First holiday memory?

Cadzand, a Dutch seaside resort near where my father was stationed in Rhinedalen. I was there from the age of about seven to 11. We used to go to sailing on the river Maas a lot. I remember drinking watered-down red wine and eating fried eggs and ham on buttered bread. It's also where I first heard the finger-in-the-dyke story.

Best holiday?

Going to Western Samoa 30 years ago. I met a Samoan girl in Sydney, and when I flew from there to Los Angeles and the plane stopped off en route in American Samoa, as they did in those days, I didn't get back on it again. She gave me her phone number, which was Samoa 65, so I rang her and she came to collect me. I met her father, who sat cross-legged with the men of the village in the fale (thatched houses) while the women prepared the food. more

(AFX UK Focus) 2008-03-27 21:56 GMT: Champion Enterprises to close 2 U.S. manufacturing facilities

SAN FRANCISCO (Thomson Financial) - Champion Enterprises Inc. said late Thursday it will close its manufacturing facility in Silverton, Ore., and idle the last of four plants at its complex in LaGrange, Ind., transferring the LaGrange production to the company's facilities in Topeka, Ind.

As a result, the Troy, Mich.-based maker of modular homes expects to incur pretax cash restructuring charges of $2.1 million in the first quarter ending March 29.

In addition, Champion said it is in the process of assessing the magnitude of the related pretax non-cash fixed asset impairment charges that it expects to record during the quarter, which could be as high as $7.5 million.

New rocket aims to offer Mach 2 thrill ride to the edge of space

BEVERLY HILLS, California (AP): Entrepreneurs of the new commercial space age plan by 2010 to be flight-testing a practical four-engine rocket ship that will be capable of taking people on Mach 2 thrill rides up to 200,000 feet (60,960 meters), and which also has the interest of the Air Force.

The design of the Lynx rocket, a two-seat ship a bit more slender than a small executive jet, was shown off Wednesday by Xcor Aerospace, a Mojave, California-based company that has spent nine years developing rocket engines.

Fueled by liquid oxygen and kerosene, the Lynx is intended to operate like an airliner, making up to four flights a day while using runways for takeoffs and landings like a normal airplane.

CEO Jeff Greason withheld specifics of costs and technical details at a Beverly Hilton press conference, but said he was certain investors will finance construction of the Lynx, which he estimated from this point forward will cost "south of $10 million (euro6 million)'' not including previous development costs. more

Texas will share in Osprey contract

Texas will share in a $10 billion contract for Bell Boeing Joint Project Office to manufacture 167 V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft, the Department of Defense announced Friday.

Half of the work will be done in Ridley Park, Pa. and the rest will be done in Amarillo and Fort Worth, the DOD said in its announcement.

The contract calls for delivery of 141 Marine versions of the helicopter and 26 Air Force versions by October 2014.

The V-22 Osprey takes off and lands like a helicopter but flies like an airplane. Some have been deployed to Iraq.

I am African American and I am a struggling college student who is unemployed. I have been actively been seeking work but to no avail. I served my country for 6 years as a reservist. Now that the company is near collapse, the Treasury offers you this deal. Even though you own $27 billion in GM bonds, you’d get 10% of the company. The UAW, which has a claim on $20 billion for its health-care and pensions obligations, would only have to sacrifice half of that to get 39%. The feds, who will invest another $9 billion to bring their total investment to the same level as your bonds, wants 51%. Huh? Meanwhile, however, bondholders pose a major stumbling block to the restructuring. Under the proposed offering which GM filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, investors holding $27.2 billion of GM bonds would swap those bonds for 10 percent of the equity shares of the restructured company. The United Auto Workers would get up to 39 percent of the company in return for half of the $20 billion GM owes to a health fund for retired workers. Current shareholders would get 1 percent of the new shares. The Treasury said that to meet restructuring goals and to fulfill bond covenants, the restructuring proposal must win the support of 90 percent of the bondholders, an uphill battle because bondholders and analysts said the union had received more favorable terms even though its legal claim in bankruptcy court would be equal to the bondholders’. Why would the Obama administration expect bondholders to contribute 42% of the solution in order to gain 10% of the company? Granted, GM wasn’t exactly the best-run business, but only a bureaucrat would take that kind of offer — or be arrogant enough to make that kind of offer. Small wonder the bondholders are balking at this proposal. They’d be better off in bankruptcy court, where their claims would get equal weight on a cost basis with the UAW and Treasury. This is not just mere mathematical incompetence, however. Obama and his team want to engineer a political bankruptcy and dismantling of GM in order to pick their own winners and losers. Granting the UAW almost 40% of the company on a 15% investment makes no sense outside of Obama’s need to keep unions on his side while GM commits to much-needed downsizing and brand consolidation. The Obama administration claims that the de facto nationalization of GM through their own claim on a majority stake in the company is an unhappy coincidence, but few are buying that explanation: “Government ownership is an unfortunate outcome of this, not a goal,” said one person familiar with Obama administration deliberations and who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to preserve his relationships with officials. He said the government “could have gotten nothing for something, or something for something” and that it insisted on a 50 percent stake to leave open the potential to recover some of the $18 billion the Treasury Department has already lent GM and the additional $9 billion that it would inject under the new plan. Sorry, this will be kind of long and complicated but here it goes: To start, let me please explain really quick: I am a HS Grad from another country, {US Citizen} and I had to go through a company called ECE to validate all my HS info before enrolling in this school. I ordered 2 sets of documents, one for school, one for myself, to have as well for the future. I received my copy, assumed school got theirs. I enrolled on an "Online Art School" {a certain Institute that is very well known, you might know what I mean now} in September 08. I got a mix of Grants and Loans to pay for this OH Very expensive school. Started classes, have been doing very well. These classes last 5.5 weeks, did my first "term" of classes {2 total}, all fine, did the second, everything well {1 class} when I went to log in for my next set of classes {2 of them} I was not able to. this was on a Friday, so, after a few calls to different departments, I found out on Monday that I was put on "hold" because they never received the documentation from ECE. I think to myself "Easy, just call them and have them send the documents" called them, had them send the papers to the school, I also faxed the papers to the office to expedite me being able to log into class. 5 days after school started, I'm finally able to log back in class. I find a mountain of homework and assignments to catch up with. I talk to my instructors, explain them the situation, they decide to work with me to catch up with my classes. I get an email, from someone I had never talked to on the school, telling me that I had to log in, post my assignments or I'd be dis enrolled. I reply back, explain the situation, and go about my business catching up with all these assignments {HUGE assignments by the way, required days of work, nothing easy at all} Oh, did I mention, this was on a Thursday, Friday I was trying to post. When I log in, the next day, to post my assignments, I see my classes have been deleted off my account. I call my student advisory, who tells me that I was dis enrolled because I never logged in {which, I did, to get the assignment info and introduce myself, by the way} but said not to worry, I could just re-enroll for the next 5.5 weeks coming up, and that should even it all out and that there was no problem. I believed her. I think to myself, oh good, then I'll have more time to make the assignments better, I already have the books and the materials, this is great, I need a break. Not quite the case. They sent me to collections. Now, I have a collections person from their own company, email me not 2 days later telling me I owed the school almost 5,000.00 I'm obviously confused, I ask for more info, he explains me that my student loans never got to pay them. I'm even MORE confused now, so, I call my bank, and they explain me that they did in fact pay them, a total of almost 6,000.00 ...SOOO, I'm thinking to myself, well, it's just a small accounting error, I decide to download all my financial info off the school website to go line by line and see where the mistake was done, I worked on billing for a very long time and have gotten good at this, wish I had paid attention earlier though! Anyways, I print it all out, and I see all the payments the bank gave them, I also see where they credited me for the classes I was dis-enrolled from ... the charges are because they refunded to the government ALL the grants they gave me originally. At this point, of course, I have lost all faith in this school. All this has happened in a matter of less than 2 weeks. And now they are requesting a "review" to ... well, I'm not even sure who, but they are making it sound like they're doing me a favor by asking "someone" up there to please forgive me from dis-enrolling and get me back in class... when all this was caused and started by them. So, my question is, do you think I have grounds for suing this school? If so, What would the term be? I just fail to see where and how this is my mistake, when I was never warned, told, explained that they were missing some paper that I had and just plain blocked me from class and then, before letting me resolve the issue, dis-enroll me for reasons that are based on nothing, as I had already worked something out with my teachers? Is this even legal? Is there any program anywhere that is not charging a single penny to try and get in that will actually pay you? I am a married man who is almost 37 with a wife and teenage boy who eats more than a horse ( I swear). I have failed miserably at starting up my own painting business (homes and so forth) Our finances are totally shot, the bills do not stop and garnishments have already begun, even though there is no money in the bank. On top of those bills the bank adds their overdraft and garnishment fees that I have to pay on top of the debts I already have. I am so frustrated with the online deals for government grants or surveys. They all tell you it is free to get in, yet every stinking time you go to sign up they ask for some $ either for shipping & handling or join an affiliate program where you have to buy something else from some other company. Well, the problem is, we do not have any $ in which to start from. The few survey programs I started over a year ago have never paid me one single penny so I stray away from those. I have paid for a grant thing once before just to be bombarded a month and a half later with extra charges from other companies that were associated with the initial sign up. I know poverty, I know poverty very well. I grew up in the Over-the-Rhine area in Cincinnati, it's called the ghetto of ghetto's. We lived in a one room "apartment" if you could call it that with no heat or air. My "father" threw me on the streets when I was 16 years old and I called the back-seat on a 1970 Chevy Nova home for 3 years. I sprayed painted it red and I felt blessed to have it. I recall only once having legal licence plates on that car. I went to school everday and never missed. I worked at a Shell gas station where I pumped gas, fixed flats and did oil changes 60 hrs per week for $2.10 per hr and felt very lucky to have that job. I never knew a moment of being hungry, wet or cold. I provided everything I needed with my labors. I still remember starting my car at night to warm up, I would allow the motor to run for 20 minutes or so then turn it off...after all gas was .89 cents a gallon...lol! I put myself through Wright State U and got a business degree all on my own without grants or loans. It never once occured to me that I should ask for help or deserved helped. I was so ashmaed of my life during those years, I lived in constant fear that I would be discoved and arrested for living on my own. I started my own business! Today, some 30 years later I still run that same business with 12 full-time empoloyess and 4 part-time. I live in a beauitful 5 bdrm home with 4 baths. I have successfully rasied 4 wonderful children who have never known one single day that they wern't loved and cherish. I have the world's most wondeful wife that a man could ever ask for, I love this woman more than any words of mine could ever express in human language. I have never allowed my minority status to cripple me...I was too busy working, loving and living! Yesterday, I watch a woman on TV asking for the government to pay for her mortage & bills, she resided in a 300k home and couldn't understand why she couldn't afford it, after all she worked 40 hrs per week. I wanted so badly to tell her why ....she never owned a 1970 Nova! Resolved Question: I'm starting a new web based business. Where and how do I get a piece of the small business stimulus money?

President Obama said that he will have money available for people who own or want to start a small business. I have a revolutionary web based matchmaking business that even during tough times like these should make a lot of money and could be as huge as eBay or Google in a couple of short years. I just need a decent sized government grant(s) and/or a small business loan package to get it all started; but grants would be better than loans. Where do you go to get this small business government stimulus money Barack Obama is talking about? I just don't have any credit history and because of the economy I have no job at the present time (was laid off back in August '08) and because I live in a small remote podunk town in southern Minnesota no jobs are available within 200 miles where I live. Around here you have to make your own opportunities. I am looking at creating much of the website myself by learning HTML but will be also seeking investors as well as web professionals that would be willing to help along the way in exchange for a percentage stake in the company. 'Stimulus' are available for small 'mom n' pop' businesses there truly the backbone of our nation... bailout the semi companies so they can stop paying people 49 cents a mile! I am thinking of starting a business that remotely and locally manages computer systems at businesses, as well as monitoring/creating their web presence. I know, at 15, as long as I have a worker's permit from the government (which I'm not sure if I need as being self-employed), I can start the company. My questions are: 1. Are there grants for start-up money like there are for minorities? 2. What is the minimum amount I have to make in order to file taxes? Do I have to file taxes until I'm 18? 3. Jessica Yates woke with the morning sun glaring in her eyes. The wind blew her white sheer linen drapes, and the birds chirped their little songs. Getting up out of bed, she glanced out to look upon the lovely spring view. Living in Tularosa, New Mexico is exceptionally enjoyable. Everyone knew everyone, and the town kept their roots close to their hearts. The Apache Indians, who founded the town in the late 1800‘s, built a ditch irrigation system, from the Rio Tularosa, that allowed them to farm throughout the bayou. This allowed Jess to look upon a stunning view with gardens in bloom and trees of almost every species you can think of. Jess found that the view encouraged her to go on her morning jog. After getting dressed in sweat pants and a tee shirt Jess did some stretches and started down the apartment stairs. The runs always woke her mind, and energized her body. Coming around the corner, she came upon the park her parents use to take her before the separation. Jess’s mind began to spin with memories of her childhood. In the beginning, her parents where happy, Angela and Robert Yates where the talk of the town. They were both successful people, and they created an happy family, while other families seemed to be breaking apart. Jess remembered that her dad would come in, and swing her mother around; Then he would give her a big kiss, and look at her with a love that seemed to be never dying. They would have weekly family outings to the nearby famous towns like, Ruidoso, New Mexico, or they would go to the bayou, on the south east of town. There they would go to the White Sands National Monument and slide down the huge sand dunes, created by sands washed down from the mountains. Eventually everything faded out, and her parents seemed to change. The look of love in her dad’s eyes faded more and more as the days went by. One day when Jess came home from school, her dad had all his bags packed at the door. Her mother sat on the couch crying and mumbling, “Why her, how could something like this happen to us.” Jess ran to her dad and latched on to his leg, “Don’t go dad, why you leaving?” tears in her eyes and trying to understand the situation, Jess looked up at her father. He bent down and kissed her on the top of her head, “Baby, this is the only way we can be happy again, sorry I just can’t be here anymore.” Pushing his daughter off of him he walked out. That was the last time Jess saw her father. He sent cards for special occasions, but never made an appearance. Jess, only 8 years old, had to learn to take care of herself. Her mother spiraled into a deep depression, which led her to drink, and pop pills to ease the pain. At school Jess only had one person to call a friend, Natalie. Jess let Natalie become her rock during desperate times. As The years passed by, they formed a tight relationship. Upon graduating High School they got a job at McDonalds. Ready to be on her own, Jess decided to get an apartment with Natalie. It wasn’t long that Jess wanted something bigger than McDonalds. Putting a plan together, with Natalie, for a business, they began advancing their futures. When they finished the business proposal and government paperwork for a grant, they became owners of the only bookstore in Tularosa. Now Natalie and herself were taking their very first vacation. Natalie went with her parents to Hawaii, while Jess stayed at home by herself. The vacation was coming to an end, and Natalie was due to be back sometime today. She didn’t notice that she stopped jogging, or that there was a man who watched her intensively. He was captivated by her beauty, and the emotions that radiated off of her as she stood there in a dazed like position. He kept watching her as she seemed to come back to reality, and start running again. Finishing up she did more stretches, and embraced the air conditioner when she stood in her apartment. Her vacation was anything but fun. Although it was a small town Natalie was Jess’ only friend. Consequently her vacation was full of movie marathons and house cleaning. Anticipating the moment when Natalie would be home, Jess decided to take a shower to pass up the time. When she finished up, she looked at herself in the mirror while blow drying her hair. It took her forever to grow her auburn hair to the mid back, and she was planning on growing it a few more inches before cutting it. Her face was a thin oval shape with wide, round chestnut eyes, and a mouth that seemed to complement the rest of her face. Putting on her clothes she thought about how the doctor told her during her last visit, “You need to start gaining weight before the wind blows to hard, and carries you away. There is too much stress in your life, and if you don’t slow down your going to die at the age of 50.” I know the doctor is right, she thought, but there is no way I can slow down.
