FM Kalfin: Bulgaria Has Rather Active Business Contacts with Kosovo

The business contacts between Bulgaria and the newly independent Republic of Kosovo are increasingly active. This was announced Saturday by the Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin before the Bulgarian private Darik Radio. Kalfin said the economic cooperation between the two states must be developed further. In his words, there are already a large number of Bulgarian businessmen doing business in Kosovo, and respectively, many Kosovar entrepreneurs working with Bulgarian firms. "The Bulgarians Kosovo are dealing mainly with trade, but there are also certain investment opportunities. As far as I know, the Bulgarian businesses are interested in these, and there is also a desire on part of Kosovo to attract Bulgarian investments," Kalfin said. He supported his claim about the dynamic development of the Bulgaria-Kosovo business relations by reminding of the recent visit to Kosovo of the Deputy Economy and Energy Minister Yavor Kuyumdzhiev, who was accompanied by a number of Bulgarian businessmen. more

Nebraska Entrepreneurs Heat Up in a Cool Economic Market

While the nation's job market cools, some of Nebraska's top entrepreneurs may be heating up. The entrepreneur's story, revealed in groundbreaking research and surveys done for a new book, reveals a journey of great risk -- but potentially great reward.

Entrepreneurship in Nebraska: Conditions, Attitudes, and Actions by Eric C. Thompson and William B. Walstad (Gallup Press; March 2008; paperback) examines the vital role of entrepreneurship in the Nebraska economy. The authors, both leading UNL Economics professors, present surprising findings from extensive Gallup surveys on the attitudes of both small-business owners and the general public on subjects ranging from starting a business, entrepreneurship education, economic development, business transition, and succession planning.

The book illuminates the entrepreneurial conditions and attitudes among the different regions in Nebraska and finds the climate ripe for entrepreneurship statewide and not just in the Metro areas. more

Syracuse ranks 59th on Fortune's list of best places to live and start a business

Syracuse, NY -- Syracuse has made Fortune Small Business magazine's list of the top places in the nation to live and launch a business.

The city was No. 59 among the magazine's top 100 picks for "the perfect place to build your dream." Fortune said it based its picks on the best mix of business advantages and lifestyle appeal.

The story (link to it here) cited the presence of many colleges and universities in and around Syracuse as one of the city's big advantages for those wanting to start a business.

"Syracuse's strongest industries include pharmaceuticals and renewable energy, thanks in part to the State University of New York's Upstate Medical University and College for Environmental Science and Forestry," it said. "With SUNY right there and prestigious colleges and universities such as Cornell within an hour's drive, Syracuse entrepreneurs can tap into a pool of young talent."

The magazine also called Syracuse a mature city "with an opera, a symphony and a Museum of Science and Technology as well as an annual international film festival."

"It gets a lot of snow, but for those who like to be outdoors, the nearby Oneida Lake offers scenery, fishing and water sports in the summer," it said. more

Small Business Retail Software Questions asked

Voting Question: My chance to turn small Business into Big!?

ok, I'll try to explain in short words: My family comes from Brazil My dad has a small business for over25 years. Business: Rent and sell snooker tables, ping pongs and football(soccer) tables My dad got started really young, in 1983. By that time, his business was much better, he used to have lots of revenues sources. The main revenue source came from Bars! if you had over 50 snooker tables, it was already something. Now the business is about to fail. The bars are doind badly. But theres a new hope: Retail and personal clients. We dont have many competitors, Only average ones. Nothing special. My dad has no skills to deal with the business anymore. I'm 22, studying business and administration. I work as a broker. I thought about taking the business from my dad for 70k, and he would have the right for future cash incoming. I thought about a business plan, investing 50k in an office rent, sellers, software and a small inventory. I thought about getting a partnership to help. we would add more to our services and products. Events, eletronic games, 1 day rent tables, poker boards, cigars, everything related to playing! Question: am I dreaming too high??? more

Voting Question: small business class financial questions.easy.?

1. Starting your business. You are opening a retail shop on January 1. You are going to need to borrow money from your 401k account to open the new shop and you need to figure out how much money to borrow. Calculate that total given: a. You expect to make $20,000 in gross revenues a month and pay for that inventory in the same month. (i.e., Costs recognized when product is sold) b. Your cost of goods sold is about 85% of total revenue c. The initial inventory for the store costs about $12,000. d. The initial capital goods (POS system, inventory software, business license) costs about $6,000. Q1. What are your businessʼs start-up costs? e. You need to buy initial inventory and pay back your 401k at 8% by December. (So, you need to have recoupʼed your investment by December and paid back the interest). Q2. What is your businessʼs gross profit margin? Q3. Allocate the costs of the initial equipment and loan over the first year, what is the businessʼs net profit margin? more

Resolved Question: What is the best language translation software available?

I was wondering what language translating software is used widely amongst small or large businesses and such. Again, this is retail software and not free stuff like Babbelfish and Google translate as they tend to translate word for word. more

Voting Question: How do you sell your store's items online?

I manage a small dance-wear retail store, and we've been trying to figure out how to create an online store to supplement our regular sales. We have a website that is maintained by another company that I do not have access to editing or maintaining. I do have the ability to maintain a website, however, and I would specifically prefer to have the ability to maintain our online store for inventory and customer service purposes. Have you ever created an online store for your own business? Do you have experience working with any software, programs or hosting sites that create good online stores that you can recommend? We use Quick Books Point of Sale software, and I'm curious to know if there's any way to integrate that inventory system with the inventory system of our online store. Do you have any knowledge of Quick Books having an online store software system? Do you have any good or bad experiences with it? We have a business paypal account from a brief period of trying to sell items on eBay, which we gave up on for several reasons. Our financial resources are fairly limited, and my time is extremely valuable and limited as well, so slightly lower-cost options that would ideally take less than a month of set-up time would be ideal. However, I'm open to any suggestions and insight that anyone has! Thank you! more

Resolved Question: Tough one here, XP install related - need true guru.?

I have a machine that will not allow me to install windows xp. As a background, i have multiple microsoft MCP certs, i have done thousands of OS installs using every microsoft product from windows 3.11 through vista premium 64bit. I was using this as a second home PC, used mainly in the bedroom to watch DVDs and access the internet or play games if someone else is on our primary PC. XP home was installed and running fine until I upgraded the CPU from celeronD 2.66Ghz (single core) to P4 2.8Ghz HT (xp and vista see this as a dual-core cpu). I started getting random shut-downs. No warning, no BSOD, just reboots. I made sure BIOS was configured to enable HT. That didn't help. Using monitoring software, CPU temps were at the lower end of the normal range as I have a great cooling setup in this case. I try to get this CPU above 54C (well within P4 operating temps) and can't no matter how many apps/games I try to run at one time. I then figured it was the single core HAL needing to be changed to the dual core/hyperthreading HAL. No problem. Instead of simply trying to update or copy and replace the existing file, I decided to do a clean install. Using the same OS install CD-ROM, a retail upgrade version of XP Home, I run setup and format the C: Drive. Everything is going fine until I try to copy files. Certain files (approx 30 in all) won't copy no matter what I do. I thought maybe my disk had small scratches, but I took it to MMX and they cleaned it and it is better looking than many 'new' cd's or dvd's I have seen. I try install again and the same 30 files won't copy correctly. Ok, maybe it's just a bad disk. Lets try a little trick. I allow it to install to 100% (obviously, less the files that wouldn't copy). Windows setup has to quit in the GUI portion because Shell32 didn't copy correctly. Well, maybe since setup is trying to run, we can repair the install. I took out another XP install DVD (this time) and attempted to repair my current installation. Everything fine until it trys to copy certain files. IT'S THE SAME FILES THAT WON'T COPY. I'm not guessing, I had made a list of the files that wouldn't copy off of the CD and it matched exactly with the files that wouldn't copy using the DVD. This can't be a problem with a bad CD-Rom or DVD-Rom. I even tried switching out the DVD burner for a CD-RW drive instead. It's definately not a media or drive issue. I have run memtest with both 1 and 2 sticks present and get no errors. I have tried disabling HT'ing in the bios and still get the same results. Any true PC Guru's out there that have successfully dealt with this problem. I have seen others post questions regarding problems with XP refusing to copy files, but the answers given were usually clean the disk, get a new OS cd-rom, check BIOS, check RAM, etc... the things that I have already done. I am in a somewhat unique position due to the fact that I have licensed copies of Win95, Win98, Win2k (all versions including server and advanced server), XP home, XP media center, Vista 32 HB (also gets disk copy errors when i try to install on this PC), Vista Business premium, and Vista Home Premium 64. My MOBO shipped from the factory listing the CPU that I upgraded to as supported. I am at wit's end here.hdd was fine before the cpu upgrade. never had problem with crashes or memory/paging errors, etc... added note, i realize that my new cpu uses slightly more power than the old one, but my MOBO calls for 350watt power supply for a fully loaded system i am using a thermaltake 480watt power supply with 2 fans, one of which the speed is controlled externally by a knob that sits on a pci slot insert (although not designed for huge powerhungry GPU's, it's a killer power supply. my 1.5v 6600GT never caused problems before and PS had power to spare). again, never had any problems with this PC, not one using exactly the same sticks of RAM, same GPU, same HDD, everything exactly the same except the CPU. I am going to try and pull the battery to reset cmos settings and let it autodetect all, even though i don't think that will help anything. maybe stupid mcafee put something on to prevent a virus hijacking a HDD. if so, it still allows you to fdisk it and format it, just not reinstalloh, and can't flash bios as can't get OS to load. most newer bios are software based and run from windows application. more

Voting Question: Is there a good software out there for creating cards, ie...referral, loyalty, punch, appointment time etc...?

I'm the manager of a small retail business and we're trying to come up with new ways to help bring in more business. I've found software for business cards but they don't say what other options they have with it. I'm looking more for a software to create and print other types of cards that are the same size like punch cards (buy 9 and get your 10th free!), referral cards, appointment cards and other "marketing" type cards. If you know of a software that has templates for this type of stuff please let me know. Thanks! :-) more

Resolved Question: Can anyone recommend a good Point of Sale inventory management system?

I am in the process of setting up a small retail business in my city and am looking for the right POS inventory management system. I'm looking for something that can handle the basic functions of sales and inventory management. It's a small store, so I do not need anything fancy. I have a very specific idea of what I need this system to do. Is there some place online that evaluates various POS systems and offers a listing of features and price. I'd like to get an idea of 3 or 4 I may be interested in before I start dealing with the salesmen from each company. Also, if anyone can recommend a specific company or system that has worked for them, please let me know. And lastly, if the software will work on a Mac, that's a plus. Thanks. more

Voting Question: Getting started on small business idea...?

I've owned a software company in the past that didn't require any startup capital, just time and hard work. Now however I want to start a business that will require leasing space and retro-fitting that space to accomodate the business activities (like a restaurant would do, except it's not a restaurant). My problem is I have no idea how to get started with a business plan given so many variables: 1. Type of commercial real-estate to lease? I think I have a good idea on this, I won't need typical retail space but it needs to be several 1000 sq ft so I am thinking something 'wherehouse-like'. 2. Do landlords let you alter the interior i.e. build out interior? 3. What are pitfalls for commercial leases and finding agents? 4. Are there special people that scout locations? 5. What is the best way to go about finding contractors to build out interior? 6. Once I determine costs for 1-5, what is the least risky way of raising capital for such a venture? Thanks all! more

Resolved Question: Quick Books Or Peach Tree?

I do bookkeeping for a small retail business. So I have been using QB 2005 basic for about 2 1/2 years now. BTW, when I first got it, I has a question and the CSR was more interested in upgrading me than answering my question. I just spent $200 on the version I had. So now I'm considering saying bye bye to QB for their excessive greed and using Peach Tree. (their CSR said QB transfers to their software.) But is it really just as good, or better? more

Resolved Question: What is the best inventory control software on the market for small business?

I have a retail business and inventory is found in a separate distant location. I am really in need of a great program to help me manage my inventory and one that functions with a portable data terminal. I have over 2,000 different items in inventory. I need to buy a software that work really well since I live in Africa and will not have the possibility of returning the product in case of a problem. Thank you very much for suggestions. more

Resolved Question: Non Genuine Microsoft Product Installed Acer Direct (Laptops Direct)?

I was sold an Acer Aspire 5920 machine by Laptops Direct and asked for them to put Office Small Business 2007 OEM version on the machine. When I found out I couldn't download a Microsoft Word template because I had a Non-Genuine product, I got a little concerned. Every application (WORD, Excel, PowerPoint, etc) displays "non-commercial use", which according to Microsoft: In the Microsoft Software License Terms, the "non-commercial use" text identifies the use of the product. You may install one licensed copy of the software on three devices in your household. The software is not licensed for any commercial business activities, nonprofit business activities, or revenue-generating business activities. Microsoft themselves told me that the Product Id for the version of Microsoft Office on my machine is a retail one and doesn't match the product key. The company does not answer my emails and I can't get any sense out of their customer support "team". What should I do? more

Resolved Question: Point of Sale systems easy to use and cheap?

I have been exploring several options for point of sale systems. I am opening up a seasonal store so it doesn't have to be the best possible system although I would like to have the basics like a barcode scanner, credit card reader, and thermal printer. I already have my own computer and monitor. It seems you can't find anything for less that $1500 like Quick Books retail point of sale software. I am not found of quickbooks to begin with. I recently visited a store that used Microsoft Excel along with bluetooth barcode scanners and epson thermal printers. Im wondering if this is something anyone could do or if this sort of thing was done by a computer programmer. I just can't imagine every retail business investing several thousand dollars in there point of sale (checkout) software and hardware systems in order to conduct daily business. Resolved Question: Discuss the markets that these vendors are targeting.?

Big-name business applications vendors—Microsoft, Oracle, Lawson and (on the business intelligence front) Cognos each made a splash with new software announcements at the National Retail Federation's Big Show event in New York on Jan. 16. The bevy of new offerings could help businesses in the retail sector move forward with electronic initiatives. Microsoft, for example, announced the 2.0 version of its Dynamics POS (Point of Sale) suite of software aimed at making it easier for retailers to extend their storefront online with such functionality as online invoicing and the ability to link to PayPal and eBay marketplace selling. POS 2.0 also offers roles-based design and integrates with Microsoft Office Accounting Professional 2007 software. For smaller retailers—and in conjunction with First Data and HP—Microsoft also announced an out-of-the-box POS and payment suite that is designed to replace a cash register and dial-up connection to the Internet with a PC-based POS sys more
