Strange named NAWBO 'Woman Business Owner of the Year'

Evelyn Strange has been named the "2008 Woman Business Owner of the Year" by the Louisville chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners.

Strange is co-founder and president of AES Advanced Electrical Systems Inc., a Louisville industrial and commercial electrical contracting and engineering firm. She also serves on several national and local boards, including the executive committees of Greater Louisville Inc., the metro chamber of commerce; and the national NAWBO.

Strange was honored at NAWBO's annual awards luncheon on Friday, March 28, at the Galt House Hotel & Suites.

Other award categories and winners were:

Reserve deputies handling industrial traffic duties

PASCAGOULA -- Chevron Pascagoula Refinery has hired reserve sheriff's deputies for traffic control on Industrial Road while major expansions and other projects take place.

Between four to eight reserve deputies are positioned every weekday morning and evening around shift changes for Chevron and other industries when about 11,000 vehicles travel the road, Sheriff Mike Byrd said.

Chevron spokesman Steve Renfroe said the company is using a parking area near the old county airport for contractors, including those working on the refinery's $500 million expansion of its continuous catalyst regeneration unit.

Because other industries' entrances are located north of Chevron's and closer to U.S. 90, Renfroe said, the company wanted to ensure that traffic around the other plants would not become snarled in lengthy traffic jams. more

Open Question: Great, clean and reputable serviced apartments (or accommodation) in Thailand from $200-$500/month?

I'm looking to travel to Thailand and perhaps stay for a bit (minimum 1 month). I would be able to make about $2000-$3000 online with my job easy, plus have a starting budget of about $10,000 as a safety cushion. Open Question: How to handle this moronic, imbecilic, waste of a waste of a guy?!?

Okay, so here's the deal. And I warn you, it's long winded. I chose Business Studies as one of my electives, and it's always been a very male-orientated class, though I wasn't completely aware of it when I signed up. I am one of six girls, four of which are flunking, two of which are getting damned good grades (I am proud to say I'm up there. Whoo! Sorry, ignore the random burst of Internet pride and victory, haha). Anyway, the teacher is a guy, and it's a class of thirty or something; so there is a lot of guys. One of which includes Harry James Matthews. How do I explain the... the... THING that is Matthews (there's a lot of Harry's in my year, so we call them all by their surnames)? Well, I can try. He has a comb-over; something down here in London, we call a "Comb-Over Kid" or "Pop Kid"; the male plastics. He's easily the most notorious and popular guy in my year. He's smart, but he doesn't try; but he mantains being at the top, kills me as it does to say. He hangs out with the kind of crowd who have serious superiority complexes, and they're all rich with "new money" in the family. He's cocky, seriously so, and his Facebook profile includes "wanking" in the description. He is a horny bastard. He's rude and obnoxious, and full of self-importance. He can get any girl in the year and he uses them for sex, and plays games; he plays on different types of girls' emotions to get them for whatever purpose they serve to him; whether it's mild entertainment in front of his friends, or a blowjob (I apologize for my crudeness). He's a flirt, in every way possible and a show-off. He always wants and needs to be the centre of attention and he hasn't had a girl NOT interested in him, as far as I am aware, for a very long time, if ever. I never really had much to do with him. Sure, he was in my Business class, which I started in September. I saw him, and McKenna (Harry. Nice, good looking, kind heart... Dumb as a rock, unfortunately) and Rosie, a close, plastic friend of theirs (who is somewhat nice to me in order to copy my work - which doesn't happen anyway - and has somehow remained to stay her original skin colour, as opposed to orange), and I just thought "Oh, okay, Harry Matthews is in this class. Figures." You don't have to KNOW Matthews to know OF him. You would have had to been living under a rock for the past century if you're at WHS and don't know who he is. So, anyway, I never really spoke to him. Once, I just bumped into him on the way out, and I started apologizing like crazy (he's a guy... He reacted differently to the same things all the time... We were right up against each other... I got flustered...), and he just smiled down at me, dazzlingly, and told me of course it was fine and watched me as I scooted out of the room as quickly as humanly possible. I thought he had an amazing smile and wasn't as much trouble as everyone said. I was wrong. We had to work together for a Business project. I kind of saw it coming and was making eyes at my teacher not to do it, but he pretended not to see. As soon as the words "Harry, work with Hannah" were uttered, I knew I was doomed. I actually buried my face in my hands and just muttered "Noo..."; by then, I'd had more exposure to him, just by occasionally spotting him being an asswipe in class. Example; teacher asks why he's been off. Harry says he's broken his nose. Then he starts worrying and asking if it shows and whether or not it looks bad. I kid you not. Dazzling smile or not, he was so not worth my time after that happened. Anyway, after finding out who I am, he walks over and the first thing he says to me? "Hey Hannah, baby, I'm with you ;)". Then; commence the flirting. The guy tried every fricking thing under the planet. Making me look into his eyes, asking me what I thought about him, being charming, being smutty, the works. If he hadn't kept changing tactics to see what'd he need to "use" for me so quickly, I might have fallen for the false charm when he finally got there. When he finally realized I wasn't falling for it, he relaxed a little and just started watching me. I called him vain and gave the example from above; he got heated for a moment, then just smiled and slumped back in his seat; he'd been bugging me all lesson, so I guess I looked triumphant at antagonizing him back. So, at the end, I just asked him if he did that (flirting) to every girl, to which he awkwardly replied; "No - yes -" (gets back his mojo) "- Only the special ones ;D". When I walked out of that lesson, Rosie tried to hold his hand; he saw me, shrugged her off and said things like "You wouldn't do that to me, would you, Hannah babe?" and started opening doors for me and stuff. Finally, when he was walking off with a friend and me in another direction, he just yelled for EVERYONE to hear "You're good conversation, Hannah!" Ohh man, living conditions are not that good as someone may think. Even having a college degree won't really help U find a decent job. Country has got so corrupted, especially in a last few years... If U don't know "somebody, who knows somebody..." and if your dad or uncle or e.t.c. is not a rich businessman, U absolutely have no chances to find a good job! Overwise you'll be working for a couple hundred bucks a month just wasting time. And living expenses are the same or even more compared to US. Only cigarettes & utilities are cheaper. Wages are higher in Moscow & St.Petersburg (for legal residents only), but living is more expensive there too; plus U need "hard to get" registration papers to live and work there. U wanna know why would someone want to leave and come to the USA? Main reasons are Freedom and $$$ !!! Democracy here is fake (believe me), country has a political regime like North Korea or China or Iran. No freedom of speech, human rights violations, coloured people and minorities get discriminated, no justice, no free elections, citizens are forced to vote for a major party... Youngbucks are trying to copy western lifestyle, but russia has its own unique culture. Almost all media, internet and TV is censored by government and FSB (ex KGB). Propaganda on every news channel. I have been living in US for 6 years and had to come back home 2 years ago. All I said above is what I see now. I was a russian patriot when I was overseas, but I started loosing it after comeback. The British government has proposed a bill that will allow internet connections to be slowed, or even temporarily cut, if illegal downloads have been performed using that connection. Voting Question: where to get new computer parts directly from computer manufactures price.?

Hi, I would like to know how to buy computer parts directly from manufactures and get the cheapest price possible by directly dealing with the manufactures. I own a business and would like to start building computers for clients at some point. I already contacted microsun for server motherboard and the manufacture directed me to a whole seller that gave me a price more expensive then what I can find on the internet. they gave me a price of 550. I found prices for the same exact motherboard online for 325 bucks. the price ranged I found was from 325 to 525 bucks. I showed them the better price so when I showed them the 525 they said they can give it to me at 525. Then told them I found another lower price at 480. They then said ok we can give you it for 480. I then stopped cuz I felt as if they don't plan to sell the board for a cheap price. I wanted to buy the board as cheap as the retailers or whole sellers or distributors got the boards for. Any ideas how to go about doing this?I know that wholesellers sell you in bulk and you need to establish your credit. I seen some ask that you need to spend 10,000 bucks first before you get discounts. I just don't see how a small business can buy the stuff at high prices and then try selling them if there is already other retailers out there with lower selling prices then yours. I was told that if you contact the manufacture you can directly buy the products usually 50% to 70% off from retail prices.Thats only if your a business and dealing directly with the manufacture otherwise you pay more money with distributor or whole seller or a reseller. I want to build custom computers for clients. Just don't know how to get good deals on parts lower then retail prices. I hear it's cheaper if you buy it directly from china. more

Voting Question: Barclays have taken my account balance to nil and made me Zero?

I hold a business account running for the last 6 months fine no problems in it. Yesterday suddenly when i checked my balance the account the balance is zero, £64000 is taken from the account. and the trasaction mention Referral Manchester Premeir mentioning, I called to the bank call centre and ask where is my money gone they said it is showing that a transcation is made to a Football donation or so, i said i never done this, stop this transaction for a long hold they said they are putting the transactiion in dispute, further i called and asked how the payment was made ? i asked was it internet or my card? or what, imagine they said none of it, and the transaction is mentioning Debit. Fine later in the evening at 4 they said to me that the funds are taken by the barclays. I said we are having a legit business just started in 6 months , never had a problem and when we are increasing our turnover and business u have taken the money, i said i am still not satisfied whats going on, i need to go to the police to report it and report to my solicitor, they said there is no need beause ur money is safe with the bank and is with us but we can't give u the reason at the moment that why this thing had happened. my concern is, u know if the banks shuts the bank account they just simply send the letter of closing the accont, but this wasn't the case, and if money laundrying is done they close and seize the account as well. but in these both cases, i can access the account check my statement, payments all active, but the money is missing, in sense of whole account is wipe off. Hi All My wife is in a position to refer business to another company, who have agreed to pay her commission for every referral. The income she anticipates to generate each year will be ranging from 5k to 10k per annum. My questions are as follows: (1) Due to the limited income, should she set up a ltd company or just become a sole trader, or anything else you can recommend? (2) Someone told us that it would be best to set up a ltd company, and then get income as dividends. Whilst this may be answered in question 1 above, would this be a good option? (3) My wife would be working part time from home, which we are paying a mortgage. Can we claim anything as rent? I've read that we can claim £3 per week? (4) In order to start the business, she'll need to buy a work computer, printer, have internet access, make some work calls to generate leads, buy stationary, postage costs, etc. What can we claim? I appreciate that the answers might be different depending on which route she is best to go down. Can she just claim back the VAT when she does her tax at the end of the financial year or can we claim the whole costs as expenses? If you can claim the VAT back, do you need to be VAT registered? I heard that the area i am at does not have a roller rink, this means in-line skaters don't have a place to skate. ok - back in October I met a guy on an online dating website. About 3 weeks after we started talking, he had to go to the U.K. on business. As soon as he got home from there, we were finally going to meet. However, circumstances arose, and he had to go to Nigeria to be with his mom who was facing a major surgery. He called me up and was very upset. Long story short, I loaned him $1500 to help with his moms surgery. One thing lead to the next, and teh next thing you know he said that if I could loan him enough money to come home that he would pay me back everything he owes me. So , then nice and trusting person I try to be, I sent him $3500 for a plane ticket to come home. I asked him if he got his plane ticket, and he said he couldn't get it because he had to pay his cell phone bill and his internet bill before they would let him leave the country - and his bills were totalling more than i sent him. I know this guy who got a contract installing cable, phone, and internet as a contractor. He is going to start with 5 techs, the company will make 20%/tech on however much they invoice. A Tech avgs $1400/week x 5 techs = $7000/wk. The company will clear $1400, I will receive 15% of this ($280/week). Hi, One week before Christmas, when I tried to start my vehicle's engine it made a terrible noise, this happened on a friday. I contacted a nearby repair shop, the mechanic came an towed my van to his shop. The following week, the mechanic phoned me and told me my engine was blown. I could either replace the engine or junk the van. The mechanic stated that because of the condition (blown engine) of the vehicle he would not charge me for looking at it or towing. I told him Thank you. He then advised I junk the van. I ask for time to decide on what I wanted to do. The mechanic said sure take your time in deciding I understand. After debating over the weekend I decided to phone the mechanic, telling him I couldn't make a decision without him giving me Prices of what a replaced engine would be. He stated he would check around for prices and get back to me. After the Holidays.. he quoted me a price of $1500! He said take your time decide and get back to me on what you want to do. I then made numerous phone calls and searched the internet for an engine.The following Wednesday it was brought to our attention we were about to have a huge snowstorm. I receive a FRANTIC phone message from the mechanic telling me I NEED TO DECIDE NOW ..WE HAVE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE! AND if I want he will buy the vehicle from me at JUNK price or he also has a BUYER ..either way he needs the vehicle's title! NOW! At this point I looked for my title only to realize I had misplaced it. I then left a phone message telling the mechanic I can not find my title. I will have to apply for a new one. We then had two snowstorms back to back 32+ inches every business was shut down. Plus another and another snowstorm. I also had a two family crisis (Death's) I could not get anywhere to get a new title. Last monday I applied for a new title and finally received it this past Saturday. At this time I also noticed an ad in our local paper stating they were buying junk vehicles. I phoned them and asked what they paid. I then contacted the mechanic and stated that he never quoted me an actual cash amount (he told me he would pay me Junk price). I asked him what that amount would be. I told him I do have another buyer. TODAY I received a phone call from the mechanic telling me He feels we should be square, he should owe me nothing. I should just GIVE him the van because he never charged me for towing or diagnosis of the van's problem. He also added he done some checking around and he could charge me $10 a day for storage. (THE VAN WAS PARKED IN A PUBLIC ALLEY!) My question is must I pay for Storage? Storage costs were never mentioned until today. Not to mentioned the car was parked in a PUBLIC ALLEY!
