Eaton: In the trenches in a glamor business

EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado Skiings known as a glamor business. But it also takes people who will cut trails and wrestle heavy equipment. Earl Eaton was one of those wrestlers.

Eatons impact went beyond giving Pete Seibert his first look at the Back Bowls. He was also one of the people who could look at a mountain and figure out where the trails would go.

When you look at the different players, Earls knowledge of the area and his technical skills really stand out, Colorado Ski Museum Curator Justin Henderson said. He could really get things done.

Max Dercum, one of the founders of the Arapaho Basin ski area, got to know Eaton when he and Pete Seibert were working at the nearby Loveland ski area. A U.S. Forest Service engineer himself, Dercum appreciated Eatons eye for terrain. more

Re-energising the nuclear industry

It will have the aim of providing the technologies and expertise to ensure the industry operates safely and cost effectively.

Ministers believe that the energy sector faces challenges in meeting the need for skilled workers in research and development, design, construction and operation of new nuclear power.

The NNL will be aligned with national policy on skills and will support and work alongside the newly created National Skills Academy for Nuclear (NSAN). The NNL's role will be vital in building nuclear scientific skills.

In nuclear research and development, personnel numbers declined dramatically from about 9,000 in 1980 to just 1,000 a few years ago.

Nexia Solutions, which the NNL will be based around, has already taken action to address the skills decline by working closely with the academic sector. more

Four in hospital after car and bus crash

A spokeswoman for Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) said two women in the car had to be freed from the wreckage by firefighters after the collision on Sherwood Road at Sherwood about 9.30am (AEST) today.

One woman was rushed to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition and the other was in a serious condition in hospital.

Ambulance officers treated six of the eight Brisbane City Council bus passengers at the scene, and two were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The bus driver's condition was unknown.

Sherwood Road was closed to traffic while investigations were underway.

Topcon Corporation's New Board of Directors

The following executives have been named as members of the Topcon Board of Directors effective following the shareholders' meeting in June.

Hitoshi Ito, president of Sokkia Co. Ltd., and advisor for Topcon Corporation; and Takayuki Ogawa, senior manager, Accounting and Financial Department, Toshiba Power Systems Company.

Current TV Sees Drop In Ad Revenue

Currently the network is carrying $41 million dollars in debt, up $5 million from the end of last year, and now the bad news of their advertising revenue makes the picture even bleaker. According to Joseph Weisenthal of PaidContent, their advertising revenue dropped from $2.64 million to $2.5 million for quarter-over-quarter, signaling the company may fall even deeper in to debt.

All of this information comes out as the company is looking into a potential IPO, so the timing couldn't be worse for them. While the stock offering might help them out with their debt, it doesn't seem likely people will rush to invest a company with slipping revenues.

We here at Mashable just hope the feature they did on Pete didn't factor into this!

Resolved Question: Some help needed urgently please (Nautical career)?

I'd be grateful for any serious help and advice here. I am about to graduate from University (UK) in the summer at the age of 21. I have worked part-time ever since I was old enough and have £20k saved up to put towards starting my own business (I'll have a further £5k by the time I graduate, so call it £25k overall). I know that my idea is nothing original but it is my dream and I want to give it a shot. I want to buy a trawler or similar working boat and convert it for use as a long-haul dive/ fishing charter boat; something with the capacity to take around 10 customers out in to blue, deep waters (eg not coastal) for maybe a week at a time to dive, fish, or do whatever they want to do with everything provided in the way of food and accomodation (basic and clean but comfortable- not fancy). I am undertaking various courses to make myself a more viable ship's captain. Is my plan feasible for a 21 year old gradute (providing I draw up an excellent plan)? Thanks!I would push for a working boat that has had sails added to provide more economical travel and then I can push the 'environmentally friendly' angle. I would winter in the Med so I could work year round rather than being restricted by UK winters. My parents have offered to help crew (mum cooking) so I could work well with 4 crew. What do I need to look at in more detail apart from costs, how do I attract investors' attention, and what'd make a good business plan? Thanks!Joanne, thanks for a good answer- I forgot to add that I will be working voluntarily on many 'working boats' to gain much-needed experience. more
