Big business takes the wheel in race against road toll

The leading cause of death among Queenslanders aged 16 to 25 is road crashes, while 14 per cent of young drivers crash within their first year.

These sorts of startling statistics have prompted one Australian company to offer free driving lessons to 500 Queensland students to help lower the road toll.

Education Minister Rod Welford was today scheduled to launch the Leighton Contractors Youth Drive Safe Initiative at Ferny Grove State High School.

The initiative will provide five hours of free driving lessons to senior students at 10 South-East Queensland high schools over the next six months.

At the launch, Mr Welford hailed the program as an ideal way for an Australian company to "give back to the community".

"Anything we can do to better educate and inform our young road users is a step in the right direction and I call on other companies to follow Leighton Contractors' lead and think about how they can give back to their communities," Mr Welford said. more

Do Supermarket BOGOF Deals Encourage Unhealthy Lifestyles?

Beyond BOGOFs, actions to limit marketing's contribution to rising obesity rates is needed, including regulation of junkfood advertising.

BHF's primary concern is children's diets. HFSS food marketing that targets children is too prevalent, and while we must all increase our efforts to deliver positive messages about diet, there is still an onus on the government to stop this bombardment of children.

Andrew Nebel, commercial director, Barnardos

Yes. If restrictions on advertising to children continue to force brands away from presenting quality-based messages, they will understandably default to other elements of the marketing mix, such as pricing.

This will result in consumers being presented with attractive price-based incentives to buy less healthy products, particularly among C2/DE families with children, which the rising cost of living is hitting hardest. more

Earnings: Disney Inches Past Estimates; Cable Networks Business

Disney ( NYSE: DIS) announced quarterly revenue of $9.23 billion, up 2 percent form last year, and edging out analyst estimates of $9.14 billion. Net income was up 7 percent to $1.28 billion. Diluted EPS, excluding an accounting adjustment was $.62, just a shade ahead of $.61 consensus estimates. The results almost look like the opposite of Viacom's ( NYSE: VIA) report from yesterday. Cable Networks revenue was up 12 percent to $2.59 billion, while total media networks revenue was up 8 percent to $4.12 billion. Recall that Viacom basically showed no growth at its cable networks, depending entirely on Rock Band to lift media revenue. Cable Networks op income was up 14 percent to $1.2 billion, which the company attributed to its ESPN franchise and international growth at the Disney Channel.
