Intra-day transactions in shares

My brother-in-law is doing business. Now he has started doing intra-day buying and selling of shares through a stock broker by on-line trading. At present, he is paying 10 per cent as tax on his short-term capital gai

ns. Is it correct? What is the correct position as regards investment on share by people other than share brokers? Kindly clarify.

The reader is correct in his suspicion that his brother-in-law is mistaken in paying tax by treating the income from intra-day transactions as short-term capital gains.

In fact, frequency of transactions vests the transactions with the character of trade and not investments.

Investments are those, which are acquired with the intent to hold on to them for earning income therefrom by way of rent, interest or dividend. more

Our Belize Community – Juan Alamilla

With development comes many new opportunities for work. Tourism is the key source of income but developers need much more than just tourists. Hotel rooms, homes and businesses need plumbing and electrical work. This too is a valuable necessity in our island; someone who can safely and properly install these amenities to your abode is key. This week, we feature an individual who works arduously in his business but also understands that the island has other needs. He has dedicated himself to assisting the community and has many future plans for development within our town. We introduce Deputy Mayor for San Pedro Town Juan Jose Alamilla.

Juan was born in the picturesque village of San Pedro on January 22nd, 1965. Born to parents Juan and Angela Alamilla, he enjoyed the peacefulness of the community along with his four sisters and three brothers. more

Nyu International Business Questions asked

Resolved Question: Are Richmond, The American International University in London & The American University in Paris good schools?

I am currently a high school senior making preparations to go off to college in the coming fall. I have applied to a number of school in the U.S, but also in different countries. Most recently, I was accepted to Richmond, The American International University in London and The American International University of Paris. However, as I have done my research on these schools I have found it difficult to find information on the schools academic reputation. I know that they are fully accredited in both the United States and their countries of origin, but I don't know if they are any good in comparison to schools like New York University and Boston University, two other schools that I have applied to and also been accepted to. So my question is, academically speaking, are Richmond, The American International University in London and The American University of Paris good respected schools that are worth my time in comparison to traditional U.S. University's like NYU and BU? Just to help answer the question, I am planning on studying Business Administration and Journalism. Also, I am not so worried about the cost of the schools at this time, more so the academic value of the schools. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Chances of getting into USC, Stanford, UCLA, Columbia...?

So, I did this a while ago but didn't get any responses; here I go again! I really would appreciate some feedback this time! I am currently a junior in a Sacramento Area public high school. High school is okay, average. *Freshman: 4.0 GPA (No AP's offered - Took all CP classes) CP English, Student Govt, Spanish 1, Biology, Geography, Geometry, Health/Safety. *Sophomore: 4.2 GPA (Took the 1 AP class offered, 1 Honors, and all CP's) AP European History, Honors English, CP Chemistry, Student Govt, Spanish 2, Spanish 3, Algebra 2. *Junior: so far 4.33 GPA: Spanish 4, Anatomy/Physiology, Student Govt, AP Art History, AP Lang and Comp, Honors Pre-Calc, US History and Sociology at Community College. *Senior: probably about a 4.5 GPA; Expected Schedule: AP Spanish, AP Human Geography, AP Govt/Econ, AP Literature, AP Psychology, Student Govt, AP Stats, and 2 more Community College Classes *Top 5% of class *15/515 Class Rank (expected to rise to top 5 or 10) *ASB Vice President of my school (ASB President next year??) *Intern in California State Senate *Capitol Hill/D.C. Congressional Page *Varsity Track and Field athlete *Speech and Debate Champion *Youth Commissioner in my city's government which handles over $700,000 that is dispersed to local non-profit organizations *Started my school's Junior State of America chapter this year, where I am President *CSF member *20+ hours of community service with a local Children's hospital *20+ hours at Elementary schools with Special Education Students *20+ hours at local Retirement Home *Extensive work with Make-A-Wish Foundation *20+ hours at local Rehabilitation facility *20+ hours with local campaigns, and a bit of time with other various organizations. *EXCELLENT personal letters of recomendation PSAT last year as a sophomore: around 170 (but very high in reading/comprehension), with literally no preparation. I took a sample one with kaplan that was very accurate with last year's PSAT results and recieved a 198; just took the real one last month and pretty sure I got over 200. I am extremely passionate about politics, so I would like to study Political Science and minor in International Relations/Business. Possibly minor in Spanish. So far, in order of preference, my lists are: Reaches, partially realistic: 1. Stanford 2. Harvard 3. Princeton 4. Yale Realistic: 1. USC 2. UCLA 3. UCB 4. NYU 5. Columbia 6. Georgetown 7. Pepperdine Do I have a chance at any of these schools? Am I on track? Is there anything specific I can do to set myself apart from other applicants? Any other suggestions? *And I know it may help that I live in California for the UC's, and I know they say it doesn't matter but for what it's worth I am 1/2 Mexican, 1/4 Armenian, and 1/4 Yogoslavian. ALSO... hypothetical situation: I got into USC and Stanford. Both cost the same. I LOVE LA, not so much the Bay Area. I want to pursue an acting career also, so obviously the best place for that is LA. I feel like I will enjoy going to USC more but then again I don't know much about student life at Stanford. Is it worth it the bite the bullet and go for the prestige and so-called better education, or should I go to USC and pursue my other interests? more

Resolved Question: MS in Marketing (ex. Northwestern IMC, NYU Integrated Marketing)?

Hi, As an international student interested in marketing (mainly Brand Management) but who has no work experience, I was hoping to go for a masters in marketing before getting a MBA later in my life. The only TOP schools (the ones with reputable MBAs-at least top 25) with a MS in marketing I found were NorthWestern's IMC and NYU's Integrated Marketing program... Does anyone know any other MS in marketing programs from a top ranked school? In addition, I would like to know about the reputation of the two programs I mentioned above. I heard NW's IMC is a respected program in the marketing industry but compared to top MBAs (w/marketing concentration) I wonder how much it fares...As for NYU's program, I have not heard any feedbacks at all (both positive or negative) and I wonder if it is known in the business industry at all. *As a side note, the only MBA I might get right now is Cornell's accerelated MBA. I'm graduating from Cornell's undergraduate business program and they have a special option of going straight to Johnson but I was hoping to go to a much higher ranked MBA in the future instead of attending Johnson which is not that famous for marketing anyways... Hope I could receive a lot of informations from you all! Thx! more

Resolved Question: What College should I go to my top three choices are University of Chicago, Dartmouth, & New York University?

I've been accepted to all three and money is not an issue. I don't know exactly what I want to study but it will most likely be International Business or archeology. All three schools have their advantages. NYU has one of the top then business schools, Chicago Univ. is ranked one of the top Colleges in the U.S as well as Dartmouth. I'm having a hard time deciding so I'm hoping someone would help. more

Resolved Question: What do you think are my chances of getting into NYU?

Well, i'm from Northern Virginia. At the end of my sophomore year, I have a 3.78 GPA and are signed up for 2 AP Classes + Marketing Co Op interning next year and my grades will be a lot of better, so I'm guessing by the end of my junior year it will be a 3.85. I got a 1750 on my SAT, I can always retake it though because of my age. I was in the NHS,National Italian Honor Society,Environment Club,International Club,Model UN,DECA, and National English Honor Society. I work four days a week at a job I've had for 2 years and will work at until I graduate. I played Varsity Soccer as a freshman and JV Field Hockey as a freshman. No one in my family has ever attended college besides community college. Also, if it helps my father is disabled from an accident and has very little brain function-I've been on social security for this since age 5. (If this helps for any specific scholarship ive heard idk).I want to major in International Business. How do my chances look, and if they don't look good is there any advice for me to increase my chances? If this isn't realistic, is there any school like it that is? Thank you! more

Resolved Question: can someone summarize this article for me like now?

NEW YORK – TO BE RELEVANT, ART must respond to the choices, changes and challenges of these fluid, turbulent times and help create the conditions necessary to transform society and deal with consequences, where the burning issues of the day become the overriding factor in the pursuit of a meaningful popular culture. All artists are active participants in these current cross cultural dynamics and cannot afford to be left out in the cold or live the solitary, isolated existence under the pretentious mask of artistic indifference. To be catalysts for change, artists need to constantly question their own motives, unfair policies affecting creative freedom and one's role in a society; to continuously evolve and not waste valuable time worrying about their reputation after they’re dead. Much as we respect the choices most artists make for themselves, there’s an underlying need for them to document their own times - the sweeping political changes happening around us; to grapple with the issues as they come and try to create art that amplify and project opportunities for change to a larger audience. The enormous impact of Western popular culture on diverse communities worldwide has reached a point where we cannot afford to allow a handful of privileged few to define its form and content without the active participation of socially committed members of the international Arts community. It’s sad to note that the onslaught of American popular culture has marginalized, if not totally wiped out, indigenous cultures in many parts of the world. Poor, underdeveloped countries with rich cultural heritage have been 'touched' by the magic wand of Hollywood and are fighting back its negative impact on their traditional way of life. Cultural amnesia- the loss of traditional values, oral history and indigenous art forms, have now become more prevalent than in the past as more and more ethnic communities are quick to adapt what they see on the screen as 'progress' and accept it to be far better than what they have had for centuries. I hope the scheduled conference on social theory, on politics and the arts would address these concerns to be able to institute necessary changes to safeguard the integrity of indigenous communities. The upcoming 33rd Conference on Social Theory, Politics and the Arts is a continuing dialogue by participants drawn not only from artists in the visual, performing, written and multi media arts but also from a broad range of disciplines that include sociology, political science, management, economics, law, urban planning and policy studies. Hosted by The New York foundation for the Arts, The Arts Council of Manhattan, the NYU Roberts Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and the Research Center for Leadership in Action, this year's conference aims "to explore new trends, practices and public policy issues affecting and shaping the arts around the world." Last March, I had the privilege of taking part in an art exhibition at a Chelsea gallery in NYC and was glad to see quite a number of artworks that explored the political realities of American life, skillfully calculated to question and disturb viewers from their private complacency. There is no question that the New York art scene has been regarded as the crystal ball of new things to come; unfortunately, the current crop of art pieces had nothing much to say and even failed miserably to amuse. Despite living in the shadows of 9/11, political art in NYC is still groping in the dark ages, seemingly destined to be graffiti outside gallery walls. Quite a number of NY-based artists I’ve met, whose works revolve around the current political debates, lament that most art galleries won't dare touch 'political art' with the proverbial ten feet pole. Art galleries are primarily business driven and understandably more concerned with their return of investments. Unfortunately some even expound that myth that artists should stay away and be apolitical, to paint only decorative, 'saleable' pieces that would go well in upscale condo units. What gets hanged or not hanged in galleries have a great impact on popular culture and most galleries would cringe at anything resembling 'breaking news' from war zones. But for most artists to continue doing what they’re good at, they have to live on their art. But since the market for political art, if one has to survive on it, is not much, this could initially discourage some artists from investing much of their creative time on it. Hopefully gallery owners would realize that political art has its niche in our lives. In contrast is the swelling tide of books on current political debates. I can't help but envy those writers and publishing houses that dare focus their efforts and resources to bring about the truth regardless of consequences. Whistleblowers, anti-war groups, civil disobedience advocates and environmental activist are all having a field day. These writers have successfully rammed their political views more

Voting Question: What can I do with a international business and trade certificate? Will it look or help in jobs? Thanks!?

I am currently taking my Spring semester off of college and taking some time to decide what I want to be doing. I found out about international trade and business major a few days ago and became very interested in this field as I want to open up my own business one day. I was looking at NYU University and they are offering this upon completion of about 8 classes of about 700-800 per class. I am just wondering is this worth it ? I plan on getting a bachelor as well but added with this how greatly will it look to employers? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Which university best suits me, and do I have a chance to get in?

I am currently a sophomore in high school. I am enrolled in AP and Honors classes and I have a 4.25 GPA. I am also active in Student Government, and will hopefully become Class President next year. I also run Track and Field and I am active in my school's Speech and Debate club. I just took the PSAT, and I scored around 170 (but very high in reading/comprehension). I am very interested in politics, so I would like to study Political Science. I also plan to become fluent in Spanish, as I am in Spanish 4 as of now. And, I am interested in International Business/Marketing. So far, I have looked into UCLA, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, NYU, Georgetown, Columbia, and the American University. Do I have a chance at any of these schools? Am I on track? Is there anything specific I can do to set myself apart from other applicants? Any other suggestions? more

Resolved Question: What do you know about these colleges? ?

Reed, Columbia, NYU, Harvard, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, UPenn. Those are the ones I'm looking at right now. I'm a sophomore in high school, and my GPA is 5.0, I think. I took the ACT three years ago, and my composite score was 30. I'm playing tennis this year and probably will continue to do so for the rest of high school. I'm not especially good though. The extent of my service activities comes from clubs like Interact, Mu Alpha Theta, and National Spanish Honors Society. I think I want to do something with writing or international business, but that can change. I really don't think I'll do medicine, though. I know it's early, and I'm probably coming off as an arrogant little snot, but I'd love to hear your opinions on these colleges, especially if you've applied to them or you attend them or have attended them. Any other advice about anything would be adored and cherished and loved and cared for, I promise. =) Thank you!About the GPA: My school gives 4 points for an A for regular courses, 5 points for honors courses, and 6 points for AP/IB classes. Does that explain it? And no, I am not a troll. more

Resolved Question: My University dropped my major, What do I do?

What happened was my uni originally did not have the major I wanted, so i settled for an International Business Major. I hate my major, I cannot take it anymore so I went to change my major to French, over the summer, both French and German majors were dropped. At this point, I am unsure what to do anymore. This is still only my first semester. I am considering a major in Middle Eastern Studies (currently it is my minor) or International Relations. I honestly do not know what I want to major in, but I know if I transfer, the school will want to know immediately. I am considering: AUC in Cairo, Egypt NYU Barnard Columbia The New School and Marymount Manhattan (everything except for AUC is in New York) I have close family friends in New York, nothing in Egypt. Although AUC is the same price as my current Uni, the rest are significantly higher. Please help meI go to a Local Uni about 2 hours north from where I live. My school is about the same as CC + room and board. and right now, all my tuition fees room board and books are paid by grants (and then some ;-) ) more

Resolved Question: Best college for art history/business?

I want to double major in art history and business, most likely international, but im not sure yet. What would be the best college for these two majors? * I am interested in schools like NYU, USC, UCLA or others along that line. Ivy-league is a reach but not out of the question. more

Resolved Question: To get into Harvard Business School?

I know someone who owns his own business. His business is a huge success in the US and he's going international with it this January. He went to Polytech University in NY which is now considered NYU actually. He was a business major and had a 3.7 GPA. In Business school you're taught how to start a business what to do. But he already knows all that, he just wants to get an MBA from Harvard, a business degree. He wants to get his MBA in business in Harvard business school. Are his chances of getting into Harvard business school greater than someone that doesn't own their own business? If you own a business does it mean you're an almost automatic shoe-in to an ivy league business school? more

Resolved Question: I have 2.5 years of university done and an Associate's, madness to drop out?

I'm a junior at NYU, and because of the program I did, I have an Associate's degree in "Liberal Arts". What Bachelor's does that mean I'm aiming for? The easiest and most unimaginative subject out there: History. I've chosen this because conveniently, I already have credits for it. I suppose it's also due to my very remote preference for history over science related courses. I sound enthused, don't I? In my reasoning, university is a privilege that's meant to be appreciated. Not only must you be motivated to do well, but you should have a desire to learn. The thing with me is, I didn't know what to do for my major so I chose the easiest option. I'm a people person more than anything else, and if I could redo it all over, I would have applied to business school instead. But the fact of the matter is, I've already invested $100,000 for my first two years at NYU, and was luckier than most people in my situation because I have an Associate's. I can't go back. I've read on another Answer on this site that this degree is--for all intents and purposes--useless. But couldn't the same be said of a History major? No matter whether I finish uni or not, I'm initially going to end up as a receptionist or admin assistant or some other customer service related field. I already have a very strong background in customer service, and I've never been to an interview for a job I didn't get. I may only be 20, but I was once paid $20 an hour and asked to stay on permanently. What I'm getting at is this: I have an Associate's from one of the best universities in the country, and a great personality and resume. I'm an international traveler who reads, writes, and speaks English and French perfectly (I'm a dual-citizen, American and Canadian from Quebec). So why do I need to spend $100,000 more to buy a piece of paper in a field that isn't respected in the first place? I have barely enough of my own money to finish through my senior year. My mother is on the verge of declaring bankruptcy. I actually really dislike school in general (though I've met some fabulous people and do have a 3.46 GPA). And I'm very much against the idea that I'm still in school because socially, I need to be. I'm seriously considering dropping out at the end of this semester. Do you think this would be an incorrigible mistake? Would my life REALLY be that different for not having a Bachelor's? I know that in today's credit crunchy world, it's important to have every advantage, but is my disinterested study of History really going to make a difference? Any light you can shed on the matter would be very helpful. It's hard to get unbiased advice from friends and family. Feel free to email your own stories, I'd love to hear about them!  more

Voting Question: What career possibilities do I have with an MBA/pHD in International Business?

Hi everybody! I am 15 years old and I am in my 4th year out of 5 years in high school (I'm in Ireland) I hope to study a BSC in International Business with Japanese in University, I will follow this with an MBA immediately and then I hope to attend either NYU or Berkeley to attain a pHD. While I have quite a good idea, I was wondering what job options would be open to me immediately after I attain my MBA? E.g. what part of a company can I get my job in? Thanks for answers... BTW, I will probably major in Marketing and also, in the above jobs, what would starting salary and possible promotions be? Thanks again, Conor more

Resolved Question: Will I be guaranteed my first choice major in college?

I am a senior in high school and I am applying to the University of South Carolina because they are ranked number one in international business. I am very sure that that's what I want to major in. I read that they have a limit of 50 students for the international business major. Does this mean that if I do get accepted and choose to go there I might not have the chance to do what I wanted? When will I be able to find out if I won't be able to major in international business, if that is the case? Also, I am also considering Temple U, UPenn, NYU, Northeastern and UTexas at Austin. I would appreciate any information regarding the international business programs there. more

Resolved Question: What are my chances at the following colleges? BC, W&M, Harvard, Penn, UVa, Gettysburg, Emory, NYU & Fordham.?

I'm currently a junior at a public (suburban) high school, am in the top 5% of my class, have a 4.0 GPA, am the Vice-president of the student council (I was historian last year), clarinet section leader & quartermaster of the marching band (in line to be Drum Major nxt year), am involved in Junior state of America club, International Relations Club, Tri-M music honor society (going for historian this year), Full Orchestra, National Honor Society (going for president at the end of the year), and I was in poetry club my freshman year, but it was cancelled after that. I plan on joining Key Club (community service based), and playing in the school musical this year as well. I currently have 35 hours of community service, and will undoubtly triple that this year in student council activities alone. As for classes, I was in honors science algebra and history my freshman year (H2 (average) french (III) english and band), honors history biology and english in sophomore year (H2 algebra II, french (IV), and band). This year I am taking AP US History, honors chemistry and english (H2 French V and pre-calculus). I have two required classes, Business Law ans Nutrition, and one elective, Sociology. Next year I plan to take AP American Government and Politics, AP English (I don't know which one they give us here, they don't tell us), AP World History, AP European History, Honors Band and America in the 60's, however if it doesn't work out something might be dropped to take French VI Honors. As for SAT's I am currently taking a class with the Princeton Review and am aiming for a 2200, but at the moment am capable of 1910. I will also be taking SAT subject tests in Literature, World History and US History. My teacher reccomendations will come from my two band directors who have known me since 5th grade, my 9th grade history teacher, who advises the Student Council, and my 10th, 11th and (possibly) 12th grade history teacher, who received his PhD at William and Mary and has connections at UVa. more

Resolved Question: What are my chances of getting into a Top 50 undergrad business school with my Associates Degree?

I've changed my major 6 times and went from a 4-yr school to a 2-yr community college. Had nothing to do with academics I just didn't like the 1st school & had a hard time picking a major, problem is I'm the type of person who is interested in too many things and always changing my mind. So anyways now I've decided I want to go to a business school for International Management. I have a 3.85 GPA in my business transfer program at the 2-yr school, also in the Honors program & in Phi Theta Kappa which is junior college honor society.I'm also a minority so I think that might help me a bit w/ schools wanting to have a diverse student body. So I want to know what are my chances of getting into a Top 50 undergrad B-school? Coming from a community college I doubt Upenn is even an option for me, they would laugh when they see the application. My top choices are Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern U, Bentley College, Uconn, NYU, Boston College,Emory U. Do I have a chance?! more
