300 jobs to go as Firstplus closes new business
Firstplus today became the latest casualty in the troubled home loans sector with the announcement that it is to stop writing new business.
The move by the group, which is owned by Barclaycard, will lead to 300 job cuts in its Cardiff office.
Its departure will leave just seven players in the market, down from 18 last year before the credit crunch hit.
Firstplus, which is known for its adverts fronted by Carol Vorderman, said it would no longer be writing new business from August 9 due to a fall in demand.
It said it had taken steps to try to boost business, including launching new brand Fair & Square, which aimed to make home loans more transparent.
It also tried to target a new group of consumers by advertising Fair & Square on mainstream channels and during prime-time television, whereas Firstplus adverts had typically run on daytime shows. more

Microsoft Seeks to Avoid Vista-Incompatibilty Repeat
Businesses have been slow to upgrade to Vista. Among the reasons: Software is increasingly accessed over the Internet through a Web browser and doesnt rely on a robust operating system, and Microsofts previous operating system, XP, doesnt have many glaring problems.
But, above all, businesses have held off on Vista upgrades because theres still a lot of hardware that isnt compatible with the 18-month-old operating system. Older computers arent powerful enough to run Vista, and a piece of equipment found in many newer computers doesnt work with a recent Vista upgrade. In order to make sure this doesnt happen again, Microsoft is asking tech companies to start making their products compatible with Windows 7, which is due out in the beginning of 2010, as soon as the first test version becomes available, Information Week reports. more
