Chamber of Commerce honours Etobicoke's business leaders

The Etobicoke Chamber of Commerce honoured seven of the best and brightest local business leaders at the 11th Annual Business Excellence Awards Gala dinner on March 17.

Naresh Bangia, president and CEO of AJB Software Design Inc., was named Business Person of the Year for the rapid expansion of his company from a single customer to an organization serving more than 132 of North America, the UK and Europe's first rate companies over its short, 14-year history.

"We were thrilled to be nominated and win," said Aleem Ulla, AJB's director of business development, on behalf of Bangia. "Naresh grew up in Etobicoke and lives here now, so he acknowledges what the Etobicoke community has done for him. He couldn't have done it without the people of Etobicoke."

Started in 1994 out of Bangia's basement with a vision to build simplified payment solution systems, AJB and its trademark Retail Transaction Switch (RTS) was born. more

Pacific, Eureka officials, volunteers working feverishly against flood

Aided by dozens of volunteers, local emergency and city officials are focusing on resident safety and doing what they can to protect homes and businesses as area rivers continue to rise.Flood waters from the Meramec and Big rivers have closed roads and forced many Eureka and Pacific residents out of their homes into local hotels, friends' or family's houses or to emergency shelters."Eureka has become four different islands," said Kate Moore, public information officer for the Eureka Fire Protection District. "We've got several areas that are completely shut off - Hoehne Springs (along Highway W), the Highway FF area, Highway 109 and Allenton. We encouraged people in those areas to leave, and most of them evacuated, but we've got about 10 people who just aren't going to go."Eureka firefighters already have been called to rescue several people who tried to drive through flooded areas, and Moore said emergency officials expect they'll be called out again before the flood waters recede late this weekend. Many times those rescues become a necessity because people try to drive or steer a boat through flood waters, Moore said."We try our best to warn people against it, but there are people who underestimate the force of the flood waters and who think their vehicle or their boat can get through," Moore said. more

Small Business Act Section 3 Questions asked

Resolved Question: How would you label me politically?

Just curious. Have been told lately that my hands-off positions on social issues make me conservative. 1. I'm strongly pro-gun. If I can't fight back I have no last-ditch defense against tyranny or abuse. I'll drop my gun when the last cop and the last criminals drop theirs, many thanks. 2. I'm strongly pro-choice. I believe in self-ownership. Thus, as long as something is an unwelcome host in your body you can throw it out. 3. I'm strongly against censorship. Free speech means free speech, I won't buy onto none of that "decency" BS. Burn the FCC. I'm not offended either by hardcore conservative propaganda or BDSM porn. in primetime. If I don't like it I can swap channels. 4. I'm strongly against morality enforcement. Thus I oppose the war on drugs, bans on prostitution or gambling, sin taxes and having a drinking age higher than the age of majority. I'm also against laws forbidding consensual sexual acts. 5. I'm a strong supporter of religious freedom. If some folks want to pray let them pray as long as they don't coerce someone else. It's none of my business. Conversely, if some folks want to be hostile to religion, as long as they don't coerce someone else, by all means, let'em. It's again none of my business as long as no-one coerces each other. 6. I support a capable military, though not neccessarily one that is able to play world police. One that is enough to keep us and our allies safe, not a dime more. I oppose wars of aggression and imperialism, though I'm by no means a pacifist and when we have good reason to go on and kick butt, by all means do so. 7. I'm strong on privacy rights. While I don't think the Ten Commandments should be displayed in coutrtrooms, a golden script of the Fourth Amendment should be. Forbid cops from even buying a doughnut without probable cause. Allow them to do what they have to do when they have it. 8. Stop the marriage nonsense. Civil unions for all, and everyone shuts the f*ck up. 9. I'm pro-union, but I dislike them working like a mafia. Combine the open shop model with nondiscrimination laws that protect union members from management's retaliation and labor laws that let unions work. Let unions freely compete, as well as businesses. 10. It makes no sense to favor rich blacks over poor whites. Scrap affirmative action. Replace with free superior education and nondiscrimination in hiring laws. 11. It is outrageous that medical costs can drive people bankrupt. Single-payer, government-funded catastrophic health insurance for all (let the government bid with private contractors and lobby them for lower prices). Small medical costs let private insurance freely compete, and people choose whether to buy or not to buy it. 12. Welfare as is doesn't work. Replace with unemployment benefits to help people when they've been laid off. Good benefits that last for a reasonable while. Let them expire if they won't work. Aside from that, provide for the kids for they have no fault. That means food stamps and clothing vouchers and section 8, but no welfare check when mom's unemployment benefits run dry. 13. We need social security. We don't need it to go unchanged and untouched for the eras. Fix what doesn't work. Get ways, aside from taxation, to get revenue for it (such as investing part of the fund in a controlled way.) 14. I support the free market and free trade as long as there are reasonable protections for workers and the environment. more

Resolved Question: Aren't these tried and true methods republicans are using to fool the public?

THE TRUTH IS INCONSEQUENTIAL ... it is the PERCEPTION of truth that is all powerful. SECTION ONE: HOW TO GET AWAY WITH ANYTHING 1) Do X. (X could be any of hundreds of profit driven criminal schemes) 2) The moment X proves ROTTEN quickly insinuate and blame your opponent for X. The public doesn't remember how X got started-Nobody pays attention until there's a problem 3) Then get behind the angry mob. Whip them up and steer them toward opponent. 4) Move on to the next "outrage" as public decimates your stunned opponent. SECTION TWO: HANDLING THOSE PESKY INTERVIEWS AIMED AT UNCOVERING "THE TRUTH" 1. Remember Reagan. You can act too. 2. FOX is your friend 3. Interrupt and out shout your rival if they begin to speak any truth which is damning to you. 4. As nesc. Loudly yell about 9/11, terrorists, socialism, abortion or Hitler to quickly divert attention. 5. Repeat these phrases a) the American people b) hard working Americans c) small business owners across America d) an overwhelming majority - as often as possible, with lots of heart. 6. Always get the last word. 7. Smile SECTION THREE: HOW TO MAKE A BUNDLE IN REAL ESTATE, BANKRUPT THE MIDDLE CLASS AND STICK IT TO CHINA 1) Buy low then persuade Pres Bush to remove scant remaining FDIC leverage controls. 2) Now artificially raise value of home property and give loans to everyone who has a pen. 3) Bundle the "fattened up" loans and sell them to China. 4) Drop home values back to realistic levels. China & over leveraged homeowner tanks. But who cares? lol Thats why we have social programs! You care about China? You must be a communist anyway. 5) Now the home is back on the market at 1/3 the price. Take money China paid for the inflated loans and buy three houses. 6) Find a way to blame ensuing chaos throughout middle America on those darn liberals. 7) Do not forget to SmileDems and Independents a disorganized mish mash of weirdo’s with little in common but thirst for freedom. Fighting is low on a list of their skill sets. RepCon’s organized with specific agenda: Maintain a perpetual state of war so that a few can continue to control the many through fear and outrage. Huge sums of money funneled to a “muscular military” are easily siphoned. Idle hands threaten the status quo so we work long hours at low wages keeping our noses to the grindstone in hopes of attaining the American dream -a dream that is pushed a little farther out of reach everyday. If your head bobs up to see where your money is going, it’s pushed back down by another worry. When you can't take it anymore you’re pitted against another worker who’s made to seem responsible. The two of you fight but never get close to the truth. You ain't getting no vacation. more

Resolved Question: Extra Work on Acting Resume?

Hello. I was just wondering if I should put extra work that I have done in my acting resume. I am 18 years old, and I have been an extra for about 3 commercials and shows through Beau Bonneau extras casting here in San Francisco. I also might be able to be in an ad for a magazine or catalog, but I am not fully sure yet. I was wondering if I should put all of this in my acting resume under "extra work". I am also trying out for a role in a public theater (non-paying). They are doing "A Christmas Carol". If I am casted as something small like the chorus or something small like that, should I still put it in? The reason I want to put this in is because I am only starting out. I am an aspiring actor, and I know that you can't just start off big. The reason that I'm doing extra work is to familiarize myself with the settings of the "acting" business. Should I also put down some of my skills like: I have been playing guitar for several (about 5) years, I played the tuba for 3 years in school, I learned basic piano for about 2-3 months, and I am currently taking voice lessons for singing? Also, I won't send this resume to casting directors. The reason why I am building this resume is to get an AGENT and some type of representation. So yea, should I make an "extra work" section and put in some of the skills that I know how to do in my resume in order to get an agent or get some type of acting work in small things like a community play? Is this the RIGHT way to get an agent? Thanks to those who answer! more

Resolved Question: As part of the new "Food safety enhancement act of 2009", how does this benefit....?

This bill is 1,500 pages long. Here is a small excerpt from it which will affect so many people in our nation. What else is in this bill that is detrimental to this nation, and all of us? what part of our lives will the current administration try to control next? Q3: I have a garden and sell produce at a road-side stand on my property. Would HR 2749 apply to me? A3: Yes, you would now have to follow federally-..established standards for growing produce. [3a] Produce not grown as required by these standards would be considered as adulterated under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA). [3b] Further, you would be required to make your business records available to FDA inspectors. [3c] The inspectors would have the power to show up unannounced without a warrant to search your records without any evidence whatsoever that you have committed a violation of the law. If you refuse to let the inspector see your records, you would be guilty of adulteration under FFDCA. [3d] [3a] Section 104(b)-pp. 38-41 [3b] Section 104(a)-p. 38 [3c] Section 106(a)-p. 48 [3d] Section 207(a)-pp. 119-120 Q4: I sell produce from my garden at a local farmers market, under HR 2749 would I have to register as a "food facility" with FDA? A4: Farms are exempt from the registration requirement under current law. [4a] HR 2749 would not eliminate this exemption. "Farm" is narrowly defined under current regulations [4b]; so, it is possible that many farms that have not registered in the past, could be required to do so if FDA has more resources at its disposal to enforce registration. For example, a farm that sells vegetables straight from the garden (i.e., no processing) would not be a "food facility". If FDA strictly interprets the definition of "farm", a farm that sells canned vegetables at the market would be a "food facility" because canning is considered "processing" under the law. [4c] Under federal regulation, a farm that processes food would not be considered a "farm" for purposes of the registration requirement unless ALL of the processed food is consumed ON the farm. [4d] Under HR 2749, those who sell vegetables from the garden at farmers markets would be required to follow federal standards for growing produce [4e]; and their business records would be subject to random warrantless searches by FDA inspectors even if the agency has no evidence of any violation of the law. [4f-see Q3/A3 above] [4a] 21 USC 350d [4b] 21 CFR 1.227(3) [4c] 21 CFR 1.227(6) [4d] 21 CFR 1.227(3) [4e] Section 104(b)-pp. 38-41 [4f] Section 106(a)-p. 48 Q5: I own a bakery and sell my goods at a local farmers market, how would HR 2749 apply to me? A5: HR 2749 would apply to you in the following ways: 1 - Your bakery would qualify as a "food facility" and you would need to register with FDA each year [5a] and pay an annual fee ($500 in 2010 [5b], and increasing in future years as indexed for inflation [5c]). 2 - You would have to register in electronic format. [5d] 3 - You would be required to have a unique facility identifier number. [5e] 4 - You would be required to conduct an analysis identifying potential hazards at your food facility; and you must implement controls to prevent those hazards from occurring as well as a plan for what to do in the event that any do occur. [5f] 5 - If your products cross state lines, you must develop a FOOD SAFETY PLAN. [5g-also see Q6/A6 below] 6 - You would also be required to establish and maintain a system for tracing the food you produce. It is uncertain at this point what this traceability system will require, but the requirements are likely to be extensive. [5h] [5a] Section 101(b)-p. 6 [4b] Section 101(b)-p. 13 [5c] Section 101(c)-p. 14 [5d] Section 101(b)-p. 7 [5e] Section 206(a)-p. 118 [5f] Section 102(a)-p. 21 [5g] Section 102, sec 418A(a)-p. 28 [5h] Section 107(c)-p. 54-58 Q6: What will a FOOD SAFETY PLAN involve? A6: Your FOOD SAFETY PLAN would have to include a hazard analysis that identifies potential hazards in your operation. The plan must also include descriptions of a variety of procedures you follow to prevent hazards from occurring and corrective actions to take if any does occur. In addition, you would need to describe your procedures for recordkeeping, conducting recalls, and traceback. Further, the plan must include how you ensure a "safe and secure food supply chain" for the items and ingredients you use as well as how you implement any science-based performance standards required by FDA. [6a] [6a] Section 102, sec 418A(b)-pp. 29-30 Q7: I have read a summary of HR 2749 and am alarmed by the provision giving the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) the power to quarantine any geographic area within the country. How broad is this power? A7: Under HR 2749, the HHS Secretary would have the power to prohibit ALL MOVEMENT of ALL FOOD within a geographic area. No court order is needed to exercise this power.
