Rocky posts profitable 2Q Business First of Columbus

Rocky Brands Inc. rebounded from a money-losing second quarter last year with top- and bottom-line gains this year, the company told investors as the markets closed Thursday.

Nelsonville-based Rocky (NASDAQ:RCKY) reported a second-quarter profit of $732,842, or 13 cents a share, versus a loss of $1.39 million, or 25 cents a share, a year ago. Last year's second quarter had been hit with an $800,000 charge for paying off loans early along with an increase in production and closeout costs.

Second-quarter revenue grew 3 percent to $60.5 million from $58.8 million in last year's second quarter.

The profitable second quarter brings first-half earnings to $1.03 million, or 19 cents a share, versus a loss of $621,302, or 11 cents a share, in the first six months of 2007. more

A month after the price hike, a random survey with businesses already showed drastic reduction in activities; signs abound that Malaysia could slide into a major economic contraction because of uncertainty and erosion of confidence.

The government of the day still does not seem to "get it", that it is important to direct and target policy measures to arrest the contraction before the system is beyond resuscitation.

In raising the price of fuel; so far the concern has been focused on the inflationary impact on the people. Given, this concern is legitimate, and the people's interest should come first. However, it is more important to focus on protecting the income of the people. The talk of inflation is meaningless if there isn't even any income to begin with!

To avert the crisis, the most important measure in front of us is to sustain the local business sector, protect their margins so they will not retrench their workforce, making hundreds of thousands or even millions of people unemployed. more

I want to know your opinions and suggestions on moving to live in Greece. I know that currently there is a financial crisis and things are not looking too great in Greece, in terms of unemployment and interest rates etc. However, my partner and I have been planning to move to live in Greece for a while. Open Question: Is a masters better than a bachelors?

I have done a Bachelor of Arts in Languages. Now that im finished I feel super under-qualified, and wanted to add something that would make me more employable. I had initially thought id just do a Bachelor of Commerce even though its not so interesting- just because this is where the jobs are at. I graduated from college about a year ago now (Spring 2009), and I haven't had any luck landing jobs. I had a BA in communications with a minor in international business. I had a good GPA, did two internships, studied abroad, and held a variety of leadership roles for my university. Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck landing a professional entry level job. I've been accepted into a few graduate schools concentrating in mass communication and international relations. I definately want to pursue graduate school, and I think a master's degree will open up some more opportunities. However I don't want to waste 2 more years, and take out more loans to be in the same boat, but I just don't see any other options. Should I go for it and take out the loans to do it?? more

Resolved Question: What job should I do?

Since graduating in 2005 I have spent time travelling and working in various jobs (please see my CV attached). I have a lot of ideas about things I want to do and achieve, but have been reluctant to follow a particular path fully for fear of closing off others. As a result I haven't progressed in jobs, rather remained static and moved around different organisations on a similar level. I'm not 'career driven' in the typical sense, so career progression for me is less about working my way into a senior position, and more about realising my potential, experiencing new things, learning and contributing to society. The following things are important to me in a job: Variety - this is really important. I don't want to remain static in a job, and I really dislike routine. I like experiencing new things; achieving something and then moving onto the next. This is the main reason that I've not fulfilled my ambitions since graduation, even though I've had options to progress higher in almost every job I've had. I feel like committing to a path will cut off others. And geographical variety is important too, not just variety of the work I'm doing. I don't like being sat in front of a computer all day doing repetitive tasks. I really enjoy travel, seeing new places, learning about different cultures, meeting new people. Working abroad or being in a job that involves international travel would be good. Altruism - I don't see a job as a means to money alone. I need money to live (obviously) and I do want to be more than comfortable financially, but I want to feel like I've achieved something positive with my day - not just making money for people. I enjoy working with people and helping individuals, but I’m not sure if that type of career (e.g. social work) would meet my needs. I imagine that, again, I’d feel tied down to one path, to a specific ‘career’. I feel like I may be happier achieving things on a bigger scale, that help lots of people. Public sector or charity work appeals to me more than the private sector for this reason. However, I get very frustrated by bureaucracy and I'm attracted by the freedom and potential to achieve that the private sector offers. Creativity – I feel like a creative job would stimulate me far more than the opposite (though I am quite an analytical person). I like writing, and I have a lot of ideas. People – Ironically the jobs that I’ve enjoyed most have been the worst match to my ambitions. E.g. a call centre in Australia and admin work at Greene King. This is because the people I’ve worked with quickly became friends, and the working environment was very social. Here are some of the jobs/career paths I’m considering: Journalism – magazine journalism, BBC etc International development/politics – working for an MP, civil service Charity work (e.g. lobbyist, researching) – Oxfam, Amnesty International etc Post graduate study (e.g. MA in Politics) Research (e.g. doctorate) Teaching English as a foreign language International work (e.g. UN, disaster recovery) Volunteering overseas (e.g. VSO – teaching, community development projects) Writer (books, plays, poetry etc), travel writer, columnist Business analysis (my degree was in Information Systems. I don’t really enjoy this type of work and so haven’t pursued it) Working with young or disadvantaged children (e.g. duke of Edinburgh style outdoor trips) Starting a business There are aspects of most of these professions that appeal to me, and some of them I definitely want to achieve at some point (i.e. starting a business, writing, studying a masters, volunteering abroad). However, there’s not really one career path that stands out above the rest, and I’m not sure what the best direction to go in is at this point in my career. Can you recommend any career paths/jobs that would suit my aspirations? Do you have any advice about how to resolve my fears about not pursuing potentially interesting paths? Can you advise me on the most logical/best career move at this stage, which would allow me to gain a wide breadth of experience and then to specialise or move into different areas in the future? I think it’s important that I don’t waste time in jobs that don’t contribute anything to my goals/CV: is there a logical job type that would allow me to build up useful experience while I’m working out what to do longer-term, and that might help me decide this? Perhaps TEFL? more

Hello , I am about to get into grad school , the thing is that i am not sure with which major it'd be easier to find jobs after graduating. I am an international student and i am looking to work in the US and later moving back to Europe. Voting Question: Expensive dream school or affordable state school?

My dream school has been DePaul University in Chicago all through high school. I've been accepted and everything is great BUT the only problem is the overall cost: around $40,000. I've also been accepted into Illinois State University which is basically half the price of DePaul. And I'm in the running for a $20,000 scholarship to ISU. If I choose to go to DePaul, I will have to get a student loan. My parents keep encouraging me to go to ISU because all my siblings came out of college without debt plus they think something terrible will happen to me if I go to school in Chicago. But I know where I want to be and it's not at ISU. And, something terrible could happen at ISU too. My major is still up in the air between international business, a foreign language, public relations, or achieving a masters in criminal psychology. Would going into debt be worth it?Thank you all! College decisions are very stressful. And no, I don't trust a bunch of people on the internet to make this decision. But any sort of feedback on this is useful :) more

I'm a mom to 2 babies, and I graduated from an international medical school. However, I was looking for career change as i grew dissatisfied with practicing medicine, and wanted to work more on a societal level and make more impact to improve both the educational and healthcare systems, something i couldn't do by only practicing medicine. However, i want to attend a reputable university to be able to work with top firms, and i got nothing to show except my medical degree, to be able to gain admission at such schools. I live in North Carolina, and i thought doing a masters in liberal studies first would give me a good head start. It's fairly easy to get into, and good for me explore different fields and discover what i really want to do. It's also good on class times, which will be during evenings. That way i could still take care of my kids, and by the time i finish the degree, they'll be older, so i could go ahead and apply for the more rigorous degrees of law and business or government and business. What would be a better, worthy degree to pursue and would help me get in those top programs? Harvard Extension School or Duke Graduate School, both in liberal studies? I would love it if someone with experience advises me. Please help! more

I used to be an international student in the States and got a bachelor's in finance. It took me quite a long time and I had to go back in between because it was very expensive. When I was done I got to work there for a little while after my studies, but then had to eventually return back home for good to Europe. Now I can't find a job here and it's been more than 1 year!!! The main reason for that is that they don't see the bachelor's as a degree and require a Masters all the time for everything. But that degree would take me another 2 years and I really really need work experience. Nobody in the world even cares about some stupid regular Masters in business (IT's NOT AN MBA!!!), but in my country they do. I'll be an absolute educational idiot by the time I would be out because I'm pushing 30 already right now and don't have any good job experience at all beside my job in the States before. I don't really have a clue what to do anymore. Originally I wanted to keep on working, work myself up a little, and potentially do the MBA. But how should I do that with no real work experience and such a long unemployment gap. I have no clue what to do now and really struggle with money as well. more

I graduated from college in May 2009 with a bachelor's degree in business marketing with a minor in international relations. While in college I was in a sorority and had the opportunity to work in the admissions office. I was involved in a lot of student activities, studied abroad, and did a few internships. I haven't had any luck landing jobs in my field. I moved back in with my parents and have been working in retail until something comes up. I was recently accepted into graduate school for a master's degree in college student affairs, but I also interviewed for a full-time entry level job at a global advertising firm. I am very unsure of what direction to take, and just wanted to get some input about each direction. I definately enjoyed the college experience, and I think it would be neat to work at a college, but it is all I've known. I like learning, and the college environment. Part of me thinks that I might just be attracted to it because it's all I've known. However advertising/marketing is what I went to school for, but since I haven't worked in it, I'm not sure direction I can take with it. There's a lot that I want to do in my life, but I'm not sure what my end goal is. I feel like I'll figure out what my "dream" is as I go, but I need to start somewhere. I'm also unsure if it would be unwise to turn down a full-time to pursue grad school. I know I'd like to get a master's degree someday for sure and work on the international level but just not sure what direction. Suggestions? more

I am working on the sales side in a small IT placement company in San Jose and have about 1/5 years of experience. I want to move from sales into a recruiting/HR role. I already have a master's degree in International Business from UK so not really in mood of another Master's degree. Will a certificate program in Human Resources help getting my foot in the HR role? I was thinking of UCSC extension Silicon Valley? My husband thinks it is tough competing with candidates who hold a degree. I know he is right but is a certificate program a complete waste. Resolved Question: What exactly is a business school?

I always thought it's for postgrad students that want to do an MBA or some business relevant masters. That's what I thought. But now I'm a bit confused. For instance. Macquarie University in Australia offers a Master of International Business and a Master of Commerce. But it's taught by the faculty of Business & Economics and not their business school. At other schools the same majors are taught by the business school. So why are some of these Masters offered by the university and others such as the MBA always by the Business School? more

Hi, I am a final year student at the University of Warwick, and an International Student. Tired of moving around, I really want to find someplace to live. People have told me fantastic things about Melbourne and I am love with the city. The problem is University of Melbourne doesnt have my course (they do but it requires 5+ years work experience), MONASH does but they also require work experience (2 years), and RMIT has it, but is not the best university. Should I go for a Masters in Melbourne or stay in ANU and Uni. Syndey? I really want to do a Masters in Marketing and possibly get a job after. Resolved Question: Aston University (UK) and future job prospects?

Hi! I am an international student who has an offer for a masters degree in business from Aston university, Newcastle university and Warwick university in the UK. Although I like the course content and the course of Aston, my cousin in the UK recommends Warwick or Newcastle as they are in the "Russell" group of universities which is supposed to be a group of universities with the highest reputation. This has put me in a fix as to which university to opt for my masters. Are job prospects better if I opt for a Russell group university? I am terribly confused! Please help! I graduated in the spring of 2009 with a bachelor's degree in public relations and minor in international relations. While attending college I was able to work in the admissions office, which is also a form of public relations. However my coursework concentrated on pr/business. I would definately like to get a master's degree quickly, especially since I have the drive at this age to do it. I have been interviewing for quite a few jobs both in higher education and with an international pr agency. Working in admissions, I could get a master's for free from the college I work at, and at the agency, they would pay for you the master's degree. However, I already submitted 8 graduate school applications (both for a master's in international communications, and college student affairs), so I am wondering what happens if I get a full ride there. So much to think about.. What is the best job opportunity?? College admissions, a global pr firm, or going straight for a master's?? My problem is I'm not sure what I want to do exactly. I think it'd be fun to work at a college, but I also think I'd enjoy working in international public relations. I know that I want to work on the global level, but working at a college I could grow into international admissions or study abroad. Global PR there is a ton of growth in that too. I know as an end goal I'd like to be a professor of cross cultural relations. More than anything though, I just want to get out of the state that I live in. Most of the opportunities that I've been offered are in the state... Suggestions? What is the best route to take with this economy? more

I have an interview for a full-time job with a huge public relations agency, with a lot of growth opportunity. It'd be an entry-level job, but it would expose me to working with several global agencies and businesses. However, I have already submitted about 8 graduate school applications for a master's degree in international communications. None of them are near the agency at all geographically. I know that I want to work on the international level. I already took the time/money to apply to schools so if I end up getting in and getting an assistantship, it is going to be really tempting. However, I feel like this opportunity is good, and since it's entry level there's a chance that I could relocate somewhere after a few years. Therefore, I don't want to try and work on a graduate degree while there until I know I would be staying in that location for a while. What should I do? Do I take the job, and if I get into grad school, quit? Do I just turn down a job offer in hopes of getting an assistantship into grad school? Do I take the job and put grad school on the backburner?
