RPI hosts event for business leaders

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is hosting a one-day event designed to help business leaders make decisions.

On April 2, Rensselaer's Lally School of Management & Technology is hosting the program titled, "Forum on Business, Technology, and Ethics."

The event is scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m. at the Russell Sage Lab auditorium.

Participants include former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Peter Pace; Albert Erisman, founder and director of the Institute for Business, Technology, and Ethics, as well as the director of the Center for Integrity in Business at the School of Business and Economics at Seattle Pacific University; and Rensselaer President Shirley Ann Jackson.

A workshop is scheduled the next day titled "Should I...Shouldn't I?" The workshop will feature Erisman, along with William G. more

Coke to expand Russian juice business after Pepsi deal - paper

MOSCOW, March 21 (RIA Novosti) - Coca-Cola may buy the food producer Wimm-Bill-Dann's juice business in Russia after rival beverage Pepsi purchased a 75.5% stake in Russia's largest juice company, a business daily said on Friday.

PepsiCo and the Pepsi Bottling Group (PBG) are to jointly acquire a 75.5% stake in the Lebedyansky juice company, which has an estimated market share of around 30%, for $1.4 billion, Pepsi said on its website on Thursday.

The deal, which could be completed before the end of 2008, will make Pepsi - the world's second largest beverage producer - the leading juice maker in Russia, Kommersant said.

The market share of Pepsi's Tropicana juice brand was 1.9%, Coca-Cola's Multon juices accounted for 21.1%, and Lebedyansky juices for 30.6% of the Russian market in 2007. more

Resolved Question: Currently Confused About My Future...?

I'm 17 and currently being dragged under by the monstrosity called "College". ..and I am completely overwhelmed. Not by the applications themselves: I have already applied to all of them and been admitted to two of them. I'm pretty proud of that; some people end up rejected. But my parents keep bugging me: planning visits, pushing me to do really well grade wise (even though I already try hard!), telling me that I will have to work every summer in college, in general BREATHING DOWN MY NECK!!! And all of this has formed a picture: working hard at college, day in and day out, no more play or fun, grad school, then finding a job, to slave away at for the rest of my life. And all I can think is that running away is starting to look very appealing. I have to admit that I am naturally lazy, but its not the work load that is causing me unease. The problem is what i want to do/study. I want to major in History(preferably Asian/European), English(one of the few things I GET), Veterinary Medicine, International Business, Chinese/Japanese or German, and Agriculture. And as I've been told, I'm an idiot. I would have too 1) be a millionaire, 2) stay in college for the rest of my life, and 3) I still wouldn't be able to do all those things at once. So they're telling me to pick 2 at most. But I don't want to limit my life to those things. I actually just want to spend my life traveling: taking oxen carts and boats to travel among countries, with nothing but a backpack and a friend. Then again I also want to learn every language in the world (atleast semi-fluently), which is an impossible dream. So... I'm confused. And in need of advice. Maybe on which majors have a steady, enjoyable job after college or maybe if anyone knows of a USA gap year exchange program. Or maybe if there is anyone out there that would want to run away with me...but only as a last resort :P. I've read enough to know that runing away will never end happy or even happen (most get caught and shipped back to wear they belong). So just give me a piece of ur mind (no crappy comments like "...are you dumb!!" or "go get a reality check"), i'm asking for real, helpful, semi-serious answers. Some now are now dying of lung disease 8 years later. There is not much they can do about it at this point(Eight). There was also a report that 30% of New Yorkers suffered post-traumatic stress disorder. Over the next six months this came in the form of sleeping disorders, nightmares, alienation or estrangement and depressions. This is an unverifiable incidence since PTSD sufferers may not be aware (9/11). Whether or not a person can be medically classified as such, there is no denying that there are major emotional effects for many people. A cataclysmic event has a subconscious consequence of making us aware of the fragility of our existence. This is a moment to gain perspective on life and focus on those things that really matter. Most prominent is the need to connect with loved ones. Patriotism, altruism and religious spiritualism figure too. This has affected the lives of many new Yorkers who have an impact on us at a distance. And the list of heath related issues are huge. Who knew so much sickness could come from one event. This also started the war on terrorism the stated objectives of the war in the US are to protect the citizens of the US and allies, to protect the business interests of the US and allies at home and abroad, break up terrorist cells in the US, and disrupt the activities of the international network of terrorist organizations made up of a number of groups under the umbrella of al-Qaeda (War). this effected us by sending troops into Iraq and Afghanistan and taking them away from their families and not giving them real jobs and possibly effecting the products we rely on everyday. The war on Terrorism continues today and remains the main story in the media as people sit and watch the war against terrorism. More safety precautions came into play after the attack and these are still are a big part of our normal life today. The airport wont allow you to have any bottles 3 oz. or bigger (prohibited). The event also started the US Patriot Act. The Act increases the ability of law enforcement agencies to search telephone, e-mail communications, medical, financial, and other records; eases restrictions on foreign intelligence gathering within the United States; expands the Secretary of Treasury’s authority to regulate financial transactions, particularly those involving foreign individuals and entities; and enhances the discretion of law enforcement and immigration authorities in detaining and deporting immigrants suspected of terrorism-related acts (USA). We lose major privacy and have to be careful about what we say and no one wants to think while they talk. Another thing that was created after 9/11 was the Department of Homeland Security is a Cabinet department of the United States federal government with the primary responsibilities of protecting the territory of the U.S. from terrorist attacks and responding to natural disasters (United). So now the government is trying to be safer and make sure that another disaster like this will never happen again. On a last note the 9/11 event still effects us today and will continue to do so. So much pain and suffering has come from this event, with heath issues as well as a war. But has made America stronger with the USA patriot act and homeland security. So even in dark times there will always be a light at the end of the tunnel, we just have to keep going. more

Resolved Question: Good budgeting tips for an upcoming wedding?

My fiancee and I had our first date on Sunday October 10th, 2004 so we always celebrate our anniversary as 10/10. He proposed to me on 10/10/08 on our four year anniversary and so I really have my heart set on getting married on Sunday October 10th, 2010. 10/10/10 is a very special date to us. However, we are worried we won't be able to have as nice of a wedding as we'd really like since there are budget restrictions at this time in our lives. We are only 23, we are trying to pay for him to get through college and we both work full time but we don't make a lot. I have a new car payment I'm paying off until May of '11 and we're trying to move out together. In this economy, our families aren't able to help much, so we'll have to absorb almost all of the wedding costs. My fiancee will have a career in international business within a couple of years making a lot more money, so we considered maybe a small wedding loan for the meantime which would easily be paid off in the near future. Of course there's obvious downsides to this option, I'm aware, but saving up any respectable amount of money toward the wedding is proving very difficult for us. And of course there is the option of waiting to get married, but then we would miss out on our special date and our grandparents are getting old, and well, I'd like them all to be there. Hi guys, I have done piano performance for 13 years and finished one year university and quit. I thought I should do any sorta of business course to get a good-money career. I also have an idea of doing my own business in the future when I have enough fund. What should I study in University? What qualification would be recognised and/or beneficial for me after 3 years of study to get a job that pays me fortune? I am also curious about Information System Technology course. What do they actually learn and what can they do after graduate? I am good with computers and people come to me to gain new information and stuff. I am also interested in science. but Time and Money won't allow me to study space science for example... I'm creative and work well. I do well anything that's given to me to do... :S I am thinking about Accounting&Finance / International business/ HR management/ Entrepreneurship. I thought about Management and Marketing as well but it seems rather dull. Or am I completely wrong? I looked through all the books and it talks about all the common sense that most of people would be able to do without the education. I have been offered bachelor of tourism - Event management/Marketing but decided not to accept it because it's too vocational, and it would be hard to get a job ( and pay would be low compare to others...).. Resolved Question: How to get my motivation to work back\ to get a promotion?

Hi all, I am working in an international company for 1,5 years as a PA. I have a MSc degree in the field of company's business. When I was taken as a PA (there were no other jobs at that time and this was at least correlated with my education) I was promised that I would do more things than a PA, that I would be given technical assignments etc. So I took the job. But since that time not much has changed. I have 10 bosses and I kept asking them for more things to do etc but wasnt given much. Everybody in the office says that it is crazy that with my education I am still a PA and have the losest job group, but there is nothing happenning, just words. My main line manager just changed and now I have a new lady boss who just arrived in the country and made quite clear in her speech that she needs an PA and that in some future I could do more things. But it is very hard for me to wait for something, it might come in 10 years....I think that 1.5 years is already too much for such a simple job as mine and i do want to move in the company, because I like it here. Also there are no jobs around at the moment. I am trying to push things but have 0 result :( I cannot keep up my motivation now, I was refused a technical training this year in HR with a reason of being PA. And this is a visious circle really. There are no other jobs around now as well. I have good relations with everyone and even VP HR, but as i have said it is just bla bla bla "what a girl like you is doing at this position". Finally it is up to my line manager to initiate some promotion and she is new and not eager to do it yet (and how long is yet i have no idea). Please advise if you have ever been in situation where you have been over educated for a role or over qualified and had to keep up or change the situation. more

What do you do when your kind and sweet husband turns out to be still kind and sweet but lazy. My husband hasn't been working for 9 months, I've been the one paying for EVERYTHING. It was ok for a while, but now it's really getting on my nerves. We've only been married 17 months, and he's only worked for a few months of that on and off. It's not even just the fact that he's not working, but also about what he's doing with his time when he's not working. I'm very big on self development, I'm a highly motivated and ambitious person, I do a 9 to 5 IT job and then come home, have a bath, have something to eat and start working on my home business I'm setting up. Obviously I realise that not everyone is the same as me and I don't expect him to be as driven as I am. But he just seems to be lazy, he reads loads of those motivational books, but actually does nothing, once he's read them. When I met him he was an international student, and was obviously restricted in the kind of work he could do and the hours. I really thought that was what was holding him back from getting anywhere and that once we married, he'd be able to get a decent job and we'd share the financial responsibility of running the home. What's actually happened is that he spends a couple of hours a day applying for Security Jobs, which he keeps getting turned down for (which I don't get as he has an SIA license) and office jobs that are way out of his league. I've even asked him if wants me to review his applications for him, he says ok, but then continues applying for jobs, without asking me. Since I've known him, he hasn't learnt one skill, I've tried to encourage him to pick up some of the IT skills I have, but he's not interested. I bought him an Microsoft Office book to help him develop his administrative skills, and that ended up the shelf. He's not a man who's good with his hands either. I don't know what to do, yes he's a lovely and supportive husband, but he lacks drive and ambition and the desire to develop himself. The sad thing is that, that has always been one of the biggest turn offs for me in a man. Day by Day I'm going off him more, I DETEST lazy men. I don't know what to do about this. I don't want my marriage to end, he really is a lovely human being, but we can't go on like this. I resent the fact that I'm carrying all the load. Plus I'm scared that if he's not capable of getting just a basic job, then what hope is there that he'll be a good provider in future. He wants us to have children now, but I'm scared I'm going to be the one who is o carry the financial burden of raising them and a home. Am I being unfair or impatient? PLEASE HELP!!!!I'm not pushing him to anything, honestly, I've just made suggestions, because he hasn't shown any real interest in anything. I know that everyone has their own area of expertise, but at the same time I do believe that once you have a family it's not all about what you want, but what is best for the family. I'm a 10th grade high school student, trying to figure out what I want to do in college. My thoughts keep going back to International Business, but I'd rather focus more on finance over business but still on a global level. Resolved Question: migrating after marriage... what are our options?

My boyfriend and I in our midtwenties and planning to marry in about 2 years time. We live in Jakarta, Indonesia. Because of the pollution here, I've been having health problems. I've lived in medium-sized major cities in the US, Australia, and Europe, and have always been a healthy girl. But since living in Jakarta I've been suffering frequent colds, perpetual headaches, and very low stamina, especially on and around my period. It may be anemia but I haven't checked because I don't really trust the doctors here. My boyfriend--a young lawyer by profession--has been a globetrotter like me, and has expressed interest in living elsewhere, although we haven't really started any serious planning. He was born in Switzerland, but as the son of an Indonesian embassy employee dual citizenship was prohibited so his ID card states Jakarta as his birthplace instead of Geneva. He graduated both his bachelors and masters in law from The Netherlands, whose laws are the basis of Indonesian law. Likewise, Dutch law is concordant with French law and the law of other countries based on Ancient Roman law. He specialises in corporate and business law, and has worked in Holland as well as Indonesia. I have a Canadian permanent residence, which my family and I have earned through legal procedures that started when I was still a minor. I have never lived there. My parents and I visited Canada in 2007 to activate the permit (I was 22), but we are required to reenter in 5 years time ie 2012 (I will be 27). In 2011 I expect to graduate with a bachelors in performing arts communication and in 2012 a masters in journalism or broadcasting. Over the past 3 years I have worked on and off as translator/interpreter, master of ceremony (hosting small concerts and seminars), and hosting a radio talk show. Recently I've decided to cross over to brand management/advertising as a copywriter, hoping that it would land me a fun but challenging job supporting quirky creative professionals like graphic designers, professional photographers, product developers, and others in charge of advertising/brand development campaigns. I plan to join campus clubs to start my portfolio and hope that it would land me with internships or projects elsewhere so I would at least have some experience by the time I migrate. In the future I'd prefer to work on a freelance basis, in case my would-be-husband might get transferred frequently, plus I would like my time to be relatively flexible so we can raise a family. OK, so in short my boyfriend has ties with Europe and I have ties with Canada. Once married, we want to migrate together somewhere (not necessarily Canada or Switzerland although those are the more obvious options for now). I do NOT prefer EU countries, although I'm not totally against it either. We need to prepare how we're going to live overseas and still be able to thrive in our professions. The way I have seen others do this is by joining a multinational company that happens to have an office in Jakarta, then climb the corporate ladder to get transferred elsewhere... how would this work out for a lawyer? (I'm more concerned about him having the fixed job, as I expect to work more as an independent professional in the future) Where can we find more information to explore our options so we can start preparing ahead of time? This is what I have so far: If I were elected president of the U.S. in 2012, I would try to reduce greenhouse emissions for the good of mankind. The main goal of my campaign would be to lower the cost of alternative energy sources for the public. First of all, I would give tax incentives to civilians who purchased fuel efficient or electric cars, with the electric car getting the larger incentive. I would also give tax breaks and additional grants to those companies who researched alternative energy methods, such as solar panels, hydropower, and wind mills. Furthermore, I would hire scientists to design and build me a luxurious solar powered jet for my international travels. Thus, I would not be hypocritical. Also, funding public awareness of energy savings would be imperative to my campaign. The main focus of this campaign would be how much money a person can save each year through simply unplugging items when they aren’t in use. It's a fact that in the US wages have been declining for more than a decade for most people based on historical figures of wages. At the same time jobs have been shifted abroad to places like China, India and the Philippines It's all logical based on our economic model. With all this though, the average joe in America has been put in the world labor pool and now his wealth is based on international wage rates. He can only expect more decline based on this. The financial future for the majority of people in America looks bleak to put it bluntly. But those at the top still have the system working for them and the are not tied to any one country. I am currently a "part-time" musician, meaning I still have a dayjob at afternoon in that is non-music, which honestly, i dislike it a lot (it's a family-business, in a factory). I really aspire to be a serious full-time musician. Now, to be honest (and I don't mean to boast at all, but i simply stating the fact as it is), many -if not all- people have told me that i'm not only passionate, but also very talented in music (some even told me that i have such 'rare' musical talent, including a "perfect-pitch" too, and 'imaginary unique' mind) , and above all, there're even some professional music people (local, and also from overseas countries such as U.S, Japan) whom told me that my music compositions is much more suited for "international" level, rather than local, then what should i do? (to make it easy, let's just imagine if you were me..) : 1. should i just right-away jump & take a chance to fly to my 'dream' country, for example: Japan, and at there, starting to build connections with people, and building my career there (easier to get recognized/noticed, than if i were only emailing from my home country here?) OR, 2. or 'conventionally', should i play-it-safe by just focusing/concentrating for music career at my home-country (ie: writing songs for other artists, TV jingles, also forming my own band, Solo project, etc) here? and after perhaps like 1-2 years, THEN I can start looking for "building" the international path, instead of fully risking it 100% by flying there?.. in other words: start building 'slowly' , instead of 'just go for it, risking it 100%' ? OR even 3. stop "dreaming" going "big internationally" , it's very very very hard. so might as well just focus building my career 100% totally here in my home country? I am not from the United States, but would like to study Accounting there. Most likely I will have to go back home after I am done studying, so I am curious to what extend accounting differs in the world. I do not want to have a degree I can't do anything with. I looked online and it says that the United States uses GAAP accounting. But in Europe they seem to mainly use IFRS Accounting if I understood that correctly. So does that mean an Accounting degree from the States could not be used in Europe? It also says online (Wikipedia) that countries in the world will want to use the same accounting standards in the near future, so that the books can be understood by investors from everywhere. But what accounting will that be and where can I study that? I only see schools offering GAAP accounting in the United States. Resolved Question: Suggestions for landing a job in higher education?

I recently graduated from college with my bachelor's degree in communications and international business. I believe that I'm pretty qualified to work at a university, and I have a game plan for my future. During my undergraduate education I worked at my admissions office where I conducted campus tours, advised students, etc... I also worked at my news office and helped in designing the layout. I participated in a study abroad program which allowed me to interact with students from many different cultures. As for my future, I plan to work a solid year doing anything at a university, being a program assistant, admissions, study abroad office, news office, etc.. pretty much anything that will give me higher education experience. I would then like to earn my master's degree in international affairs, or cross cultural communication and then be eligible to work with international students. Eventually I'd like to earn my Ph.D. So I KNOW that's what I want to do, and I've been applying for a ton of positions at universities, but I have had no responses whatsoever.
