Minority and Private Businesses Rate Media Coverage: New Research

However, 83 percent of respondents said reporters must improve their understanding of business.

These findings are a part of new research on coverage of minority-owned and privately-held businesses from The Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism.

The research, which will be released Friday at the 2008 UNITY Convention in Chicago, is comprised of two studies, one based on 400 interviews with private and minority business owners and managers throughout the United States. The second takes a look at the journalist perspective through the survey of 125 U.S.-based business journalists.

"Private and minority-owned businesses play important roles in the community, but too often have been overlooked in coverage that focuses on big business," said Andrew Leckey, Director of the Reynolds Center. more

Voting Question: I chose the wrong major when I started college. I have the right major now. How do I start over?

I am currently at my fourth university. I have majored in two different fields (aviation & political science) and minored in three different fields (business, psychology, & philosophy). Originally I had passion in all of these subjects. The more I became specialized in each field the more I resented the field. I guess I just had romantic ideas about what could be accomplished with a chosen field of endeavor and then I was struck with the reality of how businesses and job markets are shaping my educational pursuit. Anyway, I have always been a talented musician, but up until last semester I never considered training to become a professional. The great thing is the more I become specialized in this field the more I truly grow to enjoy and respect the field. There is no doubt that this is where I belong, but it took me along time to get here and now I have $26,000 in student loans and just about 150 credit hours on my record. When I reach 150 credit hours I will no longer be able to recieve the pell grant or any other government grant for that matter (at least to my knowledge). The only debt I have to my name is student loans, I started investing money about a year ago and I have $4,000 in securities. That's basically my position. I have a passion but I don't have the means to pursue it. I have set goals, for instance, I would like to have my B.M. by 2015 and my Doctorate of Music by 2020. However, as I am writing out the plans to achieve these goals I just don't see how its possible with my financial situation. Maybe you'll have some good suggestions.... more

I have no money but have been painting for about 10 years. I have about a hundred paintings now. I have been researching this for a large portion of my adult life and have come to the conclusion it all started in the 1920’s with Yellow Journalism. Bear with me for a moment and let me explain,... William Randolph Hearst, who arrived on the scene in 1887, was already in control of the headlines on a day-to-day basis because of his efficient business practice within the industry. He was able to produce his Newspapers at next to nothing by manufacturing the tree pulp used and controlling the channel of production down to his papers, the San Francisco Examiner, and eventually the New York Journal (Which became a leading Newspaper). He teamed up with Henry Dupont to manufacture the ink used in the New York Journal and the partnership began to grow. ALONG CAME HEMP Hemp grows 4 times faster than the timber used for tree pulp by Hearst. Hemp grows annually and can be grown more times Hemp produces a better quality paper. Hemp can be grown in any region of the United States. Since Hemp grew so fast and it grew in every region, Hearst could not stop the middle class farmer from decentralizing the industry. Hearst knew that he could not provide the intellectual property to keep Hemp from destroying his industry and replacing it with middle class producers. In other words he was afraid of the free market. He was afraid of us… he had to stop it! Dupont and Hearst knew then that not many Americans understood the difference between Hemp and Cannabis. So they used it against the Americans by claiming Cannabis will make you rape and kill your sister if smoked, illustrating the dangers of inhaling by using grim reapers in their newspapers with joints. And people believed it! Time and Time again they would use this propaganda through the New York Journal, claiming that Mexicans bringing Marijuana across the border would sleep with White Wives and take White Jobs. They were also saying this about Black Americans who took up smoking and started the Jazz movement. Dupont’s banker was Andrew Mellon, Mellon bank of Pittsburgh (5th largest bank at the time). Andrew Mellon had a Nephew, Harry Anslinger. Andrew Mellon financially backed Anslinger and threw all of his weight into convincing the U.S. treasury that Marijuana is dangerous and it should be heavily regulated by way of taxation and prohibition. The treasury could use a program that would generate that much income for the government so in June of 1930 the treasury gave birth to the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. Ansligner hated Mexicans, Blacks, and Cannabis. He was on a mission to eliminate all of them. Immediately Ansliger waged war on Cannabis regurgitating claims made by Hearst in his Newspapers. (Success stories followed in the New York Journal). Then, in 1937 Anslinger approached congress with intent to fully regulate all Cannabis. The entire meeting was comprised of Ansliger making emotional outbursts and attempting to offer evidence, all of which was newspaper clippings out of Hearst’s Newspapers. With the exception of one congressman, all agreed and the act passed, Marijuana became criminal giving birth to the Drug War. Not to mention Hearst, Dupont, and Mellon were all filthy rich now and had their hands in official pockets. But the story doesn’t stop here. Andrew Mellon had to study the enemy, He saw what happened with Alcohol Prohibition and he knew it wouldn’t be long before the public caught on. Mr. Mellon then financed Pharmaceutical companies through government grants and private equity to try to create a synthetic substitute for the over 60 different medicinal properties Cannabis contains. (They have yet to accomplish this goal) If you look into the history you will find that fossil fuels would have never existed if it wasn’t for this intervention in the market place. CANNABIS CAN SUPPLY THE ENTIRE NATION WITH ENERGY ON ONLY 1% OF U.S. LAND. ALL CARBON CLEAN. (AND REMEMBER IT GROWS EVERYWHERE) This is where the Federal Reserve comes in. The Federal Reserve System does not want to see the decentralization of resources towards localism because if that were to happen the Fed would lose a stronghold on the liquidity pools it artificially creates. It would also mean they couldn’t use the Carbon Tax to consolidate wealth across the world. With Cannabis being legal and having over 25,000 uses there would be no way to compete against local and more sustainable banks. So, the Federal Reserve uses banks like the Mellon to fund the DEA and keep money flowing and keep marijuana illegal. The Fed knows that with Cannabis being legal our GDP would boom but not in favor of large monopolies like the FED, but quite the contrary. This is why I always say...the day we legalize it is the day we end the FED! Thank you for your answers in advance. more

I am starting a business where 50% of the gross revenues will be donated to a charity. The remaining revenues will be used for operational costs such as marketing and salaries. This is how I will be earning a living as well. I am not sure if this would be classified as a non-profit or if there is another classification I would need to use. (There must be enough to pay the base wage to all.) 2) Any sole proprietor, manager, or business owner would document what they would normally earn every 2 weeks and receive a public share of money close to that amount, unless it exceeds that cap of funds necessary to guarantee the enumerated rights above in the "Bottom Line Pagragraph". 3) Unions in all professions including teachers, doctors, attorneys, civil servants, accountants, any viable profession would have a preferred stock in the public money before distributions of salaries. Similar to high income earners. They would get secondary priority over high income earners and employers, but capped at the amount needed to pay base wages to all. 4) There would of course be a reserve of public money for all services required of a Government both to meet the needs of the "bottom line" and to provide any other basic government services that cannot be omitted to sustain soverignty. This would also be capped at the amount of the Bottom Line Paragraph. 5) There will be and unfortunately there will have to be humane reasonable actions taken against those who are not working when required to work, which could include confinement without pain and suffering (like white-collar jail), salary cuts, or seized possessions....there wouldn't be a way around this, BUTTTTT.... -------a. Every job will have sick days and vacations days -------b. On top of this, every night you leave work you will role dice, If you land a 12, your lack of work will be enforced the most heavily the subsequent day. If you role a 4 or less, your lack of working will hardly be enforced. You get some randomness from this. -------c. Voting Question: Whiche agencies handle the business grants for minorities and which ones give grants to the disabled?

I am frustrated: I tried to google this and all I ;came up with was sites that want to charge you---which I think is a scam. A friend of mine is disabled and of minority and she was pretty good so far at starting up a business. However, the financial hardship is there and so she asked me if I could research this after I mentioned grants to her. The problem is that the SBA doesn't give grants to small businesses, and trying to find out where she can apply for a grant is like trying to find a needle in the haystack. I know for fact that government programs do not charge to get access to their grants, but appearantly some scammers try to do just that. So I rather have the name of the approbiate agencies and I'll bring her case directly there. Anyone out there knowledgable enough to tell me where I can obtain grants for her-all I need is the proper name of the agency/istitution where an application can be submitted.
