Businesses ignoring telecom security threat
Many businesses are not paying enough attention to telecom-related security issues, according to research.Most believe they will not be hit by the type of fraud and instead concentrate on other areas like data security, the study by RedShift Research for Damovo found.The survey of 250 businesses found that 40 per cent had experienced telecom fraud.In businesses with 400 to 600 staff the figure grew to 53 per cent, and the increased roll-out of VoIP among companies is likely to make it go higher still.'About ten years ago, companies would have had a voice manager and an IT manager, now voice comes in as a function of IT,' said Damovo UK's Chris Richardson according to Maxwell Cooter of Techworld.'What happens is that the IT manager often doesn't fully understand the workings of the phone system so it gets ignored.'We found that 16 per cent of businesses with more than 1,000 users had been hit for losses of more than £50,000.'External attacks using phone networks can either be direct inward system access attacks or voice mail fraud.Damovo are to release a device to monitor in-bound and out-bound telecom traffic. more

The Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), with funding from BUSAC, is currently sensitizing Journalists across the country to bring to the fore problems holding back development of small-scale businesses in the country.
The programme is intended to increase the capacity of micro-businesses to generate national economic growth and thereby reduce poverty. more
