Voting Question: Peachtree, Quicken, or Quick Books?

Which of these software packages would be best for me? I have a small garden design business, I work solo (no employees), I carry no inventory, and have few expenses. I invoice in excel now, and my terms are net due on receipt (so no A/R). I just need something basic to track income, expenses, sales tax, and my bank account. Which would you recommend and why? Also which version of each if possible, they all have different levels and versions. Thanks!!!  more

Voting Question: Does Quickbooks Premier Accounting software deal with INVENTORY CONTROL?

I have Quickbook Premier Accounting Edition. I have used Quickbooks a little in the past, but I'm definitely not an expert in this software. I work for a man who runs a small business. My question is - does this version of Quickbooks deal with "Inventory Control"? And if so, could you please suggest a place to go on the internet where I could learn from online tutorials about Quickbooks and Inventory Control? If this edition doesn't deal with inventory control, what add-on or integrating software would you suggest is the best to work with? I have no ideas on this and would greatly appreciate any help you could give me - please point me in the right direction. I have a deadline to learn this and not much more time left! Thank you VERY MUCH for your help!  more

Voting Question: Accounting software for small business?

Which accounting software is best to use for a small business which can track inventory and also automatically create custome invoices based on orders input. Right now we track orders and create invoices in Excel and track our financials with Quicken Home & Small Business. But it would be better if we could automate some of the process and not spend as much time manually updating items.  more

Resolved Question: Bookkeeping - how to write off obsolete sales stock?

Hello- I hope someone can guide me through the correct bookkeeping entries to make. I had a small business that evaporated after many years. I have about $2500 in old, pretty much obsolete stock (parts). I need to pay the Gov't the sales tax owed on it and I can figure that part out but here's what I'm not sure of. Sales Inventory has a Debit of $2500.00 I have an account in the "Simply Accounting" software called Inventory Variance and another one called Adjustment- write off. They are both Debit accounts. Is it as simple as Crediting Sales Inventory and Debiting Adjustment, or Variance? I've never had to do anything like this before.  more

Resolved Question: Do most small businesses use different pieces of software for CRM, Accounting and Inventory?

I am searching for a better solution for our company. I am trying to determine if it is 'the norm' (for small business) to utilize different applications to do each of these things (since the all-in-one applications that can handle everything appear to be much more expensive), resulting in a considerable amount on double entry. I'm just trying to confirm if this is actually what other small businesses are doing or not.  more

Resolved Question: QuickBooks vs Other Acctg Apps?

I've started working with QB 06 Pro and am shocked at the AWFUL state of their UI and unprofessional look and feel of the software. It looks like Intuit is the product of BAD Open-Source programmers the way they claim their user-customizable options have only 'their' options customizable. I know Accouting, Inventory, Bookkeeping is a tedious business but I'm amazed at the number of glitches Intuit pays no attention to despite having huge forums of users point them out and offer fixes. Is there a package that has a standard UI, reliable and standard (best practice) accounting rules and customizable options that actually are 'customizable'? QB seems to own the world for small-business bookkeeping and I can't believe the quality of their product. Any suggestions?  more

Resolved Question: What is the average hourly wage a CPA firm charges to keep a small businesses books?

I own a small computer shop in Columbia South Carolina. The trouble I am having is keeping track of my finances. My husband does all the manual labor and my job is to keep the books. I have worked in A/R and A/P for a few years and I have several years experience in inventory. The problem is all the systems were set up when I started. I am at a loss for how to set up an accounting system for my own business. I am currently taking a bookkeeping certificate program at tech. to help fill in the gaps. However I still feel overwhelmed. I have purchased peachtree complete software. I took the quickbooks class and even bought the 2006 pro edition, but I have inventory and it does not have provisions for that. I guess my question is what is the average to have someone keep my books for me. Any suggestions would be appreciated.  more

Resolved Question: Simple small biz accounting software that can do double entry?

I've read Quickbooks is super simple, but I'm concerned it's a dumb-downed piece of software that may be lacking in options. I've read that Peachtree is complicated. I'm willing to learn accounting, but I have to get up and running in a couple months. I have no accounting background, and I don't have time to take courses. I also need the standard business reports. I'm experienced with software, so I'm not concerned about complex programs, however I am concerned about programs that assume I know accounting very well. I assume the $100 to $250 "pro" versions are what I'm looking for, but there are so many products. I don't have inventory but I'm interested in any sort of useful pro-forma reports. What is your best pick for me?  more

Resolved Question: What's a good word for someone or thing that helps run a business?

I'm designing some software to help small mom-and-pop companies put themselves online for little or no recurring cost. The software will be able to run all the functions of their business, from inventory control, to marketing (tie ins to Froogle, eBay, Shopping.com, and AdWords and Overture), to accounting (export in CSV for now, QuickBooks later), and so forth. It will be easy to change the look-and-feel of it (using skins and templates, some of which I'll build at first, and I'll publish the guide to creating more). It will integrate with Authorize.net, PayPal, and other merchant services. It will be built using Open Source tools, and will itself be Open Source. Can anyone think of a good name for something like this?  more

House debates health bill

The bill includes an apparent concession to businesses, which balked at paying further assessments.

In the measure House legislators are considering, businesses with more than 10 employees that don’t offer "fair and reasonable" insurance coverage would basically be able to pay their annual assessment each quarter, rather than once or twice a year. Gov. Deval Patrick had proposed options that would have forced more businesses to pay additional fees.

The existing law requires businesses with more than 10 employees that don’t offer "fair and reasonable" coverage to pay $295 per employee per year. They can avoid fees if they pay at least 33 percent toward individual coverage or have at least 25 percent of their employees in the company plan. Patrick would have required both the 33 percent and 25 percent thresholds to raise $33 million. more

Cummins, Inc. Q2 2008 Earnings Call

The next trend benefiting both our engine and power generation businesses is the price and availability of energy. The rising cost of oil is driving demand for greater fuel economy, which is one of the key advantages of the diesel engine. We believe diesel engines with light duty trucks and SUVs in United States would be a big growth opportunity. Chrysler and Nissan will be our first customers for Cummins new light duty diesel engine, which will be available in 2010.

We also believe that our leadership in engine technology and the relative subsystems like turbochargers and fuel systems will provide additional growth opportunity. Cummins and our partners are working to provide our customers with the most fuel efficient and reliable products. The need for energy is also playing the Cummins [inaudible] generation business. more

Memoirs of a Lipstick Queen

Seven years ago, lipstick entrepreneur Poppy King was living in St Kilda, picking up the pieces of her once-celebrated business. Once the fawned-over wunderkind who'd started her own lipstick company at age 19, she'd lost ownership of it and was getting used to reading about the messy fall-out with her business partners. Then, one day, she opened her computer to find an email from the Estee Lauder Corporation in New York. "They wrote, 'Would you be interested to meet with us?' " she remembers. "I tried to get more details, but they were just so completely cryptic." But Poppy hadn't become Poppy by avoiding risk, so she used her frequent flyer points to hop on a plane, pretending she'd been in Manhattan all along. At her first meeting with the company, her heart beat fast. "I thought, 'Oh my god, I could have come all the way over here with my hopes up, with them having no idea that I'd flown across the world, only to have them say, 'Oh, can you recommend a PR person,' or something like that." Instead, the Lauder company offered her a chance to relocate to New York with a job as vice president of creative marketing for its Prescriptives brand - a role she held for three years. more

Squeeze hits business confidence

Tough economic conditions are seriously affecting business confidence as profits fall, a study just published has revealed.

Firms' optimism about business in the next six months is at its lowest level since records began, although companies in Scotland seem to have a more positive outlook than the rest of the country.

The Business in Britain survey from Lloyds TSB Commercial questioned 1,800 UK firms.

The bank's Business Confidence Index for July revealed that the balance of firms expecting better rather than worse order books, profits and sales for then next six months dropped from plus-18% in January to minus-8%.

Of those quizzed, just plus-2% are expecting high than lower sales in the next half year compared to plus-28% six months ago, while the balance of UK firms predicting higher rather than lower profits over the same period has dropped from plus-4% to minus-25%. more
