Meat processing company PPCS has confirmed its Oringi plant near Dannevirke and Burnside plant near Dunedin will close.

At Oringi, 466 jobs will go and at Burnside 138. Staff will receive a redundancy package and the company is setting up resource centres to help staff find new jobs.

PPCS chief executive Keith Cooper says the company recognises that the closures have a direct impact on local communities and people's livelihoods.

Pizza Hut is continuing to take a hammering from competitors Dominos and Hell Pizza.

Its sales have dropped again, down 13.3 percent in the fourth quarter.

Restaurant Brands says Pizza Hut sales continue to be disappointing and have affected the total sales across its three brands which are down point nine percent at $69.8 million. more

Lawmakers Question Duplicative Retiree Drug Coverage

Their letter, dated May 12, went to Linda M. Springer, director of the Office of Personnel Management, and Kerry N. Weems, the acting administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

A spokeswoman for the OPM said the agency would not comment because a response was being prepared. CMS also is developing a response, a spokesman said.

In the letter, Waxman and Davis said briefings provided by the two agencies raised questions about whether taxpayer money was being wasted. Officials at the agencies, in discussions with the House committee, said there was almost no coordination between the two programs, the letter said.

For most federal retirees who are 65 and older, Medicare serves as the first payer on insurance claims. When Medicare added a prescription drug benefit in 2003, OPM officials said federal retirees didn't need to enroll in Part D and pay extra for prescription drug coverage because FEHBP benefits were better or equivalent to the coverage provided by Part D. more

Open Question: Am I right to hate my father? What should I do?

I hate my dad. No, I'm not just some teen trying to be rebellious or looking for attention. Read on, because I really need some advice or help. Beware, though -- it's kind of long. When I was little, maybe around four years old, my dad used to touch my clitoris. I remember this because when I'd asked him what he was doing he'd call it the "tickler". I remember sitting on the toilet, minding my own business, and my dad would come and sit on the side of the tub (which is right in front of the toilet). Then, after I wiped and was about to pull up my cute little PJ pants, my dad would start "tickling" me down there. I'm not sure how often this happened because I only remember the one time. I've never told anyone about it. Since the memories are so vague, I'm afraid whomever I tell will just tell me it was probably a dream or something. My mom never spanked me as a kid (although she threatened to once when I misbehaved... for the most part, I was a pretty obedient child). But my dad would punish me for every little thing, though. I don't think this is child abuse... is it? I'm still not sure as to if spanking as punishment is looked at as okay. But he'd hit me HARD. I also remember him making remarks (which, now that I think of it, sound kind of perverted) about how when I get older I'm going to be wearing tight belly tops and I'll get a boyfriend... or something along those lines. I remember him saying "tight belly top," though. Also, a few years later he pointed out, "Samantha, you're starting to grow titties!" and went to touch my breast. That made me feel really uncomfortable. I think he also said something about my mom's breasts when he said that, but I can't remember. Also, for as long as I can remember, he would act as if he knows everything and he's better than everyone. Whenever I felt happy about something (for example, I remember coming home from school once in... fifth grade? Beaming because I'd gotten a good mark on a science project), my dad would scowl and tell me a could've done better, and then follow up with some story about how he just won an award and how all the people at his work threw him a party because he's sooo great. (By the way, the next day at school, I wasn't at all convinced when my teacher told me she was impressed with my project. You know why? Because Daddy said so.) He also always has to be right. Even when he knows he's wrong, he just HAS to be right. He always says the opposite of whatever my mom or I say, and then he just has to be right. And when it's obvious that he's wrong, he manipulates and flips the conversation around to make it sound like he's been saying what I've been saying the whole time and that I've been saying what he's been saying... so he's right (if that even makes sense...). THAT really annoys me. He just tries to make me sound like an idiot. Because "I'm the kid. I know nothing. He does and always will know more than me. Kids like me are stupid and don't know how to think for themselves." Or so he says. He's also really judgemental. Actually, both my parents are really judgemental, but my mom isn't as bad as my dad. Well, yeah, she is, but she doesn't say it in the same manner... anyways: He always judges people on what they wear, how they dress, where they get their hair done, EVERYTHING. Once, when he was picking me up from school, we stopped at the gas station. He went in to get God knows how many packs of cigarettes, and came back muttering about some girl who was in there. She was asking the person to help her with the gas pump because she was unsure of how to work it. Since it's self-serve, he said no and she walked out. I saw her walking out -- she looked pretty young. I'll bet she'd just gotten her lisence. But, because she had an expensive car, my dad insisted that she knew how to work it but was "a snobby little whore who just wanted someone to do it for her." I asked him why he would make that judgement so quickly, and he snapped back at me saying it was because she had a really expensive car. Um, huh? I'll bet she had just gotten the damn car and was just looking for a little help. Hell, when we were pulling out, I saw her poking at the pump with a puzzled look on her face. In all honesty, I'd probably be a little confused the first time I pumped gas into my car. He also hurts me. A lot. Whenever I get on his nerves he hits me. I have a high tolerance for pain, so it's not that that bothers me... it's the fact that the monster standing there hurting me is half the reason I'm here today that makes me burst into tears when I get slapped across the face or pinched or whatever it is that he does. The other thing that bothers me is that my mother knows that he hurts me. Whenever he does, she just turns around and ignores it so that he won't hurt her! Am I the only one that thinks that's wrong?! And when I tell her, she makes a quick comment like, "He's your father." and leaves it at that. Even if my dad is just touching my shoulder or something, he does it to show that he's stronger than me -- digging is fingers into my flesh so that it leaves a buise. When my dad isn't hurting me, he's touching me in a way that scares the shit outta me. It's nothing like when I was little (I can tell that he thinks I've forgotten about the "tickling"). If I'm lying down on my bed he'll sit down and put his hand on my butt or thigh. I don't dare slap his hand away (I did once by reflex, and he hit me. Hard). So I just move away from his hand. I do not want him touching me. Then he tries to make me feel bad by saying, "Oh, my own daughter doesn't love me. Do you know how upset that makes me? Someday I'm going to leave and you'll never see me again. Then you'll be upset." but you can tell it's just an act. Sometimes he puts his head down and tries to make me think he's crying, telling me that me and everyone in my mom's family hates him. When he's not trying to make me feel guilty, he deliberately tries to make me feel bad about myself. He's told me that nobody really loves me (yes, he's actually said that). He's told me that my mom sleeps around. He's told me that nobody cares about me. He tells me that nobody will ever care about me! And I'm actually starting to believe it. He even tells me that he wishes he had a different daughter; that I'm just a mistake. I saw him push my mother once, but apart from that I haven't seen him hurt her... although he must have, because it's pretty obvious that she's scared of him. Back to when I saw him push her: I was sick and couldn't sleep because I was so congested that I couldn't breathe and every muscle in my body was aching. My mom and dad sleep in the next room, so I called for my mom. I knew she was sleeping, and I didn't want to wake her up, but I also didn't want to spend the whole night tossing and turning. Instead, my dad woke up. He came running into my room looking furious and started yelling and cussing at me for waking him up. I apologized over and over through tears and he got even madder because I was crying. I told him I only wanted to ask my mom if there was something I could do to feel a bit better so that I too could sleep. He went into the kitchen and brought back these Cold & Sinus pills that don't work on me. Even my doctor confirmed that they have no effect on me whatsoever. I refused to take them because I remembered my doctor saying that I should ONLY take medications when I really need them, and I didn't want to swallow something for no reason. But of course, my doctor was wrong. I had to take the pills. Still I didn't take them. He yelled and screamed at me and told me it wasn't my choice, he said I had to so I had to. My mom came into my room at that moment and when she saw the pills he was trying to put in my mouth her jaw dropped and she half-yelled, "What the hell are you giving her?" At that, he turned around and pushed her away (she almost fell down). He just told her to say out of it. For once she was worried about me, so she went to her room and called 911. She didn't say anything, she just held the phone up so that they could hear my dad yelling. I ran to my cat's room (yeah, my cat has her own room... it's just a small room that used to be a guest room so when we got the cat we turned it into her room) and hugged her because I had thoughts of the animal getting so scared by my dad's yelling that she'd have a heart attack or something and die. At time time I didn't know that my mom had called the police, so when I heard heavy knocking at the door I got SO scared. I thought some creepy repo dude was there to take away our house or someone who would run in and shoot everyone once the door was opened. My dad angrily opened the door, ready to yell at whoever it was. When he saw the police walk into the house, he immediately calmed down and tried to make it look like my mom was causing the problem! At that point I was curled up in the corner of my cat's room with her in my arm and everything inside of me was shaking. I was so scared that my teeth were chattering and I couldn't focus on anything. The police calmed things down and I finally got to bed. I woke up early the next morning and checked on the cat to make sure he didn't kill her or something out of anger. Later, two women came to the house. One was talking to my parents, and the other took me to my room to talk to me. She asked me a few questions. One of which was, "Have you ever seen your father push or shove your mom?" I shook my head. I knew if I told her she'd tell my parents and I'd get taken away again. Figures, after they left, my dad demanded that I tell him everything I told the lady. "Nothing." was all I said. Oh yeah, I didn't mention when I was taken away. When I was around... seven I think, I was taken away and had to live in a foster home for two years. I was taken to an old lady's home in the country for the first little while. She was really nice... but she didn't talk to me much, she didn't let me go outside, and she didn't say goodnight to me. Then the school year started so I had to move in with a friend's family. It was better than that lady, but I still missed my home. I cried myself to sleep every single night and all I could think about was going home. When I finally did go home, my parents were temporarily seperated (not divorced), so I had to visit my father at his mother's house on certain days, which I hated. He always tried to make me dislike my mother. My dad has also been to jail once before. I have no idea what for, but I know it's related to my being taken away. My mom won't tell me, and my dad claims that my mom lied in court and it's all her fault and he never should've gone to jail. Now, my mom DOES lie, but I doubt all of it was a lie. I just hate my dad. Hate him. I don't want any physical touch with him. I refuse to hug him, even. It's just really uncomfortable. I don't want his hands on me. At all.Just a few minutes ago, before I started writing this, he got mad at me. You see, I take drumset lessons because I absolutely adore music and drumming is something that I love. My dad just randomly came up to me and said I need to properly practice. I told him that I do practice (my teacher told me that the most effective method of practice is to just tap to the beat when I'm listening to music -- which I've always done), but he said that I don't. "I drum because it's something I love to do. It's not WORK. I don't want it to be work, and it shouldn't be." and he told me that that was just bullshit and that it was a waste of money to get me lessons if it's not work. This REALLY got me upset because music is a huge part of my life and it is definitely NOT "work" to me. There's a lot more I could write, but I think I've written a good deal, so I'll leave it at that. Am I right to hate him, or is he right? What should I do?Please, I really need some advice. Dear Jamie: I'm sorry but I would like to challenge some of your Black male readers. I am a White female who is engaged to a Black male-good-looking, educated and loving. I just don't understand a lot of Black female's attitudes about our relationship. My man decided he wanted me because the pickings amongst Black women were slim to none. As he said they were either too fat, too loud, too mean, too argumentative, too needy, too materialistic or carrying too much excess baggage. Before I became engaged, whenever I went out I was constantly approached by Black men, willing to wine and dine me and give me the world. If Black women are so up in arms about us being with their men, why don't they look at themselves and make some changes. I am tired of the dirty looks I get and snide remarks when we're out in public. I would like to hear from some Black men about why we are so appealing and coveted by them. I graduated from one of the most prestigious universities in Atlanta , Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Management. I have a good job at a major corporation and have recently purchased a house. So, I consider myself to be among the ranks of successful black men. I will not use my precious time to slander white people. I just want to set the record straight of why black men date white women. Back in the day, one of the biggest reasons why black men dated white women was because they were considered easy. The black girls in my neighborhood were raised in the church. They were very strict about when they lost their virginity and who they lost it to. Because of our impatience to wait, brothers would look for someone who would give it up easy without too much hassle. So, they turned to the white girls. Nowadays, in my opinion, a lot of brothers date white women because they are docile and easy to control. A lot of black men, because of insecurities, fears, and overall weaknesses, have become intimidated by the strength of our black women. We are afraid that our woman will be more successful than us, make more money than us, drive nicer cars and own bigger houses. Because of this fear, many black men look for a more docile woman. Someone we can control. I have talked to numerous black men and they continuously comment on how easy it is to control and walk over their white women. I just want to set the record straight. I want A Disgusted White Girl to know that not all successful black men date white women. Brothers like Ahmad Rashad, Denzel Washington, Michael Jordan, Morris Chestnut, Will Smith, Blair Underwood, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Chris Rock all married strong black women And, to flip the script, there are numerous white men, in and out of the spot light, who openly or secretly desire black women over white women. It was black women who were breast feeding and raising your babies during slavery. I don't see why more firms don't try to set up offices in developing countries. I am not talking about BRIC. More along the lines of Central and South America, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and others. I'd think that there would be less competition for deals here. The offices could be run by mostly graduates of that nation's universities. Even so, laundromats are common in the USA, and they are very cheap compared to laundromats in Mexico. Laundromats are a luxury in Mexico, so they are more expensive. All of my machines are American, and they work with quarters. The machines work with 3 quarters, BUT the price of a machine it's clearly stated on the walls in HUGE BOLD letters; a machine costs 20 PESOS (1.53 US Dollars.) My laundromat is very close to the International Bridge, so a lot of American people come my laundromat. Whenever White people come, they look at the prices, they pay me, and I insert my quarters into the machines. It's a simple business transaction. Whenever Black people come here, they go straight to the machines, and insert their own quarters. I tell them they have to pay me 20 PESOS per machines, and I'm the one who inserts the quarters. Then they always start yelling telling me they are American, and that's the way it's done in the America. So I have to tell them they are not in the States, and that they need to pay what's stated on the walls. They always either: 1.- Pay me, and won't stop cursing the entire time. 2.- Get angry, start cursing, and storm out. 3.- Get angry, refuse to pay me, and force me to disconnect the machines, give them their quarters back, and ask them to leave. I've had this business for over 2 years. I've never EVER had this problem with White people. But it has become expected whenever a Black person comes by. Why does this happen? more

Over the past few years, I'd say since 8th grade things got really bad. Even before then, things were weird, like the day my house was searched for a fugitive or when my step dad had to leave for nine months on a "business" trip. Needless to say, my childhood was a mixture: a dead biological father, loving step father, overbearing mother that I always saw as perfect, and a sometimes nice ,but mostly selfish brother. Then, came middle school where I was sent to a new school. Sixth grade I was teased and harrassed, "gay" or "faggot" said directly to my face in attempts of intimidation at the lunch table. I found my ground and backbone, figthing words with words and made my place although, it was tough on the days I'd go home sobbing for my mom to let me change schools. With all the verbal gaybashing, I started having thoughts. I noticed guys when I should've been noticing girls and my family was mostly Jamaica homophobic(a place where gays are run out their neighborhoods and a father can stand by as a mob beats his supposedly gay son). Even at 8, my parents told me "If you or your brother ever end up gay, we'll kill you." It wasn't a threat I took seriously at the time because I had no idea what "gay" was ,but then came the internal battle. The guilt. I missed my father. I made it out of middle school scarred, still immensely optimistic and naive although without the belief that everyone in the world was "kind". High school came ,but not without my annual summer visit to Jamaica where my dead father's side of the family still lived. I love them soo much and I got closer to my cousin. First year came and went, drama with my close friend and soon she left the school in a cloud of smoke, the police questioning me in the office about what happened to her. Love" Second year of high school, I made true friends, swallowed and my overtaking fear and said those words, "I'm gay" to my first person. Today, I stand having told 15 people, only three of those family and everyone I've told has accepted and love me. But, there's still that aching hole in my heart. My mother hates gays, my brother only cares for himself and I have the best friends in the world. How do I hold onto my mother when she's so bent on being superior to me because she's my mother? My husband and I are both stressed out and tense because I am about to lose my job and we are trying to plan starting our own business to be self employed. The only way to do this is to have about $3000 extra dollars, which can only be acheived by selling our travel trailer, which he is attached to, or some other plan that he wants to come up with. I use to have a friend that I dearly loved to be around! We were really close, so I thought! We met when my daughter attended her mothers day care! I have to say it was the best day care ever as her Mom treated my daughter amazingly! So, lets call my friend Lynn...Lynn and I became friends! We started to hang out and we got along wonderfully! She was a very headstrong person! I was married at the time and my Ex husband was abusive in many ways! Yes, I agree I was blind and did not see the abuse! I loved him back then! She just disappeared out of my life! When I left my husband after the birth of my second child she reappeared in my life! Lynn and I were closer than before so I thought! I met my second husband Rob, and I never seen how she interfered in my life with her overpowering behavior! She could never understand that my kids came first! As she was single before! Then something else happened, we did not talk for a while! Yup, you guessed right she came back, about a year before she got married and I was in her wedding party! I also got her her photographer who was one of my husbands best friends! Now you have to understand....we live about an hour apart, my husband and I don't have anyone to babysit for us! So we ask ppl to come to our house....it is easier! Lynn never understood that, she did not like kids in her house! Well, where do you want me to put them, they are my life! Well, it came to the point where she started rumors about me, and broke the friendship that my husband had with his friend, Lynn's wedding photographer, so she could use her to her own advantage, she bad mouthed my business and really took over other friends! I also found out that she had my Ex living in her house at the time we split! I am a little confused! Now its again over 1 year and life is peaceful without her, but she hurt my feeling, but also my husbands by lying and cheating! Once she drove my husbands truck, put a huge dent in it, I took the blame for it! There is so many things....do you think I should write her a letter and tell her how much she hurt my family? I just feel hurt! more

Open Question: Which should I choose: Experienced Band or Drama? (10points!pleasehelp!)?

So, starting tomorrow, I have to choose my courses for high school next year. It will be my first high school year, and you cannot change the courses after you send them. I am having a difficult time choosing between experienced band or drama for my elective courses. I cannot take both, as I can only choose two and I am already going to take business studies for sure. I am quite a shy person, so that's why I'm not really leaning towards drama. Also, I don't think it would do much for the career paths I'm interested in. However, most of my friends are taking drama, and I find the activities fun. Being a shy person, I think experienced band would be a better choice for me, but I'm afraid that since it's "experienced" band, I will not be able to play the instruments as well as others. Although, I have a lot of experience playing guitar, piano, and clarinet, and would be able to play clarinet. The only thing I'm really scared about is that I'm not "experienced" enough. And I don't think beginner band would be right, seeming as that is for people who have never read notes or played an instrument before. PLEASE help me decide! Open Question: I forgot to got to work this Saturday, could I have AADD?

Hi, I am a 22 yr old man and I need to find out if I have AADD. Last Friday I had a graduation presentation, I was very surprised (but not happy or proud at all) because I ended up receiving 2 diplomas, one for graduating and two for "most professional". The day after the graduation I was feeling simply, miserable, like ****. I was having suicidal thoughts all day (depression swings have been happening for almost all my life). After the graduatuion on Friday I got to my apartment at 6 pm. Feeling indifferent and hopeless, I threw my clothes on the floor and went to bed. I usually prepare the alarm before going to sleep but this time it did not even cross my mind that I had work the nex day. I woke up at 8am on Saturday, took time to do other stuff. I was supposed to start work at 9am and work for 3 hrs only. The point is that I did not remember untill 4pm, too late to call in and explain anything to my supervisor since the business was already closed. I also have trouble focusing when in a conversation, sometimes i zoome out and loose it. I lack confidence too. Day dream too much. Feel anxious and desperate: to the point where I cannot function well, socially and academically. Been having mood swings to the point where I am extremely happy and all of a sudden I collapse, to the point where I go back to having suicidal thoughts and to experiment self hate. What could be wrong with me? more

Open Question: how is avatar anti-capitalistic and anti-religion?

capitalism is when you can start your own business/own property with realistically little government interference. this movie implied that it was immoral to go to another planet and force out and or exterminate a functioning civilization so a company can drill underneath the homeland of sed civilization to keep shareholders happy. that's just murder, not capitalism. how this is film anti-capitalistic? and if you think there's nothing immoral with that, that's another story. we'll have to watch a movie where an alien race come to earth and force us to move or die so they can drill for resources valuable to them for a profit. religion and spirituality is central for the na'vi people. they have a very spiritually culture. and it is protrayed that the eyway helped them through their darkest hour. how is this film anti-religion, like some movie critics have stated (see CNN)? or is it just anti-christianity because they are not worshipping jesus. in that case, it's amazing, b/c i haven't heard anything from the jews, hindus, and hell not even the muslims about it. more

Open Question: Any advice to get out of a mess on Quickbooks?

I have a 10 year old business, running on Quickbooks. Have always been up to date with invoicing, receiving payments and deposits. Have missed doing several years of entering my checks and therefore not much bank reconciliation done for the past 5 years. I know it's terrible, but that's just how things happened. I just can't spend the many hours it will need to catch up and enter in all of those checks and can't afford to hire someone to do that. I am now expanding and want to start things off fresh - carrying over my invoicing, but maybe cutting off the old cheques and adjusting the bank balance to reflect the current balance. Then I will start entering in my bills. checks etc properly and do the reconciliation. (I promise!) I don't want to start a new company because I do use previous years reports for comparisons and renewing sales of customers. The past history of sales is very important to me. Any suggestions for getting out of this mess? more
