Social marketing firm Powered gets new CEO

Powered Inc., a social marketing and technology firm, has named Ken Nicolson president and CEO.

Nicolson most recently served as chief marketing officer at Pluck, a social media software firm, which was acquired by online media company Demand Media Inc. earlier this year.

He is replacing Dave Ellett, who is now president and general manager of Dallas-based Belo Interactive Media.

At Powered, Nicolson will be charged with overseeing day-to-day operations, market expansion and product development. The company has a 70-person office in downtown Austin and a new office in Silicon Valley.

Powered's signature product is Panorama, a social marketing platform that lets businesses post and manage product-related data, blogs, message boards, online courses and customer-generated reviews. more

EA Looking To Market Crysis Ready PCs

Electronic Arts is looking at marketing a line of desktop PC systems to coincide with the release of Crysis Warhead, branded with the Crysis name. The reasoning? More people who don't regularly use a PC to game will pick up a PC branded with a game name simply for the assurance that the system will run the title. They are looking at providing multiple systems at a price tag between $600-$800 to coincide with how well the gamer wants the game to run.

This is a brilliant idea. I've always felt that PC manufacturers were missing out by not marketing directly to gamers. I'm not talking high-end, higher-priced dedicated gaming systems here. Just a PC with a sticker on it that lists the games it will run out of the box - kind of like how console packaging shows popular titles available on that system. more

Beacon Street Girls Launches New Community Targeting Tweens

Unlike Flip, however, BSG is (unsurprisingly) heavily branded with one theme in mind, utilizing the network as a marketing platform for related products like books and sleepover kits.

That's not to say that it's a bad thing. Flip had trouble meeting initial expectations with its niche network, despite its potential as a marketing playground where users could decorate their virtual lockers with posters featuring different bands and things of that nature. But BSG is so niche, given its connection with the BSG book series that its targeting goals and capabilities are likely different than those of Flip.

There are other branding and marketing opportunities, however. Certain celebrities will offer featured content, free downloads, and posters, giving members even more ways to personalize their profile pages, and even their computers and *gasp* MySpace pages. more

Resolved Question: Business credit question?

Does "EIN" stand for "Employer Identification Number"? D and B: "Dunn and Broad-street"? This last definition I'm not sure of the spelling. I am trying to help a friend who owns/operates a small child day-care. She has been in business for 5+years but has terrible personal credit. I was asked to research the possibility of getting a Business line of credit for her operation. When I first asked a similar question on Y/A someone who seemed very knowledgeable about this topic suggested securing an EIN and also getting listed(?) with D and B. She also suggested that my friend have a phone line listed to the childcare business, perhaps a website for the childcare, or any other "official" listing that my friend can show as proof when she goes for credit at a local business(just for example: Staples). This kind of information is out of my league so I'm going to the library today to search for books on the operation of small businesses and securing small business credit. Can anyone suggest good books in this area? (One title that I picked up on an Internet blog was: "My Book:The Business Credit Bible". Anyone familiar with this one? One blogger gave this book a thumbs up Another blogger said the information was dated. I will be very thankful for any and all information and advice. Voting Question: Can Everyone Please Post Their Passive Income Business Ideas Here and come and look at all these ideas?

Im 18 and have constanly been reading and listening to books about passive income, via various streams, and have decided maybe to start a small question thread here to post ideas and also ask for ideas from the community so we can all benefit from one another's ideas. Basically the idea is to own a business that makes you money while you do nothing, so you dont physically have to make the money yourself. Some of my ideas include things such as: Coin Operated vending machines (i have heard however that these are becoming increasingly harder to make money off of as although there are always locations, the returns are not necessarily incredibly huge, and finding locations and emptying/refilling the machines as well as collecting the money do take some time.) Coin operated laundry machines. (laundromat) i love this idea because you can make the business on your own so finding the locations is no problem at all, and the returns are likely better than the vending machines as well. also, these could be used in your rental properties if you use those for passive income too. Rental properties i love this idea for the fact that if you get educated in real estate, you can get better deals than the average guy resulting in less headaches and loss if you happen to have problems with tenants. i love the idea of charging more than the mortgage cost so as to get payed monthly, as well as having your tenants essentially buy you a property over a certain amount of time. everyone buys where they live, it's just a matter of if someone is buying where they live and instead of keeping it for hemselves, basically giving it to you. Advertisements i know there are companies who will pay you by the month/year etc to place a small (or large who knows) advertisement on your vehicle for their business. if you have 2, 3, 4, or even just one vehicle, wouldnt it be smart to do this even if you dont really drive it? i know there are some however who pay based on the milage accumulated, but still if you are getting payed to drive somewhere you actually have to go anyways, i think thats pretty cool Blogging this is not for me but ive read that many people who have blogs or are internet savvy can make even small residual incomes for just creating a blog. this does take initial startup time and you obviously have to write the blogs, but you still make money while you sleep. Business if you can own a business that makes money without you being there. if you can make enough profit to pay a manager to manage instead of you, once the building is payed off (you have to own the property obviously), there you go. another twist on this would be a car wash, because you could own the car wash and the land, and eventually when you have payed it off, will reap the full profits, have been payed for the past so many years anyways from that car wash, and have barely ever done work or needed to be there to sustain it. I know there are thousands of other ideas out there. Got any in mind? Also a self serve gas station.Self-storage facility people store their own stuff in your space, you never have to be there, and you make moneySelf-storage facility people store their own stuff in your space, you never have to be there, and you make money more

Voting Question: Verizon has the worst customer service!!!?

This is not necessarily a question, just a comment regarding Verizon and their business practices, and I am posting here since every time i try to access their message/blog boards it comes up with "sorry the URL you are trying to reach can not be found" My husband and I have been Verizon wireless customers for over 5 years, I have been a verizon customer for nearly 10. Verizon's customer service never seemed to be that big of an issue - if we had a problem - the CSR would usually help up out - however in the last 3-4 years - their customer service has been declining expodentially! Firstly - when my husband I combined our plans into a family plan - we had so many problems - mainly that they were charging us for calls we should not have been charged for - calls to other verizon customers, and even calls to each other! took nearly 6 months to get that straightened out. Then when my husband upgraded his phone to one with a touch screen, the phone was horrible. you would have to press the right side of the screen to get a button on the left - even though it was calibrated correctly - so he turned the phone in for a replacement... same things were wrong with the replacement - when he asked for a completly new phone they told him he had to turn it in two more times for it to count as a defect in the product itself - so he did - running 30 minutes trips to turn the phones in. BTW - they still sell these phones with Verizon - i guess known product defects do not warrant a phone being taken off the market. Anyway - we upgraded our phones again when our plan re-newed - big mistake. My husband got another touch screen, no problems with the screen this time - except it would continually access the internet while in the case. No help from verizon on this issue - except of course - you can buy the internet data package for $29.99 a month to keep from getting those charges! - no way turn the access to the internet off of our phones please - ok sure not a problem. except the problem continued. I called again when i got my next bill and saw that there were data charges for phones that weren't even suppose to have data access ability - "oh, well the internet can be turned off of your phone, but not your husbands" but you told me it was turned off last month" I', sorry ma'am, it wasn't" this is absurb. So we take a trip down to the verizon store to complain - the man behind the desk could care less. We really don't want internet access on our phones - i tell him "well, 90% of our 3 million customers want coverage." ok so i'm screwed because I'm in the 10% that doesn't? "No comment from behind the counter" after a long pause he says at the end of this year all but a few phone will be this way - almost all will have access to the internet that can not be turned off and the internet plan will be manditory - like it is on the smart phones now (blackberry's ect.) - so you are going to make the $30 a month charge manditory on all customers the end of this year? "YES" I'm done - close my account. " well there is $100 deactivation fee for early termination." - that's fine you guys owe me nearly $300 because you charged my account twice electronically in one month. Take it out of what you owe me! We have been with At&T for a few months now and our bill is exactly the same every month! Thank you for letting me vent guys. Please post your Verizon horror stories as well! more

Resolved Question: Dont you think this article is wonderful and says it all?

Here is an article that I found on line that tells you if you should trust online articles or not. ARTICLE: When it comes to the internet, you know that there’s a lot of misleading, inaccurate or downright false information out there. By now, most of you have heard the advice, “Don’t trust everything you read.” But how can you tell what to trust and what not to? Here are some questions that you should get into the habit of asking whilst you’re reading anything (not just online): whether it’s a blog post, newspaper article, sales letter or brochure. What’s the Author’s Purpose? The most important question to ask, and one you should have in mind when you start to read, is “What’s the author’s purpose?” All writing has a purpose. It might be to: Entertain you – make you laugh Give you information Sell you something Encourage you to come back to a blog or magazine in future Build up the author’s reputation in his/her field Some purposes are inherently more trustworthy than others. For example, if the author is trying to give you information, or build her reputation, then the facts in the article are likely to be ones that the author at least believes are true. But if the author is trying to sell something, then read with caution. Who Is the Author? Even if the author’s purpose seems laudable, you’ll want to ask yourself who the author actually is. Have you ever heard of him? If so, is he an authority in his industry or field – or is he a suspected charlatan? For example, imagine an article entitled “How to Become a Lifecoach”. You should trust this if it was written by Tim Brownson, a qualified and practising lifecoach, who has an entertaining and informative blog. But if I had written the article, you definitely should take what I’ve written with a grain of salt. I’m a writer, not a coach, and I’ve never so much as read the “Dummy’s Guide to Lifecoaching”. Of course, as a professional writer, I sometimes do write on topics I don’t know much about. When I do this, I need to undertake a lot of research. So if you’re reading an article by an unknown writer, it’s especially important to ask the next couple of questions. Are Sources Cited? Does the author give you facts – especially statistics – without any evidence to back them up? In an entertaining piece, this might be fine (it doesn’t matter too much whether the numbers are right, so long as the article is funny). But if you’re reading an informative piece about the economy, and the author says, “Ten million people will be out of work by Christmas” – does she link to a particular source that backs this up? And just because you’ve heard a fact before doesn’t mean you should take it at face value. Have you ever read about the Harvard Goal Setting study? It’s an oft-cited example of why you should set written goals, which is usually referenced as first appearing in the book What They Don’t Teach You in the Harvard Business School, by Mark McCormack. This is how it goes (taken from Harvard Business School Story): In that year [1979], the students were asked, "Have you set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?" Only three percent of the graduates had written goals and plans; 13 percent had goals, but they were not in writing; and a whopping 84 percent had no specific goals at all. Ten years later, the members of the class were interviewed again, and the findings, while somewhat predictable, were nonetheless astonishing. The 13 percent of the class who had goals were earning, on average, twice as much as the 84 percent who had no goals at all. And what about the three percent who had clear, written goals? They were earning, on average, ten times as much as the other 97 percent put together. But a couple of weeks ago, I read Fact or Fiction? The Truth About The Harvard Written Goal Study on SidSavara.com. It was an eye-opener. Sid looked for the original study online, and found no evidence that the study ever existed, despite it being cited in numerous books and all over the web. There’s a very similar story about a Yale study in 1953 – which again, can’t be backed up. So just because a book is cited, don’t assume that the information in the book is necessarily accurate. Are Examples Included? Does the author write very abstract, high-level information, without any concrete details? The article might still be true but it’s not likely to be very useful to you. The most trustworthy articles won’t just include general principles or woolly statements, but will give examples too. And the best examples include specific figures or facts, or quotes from people who aren’t the author and who don’t have a vested interest. What do you trust more, “You could make loads as an online copywriter” or an article including several stories from different copywriters who are making over $50,000 a year? Does the Article Contradict Your Prior Knowledge? Finally, ask yourself whether the fFinally, ask yourself whether the facts in an article go against what you already know. If you read a sales letter for a new diet pill that claims you can “lose 20 lbs in a month”, you’ve got good reasons to be sceptical. Most people on a diet lose 1-2 lbs per week, and most diet pills are known to be notoriously ineffective and even dangerous (one, Acomplia, has recently been banned in the UK and was never approved for use in the US, due to its association with psychiatric problems). Any statements which seem “too good to be true” also fall into this category. You may not have prior knowledge of the exact area that the article is about, but you do know that most people don’t “make $$$ working from home” (or they’d all be doing it!) How do you figure out what to trust and what to ignore when you’re reading online – or when you’re reading books and newspapers? Which of the above tips do you think would help you most – or which would you like to add to the list? more

Resolved Question: Should we "Go Cheney" on climate change?

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/09/opinion/09friedman.html?em=&pagewanted=print December 9, 2009 OP-ED COLUMNIST Going Cheney on Climate By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN In 2006, Ron Suskind published “The One Percent Doctrine,” a book about the U.S. war on terrorists after 9/11. The title was drawn from an assessment by then-Vice President Dick Cheney, who, in the face of concerns that a Pakistani scientist was offering nuclear-weapons expertise to Al Qaeda, reportedly declared: “If there’s a 1% chance that Pakistani scientists are helping Al Qaeda build or develop a nuclear weapon, we have to treat it as a certainty in terms of our response.” Cheney contended that the U.S. had to confront a very new type of threat: a “low-probability, high-impact event.” Soon after Suskind’s book came out, the legal scholar Cass Sunstein, who then was at the University of Chicago, pointed out that Mr. Cheney seemed to be endorsing the same “precautionary principle” that also animated environmentalists. Sunstein wrote in his blog: “According to the Precautionary Principle, it is appropriate to respond aggressively to low-probability, high-impact events — such as climate change. Indeed, another vice president — Al Gore — can be understood to be arguing for a precautionary principle for climate change (though he believes that the chance of disaster is well over 1 percent).” Of course, Mr. Cheney would never accept that analogy. Indeed, many of the same people who defend Mr. Cheney’s One Percent Doctrine on nukes tell us not to worry at all about catastrophic global warming, where the odds are, in fact, a lot higher than 1 percent, if we stick to business as usual. That is unfortunate, because Cheney’s instinct is precisely the right framework with which to think about the climate issue — and this whole “climategate” controversy as well. “Climategate” was triggered on Nov. 17 when an unidentified person hacked into the e-mails and data files of the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit, one of the leading climate science centers in the world — and then posted them on the Internet. In a few instances, they revealed some leading climatologists seemingly massaging data to show more global warming and excluding contradictory research. Frankly, I found it very disappointing to read a leading climate scientist writing that he used a “trick” to “hide” a putative decline in temperatures or was keeping contradictory research from getting a proper hearing. Yes, the climate-denier community, funded by big oil, has published all sorts of bogus science for years — and the world never made a fuss. That, though, is no excuse for serious climatologists not adhering to the highest scientific standards at all times. That said, be serious: The evidence that our planet, since the Industrial Revolution, has been on a broad warming trend outside the normal variation patterns — with periodic micro-cooling phases — has been documented by a variety of independent research centers. As this paper just reported: “Despite recent fluctuations in global temperature year to year, which fueled claims of global cooling, a sustained global warming trend shows no signs of ending, according to new analysis by the World Meteorological Organization made public on Tuesday. The decade of the 2000s is very likely the warmest decade in the modern record.” This is not complicated. We know that our planet is enveloped in a blanket of greenhouse gases that keep the Earth at a comfortable temperature. As we pump more carbon-dioxide and other greenhouse gases into that blanket from cars, buildings, agriculture, forests and industry, more heat gets trapped. What we don’t know, because the climate system is so complex, is what other factors might over time compensate for that man-driven warming, or how rapidly temperatures might rise, melt more ice and raise sea levels. It’s all a game of odds. We’ve never been here before. We just know two things: one, the CO2 we put into the atmosphere stays there for many years, so it is “irreversible” in real-time (barring some feat of geo-engineering); and two, that CO2 buildup has the potential to unleash “catastrophic” warming. When I see a problem that has even a 1 percent probability of occurring and is “irreversible” and potentially “catastrophic,” I buy insurance. That is what taking climate change seriously is all about. If we prepare for climate change by building a clean-power economy, but climate change turns out to be a hoax, what would be the result? Well, during a transition period, we would have higher energy prices. But gradually we would be driving battery-powered electric cars and powering more and more of our homes and factories with wind, solar, nuclear and second-generation biofuels. We would be much less dependent on oil dictators who have drawn a bull’s-eye on our backs; our trade deficit would improve; the dollar would strengthen; and the air we breathe would be cleaner. more

Resolved Question: Why do Google and some Americans confuse "free speech" with what is obvious racism?

in ref to: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-google-obama25-2009nov25,0,98932.story This is not a simple matter of where do we draw the line on censorship. This is a matter of the distortion of rights. It's INTENTION that reveals racism, and racism is a form of violence. The news article says an image (manipulated to make the face of Michelle Obama look like a monkey) was posted on a blog called "Hot Girls" (may have been removed), but currently the website linked to the gross image is a forum that's ridiculously over-the-top anti-government. The thread that was supposed to have contained the image reads like it was written by a Timothy McVeigh, or maybe the person you'd see at a G8 summit riot. Big quotes from civil rights leaders and news of their assasinations, lots of talk about "globalist pigs" and the government using "psychotechnology," mind control programs, social engineering, etc. The moderators of the forum apparently removed the image because it's no longer there, but Google thinks it's appropriate to leave it up on image search, apparently in the name of freedom of speech. About Google blogs from the news article: "Rubin [Google spokesperson] said Blogger users have to adhere to the site's terms of service, including a ban on hate speech, which the agreement defines as "content that promotes hate or violence towards groups based on race, ethnicity, religion, disability, gender, age, veteran status or sexual orientation/gender identity. ...a determination of hate speech, under company terms, would heavily rely on whether a site was 'attacking or advocating attacks on a person.' 'An image alone may not provide enough context to constitute a violation of the policies,' he added. A different website containing the same altered image of Obama was banned by Google several days ago, but only because the site was deemed to contain malware that could spread a virus or similar online malady. When a site is dropped from Google's index, the search engine will not present it as a result." --The spreading of a computer virus is intentionally inflicting harm, and this is the same intention with the manipulation of an African-American's face into that of a monkey. It would be sheer ignorance to not know in American culture that this image is intended to do harm. Google is allowing people to spread harm through the Internet, in support of people who don't understand what racism is. This is not simply about "freedom." It's freedom without responsibility. Even Yahoo Answers realizes you can't just let all people say whatever they want without there being consequences for what is obviously intended to be harmful! Why do some Americans believe that the "right" of free speech gives them the "right" to engage in a form of violence and racism and cause obvious harm? Do they just think there's no such thing as racism?Dan: Racism is not making fun of the "Hill Billie." Do you understand what racism is? It's a form of violence against African Americans. It's not INTENDED to be funny, it is intended to inflict harm.FleetTech: You're suggesting racism shouldn't be disturbing in a culture that so values freedom? Absolutely wrong. Racism is just as wrong as any inflicted harm. more

Resolved Question: How has the Internet broadened your horizons? Has it ever changed your mindset & opened your mind?

Do you express your view on a debate on an internet forum in a way that you'd never dare to in real life? Beijing, Oct 3 (Xinhua) Website business manger Shao Yibei describes herself as 'a tiny waterdrop in the ocean of Chinese netizens longing to shine'. But she never knew she would shine overnight. The 26-year-old music lover had a five-minute video clip uploaded on the Internet in February, in which she was singing while playing guitar a self-composed song about an urban single woman's attitude towards marriage.'My friend uploaded the clip just for fun,' said Shao, 'But none of us expected what would happen the next day'. The response from the virtual world was overwhelming, with more than 300,000 hits during the first couple of days. Shao also received thousands of 'friend requests' on her blog. Movie producers invited Shao to compose songs even when her first album is getting readied. 'I feel difficult to communicate with others in real life, so music is my way of expression,' said Shao, 'But it's the Internet that makes me 'heard'.'Shao is now best known as folk singer and blogger 'Shao Xiaomao'. Zhang Jie, a 26-year-old editor in the southwestern municipality of Chongqing, has found surfing indispensable in her daily life since she first had access to Internet 10 years ago.'The Internet does not only bring convenience to my life, but more importantly, it reforms my mindset,' said Zhang. Resolved Question: How do I go about creating a forum or blog that will draw attention?

Circumstances have it such that I am down here in a tiny Sonoran Desert town in southern Arizona, over a hundred miles from Phoenix or Tucson, and I am looking for some constructive way to use some of my time and abilities. I would like to create a forum where I can dialog with people who are looking for hope. Hope has saved me in desperate times and I am convinced that whoever offers the most hope, has the most authority, so I'd like to be about that business, if I can set up some kind of internet forum that can generate questions/ correspondence. I fumble terribly with all the features online, so that's why I am writing to Answers. Could use some good suggestions and guidance on creating a means to stay busy while at the same time, be of service and find a degree of fulfillment. I appreciate your help. more

Resolved Question: Can you sue a person for public humiliation because of something they put in their internet blog?

My friend's sister-in-law has been spreading horrible rumors about her through a blog on the internet. She has called her names and spoken of her personal business on this website! None of it is true so we were considering suing for libel but didn't know if public humiliation would also be worth trying to do. Normally we would just drop the matter and move on but the woman has gone so far as to bring my friend's newborn baby into the picture and post pictures of him on her blog! Enough is enough!!! more

Resolved Question: What do you think of the new W. House policy that attempts to claim anyone who disagrees with Obama is lying?

Not only are they posting what one can only describe as amateur hour propaganda, but they are asking private citizens to forward any dissent about healthcare straight to the white house so they can better produce propaganda in the future. What do you think of this?? Watch both videos here: http://hotair.com/archives/2009/08/04/white-house-obamacare-opponents-lying-by-using-obamas-own-words/ Douglass seems to have taken to her role as a propagandist rather well for someone who worked as a supposedly objective reporter for so long. How difficult is it to look through the first 64 seconds of the video Douglass attempts to rebut to find what Obama really had to say about single payer in 2003, while Obama prepared to run for the US Senate? http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/Facts-Are-Stubborn-Things/ There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. The 3-minute White House video features Linda Douglass, a former network television correspondent and now White House Office of Health Reform communications director, sitting in front of a computer screen showing the Drudge Report Web site. That site carries a series of video clips from another blogger who strings together selected Obama statements on health care to make it appear he wants to eliminate the private health insurance business. In the video Douglass says the site is "taking sentences and phrases out of context, and they're cobbling them together to leave a very false impression."bulwinkle......."He was covering actual lies. Resolved Question: Making some money from blogging?

I've been reading up on blogging a little, but I do not have a great understanding about how internet business and advertising goes. I've read that if you have a good blog, or even a great one and you begin to get a lot of hits and a loyal following, that you could even be approached by big companies wanting to advertise on your site. Let's say I created a blog that was super interesting and just knew it would be a big hit with anyone who read it and it got tons of hits, how would anyone know that my website was a hit or that it was popular? Would it have to be listed at the top of search engines, or could someone do some newspaper or some other type of advertising to promote their blog? I just hear about all of these stories, like the creators of Ebay, MySpace and all of the others. How did they get noticed? more

Resolved Question: Are there any legitimate at home businesses that are accredited by the Better Business Bureau?

I'm a single mom of three and has been searching the internet for any at home business opportunities I can do in my spare time. I do participate in those online surveys but that seems to be a dead end. I want something that's not a scam and will not take what money I don't have. I do verify everything through the better business bureau. I'm not interested in posting a web link or blog because I don't have my own business nor do I intend on having my own business. I was more interested in posting links, data entry, etc. for other companies. So if anyone has had any luck with some of those online business opportunities please feel free to share. Resolved Question: Reasons and specific examples of why the FCC should regulate the internet?

I'm not asking for your opinion. I'm writing a paper about how there should be some sort of regulation on the internet. I am discussing possible options that are not in violation of the First Amendment. I just need more reasons and examples why the internet should be regulated. So far I have: -Internet makes it easy to spread false information - can cause damages to businesses or reuptations of people -EXAMPLE: Bogus blog reported Steve Jobs had a heart attack -Innapropriate content is very accessible -Pornography and children -All other media outlets have regulation -TV- ratings and censored content - movies- ratings -Online threats and hate speech -EXAMPLE: American Coalition of Life Activists blacklisting doctors who perform abortions. -Listed their addresses, enabling others to attack them -One doctor was even murdered Any others? Thanks a bunch! more

Resolved Question: Internet Marketers or Anyone - I have a question for you about going from web 1.0 to web 2.0?

Hello, my question is this. I have a popular website that I've been running since 2000. It's a static web 1.0 site that sells access to a membership. I was considering the idea of adding some ideas like: a blog, a wiki, a classified ad section, and most importantly a social networking module to the site. Trying to decide if this is worth doing? Perhaps the biggest problem is what if paid members start sharing their passwords to login on those new channels? So on the one hand it might hurt business. But on the other hand I could start to develop a great deal of user generated content to grow the site and it's following. So the question I'm sort of facing is should I leave the site static and the way it is in as a web 1.0 site or add these elements to bring it more to a web 2.0 stage? more

Resolved Question: Looking for good examples of personal websites and blogs...?

I am redoing my personal website and I'd like to see some good examples of personal websites and blogs to get some inspiration from. Id like to see sites that are truely personal websites... not some attempt to make money or a blog that is all about business. I want to see blogs with some emotion. So, please feel free to share your own site if you have one... even if you dont think it is the best, I may still be able to draw some inspiration from it. Here is my site with the new design: http://prospector86.info I am also looking for ideas and suggestions on the design and layout. Remember, I am working on it at the moment, so some things might be a little off. Also, If you use Internet explorer, beware... Im not a fan. Thanks for your time, Sam more

Voting Question: If I decide to sell my jewelry over the internet, will paypal include tax?

Hey there. I figured since I've pretty much sold all of my jewelry that's going to be sold in my mini-town, I've decided to take it to the internet. I will hopefully sell through my blog. I have a paypal account, so I just have a few questions.... 1. If I sell something with paypal, (Just put up a 'buy me' button next to the item) Will it include tax? I don't want to get the federal government at my house. (Do I have to include tax? I'm only 16.) Can they arrest me for that??? 2. The way I'm thinking, People will make a comment on my blog if they want to buy something, leaving their email. They post what they want. Then they click the 'buy me' button, and then they email me their mailing address, which then I will send them the earrings in a nice gift box or something that I make and then Mail it first class. (Maybe they can pay for more to get it quicker?) I make these earrings by hand, each one is unique and never the same. http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s189/ZeldaFreak50/JewelryImageIII.jpg How much would you sell a pair for? I charge $4 a pair when I sell them at a coffee shop on consignment. 3. I think I have my Mom on board with this idea, but how should I get my Dad into this? Any suggestions would be great. He thinks that internet business is not good. T____T Thank you sooo much for helping me out with my business! And as always, God Bless. Lastly, if you have a link for a better way to go about this, that would be great too. Thank you so much again! ^-------^ more

Resolved Question: how do writers organize in formation in the article? what purpose do you think they had in mind with this stru?

Monday 9:30 a.m. It's time for a frank talk. And no, it can't wait. We know, we know: Most of you are sick to death of blogs. Don't even want to hear about these millions of online journals that link together into a vast network. And yes, there's plenty out there not to like. Self-obsession, politics of hate, and the same hunger for fame that has people lining up to trade punches on The Jerry Springer Show. Name just about anything that's sick in our society today, and it's on parade in the blogs. On lots of them, even the writing stinks. Go ahead and bellyache about blogs. But you cannot afford to close your eyes to them, because they're simply the most explosive outbreak in the information world since the Internet itself. And they're going to shake up just about every business—including yours. It doesn't matter whether you're shipping paper clips, pork bellies, or videos of Britney in a bikini, blogs are a phenomenon that you cannot ignore, postpone, or delegate. Given the changes barreling down upon us, blogs are not a business elective. They're a prerequisite. (And yes, that goes for us, too.) There's a little problem, though. Many of you don't visit blogs—or haven't since blogs became a sensation in last year's Presidential race. According to a Pew Research Center Survey, only 27% Some newer numbers: According to Forrester, 11.2% of online adults in the U.S. publish a blog at least once a month. Of the same group, 24.8% read a blog and 13.7% comment on a blog at least once a month. The numbers are higher for youths. Of online youths, 20.8% publish a blog, 36.6% read a blog, and 26.4% comment on a blog at least once a month. But I suspect the numbers are unreliable because many mainstream sites with millions of readers—celebrity site TMZ and gadget sites like Gizmodo—are actually blogs. But are all the readers aware of this? I doubt it. This is the blurring of the blog/mainstream divide, a theme we'll see again and again in these revisions. of Internet users in America now bother to read them. So we're going to take you into the world of blogs by delivering this story—call it Blogs 101 for businesses—in the style of a blog. We're even sprinkling it with links. These are underlined words that, when clicked, carry readers of this story's online version to another Web page. This all may make for a strange experience, but it's the closest we can come to reaching out from the page, grabbing you by the collar, and shaking you into action. First, a few numbers. There are some 9 million blogs out there, Yes, there were 9 million, but how many of them were active? Probably only a fraction. In early 2008, says Technorati Chairman David Sifry, the search company indexes 112 million blogs, with 120,000 new ones popping up each day. But only 11% of these blogs, he says, have posted within the past two months. That means the active universe is closer to 13 million blogs. Kevin Burton, CEO of FeedBlog, argues that the number should be lower, from 2 million to 4 million blogs. with 40,000 new ones popping up each day. Some discuss poetry, others constitutional law. And, yes, many are plain silly. "Mommy tells me it may rain today. Oh Yucky Dee Doo," reads only one April Posting. Let's assume that 99.9% are equally off point. What we didn't see in early 2005 was the advent of the spam blog. These blogs, produced automatically, are designed to show up in search results and to attract Google advertisements known as Adsense. Sifry estimates that fully 99% of the blog posts reaching search engines are spam. So what? That leaves some 40 new ones every day that could be talking about your business, engaging your employees, or leaking those merger discussions you thought were hush-hush. more

Resolved Question: Does Anyone Want To Advertise on My TV Network?

I run an internet based television service, True Black Television. It is primarily targeted towards the African-American audience. The network is run on a low, low budget. I have big dreams for the network including being on all major cable and satellite systems. I also want a news program along with many scripted shows. But, I cannot afford any of this, so I run many African-American shows in syndication. The channel is available on MySpace, YouTube, Metacafe, and Dailymotion. The network reaches 200,000 since being launched on June 29, 2008. Aside from that, my blog is #3 on the Google Rankings with 20,000 views since August 18, 2008. For all of these plans, it takes a lot of money. The only way that I can make this money is through ad revenue. I have pitched to numerous businesses, only to be turned down, or cheated. I need advertisers, but I do not know how to place banners on my videos or my blog. Also, I do not want to use AdSense. But, what I do is add advertisers to my blogrolls and place links to the sites in my video's description boxes. But, I have turned up pretty much empty. So, anyone who is interested, please help me. I have a feeling that my network will end up being just another unused idea.I am also using my blog for space, but no one is working with me. more

Resolved Question: What is your opinion on free contents in Internet? ?

What is your opinion on free contents in Internet? As you can see in my blog, I share as much as I can. The entertainment business thinks that it’s hurting their revenues, which I don’t think it is. I think that the content is free, beauty is free and you have to share, despite of your human condition. This is a very important moment to discuss that because they are threatening to pass laws for forbidding people to share their contents. I like to hear your opinion on this. Thank you!
