Social Networking Can Be a Friend Indeed

A growing number of small-business owners are tapping into a vast array of social-networking tools to gain new customers, connect with their peers and share advice about common problems. A host of networks, blogs and forums for small-business owners have sprung up over the last year, with several small start-ups joining the ranks of established sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, MySpace and Friendster. Visitors use the sites to post questions and answers, make connections with distributors and suppliers, hunt for employees or show off their products for potential customers. VisaV recently launched a small-business network on Facebook, which now has more than 80,000 small businesses as members. Visa is offering $2 million in advertising credits for small-business owners who join. The credit-card company says it wants the network to become a "one-stop resource" that can "empower small business owners to expand their customer base, manage their business better and exchange ideas with other businesses and trusted advisers." Bank of AmericaBAC also launched a small-business online community last fall, which now has 16,000 registered users. more

Cindy's Creative Cakes has been in business over 20 years, and Cindy's most popular creations have always been wedding cakes. But it was a recent on-line wedding cake order from Oklahoma that got Cindy's attention.

"Of course, I thought why don't they get a bakery in Oklahoma to do this but, again I'm pretty well-known and they might have seen my work and that's what they wanted," Cindy told us.

But, the wedding cake wasn't all they wanted. The customer paid Cindy $2,200 with a credit card.

The money cleared the bank and then another e-mail came saying, "...that I need to send $700 to this shipping company in order for them to pick up this cake tomorrow...so it's like I don't think so," she laughed.

It turns out the customer's name didn't match the credit card. more

Illegal immigration problem isn't going to be solved over night and any solution that I have found has major flaws. Amnesty. - currently UCIS are overload with work, how would they be able to cope if 13 million new applications needed to be processed. - If illegal immigrants were granted amnesty what would stop more illegal immigrants crossing the boarder, would you need to grant amnesty every 20 years to increasing number of illegal immigrants. - How are we to know what the back ground is of all these illegal immigrants, what is to stop murders, rapists, etc gaining legal status and hence avoiding prosecution for their crimes. - Wouldn't all the illegal immigrants start using facilities the same as citizens, since they will be able to legally. I have been researching this for a large portion of my adult life and have come to the conclusion it all started in the 1920’s with Yellow Journalism. Bear with me for a moment and let me explain,... William Randolph Hearst, who arrived on the scene in 1887, was already in control of the headlines on a day-to-day basis because of his efficient business practice within the industry. He was able to produce his Newspapers at next to nothing by manufacturing the tree pulp used and controlling the channel of production down to his papers, the San Francisco Examiner, and eventually the New York Journal (Which became a leading Newspaper). He teamed up with Henry Dupont to manufacture the ink used in the New York Journal and the partnership began to grow. ALONG CAME HEMP Hemp grows 4 times faster than the timber used for tree pulp by Hearst. Hemp grows annually and can be grown more times Hemp produces a better quality paper. Hemp can be grown in any region of the United States. Since Hemp grew so fast and it grew in every region, Hearst could not stop the middle class farmer from decentralizing the industry. Hearst knew that he could not provide the intellectual property to keep Hemp from destroying his industry and replacing it with middle class producers. In other words he was afraid of the free market. He was afraid of us… he had to stop it! Dupont and Hearst knew then that not many Americans understood the difference between Hemp and Cannabis. So they used it against the Americans by claiming Cannabis will make you rape and kill your sister if smoked, illustrating the dangers of inhaling by using grim reapers in their newspapers with joints. And people believed it! Time and Time again they would use this propaganda through the New York Journal, claiming that Mexicans bringing Marijuana across the border would sleep with White Wives and take White Jobs. They were also saying this about Black Americans who took up smoking and started the Jazz movement. Dupont’s banker was Andrew Mellon, Mellon bank of Pittsburgh (5th largest bank at the time). Andrew Mellon had a Nephew, Harry Anslinger. Andrew Mellon financially backed Anslinger and threw all of his weight into convincing the U.S. treasury that Marijuana is dangerous and it should be heavily regulated by way of taxation and prohibition. The treasury could use a program that would generate that much income for the government so in June of 1930 the treasury gave birth to the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. Ansligner hated Mexicans, Blacks, and Cannabis. He was on a mission to eliminate all of them. Immediately Ansliger waged war on Cannabis regurgitating claims made by Hearst in his Newspapers. (Success stories followed in the New York Journal). Then, in 1937 Anslinger approached congress with intent to fully regulate all Cannabis. The entire meeting was comprised of Ansliger making emotional outbursts and attempting to offer evidence, all of which was newspaper clippings out of Hearst’s Newspapers. With the exception of one congressman, all agreed and the act passed, Marijuana became criminal giving birth to the Drug War. Not to mention Hearst, Dupont, and Mellon were all filthy rich now and had their hands in official pockets. But the story doesn’t stop here. Andrew Mellon had to study the enemy, He saw what happened with Alcohol Prohibition and he knew it wouldn’t be long before the public caught on. Mr. Mellon then financed Pharmaceutical companies through government grants and private equity to try to create a synthetic substitute for the over 60 different medicinal properties Cannabis contains. (They have yet to accomplish this goal) If you look into the history you will find that fossil fuels would have never existed if it wasn’t for this intervention in the market place. CANNABIS CAN SUPPLY THE ENTIRE NATION WITH ENERGY ON ONLY 1% OF U.S. LAND. ALL CARBON CLEAN. (AND REMEMBER IT GROWS EVERYWHERE) This is where the Federal Reserve comes in. The Federal Reserve System does not want to see the decentralization of resources towards localism because if that were to happen the Fed would lose a stronghold on the liquidity pools it artificially creates. It would also mean they couldn’t use the Carbon Tax to consolidate wealth across the world. With Cannabis being legal and having over 25,000 uses there would be no way to compete against local and more sustainable banks. So, the Federal Reserve uses banks like the Mellon to fund the DEA and keep money flowing and keep marijuana illegal. The Fed knows that with Cannabis being legal our GDP would boom but not in favor of large monopolies like the FED, but quite the contrary. I will have a professional business plan all written out but nothing to invest other than inventory that I have begun to collect. I am a young filmmaker and I am looking into starting a small company to make short and full length feature digital films. Although today, Digital is not the standard, with the new Red cameras everywhere Im convinced it will soon replace film (Not entirely of course, just mostly within the next few years). I know poverty, I know poverty very well. I grew up in the Over-the-Rhine area in Cincinnati, it's called the ghetto of ghetto's. We lived in a one room "apartment" if you could call it that with no heat or air. My "father" threw me on the streets when I was 16 years old and I called the back-seat on a 1970 Chevy Nova home for 3 years. I sprayed painted it red and I felt blessed to have it. I recall only once having legal licence plates on that car. I went to school everday and never missed. I worked at a Shell gas station where I pumped gas, fixed flats and did oil changes 60 hrs per week for $2.10 per hr and felt very lucky to have that job. I never knew a moment of being hungry, wet or cold. I provided everything I needed with my labors. I still remember starting my car at night to warm up, I would allow the motor to run for 20 minutes or so then turn it off...after all gas was .89 cents a gallon...lol! I put myself through Wright State U and got a business degree all on my own without grants or loans. It never once occured to me that I should ask for help or deserved helped. I was so ashmaed of my life during those years, I lived in constant fear that I would be discoved and arrested for living on my own. I started my own business! Today, some 30 years later I still run that same business with 12 full-time empoloyess and 4 part-time. I live in a beauitful 5 bdrm home with 4 baths. I have successfully rasied 4 wonderful children who have never known one single day that they wern't loved and cherish. I have the world's most wondeful wife that a man could ever ask for, I love this woman more than any words of mine could ever express in human language. Jessica Yates woke with the morning sun glaring in her eyes. The wind blew her white sheer linen drapes, and the birds chirped their little songs. Getting up out of bed, she glanced out to look upon the lovely spring view. Living in Tularosa, New Mexico is exceptionally enjoyable. Everyone knew everyone, and the town kept their roots close to their hearts. The Apache Indians, who founded the town in the late 1800‘s, built a ditch irrigation system, from the Rio Tularosa, that allowed them to farm throughout the bayou. This allowed Jess to look upon a stunning view with gardens in bloom and trees of almost every species you can think of. Jess found that the view encouraged her to go on her morning jog. After getting dressed in sweat pants and a tee shirt Jess did some stretches and started down the apartment stairs. The runs always woke her mind, and energized her body. Coming around the corner, she came upon the park her parents use to take her before the separation. Jess’s mind began to spin with memories of her childhood. In the beginning, her parents where happy, Angela and Robert Yates where the talk of the town. They were both successful people, and they created an happy family, while other families seemed to be breaking apart. Jess remembered that her dad would come in, and swing her mother around; Then he would give her a big kiss, and look at her with a love that seemed to be never dying. They would have weekly family outings to the nearby famous towns like, Ruidoso, New Mexico, or they would go to the bayou, on the south east of town. We could use $7,000,000,000 to become energy independent. We could use the money in a brand new energy bill. The new energy bill would help guide a process that would pay for research and design, update infrastructure, give subsidies to renewable energy companies subsidies to farmers, and small business grants for start-up green energy contractors and the companies who would manufacture the equipment necessary for conversion. Now im asking him to change his tone on the bailout bill and call for a new energy bill instead. Im right. Dont doubt it. The Question is.. are the people in Obama's inner circle capable of thinking freely or are they focused on bailing out their own "401k's" and other investments? Im gonna vote for Obama, because his core principles are the same as mine. His policies are for the most part innovative and progressive. Because of our credit addiction the dollar is inflated and the price of commodities has sky-rocketed. We need to become an ownership society again, not slowly progress into a bank dependent one. After almost 100 years of living off of a credit system which creates money out of thin air, our federal government and the federal reserve (which is no more federal than fed-ex) have proven that the credit system is flawed. Promoting ownership and reverting to the old monetary system which backed our money with gold bullion is the right way to run our country and is whats best for our people. Because of our flaws as a people. Because of our flaws as a country, this generation, the most selfish generation must step up and allow themselves to suffer. We may have to go head first into a depression, but just like the great depression we will come out a stronger, better country than we were before. Sacrifice by our forefathers is what made our country great. Whether you like it or not, whether you are able to admit it to yourself, you know as well as I do that this country has lost it's way. How will history remember us? Its time to stand up, stop whining, and start being Americans. If it calls for social uprising we must meet it. If it calls for revolution we must revolt. If it calls for sacrifice we must suffer. Sadly, I believe from the bottom of my heart, this will never happen. Our federal government has divided, manipulated, and bribed our people for too long. Among other things, he proposes: • Doling out faith-based grants "targeting ex-offenders." • Subsidizing supermarket chains that relocate to the inner city to deliver "fresh produce" to blacks, helping wean them off unhealthy fast food. • Imposing "goals and timetables for minority hiring" on large corporations whose work forces are deemed too white. • Continuing to fund the Community Development Block Grant program, Head Start and HUD public housing subsidies. • Funding Small Business Administration loans for minority businesses who train ex-felons, including gangbangers, for the "green jobs" of the future, such as installing extra insulation in homes. • Doubling the funding for federal after-school programs such as midnight basketball. • Subsidizing job training, day care, transportation for inner-city poor, as well as doubling the funding of the federal Jobs Access and Reverse Commute program. • Expanding the eligibility of the earned income tax credit to include more poor, and indexing it to inflation. • Adopting entire inner-city neighborhoods as wards of the federal government. • Spending billions on new inner-city employment programs, including prison-to-work programs. This is just a down payment on the "economic justice" Obama has promised the NAACP — financed by "tax laws that restore some balance to the distribution of the nation's wealth," he says in his book. And the indirect aid he's proposing now could quickly turn into cash transfers once Obama is safely ensconced in the White House. Claiming "blacks were forced into ghettos," Obama is certainly sympathetic to the idea of reparations. His church has actively petitioned for them for decades. And he's strongly suggested there's a legal case to be made for them. "So many of the disparities that exist in the African-American community today can be directly traced to inequalities passed on from an earlier generation that suffered under the brutal legacy of slavery and Jim Crow," he said. "We still haven't fixed them." He assumes the economic gap is a legacy of discrimination and largely unrelated to personal responsibility. He also makes it seem things haven't gotten better for blacks. In this, Obama is intellectually dishonest. In his book, he cites statistics showing a 70% rise over the past two decades in the number of "Latino families considered middle class," but never cites one stat showing the even more impressive gains of the black middle class. He complains about low black wages, but never mentions the quantum leap in black home-ownership rates. Why? Such stats would undermine his case for roundabout reparations. Even if it were true, he says, "better isn't good enough." "The problems of inner-city poverty arise from our failure to face up to an often tragic past," Obama said. Now it's payback time. more

Support Working Families Provide a "Making Work Pay" Tax Cut for America's Working Families: Obama will restore fairness to the tax code and provide 150 million workers the tax relief they need. Obama will create a new "Making Work Pay" tax credit of up to $500 per person, or $1,000 per working family. The "Making Work Pay" tax credit will completely eliminate income taxes for 10 million Americans. Raise the Minimum Wage to $9.50 an Hour by 2011: Barack Obama believes that people who work full time should not live in poverty. Before the Democrats took back Congress, the minimum wage had not changed in 10 years. Even though the minimum wage will rise to $9.50 an hour by 2011, the minimum wage's real purchasing power will still be below what it was in 1968. As president, Obama will further raise the minimum wage, index it to inflation and increase the Earned Income Tax Credit to make sure that full-time workers can earn a living wage that allows them to raise their families and pay for basic needs such as food, transportation, and housing -- things so many people take for granted. Expand the Earned Income Tax Credit: In both the Illinois State Senate and the U.S. Senate, Obama has championed efforts to expand the EITC, which is one of the most successful anti-poverty programs to date. As president, Obama will reward work by increasing the number of working parents eligible for EITC benefits, increasing the benefit available to parents who support their children through child support payments, and reducing the EITC marriage penalty which hurts low-income families. Under the Obama plan, full-time workers making minimum wage would get an EITC benefit up to $555, more than three times greater than the $175 benefit they get today. If the workers are responsibly supporting their children on child support, the Obama plan would give those workers a benefit of $1,110. Expand Paid Sick Days: Half of all private sector workers have no paid sick days and the problem is worse for employees in low-paying jobs, where less than a quarter receive any paid sick days. Barack Obama will require that employers provide seven paid sick days per year. Expand the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA): The FMLA covers only certain employees of employers with 50 or more employees. Barack Obama will expand the FMLA to cover businesses with 25 or more employees. Barack Obama will expand the FMLA to cover more purposes as well, including allowing workers to take leave for elder care needs; allowing parents up to 24 hours of leave each year to participate in their children's academic activities at school; allowing leave to be taken for purposes of caring for individuals who reside in their home for 6 months or more; and expanding FMLA to cover leave for employees to address domestic violence and sexual assault. Encourage States to Adopt Paid Leave: As president, Barack Obama will initiate a 50 state strategy to encourage all of the states to adopt paid-leave systems. Obama will provide a $1.5 billion fund to assist states with start-up costs and to help states offset the costs for employees and employers. Expand High-Quality Afterschool Opportunities: Barack Obama will double funding for the main federal support for afterschool programs, the 21st Century Learning Centers program, to serve one million more children. Obama will include measures to maximize performance and effectiveness across grantees nationwide. Expand the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit: The Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit provides too little relief to families that struggle to afford child care expenses. Barack Obama will reform the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit by making it refundable and allowing low-income families to receive up to a 50 percent credit for their child care expenses. Protect Against Caregiver Discrimination: Workers with family obligations often are discriminated against in the workplace. Barack Obama will commit the government to enforcing recently-enacted Equal Employment Opportunity Commission guidelines on caregiver discrimination. Expand Flexible Work Arrangements: Barack Obama will address this concern by creating a program to inform businesses about the benefits of flexible work schedules for productivity and establishing positive workplaces; helping businesses create flexible work opportunities; and increasing federal incentives for telecommuting. Obama will also make the federal government a model employer in terms of adopting flexible work schedules and permitting employees to petition to request flexible arrangements. Any and all help appreciated. Hello to all, I am a single father, raising my daughter on my own for several years since the passing of her mother. Of course I am no different than many others in this similar situation, “trying to make ends meet”. America is certainly the land of “opportunity, innovation and fresh ideas” and now amid a terrible economy to slug our way through, we are all now having to find the new trends, new directions and new beginnings. For some, with plenty of capitol under their belts, the times are not so bad. But, for the rest of us it is constant uneasiness and fear of whether things are going to get better soon or worse? I am tired of watching ordinary Americans, myself included, experience the economic highs and lows that make our lives so unstable and unpredictable! I for one have worked dam hard throughout my life only to watch someones relative or an incompetent boob advance on by me. Of course that is not true in all cases, but it is true enough to where we notice it. Don’t get me wrong, there are people with success that are deserving of the life they have built, but where I see flaws in our society today is the lack of true opportunities being given back to others that are deserving and have worked hard, so that in-turn those folks can give back to others. For so many of us ordinary, hardworking Americans who try to create better lives for ourselves we find the road blocks put up in our way by Corp Execs, Financial Institutions and Government. So you are probably saying “that’s true, but what’s your point”. Well, here it is… I have seen for years the most worthless people climb the “corporate ladder” while hard working people (like myself) slug my guts out and rarely get ahead or have anything long term or invested to show for it. It’s time for all of us out there who can relate to this to “have our cake and eat it too”! I respectfully ask all that read this and can relate or understand to help me in any way large or small. I am tired of working for others that just don’t “give back” to those that deserve it, really deserve it! So I am starting a movement of sorts which I am calling “true opportunities”. I am looking to start my own business and I need your help. I want to build a business to create independence for myself and in turn give back to others by creating jobs and opportunities to hard working Americans that usually don’t get “true opportunities”. I want to help real-hard working Americans find the success and security they deserve. NO! I am not trying to sell some “get rich quick” scheme or some elaborate scam. My vision is to create a multiple of businesses that true give opportunities to hard working people, without any prerequisites or conditions to meet. I know that one person can most likely NOT help everyone, but maybe my efforts and the example I will set will help others follow in my footsteps and create a chain reaction throughout the business world. I simply believe that there is not enough being done today, in our society, to offer true opportunities to good hardworking people. I believe business’ can and should afford to give back to its employees like they used to do, with insurance, promotions from within, continuing education, retirement. All these things are for sure, “investments into your employees”. Their happiness and security is essential for a great and productive work environment and the more a company invests into its employees, the more a business will grow. In my opinion, I feel the biggest problem with many companies today is that they do the opposite of what I have just stated and in effect handicap their own ability to grow! Resolved Question: What UK Government funds/help is there for starting a small business?

I have an idea for a business - I'd like to start up a bookshop selling new and antique books, trading online and in shop form. Unfortunately, years of living just below the poverty line have left me with a bad personal credit rating (CCJ, defaults etc). My partner and I are both employed but on very low wages (him minimum wage, me £7 an hour). We have no savings or assets to invest, family are unwilling/unable to help. and because of our credit rating, no high street bank would touch us with a barge pole. I live in an area of the UK with high unemployment and I've heard about renewal grants for such areas. Is there any help offered by the Government (ie not taking into account a bad credit history or lack of capital)? do they offer any help to people like us?
