RealNetworks To Spin Off Its Game Business; Considering IPO

Rafat is reporting over on our sister site PaidContent.org that RealNetworks (NSDQ: RNWK) says it will spin-off its global casual games business into an independent company by the end of the year. The company is looking at two scenarios: distributing shares of the new company to shareholders, or complete an IPO and sell up to 20 percent of the new company's shares. Rafat's writes: "RealNetworks is finally doing the rationalization of its business lines."

Q: What have you seen or heard about what to expect with the defensive line rotation of Tank Johnson and Jay Ratliff?

William Carrick, La Quinta, Calif.

TAYLOR: Ratliff will start, and Johnson will get much of the playing time on third down and nickel situations. I'm sure he'll also get some first- and second-down repetitions. The idea is to keep both guys healthy and fresh for one of the most demanding positions on the field.

Q: The problem I have with Patrick Crayton is he doesn't seem to get it. I can live with the dropped passes. He talks so much trash for a mediocre player. Every time there is a big game, he runs his mouth. Why aren't other players policing him in the locker room? Do you sense he has grown up and will shut his mouth this season?

George McCabe, New York

TAYLOR: Who says he has to shut up? Just because you don't like his approach or I think he should tone it down doesn't really matter. more

Resolved Question: Microsoft Office 07 Small Business Edition?

Where can I buy a copy of this that has the licenses so it can be installed on 20 machines. more

Voting Question: Is this a legal contract?

I am a small business owner and last year I decided to get a credit card machine. I called to cancel the services as my business is no longer open and the rep on the phone said I had signed a 3 year contract so if I wanted to cancel it would cost me $500. I never remember signing anything so I asked if they could send me a copy of the contract. I got the "contract" in the mail. It's not a contract but an application. There in no starting date on it, no signature from me, and it says nothing about a $500 cancellation fee. Although it does say it's a 36 month lease. My question is....is this legally binding? I do understand that it says a 36 month lease but there is nothing about a cancellation fee. I am lost when it comes to this so any help is appreciated. Thank you. They have my bank account info since the money from the credit cards get directly deposited. I am worried that they will just take the $500 from my account and I won't be able to get it back. more

Resolved Question: What do you need for a small business office to look "lived in"?

I have a small business with an office space that our team uses, although not more than 1-2 times a week. Some investors are coming to visit, and the expectation is that our office looks like a full-time "typical" working office. We normally operate with "what we need" (ie our own laptops, necessary office supplies, and some "ad hoc" copying/printing gear). I can see we need more to impress these investors. Thus far I have procured a lease on a commercial photocopy machine, some basic supplies (pens, pencils, paper, paperclips, etc...), and a full complement of furniture... I am concerned with the "little things" that I may have missed that investors will notice. Any thoughts? more

Voting Question: Its a Firewall Exercise Pls get me the answers for 10 questions?

Setting up a firewall configuration for a small business A small company with computer resources consisting of a Ubuntu server and a Windows server, a group of desktops and laptops requests a network setup and firewall configuration that will provide more security and control. Two machines will be used as firewalls. They have decided on a network topology where the laptops and desktops are placed in the same subnet, but they are separated by a level two bridge. This makes it possible to install a stealth firewall on this bridge. (Conviniently the topology is equal to your virtual network, except for the bridge, so you need to change this for your virtual network.) In addition theywant a web based graphical logging of the amount of connections to their site. Installing server and client software In order to make the network more realistic and thereby also testing the firewall setup, you shall start by installing somserver software. It is a good idea to install the software and make sure it works before you start implementing the firewalls. apache2 on Ubuntu Stop and remove the apache server running at the gateway, you should not run a webserver at your gateway. Next install apache2 on server1. If you are not able to sudo su on some of the VM’s, try just su and the same password. Installation is straightforward: server1 # apt-get install apache2 Then you enter the following (apt-get install nano (or jed) if you need an editor, use copy and paste) in the file /var/www/index.html <h1>Server1: Ubuntu webserver at 10.0.0.4</h1> 1 Entering 10.0.0.4 in Firefox at the gateway, this text you entered should pop up if everything is correct. apache2 onWindows XP Next you should do the same on server2, the Windows server. Google for ‘apache install Windows’ or follow the instructions at http://www.ricocheting.com/server/apache.html. It ismost strightforward if you download the selfextracting msi-file. Use version 2.2.6 or newer. Enter your email-adress when asked. After finishing the installation, choose Config Apache Server and edit config file from the Start-menu and enter the IP-address 10.0.0.3 as ServerName (No name is obviously registered in DNS for this host). If you enter 10.0.0.3 in firefox at the gateway, you should now be able to see the text ’It works’. Try to find out how to change it to a similar text as server1. (Hint: C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\htdocs\index.html) Munin at server1 The Ubuntu Web-server should run Munin in order to enable you to generate a web-GUI with statistics from the two firewalls. You need just the Munin master node on server1 which you install by apt-get install munin Next you edit the file /etc/munin/munin.confand the only change you need there is to add [gateway.vm] address 10.0.0.1 use_node_name yes [choke.vm] address 10.0.0.2 use_node_name yes which makes Munin collect data from gateway and choke. At the choke (and gateway, but there you have probably already installed it) you just install munin-node which collects data for the Munin master by apt-get install munin-node and here you can write plugins and stop and start the munin-node. At the bottom of /etc/munin/munin-node.conf on both the choke and the gateway you need to add 2 allow ^10\.0\.0\.4$ and restart munin-node in order to allow server1 to collect data from the munin-nodes. You should now be able to see data from both the gateway and the choke if you from the gateway browse at 10.0.0.4/munin. Later you will receive more instructions on the plugins you should write. Remote Desktop Server at server2 This server is already running and should continue to run. MySQL on desktop and server1 In the real case the webservers retrives some of their content from a common database, a MySQL-server running on server1. However, the company does not want to have their database containing some sensitive data in the DMZ. So another MySQL-server is running on the Desktop-machine (10.0.2.2) inside the LAN.However, don’t do the installation of these databases, just pretend they are installed. You are not supposed to set up more services than those mentioned here. When MySQL, samba and other services are mentioned later, pretend they are present in the network. Network Policy The employee working in the company in charge of the project does not have an education in networking, but he is able to give a rough description of their desired network policy. • Everything that is not specified will be dropped. • The laptops and desktops may surf the Internet, but the servers may not. • SSH access to the internal choke firewall machine is only allowed from the server1 and the desktops. The gateway of the site will allow incoming ssh connections from the Internet and the desktops only. • The laptops are allowed to access the samba (SMB) server on the d more

Resolved Question: Tough one here, XP install related - need true guru.?

I have a machine that will not allow me to install windows xp. As a background, i have multiple microsoft MCP certs, i have done thousands of OS installs using every microsoft product from windows 3.11 through vista premium 64bit. I was using this as a second home PC, used mainly in the bedroom to watch DVDs and access the internet or play games if someone else is on our primary PC. XP home was installed and running fine until I upgraded the CPU from celeronD 2.66Ghz (single core) to P4 2.8Ghz HT (xp and vista see this as a dual-core cpu). I started getting random shut-downs. No warning, no BSOD, just reboots. I made sure BIOS was configured to enable HT. That didn't help. Using monitoring software, CPU temps were at the lower end of the normal range as I have a great cooling setup in this case. I try to get this CPU above 54C (well within P4 operating temps) and can't no matter how many apps/games I try to run at one time. I then figured it was the single core HAL needing to be changed to the dual core/hyperthreading HAL. No problem. Instead of simply trying to update or copy and replace the existing file, I decided to do a clean install. Using the same OS install CD-ROM, a retail upgrade version of XP Home, I run setup and format the C: Drive. Everything is going fine until I try to copy files. Certain files (approx 30 in all) won't copy no matter what I do. I thought maybe my disk had small scratches, but I took it to MMX and they cleaned it and it is better looking than many 'new' cd's or dvd's I have seen. I try install again and the same 30 files won't copy correctly. Ok, maybe it's just a bad disk. Lets try a little trick. I allow it to install to 100% (obviously, less the files that wouldn't copy). Windows setup has to quit in the GUI portion because Shell32 didn't copy correctly. Well, maybe since setup is trying to run, we can repair the install. I took out another XP install DVD (this time) and attempted to repair my current installation. Everything fine until it trys to copy certain files. IT'S THE SAME FILES THAT WON'T COPY. I'm not guessing, I had made a list of the files that wouldn't copy off of the CD and it matched exactly with the files that wouldn't copy using the DVD. This can't be a problem with a bad CD-Rom or DVD-Rom. I even tried switching out the DVD burner for a CD-RW drive instead. It's definately not a media or drive issue. I have run memtest with both 1 and 2 sticks present and get no errors. I have tried disabling HT'ing in the bios and still get the same results. Any true PC Guru's out there that have successfully dealt with this problem. I have seen others post questions regarding problems with XP refusing to copy files, but the answers given were usually clean the disk, get a new OS cd-rom, check BIOS, check RAM, etc... the things that I have already done. I am in a somewhat unique position due to the fact that I have licensed copies of Win95, Win98, Win2k (all versions including server and advanced server), XP home, XP media center, Vista 32 HB (also gets disk copy errors when i try to install on this PC), Vista Business premium, and Vista Home Premium 64. My MOBO shipped from the factory listing the CPU that I upgraded to as supported. I am at wit's end here.hdd was fine before the cpu upgrade. never had problem with crashes or memory/paging errors, etc... added note, i realize that my new cpu uses slightly more power than the old one, but my MOBO calls for 350watt power supply for a fully loaded system i am using a thermaltake 480watt power supply with 2 fans, one of which the speed is controlled externally by a knob that sits on a pci slot insert (although not designed for huge powerhungry GPU's, it's a killer power supply. my 1.5v 6600GT never caused problems before and PS had power to spare). again, never had any problems with this PC, not one using exactly the same sticks of RAM, same GPU, same HDD, everything exactly the same except the CPU. I am going to try and pull the battery to reset cmos settings and let it autodetect all, even though i don't think that will help anything. maybe stupid mcafee put something on to prevent a virus hijacking a HDD. if so, it still allows you to fdisk it and format it, just not reinstalloh, and can't flash bios as can't get OS to load. most newer bios are software based and run from windows application. more

Resolved Question: help with case study?

S Ltd manufacturers and sells lifting equipment. B Ltd operates a heavy goods vehicle servicing and repair business. On 1 July 2008 B Ltd requested a copy of S Ltd’s brochure and this was sent by post and received by B Ltd on 3 July 2008. Tom was the managing director for B Ltd. He read the brochure and selected a “Hercules” hydraulic jack system for lifting heavy goods vehicles and was priced in the brochure at £28,000. He completed the order form contained in the brochure and entered the company’s credit card details. He then, signed, dated and sent the form to S Ltd together with a covering letter that stated “Please note that all orders are submitted subject to B Ltd’s terms and conditions, a copy of which is enclosed.” S Ltd sent a letter to B Ltd thanking them for their order and specifying that the ‘Hercules’ would be manufactured and delivered to B Ltd on 31 August 2008 at the listed price of £28,000. The ‘Hercules’ hydraulic jack was delivered to B Ltd on 30 August 2008, together with an invoice for £30,000 which was stated to be payable in full in 30 days. On receiving the invoice Tom telephoned and queried the price, stating that he had agreed a price of £28,000. He was told that S Ltd’s costs had increased and the company use a clause in the company’s terms stating that: “S Ltd reserves the right to increase the price of goods supplied by a maximum of 10%.” Max pointed out that the clause was included in the terms and conditions on the website. Tom hung up and checked S Ltd’s terms on its website and found that one clause did indeed contain the above wording. Tom was aware that B Ltd’s terms and conditions contained the following clause: “The contract price shall be that specified at the time of purchase. B Ltd will not accept any variation in the price after submission of an order.” After the machine was delivered to B Ltd it failed because a small pressure screw had not been correctly tightened during manufacture. B Ltd’s technician tightened the screw and the ‘Hercules’ is now in perfect working order. However B Ltd’s vehicle being worked on at the time sustained damage amounting to £3000. B Ltd’s terms and conditions state: “The seller is responsible for all damages that follow from defective products that they have supplied under contract to the buyer.” He then compared this with the S Ltd’s terms and conditions that state: “S Ltd hereby excludes liability for damage caused by defective machinery or products supplied by S Ltd.”i was just working thorught the question...i am having problem with summarising the facts of the case...can any of you guys help me with it please...if non of you guys mind...thank youtoo hard to choose the best answer...but ever thank you for your help...i will leave to you guys to choose the best answer...ill put it on vote...once again thanks alot more

Notes •Expansion Ports- Connect a Peripheral device to an expansion card. •RAM- Random Access Memory •What is RAM? Every time you start your operating system, launch a program, or open a file, the relevant program code and/or data is loaded into a RAM. That’s why you see RAM listed in the system requirements for the software you buy. If you have more RAM, you can open more files or programs at once and load bigger files. •RAM capacity is rated in terms of megabytes and gigabytes. •RAM is not permanent; when the computer is turned off; all information stored in RAM is lost. •ROM- Read only memory •ROM is a storage chip that typically contains hardwired instructions for use when a computer starts (boots up). The instructions—contained in a small program called the BIOS (basic input/output system)—load from ROM and start up the hard disk. •ROM is memory that you cannot erase or write on. •CMOS-Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor •CMOS is a special kind of memory maintained by battery after you turn the computer off. CMOS also maintains the internal clock. Every time you turn on your computer, the BIOS looks in CMOS for the settings you selected and configures your computer accordingly. •Input Hardware- Sends Data to RAM •Keyboard-The most common input device. •Mouse- A small palm sized input device that you move across a flat surface to control the movement of the pointer on a screen. •Trackball- A pointing device like a mouse only with the ball on the top of the device instead of the bottom. Resolved Question: Inflated resume, Is obama a liar?

Here’s Barack’s account: Eventually a consulting house to multinational corporations agreed to hire me as a research assistant. Like a spy behind enemy lines, I arrived every day at my mid-Manhattan office and sat at my computer terminal, checking the Reuters machine that blinked bright emerald messages from across the globe. As far as I could tell I was the only black man in the company, a source of shame for me but a source of considerable pride for the company’s secretarial pool. First, it wasn’t a consulting house; it was a small company that published newsletters on international business. Like most newsletter publishers, it was a bit of a sweatshop. I’m sure we all wished that we were high-priced consultants to multinational corporations. But we also enjoyed coming in at ten, wearing jeans to work, flirting with our co-workers, partying when we stayed late, and bonding over the low salaries and heavy workload. Barack worked on one of the company’s reference publications. Each month customers got a new set of pages on business conditions in a particular country, punched to fit into a three-ring binder. Barack’s job was to get copy from the country correspondents and edit it so that it fit into a standard outline. There was probably some research involved as well, since correspondents usually don’t send exactly what you ask for, and you can’t always decipher their copy. But essentially the job was copyediting. It’s also not true that Barack was the only black man in the company. He was the only black professional man. Fred was an African-American who worked in the mailroom with his son. My boss and I used to join them on Friday afternoons to drink beer behind the stacks of office supplies. That’s not the kind of thing that Barack would do. Like I said, he was somewhat aloof.  more

Resolved Question: How to find a cpa?

I spent about $8000 on my credit card for my company. Our company is small so we dont have a company CC. Reason why its expensive is because I bought a desktop, laptop ( to carry around with me to show clients ), copy/printer machine, a cell phone and other things that I need for this business. I told my boss that I will be buying this with my card, he said it was ok and that we have a CPA. Now, hes saying I need to get a CPA. I told him that dont we have a cpa and he said we do but it doesnt cover personal but only business. Will a CPA help me reimburse my bill for items that is only company related? or something else? I heard its $80 fee to meet a CPA.My employer said that if I show him the receipt and the transaction he will help me out but then he mentioned something about end of the year all at once with my cpa, I dont know what he meant. I just want the stuff I bought with my own card for business to be compensated. Or I will end up paying $7000 back for a long time since each month is interest goes up. more

Resolved Question: Is printing the account number on receipts legal in the state of Georgia?

I keep hearing from local friends and family in metro Atlanta that it is illegal for businesses to use credit card/atm card running machines that print the account number of the buyer on the receipt. When I shop at high end stores, dine at large chain or nicer restaurants the receipts only print the last four digits of my account number. However, when I frequent independently owned lower-end businesses such as family run nail shops, and mom n pop style chinese/mexican restaurants I've noticed -and so have my friends- that my full account number will be on the "store copy" of the receipt. I'm wondering if this is because smaller businesses are purchasing their card machines at auctions. Does anyone know where I can confirm the legality of account numbers on receipts in GA? Every time I catch it I fight with the shop because I refuse to allow them to keep the store copy receipt. I've also had my account number stolen this way. And, I've had tip amount changed twice. more

Resolved Question: Non Genuine Microsoft Product Installed Acer Direct (Laptops Direct)?

I was sold an Acer Aspire 5920 machine by Laptops Direct and asked for them to put Office Small Business 2007 OEM version on the machine. When I found out I couldn't download a Microsoft Word template because I had a Non-Genuine product, I got a little concerned. You may install one licensed copy of the software on three devices in your household. The software is not licensed for any commercial business activities, nonprofit business activities, or revenue-generating business activities. Microsoft themselves told me that the Product Id for the version of Microsoft Office on my machine is a retail one and doesn't match the product key. The company does not answer my emails and I can't get any sense out of their customer support "team". What should I do? more

Resolved Question: Does this purchase price sound reasonable for a small business?

I am looking to purchase a Dance Studio from a long time friend. They are asking $400,000 for the business. The average gross is around $400,000 per year. The annual expenses are as follows: Building lease: $32,000 Telephone: $6,000 Utilities: $8,000 Insurances: $9,000 Credit Card Services: $4,000 Copy machine rental: $6,000 Postage: $2,000 Supplies (office, cleaning, cartridge refills, misc.): $10,000 Payroll: $100,000 This means their is about $200,000 net profit. The sellers are willing to carry the note on this property. I would put $100,000 down and finance the $300,000 through them at 5%. They said they would do anywhere from 5 years to 25 years if I wanted. I believe they are really trying to help us take over thier business, as we have been helping them with it for about 20 years now. The business has a good name in the community. It sounds excellent to me, but wanted to run it by others. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: NEED TAX HELP! About Schedule C, business expenses...?

Hi! Ok, I am confused. Please help me with what expenses go in what catagories on the schedule C. Specifically, below: 1. "Office Expense" DOES THIS MEAN OFFICE SUPPIES LIKE COPIES, INK, PENCILS, ETC OR SPECIFICALLY OFFICE RENTAL?? 2. "Supplies" OR WOULD THIS MEAN THE PENCILS, PAPER, INK ETC? 3. "Equipment" WOULD THAT BE APPLIANCES BOTH LARGE AND SMALL LIKE A WHEEL BARROW, CD PLAYER, STEREO, ELECTRIC PENCIL SHARPENER, FAX MACHINE, ETC. 4. "Wages" I ONLY USE INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS, BUT I DO PAY THEM, WOULD THIS BE CONSIDERED WAGES OR CONTRACT LABOR? 5. "Contract Labor" WOULD THIS BE WAGES I PAY MY INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS, OR PEOPLE THAT I WOULD PAY TO DO SHORT TIME JOBS? (I only pay them as well on an independent contractor basis) It is important to know that I do not have any employees, just me, except my once inawhile independent contractors, which does fall under the legal definition of which. Also, what is the diff between cash & accural method? THANK YOU!!!! more

Resolved Question: Recommendation for a large format print/scan/copy machine?

Xerox 6204, KIP 3000 or Ricoh W240? We'd also consider the Oce, but its a bit pricier. Our printer output is around 7000 sf/month. We'd also like the ability to make large format copies and be able to scan to file. This printer would be on a Windows Small Business network of about 12 users. more

Resolved Question: Asking about weekend overtime pay?

Asking about weekend overtime pay --- Hi. I have been working for a copy company for 2 years. We have a scheduled weekend work so that every employee works on weekends 1 out of 5 weeks. Sometimes the workload is big, so management asks people who are not scheduled to work on weekends. They can refuse to work. I almost always say yes. A lot of times I work alone operating 5 copy machines, instead of 1. We are not paid overtime for a weekend work, unless its more then 80 hours per 2 week pay period. Sometimes we work only 75 hours for 2 week, so weekend work can add 5 more hours towards 80 hours of normal pay and I get 3 extra hours of overtime pay if I work 8 hours on weekend. But since I operate 5 machines and I am not scheduled to work on that weekend, I want my manager to give me overtime pay for every hour worked on a weekend. Besides this, the company owes me some unpaid break time which amounts to about $400, we both know it but I don't do anything hoping to get a compansation in another form, like accepting my weekend overtime pay proposition. What is the most ethical way to approach this negotiation? My communication and business ethics skills are not very good and I don't want to loose a career because of some small detail that I did wrong. Thank you. more
