Internet useful tool in drawing business

The Internet has become virtually ubiquitous. And small businesses have noticed.

As a result, small companies often promote themselves online with their own Web sites.

Web designers are plentiful.

But Wpromote in El Segundo will design your Web site and help draw online traffic from potential customers.

Known as search-engine marketing, Wpromote uses its knowledge of how key words typed into online search engines such as Google or Yahoo generate results. Wpromote's job is to make sure its clients are among the top results.

For most results, clients pay a fee each time a potential customer clicks on their link from the search results.

Search-engine marketing might make sense for Wpromote's large clients such as Sony or wine.com, which seek nationwide or even global reach. more

Underage beer buyers cause businesses to stumble

In an undercover beer sting Thursday night, the Metro DUI squad and Germantown Police visited 24 restaurants and businesses from one end of the suburb to the other to see whether alcohol would be sold to an underage "operant."

One grocery and four restaurants were charged.

According to Sgt. Reggie Reed of Metro DUI, all establishments that sell alcoholic beverages must card buyers. Places chosen for the beer sting come from citizen tips.

But looking at a person's ID doesn't always prevent sales of alcohol to minors. Reed said problems sometimes occur when businesses miscalculate a person's age.

"The business can get complacent," Reed said. "They just don't check or if they do check they just don't pay attention."

Over the past two years, Germantown has struggled to curb underage alcohol sales. more

Small-business adviser: It's OK to pay yourself when starting a business

I am launching my business this year. Should I budget a salary for myself? How do I figure what that should be?</strong></p><p>Whether to pay yourself during the startup phase of your new venture is a question posed by most new business owners. While some entrepreneurs initially pay themselves just enough to get by, others pay themselves what they are worth in the marketplace.</p><p>The overriding answer to the question of whether you should compensate yourself in the early stages of business is “yes.”</p><p>One compensation option is to pay yourself only what you truly need to meet your financial obligations until the business is profitable. To determine your personal needs, you can develop a personal budget that lists all of your living expenses and any additional obligations.</p><p>Because many startup ventures require time to break even and become profitable, it is critical that the income you earn from the business covers your personal needs for an extended period of time. more

Resolved Question: Hoosiers: Should our governor Daniels run for president in 2012?

I think he has done a bang up job. He took office with the State of Indiana being 2 billion in the red. When the recession hit, we had million in surplus. Meanwhile at the same time the liberal State of Michigan to the north languished because of their irresponsible liberal spending. Gov. Daniels has done a far better job then his predecessor, Gov. Evan Bayh. Case in point; When the streamlined sales tax became law under Gov. Bayh, the State sent out notices to businesses TWO WEEKS after the fact. Small business folks had to dig deep into their pockets and pony up for what was not collected. There was an even harsher ramification for some folks because they placed work bids under the old law and then had to pony up for the sales tax difference. We worked for free because of Gov. Bayh. The attitude under Bayh's administration was that it is up to each business person to monitor the state's web site. This seems like a great excuse, but totally lame.... At that time, the Indiana State web site informational presentation was a quagmire. After getting burnt by the streamlined sales tax, I asked the State under Bayh's administration for email alerts.... Their response was "NO, read the web page." Gads, a small business owner with Sunday needs to spend it with family. I knew what the State did was immoral and probably illegal, but sometimes it's better to choke down a bitter pill. BTW, I wrote Gov. Bayh and asked him who were the rocket scientists that created the streamline sales tax. He responded by turning me over to the State audit office. Snicker! Snicker! My ducks were all in a row and the audit lady left with nothing. Ha! I think Gov. Daniels would make a viable candidate. What say you? .. . . more

Resolved Question: web advertiser stole my idea?

I found an opportunity to advertise my bosses business and receive a commission on the web. We inquired for advertising rates. When the website found out what our product was they doubled the advertising rate. We began updating our website to accommodate the new business. The website we inquired to, took our product and put it in their store on their own with their own manufacturer. In the beginning the sales rep was too eager to find out what we were doing. I am not sure if she stole it for herself (she had several cheesy emails like @carsdirect.com and appears to be pregnant) or if the owner decided to take it or if it was a group decision. I feel it was pretty cut throat business for a site that talks about professionalism. What are my options or should I .... A) Clone there site B) Post on ripoff report D) Discuss it with the owner (What can I say, make him aware, royalty's, job offer, will I still be able to compete or will they keep stealing?) C) Find an investor that wants to go after them for sport more

Resolved Question: Abortion, desensitized selfishness ignorance or what.?

Fetal development seven weeks after conception. Your baby's toes form and baby's arms grow, bones develop and bend at the elbows. Your baby's eyelids and ears continue developing. By the end of this week, your baby may be close to 3/4 inch long. (18 to 22 millimeters). http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/medical/IM04050 My question, look at the Mayoclinic web site, then answer whether or not this is a human being ? YES or NO. then. Since 1955 over 50 million abortions have been performed in the U.S.A. What do you think the I.R.S. would do if you told them, 50 million American's failed to pay their taxes since 1970. Fifty, 1 million population cities gone or 100 half million population cities gone. Cars sales gone. home owners gone, schools not built, business's not created. over 50 million home grown U.S. born patriotic citizens disappeared since 1955 and replaced with "Non-American Way" immigrants ! What have we really done- GAINED anything? or LOST anything? Is Twisted saying a baby at birth is not alive because it can't take care of its self, so we can toss em in the dumper ?Member Jane could learn a few things from Uniquechild !Nate does not even "get it".So which is it? The problem is that women seem to want it both ways. When its convenient and advantageous, any degree of life is "a baby". And this is publically supported by oft-heard statements from women who have just discovered they are pregnant-- "I'm going to have a baby" (or "we're going to have a baby"). So at least anecdotally, there is a good case to be made that women (people) consider life and babies to begin the moment they find out. Or another example such as in the case of an assault-- the woman will claim "s/he tried to kill my baby", which again an assertion that what she is carrying in her belly is "a baby". see: http://www.lifenews.com/state4464.html Murfreesboro, TN (LifeNews.com) -- A Tennessee man has been charged with two counts of murder for killing his pregnant girlfriend and her unborn child after she refused his request to get an abortion. Tarance Nelson is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of Tonya Johnson, 36, & her baby.I quote, Member Jane, " It is things like calling an embryo a baby that will cause you to be overly-sensitive ". see ; http://letters.mobile.salon.com/mwt/broadsheet/feature/2009/04/15/sex_ed/view/index22.html But let's take a more middle of the road approach-- let's say, just for kicks (and using the definition supplied by the Arkansas Supreme Court, which is of "competent jurisdiction" and thus is a credible source), that a person is a living fetus of 12 weeks or greater gestation. That's three months for the computationally-challenged. So if that's the definition we use, then men begin to have rights to their children at 12 weeks, regardless of the mother's objection. On the other hand, using the same definition, one might argue that men have the same right to a unilateral abortion up to that point as well. After all, according to the definition, nobody is forcing the woman to kill her _child_, merely to get rid of a "collection of cells". more

Resolved Question: Why are dems so excited about a 4.5% GDP?

Almost all of it is artificial due to temporary government spending. 1% is attributed to cash for clunkers, which will cause a massive sales drop for the last quarter. 0.5% is due to tax credit for first time homebuyers. 0.9 % is due to a change in levels of inventory, to avoid getting stuck with unsold goods, businesses are cutting inventories. This leaves only a 0.4% growth. Which, more than likely will revert to a drop in GDP in the last quarter as the cash for clunkers and homebuyer tax credits are gone. So far, it looks like the porkulous has done nothing to help the economy, just put us all farther in debt. By the way, these statistics we taken off of MSNBC's web site. That should really burn you liberals butts. more

Voting Question: Ideas for promoting Etsy account.?

I just recently opened an Etsy account and have only sold one item so far. I don't have a lot of money and I'm trying to think of fun ways to promote my site. I already have posted the link on my Myspace, Facebook, and some of my forums. I've even bought a showcase for one day on Etsy and it helped bump up my views but not my sales. I want to maybe make some flyers or posters or like little business cards or something and leave them places or hand them out. Is this a bad idea? My one friend suggested making little origami stars or swans and writing the web address and leaving them in bathrooms and waiting rooms and handing them to cashiers at stores and stuff. Any other ideas? Thanks!I do have a craftster account. I put my link in my sig there and also in my sig on another forum I participate in. I did not know that craftster had a section for promoting Etsy though. Thanks! =] more

Resolved Question: Employers and business people who dont answer letters!!!?

I occassionally send out unsolicited initial contact emails to various shops, galleries, design stores, and employers who judging from their web site might have an interest in products and designs. I try to write short formal letters including contact details and one of two attachements of samples of my work and I rarely get any responses positve or negative . Usually I have checked these people's websites and there is nothing on them to suggest they will not read unsolicited query letters. how do I get thru to these people? I'm not making sales and they're missing out on products. I can not work in retail or admin or go to art and craft fairs and markets due to health and other problems but can do graphic design and other design work from home. i need to why why people dont answer query letters and how to spot or learn who will respond. Any ideas? P.S. if anyone who reads this is a buyer I can send a pdf portfolio to you. PPS Anyone using this post to annoy me with details of multilevel marketing schemes and similar scams will be reported for abuseThe reason I am using email for the initial contact is that I do not have a good phone voice. I have tried offering free samples. Result got ripped off by some guy who wanted book illos but after getting the free samples of part of a set never commissioned the full set. more

Voting Question: Where could I sell an almost completed online business?

I 'm trying to sell an online business I've been building for the last year or so. It's virtually ready for launch and I'm selling it with 40 domains, 3 hosting accounts, 2 reseller accounts and more. The business has huge potential to the right buyer but I don't know where to find people who may be interested. I've posted the business on the Warrior Forum but does anyone know anywhere else I could put it up for sale? I'd rather not have to pay because being short of cash is the reason for the sale. Resolved Question: Hostmonster: Should I blow my brains out or slice my wrists?

Hostmonster just deleted my entire web hosting account because they said I had too many "files." Actually, I have NO individual files. I only have about 15 Joomla sites and nothing else. And there are no file storage aspects to any of the Joomla sites. They advertise hosting for an unlimited number of Joomla sites. I am not a porn purveyor or a music pirate!!! I did not use the account for electronic file storage. All my Joomla blog websites are for non-profit groups such as dog rescue. I used my account legitimately and paid twice for an annual subscription. I DID NOT exceed my bandwidth or my storage limits. And the Hostmonster home page says nothing about "number of files" limits, which appears to be even more important than bandwidth. Their terms of service also gives NO "number of files" limits. I even communicated with them by phone after receiving a warning to remove files to let them know that it was going to take me awhile to backup and such since my father had just passed away and my mother was hospitalized for an emergency and I am her only caretaker. What hindered me was they kept locking me out so that I couldn't log in to my account in order to perform backup and removal procedures. This required installing Joomlapack on all my sites. I also notified them that all the files on my hosting account were Joomla files and necessary for the operation of Joomla. Needless to say, when I logged in today to complete the back up operation, there was a message saying "your account has been deleted." I called and they said they had refunded my money for the balance of the year!!!! AND they had not kept a backup of the files, which they deleted 2 weeks ago... I can't believe I actually used to refer people with business sites to this company. For now, the only thing I can do is send an email to the hundreds of people on my web design mailing list telling them to move their stuff pronto to another host. Instead of being sympathetic for a long time customer and trying to help me out due to the death in my family, (let's try "I'm sorry your father died.") instead they rudely quoted stock answers about their terms of service containing a note about file limits (along with a million other legalities.) They failed to address the reason they don't state limits on their sales page which are critical. When I signed up I even asked them if there were any other critical limits I needed to know about and they said "no." I reviewed their terms of service and I see NOWHERE in it that tells the number of files one can host. There is absolutely NOTHING that addresses file limits. Here is the TOS link http://www.hostmonster.com/cgi/info/terms.html NOTE: There is no tool or other place in the control panel or anywhere on their website for a member to monitor number of files used. They claim you have to call them to get that information, which is also not in the Terms of Service. more

Resolved Question: Can you give the missing info and details on the Montel Williams Living Well Health Master Blender?

Can you give the missing info and details on the Montel Williams Living Well Health Master Blender? i saw Montel Williams on an info-commercial today. i watched for almost the entire hour and decided i wanted to buy his blender. during the show i called the number displayed on the screen several times and found that it was not a working number. unusual. that has never happened before. i wanted to buy but i needed details first. like besides the pitcher, are there any removable parts. are the blades prone to rust if left moist. does the pitcher have any type of warranty. is the pitcher plastic or glass. it looks to be plastic, but what kind. does it break easy. if so, then how difficult is it to get a new one. how much will you charge for a new one. with a 100 year warranty on the motor that is attached to the pitcher, it seems that the pitcher would be involved. i need this clarified. how many complaints of broken pitchers are there. you know, things that i did not see on t.v. i got curious enough to bring up the website. the first thing i wanted to do was to see the "buy now" button. strange. the check the order button was very big. what about people who wanted to buy. usually a web site is geared toward sales, not follow up. it took me about five minutes to find the sale/buy now link. i did not like that. that is a crappy design. the buy now button should be as large or larger than the order status button. by now i was not wanting to buy this thing. it presentation was so poorly put together for a person like me. and i assume that there are thousands of people like me. i felt i wanted to talk to someone first. so i looked up the contact information. i did not see an address. i did not see a working 800 phone number. and the only email i found was "To check the status" by now i feel the company is not customer friendly and does not deserve my business. if i am irritated before i try to buy, then what am i to expect later. do you know the answers?I found out from others that the product on the commercial is not the offered to buy and there is no picture of the low grade product. You have to upgrade to buy the one on the commercial. Also, if you cancel, it may cost you 50.00 or more because you don't get the shipping and handling back, eventhough you don't have the product. Plus I found out that it will ultimately cost you about 350.00 for this 199.99 blender. I also saw that you can buy a new pitcher with a motor for about 50.00 but why .... there is supposed to be a 100.00 year warranty on the motor that is not detachable from the pitcher? Maybe it is the low grade blender part? Wow, they should have put more information and a reachable phone number. more

Resolved Question: I have built a Recruitment Consultancy website but now need a CMS - how on earth do I do that?

I am an experienced Recruitment Consultant who has decided to team up with a bunch of colleagues to go it on our own and start up our own Recruitment Consultancy. Now none of us are naturally gifted when it comes to html and computery stuff however we have managed to create our first draft of the website using Wix.com and I must admit that it is really starting to look quite snazzy. The problem is that we now need to develop a CMS that will make updating the site with our latest jobs and blogs nice and easy. We also want to be able to provide a system where candidates can supply their information (including CV) through the website directly on to our candidate database software. We are planning to use a piece of software called RDB Pro that will act as a database for all our candidates and clients. So we have the website and we have the database software but how on earth do we get/create a cms that can integrate with both and also let us upload and manage our web content easily. I know that in business one of the greatest hurdles to overcome is getting a system where the user can focus entirely on the stuff that generates the sales and doesnt have to muck about with all the technical mumbo jumbo and that is why I am so keen to get this bit right! We have not allowed anything in the budget for this so it will have to be something that is "home cooked". I dont mind spending a lot of time getting things right at this point as I feel it will be beneficial in he long term so am happy to spend hours mucking about learning how it can be done but would be gratefull if someone could point me in the right direction. Surely there are some open source applications that could help me out? more

Resolved Question: Who knew that barrera-autosales.com, autoaven, com and stars-auto.com are the same scamers?

Look at barrera-autosales.com, autoaven, com and stars-auto.com they have made some changes to the web page but it is still a scam site quote Denver News BBB Flooded With Complaints On 2 Auto Auction Sites Stars-Automart, Autoaven Sent Cease And Desist Letters POSTED: 12:41 pm MDT August 11, 2009 DENVER -- The Denver office of the Better Business Bureau said its telephone helpline has been jammed with calls from people across the country who are asking about two auto sales Web sites that claim to be headquartered in Denver. According to the BBB, calls have been nonstop and the BBB has sent a "cease and desist" notice regarding trademark infringement to the company because of a fake BBB report the sites link to that falsely shows the company with an A+ rating. The two Web sites list one physical address as 10701 W. Sixth Ave, but that address actually belongs to BBB Accredited business, Automotive Avenues, Inc. Another link goes to 3925 Monaco Parkway, which actually belongs to Cintas Document Management -- a paper shredding company. The two Web sites, www.stars-automart.com and www.autoaven.com, claim to offer sales of repossessed vehicles. The BBB said customers complain that once a majority payment is sent via MoneyGram to a Denver address, the company ceases communication. The company has not responded to the BBB. An Internet check shows the two domain names are registered to a private registration company in Sunnyvale, Calif. The BBB said it sent out the warning because on-delivery and Internet auction fraud were the top two complained-about fraud types at the Internet Crime Complaint Center. "The BBB takes complaints very seriously and does not want any more consumers to be victimized," a news release stated. TheDenverChannel attempted to contact the Web sites without success. The phone number listed on the site goes to a recording, which suggests callers contact them by e-mail. The same section of the stars-automart.com Web site lists a James Stewart as the owner. Voting Question: Do you think that I am underpaid?

I work in a small company of about 30 employees selling web solutions (web sites and shopping carts). I was hired for sales and that's what I started doing, but it turned into a lot more. I now do inside sales, I am the company blogger, I manage our business Facebook page and I manage our business Twitter. I have 2 bachelors degrees; One in Entrepreneurship and one in Business Administration from a good accredited 4 yr. school. This is my first job out of school and have been there 13 months. I started at 30k and received a 5% raise to 31,500 after 6 months. With 10% unemployment rate in my city, I'm nervous to ask for a raise because I can't afford to go without a job. I have a stay at home wife and a 2 year old daughter. I like my job for what it is just feel under paid. I think that I should be making 40k but feel that it is a lot to ask for. Any advice?I was given the raise before I had started these new tasks. The raise I was given was solely based on performance to that point. Any ideas on how much I should ask for?? more

Resolved Question: Ebay listings...how to make them look professional? like web pages...?

hi everyone I've got my own little business running, here's my website: http://www.pcgettafix.co.uk/ and business is slow these days, one of my strong points is selling gaming base units for approximately half the price everyone else does, my thinking is making small profits quickly rather than a possible big profit once in a while... so i want to get a couple of sales done on ebay, which will hopefully spark my business around... thing is, i don't know how to list my stuff looking really good and professional. for example, i've taken a link at random off ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-GeForce-9800GT-512-3-1-Dual-Core-Gaming-Computer_W0QQitemZ260414080553QQcmdZViewItemQQptZDesktop_PCs?hash=item3ca1e38629&_trksid=p3286.m63.l1177 now how do i got about making that? i have designed a table form template on dreamweaver, but from my experience u can't just copy the html and paste it into the ebay listing....as the images won't show up, does that mean...like..for every image i have to upload to photpbucket and leave the html code to each image in their respective "box" in the table form that i copy to ebay?? seems like a lot of effort..is there any other way? or like...another way i can get it to look like that listing?? please guys, any help with any detail would be great:)..and if you're after a great gaming base unit for dirt cheap then have a look on my site, specify what you want and i or one of my team will get back to you, see the "contact us" page. thanks! :) more

Resolved Question: Hacking corporate websites for customer information? illegal?

My roommate just divulged that he used "software to scan for vulnerabilities on web sites." when he found some he took their customer contact info and solicited his business to them. he told me he just "contacted" 200 people from this technique he told me about. I don't really like the guy, he is pompous and arrogant and always brags how much money he makes. Now he has built web sites for people before but he doesn't seem like the hacker type nor does he write code to my knowledge, he is just a sales man of computers and servers. So i dont see it likely he has the ability to do this but this isnt something you really brag about. and his previous brags have been true. My question is, is this illegal and should i let authorities know or the companies he supposedly did this too? more

If you already have a company, it's great and will make the start up yet faster. Next you open bank business and merchant account and Gateway on Authorize.net. Your commission will be 10% from all the sales (you'll earn about $4000-5000 a month). Also all bank and merchant fees will be paid by our company.
