Road chiefs grilled over parking chaos

Residents also complained that businesses advertise free parking to cash in on Black Boy Lane's exclusion from the restricted zone. But many agreed already fragile businesses suffer the strain from shoppers unable to park nearby leaving them vulnerable to closure.Bronja Elton, 34, of Black Boy Lane, rejected council claims they were properly consulted on, adding: "I've never received anything through my door - I don't believe you have had a majority voice at all."And the very unfair thing about what you have done is that there is now an assumption that we want it because we have these problems, but I don't believe in paying for parking."Councillor Haley responded to the questions at the meeting at the West Green Learning Centre, claiming yellow lines will help ease parking problems when they are enforced in August. He added: "The council is incredibly sympathetic in terms of the affects of displacement parking. more

T. Boone Pickens has energy plan

The 80-year-old billionaire has been appearing on television, in interviews and advertisements, promoting his energy plan, which includes a huge wind farm in Texas.Pickens isnt some newcomer to the energy business. He has a long history in the oil business and is now chairman of the hedge fund BP Capital Management. He is promoting wind power not on the grounds that it will help the environment, which it will, but on the theory that it can reduce the countrys dependence on imported oil, which he calculates has risen from 24 percent in 1970 to 42 percent in 1990 to 70 percent in 2008.This country has vast natural gas and coal resources, as well as nuclear capability to produce electricity, he points out. He advocates making use of all these resources, but the heart of his plan is developing what he calls wind farms in a corridor that runs north to south through the middle part of the United States. more

Digital disaster: Roadmap to 21st century digital economic

This is the Communication Age, not the Industrial Age, or even the Information Age. The country that controls communication and information and is able to gather it better and faster will become the super power of the 21st century. We must adopt the paradigm that to be educated is to be able to read, write, and use a computer. We need to instil in the students that a Bachelors degree is no longer enough. A Master’s degree is not enough either. We must teach them that their future will be based on a lifelong learning experience. We must recognise that the control over the means of production is no longer exclusively in the hands of a few and motivate our students to believe that they can compete internationally. Software development offers the fastest stairway to actualisation in this brave new world and we must equip as many as we can to become true knowledge workers with skills capable of attracting globally benchmarked compensation plans. more

Why International Business Questions asked

Open Question: Any Business people out there or anyone else? i need help please.?

im doing a business class at the community college and i need help with some questions: 1. in 1977 the united states passed its foreing corrupt practice act. This anti-bribery statute prohibits payments made to obtain or retain business by influencing a foreign official's acts or decisions. Several other nations followed the US's lead and passed similar statutes. How successful was this attempt to remove bribery from the arena of international business? 2.Explain how cultural issues may differ between multinational and single-country companies 3. explain why it is important for international sales representatives to understand cultural and social influences. answers much appreciated(: more

Open Question: tell me what you think?

this is a speech i had to wright for school could you guys read it and tell me what you think of it thanks. ohh and if you can think of a better title could you tell me Two dollars a gallon and counting In 1969, a massive oil spill from an offshore drilling platform off the coast of Santa Barbara leaked approximately 70,000 barrels of oil into the Pacific Ocean. The leaked oil spread nearly 650 miles along the coast of California over a period of three months. It is estimated that 8000 birds and 15000 fish were killed in the disaster. After this incident, the citizens of Santa Barbara started a coalition to ban offshore drilling. They received nearly 20000 signatures on their petition and were granted their wish, ensuring that Santa Barbara’s coast was protected from drilling. These people have stood up for their coast’s environment; now why can’t the rest of the US? The oil industry argues that offshore oil drilling will make many jobs, that the US coasts have a lot of oil, and that offshore oil platforms do not affect tourism. This is completely untrue though which is why the United States needs to ban all off shore oil-drilling of the east and west coasts of the US; They need to do this because offshore oil drilling will not make many jobs, the US does not have much oil along the coasts, and offshore oil platforms will destroy tourism. One of the problems with offshore oil drilling is that the new platforms will not make many jobs. Although the oil industry says that nearly 1 million jobs would be created, this is incorrect. As stated by MSNBC.com writer Mark Murray “only 22-25 people work on each oil rig at a time”. The oil industry would argue that this statistic is false this is also completely untrue though as the figure simply states how many people work on the platform at a time. Also by this estimate only one hundred thousand jobs will be made for the proposed 4000 new oil platforms, which is nowhere close to the oil industry’s proposed number of jobs. Another thing the oil industry does not want people to realize is that because of massive offshore oil-drilling platforms jobs will actually be lost. People that rely on the ocean such as fishermen, dive teams, and marine merchantmen would lose jobs. Virginia would be hurt heavily by offshore oil because of this. Because the ocean is Virginia’s main source of revenue we would lose money that could have been spent on Virginias Public Works. Tourism would also be affected by offshore oil drilling. Tourism is another large form of income for Virginia Beach. Surfing is a major reason for the massive tourist presence in Virginia Beach. If an oil spill were to occur from one of the proposed oil drilling platforms off the East Coast the beaches would be closed down until the oil was cleaned up, which has in some very severe cases taken up to three months to do. In 1982 a massive oil spill closed down San Padre Island off the coast of Texas for an entire summer. In a 2009 Politifact.com article written by Aaron Sharockman, ‘offshore oil drilling has cost the tourism industry before’ states “Texas beaches in the South Padre Island area lost tourism revenues between 4 million and 4 1/2 million [dollars]”. Another way offshore oil drilling would affect tourism is by forcing local businesses to lower prices. The reason for these price changes would be; that since these massive eyesores would disrupt the views from U.S. beaches the only reason tourists would tolerate them would be by much cheaper prices. This could then result in local businesses going out of business. This would then affect the amount of tourism, which in turn would start this cycle over again. Another debate about offshore oil drilling is how much oil is located along the east and west coasts. As stated by The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace writer Whitney Leonard’s in ‘Five alternatives that make more sense than offshore oil’. The oil industry says that approx. 10% of the worlds oil supply is located on the east and west coasts. This is also an untruth which has been stated by the oil industry, as “only about 1.4 percent of the worlds supply of oil” comes from offshore oil drilling off the coast of the United States. 1.4 percent of the worlds oil supply is approx. 18 billion barrels of oil. This may sound like a lot but the US would use that amount of oil in only about a little over two years. The reason we would use this much oil is because the US consumes nearly 25% of the world’s oil supply, while the US only produces 10% of it. This will very soon become a major issue unless better fuel alternatives are found. Because of the small amount of oil located in the world waste is not an option, so when massive oil spills occur it is not only a disaster for the environment it also causes a massive devastation to the economy. In these tough economic times waste is not an option. The amount of oil on the Coasts has been estimated numerous times more

Resolved Question: Is Manmohan singh govt is acting under US pressure to pass "Civil nuclear liability bill"?

In a significant message to the business lobby in Washington, the Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its nod to the Civil Nuclear Liability Bill.(20 november 2009) The bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament's Winter Session by the Ministry of Atomic Energy. http://news.rediff.com/report/2009/nov/20/cabinet-approves-civil-nuclear-liability-bill.htm The bill is designed to shield foreign-reactor builders from the weight of the financial consequences of severe accidents. It shifts the primary burden for accident liability from the foreign builders to the Indian state. The bill is said to cap total compensation payable in the event of a severe radioactive release at Rs. 2,250 crore ($483 million), with the liability of the foreign supplier restricted to a trifling Rs. 300 crore ($64.6 million). Why should a poor country like India assume liability from a ridiculously low threshold? In fact, to cover claims of personal injury and property damage in the event of a catastrophic nuclear accident, India — given the density of its population and the consequent higher risks — must also maintain a large standby compensation pool, but without the state being burdened. The proposed Indian cap is well below international levels. Japan, for example, has boosted its plant operator liability to120 billion yen ($1.33 billion). Under the OECD’s 2004-amended Paris Convention, total liability was set at €1.5 billion ($2.04 billion), with the operator’s share being nearly half. Germany, for its part, has unlimited operator liability and demands € 2.5 billion ($3.4 billion) security from each plant’s operator. http://chellaney.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!4913C7C8A2EA4A30!1160.entry States with a majority of the world’s present 436 nuclear power reactors are not yet party to any international liability convention. Many countries still maintain a “wait and see” approach. For example, China, Japan and the U.S. are not party to any international liability convention, while Russia — a party to the Vienna Convention since 2005 — has refused to pass legislation to waive or cap accident liability for its foreign suppliers. When a number of nuclear-generating countries are yet to adopt domestic legislation in this field, let alone ratify international conventions, why is New Delhi in a rush to pass a bill that caps liability on terms weighted in favour of foreign suppliers? Also did we forget the experience of Bhopal gas tragedy?? more

Open Question: Is this a viable solution to curb lobbyists from corrupting U.S. government?

OK here is the problem with US government, it’s corrupted to the bone with greasy corporate lobbyist’s money who typically line politician’s pockets with money to turn them into their personal political puppets. That is no surprise right? Amazingly we Americans seem to be able to accept that our political system is heavily influenced by big business. We all know that when a political candidate gets huge campaign contributions from a corporation, or co-op of corporations, he/she will ALWAYS serve the needs of their campaign contributors over the needs of their actual constituents. (Corporate campaign contributors vs. voters) A perfect example is all the pork barrel spending we see politicians attempting to keep tagging onto recent Health Care reform bills. This proves as a perfect example of how corporate interests are put ABOVE the taxpayers who actually fund all these programs. We pay the bills, so why don't we get to control how OUR tax dollars are spent? Because corporate lobbyists are who put politicians into office through campaign finance. This is nothing new, but I think I have a solution to fix this rotting system, partially, and without being labeled as a 'socialist' by regulating how private enterprise conducts its day-to-day business. So here is my solution, since we won’t EVER get big businesses greedy hands out of our tax dollars, we can at least curb these ravenous money vultures, and this is how: ALL corporations have one primary objective; to generate profit for their shareholders, at all costs. This is accepted behavior in business these days, even if it means stepping on the tax-payer’s toes and screwing us out of OUR OWN MONEY to accomplish their primary objective, to return a profit to their owners. That is just the reality of business as usual here in the U.S. We can’t tell the corporations what to do because they would have PR firms screaming 'Socialism!' within seconds. But what we U.S. citizens need to remember is that corporations founded here in the USA in the early 1900’s like Ford, Dow Chemical, and Exxon-Mobil were created here, but these are NO LONGER owned by solely Americans. A majority of investors are now foreigners. Most of the best performers in the U.S. stock market have a higher percentage of foreign investors than U.S. investors. People like the Saudi Royal family, the Chinese, and MANY rich Europeans own a higher percentage of these corporations now, and THEY are the ones profiting off of U.S. corporate success. These U.S. headquartered corporations are not owned 100% by U.S. citizens, and outsource most of their work to the Chinese, so why are they treated with the rights of a U.S. citizen? They don’t deserve free speech in OUR country. We Americans should NOT allow ANY corporation which has over 50% foreign investor ownership to have ANY influence on our political system. When we allow these foreign-owned/U.S. based corporations, like Exxon-Mobil, to legally corrupt our political system through political lobbying, we are allowing international investors steal our tax dollars so they can earn more money per share. MY SOLUTION; we need new laws to pass to curtail corporate lobbyists. All corporations, organizations, or businesses who want to donate political campaign contributions should be REQUIRED to be 100% transparent. All the investors, stock-holders, owners can remain anonymous, except for their citizenship status and exact number of shares owned. Any corporation that is owned 50% or more by foreign investors should lose ALL rights to lobby our government. We cannot let the communist Chinese or Arab oil barons to affect our government any longer. Any PAC or hedge funds that donate campaign contributions should also have to report all their current clients/contributors and their citizenship status. The only time corporations, hedge funds, and PAC's should be allowed to contribute to our political system if they can prove they are owned OVER 50% by American citizens, if not, then they should be blackballed from our political system to prevent foreigners from corrupting our political system and steal our tax dollars. Foreigners should have ZERO influence on OUR AMERICAN way of life. So we can’t pass any laws regulating business, per se. We just go over big businesses head. We need to pass strict laws to regulate our political system and determine EXACTLY where and who exactly campaign contributions come from. Right now we only see vague data outlining which companies or industries as a whole contribute to individual politicians, but not who owns these companies making the contributions. We need to control which lobbyists are able to grease the pockets of political puppets. If they are not American owned (50% or more) then they need to keep out of our government. Otherwise we might as well let Kim Jong-il or Fidel Castro to provide campaign contributions to U.S. candidates running for office. Do you think the American people would approve of communists or s more

Resolved Question: Is this why we bailed out the banks?

Janitor Facing Eviction Cleans Up After CEO Whose Bank Bought Her House.http://news.yahoo.com/s/huffpost/20100303/cm_huffpost/481057 At first, Minneapolis janitor Rosalina Gomez said she didn't realize she was cleaning up after the CEO of the bank that bought her foreclosed home in a September sheriff's sale. "At the beginning I didn't know he was the guy," said Gomez through an interpreter in an interview with HuffPost. "I didn't know the relationship between my house and him. I saw him one time but never talked to him." The guy is Richard Davis, CEO of Minneapolis-based US Bank, the nation's sixth-largest bank and recipient of $6.6 billion in TARP bailout funds. On Feb. 28, Davis was set to receive an "Executive of the Year" award from the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal at a banquet -- 11 days before Gomez and her family had to comply with an eviction order. The Service Employees International Union, of which Gomez is a member, could not resist the opportunity to draw attention to the soon-to-be-evicted woman cleaning up after one of the bankers taking her home away (US Bank is the trustee; Chase is the mortgage servicer). The SEIU began agitating for Gomez, an effort which dovetailed with a union campaign on behalf of area janitors fighting for a better contract. This guy has two guards who are being paid just to follow her around. I think he should have to do his own cleaning.GoGo Girls, that is not the issue. Do you owe the banks a bail out? Is that your responsibility? Your tax money is supporting this BS. more

Open Question: Where Can I Obtain A Free List(s) of All AT&T Base Rates?

Where can I obtain a free list of AT&T base rates for intrastate, international, and long distance? I have checked AT&T and other sites but not find what I am looking for as in base rates (just given rate plans and such). For example, if any U.S. business asks me what the base rates are, I can say, for example, that Egypt is $9.99 surcharge and $5.15 per minute. Their intrastate would be based on their location to other areas, and long distance, Canada, etc, is the same for all U.S. areas. A single collection of global base rates. I have tried many sites over the months but not found anything at all. I figured, why not ask here and see what happens. Maybe someone knows. I know what I want, just hope I asked it descriptive enough. Thanks and God bless.EDITED As notes, I am not looking for any particular plan. Just what their overall base rates are, and there is nothing on their websites with this information. I have even contacted them with no success (they just keep giving me around arounds and no actual help). more

Resolved Question: motivation. who can check?

guys, i have written a motivation to study at the university. who can check it? i also would like to heard a critics and something what i need to change or add or remove. please, help me. motivation is very important. Dear Sir or Madam, I am Evelina and I come from Latvia and currently I am living in the UK. I graduated from the gymnasium last year. I have heard a lot about Scotland, its culture and traditions. Some of my friends, who study there, have told me many interesting things about this part of England. Having read some articles and heard some reviews from others, I decided that Scotland is the best option for me. Since I love geography and traveling, I would like to be in touch with English culture, its architecture, lifestyle, interesting people, and find myself there. I have always been interested in business, administration and IT. That is why I have chosen Scotland as a place where I can study it. And therefore, this is the best place for me to find myself in this sphere, because I am an enthusiastic, with a love of people and a determination to succeed. I imagine a career which is: fast moving, gives me the opportunity for rapid promotion, is logical and practical, provides the chance to work wherever I want.I have always enjoyed learning about business. I found it fascinating. So it is quite easy for me to talk about my career ambitions (business) and what I want to do (be employed in the field of business and IT). What concerns my traits, I suppose that I am very well prepared for business and administration. To my mind, a business background is an excellent way to a good career. I have took a gap year after school and moved to United Kingdom for understanding myself – what I really want to do in my life, to improve my English skills and gain some work and life experience ,to meet new people as well. When I was at school, I worked as a secretary in the office one of my summer holiday in Czech Republic and I liked that job more rather than my current job (general assistant at the hotel). It is good I can make a comparison between such different part of work, that is why I decided that hospitality is not what I want to study and to do. Now, after long consideration, I came to the most obvious and elementary decision – business, administration and IT field is something that I want and what I need. I would like to mention my achievements in mathematics and drawing while I was at school. I am really good at problem-solving and figuring things out, at logic and analyses. I am engaged in plotting and drawing at school and also at the art school. And once, my figure has been noted at an exhibition in Macedonia. I am a good PC user (Excel, MS-Office) as well. I think, my decision to study this particular course, was affected by my father who worked both as a construction superintendent, and an engineer. He drew and designed a lot, work on the computer, communicated with people, and was responsible for many projects. I have always watched and listened carefully to how he did his job, and have learnt a lot from him. I think I got my drawing skills, my responsibility, my logical and analytical mind and the ability to come up with fast and right decisions, from my father. I played a lot of sports as a kid. This is where I have learned the values of teamwork, how to win, how to work hard, how to focus and concentrate, and how to find a balance between my time and priorities. And I suppose that the gained experience will be quite valuable for my future life and career. To sum up, I think to study abroad is an excellent way to broaden my horizons, to make new friends, to get not only theoretical but and practical knowledge. It is wonderful starting to communicate with international people and without recognition beginning to look at world a little bit differ. In my opinion, Scotland can provide a lot of opportunities for my future career. It’s the best place to study, live and work. Studying in Scotland would be a great experience for me. I am sure I will do my best there. Thank you for considering my application Yours faithfully, more

Thanks for your email.I understand what you have said. One important thing you have to Note in International Transaction is the fact that Trust,Understanding and Co-operation is highly needed as to enable both the Lender and the Borrower Develop Understanding for one another.Another Thing you have to Understand is that it depend on the Firm the Loan Fund is Coming from that will enable you Know if the Transaction you are Transacting is Legit or Not.Your last emails are giving me signs that you never appreciated all what I am about doing for you. I have never involved myself in any form of Scam Activities and I see no reason why you should be taking this matter too far to that extent. I do what pleases me because I noticed that those who does what pleases them are the once that receives reward from God mostly. I am a man of high reputation. Just that I don't like bragging with what I have done for people. If you must know, I have customers like you overseas who receives their loans successfully all because they never said that they will not do business with Nigerian. I have feelings for people all over the world especially the ones that are not financially stable ,this is due to the fact that i have been like that before and during the period that i was in that state, nobody treated me wrongly so treating somebody that need help wrongly is wickedness of which i am not a party to. Even though you are not interested i am not worried but i just want you to know that the ability to trust somebody will get you back to your feet. It is a common rumour in the USA that People resident in Nigeria are bad but i want you to know that trusting me and doing business with me will not make you disappointed. This i assure you. Voting Question: Magicjack! Why is there a crackling sound when I call one specific number?

My magicjack sounds fine on local calls and international calls. But for some reason, there is one specific number that I call, which ALWAYS crackles unbearably when I call it...its so bad that I have to end the call. (That business number is completely fine when I call it from my cell...so it has nothing to do with the quality of THEIR phone line) Why is it that this one business number always has crackling...but all other home/business numbers that I call sound fine? Resolved Question: North American Union, what is the most recent news of this?

The north American union is the secret plan which began in 2005 with George bush, to remove the borders between Mexico and Canada. Lately I have heard the recession we are in is a way to slowly remove the flow of money inside our country so we could then switch over to a new international North American Union money (when the union is established), Mondex. Which will be bio chips implanted in our hands or skull. The bible new testament's book of revelations ch.13 foretells of this. [The beast] causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads. And that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: his number is 666. Now please take time to think about this and reply with an answer that may be interesting in some way, if you do not believe in this, explain why, do not just go off on how stupid and senseless it is. if you do not believe it take it in for the story at least. For more information you can Google all types of pages will pop up, here is one page i found interesting about the Mondex bio chips http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/mondex.asp.I recall the one money will be called amero. But who knows things can change. more

Resolved Question: Is the world a dark place??? PLZ help?

Dear all, I am really lost, and I need your help... I am only 25 years old, and I am very ambitious.. I have graduated from Business School, and I am currently working in a huge corporation where I make a lot of money, but it's not my dream. I have always wanted to make positive change, work somewhere where I can make a difference everyday by going to work.. So I hate working for such private profit oriented company. I am planning to quit and pursue a career in International Relations.. but I am scared... Let me tell you why, first because many people who work in the UN had told me that it's the same everyone, and that there is corruption everywhere and it is not going to be different... Second, I am in a relationship with this wondefull guy.. I think he's the one.. I'm crazy about him and I'm going to have to go abroad to study and follow my dream.. I dont know if we can survive a distant relationship.. SO I have a question for all of you... Do dreams come true? Can we really make a difference..??? I am very very ambitious and I have so many goals.. but I am starting to think..... What if I become a bit less ambitious, and maybe get married, and have kids like normal people..?? What do you think? Love vs. Career? Reality vs. Dreams? Money vs. Making a difference? more

Voting Question: "For Screenwriters Only.. A Professor who claims to be a screenwiter gave me this advise.. she teaches a class?

"To me although she is in the buisness and teaches an on line class she sounds synical.. and acts like you have to be in contest to get an agent and that one must have a manager then an agent and no one is actually lucky to land an agent straight off.. We are talking about Wisconsin.. and they are the most backwards out of the loop state.. Can some spill some positive reality for me on what she has said.. ..who are doing this for a living.. based on when you started in the business.. Thanks She Said This To Me Below: A big reality check for you: If you're looking for any book or class that can guarantee you a sale, that's going to be impossible. It's a tough business. But yes, in my class, a couple of people have optioned and sold things. Carl Ames is one, and Martin McSweeney ended up at the top of the Page International contest and then that got him hired to write for BBC Television. Others have had their scripts read by actors at festivals. One guy who just finished is producing his own script written through the course. To get produced and into the theater is almost impossible, UNLESS you plan to produce your own script and market it. That's the reality. Most of us do want to see our scripts in the theater, and so we try to get the attention of a producer, manager, or agent. Many writers will option material. That's the first step toward that production. An option is a huge, huge thing in a writer's life. It opens doors. At the end of the course, if you've worked hard, the script is usually ready for the next step. I can't think of a person who completed my course who wasn't ready. They usually start pitching to Hollywood the minute they finish the class. But nobody can guarantee that you'll get an agent or sale. There are no books on how to get an agent. Here's why: An agent is usually the last thing you get. First a writer must get a producer or manager-producer to option the script. Then, if a sale to another bigger producer or studio looks imminent, the writer hires an agent (or a lawyer) to do the contract. Agents are there to do contracts. They're the money people. It's the producers, managers, and writers who go about finding the deals. At the A List level, yes, the agent is involved in finding some work for a person like Julia Roberts. But that's not our level. But all writers try to get an agent and once in a while an agent will sign with you. It's mighty rare, and usually you have to be recommended by somebody to get an agent, OR, you have to win a contest or something. Agents and managers troll the contests. All writers know this. You can shun contests, but now you've just shunned agents by doing that. That's a huge beginner mistake to think that way. Typically, agents and managers are inclined to look at the top 25 percent placements in a contest. That kind of finish goes in your pitch emails and so on. Perhaps there's a group you can join? Much of this is well-known among writers and you'd find it out at meetings, even online ones. Wisconsin Screenwriters Forum has an online chat board where you can ask questions. But you might also look at www.Hollywoodlistsales.com because I think they have a chat board, too. Also, other good places for info include Scriptapalooza, American Screenwriters Association, Nicholl's Contest/Academy website, and John August's website. Go to John's site now and you'll find tons of great info about the industry and writing. He's a trusted guy among writers; he has good info. Best wishes. Christine more

Voting Question: IS MY BOYFRIEND SERIOUSLY INTO THE RELATIONSHIP AND ME?

i have been dating this 40 yr old man for almost 3 months and its getting pretty serious, i have met almost everyone in his family including relatives, been spending nights at his place and him on my place, "i love you" have been said pretty much and he asked me to move in with him but later changed his mind cause he said he wants a long term relationship with me but is afraid that if we move in together so early, it might screw things up between us. Now, i asked him to help me with something, i cant really get a car loan here and need a car, im an international student so i asked him if he can get the loan in his name and i will make the weekly repayments automatically debited from my bank account. he said no cause he would be liable to the loan he said and thats not cool. i asked him if he trust me, he said he does. so my question is... FIRST HE CHANGED HIS MIND ABOUT MOVING IN TOGETHER BECAUSE HIS COWORKER SAID SOMETHING TO HIM AND apparently COWORKER MADE SENSE... NOW HE WONT HELP ME WITH THE CAR LOAN EVEN IF HE KNOWS I AM CAPABLE OF MAKING THE WEEKLY REPAYMENTS. ITS A $13K second hand car.... we are also in the process of putting up a catering business since i am a professional chef, im thinking that if he wont help me get the car, why would i help him have a business considering the expertise is with me? would appreciate sound and sensible advise please. thank you more

Resolved Question: Why University of Illinois (champaign Urbana)? Also, How personal is their admissions process?

Okay, so I am currently a junior in high school and I am researching universities and looking into the best schools, financially and by the quality of the education. I am originally from Illinois but I have been going to high school overseas in Milan, Italy since I was a freshman. It has been a great experience but I'm not quite sure if I will fit into the U of I community because of my diverse background and experiences. Although, I would love if it were possible. My mom recieved both her graduate and undergraduate degrees from U of I (champaign urbana) so she has been pushing me to apply there. Although she has told me once or twice that it is difficult to get in, and she's not sure I am able to. Honestly it was a bit of a blow to my ego but I would like to know what my chances are, and whether the admissions process will take into account the many extracurricular and other personal activities I have dedicated myself to. Below is a taste of my personal achievements during HS: I am currently taking the International Bacchleareaute (haha that is spelled wrong fyi) or the IB. This is like AP and is an accelerated program. I am taking HL math, HL English, and HL Chemistry although I do not plan to go into a Chemistry-related major. Since my freshman year, my semester grades have included all A+s and As except for this past semester I recieved 2 Bs. Our school does not include B+s or A-s because the IB does not grade this way. I received two Bs in Chemistry and Spanish. My courses include Economics, HL Math, Business Studies, HL English, HL Chemistry, Spanish and Italian. I am interested in entering the Business field or possibly communications although I have not quite decided. To continue this already pretty long description, I am in numerous extracurriculor activities and really dedicate myself to all. I have been in student government as Publicity official for my sophmore year and junior year, plus I am running for President this spring for my senior year. I am a member of NHS (national honors society) and have planned many charity events in conjunction. I am also treasurer of Prom Comitteee, and also do MANY sports. I was basketball captain my sophmore and junior year, and volleyball captain my junior year. I also play soccer. This takes alot of my time and I really enjoy particpating in everything. I won the most outstanding english award for 10th grade and most improved in physics last year as well. I am hoping to recieve both English and Economics this year and I am currently particpating in an international marketing competition with the well known company Media-Saturn. Overall, I just want to know if U of I will take into account many of these parts of my life that I have worked so hard to incorporate. I am almost positive I have left many things out as well. I do habitat for humanities and am going to travel to Romania in May as well as I have done a personal fundraiser for St. Judes. I know U of I has a great club diversity but I also just want the best school that will help me succeed. ~Thanks* Oh and I also do MUN (Model United Nations) and go to a conference in Dublin, Ireland everyyear...... more

Resolved Question: Is the work of Amnesty International simply thinly-veiled imperialism?

I know that I am probably just playing devils advocate here but it has struck me that what Amnesty International do is imperialistic. Obviously I don't mean they are trying to take over other countries and cultures but why do they expect other people in other countries to behave and treat their people in ways that we in the West feel is appropriate? For instance we are horrified by the way women are treated in certain countries, the victims of rape being punished in Saudi Arabia, just one example. I am horrified by this as much as the next person but what business is it of ours? If a delegation from Saudi Arabia came here and said we must change our laws on homosexuality or abortion they would be given short shrift. The West (that's Europe and America really) can't keep going around the world like it is the 19th century bestowing our beliefs, behavior patterns, religious views and ideologies the way it was done in Victorian times. We should leave other countries alone to sort themselves out. more

Resolved Question: How are illegals paying taxes when paid in cash by a subcontractor on the project?

MARIETTA - An undercover agent for the watchdog group Jobs for Georgians has worked as a bricklayer the past three months on the construction of the new Cobb County Superior Courthouse, and told the Cobb Board of Commissioners on Tuesday he has evidence that illegal immigrants have been employed and paid in cash by a subcontractor on the project. Commission Chairman Sam Olens said that the county would take "immediate action" if the allegations of illegal employment prove to be accurate, but added that right now they are only allegations. Jose Alvarez may have looked like just another bricklayer, but he has been gathering evidence for Jobs for Georgians that he says substantiates the group's suspicions that illegal immigrants are working under the watch of one of the project's subcontractors. Alvarez, who is also a business agent for the Washington, D.C.-based organization International Bricklayers, said he and another construction worker with Jobs for Georgians, Frank Lozano, began working on the site in November. Posing as bricklayers, they formed relationships with the workers and subcontractors and continued their work into January. He was told subcontractor Zebra's policy is for workers to show up at the job site in order to obtain work. But Alvarez said he could not get "a straight answer" from Victor Candelaria, a contractor hired by Zebra to oversee workers laying the blocks at the courthouse, about how much his workers were being paid. Alvarez said Candelaria's reluctance to give him answers aroused his suspicions. After discussions with other workers, Alvarez and Lozano learned they were being paid $10 an hour, as opposed to $18 an hour, which Alvarez said is the normal hourly rate. He said he soon found out there was a reason for the unreasonably low pay. "I have a recorded conversation with Damian Perez, a bricklayer from Canada with legal status, who told me that he asked Victor when he was first hired whether he needed to present them with his papers, and he was told no. He said all he would need to do is go through a drug screening and the safety training set up by Turner, and that was it," Alvarez said. "So I asked him why everyone was getting paid so low, and he told me Victor would take the checks issued to him by Zebra, cash them, then pay the workers in cash. He told them they were being paid less than usual, but that it was OK because there would be no taxes taken out. I can't say I was surprised, because we knew this was going on not only with Zebra but with others, but it was good to finally get it on tape." Alvarez and a dozen other members of Jobs for Georgians voiced their concerns during Tuesday morning's Cobb Board of commissioners meeting. Alvarez provided the commission with invoices that he said show Zebra even cheated Candelaria out of his $9,000 retainer. http://www.mdjonline.com/view/full_story/5903006/article-Report--Illegals-working-on-courthouse?instance=home_news_left more

Resolved Question: I am an Accounting major at the University of Maryland. Would Criminal Justice be a good dual degree?

The Criminal Justice degree wouldn't require me to take any extra classes as I already have a large number of credits as a freshman. The reason I would want to double with this is that I would like to eventually break into forensic accounting years down the line or work in litigation support once I get my CPA. The other degrees I have some interest besides Criminal Justice are Finance, International Business, Economics, or Information Systems, but since I want to be an accountant and not work in IT or as a financial analyst why not do a second degree that is pretty easy to get and is what I am interested in? more

Resolved Question: Do some people need to review the Bush and Clinton years again?

The Dow reached its all time high of 14,000 in 2007, on Bush's watch. It was no bubble, the Dow was above 10,000 the majority of Bush's time in office up to that point. But after the GOP lost its majority in Congress in 2007, the Dow took its worst one-year plunge in history. Bush's economic policies worked for six years. But after the GOP lost control of Congress, it was all downhill from there. After the GOP lost control of Congress, then the GOP was not able to pass legislation that could have prevented the crash. The Democrats did nothing. The GOP might have done something, but they couldn't because they didn't have a majority anymore. Bush's watchlist system worked for 8 years and 3 days. Even if you start counting with the shoe bomber on 12/22/2001, it kept us safe from airliner bombings until 12/25/2009. If the system worked that long, why did it fail less than one year after Obama took office? The problem is not the system, it's the people who are now runing it. They took a system that was working, and in less than a year it fell apart. And unemployment was NEVER 10% on Bush's watch. The so-called "mess" that Bush gets blamed for actually happened AFTER the Democrats gained seats in Congress and the GOP lost its majority. I think that points to who is REALLY to blame, and why these problems persist after the Democrats have gained even more control. Arthur Levitt, Jr. was the longest serving head of the SEC. Do a Google search on him, see what pops up. He was appointed by Clinton in 1993 and again in 1998. He left in 2001, so he covered the entire Clinton administration. Levitt gave Madoff a free pass because they were both members of the Harmonie Club, a social club for the ultra wealthy in NYC. Madoff was first reported to the SEC in 1992: http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/sep/02/bernard-madoff-sec-report Report: Regulator was tipped off about Madoff fraud as early as 1992 "a suspicion of trouble at Madoff Investment Securities arose as early as 1992 when customers of Avellino & Bienes, a fund that invested all its money with Madoff, complained about documents making a seemingly impossible promise of "100%" safe investments. Although the SEC shut down Avellino & Bienes, the agency only made a "brief and very limited" examination of Madoff." Avellino & Bienes was shut down by the SEC in 1993, the year Levitt took charge. Levitt also gave a special exemption to Enron, exempting it from accounting rules. This special exemption led directly to the Enron scam and the subsequent meltdown of the company, which took down a major chunk of the economy with it. It also led to the discovery of similar fraud at many other companies, fraud that got its start in the Clinton years. If I was going to pick one individual who was most responsible for the rampant fraud of the Clinton years, it would have to be Art Levitt. “Earlier today, I ordered America's armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces. Their mission is to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors… “Other countries possess weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles. With Saddam, there is one big difference: He has used them. Not once, but repeatedly. Unleashing chemical weapons against Iranian troops during a decade-long war. Not only against soldiers, but against civilians, firing Scud missiles at the citizens of Israel, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Iran. And not only against a foreign enemy, but even against his own people, gassing Kurdish civilians in Northern Iraq. ”The international community had little doubt then, and I have no doubt today, that left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will use these terrible weapons again. " Speech from the Oval Office by President William Clinton, explaining his attack on Iraq reported by The Associated Press Wednesday, December 16, 1998 http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/special/clinton/stories/clintontext121698.htm Bill Clinton was impeached on December 19, 1998. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENAV_UoIfgc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysmwASJKCDc&feature=related Do a google video search on "democrat wmd" to see how many Democrats insisted that Saddam had WMD, all the way back to Al Gore in 1992. more

Resolved Question: Regarding Adoption, how would you classify yourself?

Because the opinion demographics of this section seem to be particularly one-sided, at least based on what I've seen. Very simple question: when it comes to the topic of adoption how would you classify yourself? An Adoption Advocate? Anti-Adoption? Experienced Adoptee? Anti-International Adoption only? Fence-Sitter? :) "Open-minded" Advocate? "It's peoples own business" Advocate? Or come up with something on your own...perhaps you agree with me that such labels might be a little too simplistic and that there's truth in lots of classifications? You don't have to give a lengthy reason why, just what would you classify yourself concerning the topic of adoption. Very simple. Only doing this because I want to get a feel for how the users here see themselves. Thanx :)Allanas - it's whatever you want to call it :)LinnyG - I realize the answers often speak for themselves, but thank you for humoring me anyways :)Dorian - fantastic answer, thanks! Resolved Question: Has anybody hear what Obama's top economic advisor said at the "World Economic Forum"?

"I am very optimistic about our support for an integrated global economy. For a whole set of reasons-the diversity of its population, the openness of its institutions, the way in which it serves as a magnet for people from all over-I think the United States is very, very well positioned to gain from increased global integration. But it's going to have to work for people if it's going to be politically sustainable-and that's why the jobs, the credit agenda are so very crucial." I don't see why more firms don't try to set up offices in developing countries. I am not talking about BRIC. More along the lines of Central and South America, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and others. I'd think that there would be less competition for deals here. The offices could be run by mostly graduates of that nation's universities. Maybe the deals would not be that big, but an experienced group should not have travel supporting themselves if they are a small boutique focusing in this "international business." Any thoughts? Just thought it was interesting. more

Resolved Question: Why do I only get this problem with African Americans?

I'm Mexican, I own a laundromat here at the border. I studied college in the USA, I know laundromats are very common in the USA. As cheap as laundromats in the USA are, college students are sometimes too cheap to go to laundromat, so they often do their laundry at friend's house. Even so, laundromats are common in the USA, and they are very cheap compared to laundromats in Mexico. Laundromats are a luxury in Mexico, so they are more expensive. All of my machines are American, and they work with quarters. The machines work with 3 quarters, BUT the price of a machine it's clearly stated on the walls in HUGE BOLD letters; a machine costs 20 PESOS (1.53 US Dollars.) My laundromat is very close to the International Bridge, so a lot of American people come my laundromat. Whenever White people come, they look at the prices, they pay me, and I insert my quarters into the machines. It's a simple business transaction. Whenever Black people come here, they go straight to the machines, and insert their own quarters. I tell them they have to pay me 20 PESOS per machines, and I'm the one who inserts the quarters. Then they always start yelling telling me they are American, and that's the way it's done in the America. So I have to tell them they are not in the States, and that they need to pay what's stated on the walls. They always either: 1.- Pay me, and won't stop cursing the entire time. 2.- Get angry, start cursing, and storm out. 3.- Get angry, refuse to pay me, and force me to disconnect the machines, give them their quarters back, and ask them to leave. I've had this business for over 2 years. I've never EVER had this problem with White people. But it has become expected whenever a Black person comes by. Why does this happen? more

Resolved Question: I have intentions of opening my own business on the outskirts of Vegas...?

I have the theory that prostitutes are going to sell themselves whether it is legal or not. Now, on the outskirts of Vegas it is legal, so I figure, why not open a business specific to housing them, and giving them a safe environment to sell themselves in. Within this business there will also be a gentleman's club and a bar. I have no experience in owning a business and wish to do this as soon as possible. I see this going far, possibly international. What do I need to know or do before starting this adventure. Note: I'm going to a strip club tomorrow night to learn some pointers from the strippers for my gentleman's club-so I will have no problem with that portion. more

Resolved Question: What exactly is a business school?

I always thought it's for postgrad students that want to do an MBA or some business relevant masters. That's what I thought. But now I'm a bit confused. For instance. Macquarie University in Australia offers a Master of International Business and a Master of Commerce. But it's taught by the faculty of Business & Economics and not their business school. At other schools the same majors are taught by the business school. So why are some of these Masters offered by the university and others such as the MBA always by the Business School? more

Resolved Question: Will secular Turkey and Albania ever become the full-fledged and equal members of the secular European Union?

I mean both the parties are secular, then why are the hurdles being created for Turkey and Albania to join the secular EU? All 27 members have veto power on deciding whether Turkey should join or not. It means Turkey will have to have good relations with every single secular EU member but neighboring Greece creates problems for Turkey all the time and it'll definitely veto Turkey's entry into the secular Union. Turkish economy is larger than many current secular EU members. Turkey scrapped the death penalty, a must condition to join secular EU. It is liberal toward homosexuals. In fact Christian Greece doesn't allow homosexuals to join some ranks in the army. So if intolerant Greece can be a member then why not Turkey? Or the problem is something else? Albania was one of the fastest growing country in Europe in 2009. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albania#Economy an excerpt "Still, Albania has shown potential for economic growth, as more and more businesses relocate there and consumer goods are becoming available from emerging market traders as part of the current massive global cost-cutting exercise. Albania and Cyprus are the only countries in Europe that recorded economic growth in the first quarter of 2009. In its latest report, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Albania and Cyprus recorded increases of 0.4% and 0.3%, respectively." So if Cyprus can be a member then why not Albania? Or the problem is something else? Or the problem is something else and these two countries don't fit into THE must condition required to join the truly secular EU? May be the Philippines and East Timor can apply for membership according to THE must required condition. more

Resolved Question: Why would anyone want to live in China?

Well... >Salaries for expats are usually $50K USD per year starting. >Benefits usually include $3 to $5K housing allowance, driver, high-end insurance, relocation services, a maid (live-in if you want), full tuition cover for kids at international schools, 4+ weeks vacation time, 2+ return flights paid for (usually business class), et... >Life in China is not boring. You meet people from all over, have great shopping options, great nightlife (in the big cities), people are generally thinner and better looking, there's no punk kids with their pants hanging under their asses, taxi's cost nothing, etc... >China doesn't a law against everything like the west. There's nobody to tell you what you can and can't do, if you're at the park and you want a beer, you have one. If you're at a restaurant and you want a smoke, have one. You don't have to constantly show your identification to everyone, there's ridiculous helmet laws, etc... >People are very relaxed. There's almost no violent crime in China. There's few if any mentally disturbed youths drunk off their face threatening people (there are some young western guys though). Many have asked why China. I ask why not?Eugene: Thanks for the link, those are some good pics.ʀ ƹ y ɳ ɑ: You are correct. Speaking against officials is bad. Resolved Question: Can you correct my writing assignment?

Can you correct my writing assignment? Please feel free to add or delete words. Thanks in advance! I enrolled in this class so I can improve my language business skills. Communication is the key in succeeding in any type of business. My communication skills are not the best, so that is why I am here to improve my skills. My enrollment in this particular class is also important as it is something which is a requirement for my major. I chose Business Management as my major because I enjoy learning about tourism and lodging. Basically, everything involves business. For example, marketing, human resources and so many other fields play a role in business. Business Management consists of working with different levels of co-workers. Also, a business person provides services to their consumers. In my spare time, I like to browse different internet sites based on airlines and the hotel industry. In the past, I have had the opportunity to work in the airline business. I enjoyed it so much that I want to continue in this field. In conclusion, one day I want to provide charter flights for international clients. more

Resolved Question: Travel Project to Venice, Italy, good choice?

I have a travel project to do for my International Business class. Is venice, italy a good choice? we are given a $3000 US dollars budget. this is for 2 people going on a 7 day 6 nite trip. using the $3000, we need to decided to have the airline tickets without travel agents, hotel to stay in, at least one different restaurant a day, 2 alternate transportations (no taxis of rental cars), landmark visits, 2 activities( ex: horseback riding, hiking). we are allowed to choose when we go so the airlines are cheaper. Our starting location is texas. Do you think venice, italy is a good place to go with just $3000? It transfers to euros so the money is 2,126.94 in euros. I don't know the average spending a day in europe so i'm not sure if that is enough for the whole trip. give me some feedback on whether or not i should stick with venice or whether i should choose a different location. it has to be out of the US. if you suggest another one, pls include why it would be better. thanks! more

More than 100 of the 120 or so attendees are “regulars,” invited every year. Typically, five or so participants are first-timers. A potential president is likely to be invited once but tossed aside when his political star dims, as former Vice President Dan Quayle can attest. Resolved Question: Why does the Chinese Government censor/block the internet?

For 6 months, an entire region of China is without internet access because the Government blocked their access and texting and international calls. One woman had to travel 250 miles on rail to get to an internet cafe to use regular email. In July, China promised they would gradually return basic internet sites. It's now January and they still say they will gradually unblock the internet, they have not done so yet. One woman had a successful small business going before the internet was blocked off completely by the Chinese Govt, now her business can't possibly continue. Even posting this yahoo question puts me at risk to ever go to China, if their Government finds I even posted a question like this, I could be stuck in a prison for questioning their authority. Why is the Chinese Government like this? Those people in the region with blocked internet were punished for a protest 6 months ago, they swear on their lives had they known this would happen, they will never again question the Government. For goodness sakes, they want their internet unblocked. more

Resolved Question: If for 1 week you were given unlimited, unchecked ruling power over the USA and the changes you made...?

were permanent; what would you change? Here are a few of mine: Do away with income tax and set up a flat sales tax (we will actually get more money because people who don't pay income tax will still have to buy things) Set up time limits on welfare and other government programs for those who are capable of working (no longer than 2 years, most people can fnd a job within that time). Even if on assistance make it manadatory to do so many hours of community service that way we are not just paying these people to sit around and watch tv. Keep Social Security but make it independent from the general fund and only give it to people who paid into it. (no more free rides to aliens, legal or otherwise, who come over at the age to draw it) Change the justice system to where the punishment fits the crime and make prisons a miserable place to be instead of club mead-no cable tv, no weight room, make all criminals work from sun up to sun down (we have to work why shouldn't they) Strictly enforce border laws and deport all who didn't come here legally. Do away with political correctness. All people should be able to speak their minds without the fear of someone yelling racism every 5 seconds when none exist. Political correctness was invented so one section of the population could guilt/harrass another section into silence and compliance. Give the states back their power and shrink the federal government to where they only ran international relations, the military and handled national disasters. Repeal laws that give international agencies power over our own government. Raise import taxes on finished products and reduce them on raw materials. Give incentives to businesses who remain in the USA and penalize those who move overseas. To the person who disagreed with the import taxes part...it would not hurt us as we are the largest consumer. plus it would make or products more competitive on the world market. more

Resolved Question: What Is Holistic Health?

Webster's Third International Dictionary defines "holistic" as "emphasizing the organic or function relation between parts and wholes, rather than atomistic approach." In relation to health this means recognizing that all disease processes involve the whole person. Within the physical dimension, disease in one system of the body effects the other systems. Similarly, imbalance in any one dimension of existence-physical, mental, spiritual or social-affects the other dimensions. "This is Wholism: living each moment and experience to the hilt, with full mind awareness, spiritual awareness; letting oneself be washed and cleansed by the pure stream of thankfulness and appreciation" ( Frank Atkinson). Health is balance of all aspects of your being-physical, mental, social and spiritual. When it comes to balancing your own health, you always let someone else do it. You can manage and balance your own household, you do fine in your own business, you manage and balance your your checkbook, but when it comes to balancing your health, you quit. Why? Because you shy away from the work it takes to balance your body chemistry. When it comes to your own thinking and emotions you quit and go to a psychiatrist, counselor, your minister, your friends, the card reader, the palm reader, the tea leaf reader or the crystal ball gazer when you yourself could do a much better job. Of course, you need tools to do so and that's my purpose on yahoo answer(alt med) to help give you reliable Info so you will have those tools to help. The daring is yours, the work is yours, the determination is yours, but God is with those who help themselves and the Lord is with you. What's your purpose? more
