Scoring NFL Business

The 2001 Super Bowl did something for Chris Murnaghan's gift shop that years of hard work had not.

It gave her national exposure and a healthy jolt of cash in a few short weeks.

The National Football League allowed Murnaghan to make and sell a decorative ornament she created to depict the big game in Tampa.

In less than a year, the owner of Something Special in South Tampa went from a basic design, to NFL approval, to manufacturing and sale of the $45 keepsake. She gained immediate acclaim from trade publications and was written up in a feature story in the Florida Times-Union newspaper in Jacksonville.

"I felt like Cinderella going to the ball," Murnaghan said. "It was just a big, hairy deal."

Murnaghan was part of an NFL program designed to help businesses owned by women and minorities get their share of the contracts when the big game comes to town. more

As tax forms multiply, business booms for accountants

For every Byzantine form the Internal Revenue Service adds each tax season, it seems business for Collinsville accountant James Funkhouser gets that much better."Our clients have changed so much in the past three, four years," said Funkhouser, who opened TTS Tax Services with his wife in 1980. "Our clients have more tax issues now."So confusing are the forms that small, independent tax preparers like TTS - once hard hit by big-name firms like behemoth H&R Block - have seen a steady increase in business, one so significant it's insulated them against a trove of new tax software, such as the juggernaut Turbo Tax."Some think it's just too complex," said Edwardsville accountant Ed Small, who also taught accounting at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville several years ago.He said ever-changing tax codes - an estimated 15,000 changes, for example, have been made to the 66,000-page federal tax code since the 1980s - have made do-it-yourself taxes just too difficult for some."If all you have is a W-2 and some interest, then you should be able to do your own taxes," he said. more

Resolved Question: Would you buy from my business?

I'm thinking of starting my own home based wedding flower business. I owned my own flower shop for years so I know how to make beautiful arrangements. The business would cater to brides on a tight budget. My question is if you were getting married would you buy from someone experienced and knowledgeable who worked from their home opposed to going to an actual flower shop? I have a spare room that is very nice that I plan on setting up as my "shop". It is plenty big enough to have people in to talk about their wedding and create the arrangements. I could save someone a ton of money since I will have no overhead expenses but I'm not sure if people would be interested. more

Resolved Question: girls!! would you be interested?? need feedback!?

i am about to start a website that is promoting a shopping portal. Stores like Bloomingdales, Macys, Drugstore.com, Saks, Barnes and Nobles and thousands of other stores are signed on to our shopping portal and each store has a certain percentage discount that you get back after you shop there. So my job is to get potential customers onto my website to promote the shopping portal. Besides promoting the shopping portal I would also blog and write articles that would appeal to my demographic of customers who would visit my site, so therefore I would be catering to the women from teenagers to mother and grandmothers. I would write about relationships, health, fitness, life organization, beauty tips, beauty products review, clothing reviews, basically anything that would appeal to the common women of our society today. ------- I am also thinking if I should create a Youtube account and do beauty videos such as juicystar07 and allthatglitters21 do on their accounts. If you do not know who they are, they are makeup beauty gurus who give tutorials on how to do makeups and hair and such. And later on if I get enough fans I might also do vlogs which is exactly what juicystar07 and allthatglitters21 does (videos of their life. like updates on their life and such) I know it sounds completely superficial but there are people out there who do watch these videos and I myself love watching these things. I don't know if I will also do something like this because I need the green light from my boss. (aka my brother - he has his own website and his own business and I am lucky that he is giving me this opportunity to create my own buisness) so I need feedback from all of you guys! Would you be a reader of my website and a potential customer to the portal? (it is basically online shopping but you get a % back on what you spend) Everything is legitimate, no scams nothing. This business is a branch off of an already establish successful company that my brother owns that I have been working on for over a year with him. And seeing that I am only 15 I know what safety precautions to take. I wouldn't give out my number or address and I would use a Pseudonym (fake name/pen name) So would this appeal to you? Sorry this is so long! Thank you!im not advertising because i dont even have the link. i am just asking if people would be interested in such a thing. more

Resolved Question: Having an issue distinguishing our company.?

My partner and I have been working for the past year and a half developing a marketing system to help promote local businesses in a certain niche market (sorry wont say what the niche is). But when we go to pitch our service we are running into problems. First this is what we do: Basically we have developed a website much akin yellow pages which only caters towards this niche, over the past year and a half we have become highly optimized for almost every category in the niche ranking in the top 3 spots in Google Yahoo and Bing (MSN). (outranking even yellowpages, yelp, yellowbook and others) However we are not only offering a subscription into the directory (which gives the clients more exposure). We build each client a website, they get to choose their domain name, we create a custom classified advertisements to use, and we promote their businesses through Google Adwords, (this is done by having adwords drop the click through onto their listing page on our site.) In addition we give the clients access to a backend where they can track how many impressions their classified ads recieve, how many clickthroughs to their website, and a host of other statistical tools. This is above and beyond yellowpages, in fact many clients we talk to say they spend 150-300 a month on yellowpages and recieve NO results. We have a few clients who are very satisfied with the service, and it has helped them land additional business. In fact for most of our clients, only 1 job from a lead covers a months charge or more, and we only charge $50/mo promotional rate for 6 months then it goes to $80/mo from there. Now here is the problem we face when trying to get new clients.... Many of you may have been cold called and pitched by some internet search engine optimization company that promises that they can get you on the front page of Google for a fee.. Most of those companies are shady and provide no results. For some reason when we start talking to people this is what they think we are doing... when in fact this is NOT what we are doing at all! I'm kind of at a how I can effectively market our service without being confused as one of these shady businesses. Since this is not what we are doing. more

Resolved Question: Could someone with political science experience explain this to me?

Why is the republican party catering to its conservative members rather than moderates? Political issues aside, it seems (from a business standpoint at least) more profitable for them to cater to the needs of those in the middle and more likely to switch sides, like the republicans who sometimes vote democrats, instead of the far right, who will never, ever, switch parties. If the far right were to promote their own third party candidate, they could never beat the other two established parties. I assume it would be very much like the far-left candidates who run under a new party and then get 3% of the vote. Wouldn't it work the same way for the right? I know very little about the workings of a political party, so you might have to start at the bottom level to explain this to me. Is it completely unlike a business? Am I making the wrong assumptions about how it works? Is it normal for a party to have a pendulum that swings from liberal to conservative within a party? No, I'm not talking about specific political issues or which is the right way to go. I'm talking about building the party from a numbers standpoint. more

My sister in law and I have been making plans to open a Reception Center that would cater to weddings, business meetings, dances, etc. We had already talked to a bank about investors and were planning on starting this year, however, with the economy plunging last year, our plans changed. This is something we still want to do, does anyone have any advice on what this type of business is doing at economy wise at this time. We live near Dayton, Ohio, which as you might know is having problems due to the closing of several GM plants, NCR leaving, and some other smaller businesses closing. However, I am wondering how recession proof this type of business is. I have tried to contact SCORE for a possible mentor, but have not gotten any response yet. Any ideas on other mentoring programs? Voting Question: Event planning business?

A friend in I are looking at starting a small business on the side and then working our way up. We both enjoy planning events, big or small. We both also love to cook. We were thinking about starting something like an event planning business. Something where we line everything up for someone (from booking venues, getting and mailing invitations, catering small parties, and booking caterers for big parties ect...) we figured that if it was local then we could provide food, if not then we can line up someone to do it. We would fit everything into people's budgets, they would just pay us to do all the work for them, and pay the people and places we book for them. We figured that the internet has come such a long way that we could even help people that live far away by communicating through e-mail and phone, and we would do all the research and contacting people for them. I already have some vendors that I communicate with personally and through e-mail that would help out. Do you think this would be something that people would be interested in? How much do you feel would be a fair price to charge? How would you go about advertising something like this? more

Resolved Question: Can anyone help me on these ALGEBRA II Problems?? Im really stuck on these! Please Help! Thanks :)?

Two people decided to start a catering business. It cost $50, 000 to start up the business. They earn $1350 for each event they cater. Write a linear function to model this scenario. Determine how many events they must cater in order to make their initial contribution of $50,000 back (to regain their investment). You just bought a used DVD player for $24.99. New DVD’s are $18.98 (including tax). Write a linear function that models buying the DVD player and some DVD’s, then use that equation to determine the cost of the DVD player and 7 DVD’s. The cost of printing a store flyer is $450 for 1000 copies and $880 for 2000 copies. Write a linear equation modeling this data. Then, find the amount of money it would cost to print 6245 copies. You are a manufacturer of a certain item. You’ve calculated that you can sell 68 of these items for $6 each and you can sell 29 of these items for $9.50 each. Assuming this relationship is linear, write an equation that relates cost to the number of watches you make. Round to the nearest ten-thousandths more

Resolved Question: How best/How can You Finance this type of business?

For a start, lets say you don't even have a cent/peny in your pocket. You have an "idea" to start a Hotel/Accomodation business. It is catering for 30 residers/customers. Resolved Question: How much should i tip my wedding help bartender,dj,photog, officiant etc...?

I need some advice...should i tip? How much? my photographer is just starting off with her business...so her price was almost half the price of a professional! I am paying $650 plus $65 extra for a disc with all rights to all of my photos to have printed....I still wanted to give her some sort of gift to say thanks for helping us out and for saving so much money! You think maybe a gift card to a restaurant would be reasonable? My dj...is also saving us a little bit of money because he is a past coworker of mine...he is charging us $600 for the whole night everything included...he did however make the comment, in a joking/hinting manner "it will be $600 for the night, and if I do a good job you can tip me if you'd like." So I just don't know how much to give as a tip... My officiant is traveling about 45 mins for our rehearsal the night before and the day of the wedding...so i was thinking a gift card to a restaurant for her as well?? My bartender...maybe a gift of money? I am buying ALL of the liquor, cups, napkins, mixers...EVERYTHING she needs to serve...she just has to show up and serve for 5 hrs I am paying her $15/hr. Plus I will be setting out a tip jar at the reception for her...should I still include a tip in my thank you card??? Caterer...I checked and I am not being charged gratuity it states that "tips are much appreciated however not mandatory." I am having a buffet style wedding...there will be server staff there to help serve the water...and bring in the food, and help package and take down...but that's it. Its a buffet...and we're not having cake for them to serve or cut. I still want to give a tip to show appreciation for their help...but how much?? I wanted to give a more personal gift to my officiant and photographer. As for my bartender, dj, and catering I was thinking a gift of money...I am on a tight budget, I just don't want to seem cheap by any means...but I would like to show my appreciation to everyone helping me create my wedding day! more

Resolved Question: What kind of bank account do I need for an international business?

I want to start my own small business that will cater to a specific niche clientelle in London, Canada, and the US. I've never opened a business account before. I do have my own small business now, but I use a personal bank account only and want to change that and branch out to these countries. That way when someone in London or Toronto wants to make a payment they can either mail a check or do a bank transfer into the account I have in that country. I figure this is what all international companies do yes? How do small business owners set something like this up? Is it that you have One international account or do you have an account for each country? more

Voting Question: What do I do? I'm lost!?

Last week I started Culinary school. This has always been a dream of mine as I want to oneday have my own catering business or maybe even an inn!!... So anyway the school has a lot of guys and very few girls. In my class there are about 4 girls and 20 guys!!...and some of these guys have done other courses, therefore they are considered as seniors. Yesterday we got a group project (on Butchery). My team ( I was appointed team leader, the lecturer appointed me cos I didnt want it and he must think it would be good for me to get rid of my nervousness). So anyway my team has 5 people and I'm the only girl. I think the others in my team are not happy about it. They act as if they have done projects before and that I'm more of a burden to the team. I dont know how to handle this. Most of the time they leave me out. tomorrow we have to decide how we are going to go about with the project and I'm so nervous. Whats even worse is that at the end of the project, we have to make a presentation. I hate publis speaking and get VERY VERY nervous. I dont know how I'm going to get through this. I feel like giving up the course but I know that will be giving up on my dream and taking the easy way out. Other than that I am really excited about learning about butchery. But the guys keep making comments etc, and this really makes me more nervous. What do I do? more

Resolved Question: I want to start a catering business, how can I do it?

I am a very good cook and would love to be a caterer but am unsure how to do it. I have the information about the liscences and certificates I need etc. but are you allowed to say its a funeral you are catering for at somebody's house and they want to serve hot food, are you allowed to heat the food at their house even though I would have made it at mines...this is confusing me. Please can someone help and tell me about this sort of thing...??? more

Resolved Question: HOW DO I PAY MYSELF AS A COMPANY OWNER & OPERATOR?

So I just started my own company that caters to a certain part of the real estate industry, I guess you could say it's like investments & acquisitions. Anyway, it's registered as an LLC & currently, I'm the ONLY part of it; owner & operator, no employees! However, I'm having trouble figuring out how I should pay myself. My company has it's own bank account set up, but I don't want to just take from it. Is there a certain percentage that a sole proprietor of an LLC can pay themselves? If so, how often can you do it, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly? If I were to write myself a check, how would I notate it & would it be considered taxable, like a regular employee check? I also work mainly from home, but I do hope to have a separate office location, maybe within a years' time. I'm sure there's got to be some kind of structure for this as the owner/ operator of your own company, but I've done research & haven't really found the exact answer to my situation. I just want to do this right so whenever tax time comes around, it doesn't look like I'm trying to sneak anything for whatever reason- we all know the government always tries to find ways to get more money from you! I'm very organized too, so I don't want to be using my company bank account for personal expenses. My ex would use his company bank account to pay for personal things & because he had a big company with employees, it was always a mess around tax time for him to separate personal from professional expenses. So here's a summary of my question: a) company is a registered LLC b) involved in real estate c) I currently encompass all parts of the company; owner/ operator d) the business is run from my home e) company has it's own, separate bank account So how would I do this? more

Resolved Question: Do you know why there is no politician that has your interest at heart?

I just saw a special on T.V. that says most politicians are pathological narcissus. Regardless of how republican, independent, or democratic they are, they thrive on self importance. This is why they can sell the country or turn their backs on the very citizens who voted for them and it not faze them. They tend to cater to the group that stands in the way of their re-election. Many have good intentions, and some even hide behind Christ like Governor Huckabee. As long as we believe them and trust in the endless lies they tell, they will forever operate out of an overblown self importance. Let take our current president for example. He is a text book case of a narcisitic person in power. He meant well before getting into the office. Like others before him, he lied about most of the things he promised. Citizens do not want to hear the truth, so they do not get the truth! Once he was sworn in, he immediately brought in all of his buddies and the buddies of Bill Clinton. He said that he would not do business as usual, but he did worse than Clinton in choosing leaders. When the recession intensified, he released almost a trillion dollars. It did not matter that it would not create jobs; it only mattered that he looked as if he was on top of the matter. Having the "image" is very importance of politician, so Obama wanted us to think that he really was trying to create jobs. He convinced us or wanted to convinced us that Infrastructe dollars will create jobs in all areas. He knew this was foolish, but he had to make himself look good. When threatened to lose the hispanic votes in 2012, he immediately nominated a person who was third best and hispanic for Supreme Court. When that was not enough to win them over, he ignored the recession and started talking about citizenship for illegals. Why, because a narcisistic politician MUST be re-elected!. Without the office, he/she is nothing. Not being in the spotlight is often too tramautic for their egos. Time and time again, we have seen them say one thing and do another. We have seen them start wars, reveal our secrets to China, lie to the world, turn their backs on struggling Americans, and even try to give the USA to illegals because self importance must be maintained at all cost. Stop worshipping ignorant men/women (like Pelosi-Palin) in the name of your party! How many more liars do you want to rule over you on the State or National level? We are getting to the point in this country where the people are being forced to take over. It is only a matter of time where the voice of the people will be heard and not ignored. It is safe to say that politics and politicans have gone too far; they are far removed from the plights of those who put them in office. more

Resolved Question: Don't Americans realize that the real problem with their country is "deregulation"?

Let's see here: They've deregulated: 1. Parenting- Kids do whatever they want because parents can't discipline them without fear of the CPS coming after them. 2. Schools- Same thing. You've pretty much got to be a friend of the kids to get anything done. 3. Business- Yeah, we know what happened here. 4. Universities- They've been running wild for a while. Look at some of the building projects these places have embarked on. They're starting to rival places like Vegas for fancy buildings. Also, college classes are more catered to what students want, not what will get them a job. 5. Immigration- Yeah, what a joke. This has basically encouraged crime because our existing lower class have not been able to get jobs. While America isn't as bad as many third-world countries, you'd better bet your panties it's getting there. I remembered going to Australia and seeing how civilized it was. I would love to go there again, for good. America is a nation that will have to give up its delusions if it ever wants to regain its prosperity. Immigration is NOT good, deregulation of everything NEVER works out like magic, you are not entitled to a six-figure lifestyle, and money should never dominate common decency. more

Resolved Question: How to deal with office copy cat? its taking over my life.?

Over the past 20 years I have self-established myself as a fashion designer who is successful. My business is small, but it caters to a particular niche in Toronto. Recently, my worker (i have few as my warehouse is small) has started copying the way i dress. From the highlights in my hair, to the way i put a clip to add volume. I don't mind if she had highlights but the fact that she added a clip freaks me out because we look like twins, even though she is in her early 20s and younger than me. Also, she copies my sense of dressing...It has been going on for a few months but lately it has bothered me a lot. I am in contact with her almost every part of the day as she is my front staff... and now i find myself hiding away in my office on the phone shaking and trembling throughout the day trying to avoid her. I bring my paperwork home at night because i can't do it in the office...This worker has been with me for about a year now..and i can't find good help. I tried to think of a way to tell her lightly or jokingly about how it bothers me SOO much how we looks alike but I feel its so sensitive for me I might break down or lose my diginity. Someone please help this is affecting my confidence. more
