JetBlue to launch budget airline in Brazil

David Neeleman, a serial airline entrepreneur who founded JetBlue Airways Corp., said he intends to start his fourth carrier next year in Brazil, the country of his birth, pending government approvals.

The new venture, not yet named, already has attracted $150 million from investors in the U.S. and Brazil, he said Thursday, and the fund-raising effort was vastly oversubscribed. Mr. Neeleman, who speaks fluent Portuguese and holds both U.S. and Brazilian citizenship, said the new carrier will operate 118-seat jetliners built by Brazil's Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica, or Embraer, on domestic routes and offer the same types of low fares and passenger amenities as JetBlue.

JetBlue has a 1,000-worker reservations training center in Salt Lake City. The New York-based airline provides daily service from Salt Lake International to New York and four cities in California including San Francisco, Burbank, Long Beach and San Diego. more

AllThingsMedia Aims to Fund Female Entrepreneurs

Women with significant equity in emerging media companies looking for funding now can apply to AllThingsMedia. A new joint venture capital forum formed by the Paley Center for Media and Springboard Enterprises, AllThings aims to help female entrepreneurs gain access to major investors.

AllThingsMedia is part of the Paley Center's She Made It initiative, launched in 2005 to recognize the successes of women in media.

“We're looking to support women in the industry in a new way, by helping them get access to the capital and contacts they need to fuel exciting new businesses in all areas of media," said Paley Center president Pat Mitchell.

Cogeneration to help Eskom avoid power cuts to platinum mines - 27th March 2008

Over 100 South African industrial companies and entrepreneurs have told Eskom that they were interested in generating additional power, the firm has said.

Eskom extended the deadline for cogeneration bids from February to the end of May and following the positive response it could receive a maximum of 3,000 MW of power.

The firm said that cogeneration was a new concept and many different aspects needed to be involved including "national legislation".

South African suppliers capable of in putting a minimum of one megawatt of electricity continuously were asked to contact Eskom if they could have facilities in place by 2012.

Industries capable of offering between five MW and 100 MW were also asked in a separate phase.

"We have begun preparing tender documents for these potential generators and will be releasing them by the end of March 2008 for interest, until the end of November 2008," a statement from the energy supplier read. more
