Face to Face With Business Park?S Statue

A STRIKING piece of public art that will stand at the entrance of one of the region?s biggest business parks has begun to take shape.

The 16-metre steel structure is intended to become a landmark on the edge of Aycliffe Business Park, in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham.

The piece, called In Our Image, is a steel lattice in the shape of a man?s head and shoulders. It will stand on eight stilts and features five figures that appear to be working on the scaffold.

Artist Joe Hillier has begun creating a full-sized polystyrene version of the head.

End of line for Bill Express empire

THE last remnants of the Bill Express empire have collapsed, with listed holding company On Q Group and privately owned Technology Business Systems placed in administration.

Retail king Gerry Harvey has also spoken about his failed investment in Bill Express, declaring he should be "flogged" for buying shares in the company.

On Monday, accounting firm Worrells notified the Australian Securities Exchange that it had been appointed voluntary administrator of On Q.

No announcement was made by the two remaining directors of On Q, Ian Christiansen and Julian Little.

Also placed in administration on Monday was Technology Business Systems, which is controlled by Sandro DiDonato — a friend and business associate of Ian Christiansen and his recently deceased brother, Hal, who together ran Bill Express and On Q. more

McGuinty attacking on five fronts

In a luncheon address to the London Chamber of Commerce, McGuinty reassured the business community his government's five-point plan will help stem the tide of job losses, but it can't control the value of the Canadian dollar, price of oil and the U.S. economy, all of which have combined to hammer the manufacturing sector here.

"If I could wave a magic wand and reassure everyone in Ontario they would not lose their job, I would have done it by now," McGuinty said. "We will work as hard as we can to turn this around as quickly as we can."

Last week, Sterling truck in St. Thomas announced it will slash 720 jobs, joining 600 on layoff at the plant. That's the latest in what has been an ongoing saga of layoffs and plant closings in the area.

In the last year about 1,000 manufacturing jobs have been lost in the London region and 8,000 manufacturing jobs have been cut over five years, helping fuel the city's unemployment rate of 7.4 per cent. more

Build your virtual business

In this age of instant communications and Web-based business services, there's more than one way to start and build a business. If your budget and time are limited, and potential partners or co-workers are widely dispersed, a good model to consider is to operate as a "virtual business" where most of the business structure exists online. The virtual business movement has transformed how millions of small, successful firms operate in America. Under the virtual model, business owners outsource nearly everything — including people and partners who may be anywhere — to create their company. The technologies and Web-based services to tie it all together are becoming more sophisticated but less expensive all the time, helping fuel the move to virtual existence. But while the absence of a traditional office might change how you manage your business and the people who work for you, it doesn't eliminate the need for doing so effectively. more
