House Small Business Panel to Unveil Health Care Bill
House Small Business Committee Chairwoman Nydia Velazquez plans to unveil health care legislation this afternoon in a Capitol Hill news conference.
The Small Business Cooperative for Healthcare Options to Improve Coverage for Employees Act (Small Business CHOICE) is designed to encourage small firms to join health insurance cooperatives. The bill's main co-sponsor is Rep. Joseph Pitts (R-Pa.).
These purchasing cooperatives enable small businesses, which usually operate within the boundaries of a particular state, to collectively negotiate for improved health insurance for employees.
Small businesses are currently able to form these co-ops, but the bill would increase the incentive to do so by offering a refundable tax credit to small firms with no more than 100 employees that join a cooperative. more
Bankruptcy may loom for Mervyns
Company officials reportedly are trying to persuade vendors to ship merchandise for their crucial back-to-school season.
This occurred after the company lost a source of financing from lender CIT Group Inc., which has dramatically reduced business loans, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. If the effort fails, bankruptcy is a possibility for the midrange department store chain based in Hayward, Calif., which operates 177 stores in Arizona and six other western states. The company employs about 23,000 people.
Roy Berces, a Mervyns spokesman, said Monday he could not comment on reports of the retailer's financial difficulties. He did say, however, that Mervyns still plans to open a new 80,000-square-foot store Friday in Newark, Calif.
In May, Mervyns announced plans to close five to 10 underperforming stores, but open another five in its core western market. more
UnitedHealthcare to pay $800k in North Carolina settlement The
North Carolina also will participate in reviews of United Health's business that are required under the multistate deal.
It's the second time that United Health has reached a monetary settlement with the state in the past five years. In 2004, the company agreed to pay $2.2 million to settle what the state claimed were "systematic problems" with its claims processing, Pearson says.
UnitedHealthcare does not admit any violations of Insurance Department policy or state law under terms of the most recent settlement. Its fine, as required by North Carolina law, will be distributed to the state's public schools.
"Today's agreement provides a meaningful way to assess how we measure up to the high standards of service that people in North Carolina expect," the company said in a statement. more

Resolved Question: Where can I get an affordable liability insurance for my new small business in California?
I'm trying to open a new residential cleaning business. I already got a quote from state farm but it was way too expensive. 2500 dollars per year. I'm new in this so, I can't afford that amount because I don't even have costumers yet. Thank you!. moreResolved Question: Being able to set your own price?
Here is a quote regarding the current health insurance fiasco being forced through (sorry.. hard to keep my bias hidden): "He said the more immediate changes would include enabling uninsured Americans with pre-existing medical conditions to purchase affordable coverage, prohibiting insurance companies from imposing lifetime and annual limits on care and giving small businesses tax credits to buy coverage for employees." I want a liberal to use CAR insurance as an example of how it makes sense to force Insurance companies to change their prices of product. In other words... if you have a car wreck.. you should be able to call an insurance company, and without letting them know about your destroyed car, purchase insurance, and they MUST sell it to you? how is this not a fair analogy? Why should government force companies to change their pricing structure? Would you as a liberal want me to come to your house and force you to sell your property and set my own "fair" prices for it? I cannot see how this is reasonable or just. ANd what the HELL are actuarial tables for ANYHOW!!!!! god.. is there one reasonable liberal who understands how insurance works. moreResolved Question: What is a good estimate for small business insurance?
I am working a project for my MBA class. I am organizing a small business for the project. It's a cooperative of specialty poultry producers. The cooperative markets the poultry to local major retailers and transports end products (after processing, packaging and storage to retailer DC's). I need a quote for general liability insurance and insurance on a small refrigerated truck (driven by someone with a pristine record). I need annual premium estimates that coincide with an exact policy amount - the least possible please! Online insurance quoters are not working. moreResolved Question: Where can we Find Reliable Cheap Life Insurance Quotes?
I recently started a home internet based business. When I was just starting out I went without insurance for a while. Now that things are going well I would like to buy a life insurance policy. There are a ton of life insurance sites, but most of them seem biased or focused on an individual provider. Where can I find a good life insurance quote site that is unbiased or gives me quotes from a wide array of services? Also, are there any good tips for saving money buying life insurance for small business owners? moreResolved Question: Where can I Find Reliable Cheap Life Insurance Quotes?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091105/ap_on_go_co/us_health_care_uninsurables quoting... President Barack Obama promises would immediately start serving patients with pre-existing medical problems. Wait a second. Read the fine print. You may have to be uninsured for six months to qualify. Now, concerns are being raised about the design of the high-risk pools. In addition to the six-month wait, there's a more fundamental issue — whether $5 billion set aside for the three-year program is enough. The money would be used to help people in poor health pay premiums. If the Democrats' risk pool starts running out of money, the government may have to start a waiting list, raise premiums or take other unpopular measures. Congress could be asked for a bailout. Several independent experts say concerns about the financing are valid. "It would seem that ($5 billion) is going to be small relative to the need," said Thomas Buchmueller, a University of Michigan business professor. Some 30 states now have risk pools for those who can't get health insurance on the private market, covering about 200,000 people at a cost of around $1 billion a year. "This is clearly not going to be enough money to cover everybody," said Pollitz. .......does "this" make obama marxism any more palatable to you?..... WHEN IS ENOUGH...ENOUGH?tch tch tch...adam...adam ..adam...i have given you the textbook definition of marxism THREE TIMES NOW. im unclear why we have to do it again but, ok, for your "clarification" here it is.... The doctrines of Karl Marx and his associate Friedrich Engels on economics, politics, and society. They include the notion of economic determinism — that political and social structures are determined by the economic conditions of people(adam, ahhh could this be THIS HEALTH INSURANCE FIASCO, rather than reality). Marxism calls for a classless society in which all means of production are commonly owned (gee adam, gm, aig, where does it stop)(communism), a system to be reached as an inevitable result of the struggle between the leaders of capitalism and the workers. the point adam, for the umpteenth time is THESE ARENT THE PRINICPLES ON WHICH THIS COUNTRY WAS FOUNDED. theyre not healthy, theyre cancerous and doomed to failure. First, Republicans argued that it was too expensive. (Then, you found $750 billion dollars for rich white people who were destroying the economy, so that issue was dropped.) Then, it became that the most important thing was "choice." (Well the public option was just that an option and I don't hear that any more.) Then it became that the public option would put insurance companies out of business because they could charge so low prices. (To which the American people resoundingly said "so?") So in response to that you started quoting an insurance company sponsored report that said it would drive up premiums. (This was rejected out of hand because it came from the insurance companies. But also it didn't make any sense according to the laws of supply and demand.) Then I heard that the problem was it was done in secret with no transparency. (That issue has been dropped now that the bill has been published and is on the internet. And its still just a bill. I think I saw a schoolhouse rock how that works.) Now last week, the argument became that businesses would drop their own insurance policies and pick up the cheaper government option. Is this what Republicans want to go with that we can't have a public option because it will save small businesses money? REALLY? Or do you have another excuse ready for this week?Alex, that wasn't the same as the other. The first one was that it would put Insurance companies out of business. The second was that it would save small businesses money. 65% of Americans support a public option, who is it who isn't listening?Thelastninja... I hope you meant 12 billion because otherwise it saved 11.02 trillion over projected estimates. Then explain why you didn't support the government initiated, self-paying cooperative.Wait, nobody has told me why saving small businesses money is a bad idea. And, I have read the entire bill. The turning it into a single payer in five years is not what it says. 202(c) clearly says that insurance companies cannot offer insurance as part of a benefits package that allows LESS coverage for more money than what the public option costs. You are still welcome to purchase insurance - as part of an employee benefits package - that offers less as long as it costs less. And, it states you can buy any insurance for yourself. Additionally its not about control its about getting insurance to 46 million uninsured! 45,000 people died because of lack of insurance last year. Thats 15 times more than what caused us to spend 3 trillion dollars on two failed wars!Nancy D there are 46 million people who don't have health care and it is only an option. 65% of Americans want a public option, should we scrap the lives of 46 million and 65% because there are "many people" who like their insurance. So Alex you're saying that the insurance companies are efficient well run corporations who can't compete with inefficient government? Doesn't that fly in the face of Reagan and Friedman?**** No religion in this pub... I think you are missing the point of the exercise. I was looking for the Republican unsubstantiated excuse, not a well thought out argument. You obviously are not a Republican or Democrat. You actually make decision based on evidence? *** to everybody else, I left the democratic party because they couldn't get their stuff together. This is just more evidence thereof. moreResolved Question: Whats the cheapest car insurance quote i can get for a peugeot 106 1.5L diesel?

We would like to start small business – bus tours. 1-3 days trips, radius within 1,000 miles, having CDL and no record. I have called to several agents and tried to browse several quotes but always I ended when I was asked about the type of bus and other details. We do not mean to buy any bus before we would know any insurance estimate. First of all, we want to make cost calculation. I am sure that the exact amount would be changed once we buy a bus, but can any of you give me any estimate about how much is bus insurance? Any comparison? Please, do not tell me that it depends…. I already know it and it makes my only mad. I do not need exact amount now, I only need some estimate for our cost calculation. Thank you in advance. moreResolved Question: Anybody believe Obama's new claim 'we can't have job growth without healthcare reform'?
Remember when the Obama promised to create 3.5 million "green jobs"?? And remember how the stimulus was supposed to "create" jobs?? Now he claims that his watered down "reform" effort is going to result in job creation..........despite the fact that the "reform" is currently nothing but $900 billion in subsidies for poor people and does NOTHING to address skyrocketing cost increases. What do you think?? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/03/obama-we-cant-have-job-gr_n_308586.html In his weekly radio and Internet video address Saturday, Obama said his proposed health care overhaul would create jobs by making small business startups more affordable. If aspiring entrepreneurs believe they can stay insured while switching jobs, he said, they will start new businesses and hire workers. "I hear about it from small business owners who want to grow their companies and hire more people, but they cant, because they can barely afford to insure the employees they have," Obama said. "One small business owner wrote to me that health care costs are and I quote 'stifling my business growth.' He said that the money he wanted to use for research and development, and to expand his operations, has instead been 'thrown into the pocket of healthcare insurance carriers.'steve g..............I put Obama's actual quote in the details. I understand the headline was Huffington Post's words. But they summed it up pretty good.ieat...........So are you implying that if the majority would get out of progressive's Dems way, something positive could happen?? Well unfortunately that's not how it works.circitz............I'm not saying the current healthcare system doesn't need some serious reform. But more subsidies is hardly a solution. moreResolved Question: Admit tobacco use on health insurance application?
I am finally getting my health insurance benefits at work through Medical Mutual of Ohio. I have been a smoker for the past few years and at one point quit (using Chantix), but started again. I had the same health insurance company when I was taking Chantix through my father while in college (so I know Medical Mutual will see that I took the drug). Should I now admit to smoking again on my health insurance application? I am only 22 and am perfectly healthy in every other reguard. What would be the consequence if I lied? At some point soon I want to get the Chantix drug again and attempt to quit. I really don't want to upset my employer, however, with a high quote for me because I am a smoker (it's a small business). I am starting a small technology business (computer repair, HDTV repair, etc) and I want to get a SMALL business liability insurance policy. I have contacted 2 local brokers & 2 online brokers, and the smallest I have seen so far is for $300,000; with the online ones having a minimum of $1,000,000 each. My husband and I live in NJ and do not have health insurance. I stay home with three preschoolers and my husband is selftemployed (he started his small business a year ago). We are not low income family, but a quoted insurance of $850 per month sounds really taxing. I just found out that I am pregnant. I've been trying to get quotes, but all websites needs my business info. which I don't have yet.. pls someone give me an estimate for the minimum coverage! :( moreVoting Question: Question about Short Term Disability & Maternity Leave?
So, I work for a small company (5 employees) and they do not currently offer short term disability. I am interested in getting it, as my hubby and I plan on getting pregnant within the next few months. I just raised the question at our company meeting this morning and I was told to send the owner an email to look into it. His email is a black hole of nothingness so I don't expect to get anything done that way. So I have started filling the whole "Send me a quote" things on the website to have them sent to myself. What I need from you guys is some info/feedback which companies do/don't offer the following: 1) Maternity Coverage 2) At what % of income 3) for how long? (6 week normal, 8 week c-section?) 4) how long did you have to be a policy holder for before you were covered 5) is this through your business or personal.. and if you can tell me how much that would be awesome And for any of you insurance agents out there who may read this, we're located in Pennsylvania and looking for any reasonable quotes you may be able to offer.yeah so if i saved $200/month until i got 3 months worth of salary built up we're looking at me not getting pregnant for 5 years, so I'd be 36 so thats really not an option. Also - I've already had one c-section and plan to have another, so im not sure how a giant gash across my abdomen after major abdominal surgery doesn't count as a disability especially if my doctor says I'm not allowed to drive for 6+ weeks, and my job is all driving. moreResolved Question: Does the Tower of Babel story work as political metaphor, and make sense of US politics today?
What I'm getting at is the reason that God provides for giving everyone a different language at Babel. I believe He is quoted in Genesis as saying that He will sow confusion that human beings will not ever complete the tower, ascend to heaven, and challenge God's pre-eminence. Today most Christians, atheists, Jews & Muslims in R&S make very little reference to the Tower of Babel story; we all fight about other things in here. But politically and economically, aren't we a little like the people in the Tower of Babel story? We face a world that's in a severe economic recession, and in the US the unemployment rate is at 9.5 percent and rising. Millions of people in the US are losing their houses; many millions more are still without affordable health insurance. Meanwhile the big Wall Street banks have accepted enormous financial bailouts from the government, and yet they're still not making easy credit available to individual consumers and small business owners who need it. It's also unclear, so far, that the US government will be able to overcome the resistance of the big oil & coal companies and enact a good program to curb global climate change. So all Americans - religious believers and atheists alike -- face some really important political challenges and political and economic problems, and the futures of our children and grandschildren depend on meeting and solving those problems well. But we are scattered in confusion -- so just because of speaking many different languages, but because we belong to dozens of different religious denominations -- or in some cases to no religious faith at all. The unemployment rates keep rising, and the banks keep getting money from the government without providing credit to people who need it -- and we're permanently divided & impotent because of our disagreements over religion. Is this a new Babel, perhaps? Are there "principalities and powers" who want to keep us perpetually divided over religion and anti-religion, so that we never challenge the power of the economic & political elites?Sorry; there are some confusing typos in this question; my bad. What I meant to say is that we are divided -- NOT just because we speak different languages, but also because we adhere to possibly dozens of different religious traditions, and some anti-religious traditions as well. As the people at Babel failed to complete their tower because of a confusion of languages, so, also, we in the USA today (and around the world) are failing to unite to solve common problems, at least partly because we embrace a confusion of different religious faiths. Are we getting fooled by a powerful economic and political elite into division and powerlessness, based on religion -- just as the people at Babel were fooled by God into a similar kind of powerlessness, this one arising from different languages?K Bell - Thank you for seeing my point. I think you're not quite right to say that God saw nothing wrong with the tower building, though. This is from part of the Genesis story: 6 And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do; and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. 7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. 8 It looks to me as if God in this story is worried that "they have all one language ... and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. " He then, on that basis, decides to confound their languages, etc. I mean no disrespect to God, if he really exists. How could I? But isn't this the classic behavior of the power elite - any power elite? To divide the powerless according to language, religion, race, nationality etc, and thus keep them powerless? moreResolved Question: Settled down privately for a small damage, but what if...?
Hello, I am in Ontario, Canada I was in bad luck today so I hit somebody's car in a parking lot. It was not very bad. The side fender was bended a bit. But I was not sure whether it affected surroundings. So I did not run away, instead I looked for the owner. I found him and he understood my background so we decided to deal with this privately. We went to two body shops to make a quote on the damage of his car. Two different body shop, one is like a dealership-certified and the other one is more like private business, have almost estimated the same price: one is 638 after 100 discount and the other is 600 (cash payment). In terms of money, I definitely went for $600 and the other party agreed on this. So we went to the bank and I got her a money order with a receipt held by me now. It seems everything has been settled. But I am still worrying if she later finds out and even prove (says, she is not a lair) there is another dent on the side door due to this accident and she asked for more money, says 100 or 200 more, because it is needed to repair for that part, on top of the $600 we agreed earlier. So I am wondering, in laws or insurance rules, whether she would even have this option to ask for another 100 or 200 from me. Or whether she would have an option to report to her insurance company if I refused to pay for the extra. I was so careless that I did not ask for a letter written and signed for the settlement. Would it be a big problem? But I got a money order receipt in her name.I appreciate the following responses. So will I have been in trouble since I do not photocopy or have a written notice for the settlement? moreResolved Question: Small Business General Liability Insurance rates for premiums and audits?
The small business that I work for is currently shopping for a GL carrier and in getting quotes, questions are coming up that I just cannot find the answers for. Our current GL company basis our premium on our policy year payroll. However, one company that we are getting a quote from is basing the quote on the policy year gross income. Now, these two numbers are VASTLY different and I don't know why one is basing my premium on one item and another company on another item. Another question is Audit Rates. The audit rates between these two companies, (again based on different item dollar amounts,) differs also and I was wondering what a standard audit dollar amount would be, or maybe an average? If it makes a difference, my company does subcontract low voltage work. Thanks! moreResolved Question: Where can I Find Reliable Cheap Life Insurance Quotes?

1 year in business w/30 years experience. We have no employees just two owners doing the work. Only one vehicle. @ $200,000 in business a year. We were quoted $17,000.00 for a $4 mill umbrella. This sounds extremely high to me. moreResolved Question: Are HMO rates for Blue Care Network cheaper if I go through an association or chamber of commerce?
I live in Michigan and want to buy an HMO plan with Blue Care Network. I have gotten quotes from an insurance agency, but wonder if the quotes would be lower for the same plan if I go through (1) another agency OR (2) a business/professional association (like the Small Business Assocation) or a chamber of commerce. I read that rates for HMO's are somewhat regulated in the state and HMOs can consider only age, industry, and group size when figuring their rates. Wouldn't an association or chamber qualify for lower rates because their group size would be larger? Would another insurance agency be able to give me a lower quote for the same plan? And are the rates negotiable? Thanks for your reply Zarnev. Would your answer be different if I told you that I am an employer and the quotes that I have are for group HMO plans and not individual plans? You are an independent insurance agent in AZ - are the rules/laws/regs in AZ similar to MI, especially for HMO's? moreResolved Question: What is the cost of general liability insurance for a small business?

My husband and I work together out of our home. For all intents and purposes, we have formed a small business of Internet marketing through ClickBank, an affiliate marketing system. However, although I work for/with him daily, we have not incorporated in any way and all involved paperwork is in his name only. We want to start a family, and the only way for maternity to be covered in Texas is through a group health insurance plan. What paperwork would we need to prove that we are indeed a small company with 2 employees and not two people trying to scam the system? If you don't know the answer to the question, but you do know the best place to find the answer, please let us know that instead. I don't think I want to fill out quote paperwork because that just leads to a thousand calls a day, but I also don't think a lawyer would be the person to contact. moreResolved Question: How do you try to remain calm in stressful situations while pregnant?
Ok here's whats going on with my job right now: I work at a small insurance agency, just the boss, me, and another woman. Business is super slow right now. The boss can barely pay the bills and she gave us our paychecks today and warned us they may bounce. Also the boss is bipolar and is in a very very very bad low right now. She expects us to call random people out of the phone book and do quotes, but we just get hung up on so or told "no thanks" so she tells us we're not trying hard enough. The other woman is thinking about quitting leaving only me, and I know the boss won't hire anyone new to replace her. She won't let us turn the furnace up past 63 (and it's 4 degrees outside!) She bought us each an electric heater but the building is old and the windows are very drafty and our offices are very very large so the heaters don't help much. I can't afford to go out and buy a bunch of warm clothes, especially since i need to start buying maternity clothes. I hoping to buy new pants this weekend that fit because my belly is growing, but if my paycheck bounces, I'm screwed! And I hate to say it but the only thing keeping me going is knowing that if the office goes out of business, I can get unemployment! I have bad days too but I always try to stay optimistic and keep a smile on my face but it's getting really really hard to do right now...like this morning, I was up at 4 a.m. trying to thaw our pipes and then i got the worst morning sickness I've ever had (honestly! I cried it was so bad!) and then my step-daughter threw a temper tantrum that went on and off for about an hour, but i still managed to come in with a smile on my face. Looking for a new job is out of the question. Before I was pregnant, I'd say it's the perfect cocktail night, but that's obviously out of the question tonight. Any advice to try to stay sane? moreVoting Question: Why are Americans (Republicans especially) so opposed to taxes?
The United States citizens pay the lowest taxes per percentage of income out of every industrialized, modern country in the world and yet we also poll as the most unhappy about it while European countries paying a much larger portion of their salaries in taxes are actually happier about it. In many countries it is tantamount to political suicide to even suggest lower taxes. Why is this? Because people in Europe and other modernized countries actually see their taxes at work. They have government paid health insurance, government subsidized higher education, infrastructure that is being constantly improved and modernized (the under-taking of that construction here would lead to millions of jobs across the nation as UNION laborers went to work building roads, highways, rails and more) , maternity programs that actually allow both the mother AND father to take time off from work (while being paid and having job security for up to a year, not the unpaid 12 weeks that we Americans have),welfare programs, security in retirement, and unemployment.... I could go on and on about the benefit of WISELY spent high taxes. Government's job is to provide and protect. How is it supposed to efficiently do that with empty pockets? If I had to pay higher taxes, but my schooling was more heavily subsidized and my health care was free, not only would feel happier and more secure, I also wouldn't miss too much of the upfront cash that I would have had with lower taxes. Why? The money I save by having lower taxes seems to come right out of my pocket towards those programs anyway. As far as those that would claim government bureaucracy and inefficiency, can you imagine the negotiating and buying power 300 million united people would have against the over-sized, over-paid, and over-subsidized corporations that we are all so upset with due to the U.S.'s current economic situation? Cost of prescriptions would plummet because the pharmaceutical corporations would no longer be able to artificially inflate the cost of medicine, many more of our children would have the ability to compete on a global scale due to the easier access to education we could empower them with, even our business's could benefit from a modern infrastructure designed to move consumer goods more efficiently across our country. For those of you who would imply that the government would not be responsible with the extra money, I agree. It wouldn't work with the system as it is in play now. Too many corporations and "big" businesses have influence among our government. However, the idea that politicians are all, at heart, morally corrupt and could not wisely spend that money are anti-American. Why? Because there are plenty of countries in the world (almost all of the modern, industrialized countries we recognize as successful) whose citizens pay high taxes and whose governments provide socialized benefits. So in essence what you are saying is that the American politician is more corrupt than say a French one or Russian politician perhaps. A recent quote seems to sum it up pretty appropriately. To paraphrase... The argument of small government vs. big government is, at this point, childish and pedantic. The real question should be, is the government working or not? moreResolved Question: How much does commercial vehicle insurance cost with Geico?
I'm in the Business Professionals of America club and myself along with three other club members are participating in the Small Business Management competition. The scenario is that we have to start and manage a limousine business in Denver, Colorado (we live in houston, texas). We are trying to go all the way with this and so details are very crucial. One of them is commercial insurance. I have tried contacting Geico for insurance quotes, but they want me to give out information that I simply don't feel comfortable distributing since the business is artificial and I am not of age. Can any one give me an estimate or direct me to one? Here's the information: - Four vehicles: 2 regular SUV's, 1 regular stretch limousine & 1 Hummer limousine -The location is 80202 (Downtown Denver, Colorado) *If you have any other information whether it's a recommendation to another insurance company or whatever that WILL be much appreciated. Thanks! moreResolved Question: Editing help......???
If you have a few minutes to spare, could anyone please, please help me edit my paper. For many years, people have been debating how medical insurance should be paid: Whether private payment or government payment or some combination. Private payment means one would pay for ones own insurance. Government payment would mean the government pays for ones insurance. If the government were to pay for ones insurance, it would limit ones abilities. Also, Government already has to cover Medicare, Social Security, Government housing, the Federal Housing Committee, and the collapse of the Financial Institutions. To a lot of thoughtful people, the only way to fix the health insurance crisis in the United States is to get the federal government to cover everyone. In most states, individuals can be denied coverage for any number of reasons, so it is wise to request and compare more than one individual health insurance quote. The extra short-term effort that's required to apply for individual medical insurance plans is easily worth the long-term savings. If one is insuring ones family, as opposed to just oneself, there are some additional considerations to take into account. Even if one does receive coverage through an employer-sponsored health plan, one should consider the cost-saving benefits of switching to a family medical insurance policy or moving some of your family members off of your group policy into a family policy. Most Americans receive their health coverage through some type of group health insurance. Although large corporations with hundreds or even thousands of employees have the bargaining power to negotiate with medical insurance companies for custom health plans for their workers, the small business owner must still research options and compare prices from multiple providers. Since small business health insurance offers guaranteed coverage to all employees in a given company, it can be difficult and time consuming for a small business owner to find the best policy. Most major colleges and universities require their full-time students to have medical insurance. While many of these same schools also offer their own student health plan, it is wise to explore his or her options. Typically the school will provide the minimum requirements that a health policy must meet in order to waive coverage under the school's policy. As a senior over 65, one is likely covered under some combination of Medicare plans. Changes in recent years to the federal government's medical insurance program for seniors has created a complex system with rigid enrollment timelines. Currently, we have a mixed system, where the government heavily intervenes in health care. In Canada and Great Britain, they have fully governmental health care systems, but a black market of private medicine exists. The government regulates which drugs are available on the market, through the FDA and through the agencies that fight its War on Drugs. Currently, drug companies are granted monopoly privileges called "patents" that give them the exclusive right to sell their drug for 17 years. A few years ago, Congress passed legislation which actually outlawed the importation of cheaper drugs from other countries and prohibited the federal government's health insurance programs (such as Medicare and Medicaid) from negotiating for lower prices. This provision was repealed by the Democrats after they won control of Congress. Britain, Canada, Japan and a number of other rich countries do so, and they each spend less money on health care than the United States does. They also do not have major companies, like General Motors, flirting with bankruptcy in large part because of the cost of health benefits Health insurers made $100 billion in profits last year, and industries of that size are just not legislated out of business, said Jonathan Gruber, an economist. The party that controls the White House and Congress also opposes the idea. Republicans have their own utopian notions, which generally involve letting loose the free market for Americans to demand better care on their own. The discussion has basically been paralyzed for years. In the meantime, the problem has grown worse. In the United States, forty-six million people lack health insurance, according to the most recent estimate, up from thirty-one million in 1987. Massachusetts changed the terms of the debate. Governor Mitt Romney, a Republican, and the State Legislature, controlled by the Democrats, reached a deal to cover almost everyone in the state. The plan will cut the cost of health insurance for families that do not have it and make it free for many poor families. The state will also require every resident to have insurance or face a stiff fine. The plan breaks free of the usual ideological shackles by dealing with both of the big reasons that nearly one- sixth of the U.S. population lacks insurance. One, many people cannot afford it. Two, some who can afford it imagin moreResolved Question: Did Obama wow you last night? ?
Well hopefully your eyes were opened to his deceitfulness: WASHINGTON – Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was less than upfront in his half-hour commercial Wednesday night about the costs of his programs and the crushing budget pressures he would face in office. Obama's assertion that "I've offered spending cuts above and beyond" the expense of his promises is accepted only by his partisans. His vow to save money by "eliminating programs that don't work" masks his failure throughout the campaign to specify what those programs are — beyond the withdrawal of troops from Iraq. A sampling of what voters heard in the ad, and what he didn't tell them: THE SPIN: "That's why my health care plan includes improving information technology, requires coverage for preventive care and pre-existing conditions and lowers health care costs for the typical family by $2,500 a year." THE FACTS: His plan does not lower premiums by $2,500, or any set amount. Obama hopes that by spending $50 billion over five years on electronic medical records and by improving access to proven disease management programs, among other steps, consumers will end up saving money. He uses an optimistic analysis to suggest cost reductions in national health care spending could amount to the equivalent of $2,500 for a family of four. Many economists are skeptical those savings can be achieved, but even if they are, it's not a certainty that every dollar would be passed on to consumers in the form of lower premiums. ___ THE SPIN: "I also believe every American has a right to affordable health care." THE FACTS: That belief should not be confused with a guarantee of health coverage for all. He makes no such promise. Obama hinted as much in the ad when he said about the problem of the uninsured: "I want to start doing something about it." He would mandate coverage for children but not adults. His program is aimed at making insurance more affordable by offering the choice of government-subsidized coverage similar to that in a plan for federal employees and other steps, including requiring larger employers to share costs of insuring workers. ___ THE SPIN: "I've offered spending cuts above and beyond their cost." THE FACTS: Independent analysts say both Obama and Republican John McCain would deepen the deficit. The nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates Obama's policy proposals would add a net $428 billion to the deficit over four years — and that analysis accepts the savings he claims from spending cuts. The nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, whose other findings have been quoted approvingly by the Obama campaign, says: "Both John McCain and Barack Obama have proposed tax plans that would substantially increase the national debt over the next 10 years." The analysis goes on to say: "Neither candidate's plan would significantly increase economic growth unless offset by spending cuts or tax increases that the campaigns have not specified." ___ THE SPIN: "Here's what I'll do. Cut taxes for every working family making less than $200,000 a year. Give businesses a tax credit for every new employee that they hire right here in the U.S. over the next two years and eliminate tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. Help homeowners who are making a good faith effort to pay their mortgages, by freezing foreclosures for 90 days. And just like after 9-11, we'll provide low-cost loans to help small businesses pay their workers and keep their doors open. " THE FACTS: His proposals — the tax cuts, the low-cost loans, the $15 billion a year he promises for alternative energy, and more — cost money, and the country could be facing a record $1 trillion deficit next year. Indeed, Obama recently acknowledged — although not in his commercial — that: "The next president will have to scale back his agenda and some of his proposals." moreResolved Question: Did anyone see Barack Obama's 30 minute presentation on television Wednesday night? ?

Obama was born to a Muslim father, he had a Muslim grandfather, he was raised by a Muslim step father, taught as a boy in a Muslim school, tutored by a man who was a sexual pervert and socialist during his early boyhood, attended the church Wright pastored which had many Muslim members, has been praised by Quaddafi and Hamas - Muslim terrorists, and in an absent-minded moment on tv slipped and said "My Muslim faith." Hi, I am thinking of setting up a dog walking business to get a little extra cash, excercise and experience with animals as I wish to get into a career with dogs. I have got a few quotes for public liability insurance etc. and am now researching the tax side of everything. I have been told that I must contribute taxes and NI on any money I get but I am useless with numbers and I am pretty sure I wont be earning more that £50 a week maximum so wont be able to afford to hire someone to go over my tax return forms. Is it really complicated to set up this business tax wise or will the tax office help me through (free of charge)? Do I have to report to the tax office monthly or yearly? I am pretty sure that the tax office are pretty unforgiving of mistakes and don't take ignorance as an excuse... so any advice would be great. I am starting a small business. I'm going to rent electric cars (GEM Cars) to local visitors in my very touristy Florida area. I WILL NOT OWN THESE CARS... I am leasing them from another company. So I'm not looking for insurance for the actual cars, but a higher level business insurance and liabiity insurance. (I think?) My actual business will have no major assets (I will ease the cars, office space and all equiptment) I have no idea what type of insurance policy and coverage I would need to ensure my liability coverage. Can anyone provide some assistance on the types of policy and coverages I will need? Also, any ideas on what companies, brokers/agents would be able o quote me or sell the policy? Thanks!!! - The other question I have is, does the third party company that I am leasing these cars from have any exposure to the actions of my rental buisness? moreResolved Question: Who is liable for leaks/plumbing issues in rental situations for businesses if the issue is known and unfixed?
Hey guys, I need a little help here on how to handle a situation. My landlord (basically a slum lord in the St Louis area) rented me a huge storefront that had sat empty for years. There are apartments above the storefront, and I use the storefront for storage and some work space. The building is more than 100 years old itself, so it needs extensive repair. When I moved in, I was told by the maintainance man as well as the property manager at the time that there was leaks in the building but that they were fixed and it was fine now. I could see the signs of the leaks down the wall in the back of the store, and I had to do extensive cleaning on the storefront before I could move in. I sell books online, and we are exclusively online, we have no customers that ever come to our storefront/warehouse/storage area. Yesterday, I came to work and found that a large amount of my stock had been damaged by a leaking pipe. This is the fourth pipe that has had issues since I moved in two years ago, but until now my inventory hadn't been affected. The landlord is well aware of the situation, and has been told by two different plumbers that this old building needs new plumbing immediately, and that they could go at any time, but he refuses to fix it. My financial situation has kept me here, I can't afford to move my stock out because I'm getting the place very cheap, about half of what a similarly sized building would cost me in the same area (since nobody else would rent it!), and I can't afford renter's or small business insurance either due to the building itself and the type of business I own. My question is this: who's liable for the damage to my inventory in this situation if the pipes burst and the place is flooded? I've been told two different stories by two different people, the original maintainance man told me that the landlord was responsible because he knows of the situation and has been advised multiple times to get it fixed as well as lying to me upon me moving in and telling me there was no further problems with the plumbing, but another person (a property manager) told me that he wasn't and it would be my responsibility to get renter's insurance, which was going to cost me a huge amount of money according to a couple of quotes that I received. My father is undergoing cancer treatment in Houston for a rare form of cancer, and that's eating up all of my free money, driving back and forth between St Louis and Houston, and it's just been hell dealing with this worry of my business and his health as well as taking care of my wife and son on top of it. Any advice you could give would be SO greatly appreciated! moreVoting Question: MA Small business required costs for insurance. To hard to find quotes.?

I am a small business owner with 2 bakery cafes in Orange County, California. I want to purchase Employment Practices Liability Insurance. I have 2 quotes and must decide on either the $500K limit policy or pay an extra $2400/Yr. for the $1M limit policy. I don't want to overinsure and pay for extra coverage needlessly. I am told by the broker that over 90% of claims are of the nuisance variety and go away within a few months. The defense costs for these are around $10K-$25K. However, the attorney's average cost if one of these went to trial would be between $250K-$300K, with the balance left for the judgement if lost the trial. The estimated value of the 2 cafes is $2M and is a S-Copration. Any advice or referral is appreciated. Thanks. moreResolved Question: Can't believe what the insurance company say ...?

Case study “The Rock” is an established outdoor activity camp specially aimed at children between the ages of 10 – 16. The Camp is operated by the Local Council at Barryville – a small town located very close to the beach and with access to mountain trails for hiking and bike riding. There are many business “transactions” that occur at “The Rock”. Three are given below: Transaction 1: A child attending the camp suffered an injury. “The Rock” paid $9,000 for the child’s medical care as the camp had no insurance. The owners of the camp now wish to take out insurance to avoid such a large payout in the future. The owners presently have a number of quotes, the cheapest being $2,000. This is in the form of an invoice from “Insure Your Camp Pty Ltd”. Transaction 2: “The Rock” donated some old equipment (which was said to be worth $4,000) to the local charity for homeless youth. Transaction 3: The father of a child attending “The Rock” is a medical practitioner. “The Rock” allows this child to attend camp in return for the father’s serving part-time in the camp sick bay for one week. The standard fee for a camp term is $1,000. The doctor’s salary for this part-time work would be $1,000. coragryph explain how when you said no one is above the law yet your claim has some problems. Please explain why those laws can be broken without worry of punishment, fines, jail time. Just when you thought our government couldn’t sink any lower in the dereliction of their duty to protect this nation and uphold our laws, you get an e-mail from a reader with a link to this… If you’re caught with two pounds of pot that you plan to sell, plan on going to jail for up to seven years. With 500 pounds, you can kiss your completely freedom goodbye. But head down to Southern Arizona, near the border, do the exact same thing, and in many cases you get off scott-free. No prosecution, no penalty, no prison…in fact - not even a slap on the hand. County prosecutors say it’s enormously frustrating and for the drug cartels, enormously profitable. But this sweet deal only applies if you’re illegal and smuggling 500-pounds or less. And therein lies one of our country’s dirty little secrets: Mexican drug runners getting a free pass back to Mexico if they’re caught with less than a quarter-ton of pot. Cochise County attorney Ed Rheinheimer spells it out. “If a seizure is made of an amount less than 500 pounds, the case doesn’t get prosecuted.” You read that right. Drug runners doing business without punishment. But don’t blame the county attorneys. Remember: These are federal cases and should be federally prosecuted. But guess what? They don’t get prosecuted by the feds and now, they don’t get prosecuted by guys like Ed Rheinheimer, either. “Since 2003 we stopped prosecuting federal referrals because of a lack of resources.” [snip] And while these “weight limits” are unfamiliar to most Americans - drug cartels know them well and plan accordingly. Sergeant Terry Parish warehouses the seizures. We walked through store rooms holding marijuana from floor to ceiling. Lisa Fletcher: “How many of these guys do you think are aware of this sort of unspoken rule that if you’ve got less than 500 pounds, you’re probably not going to get prosecuted?” “I think probably more of them are aware of it than individual officers are. Their intelligence is very good, it’s what they do for a living.” And they do it every night…all along Arizona’s border. War on drugs? Don’t make me laugh. This a full frontal assault on the American citizen and our society. Think I’m wrong? Well, consider this, it seems George Orwell’s famous quote, “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” has never been more accurate than it is in America today. Is it any wonder Americans are outraged over the current illegal immigration situation? While our government winks and nods at Mexico, we’ve watched as illegal immigrants are afforded more and more rights in our society than American citizens - American citizens who happen to get stuck with the bill to pay for all of this generosity and are hauled off to prison if we dare to think of breaking any of the laws that illegal aliens receive a free pass for breaking. Our rewards for being Americans and legal American citizens are higher taxes, higher crime rates, lower wages, higher insurance premiums and on and on while illegal aliens are rewarded for their crimes against our borders and our society with: Free health care - U.S. taxpayers pay the medical bills for illegal aliens yet the cost of most American’s monthly health insurance premium for even a small family has now exceeded their monthly mortgage payment and if we fail to pay for our insurance and need medical care, our home will have to be sold to cover the costs. The right to be above the law - Illegal aliens can hide in ’sanctuary cities’ that say, “we care more about the rights of criminal aliens than the rights of our own citizens” yet American criminals are not afforded a place to hide, in fact, they are hunted down. In-state tuition - Senators Hillary Clinton, Dick Durbin, and other members of our Congress are proud sponsors of the illegal dream yet American children have to pay more for their college tuition than their illegal counterparts as some states have already implemented in-state tuition for illegal aliens in direct violation of our federal law. Day laborer centers - American taxpayers fund illegal day laborer centers yet there are no ‘gathering places’ being built for unemployed American workers. No ID necessary - “The stigma and humiliation of constantly proving lawful status is unacceptable”, says the ACLU yet Americans are expected to show 2 forms of verifiable ID to obtain a driver’s license. Fair share of Katrina disaster aid - Hillary Clinton - defender of the illegal alien, made sure that illegal aliens got their ‘fair share’ of the Katrina disaster aid paid for courtesy the American taxpayer. Using our courts to see that crime pays - 2 illegal immigrants won an Arizona ranch in court. Do you think an American trespasser could get that lucky in court? Turning our sense of right and wrong on its head - The Minuteman Project and other anti-illegal immigration groups are targeted as bands of racists and even called ‘vigilantes’ by our President and ‘bigots’ by a member of the U.S. Senate. Americans who are trying to help the border patrol, because of our government’s total disregard for the citizens of this nation, are rewarded by being vilified by the very officials failing to live up to the office they occupy. In this topsy-turvy world, criminals are now accepted as the victim and law-abiding citizens are handed the bill and openly accused of racism if they disagree. Or arrested if they dare to protest. Our Border Patrol agents languish in prisons while known drug smugglers are given immunity. And now, American citizens can expect to face prison time for small amounts of marijuana while illegal aliens can possess a quarter of a ton - and bring it across an international border - with absolutely no ramifications? Orwell was right, “Some animals (and people) ARE more equal than others”. coragryph, tell me why are these people above the law when you clearly said nobody was or is above the law. I am 20 yrs old, I need commercial auto insurance for two trucks. Isuzu NPR-HD's one new, one used. (2007 New, 2001 w/177K) both at 14,500 gvw. the trucks are small and the business idea is simple. Haul away peoples unwanted stuff to the dump, but the insurance won't cover me. Anywhere. I've been told to try to find a start up insurance company to take a gamble on me, how do I find one? What else can I do? Please advise. I recently got a quote MUCH lower than previous ones, but the insurance agent, I think, doesn't understand exactly what I will be doing. He knows I have a construction business, but thats it, I didn't clue him in on hauling stuff to the dump. Is this legal? Should I get the insurance through this guy? He is ten times less than everyone else!! Thanks!!!I just want to be legal on the road. I don't care about anything else. moreResolved Question: i need fire insurance quotes for a project?
its a small business and this isnt a real restaurant moreResolved Question: Would corporate auto insurance be less expensive/cost effective than personal/consumer auto insurance?
As per my other question, I'm looking to start a brokerage. Therefore, I would be in control of my own small business. I would assume that it would be a sole-proprietorship (and then later LLC or full out corporation). Now, I am also fairly young (let's say 20) and male. I live in NJ, but I might be able to get residency in NC because of school. I'm not looking for a specific quote but a generalization. With that being said, if I purchased a car would it be cheaper to: ---Buy the car under my name and insure it myself? OR ---Purchase the car through the company I start and have it insured through corporate insurance and register me as a driver? Thanks in advance.Let's just say that personal auto insurance for me would range from $3000 to $15000 depending on the car. I'm unsure of the cost of corporate insurance with one car and one registered driver. I'd have my own policy in my own name either way.The business would not be a sham. Also, as I was looking at some cars, I saw that you could right off practically the entire cost of the car as a tax write-off if used as a business vehicle. I believe it was a Range Rover, and it was on Land Rover's website where I saw this. But, yes, I guess I had better look into getting other types of insurance as well. I have another question concerning starting the brokerage and wanted to separate this question from that. I figured I had better start young. moreResolved Question: Which insurance companies should I look at to insure an employee doing service work in people's houses?
I am starting a company and will have one sub-contracted employee (1099) doing service work (fixing computers) in people's houses and small business offices. What could I expect to pay to make sure if he breaks anything or whatever it's all insured? Also, which companies would you recommend to get quotes from? moreResolved Question: Insurance For Small 3 Door car?
