal poop color, but completely runny & it just ran right out of her. She's been laying around & sleeping most of the day. But she keeps farting & it absolutely REEKS. I understand it's from giving her the wet food (which I won't do again). But how long will it last? Does it just have to run its course today? Can I give her anything to make it go away (or at least stop stinking up my house lol)?I wasn't rewarding her for anything in particular, just for her general good behavior that day. I know that my husband and I understood it more than she did. I just wanted to do something nice for her. moreVoting Question: new dog mommy here, HELP?
I have a 12 week old yellow lab. I've had him for one day and yet I don't know where to start. he did his business on the carpet so I raise me voice and said no. was that the right way to start potting training if not what is? he cries when locked up should i just let him cry? should he sleep in bed with me or no? I placed puppy pads down around the house and put him on there because im hoping he will use them and not my carpet. do they really work? thank you! moreResolved Question: Why does my dog keep going to the bathroom in the house and in the same area?
I took in a 4-5year old chihuahua about 2 months ago who had already been house trained. For the first month and a half i had no problems with him going to the bathroom in the house he would always start to wine when he had to go or just do his business on our frequent trips outside but he no longer does that. Now just about every morning i wake up to the smell of dog piss and this morning i got a double surprise poop and piss. It's always late at night when i am asleep and in the same area. Why is he doing this and how do i get him to stop? Other info: he is a small dog he eats twice a day in the morning and in the evening and nothing after 8 p.m i take him out early when i wake up around 7:30 and about every 3-4 hrs moreResolved Question: Dog training tips please?
I was wondering if any of you dog-lovers on here had any dog training tips for me. My 6 year old rescue dog can be a bit difficult, at home he is great with his training - picks things up really quickly and will do almost anything for a piece of cheese or an ear rub! The problems arise when we go out and about. He will bark quite aggressively at almost every dog he sees (he is quite big so can be pretty scary when he starts getting vocal) and I've been having some difficulty on getting him to focus on me instead of what is going on around him. If there are no distractions and he's already done his "business" I can just about get him to do a sit but this is very reluctantly. My main problem is that when we are out he has no interest whatsoever in food treats and has never been toy motivated, so how can I go about training him without having anything to tempt him with? Any advice would be most welcome! moreVoting Question: info on starting dog training?
hey everyone...i love dogs more than anything! i love working with dogs and love training them...so, i've always wanted to have my own dog training business. i just dont know anything about how to get started...anyone have any advice, tips or websites i could check out? THANKS :-)the problem about going to a pet store or a dog trainer is i live in a very small town and there's nothing like that around here...i'd have to travel 3 hours to get to a place.....i have dogs and i train them and am working with them as much as i can, but i would like to help people with their dogs as well moreResolved Question: Please help me with my dog?
Ok, first off i have a 4 through maybe 6 week old German Shepherd Pit Bull mix who i really want to train. First i want to teach her not to bite and nip at me, my mom and lil bro like she does when we play with her. She sometimes gets very excited and goes wild and just starts biting at our hands when we play with her with her chew toys. Also she sometimes bites at our hands with aggression and starts growling and barks a couple of times when we tell her to stop biting on like our pants leg or shoes: we'd like wave our finger or hand at her and tell her to stop and she tries to get aggressive. Second, when is the best time to take her out to do her business because shes learned to do it in the house which was a big mistake because i dont think she would do it outside. Third when will we be able to take her for walks be cause we read that at about three months is good but i wanted to know if we should start.(ps everytime we take her outside she starts shaking and getting very cold) Also we would take her to a trainer but we are kind of in a tight spot and we arent able to get her there right now. So please help me. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!Heidi A i suspected that but my cousin just kept pushing her on me and we jus took her then and didnt wait. i hope she dosent miss her mommy:( but her mother was the type to kill or literally eat her pupsOk since every body is talking about the walking is it alright to walk my dog in 40 degree wheather? moreVoting Question: Old, sick dog pooping and peeing inside the house a lot?
Our dog just turned 12 in november and he has addisons disease, before anyone says 'TAKE HIM TO THE VET.' So, he's a really good dog and has ALWAYS been house-trained and is well fed (he isn't free-fed) and ALWAYS has access to water. Ever since he was diagnosed with Addisons disease he started peeing and pooping inside the house. We know he can't help it and we don't get mad, but it's getting really troublesome having to clean it up every morning because it leaves such a horrible smell in the house. We can't leave the back door open for him because of the weather here, and we can't make him live outside because of his age and again because of the weather. We always let him out to do his business but he still does it. We don't know what to do. We can't take him to the vet about that JUST yet because my mum spent £80 on medicine for our cats rash and she spent another £50 on pills for him. Is there anything we can do at all? All advice is appreciated :D Thank you~ moreResolved Question: Problem with dog pooing in house.?
I have a 14yr old whippet he is fully house trained and just recently instead of going telling me he wants to go out to do his business he has started just going inside. He knows not to because he only does it where he is not in view. Is there anyway I can stop him.Okay more details, I offer to let him out and he doesnt want to then a few minutes later he will go inside, I dont have time to take him out every 2 hours and I do pick it up. moreResolved Question: Would I ruin our puppy to leave her alone all night?
Okay we have a puppy, the cutest little puppy you've ever seen! We love her to pieces and we are finally seeing some progress on the biting front (I've asked about that before). I'm home all day long with a daycare business and some day's my husband is home too. She is taken outside all day (at seperate times, she's not left outside all day!) and has had very few accidents...the ones she's had have been our fault when we weren't paying attention and we've just cleaned them up and ignored them. In the whole month we've had her though she's had maybe 5 accidents so she's doing really well and she'll "ask" to go out now, scratching the door, whining at us, whatever...there's always some kind of signal. Here's the thing...we have had her for about a month now and we've been getting up with her through the night but....it's killing us!!!! She sleeps in our bed with us and wakes us up when she has to go (by us I mean she licks my face). This is her night schedule, I take her out about 10, my husband around 11 or 12, then I take her out sometime between 2-3, my husband around 5-6, my kids take her in the backyard at 7 then we start our day...she sleeps a lot in the morning, gets a good walk in the afternoon, sleeps some more, has a big crazy play time from 3-4 in the backyard with the kids, another big walk either before or after dinner, and then the night time comes again. I can barely get up in the mornings now and my husband is the same. How terrible would it be to put her in her crate and expect her to hold it from 11-7? Would it ruin her potty training thus far? We even have a tiled landing in the basement that we could block off (there are doors all around) where she can sleep, we could put her in her crate with the door open and a pee pad at the front of it (although up till now I've been very against the pee pad things) and then continue to take her out during the day. We just seriously need some sleep...they say it's like having a baby but my "real" babies slept through the night (8 hours) at 6 weeks, both of them, and now our puppy is 10 weeks today. Yes we got her early, yes I know now that was too early, no I didn't get her from a puppy mill, just a couple of farm dogs that made friends and the people didn't know either as they're not breeders. She is a lab (she looks like a golden lab with the cutest white tips) and Australian Shepherd, and Collie. Anyway...some thoughts? Or at least encouragement? When can she be expected to sleep through the night if you think we should continue the night time potty trips? Thank you in advance!Lily, you are being rather harsh here...when we first brought her home she had her own bed. When I took her out I'd put her safely in her own bed and sometimes stay with her for a few moments till she fell back asleep. My big tough husband however felt she was too little to be sleeping like that and on the third night her brought her to bed with us. I really don't feel we need to worry about her respect from bed sleeping alone, there are a lot of other things we do to make sure she sees herself at the bottom of our "pack". We are not stupid dog owners, just REALLY tired! I'm more than willing to "suck it up", taking a nap however is out of the question as I said I am running a daycare business here and my husband works full time as well. But hey, thank's for your support..I am pro crate training and she is in her crate, happily anytime we need to leave her alone for a bit. moreResolved Question: Dog grooming certification?
I am going to start training with a friend who has a small grooming business that she runs out of her home. If and when I become confident enough, I am going to start up a similar business where I live, but going to client's homes to groom. I was wondering if after you are trained, if there is a way to actually get a certification? I know you can go to grooming schools, or get apprenticeships with certified groomers, but if you are trained otherwise, is there a test or something you can take to get your license so you can work in a real groomers? Or would you just apply at whatever groomers and they do their own evaluation to see if you're good enough? moreOpen Question: Is this a good schedule for my dog to start going potty outside?
I just started to potty train him outside today, so please tell me if I am doing anything wrong! After he ate today I waited 15 minutes, took him outside, and he did all his business. So, thats why I was going to walk him 15 min after he ate. Is that okay or too long or too soon? He is grown, and he weighs 41/2 -5 pounds. (When I wake up) 7:30 a.m.- Walk 8:00 a.m.-Feed 8:15 a.m.- Walk 12:00 p.m.- Walk 5:00 p.m.- Feed 5:15 p.m.-Walk Walk again before I go to sleep. Also, I cant let him outside by himself, because we live in an apartment complex. Thanks for your suggestions! moreResolved Question: Dog training help needed!?
I need some help with my dog, he goes nuts when anyone comes to the door and jumps all over them when they come into the house. When it is people that know him and aren't fussed about his over excitement to see them I keep him in and just try to get him to stop as soon as I can but when its people that don't like dogs, are nervous of dogs, just don't like it or don't know him I have to leave him out the back garden. Its a real pain and I am starting up childminding and I have to have him in the house so I need to stop this behavior now, I will have the care commission officer coming round as well as perspective clients with their children and obviously this behavior is totally unacceptable. He is a great natured dog who is great with kids and very obedient in every other way, he doesn't have to go on the lead outdoors and comes back as soon as he is called, this is the only antisocial behavior he has at all and if I don't get it sorted out it has the potential to ruin this business. I am planning on either taking him to classes or getting a trainer to come to the house, I just wanted so see if anyone on here could help first. moreResolved Question: house training my 5months lab, looking for suggestions, sorry i wrote a long story?
when luvina was 3months, i once started to house train her but the rain season started and and she was terribly confused because i couldn't take her out when the rain was heavy (i should add that some fellows in this very website told me that i should take her out even when it rain heavily i did so and the poor puppy fell sick, when i took her to the vet he told that because there is a flow of dirty water in the street i should not take her out when it rains, well those friends have not definitely considered the locality of where i live) she was potty trained and used to go to the balcony so i prefer ed to let her continue that till the rain season is completely over. it is about 7 days that i have decided to limit her access to the balcony so that she learns to hold before i start taking her out for potty. but when she seas the door is closed even if she had done the business half an hour age she does it behind the door and when i yell at her saying no( not yelling loudly for sure) she puts on an " it is not a big deal" face and walks away not sooner that finishing the job though. she is 5 months and she is supposed to hold it for six hours why she does not? even those one week that i was taking her out before rain started, she had perfectly understood that i want her to go out and she used to lick my hands when she felt the urge, but if i was a liitle bit slow in changing my cloth for any reason she wouldn't trouble herself holding it, and i should add that she used to ask for being taken out upto 20 times a day. how can i teach her to hold it? how many times am i supposed to take a 5months old dog out for the business? and if they say that she should hold it for 6 hours at this age why when it comes to houetraining they say that i should take her out 10 minutes after drinking eating and getting up from a nap? i am not a lazy owner who looks for a simple way i just want to know that what SHOULD i do? if i am supposed to take her out every single hour ok i will do that but what about holding it and the last question when she licks me as a sign for potty and she has been taken out 20 minutes ago shall i take her out again? if i don't won't she think that I HAVE NOT LEARNT what licking means? ( sorry it became so long but please correct my english as well, i am not an english speaker) moreResolved Question: Problems with house-training a puppy?
We've had our new puppy for about 1 month now, and he still pees/poops all over the house, we take him out front whenever he starts getting restless or wakes up, and he does do his business outside, but he'll still just go all over the house. We have a 2 year old dog(same breed: bichon-shitzu) who was house-trained in about 2 weeks, and he was able to hold it in until we got home at lunch and he could even hold it if we didn't come home for quite a bit. He hasnt had an accident in the house since he was house-trained. The worst part is, now that this new puppy is going all over the house, our well house-trained 2 y/o dog is starting to think it's okay that he can do it to, this has only happend a couple times, but it's very unusual for him because he's always been well trained. I'm getting so annoyed by this because I'm 14 years old and my parents arent home all the time so I am always cleaning up his messes and having to keep an eye on him at home all the time when I'd like to go out.Yeah we tried puppy-pads the first week we had him. He did not catch on at all. :(My parents didn't crate-train him because once he'd start whining they'd get annoyed and just let him out. It's really dumb, but I think it's to late now because he's had the run of the house for a month. It's really dumb how they didn't crate train him** moreResolved Question: where can i find dog training insurance?

I've had my spitz for 2 days and trying very hard to teach it where to do its business. I know dogs need to pee when they wake up, so this morning it woke me up at 6am and I took to the backyard on a leash walking back and forth (sometimes it tends to sit there and ignore me). After maybe 15 minutes of it mucking around in the grass and chewing it, I think maybe it doesn't need to pee so I take it inside. As soon as I turn my head it runs into the kitchen where my dad is cooking, and just starts peeing! >< I don't yell at it, I stay calm... I grab some newspaper and put it on the puddle of pee and let it soak up. Then I put the newspaper onto its toilet training pad and let it sniff it. Will this work? Is it bad? This has got to be the hardest thing to train a dog to do!!! ANY ADVICE WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED!!! moreResolved Question: Frustrated with my dogs?
Well I have three pet dogs and they're pretty much starting to drive me crazy. Two of them we've had for about 2 years now, and the other one is a small puppy we barely got about three weeks ago. One of my older dogs is female and the other older dog is her son. The female is CONSTANTLY attacking the puppy, and it's REALLY pissing me off now. The puppy is always annoying the hell out of the older two. She bites them really hard and tries to play with them when they're not in the mood. The older female dog is the only one that attacks her. The older male dog just snaps his teeth at her to scare her away. The puppy is also COSNTANTLY peeing and doing her "business" inside the house. We keep them in the kitchen now at night so she doesn't ruin the living room floor. Side question: How do we house train the puppy? So yeah, whenever the older dog attacks the puppy, my mom hits her. I REALLY hate it that she does it but there seems to be nothing else that works. A problem we've always had with our pets is that, when they're causing trouble and they know they're not supposed to do it, they run when we catch them instead of getting out of the habit of doing it. What can we do to get our dogs to stop fighting? moreResolved Question: Question about my dog peeing in the house?
Hey All, I am currently raising a guide dog puppy who is 14 weeks old and still has accidents in the house sometimes. Our 4 year old terrier who is HOUSE TRAINED has all of a sudden started peeing and pooping inside!! We though maybe she is copying the pup or marking her territory?? How do I make her stop!! It bad enough we have to clean up one lot of business let alone two!! moreResolved Question: My 8 month old lab is acting out, what should I do?
First, off my dog was well potty trained I live in an apartment I crated him at first he hated it so I trained him to stay inside loose. He did great. I would come home let him out he did his business fed and left him outside for awhile. Then out of nowhere he started gettin into my bills chewing them and my dvds. So as punishment I spanked him while showing him the mess. Wouldn't listen so I crated him one day.... He pooped in his cage so I spanked him a few times. Now before I get people telling me it's bad to hit dogs...I really don't believe that. I don't abuse him or neglect him. He's very spoiled has a bunch of toys, I play with him every night, he sleeps with me, and I feed him well, but sometimes I feel like it takes more than simple redirection...or stern remarks...(believe me I tried that in the beginning) so I just need a gew tips. Thanks! moreResolved Question: Can you paper train a puppy and THEN teach it to "go" outside?
My family is adopting a Keeshond puppy from a breeder this coming February eight weeks after it's born, and there is a conflict of interests in our house when it comes to housebreaking the dog. I had agreed to take on the training responsibilities from the start, and was going to crate train the dog. I agreed to take the "night shift" and wake up every few hours to take the puppy out for the first couple of months. Now my mother wants to change the game-plan. She is planning on buying a wire "playpen" sort of device that attaches to the front of the dog's crate, and then lining it with puppy pads so that the dog can go into the playpen to relieve itself at night and then go back into its crate. I disagree with this method, believing it will be harder to break the dog from the paper training method than just crate training it from the start. Despite this, my mother is no longer listening to my plans and simply going about her own. This is our first "inside dog," and I would rather take my time with training him rather than just going with whatever method is easiest when he's a pup, but he'll be the FAMILY pet, and there has to be some sort of common ground between all of the people who will be interacting with him regularly. Can anyone confirm or deny the usefulness of paper training a puppy before teaching it to do its business outside? moreResolved Question: Care tips for a family owning two one month old puppies?
Now, I know what you're gonna say the moment I mention that besides my dad, none of my family members have any experience with owning a dogs before. But just hear me out OK? I just got two one month old puppies. A male (Russell) and a female (Merry). They're siblings and a mixed breed. Definitely part Terrier but not sure who the father is (most probably a rottweiler cause the pups kinda look like him especially Merry but on can never be too sure) They were adopted and we already bought their cage, water bottle, food dish, puppy food, provided them with towels and collars and already bought leaches. Question is : 1) I've installed the water bottle (you those drinking bottles for hamsters? It's just that this ones for dogs). But the puppies don't seem to acknowledge its presence nor are they even sniffing it out. Merry manage to drink some water only after I held her near the bottle while she started licking and drinking it. But Russell didn't even lick it when I did the same to it. Should I let it be and hope they will eventually start drinking from it or should I start putting water in a drinking dish. If I put water in a drinking dish, what if they make a mess out of it? 2) If given puppy food to feed them, should I soften it first? If I should, how much should I soften it until and do I use warm or hot water. 3) What are the best ways to potty train them? I've been told to keep a consistent meal time. After feeding them, I've been advised to keep them outside the cage but in the compound until they're done with they're business and all. When they do their business, I've been told to immediately put newspaper under their butt. Should I keep this up or is there a better and faster way to potty train them? 4) How should I bathe them? I tried it today. My method was to put them in a tub, hose them with water, but not too hard. Then I put some shampoo on them. But I didn't know how to scrub them so I just made sure that the shampoo reaches the body, tail, hands, and legs. I avoided the head and the eyes, nose and mouth area. Is this the right way to bathe the puppy? Also, since its our first time, the puppies started whimpering when I tried to hose them with water to wash off the shampoo. Of course I avoided to yes and nose and mouth too. Please include any other puppy tips too as I definitely do not want my puppies to end up suffering!!!!!Oh one more question! Is it normal for puppies to sleep with their eyes half open and jerk and twitch when they sleep? Also, Is it normal for puppies to scratch the place their collars are?OK got the warning got the message. But I just wanna get one thing straight! I did not just get them whenever I liked. It was the owner who called and CONFIRMED that the pups weren't relying on their mother's milk anymore. Besides, we were suppose to collect them in November but the owner wanted to get rid of them so fast that we had to take it. moreResolved Question: Dog pooping in his pen?
We just adopted a new pup. The SPCA estimated he is between 6-8 months. They also think he is a German Shepherd/Pit Bull mix. We currently have two other dogs (both are about 11). During times when the dogs can not be attended they are kept in a 8 by 8 pen connected to an 8 by 8 shed. There is a concrete slab floor in both. Until recently we also had wooden platforms in the shed so the dogs did not have to lay on the concrete. Initially the new pup pooped and peed in the shed area on the wood platform. I was not overly concerned because he is new and really had not been here long enough to realize that I would be letting him out at regular intervals. So I removed the wood platforms and cleaned the pen from top to bottom and temporarily restricted access to the shed. I have purposely kept him on a very tight schedule since brining him home. I take him out on the lead first thing to do his business in our designated spot. Cuing with words like pee and poo and giving praise when he does it. We then walk for 3 miles. On return he is returned to the pen where I now feed him. He is let out at least every 2-3 hours to play, train, sniff etc but always first on the leash to his potty space. He is fed dinner around 4. He is a great dog...very smart, eager to please, great with the kids etc. And for several days - no mess in the pen during the day or overnight. So I rewarded him by opening the shed back up. That night I awoke to find he had peed there. Cleaned it with pinesol, washed it down etc. Gave him another chance and again the next day awoke to find pee and poop. I have also been very vigilant about feeding and giving water at the same intervals. He appears to be pooping 3 times a day (morning, noon and night). I let him out last night like I have been doing every night at 10 oclock. He peed and pooped. The next morning at 6 when I went out to get him, I found pee and poop all over the shed. What else can I do to help discourage him peeing and pooping in this space. It is difficult to clean because of the shed structure not too mention cleaning every morning takes a lot of time. But I hate restricting the shed access not just from him but the other dog that we keep with him. Our others dogs would never poop or pee in the pen. I did borrow a crate from my sister but I hate the idea of crating him. We tried with another dog and it just caused her so much anxiety. I also see what a smart dog he is. I am just afraid that because he has gone there once (in the shed) he just assumes it is okay to go again. I have tried cleaning and scrubbing but I am not sure you can ever completely get the smell gone. I have also started placing his food in the shed hoping he will not want to go where he eats. I have been doing everything I can to keep him on a very strict routine. I am a work at home mom and I have been very vigilant about spending a lot of time with him and helping him and my other dogs make the transition. I am wondering if perhaps I just re-opened the shed too soon. Our other dogs hold it in. He is let out at 7 and then again at ten. He is offered water at 7 but not at ten. I do not think it is an issue of not being able to hold it. We are only talking about 8 hours and he is generally peeing and pooing before going down for the night. I just think he assumes the shed is a place to go because he has done it before. So what else can I do to assure him it is not. (IE would spraying something inside the shed help etc.)As a note...The dogs are outside dogs. They are kept in the pen overnight because they do not sleep inside the house. There are times during the day where I am not home and I have no choice but to put them in the pen. The shed is there to provide shelter/warmth if needed from rain etc. I am a serious dog owner who sees having a pet as huge responsibility. Answers like "why are your dogs in a pen in the first place" are really not helpful. They are outside dogs and happy and healthier than many "indoor" couch potato pets I have met. Having a working dog locked up in a house all day is in my opinion cruel. My dogs are exercised regularly and given lots of attention but when we are not there to provided supervision the pen is a safe place where they are kept. moreResolved Question: My dog is aggressive!!! And I'm proud of it!?
No, I'm not talking about mine. All my dogs are well behaved, sociable, have stable temperaments & are well trained. I am talking about some owners that I have come across who own insane, unsociable, uncontrollable, aggressive dogs. There was once I met an owner at a training school. He was just walking around with his family, just checking out all the dogs. We started talking when he complimented on my dogs for being so well trained & well behaved. I asked him where was his dog. He said it was at home because it is "very naughty" & "aggressive". His dog was a Rottweiller & he said when a passerby walks pass his house, his dog would leap up & down, ramming against the main gate in the porch, barking & growling aggressively at the person. And the thing that got me worried was when he said, "I like dogs like that", & he put on that proud grin on his face. There were several more owners with aggressive dogs that I have met that allow their dogs to lunge at other dogs & people while it's on leash & the owners will just stand there, smiling & don't even bother to stop it. Some would PRAISE & PET their dogs for their horrible behaviour! These kind of owners always seem to feel good & very proud that their dogs are aggressive & uncontrollable. I watched one video on YT of a Australian Shepherd aggressively barking & trying to lunge at people that were just walking in a park & the people were like 30 feet away from it, minding their own business & its owner was holding on to the dog whilst filming the whole thing. I asked the owner why he allowed his dog to do that & he replied to me with so much bitterness & proudness saying, "You got a problem with this? I like my dog being aggressive & if anyone dares to come close to me & my house, I will let my dog go after them. You dare to come to my house now?" I was really flabbergasted by his reply! These people really don't realize how much damage their dogs can do to an innocent person or child if it really does get loose & attacks someone. I'm talking about both small & big dogs. Don't they realize that their dogs could get put down for it & they can go to jail for intentionally allowing an aggressive dog to attack someone? Some people are just so stupid & really should never ever own a dog & use them as weapons. Have you come across anybody with this kind of attitude before? What do you think of them & what did you tell them? moreResolved Question: My 9 month old dog still isnt housetrained?
Me and my husband are at our wits end! we have a female Collie cross Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever who is 9 months old and still isn't properly house trained. She understands the concept of it and will always go to the toilet if we take her outside and also she wont mess in the house if we are around (if she needs to go out when we are there, she will go to the front door and look at us) its only if we go out (which is never usually for more than a couple of hours) or when we go to bed. She sleeps in the kitchen overnight and we have started taking away her water about 3 hours before bedtime and putting it back in the morning when i get up, after reading that it could help. She was doing quite well with holding on overnight for a while (holding on all night with no accidents) but most of the time she will mess. We have a good routine and we don't expect her to hold on for unfair periods of time, I stay up each night until about 12 or 1o'clock in the morning and let her out to do her business (which she always does) and my husband does a night shift so he lets her out at 7o'clock in the morning when he gets home. however he nearly always seems to come home to mess as well. Not only this but she will often mess on her bed as well, which I thought dogs didn't do, so I think that crate training is unlikely to work as well because the whole point of crate training is to take advantage of the fact that a dog wont soil its bed! We really don know what to do anymore as we have tried everything and the problem never seems to get any better, I know of dogs that are fully house trained at a much younger age than her, and I thought that at 9 months old she should be nearly there by now! moreResolved Question: I read this on a website is any of this true?

Hello I am starting a dog walking.training business and am having difficulties coming up with a short catchy business name. Any suggestions would be great. Something unique and fun maybe? Thank you in advance. moreResolved Question: Any helpfull advice to help potty train a puppy?
Hello, I have a 11 week old chocolate lab pup that I am trying to house train. I have had him for 5 weks now. He is getting progressively worse not better. I just don't seem to know what else to do. I take him outside atleast every hour and about 10-20 mins. after he eats and drinks. I reward him for going potty and poop outside and let him know what a great job he did. The last couple weeks he has been going pee and poop in the house like crazy. Like I said he gets taken out many many times throughout the day and does his business, so it's like all this extra pee and poop magicaly appears and he wants to dispurse it throughout my house. I have tried to take him out even more than I usualy do and that doesn't work either, he just stays outside for 20 mins. to 1/2 hour and comes in and pees and poops inside. And, yes, I stay out there with him, so it's not like I just leash him up and leave him out there. He is not overfed or anything to make him constantly keep going. He gets 1 cup of dry food 2x a day and water at will. I always take him out a bit after I hear him drink too. I have tries to mop the floors with vanilla extract to get his smell out so he wouldn't think it's a bathroom. No matter how I dicipline him it doesn't seem to work either, so I think I shouldn't even bother to, but then how will he know he did something wrong? I have tried to put his nose in it and say "bad dog" and I have put him into his crate for 5 mins. on some occasions and other occasions I have put him outside on his long leash for about 20 mins. None of these tactics seem to work and my puppy seems to be making more mistakes every day. This is starting to get out of control. I don't know what to do...I don't want to have to get rid of him...please tell me that this can be resolved. Other than his potty issue he is a great dog!!! One of the best dogs I have ever had!!!O.k....this is to "suzy49" and anyone else with a response like hers. Thanks for the advice, but the reason I asked a question is to get answers...not to be given a link to go buy a product to get the answer. If you have used this technique, and it works...why wouldn't you give some basic strategies of how it works? So, please don't leave me any links trying to sell me something. I'm sure I can resolve this problem without giving some site 3 payments of $29.95 to tell me how to get my dog potty trained. This is why this site was developed......we all help eachother out....An answer shouldn't come with a pricetag. Unless you're just trying to sell these videos, you should be happy to share what you have learned if they work so well. And to everyone else, I'm not being cheap....I just hate when you ask a question and someone tells you to go to some link to get all your answers and there just trying to sell you something. moreResolved Question: How do I appeal on a council decison if I feel its wrong?
Well for ages I have been looking for a opportunity to start my own Business. I am unemployed and used to care for my sister full time. Employment is hard to come by with whats going on with job cuts ect. I hit on a idea, to start my own hot dog cart run. I have had this idea for well over four years now, but its only now that I have set my heart doing it. I contacted the council and asked if I could do this? For weeks and weeks I was past from department to department, until finally my letter was passed on property and Technical team for consideration. After a month of waiting, I decided to Chas them up. I basically discovered a gap in the market for the beach I live across the road from. There are not many shops along this beach and some of the areas of the beach doesn't have enough coverage for the Holiday makers on the beaches to get to a shop easier. So I came up with the idea of a hot do cart, that will cover the areas, where the nearest cafe or bar was over a 15 min walk away. Well finial today, I got to talk to someone on the phone and he rejected my idea. I knew it was a possiabity, but I felt his reason where more based on the councils intrests, related to money they could loss on rent from nearby shops. What gets me, is I weren't planning to trade out side these shops, nor nearby. There are other things running along the beach e.g like a fun train ect. Do you think I should appeal against this, based on the reasons they gave? Thanks:) moreResolved Question: How can I potty train my "puppy-mill" dog?
First off, my dog is 8-9 months old, by what the vet has told me. She has been spayed (at 15 weeks old). She is a medium sized beagle, not the large or mini. I don't know why, but the woman had her seperated from her other 2 sisters when I got her. I have already talked with the shelter woman, the vet, and the ASPCA about my problem and I'm tired of being like, "Aww, you peed (or pooped) in the floor. Let's take you outside since you already peed (or pooped) in the house and so you think outside time is your reward for peeing (or pooping) all over the carpet." I'm ready to start something different, maybe punishable. **Sorry in advance to all of the PETA or Animal Activist for anything that I say or any person that answers my question.** Ok, my first way of potty training was going by the adoption papers and taking her out after she eats... yadda yadda. She would wonder off while she was eating and poop or pee somewhere then go back to eating. Then, I tried kennel training. You know, where you put her in the box for so long after she eats and then take her out for a few minutes and if she don't do anything you bring her back in and put her back in the box... Well, that didn't work. She would either use her box, which was also her bed, or she would do it in the floor when I am getting the leash on her. I give her a 1/2 cup of Beneful in the afternoon with a 3/4 cup of water. In the evening, about 6pm, I give a 1/2 cup of Beneful and 3/4 cup of water again. That would equal up to a whole cup of food plus 1 1/2 cups of water a day. As soon as she is done I take her out. Then I wait... Sometimes a very long time, 50 minutes a few times. There has been many times where she wants to go back in and whines and barks until she gets in. When we went back in she ran to a spot in the floor and did her business. I did do what ASPCA told me and I picked it up and did nothing to show it was bad. She wags her tail like it was a good thing. I'm tired of trying to potty train her now. If I cannot find of way of training her then I think I might just take my $250 loss and give her back to the shelter. I don't know if this would cause any issues with her potty behavior, but her potty training was going great until she got spayed. Her crate is only big enough for her to turn around in. If she does use her crate (she knows the word for it as box) she is up against the side and cant lay down unless she wants to lay in her own pee or poop. I have used puppy pads and those made it harder for me to train her to go out. I made a mistake when I said Beneful. I keep calling it Beneful for some reason. It's Ol'Roy's Kibbles, Chunks, and Chews. (Might be cause they look the same or something, I don't know.) I have had her since she was 12 weeks old. I can't remember what else you all have asked me. Hope that is it.I meant to add that the puppy pads made her think that her pillow bed (for when we are home and can keep an eye on her) was for her to go potty on also. The woman that I got her from is a stay at home wife (i guess), because her husband is a Federal Lawyer. She lives in a very rich neighborhood and I don't think she wanted us to know where she lived. We met her in a parking lot and had the other woman to bring her 2 sisters also. I was looking specifically for a beagle. All of the dogs they had with them were very well taken care of. No fleas, no matted hair, gums were pink, and their eyes were clear. They all looked like they were fed very well and hydrated. She even had copies of the vet visit papers for wormer and vaccines. She was a very neatly dressed woman and she had an expensive vehicle. She seemed very serious and passionate about the dogs. apawandaprayer.com is how I found her. moreResolved Question: What things usually happen whilst at puppy training?
I am going to my first puppy training class tonight that was recommended by my vet. But i am wondering what things happen there usually. Because due to the fact that my home is on a slight hill there is a wall that stops where my grass starts so there was no need for a fence and my dog is not there other than when he does his business, so i put him on the lead and he follows me whilst on it and evan when he stops a little tug on the lead and he walks again. i thought it was just because there was no distractions in my garden but yesterday we went for our first walk and he walked beside me all the way, didn't evan pull. so i dint think that i need leash training, he already knows sit, down and stay. i think the only thing i am going to get out of this experience is for him to start getting socialized, which is worth it because he is a german shepherd dog and will be big so needs to be good with people and other dogs. is 9 months old now and we are having to go back to basics with the toilet training. Let me explain the situation. My sister has always been at home since we brought our toy poodle home at 9 weeks of age and he's been taught to go outside to do his business. But because my sister has always been at home he hasn't really learnt he can't do it in the house when we aren't around, so we have gone back to basics in retraining him again. Now heres the problem. He for some reason pees on my other dog's bed. I thought at first he was making his mark on my dog's bed so we had to put our other dog's bed away before going to bed at night - which doesn't seem to bother our other dog. We started doing this two months ago. Now we've gone back to putting his bed back on the floor where it belongs - its still being weed on. What can i do to resolve this? Is there some spray or something i can use to stop him peeing on my dog's bed? My first order of business, updating Rex's rabies shot as well as his parvo, distemper... and others. I just got a letter in the mail today saying that he needs his vaccinations again as it has been a year since we did it. So I'll be able to make an appointment sometime in the next 1-2 weeks. And in a couple of more months I'll have enough saved up to get my two cats vaccinated, for rabies and whatever else is suggested by the vets. Anywho I was starting to think more about getting my dog as well as my cats microchipped. My dog currently wears two ID tags, but they could fall off. And with my dog being trained to the ingroung fence he now has more freedom then when he was tied. He's just to precious, you know if I ever lost him I don't know what I'd do. Also my 2 cats are outdoors a lot and they don't like wearing collars, also if they do wear collars they normally get it tangled around there paws which could cause injury. So I would like them to get microchipped also. When I was working at the vet, through school they told me Microchipping was painful for the pets. I don't want to to cause them to much pain:eek:! So anyone who has had their pets microchipped, or anyone who knows about this could you please post some info, like is it dangerous for the pets, how does it work and what would the price be, for dogs as well as cats. Thanx everyone...Thanx. And while I was at the vet the pets I saw that got microchipped had been put under for opperations too like spays or neuters...Thanx for the great site Jessie moreVoting Question: housebreaking issues with newly adopted dog from shelter?
My boyfriend and I just adopted a dog (about 5 months old- a terrier mix although we definitely think she has a little lab in her) from a shelter one week ago. When we took her home she was extremely timid- would not leave her bed and we had to carry her outside. Everyday we had her she opened up more and more and now she goes up and down the stairs to get outside and has her tail wagging for the entire walk. Our problem is housebreaking. For the first 4 days she would NOT got to the bathroom outside, and even after long walks down the street or to the park, she would usually come back and pee inside, once even peed in her bed which I know is very strange for dogs. In the past 2 days she has started to pee and poop in one particular spot outside of our building (we live in manhattan) in the ivy beds right outside of our doors and our neighbors are starting to give us dirty looks because they see us standing there with our pup (Penny) letting her "do her business". In addition to having trouble going to the bathroom in any other spot, she holds everything in and has been regularly peeing once a day and pooping once or twice a day since we got her even though she is eating and drinking normally. It can't be good for her to be holding her urine in for sometimes more than 24 hours?! When she does go to the bathroom outside we praise her heavily and offer her treats, and when she goes inside we say no and remove her from the room to clean up and use a no-odor spray. We're looking for any suggestions to help her pee and poop ANYWHERE else besides the ivy beds outside of our doors. We will stand and wait in an appropriate spot for 3-5 minutes to give her a chance to do her business but she will not go unless she is in her ivy patch- even if we know she really has to go. We live in the city so leaving her poop outside is not a possibility. :: We have her crate trained- and she loves it in there, but even after two rough days of taking her out on the hour for two days straight and keeping her in the crate at all other times she would find the second in between the door and the crate to pee or poop:: moreResolved Question: how is a nanny/babysitter supposed to be treated?
Hi there. I'm a nanny/babysitter for a family on weekends and I don't really know what to think about how they're treating me. When I am there (and i work 3pm-12am Sat, then 630am to 3pm Sun): -their 3 children under the age of 3 are well fed, cared for, dressed, changed frequently (every 1.5-2hrs and on demand if poopy), played with minus television (apparently mom, dad and other sitters put tv on all day long, nonstop, to the point where 20month old knows each and every song on every show and can recite the whole show word for word.) we do lots of books, puzzles, ring around the rosie, you get the point. -their dishwasher is loaded, unloaded, and loaded again. -their 2 dogs and 2 cats are fed, watered, petted, let in and out (all day long), and cleaned up after. -their floors are swept at least 4 to 5 times (because of crumbs and pets) and swiffer wet jetted once (and then touch ups as needed because of the dogs) -their house is tidied to the best of my ability (i dont always know where something goes) -any messes i or the kids make are cleaned promptly. -they are always updated on who ate what and when, who pinched whom, etc... -working on potty training the 3 yr old who is not cooperating and wont eat anything but pizza and fries. and... i bring my own small child under age 2 with me because i do not have a babysitter myself and my baby is well behaved and enjoys the kids. it's not an issue that i bring him. this was my 3rd weekend working... my first weekend, apparently the children's aunt told the parents that i had done a load of laundry with a bunch of towels in it and made everything linty (i had not touched laundry and told the family that i didnt do laundry because i know how particular people can be with laundry)... this aunt straight up lied and blamed it on me... they bitched because there was too much plastic in the trash last weekend, they did not tell me they recycled, therefore i did not know, their bins weren't visible either. considering how much i clean their freakin house, do they really need to nit pick? i keep their house cleaner than they do, with ONE MORE KID THAN THEY HAVE! the mom moved one of the toddler's cribs out because the tot kept messing with light switches, apparently she didn't inform the dad..i moved the crib out so the tot could go to sleep without any distractions (mind you, the crib can be pushed back in one quick movement, it was really no big deal)... in the morning the dad flipped out on me, kind of yelling, saying 'why was the baby's crib moved out in the middle of the room!!" and the mom was like 'oh, i started that..' the dad's loud and comes on a little too strong, kind of like that guy on cake boss. i'm supposed to be out at 3, they're ALWAYS LATE... today I didn't get out til 4:30, no call, nothing. and they seemed put off that i had to jet because I had been there since 630 AM and was exhausted, plus I had a family thing to go to! this morning, I showed up at 6:25, five whole minutes early, and the mom was like 'is your clock wrong?' and i was like 'no, i think it's 5 minutes to 630' and she growled 'oh, my clock must be wrong then. i thought it was too early'. my first time there, there was like $50 conveniently left in the middle of a dining room table sticking out under some mail or something. Their bank information is everywhere all over the table. Plus, the dad's prescription pain killers are on the hutch, in the most random place. I feel like they're trying to set me up. Maybe I'm being paranoid because I'm offended, but this just seems fishy to me, and no, I don't touch, look at any of that crap, I could care less about someone's personal business, I think meds should be locked away strictly because there's small children in the house, and I'm there to make money, not take what's not mine. I just need some feedback. I really liked the gig when I first started, the kids are so sweet and it's a way for me to make some extra money and still keep my baby with me. I think I'm a great sitter/nanny, but I'm getting the impression that they're taking advantage of me. PS. the pay is good, but it always seems like I'm getting jipped like $20 because they're always late, and although the pay is pretty good, it's still on the low side compared to what I normally charge. moreResolved Question: Would shelters allow this?
Kind of long but, I have a friend who has his own dog training business. I have been helping him in training and working dogs, he asked me today if I would like to work for him and maybe become business partners ... So im trying to think of some ways I could get more customers and make the business pretty successful. He's a great trainer with about 20 yrs experience has won many titles in obedience and Schutzhund...he hasn't lived here long and hasn't got his name out yet. I figured maybe if we donate time to the shelters and offer 2-3 free hours a weekend of training to their adoptable dogs then maybe they would let us put business cards out and start directing people who adopt a dog towards us. Only thing I can think wrong with it is that I think alot of shelters already have some kind of trainer they go to, but not exactly sure. then again, they may let us because it's volunteer. Thanks for any help. If you have any other suggestions let me know. We have tried newspapers, craigslist and even buy booths at city events (when its about dogs). I appreciate it. moreVoting Question: stuck...should I find my dogs a new home or keep trying?
I have two adult dogs. My husband just deployed. I have 4 young kids under 4 and I didn't expect that things would be this hard. My youngest daughter just got diagnosed with possible cancer and I have to take her up to a university hospital next week to to further testing. I don't know whether it's from the stress of having my husband gone, my daughter being sick, and the everyday stress of having so many young kids or an actual ilness brought on by something else, but I was just admitted into the hospital twice for migraines, and I had that problem where you have swelling with fluid in your brain. My heart rate, oxygen level, and blood pressure all dropped dangerously low, but I ended up being ok a nd they sent me home. I am still having chronic migraines tho, and they don't know why. ANYWAy, here is my problem. My two dogs are wonderful dogs and I love them dearly. They have, however, started going to the bathroom horribly in the house, ecspecially in my kids' bedrooms. I'm talking, my whole house is literally covered in pee and poo and I can't get the smell and all the stains out no matter what I do. I am having to steam clean my carpet several times a week just to get it as clean as I can. They were completely potty trained at once with no accidents at all. Now it's like as soon as they get the chance, even if they don't "have" to go, they'll do it. I took them to the vet and they're both physically completely healthy. I let them go outside constantly since I'm a stay at home mom and praise them when they go outside. Most of the time I even leave my door to the back yard open so they can go in and out freely. They'll just go upstairs and do their business like they've been locked inside for weeks or something. I can't take it anymore. My house smells like I'm a filthy person and I'm so OCD it isn't even funny. It was bad enough with their fur, but I love them so much and it ws my decision to get them so I groomed them regularly and vaccumed and dealt with it, but now my daughter who's 7 months can't even learn to crawl without me worrying about her putting her face and little knees in dog poo and pee. I spend asmuch time as I can with the dogs. I have tried every sort of advice that people have given me to make them stop but they wont. Kenneling them works, obviously, they wont go when they're in it, and they'll go outside, but they'll come right back in and force pee or poo out on the carpet. I don't want to keep them kenneled up or cooped up ina small part of the house because of this. They have also started to get into my baby's diapers (usually I get them outside in the trash but sometimes when I'm really busy I'll leave one on the counter or in the trash inside) and they'll eat it and drag it all over the house so I literally have baby poop/pee and soggy diaper particles all over my floor which is SOOOOO hard to get up. It makes my house smell like a sewer. i try my best to not forget even one diaper but it's beginning to feel like I'm a prisoner in my own home and I have to walk on egg shells to be perfect so they dont' trash stuff. I can't take it anymore. I'm one person at my wits end. i'm so worried about daughter and husband and with my illness, I'm physically almost dead. I love my dogs more than anything and for the longest time Ihave been holding it out and keeping them and doing whatever I can to make it better (even bringing them to training but I can't afford $800 anymore) but I'm starting to think that I can't do it anymore. One minute I have decided that it's best to find them a good home and then the next I'm thinking that I'm just saying that because I'm just drained right now and it'll get better and they'll change or I'll figure something out later. I don't know what to do anymore. I know this was long sorry, but I don't know whether or not I should keep my dogs. I know if I did, there would be a part of me that would always regret it and I would always miss them, but I don't know if it would be better for them and my sanity, and my family. What should do? Please help, thanks. please no mean people I can't take much more drama without breaking. moreResolved Question: How can I get my dog to not bark at the house when he's on the tie out?
I have a 2 year old lab/husky mix. He's been with us for about 10 days now. He's living indoors with us, but I'd also like him to spend time outside on the tie out. We have a big back yard, so we bought a long tie out and he has plenty of space to move around. Being a big dog, I don't think he should spend all of his time inside. He always has water when he's outside, and there are many shade trees in the yard too. He's been quite clingy from the start. Always nudging people trying to get them to pet him and following people around. I think he has a little separation anxiety. We're using crate training and can put him in there when we leave, and sometimes I put him in there when I'm doing house work so he doesn't get in trouble when I can't keep an eye on him, and so he doesn't try to "help" me too much. He's quiet when he's in there and just lays down and waits until I'm done or until when we get home. When I put him outside, he'll do his business, and then bark at the house. I've tried staying out there with him for awhile and seeing if he'd like to play with me before I leave him and before I take him back inside to make being outside seem like a good thing. I've read not to give him attention when he's just barking because then he learns to bark all the time and that gets him attention. So I don't want to go get him when he's barking. Is it best to wait until he's quiet (which seems like it could take hours to happen) to go get him and bring him inside? I understand he's been tied out his whole life prior to us adopting him. And was in the shelter for at least a few months before we adopted him as well. Could this sort of separation anxiety thing be a reaction to getting more attention than he was used to? I love to give him attention and love and petting, but I do want him to be independent and not always need to be glued to my side. But we're also trying to make sure he's not to pushy...jumping up, or knocking you over trying to get attention. We've been mainly teaching him to sit next to someone as a way of asking to be pet instead of being pushy. Plus...he won't play outside with people....I've tried fetch, and just general running around with him....he soon stops and just rubs up on me and only wants to sit and be pet forever. My husband's trying to take him running regularly to get him some good exercise since he won't play much with us in the yard. Okay, so this is getting long....The big questions....Should I wait until he stops barking to go outside and give him attention again? Any advice on helping him become a bit more independent so I can get some stuff done around here without him being right next to me? How can I help him feel more okay with being outside alone and not needing to be around me all the time?Okay...I feel I need to add details...I do not have a fenced in yard and the next door neighbors also have dogs that they occasionally tie out. So to limit visiting (because we've already been to visit the neighbors once and they did not get along). I know everyone's all like "Just let him in!" But maybe it's just a personal belief that dogs, horses, cows, pigs, goats, and even people shouldn't be stuck in artificial dwellings 24/7. When I spend time outside, then the dog is out too. But there are times when I would just like him to be out of the house for 15 or 20 minutes so I can spend time being in rooms in the house that are off limits to him right now...like cleaning upstairs in the bed room...it's off limits to him because he's not fully house trained yet and still follows everywhere and this is a rented house, so I can't have him tearing up the joint if i really need to get something done and don't have another set of eyes to make sure he's where he should be. moreResolved Question: Can anyone help me with crate training my puppy?
My family has just bought a 9 week old english bulldog puppy last week(dog is 10 weeks as of the week this question is posted.) We were told to crate train her and we don't know what to do. She is already very familiar with crates. We first would put her in her crate and shut the door and let her be when we couldn't be with her, but then she'd poop in her cage and step in it. Both my parents and I work all day so no one is here to stay with her, especially when school starts. She's a people person and doesn't like to be alone. We've tried placing her in her crate near our beds, but she wants to be cuddled in with us. We keep her crate in the kitchen now and leave the door open. There are newspapers placed on the ground to where she pees and poops. Unfortunately, now she is so used to doing her business in the kitchen, when we take her outside, she won't go! This is getting to be very frustrating and tiring and we don't know what to do. At night, she occasionally whines, so we just take her out and cuddle her for a bit and then put her back in her crate and she sleeps. We also hide a hot water bottle under the blanket in her crate because we figured she liked the warmth. We understand that we need to stick to a schedule, but it's difficult to when we're all working and can't take her out every 2 hours. I know it's only been a week so she won't be trained for quite awhile, but I want to be sure we're doing it the right way. If you know any books, websites or materials that will help, please let me know! The crate is big enough for her lie down in and circle(walking not running.) moreResolved Question: My Chihuahua and Pekingese ate 1/4 lb of roast beef. Issues?!?!?
Let me start off by saying I am a paranoid puppy mom... So I have a 3y/o male Chihuahua (Loco) and a 1.5 year old Female Pekingese (Zelda). They got their paws on a package of sliced roast beef about 6 hours ago (about 1/4 lb). Loco is acting fine but Zelda whom we finally declared potty trained last week after a month of no accidents is acting strange. When we take them for walks Zelda is the pickiest dog in the world we have ever seen when it comes to finding a place to do her business. It usually takes her at least a few minutes to find the right spot to pee, even after not having a break for 8 hours (not often so please nobody get on my butt about this). We took her out about 3 hours after the roast beef incident and she ran and peed on the closest patch of grass to the door (not a favorite spot of hers). I thought it was odd but didn't think much of it until we were all in the living room and she peed on the carpet right in front of us. She always (without fail) peed in the house where we couldn't watch. (Usually the hallway) So is it just the high amount of salt that is in the meat that she isn't used to and it is making her have to pee more? Or could it have actually messed something up? Or is she just having a revert on her training. Pekingese are not known for being the smartest of dog breeds and our beautiful Zelda is not exception to that rule but she is acting so strangely. Should I be worried? Thanks for your help! moreResolved Question: Training dogs? Advice?
Ok. So thus far, our 9 week old puppy is doing GREAT on potty training. Hes had about 1 accident a day (uisually popps, and I figured its usually in the morning, so im going to make sure he stays out longer in the mornings so he finishes his business). I have a 5 yr old and 18 month old. The puppy gets very excited when he see's the kids. He tries to jump on my 18 month old, and it knocks her over. He is also going through that biting stage. he bites at everything and chews it up. Whats the best way to try to teach him not to do this? Especially not to bite at the kids. My son was playing with him this morning, and the dog tried to bite at his pant leg, and bite his knee. Obviously not hard, he only has his little milk teeth, but enough my son cried and wanted nothing to do with the dog. How can I start teaching the puppy this is bad behavior? Also, when the puppy does go potty outside, should I give him alittle snack as a reward? What snacks are best for a puppy this age? moreResolved Question: Training a dog who normally goes outside to go inside?? 10 points to best answer?
So i just moved from a house with a back yard to a downtown loft. My dog isn't used to this. I want her to start going to the bathroom inside on pads and I am having some trouble doing this. She is a 1 yr old miniature schnauzer. She is very smart and doesn't want to go inside. I brought over my sisters dog that is a tea-cup maltese that is only an inside dog to see if she might show her the ropes but my dog will go everywhere to do her business but the pee pads. Also has any of you tried out those fake grass deals they have? I want to give that a try but I don't know anyone who has tried them out. please help... 10 points to best moreResolved Question: HELP!!!! dog needs to get potty trained!?
my dog pee's everywhere constantly! we've crate trained him and that works out most of the time because once he goes out i can take him outside and he'll go. but he's on and off with his urge to go. now when i take him outside he runs and thinks it's time to play so i have to keep him on the leash but now he holds it until he gets inside to do his business. as for pooping he doesn't go outside at all. since i have cats and their littler boxes are at the bottom of the stairs he likes to go on the ground or on the stairs. i've also tried mats.. he used them for a while and now he doesn't even notice them. please help out if you have ANY advise!!! all answers will be appreciated! my parents are starting to get really frustrated with him and i want to keep him but i can't if he keeps it up * also when he does his business i have put his nose in it and flicked his nose moreTop How To Start A Dog Training Business Links
