Whatever Happened to the Neches River Businesses?

Nick Maselli opened "Rena's Icehouse" about four months ago, and he says business was fair. But it's not anymore.

"You know the bars close in Lufkin about midnight," says Maselli. "They used to say, 'Let's go to the river,' and now they say, 'Let's just go to Brookshire's and get a six pack, and go home and drink.'"

Maselli has already had to raise his prices to keep up with rising beer prices. And now jsut months after opening, he's gone from being open seven nights a week...to four.

Jimmy Goodwin can relate, although he's having a little more success. "Jimmy's Bar" has been open for nearly 23 years, and Goodwin says the name recognition is a big reason he's still seing steady customers, but that doesn't mean he's seeing as much income. more

Resolved Question: Is it alright with you if the government monitors your driving 24/7 in the fight against global warming?

A report released today by the UK Government's Sustainable Development Commission calls for around-the-clock monitoring of driver's speed to force them to slow down and help cut down their emissions of Co2 in the battle against global warming. It calls for taking control of the car's speed away from the driver and having it controlled by the government via satellite. Is that alright with you? The report said: [quote] ----------------------------------------------------------- ""The UK Sustainable Development Commission yesterday released a report recommending the use of average speed cameras for round-the-clock tracking of motorist journeys nationwide. The government advisory body said that widespread deployment of average speed cameras was required to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide by automobiles, a factor that some believe is linked to global changes in temperature. The report made a number of recommendations affecting the driving public. "The business models associated with private motoring are not aligned with sustainability," the report explained The report also called for a "clear timetable" for the introduction of Intelligent Speed Adaptation technology that would use global positioning satellites to take away control of vehicle speed from the driver, making it impossible for a car to exceed the limit on a given road. The same information communications technology (ICT) infrastructure could be used for congestion pricing, tolling of every journey and charging for insurance by the number of miles driven. The commission explained that such systems would require a substantial and ongoing financial investment."" --------------------------------------------------------------- It also said that such a system could be a big step towards road-pricing where every journey would be taxed appropriately. Of course, this is just the UK, but once the technology is in place and shown to work, no doubt there will be calls by international bodies to roll it out worldwide to help fight global warming. http://www.thenewspaper.com/news/30/3031.aspThe full report is available here: http://www.sd-commission.org.uk/EDIT - @ Vampire Muffin Man. Well said. For commercial vehicles it many be worth looking at as an industry standard. But not private vehicles, that as you say is fascistic. more

Voting Question: Would someone please give me an informative breakdown on the subject of "International Relations"?

I'm choosing college classes at the moment and the "International Relations" course looked interesting because I perceived it as a class similar to International Business or International Governments or something of that nature. It was listed under Political Science. Here is the school catalog entry: "An introduction to basic factors, concepts and theory of international relations. The objectivs, methods and capabilities of modern states and other non-state actors will be surveyed. A study will be made of the institutional form of international relations, ideological orientations and objectives. Emphasis will be on the trends and transformation of the international system during and after the Cold War." The entry seems to lack a clear definition or picture of the subject I don't know what to make of it.Giving it the time frame of after the cold war makes it sound more like a modern history class. Can someone please explain to me what is learned in an International Relations course? Thanks! :) more

Resolved Question: helpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp?

Part 1 - Analyzing Primary Sources: (2 points each / 10 total points) Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow. The passage is an excerpt from President Bill Clinton’s State of the Union address in January 1998. . . . As we enter the twenty-first century, the global economy requires us to seek opportunity not just at home, but in all markets of the world. We must shape this global economy, not shrink from it. In the last five years, we have led the way in opening new markets, with 240 trade agreements that remove foreign barriers to products bearing the proud stamp “Made in the U.S.A.” Today, record high exports account for fully one-third of our economic growth. I want to keep them growing, because that’s the way to keep America growing and to advance a safer, more stable world. . . . I know there is opposition to more comprehensive trade agreements. I have listened carefully and I believe that the opposition is rooted in two fears: first, that our trading partners will have lower environmental and labor standards, which will give them an unfair advantage in our market and do their own people no favors, even if there’s more business; and, second, that if we have more trade, more of our workers will lose their jobs and have to start over. I think we should seek to advance worker and environmental standards around the world. I have made it abundantly clear that it should be a part of our trade agenda. But we cannot influence other countries’ decisions if we send them a message that we’re backing away from trade with them. 1. According to President Clinton, what accounted for one-third of U.S. economic growth? 2. What opposition to comprehensive trade agreements does President Clinton acknowledge? 3. What did President Clinton make “abundantly clear” should be a part of the trade agenda? 4. Why does President Clinton want to keep trade agreements going? 5. In the following quotation, what “decisions” is President Clinton referring to? “But we cannot influence other countries’ decisions if we send them a message that we’re backing away from trade with them.” Part Two – Interpreting Graphs: (2 points each / 6 points total) Use the graph below to answer the following questions: oWhat does the graph show? oWhat trend (pattern) do you see? oHow can you explain this trend? Part 3 – Writing: (15 points total) Does protectionism, particularly tariffs and quotas, help or hinder international trade? Protectionism policies are put in place to protect a nation’s domestic economy. Provide examples to help support your answer. You need to provide three examples for full credit. Use the content reading and the Online Resource Center to help answer the essay questions. Use the 1-3-1 writing technique (introduction-support-conclusion) to answer the question. Topics to help support your answer: NAFTA(North American Free Trade Agreement) Embargo of Cuban goods (sugar, cigars) World Trade Organization General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) more

Resolved Question: Can any one translate this from gobbldey goop to English?

business plans structure Title page: Title or heading of the plan and brief description if required, author, date, company/organization if applicable, details of circulation and confidentiality. Contents page: A list of contents (basically the sections listed here, starting with the Introduction page) showing page numbers, plus a list of appendices or addendums (added reference material at the back of the document) allowing the reader to find what they need and navigate the document easily, and to refer others to particular items and page numbers when reviewing or querying. Introduction page: Introduction and purpose of the plan, terms of reference if applicable (usually for formal and large plans or projects). Executive summary page: Optional and usually beneficial, this should normally be no more than a page long (or it's not an executive summary) - the key points of the whole plan including conclusions, recommendations, actions, financial returns on investment, etc., clearly readable in a few minutes. Main body of plan: sections and headings as required, see template below. Acknowledgments and bibliography/reference sources: if relevant (only required normally for very large formal plans) Appendices: appendices or addendums - additional detailed reference material, examples, statistics, spreadsheets, etc., for reference and not central to the main presentation of your plan. business plans - main body sections examples template This sample template is typical for a sales/marketing/new business development business plan. (A business plan for a more complex project such as an international joint-venture, or the formation of a new company including manufacturing plant or other overhead activities would need to include relevant information and financials about the overheads and resources concerned, and the financials would need to show costs and profits more like a fully developed profit and loss account, with cashflow projections, balance sheet, etc.) Where appropriate refer to your position regarding corporate ethics and social responsibility. While these aspects are not mechanisms within the plan, they are crucial reference points. 1.Define your market - sector(s) and segment(s) definitions 2.Quantify your market (overview only) - size, segmentation, relevant statistics, values, numbers (locations, people/users, etc) - make this relevant to you business 3.Explain your market(s) - sector trends, eg., growth, legislation, seasonality, PEST factors where relevant, refer to Ansoff matrix, show the strategic business drivers within sector and segments, purchasing mechanisms, processes, restrictions - what are the factors that determine customers' priorities and needs - this is a logical place to refer to ethics and CSR (corporate social responsibility 4.Explain your existing business - your current business according to sector, products/services, quantities, values, distributor, etc. 5.Analyse your existing customer spread by customer type, values and products/services including major accounts (the 'Pareto Principle' or the '80:20 rule' often applies here, eg., 80% of your business comes from 20% of your customers) 6.Explain your products and services - refer to Boston matrix and especially your strategic propositions (what these propositions will do for your customers) including your USP's and UPB's (see sales training section and acronyms) 7.Explain you routes to market, gatekeepers, influencers and strategic partners - the other organizations/individuals you will work with to develop your market, including 'what's in it for them', commissions, endorsements, accreditations, approvals, licenses, etc. 8.Case studies and track record - the credibility, evidence and proof that your propositions and strategic partnerships work 9.Competitor analysis, eg., SWOT analysis of your own business compared to SWOT analysis of each competitor 10.Sales/marketing/business plan (1 year min) showing sales and margins by product/service stream, mix, values, segment, 'distributor', etc, whatever is relevant, phased monthly, in as much detail as you need. This should be on a spreadsheet, with as many different sheets as necessary to quantify relevant inputs and outputs. 11.List your strategic actions (marketing campaigns, sales activities, advertising, etc) that will deliver the above, with costs and returns. This should be supported with a spreadsheet, showing cost and return on investment for each activity. Tip: If the business plan concerns an existing activity, use the previous year's sales/business analysis as the basis for the next year's sales/business plan. Adapt as necessary according to your new strategic plans. more

Resolved Question: Should I major in economics or finance?

I attend Binghamton University which offers financial economics (Liberal Arts School) and management with a concentration in finance (Business School). Below, I listed future jobs that I'm considering ordered by my level of interest. For each of the listed jobs, which major would be more beneficial? What do you suggest that I major in? Voting Question: Isn't the point of insurance to INSURE you during a time of crises?? (WTF is AIG doing??)?

I thought we bailed out AIG so the company wouldn't fold and leave people without their insurance. WTF?? http://finance.yahoo.com/insurance/article/107188/aig-balks-at-Claims-from-jet-ditching-in-hudson For the first couple of days after his flight ditched into the Hudson River, Paul Jorgenson was just glad to be alive. But then he started to need his laptop, his wallet, his car keys -- all the essentials he had stowed under his seat and left behind in the sinking plane. A pleasant woman at US Airways told him not to worry; he would be made whole for his losses. But then the matter shifted to US Airways' insurer, the American International Group, operating under government stewardship since its bailout last fall. "Everything went downhill," said Mr. Jorgenson, a software executive in Charlotte, N.C., whose laptop and keys have not been recovered......"Insurance companies try to protect their assets, obviously," said Bruce D. Chadbourne, a co-author of the book, "Introduction to Aviation Insurance and Risk Management," and a professor in the business school at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla. With the airline wearing a halo, A.I.G. "is going to play hardball."................Ms. Sosa said Sophia "remembers everything. I just want her to walk away from this knowing that we did everything we could to make it make sense." A.I.G. agents have told her that for therapy she should use her own health insurance, but it has a $3,000 deductible for mental health care. "Why should we be paying out of pocket?" she said. "That's why they're there. They're the insurer." more

To find out, we surveyed the CEOs of Forbes's "100 Largest Multinational Firms" and Fortune's "America's 50 Biggest Exporters." We found that: (1) Seventy-nine percent believed that all business majors should take an introduction to international business course. (2) About 70 percent felt that business graduates' expertise in foreign languages, international aspects of functional areas (e.g., marketing, finance), and business, human, or political relations outside the United States is an important consideration when making hiring decisions. (3) A majority of the respondents believed that a number of courses in the international business curriculum (e.g., international marketing, international finance, export-import, international management) are relevant to their companies. Resolved Question: Are these fraudulent services: usabox.com,rigamaildrop.com,nymail.com,rt-log.com,bongous.com,bpm-lux.com?

Hello, I would like to make a brief introduction about myself. I am the lead singer/vocalist in a rock/pop band, The Embezzles, (name have been changed quite a few times within the past few months)and we’re very similar to Paramore and Linkin Park. We’re sort of a big deal in East Texas with an increasing fan base which continues to grow expendably great but we have a big problem communicating and contacting fans. We’ve tried everything from Post Office boxes, Private Mailboxes and social networking sties. Unfortunately, the Postal Services are on shaky ground. Postal Services have rules and regulations to combat mail fraud and other crimes committed using postal and private mailboxes which sounds convincing but the postal services are on the wrong side here. Rather than protecting privacy they are seeking to invade it and rather than allowing some consumer choice they are looking to stifle what little competition exists. Unfortunately, scam artists also utilize the convenience of private mailboxes to hide illegal activities, such as credit card fraud, identity theft and schemes to swindle the elderly. In other words or simple terms, P.O. boxes and Private Mailboxes are growing concerns of the postal services used in order to single out P.O. boxes and PMB(private mailboxes) who have personal accounts instead of business accounts. We would like to have an address rather than using one of our own physical home address because you guys are aware of fans(groupies) can be a bit psychotic at times when bands are in the limelight destined for stardom. Instead of selling merchandise, passing out flyers, etc. from our tour van/hotel (lol) J, we decided that we want to be able to reach fans outside of our 100 mile radius giving fans the opportunity to write personal letters to one our band members, pics or whatever the fans want to give their favorite band (The Embezzles ) <<<<<promotion tactic>>>>>,in order to converse on numerous occasions, but we do not want to give the government or postal office or any carrier service speculations or any misleading ideas that we are subjecting to a scheme to earn money or somehow get personal information from individuals. All we want is to build a connection with our fans in order to solidify our relationships to remind them of upcoming tour dates, nearby performances, or any updates we might have in order to refresh the memories of our fans. We were recommended on some international mail forwarding service sites but getting an international P.O. or Private box seems a little suspect, wouldn’t you agree? Although they offer great services they only require your personal information….sometimes to much information. I have scavenged many postal services sites and some websites seem a bit puzzling. Even though they have U.S. Postal Forms and identification requirements they false advertise and some sites even have numerous complaints from previous customers. If I were to come across one of these misleading websites how would I be able to recognize a true and faithful postal or forwarding service from any other website posing as a legit mail forwarding service? Are there any services that allows you to apply online if so this would be my first option to cut out the hassle and run around the postal services have been giving us. Thanks for your all your time and help.  more

If I were to come across one of these misleading websites how would I be able to recognize a true and faithful postal or forwarding service from any other website posing as a legit mail forwarding service? Are there any services that allows you to apply online if so this would be my first option to cut out the hassle and run around the postal services have been giving us. Resolved Question: P.O. Box, Private Mailbox, Mailforwarding Servies are not the best options for musicians because of scams?

Resolved Question: Obama's Pastor Circulates Hamas Manifesto, What do you all think about this?

By Aaron Klein JERUSALEM – Sen. Barack Obama's Chicago church reprinted a manifesto by Hamas that defended terrorism as legitimate resistance, refused to recognize the right of Israel to exist and compared the terror group's official charter – which calls for the murder of Jews – to America's Declaration of Independence. The Hamas piece was published on the "Pastor's Page" of the Trinity United Church of Christ newsletter reserved for Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., whose anti-American, anti-Israel remarks landed Obama in hot water, prompting the presidential candidate to deliver a major race speech earlier this week. Hamas, responsible for scores of shootings, suicide bombings and rocket launchings against civilian population centers, is listed as a terrorist group by the U.S. State Department. The revelation follows a recent WND article quoting Israeli security officials who expressed "concern" about Robert Malley, an adviser to Obama who has advocated negotiations with Hamas and providing international assistance to the terrorist group. In his July 22, 2007, church newsletter, Wright reprinted an article by Mousa Abu Marzook, identified in the publication as a "deputy of the political bureau of Hamas." A photo image of the piece was captured and posted today by the business blog BizzyBlog, which first brought attention to it. The Hamas article was first published by the Los Angeles Times, garnering the newspaper much criticism. According to senior Israeli security officials, Marzook, who resides in Syria alongside Hamas chieftain Khaled Meshaal, is considered the "brains" behind Hamas, designing much of the terror group's policies and ideology. Israel possesses what it says is a large volume of specific evidence that Marzook has been directly involved in calling for or planning scores of Hamas terrorist offensives, including deadly suicide bombings. He was also accused of attempting to set up a Hamas network in the U.S. Marzook's original piece was titled, "Hamas' stand" but was re-titled "A Fresh View of the Palestinian Struggle" by Obama's church newsletter. The newsletter also referred to Hamas as the "Islamic Resistance Movement," and added in its introduction that Marzook was addressing Hamas' goals for "all of Palestine." In the manifesto, Marzook refers to Hamas' "resistance" – the group's perpetuation of anti-Israel terrorism targeting civilians – as "legal resistance," which, he argues, is "explicitly supported by the Fourth Geneva Convention." The Convention, which refers to the rights of people living under occupation, does not support suicide bombings or rocket attacks against civilian population centers, the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America noted. Marzook refers to Hamas' official charter as "an essentially revolutionary document" and compares the violent creed to the Declaration of Independence, which, Marzook states, "simply did not countenance any such status for the 700,000 African slaves at that time." Hamas' charter calls for the murder of Jews. Among its platforms is a statement that the "[resurrection] will not take place until the Muslims fight the Jews and the Muslims kill them, and the rock and the tree will say: 'Oh Muslim, servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, kill him!'" In his piece, Marzook says Hamas only targets Israel and denies that Hamas' war is meant to be waged against the U.S., even though Hamas officials have threatened America, and Hamas' charter calls for Muslims to "pursue the cause of the Movement (Hamas), all over the globe." Trinity Church did not respond to a phone message requesting comment. Obama's campaign also did not reply to phone and e-mail requests today for comment. Obama aide wants talks with terrorists WND reported in January that Malley, an Obama foreign policy adviser, has penned numerous opinion articles, many of them co-written with a former adviser to the late Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat, petitioning for dialogue with Hamas and blasting Israel for policies he says harm the Palestinian cause. Malley also previously penned a well-circulated New York Review of Books piece largely blaming Israel for the collapse of the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations at Camp David in 2000 when Arafat turned down a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and eastern sections of Jerusalem and instead returned to the Middle East to launch an intifada, or terrorist campaign, against the Jewish state. Malley's contentions have been strongly refuted by key participants at Camp David, including President Clinton, then-Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and primary U.S. envoy to the Middle East Dennis Ross, all of whom squarely blamed Arafat's refusal to make peace for the talks' failure. In February 2006, after Hamas won a majority of seats in the Palestinian parliament and amid a U.S. and Israeli attempt to isolate the Hamas-run Palestinian Authority, Malley wrote an op-ed for the Baltimore Sun advocating international aid to the terror group's newly formed government. "The Islamists (Hamas) ran on a campaign of effective government and promised to improve Palestinians' lives; they cannot do that if the international community turns its back," wrote Malley in a piece entitled, "Making the Best of Hamas' Victory." Malley contended the election of Hamas expressed Palestinian "anger at years of humiliation and loss of self-respect because of Israeli settlement expansion, Arafat's imprisonment, Israel's incursions, Western lecturing and, most recently and tellingly, the threat of an aid cutoff in the event of an Islamist success." Malley said the U.S. should not "discourage third-party unofficial contacts with [Hamas] in an attempt to moderate it." In an op-ed in the Washington Post in January coauthored by Arafat adviser Hussein Agha, Malley – using what could be perceived as anti-Israel language – urged Israel's negotiating partner, Abbas, to reunite with Hamas. "A renewed national compact and the return of Hamas to the political fold would upset Israel's strategy of perpetuating Palestinian geographic and political division," wrote Malley. He further petitioned Israel to hold talks with Hamas. "An arrangement between Israel and Hamas could advance both sides' interests," Malley wrote. In numerous other op-eds, Malley advocated a policy of engagement with Hamas. more

FROM:JOHNSON KUBA. TEL:+27-834-949-966 FAX:+27-865-293-996 E-mail:+johnson_kuba1960@yahoo.com NO.10 ANDERSON STREET JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA. ATTENTION: DIRECTOR /CEO. STRICTLY PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL You may be surprised to receive this letter from me since you don't know me personally, the purpose of my introduction is that, I am MR.JOHNSON KUBA,the first SON of MR.PEDRO KUBA,a farmer and leader movement for democratic change (MDC)in Zimbabwe who was murdered in the land dispute in Zimbabwe. I was furnished with viable information from the International Trade Centre here in Johannesburg and I decided to write to you. Before the death of my father, he had taken me to Johannesburg to deposit the sum of US$8 M (EIGHT MILLION DOLLARS), in a Security Company, as if he fore saw the looming danger in Zimbabwe. This amount was meant for the purchase of new machines and chemicals for the farms and the establishment of the new farms in Swaziland. This land problem came when Zimbabwean President MR.ROBERT MUGABE introduced a new Land Act which wholly affected the rich white farmers and some few black farmers. This resulted to the killing and mob action by Zimbabwean war veterans and some lunatics in the society. Infact, alot of people have been killed because of this land reformed Act for which my father was one of the victims. It is against this background, that I and my family who are currently staying in South Africa decided to transfer my father's money to foreign account since the law of South Africa prohibit a refugee (asylum seeker) to open any bank account or to be involved in any financial transaction. As the eldest SON of my father, I am saddled with the responsibility of seeking a genuine foreign account where this money could be transferred without the knowledge of my government who are bent on taking everything we have got. I am faced with the dilemma of investing this amount of money in South Africa for fear of going through the same experience in future since both countries have similar political history. Moreover, the South African Foreign Exchange policy does not allow such investment as an asylum seeker. As a business man, whom I have entrusted my future and of my family in his hands, I must let you know that this transaction is risk free. If you accept to assist me and my family. Will aid us in transferring the money into any account you will nominate overseas. This money I intend to use for investment. I have two options for you, firstly you can choose to have a certain percentage of the money for nominating your account for this transaction. Or you can go into partnership with me for the proper profitable investment of the money in your country. Which ever the option you want, feel free to notify me as I have also mapped out 5% of this money for all kinds of expenses incurred in the process of this transaction. If you do not prefer a partnership I am willing to give you 20% of the money while the remaining 75% will be for my investment in your country. Contact me with the above telephone number while I implore you to maintain the absolute secrecy required in this transaction. And no matter the level of transaction we are, you must call me on phone first before sending a reply. Please, you should keep this transaction secret and confidential. And send your fax and telephone numbers for easy communication. Call me first. N/B.I would like you to furnish me with the following: 1) YOUR PRIVATE PHONE AND FAX NUMBERS. 2) YOUR FULL NAME. 3) YOUR FULL ADDRESS. THANKS FOR YOUR CO-OPERATION JOHNSON KUBA (FOR THE FAMILY more

Resolved Question: I am introducing the CEO/President of Wells Fargo???

I am an International Business major at SCSU in Minnesota. Two days ago I was given the opportunity to introduce an alum of our Finance program, John Stumpf. I recognize this opportunity as one of a lifetime and would like to know if anyone has any good ideas for my introduction? My intro will be brief, no longer than 2 minutes. Thank you in advance for your help! I appreciate your thoughts! On a side note he graduated high school in rural central Minnesota. The town in which he graduated from is right next door to the town I graduated from. I think I will make some mention of this as it is quite the coincidence. more

Resolved Question: This is my introduction and my first point/definition of state terrorism. Is it alright?

You’re either with us or with the terrorists: Defining the term “terrorism” The Monday morning rush hour was in full force, the subway trains rolling. For thousands of citizens, the relaxing weekend trips to the beach and the zoo were still in their minds. One individual had other thoughts on his mind. The weekend was spent making last preparations for a plan that will forever change the lives of him and the thousands of people standing right next to him. He was sweating bullets and clearing his throat constantly, yet, nobody was giving him suspicious looks. At last, a train came to a stop at the station he was residing at. He entered the train calmly, allowing others to enter ahead of him. When the train left the station, it was down to business. He reached into his pocket, where he kept the detonation device. Terrorism has been taking place in the world for centuries. Ever since the terrorist attacks on 9/11, the word terrorism has become a feared word. There isn’t a day that goes by that goes by where the word terrorism isn’t used by the main stream media. But, how is the word terrorism defined? The Oxford English Dictionary (1989) defines terrorism as “A policy intended to strike terror against whom it is adopted”. This paper will introduce to you three different types of terrorism: state, domestic and international by defining them and giving examples of each and with the information I will define terrorism in my own words. Government Involvement When a person usually thinks about terrorism, they think about a small group whose views are so rare and outrageous, that they use force and fear to become known or to become more powerful. But many times governments, including the United States, use violence against innocent people. P. Simpson (2002) defines state terrorism in his article “The war on terrorism: Its moral justification and limits” as “acts of violence used by governments and government forces against parts of their own people or against other peoples” (p. 11). Many governments do not believe that what they are doing is a form of terrorism. They use their power to invite or end wars by killing innocent civilians. If you were to look at World War II, you could see many forms of state terrorism. World War II officially began after Nazi Germany invaded neighboring Poland on September 1, 1939. Two days later, on September 3, Britain declared war on Germany. “The London Blitz, 1940” (2001) describes that Adolf Hitler planned on a bombing campaign on the city of London to demoralize the British citizens and call for a surrender. The bombing on London began on September 7, 1940 and for 57 days they were constantly being bombarded. Over 177,000 citizens were placed in bomb shelters during the night to protect them from the bombardment. On May 11, 1941, all bombing on the British capital was ceased due to Germany’s new campaign on the eastern front against the Russians (para. 1-2). This act would be defined as an act of state terrorism because of the motives behind the bombing of London. Hitler wanted to demoralize the citizens of Britain. The campaign was not intended to take out military bases, equipment, etc. Though history defines the Axis powers of World War II as the “bad” side, a nation on the Allied powers also used state terrorism to end the war for good. With the War in Europe already over, the United States could finally focus entirely on the Pacific, where the Japanese were putting up a good fight. President Harry Truman had to make a decision that would eventually end the war in the Pacific. He decided to drop an atomic bomb in Japan. According to “The atomic bombing of Hiroshima”, (n.d.) on August 6, 1945 at 8:15 a.m. an atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima. Hiroshima had a population of 300,000 civilians and there were about 43,000 soldiers stationed in or around Hiroshima. 70,000 people were initially killed by the blast and within five years over 200,000 people died resulting from the explosion (para. 1-2, 6). This event right here is quite arguable on whether or not it is a form of state terrorism. We were engaged in a war with Japan at the time, so you could argue that it was an act of war. The thing is that there were 300,000 innocent citizens residing in Hiroshima. They did nothing wrong and didn’t deserve to be killed. When at war, you are fighting the opposite military, not the citizens living in the country you are at war with. more
