Aloha willing to sell business segments

HONOLULU (AP) _ Aloha Airlines is seeking a buyer for some or all of its major business segments. That includes its passenger service.

The state's second-oldest airline filed for Chapter Eleven bankruptcy protection Thursday.

Yesterday, a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge granted a series of motions.

They allow Aloha to continue operating in the near term, including making payments for fuel, utilities and employee wages and benefits.

Judge Lloyd King says U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Faris has recused himself from the case. Faris presided over Aloha's previous bankruptcy.

The airline emerged from bankruptcy protection in February 2006, just 14 months after filing under Chapter Eleven.

Mentor will dispense million-dollar motivation

Greg Reid got the nickname Millionaire Mentor from the teens he inspired at schools around San Diego where he gave talks and mentored kids for a decade.

The name stuck, and Reid used it as the title for one of his motivational books, "The Millionaire Mentor," which has been translated into nine languages.

Reid made his millions founding several companies, including an advertising firm called Work$mart, but the money is only a part of the story.

The San Diego resident sold Work$mart in 2004 to focus on helping others succeed.

Japanese business confidence hits four-year low

TOKYO - JAPANESE business confidence has slumped to the lowest level in more than four years as executives worry about a stronger yen, a weak US economy and high oil prices, a central bank survey showed on Tuesday.

Confidence among major manufacturers tumbled to 11 in March from 19 in December, according to the Bank of Japan's quarterly Tankan survey. Market forecasts, on average, had been for a figure of 12.

It was the second straight quarterly decline, pushing sentiment down to the worst level since the fourth quarter of 2003, according to the survey, which covers a total of more than 10,000 companies.

Major manufacturers predict a further deterioration in business conditions to a figure of seven in June.

The index represents the percentage of firms experiencing favourable business conditions minus the percentage of those seeing unfavourable conditions. more

Vijaya Bank on track with business target

MANGALORE: Vijaya Bank is on track to meet its expected business target of Rs. 100,000 crore by 2010 and may end up achieving it a year earlier, according to Chairman and Managing Director, Prakash P. Mallya. The bank as on Friday had achieved a total business of Rs. 78,600 crores, Mr. Mallya said and added, "It is my gut feeling that the bank will breach the Rs. 100,000 crore business target by March 2009."

Addressing media persons after inaugurating the bank's 1,047th branch at Bajpe, near here, on Saturday, Mr. Mallya said he was quite satisfied with the growth achieved by the bank. Bank's deposits have shown an increase of 25 per cent and advances 26 per cent. The bank started its deposit mobilisation drive early in December and this has yielded results.

"We will open our 1,051st branch at Sunkadakatte in Bangalore on Monday," he said. more
