Marketing curbs

Costs will be reviewed by drug companies, as they face the impact of the increase in the forthcoming quarter, observes Mr D.G. Shah of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance. Promotional expenditure, travel for marketing purposes etc will get reined in, say drug company representatives.

On the manufacturing front, companies are reasonably lean, observes PwC's Mr Shetty. When companies look to review their prices, they will look at marketing expenses. Some companies have spread-out marketing operations and that can be expensive for the company, with scope to consolidate, he observed.

"Yesterday's business models will not work today and today's will not work tomorrow," says Wyeth's Managing Director, Mr Ranga Iyer. Companies will need a relook at processes, productivity and the yield coming from them. more

Summer holidays needn't Costa lot

Get credit card purchases charged in local currency, rather than sterling.

Go to restaurants and bars away from the tourist areas.

Buy soft drinks and ice creams in supermarkets, rather than restaurants.

Don't buy duty-free at the airport. Prices in the resort can work out cheaper.

HAVEN'T BOOKED YET?

Don't leave it too late. Capacity's been cut by major operators, so there won't be the glut of bargains.

Think about all-inclusive.

Look outside of Euroland to places like Egypt. The basic holiday cost may be more expensive, but with cheaper prices in resorts you're still quids in.

For Europe it may be cheaper to book a package - prices were set 18 months ago. But even if you've booked, you could face surcharges.

Morgan Lucas Stepping It Up For Topeka

Among spectators, there's not a bad seat in the house with excellent viewing all the way around. It's very proud for me to represent the track and have Lucas Oil Speedway on my race car as more people discover the 'Diamond of the Dirt Tracks' in Wheatland, Mo."

When Lucas gets down to business on Friday at Heartland Park Topeka, his purpose will be piloting his Top Fuel dragster into the highly competitive field and he knows it won't be an easy task.

"We definitely need to turn it around," said an anticipating Lucas. "Things will get better; it will just take some time. In certain areas we're making progress, but this is a tricky race track in terms of what the weather will do. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad. If it's hot out, it will become greasy, but that can change from hour-to-hour, so you have to be ready for all of it. You have to bring your 'A' game to the table for sure. I prefer a hot track as we've able to do a good job of getting down those kinds of quarter-miles."

Lucas is 47 points out of the coveted POWERade Top 10 and with only 10 races remaining before the Countdown to the Championship starts; Lucas has his eye on the prize of running for the Top Fuel title. more

Did Anybody Notice Starbucks Covered Up its Nips?

Advertising Age has Before and After images of the redesign. It also said one of Starbucks' current PR problems is the "widespread misperception" that the logo swap is permanent.

It's not. The throwback logo cups cease circulation in a few weeks, although why Starbucks thought they should stick around this long is anybody's guess. Considering the logo is much older than Pike Place Roast, it was downright irresponsible to assume people would automatically associate one with the other.

Because there is nothing on those cups to suggest the old logo is a temporary promotion for Pike Place. When it disappears again, most people will probably think Starbucks tried and failed to reposition itself. They won't even remember the "Pike Place" factor.

This is not the first time Starbucks has done something eye-catching with its brand but neglected to explain the whole story to consumers. more

Resolved Question: What should I add to my info...constantine I(long...but desperate...plus you can skim most of it)?

I have a powerpoint....what major info am i missing??? You can briefly skimm what I have...you don't have to read it all...but please help i have the title page then some info on who he is.... Constantine's original name was Flavius Valerius Constantinus, also known as Constantine the Great or Saint Constantine. He was an emperor and a military leader Constantine was famous for being the first Roman Emperor to profess Christianity. Constantine's support of religion helped transform it into the institution were it’d remain throughout the Middle Ages. then i said - Constantine raised with Christianity (which was NOT legal) to the status of a "permitted religion." He took a direct interest in matters of doctrine, setting a precedent for future emperors, and called the first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church (at Nicaea). He built churches after the pattern of Roman temples and public buildings. He also returned to the Christians the property they’d lost during the persecutions of his predecessors, and promoted and favored Christians in government jobs. His sponsorship of the religion made it suddenly advantageous to be a Christian. then i briefly explained why constantine is 'great' - ‘The Great' is a title given to Constantine I by the Roman Catholic Church in recognition of his role in establishing Christianity as the dominant religion in the Roman empire, the basic foundation for Christianity becoming the dominant world religion, particularly in the West, later on. then how he spred christianity Constantine was the first openly Christian Roman Emperor He popularized the slogan In Hoc Signo Vinces (In this Sign Conquer) the reference being to the sign of the Cross His soldiers had a cross on their shields then Although he is well known as the first Christian emperor. He allowed practice of all religions, Interestingly enough, he put both pagan and Christian symbols on his buildings and armor. then Constantine I never converted to Christianity himself. Most considered he was, but he wasn't baptized until 25 years later. Today, Constantine wouldn't count as a Christian without the baptism. A frequently asked question: Was the deathbed conversion of Constantine the act of a moral pragmatist? "Constantine was enough of a Christian to wait until his deathbed to be baptized. He knew that a ruler had to do things that were against Christian teachings, so he waited until he no longer had to do such things. That may be the thing that I most respect him for." - Kirk Johnson or a duplicitous hypocrite? "If I believe in the Christian god, but know that I will have to do things which are against the teachings of that faith, I can be excused for doing so by postponing baptism? Yes, I'll join Alcoholics Anonymous after this crate of beer. If that isn't duplicity and subscription to double standards, then nothing is." - Robin Pfeiffer A much debated question, but the impact of his actions on the succeeding history of the Church is beyond doubt. then Constantine first passed a law that Christianity would simply be tolerated. Later he made it the official faith of the Roman Empire, in the process standardizing the faith based mostly on the views of Paul. He himself converted only on his death bed. then Constantine looked at christian religion and christ as a war God and not God of love. He still loved to worship apollo. However, he stopped financing temples of other roman gods but appolo. It is known that christian believes were taken from the Torah. Even though a small part of Torah was taught by jesus. The ideas were full of humanity and civility especially for those times. Constantine was a revolutionary. then 313AD Constantine and Lucinius issue the Edict of Milan for the first time making Christianity legally equal to all other religions of the Empire. Hence, no more torture of Christians. 326AD Constantine kills his son, nephew, and his wife. 330 AD Constantine moves his capital to Byzantium later called Constantinople and now Istanbul strengthening the power of the Roman bishops over the Western Half of the Empire. then Under Constantine, any girl who ran away with her lover was burned alive. Any chaperone who should assist in such a matter had molten lead poured into her mouth. Rapists were burned at the stake. But also their women victims were punished, if they had been raped away from home, as they, according to Constantine, should have no business outside the safety of their own homes. then Crispus was suspected of having adulterous relations with his stepmother Fausta, and was therefore executed. Constantine's wife Fausta (who had remained a pagan) was executed on Constantine's orders by being suffocated in an overheated bath. Constantine had his son Crispus and his nephew Licinius Jr. jailed then killed. Thats all I have...I know I'm missing a sufficient amount of info....help please...what other stuff should I add, and where should i add it - I'm sorry for the length THANK YOU SO MUCH! more

Resolved Question: How would I go about selling the fish I breed, and possibly making an online business?

I practically breed convict cichlids and wild guppies. I am looking to sell the babies that I breed, convict cichlid babies for $1/baby and wild guppies $0.50/guppy. I know that you can post ads on E-bay and kijiji and craigslist and what not but Im looking to make a website where I can post the latest news on the babies and sales on them and what not. How would I go about doing that, where they are able to contact me and arrange to purchase the fish? Would that be considered a small business? And do you need a lisence or permit or anything to do so? I will also probably start to breed leopard geckos so it would be cichlids, wild guppies and geckos. more

Voting Question: Is this a good idea for a business? Could I make it work?

An idea just struck me for what I think is a pretty unique business: special-order incense. What I mean by this is hand-made, specially-consecrated incense. I am a practitioner of pagan herbalism, and I love burning incense, and soon I will start making my own incense. I would like to share my incense with others, mostly as gifts, but then it dawned on me that I might be able to sell it. For those that don't know, here's a little background on ritual incense. Unlike most commercially-available incense, which is burned only for aesthetic purposes, ritual incense is made and used with a goal in mind - be that purification, exorcism, meditation, clairvoyance, or the attraction of specific energies or spirits. There are two factors that need to be considered when making ritual incense: the ingredients, and the actual ritual of making it. For instance, a basic purification incense might consist of frankincense, sandalwood, and cinnamon, and while making the incense, the practitioner would focus on the goal of purification, and perhaps say a purification chant while grinding the ingredients. The mixture of ingredients is something somewhat readily available on the commercial market; the intent that goes into making them, however, is not, and that's why I'm wondering if there is a market for this kind of small business. Honestly, I don't know much about business, but as to the actual feasbility, these were my thoughts: The incense would be special-order only, that is, each client would describe what it is they are looking for, whether it be a particular ritual purpose or a blend of scents that isn't commercially available. This would allow me to fill fully customized orders, to better suit the needs of the customer. I would then charge a fee calculated based on the price of the materials that went into the product, the quantity of the product, and shipping if needed. I would only be looking to make a modest profit, as I imagine this would be a sort of recreational business, if such a thing exists. I think the biggest obstacle here is finding customers; if, however, I somehow ended up with an overflow of orders, I might have to start charging more, since I will be sacrificing more of my time. The other thing I'm wondering about is the medium through which I'd conduct business. Probably online and mail-order, as I don't have the money for a location. Are there permits required for selling handcrafted goods? You (or even the customer) don't have to "believe" in magic; the ritual incense doesn't necessarily have to be used in a full ritual, it could simply be burned in the home to bring about a certain change. For example, there are incenses designed to air out the aura, if the members of the household are fighting amongst themselves or depressed; incenses that heighten intellectual ability, to burn while studying; even incenses to help break addictions. Anyway, I guess I have three basic concerns: Is there a market for this product, how would I carry out business, and what are my legal and contractual responsibilities? Also, here's some insight into the price: Most bulk herbs do not cost very much. I suppose I would make note of the price of the bulk herbs I purchased to fill orders, then calculate based on that price how much the amount of the herb I used in the incense would have cost me. If I grew and dried the herb myself, I might charge a little more. So, say I made an incense composed of frankincense and myrrh (not very original I know, this is just for calculation purposes). Say I bought 4oz of frankincense for $2.75, and 4oz of myrrh for $3.75, and my recipe called for equal parts of both. Let's say the customer wanted 4oz of the powdered incense; that would be 2oz frankincense and 2oz myrrh. Theoretically, 2oz of frankincense would have cost me approximately $1.38, and 2oz myrrh would have cost $1.88. So the materials alone would have cost me $3.26. I would charge a fee for my efforts in making it, though I'm not sure how much this should reasonably be. For this 4oz, maybe $2.00.And then add the price it would cost me to ship, and perhaps a small fee on top of that, so I'm making a profit on the shipping as well. more

Resolved Question: Is Doctor Williams right: Liberal & Education Union policies have destroyed education for inner-city Blacks?

Dr Williams reports at the Town Hall web magazine: Detroit's (predominantly black) public schools are the worst in the nation and it takes some doing to be worse than Washington, D.C. Only 3 percent of Detroit's fourth-graders scored proficient on the most recent National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) test, sometimes called "The Nation's Report Card." Twenty-eight percent scored basic and 69 percent below basic. "Below basic" is the NAEP category when students are unable to demonstrate even partial mastery of knowledge and skills fundamental for proficient work at their grade level. It's the same story for Detroit's eighth-graders. Four percent scored proficient, 18 percent basic and 77 percent below basic. Michael Casserly, executive director of the D.C.-based Council on Great City Schools, in an article appearing in Crain's Detroit Business, (12/8/09) titled, "Detroit's Public Schools Post Worst Scores on Record in National Assessment," said, "There is no jurisdiction of any kind, at any level, at any time in the 30-year history of NAEP that has ever registered such low numbers." The academic performance of black students in other large cities such as Philadelphia, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles is not much better than Detroit and Washington. What's to be done about this tragic state of black education? The education establishment and politicians tell us that we need to spend more for higher teacher pay and smaller class size. The fact of business is higher teacher salaries and smaller class sizes mean little or nothing in terms of academic achievement. Washington, D.C., for example spends over $15,000 per student, has class sizes smaller than the nation's average, and with an average annual salary of $61,195, its teachers are the most highly paid in the nation. What about role models? Standard psychobabble asserts a positive relationship between the race of teachers and administrators and student performance. That's nonsense. Black academic performance is the worst in the very cities where large percentages of teachers and administrators are black, and often the school superintendent is black, the mayor is black, most of the city council is black and very often the chief of police is black. Black people have accepted hare-brained ideas that have made large percentages of black youngsters virtually useless in an increasingly technological economy. This destruction will continue until the day comes when black people are willing to turn their backs on liberals and the education establishment's agenda and confront issues that are both embarrassing and uncomfortable. To a lesser extent, this also applies to whites because the educational performance of many white kids is nothing to write home about; it's just not the disaster that black education is. Many black students are alien and hostile to the education process. They have parents with little interest in their education. These students not only sabotage the education process, but make schools unsafe as well. These students should not be permitted to destroy the education chances of others. They should be removed or those students who want to learn should be provided with a mechanism to go to another school. Another issue deemed too delicate to discuss is the overall quality of people teaching our children. Students who have chosen education as their major have the lowest SAT scores of any other major. Students who have an education degree earn lower scores than any other major on graduate school admission tests such as the GRE, MCAT or LSAT. Schools of education, either graduate or undergraduate, represent the academic slums of most any university. They are home to the least able students and professors. Schools of education should be shut down. Yet another issue is the academic fraud committed by teachers and administrators. After all, what is it when a student is granted a diploma certifying a 12th grade level of achievement when in fact he can't perform at the sixth- or seventh-grade level? Prospects for improvement in black education are not likely given the cozy relationship between black politicians, civil rights organizations and teacher unions.I subbed for two years, one in a suburban district about 90% White and one in an urban district about 60% Black, 25% White and the rest Asian and Hispanic. I had to deal with bad behavior in both districts, but in the urban district it was a constant. A classroom with even a little disruption is hard to learn in. The biggest problem was girls without Dads, and that was because I am an alpha type male. Only in one primary school in the urban district did the Principal encourage and enforce self-discipline in the students. That school worked. Another similar school where the Principal and teachers focused on constantly quite classrooms -- encouraging only classroom (group) behavior -- did not work. You have to be able to remove the "popcorn" -- the kids who have little ability for self-control, and allow for the remainder of the class to discuss things in good order, to have a constant low-level of discussion in order to learn. Constant silence is not education.typo: "quite" meant quiet. I preached a class management doctrine called "quietude" which is not silence, it is a low murmur of almost constant discussion, but peaceful and on topic. It does require that those students who cannot speak quietly be removed to another place. That can be a study hall or a special class for learning quietude, self-discipline. If any district or school wants to hire me to try the technique in a school or a few please email me. I'm not a educator with degree though. My degree is in Physics.G-d invented money as a tool for spiritual improvement. We all have to work for money, and be thankful for the opportunity and the chance to profit, or just to pay the bills. But if we work "for the money" we never have enough. If we work to be better persons -- and accept the hard work and constant self-challenge that means -- we do become rich. However to have respect for making a profit, honestly, is a spiritual goal to keep and mind. To accept "just getting by" may mean we are not attempting to become better persons by reaching for more difficult challenges. Still, once the bills are paid -- a job is it's own reward, and never stay in a job that is badly damaging you -- spiritually, physically. Look for a job that you enjoy! Enjoyment of a good job, a challenging job, is a sign you are in the right place, no matter how much you make. As long as you pay your bills out of current income! more

Resolved Question: Which of these Obama appointees do you like the best?

John Holdren: Director, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (Science Czar). In 1973, he advocated a “de-development” of the U.S. so the country may be “in line with the realities . . . of the world’s resource situation.” He has also favored government mandated family sizes. Gil Kerlikowski: Director, White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (Drug Czar). As police chief in Seattle, he permitted methadone vans, free needle exchanges and medical marijuana, and made marijuana possession the lowest priority of law enforcement. Gary Locke: Secretary of Commerce. During his tenure as governor of Washington, questions were raised regarding conflicts of interest arising from the state’s dealings with a company run by his brother-in-law — who was living in the executive mansion at the time. Kathleen Merrigan: Deputy Secretary of Agriculture. She urges the creation and expansion of expensive federal programs to support organic farming — while acknowledging that there is no proof organic food is any better than conventionally grown food. Mercedes Marquez: Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development, Department of Housing and Urban Development. As general manager of the Los Angeles Housing Department, Marquez crusaded for affordable housing — but “much more affordable housing was lost in L.A. on Marquez’s watch then was built,” the release noted. Karen Mills: Administrator of the Small Business Administration. An heir to the Tootsie Roll fortune, Mills has spearheaded ventures that have for the most part either failed or brought mediocre results to her investors. She has voiced support for legislation diverting small business contracts to venture capitalists. Ron Sims: Deputy Secretary, Department of Housing and Urban Development. While Sims was the King County Executive in Washington State, his office “lied and refused to provide documents that it was legally required to provide” to an investigator probing a county deal, according to ALG. The county was fined $120,000. William Spriggs: Assistant Secretary for Policy, Department of Labor. In April 2008, while the U.S. was in the grips of the recession, Spriggs co-authored a report calling for a substantial increase in the minimum wage. Cass Sunstein: Administrator, Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, White House Office of Management and Budget (Regulatory Czar). Sunstein supports the “Fairness Doctrine,” which would rein in conservative talk radio, and has suggested that animals might be given standing to sue in civil court. Cathy Zoi: Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Department of Energy. She ran a group started by former Vice President Al Gore that ran TV ads asking viewers to demand that we “repower” America with 100 percent clean energy within 10 years. more

Resolved Question: Would you support this political program?

1. Repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Allow gays to serve openly in the military without discrimination. Provide civil unions for both straight and gay couples with all the rights of a married couple. 2. Lowering the voting age, drinking age, and age of consent to 16. 3. Full-blown marijuana legalization. Decriminalizing posession of small quantities of other drugs. 4. Speech is speech. Let's drop the "Obscene" speech nonsense and let speech be REALLY free, no censorship WHAT-SO-EVER. 5. Slash the whole DEA. Scale back the ATF to a husk of its current self. Earmark all the police appropriations so they don't go to pursuing victimless crimes. 6. Government-funded college tuition. 7. Immediate repeal of all "sin taxes". Leave people's personal moral choices alone. The government needs NOT make a stance on morality, society can sort that out by itself. 8. Public option in health care. 9. Repeal of all employment-at-will laws through the use of the commerce clause. Make firing for incompetency straightforward and red-tape-free, but make it hard to fire employees for fighting for higher wages and more benefits. 10. Streamline all of the Administration's red tape. Cut it as much as it's humanely possible, and get the redundant government employees either to do something productive or to find work elsewhere. 11. Declaration of a right to privacy. 12. Ensuring no appropriations bill may contain earmarks unsolicited by the receiving department, as a common-sense measure for cutting wasteful spending. 13. Making sure the Government takes control whenever it bails out a company. As a rule of thumb, place failing companies under their workers' control instead of handing them to other bunch of equally clueless corporate retards. 14. Implementing common-sense gun rights and gun control policies: Cut VIOLENT felons and nuts' access to guns, and leave everyone else arm himself and tote weapons to its hearts' content. Instant background check, no waiting period, mandatory shall-issue permits. 15. Gradually phasing out racially-based affirmative action. Keep it in place until we can replace it with income-based affirmative action. Scrap racially-based AA then. 16. Tight nondiscrimination laws to ensure a meritocracy is achieved. No-one's views or identity should bar them from a job (except if it's political or religious) as long as they're able to do it right. On the same token, favor equal work, equal pay initiatives and stay out of unions' business. 17. Right-to-work laws together with strong protection for the right to unionize. Let multiple unions compete and cooperate freely. Make collective bargainings binding by law, so an employer may not default on what he previously bargained with its workers. What are your thoughts on it? Yup, I know it's uber-liberal, but I'd like a reasoned disagreement if there's to be one.You have noticed that the plan in itself includes many wasteful spending cuts. While the free college tuition and health care would be expensive, no other costly provisions are implemented. The current tax model would easily acommodate it. With the funds we use to prosecute vice (which we wouldn't do anymore) we could easily pay the tuitions. On the other hand, the universal health care would be run as a zero-cost model: You evenly divide costs among all users of the system. Employers would have this non-profiteering alternative as long as it was viable, as would employees, while pushing for legislation that makes medical care cheaper (such as mandatory generics use when patents expire and an overhaul of the torts system)2) Drinking age 18 then? I wouldn't push ages of consent HIGHER, and 16 is prevailing, so I'd defen 16 :PBy income-based Affirmative Action I mean favoring people based on socioeconomic status instead of race: Those with a working class background would be helped offset the social networking and funds of the rich guys. more

Resolved Question: What should I do with my life?

Hello I am a 27 year old hispanic male from San Diego, CA 12/1/2009. What should I do with my life? The reason I asked that is because I feel spaced out or starting to feel like a failure to my family and my self. When I was 18 to 22 I worked as a painter then a small box truck driver for $10 to $12 per hr. At 22 years of age I obtained my CA Class A tractor trailer driver license, then I work as a driver for 2 years earning $16.00 per hr. then I was laid off in 2006, In 2007 I obtained my CA Painting Contractors License, from 2007 to present 2009 I have been trying to run my painting business with one employee myself. It has been horrible I have not been able to function like a good business would not enough work or earnings, I have barley been able to make enough to pay my rent and bills until recently. I am currently starting to feel like all my efforts in accomplishing different licenses and permits to make a living have not meant anything and have gone down the drain. I am starting to feel like a failure, I have never used drugs, don't like alcohol, and stay away from trouble. What should I do with my life? more

Resolved Question: Do you know what is in Obama/Pelosi care reforms proposals?

How do you like this? Be careful what you wish for and I encourage you to resist-and-purge!! Will you join me in resist-and-purge? What the government will require you to do: • Sec. 202 (p. 91-92) of the bill requires you to enroll in a "qualified plan." If you get your insurance at work, your employer will have a "grace period" to switch you to a "qualified plan," meaning a plan designed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. If you buy your own insurance, there's no grace period. You'll have to enroll in a qualified plan as soon as any term in your contract changes, such as the co-pay, deductible or benefit. • Sec. 224 (p. 118) provides that 18 months after the bill becomes law, the Secretary of Health and Human Services will decide what a "qualified plan" covers and how much you'll be legally required to pay for it. That's like a banker telling you to sign the loan agreement now, then filling in the interest rate and repayment terms 18 months later. View Full Image McCaughey2 Associated Press Protestors wave signs in front of the Capitol on Thursday. McCaughey2 McCaughey2 On Nov. 2, the Congressional Budget Office estimated what the plans will likely cost. An individual earning $44,000 before taxes who purchases his own insurance will have to pay a $5,300 premium and an estimated $2,000 in out-of-pocket expenses, for a total of $7,300 a year, which is 17% of his pre-tax income. A family earning $102,100 a year before taxes will have to pay a $15,000 premium plus an estimated $5,300 out-of-pocket, for a $20,300 total, or 20% of its pre-tax income. Individuals and families earning less than these amounts will be eligible for subsidies paid directly to their insurer. • Sec. 303 (pp. 167-168) makes it clear that, although the "qualified plan" is not yet designed, it will be of the "one size fits all" variety. The bill claims to offer choice—basic, enhanced and premium levels—but the benefits are the same. Only the co-pays and deductibles differ. You will have to enroll in the same plan, whether the government is paying for it or you and your employer are footing the bill. • Sec. 59b (pp. 297-299) says that when you file your taxes, you must include proof that you are in a qualified plan. If not, you will be fined thousands of dollars. Illegal immigrants are exempt from this requirement. • Sec. 412 (p. 272) says that employers must provide a "qualified plan" for their employees and pay 72.5% of the cost, and a smaller share of family coverage, or incur an 8% payroll tax. Small businesses, with payrolls from $500,000 to $750,000, are fined less. Eviscerating Medicare: In addition to reducing future Medicare funding by an estimated $500 billion, the bill fundamentally changes how Medicare pays doctors and hospitals, permitting the government to dictate treatment decisions. • Sec. 1302 (pp. 672-692) moves Medicare from a fee-for-service payment system, in which patients choose which doctors to see and doctors are paid for each service they provide, toward what's called a "medical home." The medical home is this decade's version of HMO-restrictions on care. A primary-care provider manages access to costly specialists and diagnostic tests for a flat monthly fee. The bill specifies that patients may have to settle for a nurse practitioner rather than a physician as the primary-care provider. Medical homes begin with demonstration projects, but the HHS secretary is authorized to "disseminate this approach rapidly on a national basis." A December 2008 Congressional Budget Office report noted that "medical homes" were likely to resemble the unpopular gatekeepers of 20 years ago if cost control was a priority. • Sec. 1114 (pp. 391-393) replaces physicians with physician assistants in overseeing care for hospice patients. • Secs. 1158-1160 (pp. 499-520) initiates programs to reduce payments for patient care to what it costs in the lowest cost regions of the country. This will reduce payments for care (and by implication the standard of care) for hospital patients in higher cost areas such as New York and Florida. • Sec. 1161 (pp. 520-545) cuts payments to Medicare Advantage plans (used by 20% of seniors). Advantage plans have warned this will result in reductions in optional benefits such as vision and dental care. • Sec. 1402 (p. 756) says that the results of comparative effectiveness research conducted by the government will be delivered to doctors electronically to guide their use of "medical items and services." Questionable Priorities: While the bill will slash Medicare funding, it will also direct billions of dollars to numerous inner-city social work and diversity programs with vague standards of accountability. • Sec. 399V (p. 1422) provides for grants to community "entities" with no required qualifications except having "documented community activity and experience with community healthcare workers" to "educate, guide, and provi more

Resolved Question: migrating after marriage... what are our options?

My boyfriend and I in our midtwenties and planning to marry in about 2 years time. We live in Jakarta, Indonesia. Because of the pollution here, I've been having health problems. I've lived in medium-sized major cities in the US, Australia, and Europe, and have always been a healthy girl. But since living in Jakarta I've been suffering frequent colds, perpetual headaches, and very low stamina, especially on and around my period. It may be anemia but I haven't checked because I don't really trust the doctors here. My boyfriend--a young lawyer by profession--has been a globetrotter like me, and has expressed interest in living elsewhere, although we haven't really started any serious planning. He was born in Switzerland, but as the son of an Indonesian embassy employee dual citizenship was prohibited so his ID card states Jakarta as his birthplace instead of Geneva. He graduated both his bachelors and masters in law from The Netherlands, whose laws are the basis of Indonesian law. Likewise, Dutch law is concordant with French law and the law of other countries based on Ancient Roman law. He specialises in corporate and business law, and has worked in Holland as well as Indonesia. I have a Canadian permanent residence, which my family and I have earned through legal procedures that started when I was still a minor. I have never lived there. My parents and I visited Canada in 2007 to activate the permit (I was 22), but we are required to reenter in 5 years time ie 2012 (I will be 27). In 2011 I expect to graduate with a bachelors in performing arts communication and in 2012 a masters in journalism or broadcasting. Over the past 3 years I have worked on and off as translator/interpreter, master of ceremony (hosting small concerts and seminars), and hosting a radio talk show. Recently I've decided to cross over to brand management/advertising as a copywriter, hoping that it would land me a fun but challenging job supporting quirky creative professionals like graphic designers, professional photographers, product developers, and others in charge of advertising/brand development campaigns. I plan to join campus clubs to start my portfolio and hope that it would land me with internships or projects elsewhere so I would at least have some experience by the time I migrate. In the future I'd prefer to work on a freelance basis, in case my would-be-husband might get transferred frequently, plus I would like my time to be relatively flexible so we can raise a family. OK, so in short my boyfriend has ties with Europe and I have ties with Canada. Once married, we want to migrate together somewhere (not necessarily Canada or Switzerland although those are the more obvious options for now). I do NOT prefer EU countries, although I'm not totally against it either. We need to prepare how we're going to live overseas and still be able to thrive in our professions. The way I have seen others do this is by joining a multinational company that happens to have an office in Jakarta, then climb the corporate ladder to get transferred elsewhere... how would this work out for a lawyer? (I'm more concerned about him having the fixed job, as I expect to work more as an independent professional in the future) Where can we find more information to explore our options so we can start preparing ahead of time? Companies to work for? International professional associations to join? Policies concerning spouses of Canadian permanent residents or the possibility of an adult born in Switzerland to request citizenship/permanent residency? Policies of other countries? Cities with significantly better air quality than Jakarta? Thanks :) more

Resolved Question: Do I pay taxes on a settlement against a bank?

I left my job of 10 years with Kraft foods, and moved to a small town because we were assuming a SBA loan to buy the towns grocery store. The local bank was handling it. The loan officer/ vice president told us everything was fine. We moved, got all of our licenses, permits, accounts with venders set-up...and even had meetings with the main food supplier. Everything seemed great. The banker even said we needed to get a life insurance policy for the amount of the SBA loan assumption, $300k . We were not rich, or even upper class. We managed to get togother around $18,000 after selling a camper and tax refund. We moved in July of 2008...and for 4 months all we heard from the bank was..."EVERYTHING IS FINE, JUST WAITING ON SBA REDTAPE"..I went against their wishes and called the SBA myself, only to realize... while the bank HAD talked and emailed the SBA about us...the bank NEVER ACTUALLY sent the paperwork in , or the formal written application. The bank tried to blame it on the SBA..and said they lost it. My question..."if the bank talked in emails and on the phone to the SBA like they.. AND the SBA said...wouldn't it have come up in conversation sometime...."oh, there is no application"?..anyways, fast forward, we have a great case, I have a stack of emails from the bank...and they basically hung themselves for whatever reason. Our credit was ruined , I have not been able to find ANY work in about one year now, I'm 42 and factory is what I knew. Bad time to look for a job I know....This ruined us, our credit is terrible, we have 2 credit cards with less than $8,000..that we just cannot pay...we have went thru the money saved. we are getting food stamps and cash...any less man might have killed himself, or done something else stupid. The business lawyer that set up our buying contract is handling this, and it looks like the bank is going to give in. We asked for $250k. The house we had before we couldn't sell, the bank took it....no job for over one year, credit ruined(hard to put a value on ruined credit)...some money we did spend on this(computer, software...and what not)...anyways...........Is this settlement taxed? I'm not for sure , while part of it is for lost wages , some is recovery, and some is the ruined credit...and what we have had to go thru now....we are in Missouri. There is a list of things the bank did to us..including possible fraud. Our attorney, said if it went to court...we could a jury trial even..if my attorney fees are deductable...I don't have money to pay him now, he is getting a % of settlement. I have had no income to pay ANY federal tax this year, my wife has worked part time at walmart..but they have not been taking any out either, we have needed every penny to live on.. more

Voting Question: Could someone explain this to me?

This is from Wiki's page on The Four Seasons: Four Seasons does not own any of its properties; it operates them on behalf of real estate owners and developers. The contracts between Four Seasons and property owners typically permits the company to participate in the design of the property and run it with nearly total control over every aspect of the operation. Four Seasons generally earns 3 percent of the gross income and approximately 5 percent of profits from the properties it operates, and the property owners are required to additionally contribute money for chain-wide sales, marketing and reservations systems. Four Seasons hotels have larger staffs than competing chains, therefore they create a separate reserve accounts to cover upkeep costs. While profit margins are relatively low, the reputation of the brand and the value of the hotel for sale as well as loan collateral generates developer interest I think it means the hotels are not owned by them, but by individual business managers, and that the parent company collects a small amount of money from each one. Is this right? Does that mean that it's like a franchise, and business managers have to buy the hotel first?By the way, I typed out the third paragraph more

Resolved Question: Can someone help me with this? Its a legal question about a small/home business.?

Does anyone know what this means: The following section describes special conditions under which certain uses are permitted in a zoning district. A building permit or certificate of occupancy shall not be issued for any permitted use with "special conditions" until all of the required conditions have been met. ... Home occupation (residential). A home occupation is an occupation carried on as an accessory use in the main structure of home by a resident without the employment of additional persons, without the use of a sign to advertise the occupation, without offering any commodity or service for sale on the premises, which does not create obnoxious noise or other obnoxious conditions to abutting residential property such as emission of odor, increased traffic or generation of light or smoke. A home occupation shall specifically exclude the operation of a repair garage, plumbing shop or similar activity. Does this mean that I can run a small business out of my apartment? There would be no extra people going in and out of the apartment and there will be no signs or loud music. I would be the only person working there. more

Resolved Question: can a customer sue a small business for taking too long to do a job?

A neighbor of mine hired a local contracting agency ((they have very excellent reviews and were referred to them by a trusting source) to removal an oil tank. This company has two , three men crews that come out to do the work, and they service all of the state. The only problem is they gave the contractor the deposit ($200 deposit on a $1200 job) about 2 months ago and ran in to a few problems with the town ( the town was back logged and it would take an extended period of time for them to issue a permit for the work) so the job was pushed back a week or so, well one thing turns in to a another and twice when they were supposed to come and do the work they did not show up because they had some type of emergency at the job before ( underground utilities were not properly marked so they hit lines and had to replace them asap) it has been a few months now and the job is supposed to be done next week; if it is not done on that day can my neighbor sue them for taking so long to do the work?the contract does not say how long it will take to get it done, they do issue a refund within the first 30 days- but the contractor said they would give back the entire deposit. more

Resolved Question: Met someone who is keeping a young raccoon as a pet?

I realize this is a long question, but the basic summary is should I do anything about someone I just met and don't know well who is illegally keeping a raccoon in unfit conditions although they plan to release him at some point? The other day I met a friend of my fiancee's who he met at work. We went to his house to later go to a Halloween party. They had lots of pets (a cat, gecko, snake, and hamster) and apparently their roommate caught a young raccoon a little while ago (I'm not sure how long ago or how young it is). I was concerned because, well.. you can tell that the cage is too small. Raccoons in the wild need a lot of space and this cage was about the size of a small dog kennel. I mean it had nowhere to go, it sat in its ferret hammock and that was about all the room there was in the cage. They are feeding him dog food and recently washed him. I'm concerned for the health of the raccoon. I just met these people so it's not really my business to tell them that the raccoon shouldn't be kept like that, but it shouldn't. It's illegal here in GA to own one without a permit which I believe the guy does not have although I'm not sure. They have said that they probably wouldn't be keeping the raccoon when it gets older. Should I do something about it? If so, what should I do? Or is it just not my place to interfere? I don't even know these people, I just met them the other day and doubt I would talk to them again. I'm wondering if I should call animal control or something though, because that raccoon will probably die from health problems if they keep it so cooped up like that. :( But maybe I should just let them decide what to do and stay out of it.. I don't really know, anyone got some advice? Thanks for any help. more

Resolved Question: what is the likelyhood of a new foodcart business succeding in the philippines?

i want to move to the philippines and get married. i know all the risks involved about trusting people. i want to start a small business to support my family there. i have read that the foodcart business is becoming very popular there. the lady i intend to marry is very well business minded and college educated. i was just wondering if anyone else out there has done this kind of business in the philippines or knows someone who has and can tell me about their experiences and give me a realistic estimate on what kind of money can be made in such a venture. i have read that such a business can be started for as little as $500 usd, but i am thinking by the time the cart is purchased, supplies for one month, the price of renting a stall, and the cost of business permits are paid, the total cost would be closer to $1000 usd. any input will be helpful. more

Resolved Question: Business start up question(s)?

Basically, here is what I want to do. I have a small business providing various services like Mother's Helper, Household Assistant, Personal Assistant, etc. services. I need help BADLY. My questions are: What licenses and permits do I need to become an actual business? I know I need to register my business name and get a business license. Anything else? Would it be better to hire directly or use a staffing service? Does anyone know how much a staffing service costs? If I do hire directly, do i have to provide health insurance? I know I need to speak with an attorney and I will but I thought I'd ask here first just to get a feel for things. Thanks! Any advice is appreciated and links would be great. more

Resolved Question: How to serve the transgender community in a better way, so that they can live with pride & dignity in society?

THE PRESENT ACT: There is only one provision in the Constitution of India for these people, i.e. 377. Section 377 of the IPC can never be the right provision for them. It only permits them for homosexuality and not at all overcomes their basic problems or the requirements of employment, self-employment, and living with pride and honor in the society. Article 14, 15, 19 & 21 states equal rights to every citizen of India but are not applicable to these people? Why they are entreated in today’s independent and republic Nation? This question is always unanswered……. Section 377 is not their necessity but they are in need of equal rights, love & dignity in the society. Efforts must be taken by the government to frame some other sections for them which will meet their purpose, survival and existence. THEIR PROBLEMS: They encounter a lot of tribulations like jobs, status, marriage, education, business and much more. There is no provision in the Indian constitution for these people. They don’t get job nor can they start any small business to fill their hunger. Their family is embarrassed on them and unknowingly they are detached from their family. Even the society curses them and looks them from an angle of vulgar ness. As a result they feel very insecure and join their own community satisfactorily. But there are no income sources to them and unwillingly they entreat everywhere and are also forced to sell themselves to meet their hunger. Why this is happening in our society? The question remains unanswered and many don’t feel necessary to speak on this issue. THEIR PERSONAL LIFE: To understand the various problems & troubles of transgender or eunuch community, one should definitely speak the family in which these people are born. They are born as males and the symptoms of eunuch ness are noticed between the age of 12 to 15 or 16. The society starts to curse them immediately after knowing their situation. And if the concern person is in schooling or in college, he is ultimately forced to give up education. The family of such person tries everything to bring them back, but nothing can exist before a natural misfortune. Slowly their family too gets annoyed with them & as such they feel very insecure even in the society and their family. Ultimately they prefer staying with their community people for security reasons. They belong to all the castes and creed and also celebrate all the festivals of our nation. They are the citizens of India without equal rights, why? Why can’t they come up shoulder to shoulder with the other citizens? The reason is only because of no existing laws for them in the Indian constitution. They don’t have any income sources for them and ultimately they have to plead, dance & sell themselves for starve. (THIS SITUATION IS GOING IN OUR INDEPENDENT & REPUBLIC INDIA) One can’t imagine a situation when ones childhood friend starts teasing and abusing the other when he knows he knows about the other’s eunuch ness. How it feels…..No one can understand….. This is one of the many other severe problems in our nation & I think that someone should start sweeping. I’m ready to sweep, provided the support of our honorable dignitaries and the government. Can anyone tell me the ways and means to serve these downtrodden society for long long years? Can anyone join me in my mission? Many e-mails, letters etc have been already been forwarded to various ministries like Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Bombay High Court, Supreme Court of India, National Human Rights Commission and many many more, but not yet attended by any them for whatsoever may be the reason. more

Resolved Question: Am I allowed to park here?

I'm in high school and I want to drive to school, but I'm having trouble finding parking spaces. My school sells parking permits, but they are only good for 4 out of the 6 grading periods, so I'm wondering where I can park nearby. There's a library very close by, but they specified that students are not allowed to park there. There's a McDonald's about 10minutes away walking, and there are no signs saying students may not park there. There's a plaza of several small business buildings and shops, which also do not have any signs that would indicate no student parking. Can I park at the McDonald's or the plaza? Or would I get fined or towed?I thought this was pretty obvious, but I guess not. What I meant by 4 out of 6 grading periods is that there are 6 grading periods in a school year for my school, the parking permit is good for 4 of those 6 grading periods. My school address is 1 stevenson dr, lincolnshire, IL more
