Vertical Announces Plans to Voluntarily Deregister its Common Stock

Upon the filing of the Form 15, Vertical's reporting obligation will be to file its June 30, 2008 Form 10-K as in the normal course of business and all other future obligations to file certain reports with the SEC, including Forms 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K, will be suspended. Vertical expects that the deregistration of its common stock will become effective 90 days after the date of filing the Form 15 with the SEC. Vertical anticipates that its common stock will no longer be quoted on the Over-the-Counter Bulletin Board, and expects that, following deregistration with the SEC, its common stock will be quoted on the Pink Sheets(R), an electronic quotation service for over-the-counter securities. The Pink Sheets is a provider of pricing and financial information for the over-the-counter securities markets. more

'Stereotype'? Yes and no

One is that doctoral programs in business disciplines encourage applications from women (and men) seeking a "second career," often because family responsibilities make flexible hours — even though long hours — seem like a wonderful alternative to one's current job.

Also, the focus on academic research is as real in a business field as in science — but no "post-doc" is needed after completion of the doctoral program to be offered a faculty position.

Finally, we at the Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston, the only place in Houston offering business doctorates, give half-time financial support and a tuition waiver to all accepted applicants, and we are looking for verbal and quantitative skills, certainly not a specific gender.

InBev snags Anheuser-Busch and its marketing clout

But InBev SA has an ambitious plan behind its $52 billion acquisition of Anheuser-Busch, hoping to tap into the U.S. company's massive marketing power and make the Budweiser and Bud Light brands into globally recognized products akin to Coca-Cola or Pepsi.

Leaving marketing untouched, though, will mean cuts elsewhere. InBev expects to wring out $1.5 billion in annual savings, most of which will come from better managing the supply chain. InBev keeps a sharp eye on costs, forcing managers to justify every cent spent.

Anheuser-Busch Cos. agreed to the sweetened $70 per share bid late Sunday to create the world's largest brewer and head off what was shaping up as an acrimonious fight. Swallowing Anheuser-Busch will give InBev, the maker of brands including Stella Artois, Beck's and Bass, half the U.S. more

Verizon’s wireless business shines; ‘Comfortable’ with FiOS adds

Verizon topped its second quarter targets Monday courtesy of a strong wireless business and executives said demand is holding up despite economic concerns.

The telecom giant reported second quarter earnings of 66 cents a share and 67 cents a share excluding integration costs. Wall Street was expecting earnings of 65 cents a share. Revenue was up 3.7 percent from a year ago to $24.1 billion, a tally that was roughly in line with expectations.

Verizon's big story–as is the case with most quarters (statement)–was the company's wireless business, which continues to enjoy decent subscriber growth and low churn. AT&T also had strong wireless results. The takeaway: AT&T and Verizon are taking share from other carriers, but not necessarily each other. In fact, Verizon said it hasn't seen any defections due to AT&T's iPhone launch (despite what you could argue is a weaker phone lineup). more

Starting a business from behind bars

Ask FSB's experts advise an inmate looking to launch a business upon his release.

Darren Montville, Collins Correctional Facility, Collins, N.Y. I, along with my father, would like to open a restaurant and catering company. I was wondering if you could give me as much advice as possible about small businesses, restaurants, catering, etc. I have plenty of great ideas that I believe will bring me investors and customers, but I need information. I don't want to fail at my business, and I'm eager to do well.

By Annalyn Censky, Fortune Small Business contributor Dear Darren: Jobs opportunities can be limited if you've served time, so entrepreneurship presents an attractive option for an ex-con. Catherine Rohr, the head of the Prison Entrepreneurship Program (PEP) in Houston, encourages you to pursue your dream - but only after you get back on your feet. more
